ATR2100x-USB Microphone (00:00):
Hello,
friends.
(00:00):
Welcome back to Real, brave,Unstoppable.
I'm glad to have you back forthis episode.
Number 126.
So I've been working with peopleon their mind and spirit.
Parts of themselves a lot overthe last many years, I've been
coaching.
Five.
Fears about.
(00:21):
But I've also recently realizedthat I'm really missing that
piece of things where I'mhelping people with the physical
aspect of their health as well.
I've always loved that.
I'm a certified personaltrainer.
I'm athletic.
I love to be active and workout.
And I also really love helpingpeople reach those sorts of
goals as well.
Or just.
You know, have fun with it.
(00:41):
And for some reason, combiningall of those things together.
I just was a long work inprogress and I think some
something finally clicked andthis just seemed like the time
to do that.
So today in the work I do, I'mfocusing on a holistic model for
creating your best life and myphilosophy. And how I work is
built off of a foundationalthree pillars.
(01:03):
So there's body, there's mindand their spirit.
And today in this episode, I'mgoing to talk about the spirit
pillar, because a lot of peopleask me questions about this.
Like, what is this.
So I'm going to expand a littlebit on what spirit means and why
it's a really important part ofwellness from a holistic
approach.
(01:25):
So a lot of times, When we thinkabout wellness, most of us focus
on the physical stuff.
Things like exercising, eating, right, getting enough sleep.
Some people focus on losingweight or building muscle,
things like that.
Others might think about mentalwellness, like managing stress
or practicing mindfulness, butthere is this third piece to the
(01:46):
puzzle and that is spirit.
So, what is that?
A lot of people think about itas like relating to God or a
higher power.
And yes, it can be that.
But it can mean different thingsto different people.
For me, for example, spiritmeans connecting to like the
greater collective.
(02:07):
To something bigger than myself, even if I'm not really sure what
that is.
It's about connecting with myinner knowing and really tapping
into that like infinite pot ofwisdom that exists somewhere
inside of me.
I can't always tap into that bythe way.
It's also knowing what'simportant to me and connecting
with those things to createmeaning and a sense of purpose
(02:30):
in my life.
I also like to think aboutspirit like this.
If I consider having two selves, one that's really run by that
thinking brain.
That has lots of thoughts.
We're in routine.
You know, there are those timeswhere we kind of feel like life
is almost robotic.
It's sort of like the part of usthat's like in the forest, we're
(02:51):
in the weeds just day to dayminutiae or, you know, bouncing
from thing to thing.
And the other part of us isreally like experiencing life
and seeing things from thisbroader perspective.
Sort of like the constant, likegrown-up, wise version of you
that can rise above the minutiato really see the bigger
(03:13):
picture.
Here's something that I think iskind of neat when I ask clients
this question, like when we'rethinking about these two selves,
when I asked them what theyperceive as the difference
between the two selves.
Most of the time people say, well, the sort of the spirit
part of, you know, the, the partthat we think of as spirit is
this sort of calm, wise voicethat really feels like truth.
(03:39):
And the thinking self is morelike frantic and busy.
Like, no, no, no, no, no.
Yeah, but this and yeah, butthat, and I got to do this and I
got to do that.
Um, and I really, really agreewith that.
That resonates with me so much.
It's kind of like, it's sort ofthat intuition.
when you really connect intothat intuitive self things, feel
like really true and wise andcalm.
(04:03):
So just think about that.
Overall though.
I think that Spirit's aboutcreating meaning, finding
purpose, and connecting tosomething bigger than ourselves.
So, what does that look likethough?
Again, I mentioned it can betotally different for, for
everyone.
Some things that come to mind.
That might resonate with youare, first of all, maybe
(04:25):
connecting with nature.
Or creative expression like artor music or acting, or, you
know, anything that's realcreative using that right side
of your brain.
Developing and connecting withyour intuition or your inner
wisdom.
Maybe it's like just sittingwith I do, I do a lot of times
exercises with clients where, especially if they're having a
(04:47):
hard time, not overthinkingdecisions, where they just pause
and sort of feel into it,.
Like try to access thatintuitive self or that inner
knowing.
And really here, we just kindof, we really literally like sit
and feel...
what's the first thing.
And this is actually also whereI get into to asking that
(05:09):
question about like, how arethese two selves different, but
like just feeling into it andsort of learning how to tap into
that.
More feeling intuitive part ofyourself.
Engaging in meaningful work orservice to others can be another
way.
Exploring spirituality, religion, or a higher power, if
that resonates.
(05:31):
And also cultivating gratitude.
Wonder, awe joy.
So the thing to remember is thispillar is very personal and
completely unique to eachindividual.
So how you connect to the twospirit is really different is
going to be different than yourfriend.
So you might start to thinkabout this a little bit.
(05:52):
Like how do I connect to thatpart of me?
So let's talk about how thispillar spirit fits into the big
picture of overall wellness.
Well, for me, it is really thepart that ties everything
together.
So.
I think it's what gives ourefforts with body and mind a
(06:13):
sense of purpose and directionbecause really, I mean, let's be
honest.
What's the point of building astrong body or developing a calm
mind if we don't really have adeeper why behind it all.
Spirit is really what helps usconnect with our, why.
It's the pillar that reallyfuels our motivation when we're
tired, or when we'reoverwhelmed.
(06:33):
It reminds us of what reallymatters.
Whether that's being present forour family or making an impact
in the world, or like maybe it'sjust even simply finding joy in
the really small everydaythings.
And here's the thing. (06:47):
Spirit is
also what we turn to when we
feel stuck.
This is why I love this pillarand why it is so important.
Have you ever had one of thosemoments where you feel like
you're just checking all theboxes, like, you know, you're
eating healthy or you're workingout, you're staying productive,
you're doing your job.
You're raising your kids.
Maybe you're going out withfriends and, you know, doing
(07:08):
some hobbies here and there, butstill you feel like something or
maybe a lot of things, aremissing.
Well, that's where the spiritpillar comes in.
Because it's the part of us thatreally craves meaning and
connection, and that sense ofpurpose.
I do a lot of work with myclients on discovering their
values and really then usingthose values to really make
(07:33):
choices in life and, you know, values are really, what's
ultimately important to you.
Your guiding principles in lifethat, you know, even if nobody
was watching you, you wouldstill care about them.
And you'd still want to show upin those ways.
They act like a compass toreally help keep you on the
right track toward living thelife you want.
Connecting with the things thatare important to us as what
(07:56):
brings us meaning and purpose inlife.
And it makes sense.
Like if we don't really carewhat we're engaging with, we're
going to feel really differentthan if we're engaging in things
that we really do care about.
So think about it this way, thebody is about what we do.
The mind is about how we think, and the spirit is about why we
(08:16):
do it.
And all three areinterconnected.
So when you nurture your spirit, you naturally feel more
energized to take care of yourbody.
And you're more grounded in yourthoughts.
Also.
When your body and your mind arestrong, it also becomes easier
to tap into your spirit.
So we need all three.
(08:38):
This becomes really importantwhen it comes to creating new
habits around the other twopillars because it's when we
connect our values on ourvision.
With our goals or desires thatreally transformation happens.
Think about when you dosomething you don't care about,
you're not nearly as motivatedto get it done.
Or stick to it.
(09:00):
For example.
Maybe you're someone who finds asense of purpose and like
helping other people.
So when you focus on that spiritpillar, maybe you volunteer,
support a cause you care about.
Or even, maybe it's just showingup as your best self in your
relationships.
You will likely notice how itgives you more energy to take
(09:22):
care of your physical health andlike clarity to manage your
mental wellbeing.
When you have thoughts thataren't helpful, you're able to
notice them and go, Ugh, that'sjust a thought.
Side note, one of my clientsthat was like a life-changing
phrase for her.
Life-changing.
Every time she noticed a thoughtthat was keeping her stuck.
She'd just pause and say, it'sjust a thought.
(09:45):
I loved it.
So great.
But when you're connecting withthings that are important to
you, it also really you feelwhen you're connecting with
things that are important toyou, you feel good about
yourself too.
And that really fills up likethat.
What I call aliveness tank.
When you really feel like you'reliving your life and it's not
just pulling you along.
(10:05):
You don't feel as depleted andyou feel more energized.
On the flip side, when weneglect this part of ourselves,
it can really leave us feelingdisconnected or like we're
running on autopilot.
I also like to call it runningon the hamster wheel of life.
We like, we might feel busy, butwe're unfulfilled.
(10:25):
Or we feel like we're goingthrough the motions without a
sense of meaning.
So, this is why caring for yourspirit as just as important as
eating well or managing stress.
It keeps you aligned with thebigger picture.
It keeps you feeling happy andenergized about life.
Like, I guess it really, for mecomes down to, it helps us, it
helps me feel alive.
(10:47):
And when I start to feel likeI'm going through the motions,
this is the stuff I take careof.
So in the context of holisticwellness, the spirit piece is
also it's I guess you couldthink of it as like it's the
piece that helps us live withintention.
So it's what allows us to feelwhole and balanced and
connected, not just toourselves, but to the world
(11:08):
around us.
So I want to expand a little bitmore on why it's so important to
take care of this pillar of youroverall wellness.
So let's start with this.
Like I mentioned, our spirit iswhat connects us to the bigger
picture of our lives.
This is the part that asks.
Why am I here?
What am I meant to do?
(11:30):
How can I find meaning in thisexperience?
So when we neglect this part ofourselves, like we, like I
mentioned, we can end up feelingstuck, burned out unfulfilled,
no matter how much we take careof our body and our mind.
So, if you think about it, thisway, you can exercise daily, you
can eat all the right foods, youcan practice mindfulness, but if
(11:50):
you feel disconnected from yoursense of purpose, You can feel
empty.
Have you ever felt like that?
I have totally.
The spirits, what helps usbridge that gap.
It's what keeps us movingforward with clarity, energy and
intention.
One of the reasons spirit is soessential is that also a really
fosters resilience.
(12:12):
So as you probably have noticed.
Life will always throwchallenges our way.
Always.
And just, I mean, my experienceis that just when you figure one
out.
You feel like, okay, cool.
I got my stuff.
I got that.
I got it through her, threw methe curve ball.
I solved that problem.
So I'm good.
(12:32):
Oh, no.
Oh, no people.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
You are not done.
I think everyone's different.
But from my experience, like, yeah, I thought, okay, this,
this is the worst time of mylife.
It's done.
I'm good.
From here.
no.
Nope.
This is not how it works.
So when we really connect tothis part of our wellness, or
(12:54):
when we connect to that part, that spirit part.
Whether it's our values, a senseof community, or even like just
the belief that our lives have, meaning.
Our pain has purpose.
It becomes a lot easier toweather those storms.
Uh, spirit really gives usgrounding and perspective.
We need to bounce back and movethrough the hard times.
(13:16):
Caring for our spirit also helpsus show up as the best version
of ourselves.
I have people all the time cometo coaching and say, I just want
to be the best version ofmyself.
And, It's a very broad goal.
But when we feel aligned withour purpose and our values, I
mentioned this earlier, butwe're naturally more energized.
(13:36):
We're more fulfilled.
And like we're just more presentfor the people around us.
We're not just surviving lifeand going through the motions,
we're actually thriving andliving it.
And that kind of energy, itreally ripples out into every
area of our lives, whether it'srelationships work, or even
health.
On the flip side, neglectingthat spirit can have some pretty
big consequences.
(13:57):
I mentioned autopilot.
It's really easy to fall intothat.
I fall into it too.
Like recently I have felt thatway.
And I know though, when I noticewhat that feels like, it's my
cue that, oh yeah.
That's, I'm neglecting in thispillar.
So, you know, you might feellike you're chasing goals or
meeting expectations, butwithout a deeper sense of
(14:18):
meaning, it just kinda feelslike draining and maybe you
might even feel unmotivated.
So, this is all why I believethat spirit is really just as
important as taking care of yourbody and your mind.
It's also why, if you thinkabout people who are really
unhappy with their body and youlook at them and you're like, oh
my God, why are you unhappy withyour body?
(14:39):
You're gorgeous.
They're not taking care of theirspirit.
We want to live lives that arefull of depth and color and
beauty.
And that's what helps us wake upin the morning with a sense of
purpose, even when life feelsoverwhelming and the really
beautiful thing friends is thatcaring for your spirit does not
have to be complicated.
It's about tuning into whatmatters most to you and really
(15:02):
making space for that in yourlife.
When you make time to nurtureyour spirit, you are giving
yourself the gift of connectionto yourself also to others.
And actually what's really cool.
Is that when you focus on whatmatters to you.
It makes it really easy toprioritize your to-do list.
It makes it really easy tosimplify your life.
(15:24):
And then also when you make timeto really nurture your spirit,
you're giving yourself the giftof connection.
Connection to yourself, toothers and to just the greater
meaning of life.
Of your life.
And honestly seriously thatthat's a gift.
It sounds cliche or cheesy, butthat's a gift that can really
(15:44):
carry you through the toughestmoments.
It doesn't mean you won't havetough moments.
It doesn't mean you will not bemessy or you won't fall apart.
But it does just being that ithelps carry you.
It helps you be resilient.
It's a really important if youhaven't figured it out by now, I
think it's a really importantpart.
So.
Now that we've talked about whatit is, what spirit is and how it
(16:07):
fits into the overall picture.
Look like let's talk about howto actually care for this part
of ourselves.
Like how do we do this?
And really the truth isnurturing your spirit.
Doesn't have to be complicated.
It does.
However, take intentionality.
First, I want you to think aboutwhat makes you feel alive?
What activities or experiencesmake you feel connected to
(16:27):
yourself, to others?
Or even something bigger thanyourself?
And these are often the thingsthat fuel your spirit.
For some people, it might bewalking in nature or sitting by
the ocean.
I love, I personally lovesitting in nature.
It's like, it just really, it isdefinitely a way for me to
nurture that part of me forothers, it could be creating
(16:48):
art.
Journaling practicing yoga,gardening.
Spending time on the water.
The key is really to identifywhat fills you up.
And then make time for it.
One way to care for your spiritis to explore your values.
So ask yourself, what's reallyimportant to me?
(17:08):
What do I stand for in life?
Who am I at my core, what'simportant to me?
When we align our actions withour values, that's where we get
purpose and fulfillment.
That's where we get a sense ofthose things.
For example of kindness is acore value for you.
You might find it reallyuplifting to volunteer.
Write notes of appreciation, dolike small acts of kindness for
(17:33):
others, things like that.
Uh, another way to care for yourspirit as connect sting with awe
and wonder.
So this could be simple stuff.
These are things that I lovetoo.
Watching a sunrise or a sunsetstargazing.
One of my favorite, I love tolook at the moon.
Like I just, I love the moon forsome reason.
I love looking at stars.
(17:53):
It really helps me connect withthat.
Especially because you considerlike how far away those things
are, and it just sort of hasthis sense of Like there's so
much out there.
It just is kind of cool.
Like we're such a small littlepart of the overall thing.
(18:17):
Maybe your thing is listening toreally beautiful music.
So these moments remind us ofbeauty and mystery of life, and
they can really help us feelkind of grounded even in tougher
times.
Practicing gratitude is alsoanother very powerful tool.
I just want to preface the restof what I'm going to say with
(18:37):
practicing gratitude does notmean that we're bypassing what
doesn't feel good.
What's hard.
What we're struggling with itdoes not mean that at all.
It just means reminding ourbrain that there are these other
things also that are pretty damngood.
Or even just kind of good.
Like, however you want to thinkabout it.
It's not bypassing pain andshitty things.
(18:58):
It's just saying, oh, Hey, likethis is shitty, but also this is
pretty, this isn't so shitty.
And.
That might be hard sometimes.
Depending on what is going on inyour life.
Trust me.
I have been there.
I have been there.
But when you start to look forthose things, it starts to make
a difference.
Promise you.
(19:20):
And it can be noticing.
The big things or small things, you know, it just shifts our
perspective and it helps us feelmore connected to what really
does matter.
So maybe try starting agratitude journal or simply just
taking a moment every day tojust reflect on what you're
thankful for.
Even if it's one thing like I'mdrinking this warm coffee and
(19:41):
it's really cold outside, I'mreally thankful I have this
warmth and coziness in my life.
For some, um, spirit.
My, like I mentioned earlier, itmight be connecting with a
higher power or spiritualitythat could mean prayer or
meditation attending church orreligious services or exploring
spiritual teachings.
(20:01):
But remember this does not haveto be tied to a specific
religion.
It's about whatever makes youfeel connected to something
beyond yourself.
Last consider spending time inmeaningful connection with other
people.
Whether that's deepconversations with the close
friend or joining a community ora group, or maybe it's working
(20:23):
on a shared cause.
These interactions can, they canreally help us feel seen and
supported and, That connectionis.
It can really help us feel likewe belong.
And like we are part ofsomething.
Bigger than ourselves.
I'm also a really big fan ofcreating space for reflection.
(20:45):
Life moves really fast.
And a lot of times we are justnot aware of what's going on in
our brain.
Or.
What we're doing in life.
That's where the autopilot comesfrom friends.
So sometimes we just need toslow down and reconnect with
ourselves.
And journaling is a great way todo this.
(21:06):
You can write about your dreams, your challenges, or even like
big questions in life.
Like what brings me joy?
What kind of impact do I want tohave on the world?
How did I feel today?
What am I feeling right now?
Or maybe you want to draw apicture or get out some paints
and paint in your journal, or,you know, like you can write one
(21:27):
word how I feel today.
Journaling can take many forms.
I did an episode on journaling.
Oh, back in 2020.
It's actually episode number 19.
So go check that out.
It talks about journaling andhow, you know, there are a lot
of different ways to journal.
So remember that caring for yourspirit is not about perfection
or adding another thing to yourto-do list.
(21:49):
No, it's about noticing whatmakes you feel most alive and
fulfilled, and then making thata priority in your life.
And like everything I talkabout, start small, even five
minutes of just beingintentional.
Being mindful or intentionallyreflecting...
Or connecting with yourself canhave a really big impact.
(22:10):
Remember when you nurture yourspirit, you're not just taking
care of yourself, you're fuelingthe energy and the purpose that
will ripple out into everythingyou do.
So I think one of we're going totalk right now, before we end
the episode, I just want to talka little about some of the
misconceptions about this pillarof wellness.
(22:31):
I think one of the biggestreasons people shy away from the
idea of spirit is because thereare so many misconceptions about
what it means.
For a lot of people, the wordspirit immediately brings to
mind, religion or faith in ahigher power.
Well it, well, that can be apart of it.
It's not the whole picture.
And that certainly is not theonly way to connect with your
spirit.
(22:51):
So if that's concerning yourattorney or turning you off, I
encourage you to just sort oflook within and let me just say
it loud and clear (22:58):
like you
don't have to believe in God or
follow a particular religion tonurture your spirit.
Spirit is deeply personal andit's not about subscribing to
someone else's beliefs orpractices.
It's about discovering whatreally brings you a sense of
meaning, purpose and connection.
For some that might involveprayer or meditation or
(23:19):
connecting with the higherpower, but for other people, it
might mean spending time innature or pursuing creative
passions or finding joy and justreally simple everyday moments.
Another misconception.
Is that caring for your spiritrequires a lot of time and
effort.
But the truth is it doesn't haveto be complicated or time
(23:41):
consuming.
Sometimes it's as simple astaking a few minutes to just
pause and reflect on what you'regrateful for or sitting quietly
and just taking a moment ofpeace, just enjoying that.
Small intentional acts can alsogo a long way and feeding your
spirit.
Using meditation as an example,People when they start to
(24:05):
meditate, a lot of times whathappens.
Is there, like, okay, I'm goingto meditate for 15 minutes every
day and I'm going to get intothat habit.
Well, that's not easy.
I mean, it's only 15 minutes,but.
You know, then we get intopeople have expectations about
meditation.
I'm not supposed to think whichis not true by the way.
(24:26):
You're of course going to thinkthat's what your brain does.
You can't just turn the switchoff in your brain.
So you're going to think thepractice of meditation is
learning to observe yourthoughts and not hook into them.
But people then get frustrated.
So it's, it's better to, youknow, if you're not familiar
with practices around yourspirit or you haven't really
done that, it's better to, tojust do a tiny bit and build on
(24:46):
that.
But.
I always say it's better to getconsistent with a tiny bit of
time.
And then build from there.
Otherwise you're not going to doit.
I've also heard that spiritfeels too abstract or vague or
woo.
It's hard to define andtherefore it's just hard to
address.
And I totally get that spirit isabstract in a lot of ways,
(25:09):
because it's unique to each ofus.
It's not something you canreally measure or put in a box,
right?
Like with our body, we.
W this is pretty, pretty cut anddry.
We want to work out.
We want to exercise.
We want to eat healthy foods.
We want to, you know, get moresleep.
With our mind, like, you know,it's like, what is our
self-talk?
What does, you know, what is ourmindset?
(25:30):
And the spirit it's like, woo.
It's a lot there, a lot ofdifferent ways we can tap into
that.
But this is also what makes itso, so powerful is it gives you
the freedom to define it on yourown terms.
Finally.
Last thing I want to address issome people feel like focusing
on their spirit is this luxury.
(25:52):
It's something to do afterthey've taken care of quote,
unquote more important thingslike their body or their mind.
Or even just other people, otherthings.
Got to put everyone else first.
Right?
But I would argue that spirit isjust as important if not more
so, because this is the piecethat holds it all together.
(26:12):
When you take the time to carefor your spirit, you're not
being indulgent or selfish.
You're actually fueling thisdeeper part of yourself that
allows you to show up fully inyour life.
It allows you to be there forother people.
It allows you to.
Take care of your body and yourmind.
So if the idea of spirit hasfelt intimidating or even
(26:35):
irrelevant to you in the past.
I encourage you to approach itwith curiosity.
One of my favorite words, instead of judgment.
Ask yourself.
Like, what would it look likefor me to care for my spirit in
a way that feels authentic towho I am.
There's no right or wrong answerhere.
All right.
We have covered a lot today.
(26:56):
We've explored what the spiritpillar is and why it's such a
crucial part of holisticwellness.
We've talked about how itconnects us to our purpose,
gives meaning to our lives andhelps us navigate those stuck
moments.
And we've also gone over somereally practical ways to care
for your spirit and we alsoaddressed the common
misconceptions that might beholding you back from
(27:16):
prioritizing this part ofyourself.
So as we wrap up.
I want to just leave you withthis thought.
Caring for your spirit.
Isn't about perfection and it'snot about adding one more thing
to your already full plate.
It's about reconnecting with theparts of life that light you up
and ground you.
(27:38):
It's about giving yourselfpermission to slow down and ask
those deeper questions to createmeaning and to find joy in the
present moment.
Your spirit is really a uniquepart and an essential part of
who you are.
And when you take the time tonurture it, you'll see how it
really does start to enhanceevery other area of your life.
(27:59):
Your body, your mind, even yourrelationships.
So here's my challenge for you:
this week. (28:02):
undefined
I want you to take five minutes, just five minutes.
And do something that feelsmeaningful or nourishing for
your spirit.
It could be journaling, walkingin nature, listening to a
favorite song, or simply pausingto breathe and reflect.
(28:24):
Whatever it is, let it besomething that connects you to
yourself or to the world aroundyou.
