Real Talk with Leigh Daugherty: Decluttering Your Home and Why it's Important For Your Mental Health

Wow, what a story! Leigh worked for three decades in the fashion design industry with some of the biggest-known brands of the nineties. Think Marc Jacobs before he was Marc Jacobs, the brand, and Calvin Klein when he was producing in Florence, Italy! She traveled the world many times over and was the director of 3 separate areas with 3 different production calendars. One day she looked at her calendar and saw she had 27 meetings - in one day. This level of stress and responsibility is not sustainable, so it was no surprise when her body responded with insomnia, migraines, inflammatory symptoms, and hard-core menopause. She began having cognitive challenges that caused her to lose her job due to performance issues. 

She had been ready to make a career change for a few years but was responsible for being her family's breadwinner, and those golden handcuffs were tight. However, this forced her to make some changes, and that she did. She divorced and purged her house of all the stuff they were not using to the point that "it looks like the Amish up in here," one friend said. That is when she found her true calling. "You can only dig deep when you get rid of the excess stuff and distractions." It's so much more than decluttering your home, it's about decluttering your life, but it starts in your home. After our conversation, I started looking around my home and was like, wow, she's right. I have so much shit I am not using and have not seen for years. She explains why we hold onto things and the emotional connections with our stuff. She wrote a book, I read it and immediately started clearing my home room by room.
