Ethan (00:00):
Raising joyful children in an angry world, a podcast
dedicated to faithful parentsnavigating their families
through a stormy culture

Paul (2) (00:07):
The day comes when your son or your daughter is the
one who started that fight atschool.
Got caught copying some answersoff another student's test, or
maybe they just deceived you inthe home by blatantly disobeying
your instructions.
And you can't believe, how couldyour child do such a thing?

(00:29):
You might react perhaps in angeror begin to determine the
consequences.
Yes, children need to learn thatdecisions have consequences.
And so you come up with ameasured consequence, as you
should, as we discussed inDiscipline for Behavior.
But then what?
This is Raising Joyful Childrenin an Angry World.
I'm your host, Paul Osborne.

(00:51):
I want to say that soundtheology helps us understand how
to deal with our kids when theysin, and they will sin.
It is what we believe about Godand the gospel that instructs us
on what to do now in terms ofrestoring them in the faith.
There are two things that Ithink parents must recognize

(01:14):
from the creeds that aresummaries of the scripture that
is missing in a lot ofpostmodern Evangelical churches,
the word is propitiation that Iwant to touch on and then the
Holy Spirit that we'll concludewith before we go into the next
part.
But the first is that Christ isthe propitiation for our sin,

(01:38):
big word, but it is often beingreplaced in translations with
expiation.
Or atonement, and it can causeus to have a misguided
discipline because we don'tunderstand what's actually
happened at the crucifixion.
The creed tells us he wascrucified, died and was buried.

(02:00):
He descended into hell on thethird day he rose again from the
dead.
We know and we believe whathappened, but what does it mean
to us, to our kids and to ourfamily?
J.
I.
Packard and every one of thereformational leaders explains

(02:20):
what it means.
And we'll confirm that in thescripture.
So when the creed says Jesus wascrucified died and was buried,
descended into hell and roseagain on the third day.
If you believe merely that Jesusdid this solely.
So that your sins are forgiven, you're really missing the full

(02:43):
gospel and the nature of God.
J.
I.
Packard explains this in hisbook, Knowing God, that our sin
puts us under God's wrath andpunishment.
Yes, we need forgiveness, butGod's wrath also needs to be
satisfied.
And this big word, propitiation,it means to satisfy the wrath of

(03:08):
God and be forgiven.
Sins are covered and wrath issatisfied.
That is what propitiation means.
So first John says in chaptertwo, verse two, he is the
propitiation for our sin Romansthree 25.
He is presented as ourpropitiation wrath.

(03:31):
I think most of us understandthrough the forgiveness of sins,
but wrath being satisfied meanswe are in God's favor.
So when our child deceases, whenthey act on their own wisdom in
place of God's wisdom, it isimportant that the sin that they
did is taught to them that it'soffensive to God.

(03:54):
It harms the family, but thatit's also displeasing to God.
Because we did not trust whatGod told us.
But unlike the unbelievingsinner, those outside the
kingdom who are not in God'sfavor, not in the way we are,
they may have common grace, butnot in the way we are in the

(04:14):
kingdom.
But because we, because youtrust Jesus for forgiveness of
sins and the satisfaction of ofGod's wrath, the very thing that
displeased him.
You are not just forgiven.
You are forgiven and you are inGod's favor.

(04:34):
And the way you understand thisin my view is critical.
If you're going to have anunderstanding of unconditional
love, the observance of Monday,Thursday, good Friday, Easter
Sunday, it really helps us graspthe incredible price.
That Christ paid, but we don'twant to make this like this

(04:58):
current discussion aroundstudent loan forgiveness.
Oh, you made a bad decision.
Everybody does.
You were young and dumb and it'sokay.
And so we're going to forgivethe loan.
We need our debt forgiven.
But like someone that has inneed of their loan forgiven,
that doesn't put them back in afavorable spot with lenders.

(05:22):
And like the borrower, we needthe debt forgiven and we must
have our standing in the favorof God.
And that is what the death ofChrist as well as the
resurrection does for us.
Go back all the way to thebeginning.
There's the tree of life.
Trust God.

(05:43):
There's the tree of knowledge ofgood and evil, in which
humanity, through the lie of thedevil, falls for it and wants to
trust itself.
Become your own God.
Faith alone in God, trusting, iswhat Abraham did, right?
We're going back to the earlytimes.
He trusted the promise of Godthat he would make him a father

(06:05):
of many nations.
And so when Abraham and Sarahtrusted in themselves, the
consequence came, Ishmael.
But they were still in God'sfavor.
God did not make a conditionalcovenant.
He gave an unconditional love.
He did not go back to callingAbraham Abram.
He was still Abraham.

(06:28):
Humanity, Adam and Eve, chose totrust itself and the root of all
of our kids sinful acts startsand ends in this same thing of
trusting themselves, wanting tobe in charge, because they have
inherited this from our parentsin the garden.

(06:50):
Trust the word of God or trustanother word, not from God.
And this bent comes out into ourkids and into our lives in a
hundred different ways throughour sin nature.
I want to say if you desire yourfamily to truly live under the
freedom of the gospel in peaceand joy, a place where failures

(07:10):
are restored, virtue is grasped.
forgiveness is obtained.
True Sabbath rest from thiscrazy world that you live in is
going to be found.
Grasping what actually happenedon that cross and what it means
for your family is crucial.
We have to start that realizingthat what God commands of us We

(07:35):
fail.
Therefore, we have to trust whatGod has done.
Luther tells us, let the verbsof the Bible explain who God is
by what he does and explains howour kids come to receive and
trust what God has said.
When you discount the penalty ofsin and you only see it as sins

(07:58):
being forgiven and you don'tgrasp the wrath of God being
satisfied.
And as I said, that meansstaying in or being in the favor
of God.
You will miss part of what hasbeen done for us and what you
believe then has become sort ofa subtle way of connecting.
yourself or your children towhat you do.

(08:22):
You miss part of the word ofGod, the favor of God, because
you're not seeing that the wrathwas satisfied.
And that you were put back inhis favor.
The Ark of the Covenant was bothan atonement for sin and the
favor of God.
When we miss this fuller meaningof the cross and the gospel, you

(08:44):
tend to fall in one of twocamps.
Camp one, you believe thatyou've been given a mulligan.
That's what we call a secondshot in golf.
to second chance.
And now by your efforts, youmust contribute to your
salvation.
Prove it.
You must donate by your ownmerits and good works for the

(09:04):
satisfaction of your sin debt toget back into favor with God.
You will hope that in yourcontending for what is right,
you're going to tip the scale offavor towards you.
And if not, well, maybe somework of the church or someone
else can help you out.
You believe you can do somethingto gain God's favor.

(09:26):
That's the old, I made a dealwith God.
And in this, you will never havereal assurance.
The second camp is, you believethat, Oh, now by my knowledge of
forgiveness, I see the debt waspaid.
And then you slowly lean on yournew found wisdom that you have

(09:46):
chosen the tree of life.
Your great decision makinghelped save you and you blend
your trust in God and your ownwisdom.
You lean a bit on the tree ofknowledge, of good and evil,
that is the knowledge that it'sup to you, and it's left so many

(10:08):
people spending years wrestlingwith if you really meant it,
truly decided.
Or worst, you see it as, well,it was a one time decision.
I signed up for it.
I made the pledge.
And you put it in a drawer untilyou die, because that's when you
need it.
This camp overemphasizesdecision making and under

(10:32):
emphasizes trusting the call ofthe Holy Spirit, the third part
of the Creed.
Both of these camps will leaveyou and your children in a bit
of an anxious faith because ourbeing made holy is starting to
become on us rather than seeingit has all been done.

(10:56):
By God, the creed and our Bibleis telling us that when we get
the full deal of what happenedon that cross and confess then
that we believe in the HolySpirit, because we need our
hearts opened, our eyesunblinded, our ears unplugged to
actually hear the word of God,the call of God, that we trust

(11:23):
the action of God and we seethat our new redeemed eyes and
our comprehensive value of God'sgift of grace.
And we just simply trust it.
It's not some kind of choosingthe right door, the right stock,
the right career.
It's simply trusting andreceiving the promise that's

(11:45):
delivered to you.
Remember Daniel.
About the dreams of the king, and he answers, no wise man,
enchanter, or diviner canexplain the mystery, but there
is a God in heaven who revealsmysteries.
Any faith That takes forgivenessand skips wrath has not seen the

(12:09):
full mystery and it leaves ustrying in some way to trust in
some mix of grace and ourselvesand allows part of what we are
trusting in to be human wisdom.
I know this is hard, but tryingto lean on two trees at one
time.
It's more hard.

(12:29):
It's more difficult.
The Holy Trinity works together.
The Father Almighty, we said, made us.
Jesus, the only begotten, savedme.
And the Holy Spirit gives thewill and the power in trusting
in what God has done for me,anything else is going to leave
me in an anxious camp of partialreliance.

(12:53):
You hear it all the time.
Say something like, if my peoplewho are called by my name will
turn from their wicked ways toooften, we start turning these
verses in.
If I do this, God will do that.
We're back to deal making.
John tells us that we have theright that those that receive
this promise have the right tobecome the children of God and

(13:15):
such we are.
Peter tells us you are a royalpriesthood.
It's all because of what God hasdone and because what God has
done God says who we are..
I trust what he has done and itdefines me.
Martin Luther in his catechismprobably explains it very

(13:37):
blatantly.
He says regarding this issue ofthe Holy Spirit, I cannot by my
own reason or strength believein Jesus my Lord or come to him,
but the Holy Spirit has calledme by the gospel, enlightened me
with his gifts the way heenlightens and calls and gathers

(14:01):
his church.
The 39 Articles of Faith of theEnglish Reformation of the
Anglican Church.
We cannot, in our own strength, turn to the calling of God.
In the 11th, we are accountedrighteous solely on the merit
and righteousness of Christ.

(14:23):
How we grasp the Holy Spirit.
Is the crux of the reformationand the gospel and the width and
the depth of our Christianworldview and what it means to
put our faith in God's promises.
Believe the gifts are mine as Irest in what he has done.
And then I serve God inappreciation.

(14:45):
So how do we teach this to ourkids in these fleshy, sinful
moments?
Yes, there are consequences forsin.
Appropriate discipline helps uslearn.
The results from bad decisions, really decisions of trusting in
ourselves rather than trustingGod, but there has to be

(15:05):
forgiveness of our sins it is anabsolution that both satisfies
God's wrath and our debt.
We, because of what we believe.
are in God's favor because Godsays you are forgiven and God
says you are a royal priesthoodand because God says you are

(15:26):
favored.
We, as parents, simply have toask our kids to confess their
sin to God, explain what the sincaused to us in the family and
how it conflicts with what Godsays.
And as the child confesses andrepents, we remind them.
If we say we have no sin, wedeceive ourselves and the truth

(15:48):
is not in us.
But if we confess, God isfaithful and just to forgive us
and purify us from allunrighteousness.
We don't just get our sinsforgiven.
We are purified from it becauseof what Jesus did.
We are in favor with God and hispromise cleanses us.

(16:09):
And that promise remains.
We have to rebuild trustsometimes with those that we've
hurt, but with God we are.
When our kids fail are theopportunities to teach this.
and to teach them the gospel andsolidify their identity in the
kingdom.

(16:30):
The joyful family, the joyfulChristian family, will see
themselves and understandthemselves as being forgiven and
favored by God by trusting inthe promise that the work of God
has done and that work alone.

(16:51):
The ultimate battle for theheart and soul is a fight for
identity.
Our king invites our kids toknow who they are, what to
believe, and where they belong.
Until next time, let's rememberthe words for theirs is the
