Today we're on
episode 360.
So we are coming back fullcircle on the topic of
cholesterol.
Oh I see what you did there.
Did you like what I did there?
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Yeah, geometry man.
I see what you did there.
Did you like what I did there?
Yeah, geometry man, I totallysee what you did there.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Oh yeah, that was
clever, wasn't it?
Speaker 1 (03:09):
And the question I
want to ask Jared today is why
is it so hard to lowercholesterol?
Because we have so many clientsthat come to us and they've had
such difficulty.
The truth is we now know it'snot hard to lower cholesterol.
You just have to know somethings.
That are misconceptions.
But, jared, why would you saymost people think it's so hard,
it feels really difficult tolower cholesterol.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
I think the key
element there, though, is why
does it seem hard to lowercholesterol?
Because, really, when you knowhow, it's not as difficult as
you've been led to believe, butI think the biggest element
there, initially, is our mindset.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
So, if you think
about it, when you go to your
doctor and you find out you havehigh cholesterol, do they talk
to you about how you're going tobe able to lower it, how you're
not going to have this for life?
Are those the terms that yougenerally hear?
Speaker 2 (03:57):
I don't know that.
I've ever heard that in mytraining or dealing with any
other medical provider ever.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
And were you taught
to teach that to your patients
in medical school?
Speaker 2 (04:07):
They taught us diet
and exercise and when that fails
now they didn't say those words, but that's kind of if you're
reading between the lines whatthey were saying.
When that fails, here's amedication for you.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
And so we go into the
doctor's offices.
What we hear a lot of times iswell, it's genetic and it's your
age and it just happens.
And so here let's start you onthis medication to help you to
get the level lowered.
Problem is, most of us knowthat the side effects of those
medications are going to makeour lives miserable.
We've seen people that havedealt with it in our families
(04:39):
that have been crippled by themedications and just had all
these different side effectsthat just make taking them
miserable.
So no one wants to take them.
Meanwhile, your cholesterolkeeps creeping up and you don't
know what to do about it.
You almost feel like medicationis your only choice.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Well, you're taught
that is the only choice.
And the other problem I havewith cholesterol is we're taught
that it's pathologic, that itis a problem.
Cholesterol is very necessary.
It's in every cell of our body.
We must have it.
The problem is the form inwhich we have it in our bodies.
But we're taught it'spathologic, it's genetic.
You must control it and reallythe only way to do that is a
(05:16):
medication.
But as you say, anita, it isvery, very common for people to
have side effects, and sometimesit can be mild, but many times
it can be very crippling.
And then you're left with thisoh no, I've got to get it lower.
I can't take the medications.
What can I do?
I'm kind of stuck here.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
So what we need to do
is get to the root cause.
I mean, many times we're justlooking at symptoms.
Oh well, my cholesterol is high.
We're trained to do that, andso it's putting out symptoms,
putting out symptoms, puttingout symptoms.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Controlling a number.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yeah, and it's so
frustrating.
I mean, we went through thatfor years with our own health
situations that we were goingthrough when we entered the
mainstream medical system.
But then we worked in it andthat's what we were told to
offer our patients the ways tomanage their symptoms.
Well, we got tired of helpingpeople manage their symptoms.
We didn't go into it.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
We got tired of
managing our own symptoms,
helping people manage theirsymptoms.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
We didn't go into it.
We got tired of managing ourown symptoms.
We didn't go into medicine andnursing to help people manage
symptoms.
We want to help people feelbetter, to prevent and even
reverse those symptoms.
So the question is is there away to do that?
When it comes to cholesterol, when you're trained, it's just
genetic, surely it's justgenetic, right Wrong.
So then we have to ask what isthe root cause?
What is the source of it?
(06:26):
Where is it coming from?
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Our body makes it,
but it makes what it needs, so
the majority of excesscholesterol comes from our food.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
So then the question
is which foods contain
cholesterol?
Is it in every food?
Speaker 2 (06:40):
No, it is not in
every food.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
actually, it is only
found even beloved dairy cheese,
yogurt, sour cream all thestuff I used to love eating on
the regular.
So how do I survive now that Idon't eat any of those things?
Don't I miss it?
No, I don't, Because I found mynew favorites, my new favorite
(07:02):
ingredients, my new favoritemeals.
I don't miss any of thosethings.
I still eat cheesy, creamythings, Alfredo sauce and creamy
soups and things that I lovethat are still cheesy and taste
great.
And I found my sour creamreplacement and my mayo
replacement.
When you do that, you setyourself up for the biggest wins
because you're living the waythat you actually enjoy.
(07:24):
You're still having thosethings you love.
You're just having them in theupgraded way that makes your
body feel great.
It loves your body back.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Now I have a question
Does organic or quote unquote
clean help with this problem?
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Oh no, because we did
that for years.
We were eating clean andorganic whenever we were at our
sickest, but we just didn't know.
No one was telling us thatthese foods were filled with
cholesterol and other thingsthat were harming our bodies,
making us feel bad, keeping usstuck and unable to live the
full, active life that we werelonging to live.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
We ate free range
eggs, no hormone added milk or
cheese.
We had beef from pasture raisedcows, so stuff that we thought
was the best of the best.
We still had those problems.
It wasn't making a dent in oursymptoms.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
And one of the
problems was that, even though
they're pasture-raised andcage-free and organic, they
still contain cholesterol.
Why?
Speaker 2 (08:17):
is that Because these
are animal products and animals
have cholesterol in them.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
So the first reason
it seems hard to lower your
cholesterol is because you thinkit's genetic and you don't know
that these foods that you'reeating on the regular are filled
with cholesterol.
Know that these foods thatyou're eating on the regular are
filled with cholesterol.
So what happens if you now takeout or remove the foods from
your diet that have cholesterolin them, all these animal
products we've just mentioned?
What if you do that?
Well, you're going to crash andburn because you know what.
(08:44):
You don't have anything youenjoy anymore.
You haven't done part two ofthe one-two punch, which is
putting in foods that youabsolutely love that don't
contain any cholesterol.
Wait, there are foods thatcontain no cholesterol.
That's right.
There are whole plant foodsthat have absolutely no
cholesterol in them whatsoever, but what they do have and this
(09:05):
makes it doubly good is thatwhole plant foods are full of
fiber.
Fiber helps the cholesterol getout of your body.
So let's say now you're noteating any cholesterol from
animal products.
No, animal products are cominginto your life, and now you're
eating all these wonderfulreplacement foods that are made
with whole plant foods that youabsolutely love.
It tastes just as good orbetter than your old favorites,
(09:28):
but they have no cholesterol andon top of that, they are full
of fiber, which helps thecholesterol that is already in
your body get transported out ofyour body safely and
effectively.
So now, how do you think that'sgoing to affect your
cholesterol levels?
Well, we see time and againthose numbers start to drop.
So the huge thing isremembering it's not just about
(09:49):
what you're not eating, it'salso about what you are eating,
what you put back into its place.
Just always remember one thingout, one thing back in its place
that you absolutely love.
That's going to promote yourhealth.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
I thought of a good
analogy.
But it's not a car.
What if you had a bathtub thatwas stopped up and you leave the
faucet on Now, not going fastbut just coming in at a moderate
pace?
That tub is going to overflow.
But if you stop eating thecholesterol, turn the water off,
you open the drain, you'reeating the fiber, the tub is
(10:23):
going to empty, the cholesterolis going to flush from your
system.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
That's a great
analogy.
Now let's think about this.
But, jared, do you think thatprotein fear leads to increased
cholesterol intake?
We were talking about this theother day, and I think it's a
very interesting thing toconsider, because there's such
protein fear in our society.
Am I going to get my protein?
Am I getting enough protein?
Would you like a protein withthat?
They even ask you that in therestaurant.
(10:49):
I want you to start noticing, when you go out to eat, how
often you're asked would youlike to add a protein?
It's really twisted.
It really is a marketing ploy.
It's okay, we need protein, right, but the thing is we have
a protein surplus in our society.
People are not, as a generalrule, unless they're starving
lacking protein.
What we are lacking is fiber.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
What they really
should be asking is would you
like a side of fiber with that?
Would you like to add somefiber to that?
I think the protein fear thatwe have is absolutely leading to
an issue with cholesterol, because we think animal-based
foods are the only source ofprotein that is out there.
I must need more and moreprotein, and the only way I'm
going to do that is by eatingfour eggs in the morning with a
slab of steak.
For lunch, I eat another slabof meat, and that you're getting
(11:38):
more and more, and then it'sonly natural.
What else is going to come withthat?
You're going to get saturatedfats, you're going to get
cholesterol and all those thingsthat we talk about on our
podcast here.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
Look, and if you're
like I was, you're eating your
baked potato or something that'swhole food, plant-based, right
but then you're putting all theanimal products on top of it the
bacon, the cheese, the sourcream, the butter.
You have to stop and realizethat this is what got me into
this situation in the firstplace, and no one was telling me
.
Why are my healthcare providersnot telling me this?
Speaker 2 (12:09):
And, ironically,
you're told to stop eating the
baked potato, thinking thepotato is the issue, when the
potato was not the issue, it waseverything else going on there.
Because now, like you said, wewill use a yogurt.
It's an almond milk basedyogurt with no sweetener, no
fruit, and it's an Excellent, excellent replacement for the
sour cream, because it tastesjust like it.
(12:29):
So we now have that tangygoodness on our baked potato and
we don't miss it.
That is our new favorite.
That is our upgrade.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
And on our burrito
and on our.
Mexican casseroles and on ourlasagnas.
There's so many ways you canuse these things when you know
the ingredients to use.
That's why it's just soimportant that you get inside

change your life.

So if you start eating thesefoods that have no cholesterol

things you want to do, becauseyou finally feel good.
(14:16):
So what can you do about this?
We've been talking about this alittle bit all along, but what
can you actually do to startlowering your cholesterol?
Step number one understand it'snot just genetic.
Cholesterol levels that are toohigh are largely related to
animal product intake.
Not all food, not just hey,it's the food you eat and you
(14:39):
need to change what you eat.
No, you need to know what thefoods are to get out and which
foods to get back into theirplace and that sounds great and
all because now you realize thatanimal products are the things
that need to come out and wholeplant foods are the foods that
need to come into your life on aregular basis.
