Have you ever felt like the universe was trying to send you a message? I certainly have. Recently, I had a fall and hit my head, which forced me to take a few days off work.

As a type-A serial entrepreneur who cares deeply about my work, clients, and students, taking a break to care for myself can feel difficult at times. However, I took my accident as a much-needed message from the Universe to slow down and take some time to smell the roses.

If you’re like me, taking a break to look after yourself might feel difficult and even selfish. But in reality, it’s anything but. What is it that they say?

You can’t pour from an empty cup.

In this week’s episode, we discuss the importance of self-care and how to make it a habit. We'll share our favorite self-care practices, including Reiki, and explain how they can help you achieve a deeper sense of well-being.

Tune in to discover how to prioritize yourself and feel better equipped to handle life's challenges. Remember, taking care of yourself is not selfish - it's essential.

Pam (00:57):
Hi everyone.
On this week's podcast, I wantedto talk to you a little bit
about self-care and I wanted tocome to you from the beautiful
spot that we teach Reiki in injust outside of Canberra in
Royal Australia.
Thanks to Mary Merton Ryan andTerry Ryan.
Host us.
We so appreciate you, and Iwanted to show those of you who

(01:19):
are watching on YouTube, thebeautiful blue mountains that
are behind me.
The reason that the mountainsare blue is that when the sun
shines on the eucalyptus, theoils, the eucalyptus oils
released from the trees, and itcauses a blue sheen.
And it causes the mountains tolook blue.

(01:40):
So I really wanted to share thatwith you today from this
beautiful spot.
I'm actually sitting outside inthe porch where we teach our
Reiki classes.
Generally, depending on thetemperatures, occasionally we do
go inside if it's a littlechilly out here.
So I wanted to bring you asunset from the Blue Mountains.

(02:02):
This evening.
We do have some rain.
It's been raining on and offjust a little bit and that's
where we are.
Before we begin, I'd just liketo let you know what we have

Followed by animalcommunication.
I only teach that a few times ayear and even in May Kaurna

So go ahead and join us for thatif you can.

(02:43):
And this summer I also have somewhale classes coming up.
I've got just some plain Reikiclasses in July, but we will be
following those with the whalewatching tour.
And I also have some animalReiki classes in July, August
and September.
Level one and two.
And then in September that'll befollowed by a masterclass, and

(03:04):
those are also followed by awill watching tour.
So if you'd like to join me inCamp Bellow for those, we'd love
to see you there.
You can join those online aswell.
I also wanted to let you know inMay I'll be attending the
Northeast Reiki retreat in NewYork teaching Animal Reiki level

And so whatever you can.

(03:29):
you can join us.
We'd love to see you, whetheryou're reviewing the class or
attending for the first time.
So I wanted to talk this week alittle bit about self-care.
I got a message in January thatI needed to be more diligent
with my self-care, and I have toadmit that I did a little bit,

(03:50):
but not a lot.
I was told to just work a bitless, stretch a bit more, take a
little bit more time for myself.
And I used to be really greatabout self care and then life
got busy and it basically gotbusy when I went to publish my
book.
And at the same time wepurchased our little home on
Campobello that needed loads ofrenovations.

(04:12):
And my work is already busy.
I run three different business.
And as you can tell, I'm inAustralia teaching.
I do also love to travel toteach and travel to present at
different Reiki retreats andthings all over the world.
So life got really busy lastFebruary, March, about this time

(04:34):
last year.
and I really have to say thatself-care went off the rails for
me.
And so in January when I wasaway, I heard very clearly that
I was working too much and toslow down a bit.
And I said yeah I'll slow downsoon.
How many of you have notlistened to your guidance right

(04:54):
away when it came through?
Certainly that was the case forme.
I didn't really listen rightaway.
And Soon and the slowing downwasn't really enough.
So what I was about to hold aReiki share recently, I slipped
on the ice and I hit my head sobadly that I've been skirting

(05:16):
around.
That was about two weeks ago notquite two weeks ago now.
And I hit my head so badly thatI knew it was concussion,
possibility of a concussion, andI know how difficult those can
be.
And it, it led me to a reallytremendous appreciation of my
brain, this big, beautiful brainthat we all have, that breathes

(05:40):
for us, that pumps the bloodthrough our veins, that does all
of these wonderful things thatallow us to be alive and to live
life fully and completely.
And how many times do we.
take it for granted and justassume that it will always be
there for us doing the thing, nomatter that we don't rest enough

(06:03):
or eat well enough or meditateand give it the nourishment that
it needs.
And I realize, wow, this is thisis, I have, I didn't listen.
I need to slow down.
And you had no choice but toslow down with.
Skirting around the edges of aconcussion.

(06:23):
I knew that I could only do acertain amount of screen time.
I was scheduled to come toAustralia and teach.
I really didn't want aconcussion to get in the way of
that.
I still do have a bit of a lumpon my head and you could feel
where it had been bleeding.
There's still, it still hasn'thealed up completely.
So I'm very aware, as recently, the last few weeks as I do too

(06:45):
much, I get headaches and I geta little.
And the energy lets me know thatI've done too much.
So what I wanted to do this weekfor myself as much as for you,
is to just get us back to aplace where we can nourish and
look after ourselves, that wecan realize that we are a.

(07:13):
When I knew that I might nothave the health of my brain and
knew that I might not be able totravel, I might not be able to
do a lot of the things that Iwanted to do.
You realize in those momentsthat if you don't have your
health, you don't have anythingand help really needs to be a
priority, and I wanted to letyou know that before I got off

(07:35):
track with self-care.
I really think I had a prettygood handle on it.
And self-care is not something,it's often something we do as an
afterthought, especially whenyou're a healer, especially when
you're an empath, and you canfeel other people's pain.
And I knew that if I was totruly help people properly, I

(07:59):
needed to look after myself.
To look after myself first, as amatter of fact.
And so what I would do isactually take my calendar and I
would schedule my self care fora year.
And I know that might soundextreme, but as a licensed
teacher, teaching classes, doingregular sessions for people,

(08:19):
having speaking engagements andtraveling, I need to plan my
calendar a year in advance and.
before I, I would sit down and Iwould plan things like my
classes and listen to theenergy.
When should I have this class?
When should I have that class?

(08:39):
What time zone?
You know where?
And as soon as I got that down, the second thing I planned for
the year were, was self-care.
I planned hair appointments.
I planned reflexology.
I planned my monthly.
Reiki session.
I get a Reiki session fromsomeone else each month, and
it's really important to me todo that.

(09:01):
I love to do floats.
There's a place where you canfloat in really salinated water
with that's salinated with upsand salts and it just completely
relaxes my body.
So I would put those in theschedule.
I would plan all of the other.
And so I would get all of thethings that I would, massages,

(09:22):
physiotherapy chiro, proctor, all of these things I would put
in my calendar and get thembooked for the year, and I would
honor them.
I didn't skip them.
If they were in, when they werein the calendar, they were
honored even if things got busyor until things got a little too
busy with my book and I didn'tget my calendar year planned

(09:43):
that year and last year.
The next thing I would do isreally sit there and think about
what do, what nourishes me, whatmakes me feel really good.
And some of the things that Ireally enjoy are daily yoga,
daily self Reiki, walks with mydogs, Reiki walks with my dogs

(10:06):
in the woods as much aspossible.
And so these are things writingin my journal.
These are things that don't costvery much.
They were something that I coulddo daily for me, and it was
within my power to do them everyday.
And so this is the next thingthat I would plan.
I would think about how my day, what my day needed to look like

(10:28):
in order to fit in time for me,and I really thought about it.
I also loved to spend time withthe horses, and that's fallen
off the rails lately too.
So I'd really like to get thatback on the rails.
I like to spend time riding.
I like to bike.
And hike and do things likethat.
So I would actually, work thosein and really work with that.

(10:51):
So I think for a while, until Iget off the rails, about a year
ago, I think my self care wasreally top notch and oh, and I
like to meditate each day, evenjust five or 10 minutes just
meditating in Gassho or with theReiki.
I like to do my self-treatmentagain, even if I only have five
or 10 minutes just to do Reikifor five or 10 minutes each day.

(11:13):
And then I always do a fullerReiki session at night just to
do Gassho throughout the day, that sort of thing.
Just the things that you need todo to keep your energy healthy.
And I used to have people tellme like, holy smokes, you have
so much energy.
And I really think it was justlooking after.
One of the things that I noticedwhen I began to make myself a

(11:37):
priority for self care is Ibecame a better healer and a
better Reiki practitioner, abetter animal communicator, a
better mom, a better animalperson and animal caretaker.
All of these things improved, but it really markedly improved.
The way that I was able toassist people with Reiki, it

(11:58):
became a better.
So I really just wanted to talkwith you about the importance of
self care, and I wanted to putout maybe a little bit of a.
Of a challenge or a goal settingexperience with you.
I've made a commitment sincethis fall and this concussion to

(12:19):
make myself a priority again.
I haven't been a priority forabout 12 months now and maybe a
little longer, and it's time toget that self care back on the
books and to really do thethings.
Keep me healthy and happy.
And so my challenge to you isafter this podcast to sit down

(12:43):
and make a list out of thethings that bring you joy.
It's really important.
The way that we know that we'reon track with our life purpose
is that we are feeling andexperiencing joy regularly.
Quite often we call it our work, and it is work, but it's meant
to be joyous.
It's meant to be joyful.
It's meant to be something thatbrings, lightness to us.

(13:04):
And it nurtures us.
And nourishes us.
That's our work is meant to belike that.
So I'd love you to take a fewmoments.
I've got a whole chapter on thisin the Reiki business book on
self care and I think it's awhole chapter.
It's most of a chapter anyway, and just how important.
To our wellbeing.

(13:25):
So if you do have the Reikibusiness book, grab that and
look at it for some inspirationor some ideas.
And but I'd really like toinvite you to take a few moments
after we're done our meditationtoday after we're done, our
podcast, and to think about whatyou love, what brings you joy,
what would you like to, if therewere no barriers, no blocks, no

(13:49):
limit.
What would you bring into yourlife?
And I'd like to challenge you tostart putting those in.
One of the things in addition tojournaling that I really began
doing from Julia Cameron fromher work of the her creative
work.
Now, I can't think of the nameof the book and I'm sorry,

(14:10):
that's the concussion brainkicking in a little.
But she, the artist's way, andone of the things she even
suggested is take yourself for adate each week.
Just take a few hours and dosomething that really lights you
up.
Go to a museum or if what lightsyou up is going to the library
or going to a market.

(14:31):
My husband's a cook.
He loves to cook and he loves togo to the market and get fresh
vegetables and things like, think of something.
It doesn't have to be extensive.
Although it.
But just think of what lightsyou up and each week take
yourself just you and takeyourself on a date.
Go ahead and do that.
And right now I'm taking somemuch needed rest in Australia.

(14:52):
We are working here too, but weare, we're really blending it
with some sight, seeing somerest, some seeing some friends,
and, to just bring this messagehome to me even further.
On our way here I found out Iwas coming to visit a classmate
who was an exchange student fromAustralia, Robert, and on my way
here to visit Robert, we foundout that another one of our

(15:13):
classmates passed away suddenlylast week.
And, life is just too short notto do the things that you love.
And I'm just gonna say that onemore time.
Life is too short to put off thethings that.
I really brought that messagehome.

(15:34):
And it's also too short not tolet the people who love you and
who you love know that you lovethem, but that will be our
message that their next Reikishare.
We'll be talking about thatthen.
So life is too short not to dothe things that you love.
So I'd like you to give a littlebit of thought of do you love,

(15:54):
and even your.
Treatments, your selftreatments, they're not meant to
be a duty.
Yes your life goes better whenyou do daily self Reiki, but
it's not meant to be somethingyou have to do.
It's meant to be joyful.
If doing your daily self Reikifeels like a chore to you, think
of what would make it morejoyful?
One of the things I do is I putthe symbols all around me and go

(16:17):
for a walk with the dogs.
Anybody who has ever walked withmy dogs know that it's a very
joyful experience.
I've always said Baxter could berenamed joy and Henry could be
renamed love.
And Izzy is just cute.
And Lily as well.
And.
Think about if anything that youdo that you know is good for you

(16:38):
as a chore, I'd really like youto work on reframing that.
How can you do it so that it's ajoy?
One of the things I love doingis doing yoga with myself,
Reiki.
And so while I'm in a yoga poserunning my Reiki, then it just
feels amazing and joyful to me.
It's not a chore at all.

(16:58):
I love.
Listen to a meditation as I doReiki, or even do Reiki as I'm
at the movies or doing somethingelse, just placing my hands on
so that it, I used to look at mydaily self Reiki as a chore,
something I had to do.
And it, it's not something youhave to do.
It's something that will makeyour life more joyful and

(17:18):
pleasurable if you do it.
But think about those thingsthat you, that are good for you,
that feel like a chore, andthink about how to reframe.
So that they're joyful, they'resimple.
They're pleasurable they'reeasy.
And so that's what we're goingto do in this meditation today.
We're going to look at how youcan nurture and nourish you, how

(17:41):
you know, what is the self carethat would be best for you, and
also how to make yourself apriority.
Because quite often with all ofour responsi.
We fall down the list ofpriority and really that just
gets in the way of all of theother things that we want and
need and love to do.

(18:04):
So I'd just like you to bringyour hands into Gassho for a
moment.
Activating your Reiki energy, bringing in your Reiki.
And just make the followingstatement with me.

(18:31):
I am a priority.
The most important thing that Ican do for myself, my clients,
and my loved ones is look after.

(18:52):
And then place your handscomfortably on your body.
Wherever you feel guided andbreathe, just breathing in the
light of Reiki that's all aroundyou, and just allowing the Reiki
energy to lift out any messagestell you that you are not

(19:13):
worthy, you're not worthy oflove, that you're not worthy of.
Prepare that you're not worthyof being nurtured and nourished.
Lift out any messages that placeyou on the bottom of the list of

(19:40):
your priorities without anymessage.
That consider self care, selfish, lift out anything at

(20:05):
all, any beliefs, whetherthey're culturally created,
beliefs or beliefs of your own.
That belief that we have towork.
Life is hard.
Let those go.
One of the things that Reikishows us is that life can be

(20:29):
pleasurable and deep andmeaningful, and loving, and
joyful, and abundant, and thatthere is enough for all of us.
Treating ourselves well, treating ourselves with love and
loving kindness is okay, so justallow that message to sink in.

(20:58):
Treating yourself with lovingkindness.
Treating myself with lovingkindness is not only acceptable.
It's necessary.
It's part of becomingenlightened.
Let go of the beliefs that wouldhold you back and just go ahead

(21:24):
and ask the Reiki energy now toshow you what you want and need
and what would be beneficial foryou.
Allow the Reiki energy tosurround you in a soft cushion,
a cloud of loving kindness andlight, and to show you what self

(22:01):
care would benefit you the most, and how to weave.
That into your daily life, andwe're going to remain here.
For some time today.

(24:23):
Feeling all of the muscles andkeeping the bones in your body
relaxed.
And just once again, asking thequestions show me what brings me
joy and what would be aself-care for me and how would I

(24:47):
weave that into.

(27:39):
Now that you have a few ideas tostart, There's a little bit of
homework with our podcast thisweek.
I'd like you to go ahead andjournal that there were no
limitations.
What would I do?
Where would I go?

(28:01):
What are some of the things Icould do for myself and just
allow these ideas to more fully.
I want to thank you for beingwith me today.
You mean so much to me.
I hope you've enjoyed thislittle glimpse of Australia in
this beautiful spot that we'rein, and the Blue Mountains all

(28:27):
around us.
Thank you for being here.
You are much loved.
I hope that you're able to makeself.
A big part of your day, and I'mgoing to try to do the best to
do that as well.
