Neste episódio do Prosa Agro com convidados, tivemos o prazer de receber José Bolivar de Melo Neto, diretor do Grupo Japungu, para discutir os desafios que as usinas sucroenergéticas enfrentam para aumentar sua eficiência e produtividade. Em especial, abordamos como elevar a produtividade agrícola da cana-de-açúcar, uma cultura que apresentou baixo incremento de rendimento nos últimos anos, se comparado aos ganhos obtidos com grãos. Uma das estratégias que o Grupo Japungu utiliza há mais de 20 anos é a irrigação, que tem sido um exemplo de sucesso no aumento da produtividade. Existem várias modalidades de irrigação, cada uma com custos e impactos diferentes sobre a cana-de-açúcar, dependendo da realidade de cada região. Por outro lado, há desafios na implementação, pois os produtores enfrentam obstáculos como custos elevados, necessidade de infraestrutura adequada, capacitação técnica e acesso a recursos hídricos.
Além disso, conversamos sobre as mudanças no setor de etanol. O aumento da produção de etanol de milho, que agora chega à região Nordeste, está alterando o fluxo doméstico do biocombustível. O Grupo Japungu, sediado na Paraíba, sente diretamente o efeito dessa mudança. Adicionalmente, as negociações entre os governos brasileiro e americano podem incluir a taxa de importação de etanol pelo Brasil, o que impactaria ainda mais a região Nordeste.
