Ethan (00:00):
Raising joyful children in an angry world, a podcast
dedicated to faithful parentsnavigating their families
through a stormy culture.

Paul (2) (00:07):
The Foo Fighters came out with a song in 2023 called
The Glass, and I want to give alittle snippet of it, which is
all I can really give, but Iwould encourage you to go look
at the lyrics of this song.
It's Bob Dylan.
It's Paul Simon like into what Ithink is an insight and

(00:28):
understanding where a lot ofyoung people are.
Kind of keep in mind, all thevirtual reality games, the
Google glasses, the new headsetfrom Apple is all being released
or was already released at thistime.
And it opens up, I had a visionof you and just like that, I was

(00:50):
left to live without it.
I found a version of love andjust like that, I was left to
live without it.
And then there's a bunch ofthese types of lyrics and it
concludes.
Waiting for the storm to pass, waiting on this side of the
glass.
I thought this song reallyreflected a lot of where a lot

(01:14):
of young people are getting allof this sort of unreal false
realities being presented tothem in a thousand different
ways.
And then finding themselves kindof in a storm with not much to
hold on to.
I don't know if this was theintention of the Foo Fighters,
but it is quite a descriptivesong in many respects of our

(01:37):
current situation.
And when you tag this song, asyou look at this article that
came out over last weekend inthe Sunday times, the article is
written by Alice Thompson'scalled bad therapy.
And she references an author, Ithink includes an author,

(01:58):
Abigail Shrier.
Who is an American who wrote abook called why kids are not
growing up.
I love the moniker.
Maybe it's her Twitter name, thetruth fairy.
And read the article states that40 percent of children in the
United States have seen atherapist and the majority of

(02:18):
American schools are using dailyonline surveys to assess the
well being of pupils.
The assessment, according to Ms.
Thompson, is that American youthare more unhappy than British
teenagers.
But that really wasn't thepoint.
The article's trying to saythat, yes, there's a place for
good therapy.

(02:38):
It can be life saving.
People go through traumas.
People have mental healthissues.
But some normal kids As, as Ms.
Schreier points out, with normalproblems are being fed into a
mental health care she callspipeline, and she claims we are
creating patients faster thanthe pipeline can cure them.

(03:02):
One of their nieces suggestedthat we've been gas lit into a
thinking therapy will answer allof our problems.
And so the issue at hand, whenyou kind of distill all this
down and you think about thissong that we just talked about
is that the kids are livingwithout having built resilience.

(03:24):
The issue at hand.
Was the failure of the kids andyoung people to have anyone
building resilience into theirlives.
Resilience is baked into ourfaith.
And as we look at the laststanza of this creed, I hope we
see that the byproduct of faithand understanding our faith is

(03:47):
resilience.
It's one of the byproducts forour kids as they try to
navigate.
So many of the things in theartificial world that they're
walking through now, I want tobe honest.
I just got my CBD catalog.
That's Christian book dealers, not that other stuff.
And you might conclude thatChristianity has joined the

(04:09):
therapeutic bandwagon that thetruth fairy was warning us
about.
The beginning of the catalog, there was all these books and
many of the new books werewarning us of these apocalyptic
boogeymen.
And some of them even attach theblame that these boogeymen and
evil people were causing.

(04:30):
That was the fault of the peopleof the church.
And then the second wave ofbooks were offering the therapy
of the world with basically someBible verses.
That's how I want to say whenthe experts outside our faith
are beginning to see that theirsolutions are failing kids, a

(04:51):
repackaged version, Christianversion of it, of the same
medicine is not what we need.
Faith of our fathers offers usthe creed.
Based on the word of God andresilience is what I hope will
be one of the byproducts thatyou see.
And when you see it, you'll seethe significance of why teaching

(05:11):
this to your kids is soimportant.
The church has the greatestcollection of teachers
historically, in my view, theworld has ever known.
And it is the teaching that hastaught kids for 2000 years how
to grow up and how to beresilient.
We're not going to find thiswisdom in most of the modern

(05:34):
influencers or Joe Rogan or allthis other stuff.
We're going to find itsummarized in our historic
faith, the creed.
And this last partition says, Ibelieve in the Holy spirit, the
Holy Catholic church, the HolyChristian church, Catholic being
universal, the communion ofsaints, the forgiveness of sins.

(05:58):
And the resurrection of the bodyand the life everlasting.
There's a lot in this and wecould spend time on each one.
But we talked about last week, Igot to believe in the Holy
Spirit that the Holy Spirit isbringing me the gospel and the
word and opening the eyes of myheart to understand it.
Not going to do it on my ownpower and wisdom.

(06:19):
And then once the Holy Spirithas done that, once I've trusted
him as that part of the HolyTrinity, Then I begin to see, I
believe in this church thatJesus spoke about, this church
that is everywhere in the worldthat he said the gates of hell
would not prevail against.
Suddenly I'm part of somethingthat will prevail, that will not

(06:41):
be defeated.
It has been around for 2000years and continues despite its
failures and its shortcomings.
It continues to persevere andprevail.
And then the, and then the creedgoes on to say.
And the communion of saints, Iam now part of this historic,
all of the people that aresaints from the past, all of the

(07:01):
people that are saints now, andI'm also part of a local
community of saints that are inmy church.
This is where I like to tie thatverse in how great is the love
the father has lavished on usthat we should be called the
children of God.
And that is what we are.
And once you understand that youare part of that community of

(07:22):
that church because of belief inthe Holy Spirit, that Jesus
saved you, that the Fathercreated you, and then you get to
this part, the reason the worlddoes not know us is that it did
not know Him.
Man, there's a first block ofresilience.
I'm part of something.
I belong to something.
My identity is attached tosomething and it is not

(07:44):
dependent on the worldunderstanding it or knowing it.
That is a huge inoculation tohave as a young person.
Then we go on to the forgivenessof sins.
I believe in a church that'sgoing to prevail.
I'm part of a local communityand the forgiveness of sins.
And if you remember that notonly are my sins forgiven.

(08:06):
But my, my favor with God, thatGod that wants to bless me, the
abundant God who made me hasbeen restored because his wrath
has been satisfied.
And because of this, I don'thave to live in regret.
I'm not defined by my failure.
I'm not labeled by what theworld wants to label me because
I'm redeemed and I'm in favor ofa God who loves me and is the

(08:30):
God who made me and has made theentire universe.
Oh, then I believe in theresurrection of the body.
You're going to find as kidsgrow older, this obsession with
the body and the things we findabout our body that aren't great
and the things that are great.
But when we understand that ourbodies are going to be
resurrected.
Not even death can stop me.

(08:52):
No disease, no dysfunction, nothing that's on my body isn't
going to be restored and broughtto the perfect body that God
will give me on my resurrection.
And then it says the lifeeverlasting, that my story, my
life, my part in this communityis going to last forever.

(09:12):
It's never going to end.
That because of what God hasdone for me, I now live forever.
For the average young person whois facing the basic issues of
life.
Relationship problems, littlefinancial struggles, difficulty
at school, trying to determine aprofession or a calling, all the

(09:35):
normal stuff that everybody hasto go through.
Kids that try to do this withoutspiritual direction become these
wandering souls that get pulledinto the anger merchants.
The enemy comes in, he pullsthem into these despairs and
they tend to either fall intothe rebellion against the world

(09:58):
or attach themselves to somelabeled destructive lie.
But the kids that have faithhave a way of navigating and
seeing the gifts, and this iswhat we are trying to teach and
offer, and ask the Holy Spiritto put in their hearts.
The child that has faith can seethat they have refuge in Psalm

(10:20):
91.
They can see they have wisdomthat is given in Psalm 1.
They can see that they are morethan a conqueror, that they're a
friend of God, that they belongto a kingdom.
that will never end.
And their story is part of thegreat story of the great God.

(10:40):
It's a story of redemption andit's a story of eternity.
When you have that and you'renavigating these institutions
that we see in our society thatat one time were, somewhat
effective at maintaining somelevel of civil order, and
they're still doing some ofthat, but we see more and more

(11:01):
chaos, more and more delusionbeing introduced by these
institutions and being injectedinto them, be it the courts, be
it the school system, be ithigher education, and, The
institutions of government, theinstitutions of the arts and
entertainment and our kids needa deep understanding of faith to

(11:23):
see what actually is true inorder to be courageous,
resilient, and joyful people.
Let me give you an example ofhow I think you can do this from
time to time.
So over the weekend, a couple ofmy grandkids are at my house for
dinner.
And my wife and I are like, Oh,what are you doing at school and

(11:46):
how things.
And so my granddaughter says,Oh, well, we've set a leprechaun
trap for St.
Patrick's day at school.
She doesn't even know what aleprechaun is.
So we get to talking aboutleprechauns and pots of gold,
and maybe they'll find someprizes of candy or trinket, but
we took the time to say, now, doyou know who St.

(12:07):
Patrick is?
Oh, what's a saint?
Well, that's what you are.
That's what I am.
When we believe in Jesus, we'reconsidered saints.
And St.
Patrick, well, he was fromEngland and he got kidnapped and
stuck in a prison in Ireland.
And then he escaped and he gotback to his homeland.

(12:28):
And while he was there, he gotsome training in the Bible.
And then his heart was like, fell in love and he wanted to
bring the gospel.
So he went back to evangelizethe island of Ireland.
And you know that shamrock?
Oh yeah, I know what a shamrockis.
That was actually a three leafclover.
Got one out of the yard.

(12:49):
St.
Patrick used this to teach theHoly Trinity when he was
evangelizing, sharing the Gospelof Jesus to the people in
Ireland.
And we looked at it, Father,Son, and Holy Spirit, just like
this clover.
It was a story.
of resilience and a story ofwhat is real and of what is

(13:10):
true.
You're going to find, whetherit's the Apple glasses, the
Google glasses, or the virtualreality, and all this sort of
stuff that gets flying around, most of it untrue.
We need to bring our kids backto an historic faith, with real
people who did real things.

(13:30):
In order for them to see whatthey are going to be called to
based on what they understandfrom their training.
When you do that, you're goingto be giving your kids a faith,
and that faith is going to givethem resilience, when you walk
your kids through the truths andthe teachings of the scripture,

(13:52):
When you remind them, yeah, there's an Easter Bunny, but
this is what Easter is about.
Yeah, there's a Santa Clausstories, but this is what
Christmas is.
Yes, there's a leprechaun in St.
Patrick's Day, but this is whatactually happened.
You're teaching them, you'rebringing them into what is real.
And when you bring people intowhat is real regarding the
Christian faith, they're goingto find the gifts of resilience

(14:16):
as part of their life.
The ultimate battle for theheart and soul is a fight for
identity.
Our king invites our kids toknow who they are, what to
believe, and where they belong.
Until next time, let's rememberthe words for theirs is the
Kingdom of Heaven.
