加州教育部計劃推行公立幼稚園和小學的新健康教育課程，教導學童拒絕刻板性別觀念，新的健康教育課程推薦閲讀的繪本包括《我的公主小男孩》（My Princess Boy）和《兒童認識多元性別導讀》（Who Are You?: The Kid’s Guide to Gender Identity），且父母必須讓小孩上此課程，不得拒絕。
《我的公主小男孩》是以一名擁有跨性別小孩的媽媽口吻，講述自己4歲的小男孩喜歡穿女生的裙子及閃閃發亮的東西，作家呼籲讀者喜歡這位公主男孩原本的樣子。在推薦序上，指這本書籍適合各年齡層，可用於證明性別差異和包容性。
第二本書《兒童認識多元性別導讀》（Who Are You?: The Kid’s Guide to Gender Identity）介紹人可分為15種性別，包括男、女、又男又女、非男非女、跨性別、性別酷兒、非二元性別、性別流動、性別中立、無性別、雙性人、第三性別、雙靈等，洋洋灑灑令人眼花撩亂。
但是，這兩本書本身就充滿爭議。《 我的公主小男孩》當初出版時，曾被家長抗議不應放置於公共圖書館兒童區，因為年幼的孩子在沒有大人陪伴下閱讀此書，容易被混淆，導致對其性向判斷錯誤。《兒童認識多元性別導讀》是寫給5至8歲兒童的繪本，介紹了大量超乎這年齡層能理解的性別意識形態，這只會混淆兒童的性別觀念。一旦新課程獲通過，家長卻無權為孩子選擇不上課，這是侵犯了家長教育子女的自由權利。
