Have you noticed that old wounds and limiting beliefs showing up lately? You’re not alone. Many of us on the spiritual path are feeling an intense surfacing of our deepest shadows right now — and although it can feel unsettling, it’s actually a blessing in disguise.

In this episode, I invite you to see these resurfacing patterns for what they truly are: an invitation. We’re in a time of energetic shifts, solar flares, astrological alignments, and a spiritual “thinning of the veil” that is asking us to gently bring light to the parts of ourselves that have been hidden in our subconscious. These old stories and protective parts were never here to punish us — they were formed by a younger self who did the best they could to feel safe.

Through Soul Recovery, we don’t fight our shadow — we welcome it, witness it with compassion, and release it with love. Together, we’ll explore how to recognize these old beliefs when they show up, how to feel our feelings without becoming them, and how to step into our sovereign, whole self that’s always been there beneath the stories.

As you listen, may you be reminded: your shadow doesn’t define you. It’s simply showing you where more light wants to enter.

Welcome to the Recover your Soulpodcast a spiritual path to a
happy and healthy life.
My name is Rev Rachel Harrison.
I started Recover your Soulafter having profound changes in
my life from my recovery ofalcoholism, codependency and

(01:02):
control addiction.
I was guided to share the toolsand principles of spirituality
and soul recovery to help otherstransform their lives as mine
was transformed.
For us to overcome externalcircumstances, we need to turn
the attention to ourselves, focusing on our inner change and
healing.
Positive results in our liveswill follow.

(01:25):
Welcome to the Recover yourSoul podcast and community.
I'm Rev Rachel.
Thank you so much for choosingin today.
Thank you for trusting me onyour soul recovery journey.
This is where we're rememberingour wholeness.
We're learning how to be okay, beyond okay.
We're actually learning how tobe happy and healthy regardless

(01:47):
of what's happening around us,through a spiritual path, and I
continue just to deepen my ownspiritual journey and just be so
grateful for the transformationthat's happened in my own life,
because it's still lifey.
Out there there is still a lotof the exact same stuff that
used to shut me down and I feltoverwhelmed and I felt

(02:07):
uncontrollable and I was tryingto fix everything.
I was really suffering, suffering being that feeling of
trying to make it be somethingelse, that we didn't want it to
be what it was.
So then we were doingeverything we can to make it be
something else and in thatthere's just so much pain and
discontentment and frustrationand real grievance and

(02:30):
resentment.
And when we step into thisplace of soul recovery, we're
actually stepping into theknowing that we can learn from
these experiences, but we do nothave to be part of them.
We're taking our power back andsaying I am going to choose a
different way of being.
I am going to choose a new path.
Today is a new day and the waythat we do that really is by

(02:55):
really exploring ourself, ourthoughts, our beliefs.
I wanted to talk today in thisepisode a little bit about
what's coming up for you, thatthe beliefs and the patterns and
the stories that have been whatwe call the shadow and the
shadow work, that Carl Jung usedthis idea that there are these

(03:16):
elements of ourselves.
And I'm going to ask you ifthey're coming up really heavy
for you right now, because arehave been coming up for me
really, really intensely rightnow.
And when I tap into the otherspiritual teachers and
channelers and in the real worldthat's out there that I am just
fully immersed myself in andlove so much because it just

(03:39):
feels it feels so much morepeaceful there, it just feels
like there's more ability toattune to my higher power, to my
higher self, and the word outthere, the concepts out there,
are that right now there is alot going on in an energetic
level, really a lot going on anenergetic level and we can feel

(04:02):
it here on the plane of beinghuman beings, here at Earth
Squall.
There's a lot going on atenergetic level and we can feel
it here on the plane of beinghuman beings, here at Earth
School.
There's a lot of energy and itcomes all the way from, if you
look at astrology, the peoplewho are into astrology.
The astrology readings areshowing that this is an
incredibly intense time and thatis showing up to be rightfully
so, and also on the energeticlevel even even it's so amazing

(04:29):
the solar flares that arehappening.
That energy on a spiritual levelis on purpose because it's here
to awaken, to charge the energyaround us, to bring up these
pieces of ourselves that arebeing brought up, to be revealed
.
This is part of the soulrecovery process is to really

(04:50):
look at these aspects ofourselves that have these old,
tired, limiting beliefs and forthem to come up and be exposed.
Not for you to reinforce themor to believe in them even more
or say, see, this is why my lifeisn't working, this is what's
going on with me, but really foryou to look at them and see
them in a way where you see fromthis new soul recovery place

(05:15):
that you've been working on withme, where you can look at it as
a witness with gentleness, compassion and kindness, and say
compassion and kindness and say, wow, that is what's in there.
I'm letting a pain or a beliefsystem that came from parents
when I was a small child thatwas from their own ignorance is

(05:38):
the word that's coming to me ortheir own inability to be
present in that moment, or thepain and the wounds that they
had, that they were inprojecting and inflicting upon
me, that I put them into my mindas if those were real.
And now I'm seeing that they'renot real, that they're just
stories.
They're these old stories, these old beliefs of not being
enough, of doing things wrong orbeing responsible for everyone,

(06:02):
and they're coming up not foryou to double down on them.
They're coming up for you tosee them, witness them, love
them, accept them, havegratitude for them and to
release them and let them go.
As I record this, it is summersolstice, june 21st.

(06:24):
They say on a spiritual levelthat this is one of those times,
if you really look in theenergy, that there is this
thinness in the veil.
They call it that the abilityto step into this more awakened
state, is more available, thatthat space is more transparent,

(06:47):
and I am stepping more intobeing willing to talk openly and
I am doing more of that over onthe bonus recovery soul podcast
, which is going to be rebrandedto be called awaken your soul,
because you're here, becausethis is calling to you and the
guidance I continue to get isdon't be afraid to talk about it

(07:07):
, because I'm not telling youthat you have to go all the way
out into the woo.
Go into what is being called toyou.
You are here on your spiritualpath to discover yourself, to
remember who your soul came hereto be, without all this sludge.
Remember who your soul camehere to be, without all this
sludge, without all thisstickiness that comes from all

(07:28):
these old stories and oldbeliefs and old patterns.
You know, I was reading onsocial media the other day
somebody who is talking abouttheir childhood and they want to
help other people who may havehad these complicated childhoods
that they had, help otherpeople who may have had these
complicated childhoods that theyhad, and it was a long post

(07:50):
around a narcissistic parent.
And what I think is sointeresting is that there's a
couple ways that you watchpeople go through these
experiences and one of theawarenesses that I have is
there's no right way or wrongway.
It's not as if the soulrecovery path is the only path.
As a matter of fact, it is theexact same journey that so many

(08:12):
other spiritual teachers areteaching, because it is a path
of awakening.
I just have my own terminology,my own way of doing it, but
what I recognized in that wasthere was an identification that
she had as being wounded fromthis parent that she was holding
, and it didn't feel to me andagain, this is my interpretation

(08:34):
of how it felt to me it felt tome like she was holding onto it
, as if it's to say see, this iswhy I'm like this and this is
what this person did.
That wasn't okay and this isthe story, right.
So in soul recovery, what we'relearning is we're learning to

(08:55):
express and speak our story, because our stories are so
valuable, because they're goingto give you information about
what that shadow is.
What is that limiting belief?
What is that story that you'retelling yourself over and over
again, that's actuallyunderneath in your unconscious
and subconscious, that isactually keeping you from being

(09:17):
able to break through and moveinto a new way of being right.
This is step three isdiscovering unhealthy patterns,
beliefs and stories in soulrecovery.
Step five is releasing thepatterns that no longer serve
you so you can move to step six, which is embracing new beliefs
and rewrite your story.
But the old story is giving youinformation, so it's never

(09:38):
about dismissing the story.
It's about witnessing howdeeply you identify with it and
then you claim it, because whenyou claim it, you're actually
still holding on to the storyand the healing doesn't come
from going around and reallyfeeling victimized.

(10:04):
In the experiences that you hadas a child and we all had very
difficult situations the victimis a brain place that says this
terrible thing happened to meand I want you to know.
Some really difficult andpainful and traumatic things
happened to you.
Absolutely they did.

(10:24):
But when we come at it from aspiritual angle, from the soul
recovery perspective, we'reactually looking at it from this
place of curiosity andtenderness and compassion to a
younger self and how it felt tothem.
We are not a victim.
We are feeling beings and thefeelings are actually the power

(10:47):
of what our souls came here toexperience.
Feelings are incrediblypowerful.
They have so much to offer usand information and experience
and growth, feeling feelings andhaving the experience and then
how it feels in your body isreally the power of what your
soul came here to be.

(11:08):
So when you reach back intothose experiences, it's as if
you take those characters andyou stop identifying them as
being good or bad or whatever itis.
Generally, let's look at aparent right, like this parent
was a narcissistic parent.
They're playing a role, they'rehaving an experience and you're

(11:28):
holding space for them withoutany expectation or
identification.
And that's a big shiftsometimes to make because that's
how we're usually taught isthis is what parents do and this
is your mom and your dad andthis is how they're supposed to
be and this is how they screwedup or this is how they did
things right.
What we're doing is we're likelooking at these souls, like

(11:49):
look at as a soul cluster ofthese different souls that came
into how this, this lifetime, and to teach each other things
and to break patterns, and forsome souls it's to stay in their
karma.
They don't get to awaken thistime, but you are, you're
awakening, you're doing it soyou can look at these

(12:11):
experiences that you had as achild and you can take off these
labels and expectations and youcan be curious about what it
felt like to you, instead ofblaming and naming them as the
addictive, alcoholic father orthe narcissistic, unavailable

(12:34):
mother or the emotionallyunavailable brothers or sisters
or whatever it was.
Yes, that is a label that youcan give it.
Set that aside, step into yourshadow and be curious about how
it felt to you.
What did that feel like to you?

(12:55):
Because that's where the poweris.
That's where the healing is.
It's not about naming the other.
You're powerless.
That's step two in soulrecovery.
We're powerless over everythingoutside of ourself.
You are powerless over how theyshowed up.
You're powerless over whattheir ways of how they reacted
to you said to you, out of theirown intention or non-intention,

(13:20):
whatever it was, but it felt away to you.
And this is really where thehealing is, because when you can
touch in and you can begin toreally feel those feelings from
your younger selves, they willshow you the stories and the
beliefs that were set up.

Back to the episode, and youknow for me that one of my big
ones was around getting introuble from this one time right

(14:49):
.
It's so amazing how it doesn'ttake all that much For some
people.
They have these incrediblypainful repetitive situations.
Well, I had this one time ofgetting in really big trouble
when I was four years old, but Ialso had more times of not
getting in trouble and learninghow to be good.
Not getting in trouble andlearning how to be good.

(15:13):
I had more experience, not fromthe infliction of something,
but from the knowing.
To not get in trouble was how Istayed safe, and what did that
feel like to me?
And so when I go in and I touchthose places of what that felt
like to me, that's where I canbegin to uncover this deep place
that has a massive fear ofrejection, of not doing

(15:39):
something right.
And isn't it interesting that, whether you come from a family
with a lot of dysfunction orwhat some people are like no, no
, no, I grew up in like thisgreat family and everybody was
really there for each other.
We all set into roles that weplayed and this creates our
shadow.
This creates this part ofourself that has some sort of

(16:03):
limiting belief.
That is made from a child, it'smade from a younger self, and I
have an episode that's aroundour protectors and parts, and
this is part of that where yourecognize that those parts of us
that had these intense feelingsthat we didn't know how to feel
when we were younger, wecreated our soul creates a

(16:27):
protection to keep us safe.
So for me, my protection was tobe a really good little girl.
Right, be a people pleaser, bea codependent.
Make sure everybody else'sneeds are taken care of before
your needs.
Well, one of the things that'sreally coming up for me in this
massive energy shift that we'rehaving right now, which has been

(16:48):
going on for about a month.
So, if you've been having stuffcome up for you, I want you to
really just give yourself energyshift that we're having right
now, which has been going on forabout a month.
So if you've been having stuffcome up for you, I want you to
really just give yourself somegrace and I want you to give
yourself credit that you areattuned to the energy.
We are vibrational beings.
We are attuned to the energy.
If you've been tired, if you'vebeen feeling overwhelmed, if

(17:08):
you don't know why you have likeI just got to stop, I can't do
anything right now, or you'rehaving headaches or your body
feels different, it's becauseyou're actually feeling the
energy that is coming from allthese solar flares and from the
stars, and there's somethingreally beautiful in that.
That's because you areawakening and you're connecting

(17:32):
beyond what is in your body andyour mind.
You're actually opening up tosomething even greater still.
If you can see how beautifulthat is.
So one of the things that's beencoming up for me is the other
major wound that I had wasaround rejection from friends
and children and being an onlychild and having parents that

(17:56):
were these very independent.
You know, when I look at itfrom my adult self now I had
these, you know, amazing parentswho were very independent, had
me because a star spoke to themon a hillside and told them that
I was coming.
So if you go way into the wooright, my soul knew that I was
supposed to come through them.

(18:17):
They weren't the kind ofparents that just couldn't wait
to have a baby and they weregoing to have everything around
that baby.
That wasn't my experience, butI had these independent parents
and so I was.
I was alone a lot and I wasleft on my own to take care of
myself and to my own devices, and so when I tried to interact
with other kids I didn't reallyknow how to do that.

(18:41):
I didn't have any brothers orsisters.
I hardly even had parents thatreally like played with me or
interacted with me on that on akid level.
I was treated like an adult bythem from the very beginning, so
I didn't really know how tointeract with kids and there was
a lot of rejection, and so thatset up a system in me that
really has said that peoplearen't safe and that I have to

(19:02):
really care about what peoplethink about me.
And this has come up in thelast month so intensely, over
and over and over again from allthese different angles, all the
way from putting together thefirst draft of the manuscript
before I could hand it over toMaddie, who's my co-writer, and

(19:22):
let her do her magic and thenwe'll rework it together again.
When I was writing and I was inthe mix of first of all feeling
and remembering all the reallydifficult, painful stories of my
life that are part of that bookof my own soul recovery process

(19:43):
, that was really painful, butwhat was really painful was all
the limiting beliefs that werecoming up around who do you
think you are?
Who do you think you are to saythis or to have a story to tell
, or that you're not a goodwriter, or you don't know what
you're doing?
And it was.
It was crushing and it was likecan't even describe it.

(20:07):
It was in a way that I had asif everything was really coming
up in this way of like you'regoing to be.
Oh, I just felt like I wasgoing to die.
I just felt like I was going todie in my being and luckily
we're in this soul recoveryprocess together where I could

(20:28):
hold space for it.
It was like I could watch myselffrom above, with the fear of
rejection and the fear of notbeing enough and the fear of
everything that is really rootedin the shadow of unworthiness
that we all have, thisunworthiness that we all have.
And when you look at it fromthis beautiful space of imagine,

(20:54):
you're seeing yourself throughthe eyes of love, of spirit, of
Christ, of God, of source, ofyour angels, or whatever it is
that you call it.
And you are looking at yourselfthrough these beautiful eyes.
Do you see yourself as broken?
It's not enough, of course not.
What you see is you see thewholeness of who you are and you

(21:16):
recognize the experiences inwhich you've experienced and the
complexity that they were andhow.
So much information that wasbrought to you was brought to
you out of fear and out of oldhistorical patterns handed down
from generation to generation,of how we speak to each other,

(21:38):
how we talk to each other, whatlove looks like generations of
addiction, generations ofdysfunction, and you see a
purity within yourself and areminder that that's all just
story.
It's all just story.
We don't have to identify withthat story, right?

(21:58):
So that goes back to when welook at these stories and we can
see ourselves with this levelof compassion.
Then it goes back to the, ofcourse tool that was a couple
episodes ago as well.
Of course, this little girlcreated this story about who she

(22:19):
was and how she was supposed tobehave.
And of course, that moved oninto my life, going forward, and
how I've shown up and how I'vetried to get approval from
people and what I think I am andhow I've been afraid and and
how my codependency has worked.
And then you can just loveyourself so much, you can just

(22:39):
bring yourself so much love andcompassion and you can see it
from this place.
That says these experiences andwhich I've experienced.
When I feel my feelings aboutthem, I recognize that that's
where all the juice is to giveme information about what I'm
ready to let go of, what partsof it have created other parts

(23:03):
of myself, like I'm so proud tobe somebody who is organized,
who gets a lot of things done, who is reliable, who is a leader
.
I'm proud of those parts ofmyself and they came from these
difficult, complicatedsituations that I went through.
Those shadows actually createdsome of my best qualities, but I

(23:27):
don't have to be in thosequalities from a shadow place.
I can be in those qualitiesfrom the bright light that we
were all brought here to be.
This energy of us to expand andawaken means that we can see
ourselves in a new light so that, as these really limiting, old,
sticky, residual, reactive andjust trigger responses that we

(23:54):
have of like how we see theworld, are ready to be shifted.
And what they're saying rightnow, the speak on the super
spiritual end, is that as yourelease these, these, and as you
step more fully into yoursovereignty the sovereignty

(24:14):
being the word that meansnothing on the outside is
determining who you are on theinside.
You are sovereign in yourknowing of who you are Then
those old beliefs and those olddefinitions and those old
holdings and this is who thatperson was and this is who I was

(24:35):
, and this is why it's like thisthey soften and they
energetically release and I justenvision like little sparkle
dusts coming off of them andjust being transmuted back into
the energy of everything andthat what's left is this crystal
clear you who feels feelings, who gets their heart hurt and

(25:00):
broken, who has excitement, whohas joy, who has ambition and
things to do in the world, andalso can feel sadness, can feel
disappointment.
Those are all valid feelings tohave, and the more attuned that
we get to our feelings, theless things are shadow, the more

(25:25):
they're light and the more webecome aware of what feels good
and what doesn't.
And when those things thatdon't feel good are giving you
information about what is leftto be healed or where you're
staying stuck in relationshipsand situations that actually
don't attune or align to you atall.

(25:46):
But we're coming from alimiting belief that says I
can't ask for more, I can't havewhat I need.
Other people's needs are moreimportant.
I'm here to save them and again, that feeling that you're
having, that feels uncomfortable, is giving you more information
of how to release thosepatterns.
And in that, what's fascinatingis not only are you rewriting

(26:11):
your story and rewriting yourbeliefs, you're actually
shifting spiritually where youare in your life.
You're moving to an entirelydifferent spiritual essence of
yourself.
You're also retraining, andwhat the big word right now is
rewiring your mind because thoseneuron paths have been so quick

(26:34):
to fire and go in those oldbelief systems.
You're actually breaking thoseup and moving them into a new
way so that it's very easy toremember who you are.
And that when those hits come, those nuggets of like, oh, like,
oh, I really care about whatpeople think, or I want people
to like this, or I want to saythe right thing, or I don't want

(26:56):
to be in trouble.
I recognize it.
It's like a.
It's like a oh my gosh, it'slike a little thing that shows,
like a little ball that shows upin the air like this bubble, a
belief bubble, and it comes andyou and I can see it and I'm
like, oh yeah, there it is.
This is about not wanting to bein trouble.

(27:17):
This is about being afraid ofwhat people think of me, because
who are they anyway?
This whole being in trouble, being rejected, and that's a
deep, deep shadow of a littlegirl who was just trying to be
safe.
And then I remind myself thatI'm safe.
I remember my sovereign state.
I'm powerless over other people, and what's going on?

(27:39):
This whoosh of love andcompassion comes into my heart,
the bubble pops, and I'mgratitude for it.
I'm so thankful to understandand be able to see myself better
and it gives me thatsovereignty and that strength
and that connection to my source, higher power, creator,

(28:00):
whatever you want to call it,god, jesus, whatever it is for
you.
I feel so held and loved inthat space and I feel safe there
, so that nothing, nothing, nothing can harm me Because I'm
not responsible for all of thoseother things.

(28:23):
And it seems, it seems so, gosh.
I really want to say it seemsso simple, right, it's like,
yeah, well, everybody, we couldall do that.
It's simple but not easy, because those underlying beliefs
are so rooted in and if youreally go into the spirituality

(28:44):
of souls, they may have beenrooted in karmically for
lifetimes awakening and movingtowards.
Can you even imagine movinginto enlightenment, moving into

(29:07):
this place where you really canrelease and allow all that is
around you to be as it is and touse the power of your thoughts
and your voice and everythingthat you think and feel and
believe, to trust thateverything is moving in the
right direction for you and thatyou can open and see with love
in everything, even if thepeople around you are not
choosing the same, and that yourheart can break and hurt and it

(29:31):
can be hard and sad, but thosefeelings are an important part
of being a human being.
But we don't fall back intothose old systems of putting
their lives on the top of ourlist instead of our own healing.
Your healing will make change inthe world around you because

(29:55):
you will see it in a new way,you will feel it in a new way,
you will have compassion in anew way.
This is the process of soulrecovery.
That is the process ofawakening.
It is a process that goes backto the ancients and this is just
one way to name it, define it,walk through it.

(30:17):
But what I want you to know,it's within you already.
I'm not saying anything thatisn't a wisdom that is innately
within you already.
It's about giving youpermission to tap into that
wholeness of who you are andgiving you permission to let go
of the people, the circumstancesaround you and and to turn into

(30:41):
your spiritual journey and tochoose yourself and your healing
.
That's the power of soulrecovery.

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
