La colmena de abejas mielera es un super-organismo. Para garantizar la supervivencia de la especie, Apis mellifera divide su colonia en respuesta al ambiente y la cantidad de recursos que estos insectos encuentran. Un enjambre es una reproducción de la colonia. En el enjambre se encuentra la reina madre y un grupo de obreras (alrededor de 50% de la colonia). El la colmena parental se quedan obreras, crias y una o mas celdas de reina listas para emerger. Debido a estresores ambientales como plagas y recursos, aparte de la genética africanizada, la supervivencia de una colmena enjambrada no es garantizada y es recomendable que el apicultor divida y maneje el comportamiento de enjambrazón.
Hoy discutiremos como dividir la colmena artificialmente, y como podemos garantizar que tanto la colonia parental como el nucleo (split) sobrevivan.
