Today was one of those days where I just needed to stay in the moment. My migraine hasn’t let up (I’m due for my Emgality shot tomorrow), but instead of spiraling into depression, I keep my mind where my feet are. Mental time travel to yesterday and tomorrow breaks my serenity, so I try to stay right here. I made handmade greeting cards to connect with loved ones and say thank you for birthday gifts this month. Creativity and purpose pulled me out of myself and dropped me in to acts of kindness.
Staying present is a skill I learned in sobriety and has saved me on many occasions I faced alone in early recovery. Today, presence helps me navigate chronic pain and the uncertainties in life after stroke.
I heard something powerful today: my stroke wasn’t my fault, but acceptance is my problem. Shifting from blame to ownership opens the door to growth and being happy again. The pain won’t disappear, but I can stop fighting it. When I stop trying to solve tomorrow’s problems that haven’t happened yet and focus only on what’s in front of me, I return to acceptance. One day at a time is emotional survival for me and how I build a life I can love, even on the hard days.
