Procrastinar consiste en posponer deliberadamente tareas importantes pendientes, a pesar de tener la oportunidad de llevarlas a cabo (se tiene el tiempo y la ocasión). Puede afectar a acciones (p. ej terminar un trabajo pendiente), conductas (p. ej posponer el dejar de fumar o el hacer ejercicio) y/o a la toma de decisiones.
Los procrastinadores crónicos son conscientes de las consecuencias que comporta su tendencia a posponer: proyectos personales y profesionales estancados, recargos económicos, problemas de salud, oportunidades perdidas, excusas por inventar, disculpas por pedir… También tiene un elevado coste interno, que suele consistir en sentimientos de inadecuación, frustración, reacciones de ansiedad y baja autoestima. A pesar de conocer el precio a pagar, no logran ponerse “en marcha”.
