I debated whether to record today because 1) I’m having really bad symptoms and felt an alarming but rare sensation that the room was about to flip upside down (room tilt illusion), and 2) I wasn’t confident that I could provide an interesting angle to discomfort and adaptability. But yes, yes, I could…and I did! I feel an unspoken contract to show up daily and talk about what’s going on between my ears. Maybe it’s just the commitment I made when I named it the Recovery Daily Podcast.

Today’s focus is remembering my not-so-long-ago discomfort and failures that led to an incredible life’s story. Over the past couple days, I’ve seen first-hand what skillsets my career as a marketing director are helping me be a better peer recovery supporter.

The illusion of control is only noticeable when plans veer off course. Like a bowling ball bounces off the gutter guards, I was only adapting to life on life’s terms as I simply aimed toward the destination of my choosing. Losing my career after the stroke exposed how little control I ever had. I’m now figuring out which lane I want to try next. Remembering the discomfort and mistakes in my career and living the beautiful outcome of those lessons are tools I use today when the future looks uncertain.
