Remember the days when Jiffy Pop ruled the kitchen and patience was just part of the process? I'm Rick, and in our latest heartfelt chat, I whisk you away from our modern whirlwind of instant satisfaction to a time where anticipation was savored. Together, we explore how this hunger for the now has seeped into every nook of our existence, right down to our spiritual lives. I share stories from my own journey and from those of biblical heroes, nudging us to rethink our rush for quick fixes and instead, bask in the beauty of patient faith.

Woven throughout our conversation is the theme of waiting—how it's not just about biding time, but about preparation, strength, and deepening our connections with the divine. I delve into the tales of Joseph and David, drawing parallels to our own experiences of awaiting God's timing. Hear how embracing patience is more than a virtue; it's a strategic move in life's chess game, positioning us for the moments where faith and action align. I invite you to join this introspective roundtable, where we ponder the profound joy that comes with standing firm amidst the tides of worry and uncertainty.

As we wrap up our discussion, I encourage you to embody the idea of 'PUSH'—Pray Until Something Happens. It's a powerful reminder that transformation comes through the renewal of the mind and spirit, a concept we dive into with vigor. You'll be inspired to intertwine your faith with daily practice, fortifying your resolve and finding peace in the wait. So gather your friends, share these transformative insights, and stay tuned for more inspiring episodes that challenge us to grow, together in patience and purpose.

Speaker 1 (00:04):
Hey, welcome to Renewed Mindsets, where we study
the basics of the faith throughthe lens of our middle-aged
experiences.
I'm Rick.
Welcome to the show where Ihelp you, gen Xers and
Millennials, navigatespiritually through a world that
looks nothing like we expectedback when cars were square and
mullets were totally awesome.
I am so glad you're here.
Nothing like we expected back, when cars were square and

(00:26):
mullets were totally awesome.
I am so glad you're here.
Do you remember when you were akid and you made popcorn?
Y'all remember Jiffy Pop.
It was that aluminum frying panwith that little aluminum
handle on it and it had foilover the top and you'd light the

(00:47):
stove, turn the electric eye onthe stove and put that pan on
top and shake it around and itwould pop inside that tray and
the aluminum foil would expandinto a big ball man, that was so
much fun.
But you know it took like five, six, ten minutes to make and my

(01:16):
mom used to make it in a pot.
She'd put a little oil in thebottom and then put a half a cup
of popcorn in the bottom of thebowl and stick a lid on top.
She'd shake it.
Every so often It'd startpopping.
You'd hear it pop, pop pop andthen it would eventually start
popping fast and push the lid up.
That still took about 10minutes.

(01:38):
Now we got microwave popcorn.
I found myself the other daymaking some popcorn Popcorn's
good.
I stood there impatient at themicrowave because I think it
takes less than two minutes nowto pop popcorn in a bag, but I'm

(02:03):
huffing like I want my popcorn.
It's been 53 seconds.
That's the world we're livingin.
Now.
We have been consumed withinstantaneous gratification.
All of us, not just youngpeople, all the generations,
even our parents, the boomers.

(02:25):
They've got to be gratifiedimmediately.
And I'm guilty, just like I said.
I mean, I get caught watchingthese reels that are supposed to
entertain us.
They put them on YouTube, theyput them on Facebook, they got
them on TikTok, but I am notgetting a TikTok.
Now.
If you search and you findrenewed mindsets on a TikTok yes

(02:48):
, I did start one.
I don't think I ever postedanything and I just felt too
much like a 13-year-old girl tobe using TikTok.
But you watch one and then thenext thing you know you're
caught up in this rabbit hole ofvideos and an hour's gone by
and you just planned on watchingone video.

(03:09):
My pastor sends them to me andthey're funny.
But he sends one to me and Iwatch it and I'm like, well, I
gotta find something to send himback.
Next thing, you know, we'vespent 20 minutes sending videos
back and forth to each other.
It's made us insatiable.
Next thing, you know, we'vespent 20 minutes sending videos
back and forth to each other.
It's made us insatiable forlaughter or one-upping somebody

(03:34):
else.
We can't even listen to aconversation now without getting
lost in our head because theconversation's taking too long.
If this podcast goes more than45 minutes or an hour, I can
tell you.
I can look at the metrics.
I can tell you when everybodystarts getting lost.
It doesn't matter how good thisrevelation is, it doesn't

(03:58):
matter how awesome this messagethat God gave me is.
Whenever I start one, I can see.
I can look at the timeline.
When that thing starts, y'allare all in.
I can see the graph Everybody'sexcited, man, the word of God,
what's Rick going to talk abouttoday?
But as the minutes tick by man,by the time you get to the end

(04:23):
of a 30 or 40 minute podcast, Isee like one or two of you left.
If it's taking longer than wefeel like it should, then the
listens go down, the downloadsare done Dead, nobody can engage
for longer than about 15seconds anymore.

(04:45):
We got all this stuff in ourlife that gratifies us instantly
, especially in this country.
And, man, if we're honest, howoften do we expect God to
instantly gratify us and give usour promises?
How often do we want God rightnow?
God told me something and rightnow I want it to be made whole

(05:09):
in my life.
I want it to be manifest now,and if it takes two weeks, then
I've already lost interest.
My mind's off somewhere else.
If it takes longer than sixmonths, I've really lost
interest and I'm guilty about it.
I'm not preaching to youbecause it's something I don't
understand.
I can preach it to you because, dude, that's me.

(05:33):
God is trying to get us as abody to be unified, to be
matured, so that we can take ourchurch outside the four walls.
I feel it.
I desperately feel it.
We've got to get outside of thefour walls of the church now.
The anointing of God is real, and it's real in your church,

(05:55):
it's real in my house, it's realwhere I go to church, and
sometimes I just can't wait.
I'm ready to do it now, I'mready to go now.
But you know what, if we gobefore, it's time, before
everybody is ready.
We've been patient witheverybody and everybody has a

(06:17):
good, solid foundation.
You've got to wait until thatpoint Because if you go before,
then people are going to crumbleand fall away.
Because when you go out intothe real world where there's an
absolute, real devil and youbegin to come against the
kingdom of darkness and fightingagainst hell and all the

(06:40):
religious people are hatingagainst you and all the demonic
people are hating against youand all the demonic people are
hating against you you got tohave a backbone.
You got to have a backbone madeof steel and be able to stand
up against that.
So until you can get your groupof people all in one accord,
you really can't go outside thefour walls of your church.

(07:03):
But we have to get going.
I'm telling you at my churchwe're going to get going and
then you're growing and people, people, you will see it, people
will grow in the Lord.

(07:24):
It's happened in my life.
In nine months I've gone fromcan to can't and I'm not even
there.
I'm not even close to beingwhere I need to be and sometimes
I think I don't think I've madeany progress at all.
And then somebody will saysomething to me and say, man, I

(07:46):
just see something in you andI'm not bragging on myself, but
it is my show and I've got totalk about something.
If you look at my life a yearago at this time it's a
completely different person.
Sometimes I don't feel likeI've grown at all, but when I

(08:09):
look back on the year and I cansee the picture of my life, I'm
telling you it'll make me cry, because I can see what God has
done in my life.
It just takes time.
We've got to be patient andwait.
But the truth is we don'tdeserve it.

(08:29):
We don't serve a microwave God.
We don't serve a God that wecan just pop our problems into
and boom, we got a bowl of popdeliverance.
It's just going to take ourproblems and dump them out.

(08:51):
Sometimes we're in a big oldhurry and God's not.
God wants us to seek his faceand pray, and at times he wants
us to even fast from certainthings.
As we wait for him, as we waitfor his divine answers and seek

(09:13):
his face and pray and sometimesfast.
That's what God wants from us.
I am so busy I'm about to move.
If you've been with thispodcast since the beginning, you
know I live in an RV and I amway off, an hour and 20 minutes

(09:35):
from everybody that I know.
So, going to church onWednesday and a Friday night for
prayer meeting and then Sunday,I'm spending, you know, three
hours driving three days a week.

(09:57):
That's nine hours.
I'm in the vehicle and I ammoving five miles from the
church.
I am so excited I'm going to beable to participate more.
Okay, I'm going to tell thetruth.
I'm excited because I'm gettinglike nine or ten extra hours a

(10:19):
week.
I'm excited because I mighttake that ten hours and split it
up and get an extra hour ofsleep a night for an even six
hours.
I'm not complaining, lord, I'mnot complaining.
We're at a thing right now atmy church that if we complain,
we got to put a dollar in tohelp support the school that we

(10:41):
have.
Man, those kids are going to begetting some good stuff because
we are all complainers.
But I digress.
This is not a podcast aboutcomplaints.
This is a complaint.
This is a podcast aboutgratification and patience.

(11:02):
If you know me, if you've seenme, I'm a big guy.
I'm not going to give you theweight, but I am 6'4" so I'm
tall.
But sometimes I get so busy andso caught up between work and
coming home and working on theshows this podcast and the

(11:24):
Wisdom for the Day podcast andthe videos that I got putting
out and wanted to talk to aspecial lady in my life, special
lady in my life.
I sound like somebody from the70s Lady, but I don't have time
for everything.
Sometimes I forget to eat.

(11:44):
I think that's why I'm fat,because when I finally remember
I got to eat, I usually eatsomething bad McDonald's.
I'm 56 years old.
I need to quit eating atMcDonald's.
I need to quit eating ramennoodles.
I probably wouldn't look so fatif I quit eating ramen noodles.
I think I'm just retainingwater.

(12:05):
Jeez, I do sound like an old man, but sometimes I'll realize
it's 7 o'clock at night.
I haven't eaten anything allday and then I'm starving and
I'm like I got to finish thisshow and if I stop to eat I'm
not going to get to bed beforemidnight and I just run and I

(12:29):
run, and I run, and I run andit's just like life.
I'm running around in circlestrying to get stuff done,
waiting for a promise from Godto become a reality.
I mean, that's a natural partof being a Christian, but
unfortunately a lot of believersgive themselves over to worry,

(12:51):
waiting for the time that God'sblessing comes.
And for those of us that getstuck in that worry of waiting
on what God's going to do, itseems like the second hand on
your watch is just not movingand you sit there and look at
the clock.
You know what I'm talking about.

(13:12):
Waiting is the worst thing inthe world Because you'd be
sitting there and you're likeokay, I know an hour's gone by.
I call it conference calls forwork.
I'm like, how could thisconference call have been an
hour already?
And I look at my watch and it'sbeen five minutes and you would

(13:34):
have sworn that you've been onthis thing for an hour.
But anyway, the second hand'snot moving.
It's the middle of the night.
It's the middle of the night.
It's the middle of the day.
Dying's never coming.
Pain might endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning.

(13:57):
You don't get that.
We're stuck.
The worry on the weight causesall kind of grief and problems
in our lives.
We've got to come out of thismindset.

(14:19):
If that sounds familiar, it'sbecause this show is all about
mindsets the worry of waiting.
Where's it going?
When's it going to get here?
Some of us have read the entirethird chapter of Ecclesiastes

(14:42):
and we know that there's a timeand a purpose for everything
under heaven.
We all know that.
We know that in the scripturesit says we're supposed to be
patient, but we still get caughtup in this world.
How many times are we going toask God when is this going to
materialize?
When is this thing going tomanifest in my life?

(15:06):
When am I going to get thatpromotion?
When is this podcast going toexplode to where I can quit
working and just make content 24hours a day?
Am I ever going to get married?

(15:29):
They're all promises from Godto me.
I want them all now.
When's it going to happen?
You can only imagine that theBible doesn't say it, even
though you can look in it allyou want.
Look back in the Old Testament.

(15:50):
Those people had the ability towait a lot longer than we ever
had to wait, my goodness.
Everything they made, everything they had to eat.
They had to grow it.
They had to grind it.
They had to grow it.
They had to grind it.
They had to prepare it.
They had to get it ready.
If they had a headache.

(16:15):
They had to get the leaves andthe herbs and grind them and
make them into a poultice.
I knew I was going to be ableto use the word poultice at some
point in this podcast.
You got to grow it and dry itand prepare it.
Everything had to be prepared.
Those people knew how to wait.
Now you better not get sick inthe Old Testament because it's
going to be a month before theyget that Old Testament Tylenol

(16:36):
fixed.
I mean you got to prepare wayahead of time for the slow times
and the times that you don'tget things done or exactly when
you want it.
Patience, patience.
What about Joseph?
Whenever he was a servant inthe house of Potterford, god

(16:59):
gave him a dream, god gave him apurpose.
God told him what he was goingto do and where he was going to
be when he did it.
And his brothers told him thathe was full of pride and
arrogance and they hated hisguts because of the promise that
God gave him on his life.
And he spoke of that promise ofGod and it made him angry and

(17:19):
so they sold him out.
They were going to kill him,but they sold him out.
He ended up being a slave inthe house of Potiphar.
Now, how many times when he wasin that house as a slave, did
he think?
Maybe I am prideful, but Godtold me this was going to happen

(17:40):
.
When is this going to happen, god?
When is this going to happen?
When is this going to happen, god?
When is this going to happen?
Well, then it gets worsebecause he's accused of
something that he didn't even doand he's thrown into prison.
Now I would imagine that the man, when he was thrown in prison
for something that he wasabsolutely innocent for, just

(18:00):
said why?
Why, you know, he had to be inconstant communication with God
to hold on to that promise, apromise that he couldn't see
anymore.
He had to be talking to God inprayer all the time, asking God
when God, when is it going tohappen?
And God's like asking God whenGod, when is it going to happen?

(18:22):
And God's like not yet.
Son, I can only imagine thatDavid, when he was running for
his life for the promise thatGod gave him, the promise that
God anointed for him to be kingof Israel, david's running for
his life from Saul.
For a long time he ran.

(18:44):
He had to wait and hide incaves.
I'm sure there seemed times inhis life when he thought this
ain't never going to happen.
How many times did David saywhen, lord, when, I don't know.
Maybe once, maybe none, maybe40,000.

(19:10):
I can't tell you, but I canonly imagine that he did.
Man, how do you respond?
How do you respond?
How you respond is vital whenyou're in the waiting.

(19:34):
That's how you deal with thewill of God To give us each a
great victory in our lives.
But there's times when thosevictories only come after a
season of waiting.
A season of waiting, oh, youknow, we pray sometimes and God
brings rain.
He brings rain from heaven andit falls all year long.

(19:59):
You plant something and therains can come through the
summer and the winter and thespring and the fall.
And if it's in the spring thatrain comes and it instantly
waters the vegetation, itdoesn't matter how long the
drought was.
Things will start growing assoon as it gets watered, as soon

(20:24):
as they can get those nutrientsin through their roots.
But sometimes God sends thatprecipitate.
Listen to me precipitate.
Sometimes God makes it snow andthere's seeds in the ground and
there's snow sitting at the top, and so even when it all falls

(20:49):
onto the ground.
It sits on top of that groundand nothing gets watered until
the next season when it warms upand that snow melts and that
water gets into those roots.
Sometimes we have to wait on theseason.
We got to wait on God to getthose promises, but know that

(21:12):
it's coming A lot of times.
Many times, god will describethe kingdom of God as a garden
that you plant everything in thekingdom of God.
Everything that we do,everything that we see,
everything that we say is a seedand it's planted.

(21:32):
It's seed time in harvest.
So if you plant that seed, youwork that seed, god waters that
seed and then later on, after, after you've waited, after
you've taken care of it, you getfrom the seed and you get a
bountiful harvest.
You put one seed in the groundand you might get 70 tomatoes

(21:55):
from one plant.
But if you don't take care ofit properly, take care of it
properly, you're going to getless.
It has to be prepared.
How you respond while you're inwaiting is vital.
In John 16, 33, jesus gave areality check to some man In

(22:18):
this world.
You got tribulations and trialsand distress and frustration In
this world.
You got tribulations and trialsand distress and frustration,
but aren't you glad that Goddoesn't stop there?
He said for us to be of goodcheer, and that's hard for all
of us, because some of us havebeen baptized in lemon juice.

(22:41):
Oh, my goodness, you've seenthose sour pusses in lemon juice
.
Oh my goodness, you've seenthose sourpusses in church
before the music's playing.
And you've got your regularsthat are just worshiping and
praising and dancing and singing, and you've got those old
sourpusses sitting there withthe frown on their face, not

(23:01):
moving.
I'm kind of one of them, andit's not because I've been
baptized in lemon juice, it'sjust.
My pastor calls me a giant.
I think I'm taller than mosteverybody in the church.
I'm definitely bigger than mosteverybody else.
I just kind of feel like Istick out like a sore thumb
sometimes and I'm not realgraceful.

(23:23):
So there ain't a whole lot ofdancing that can get done in my
life that people aren't likelook at that.
Now, that's an issue that Ihave that I might have to get
over.
But I also don't do a lot ofjumping around because, let's
face it, I'm 56.
I got two knees that probablyneed replacing.

(23:45):
I got gout.
Something's always hurting, butis that why I'm not doing it.
No, no, it's not when thatmusic gets to moving.
Sigh, no, it's not when thatmusic gets to moving.

(24:08):
We just need to quit being sodead.
We need to realize that thepower of God can be in your life
and if you wake up, then you'renot dead.
But if you're dead, you chooseto be dead.
If you're in a house of God onthe weekend, on Sunday, that has

(24:28):
life.
You need to wake up and takeadvantage of it.
Quit choosing the wrong pathand get on the right one.
You got to get on the rightpath and give thanks to God.
How many times do you have tosay it?

(24:48):
How many times do you have tohear it, that the wrong path is
going to lead to absolute misery?
It does.
You listening right now?
Were you a drug addict?
Were you an alcoholic?
Are you stuck watchingpornography?

(25:10):
You couldn't get out of it andit ruined your marriage.
Wake up.
That's not good.
You are miserable and there'sno way out of that misery.
Sin takes you way further thanyou ever wanted to go and it
keeps you way longer than youever wanted to stay.
My goodness, if you can't feelthe spirit right now, I don't

(25:40):
know if you're ever going tohear it.
Praise Jesus.
I thank God every single day.
My life's not perfect it's farfrom it but I thank God every
day that I am baptized in theHoly Spirit.
But I thank God for some of thepeople that I know that get on

(26:07):
my nerves.
I'm serious, I have to, becauseI'm sure they're praying the
same thing for me.
Man, I like that Rick, but boydoes he get on my nerves.
Our success and our failure inthe dark, difficult times does

(26:29):
not hinge on our circumstances.
It hinges on how we respond tothe trials and troubles that we
face.
When you're in the waiting andeverything seems dark and bleak
and you think it's not going tohappen and why is it taking so

(26:50):
long the last thing you want todo is be in good cheer.
You want to wallow in misery, because that's what the flesh
likes to do.
I don't know why, but it does.
And misery loves company.

(27:15):
You'll see, miserable peoplewill just gravitate towards a
crowd and then people who areperfectly fine will jump on the
misery bandwagon.
Somebody I heard once called itjoy zappers.
Don't be a joy zapper.
My pastor can make the mostdifficult situation seem like

(27:45):
it's nothing but a thing Becausehe trusts God.
He's seen God in the best times.
He's seen God in the worsttimes.
He understands that there's atime of waiting and that's

(28:10):
something that I've learned fromhim, because they've seen it in
real time.
They've seen so many peoplecome through that were in a
season of darkness, that came inand got deliverance and started
changing their life and startedseeing the promises of God come

(28:31):
to fruition in their life.
You need to understand that.
Jesus said that he has overcomethe world.
Jesus deprived it of its powerto harm you and he conquered it
for you.
He overcame the world anddeprived the world of its power
over you.
When he said that you have tounderstand that you don't start

(28:54):
out in a place of defeat, butyou start out now at a place of
victory, because Jesus wasvictorious and you get to be
victorious because of what hedid.
You've got to be in good cheer, you've got to be happy, you've
got to be joyful, you've got toget excited about what God is

(29:14):
going to do in your life, evenif it takes 40 years, because it
doesn't hinge on ourcircumstances, it doesn't change
it one bit.
We stand in the middle of alarge storm.
Can you recognize it in yourown self.

(29:38):
When you're standing in themiddle of a storm, it seems like
that storm has become our wayof life.
We can't see a way out, wedon't know which direction to go
, we feel defeated and broken, and that brokenness produces

(29:58):
cynicism that's just going tokeep us forever in that deep,
muddy mire of only thinking thatwe're broken and the world is
broken and our life is broken, and that the wind and the waves
and the storm, the rains and thethunder and lightning, your

(30:20):
brokenheartedness, your sins, that's all there's ever going to
be.
The choice is yours, though.
Your sins, that's all there'sever going to be.
The choice is yours, though, ifyou want to stay stuck in that
place of defeat, in that placeof depression and oppression
that comes over your life.
That's your choice.
You have to choose to be upsetor to be glad.

(30:44):
Amen, right, there's no doubtthat times of waiting can be
discouraging and exhausting, butin the 40th chapter, isaiah,
verse 31, it says those who waiton the Lord shall renew their
strength.
They shall mount up with wingslike eagles.

(31:04):
They shall run and not be weary.
They shall walk and not faint.
Do you know what that wordmeans in Hebrew, weight?
In that verse.
It's kava, k-a-v-a, maybeQ-A-B-H, I don't know.

(31:25):
It's kava.
It means to bind or twisttogether.
Picture this multiple pieces ofrope that have been braided
together to make one new, largercord.
That's what the Bible says thatwe should do to renew our

(31:47):
strength.
To wait on the Lord means to bewith others, to be braided and
interwoven with the Lord in hispresence.
That's going to renew yourstrength.
In order to experience God'spower and strength, he infuses a

(32:09):
union.
You need to take time to bealone with God, and those that
are braided together andinterwoven with God are going to
renew their strength.
That's why we go to church toget interwoven with other
believers.
It makes that wait a lot easier.

(32:31):
How do you wait?
How do you wait?
You got to spend time in prayerwith the Lord.
You got to spend time readinghis word.
You need a relationship withhim.
Do you understand what I'msaying?

(32:54):
You need to be interwoven withGod.
You need to push.
You remember that Push Prayuntil something happens.
Well, you know, I was a youthpastor in the 90s.
If I'm talking about push, wehad wristbands and t-shirts and

(33:21):
hats.
Push, we also had them.
That said booger.
Being obedient of God evokesrighteousness, just so you know.
Push Pray until somethinghappens.
Where did we lose that?
Where did we get lost in notdoing that, lord, bless me, lord

(33:44):
, bless me, lord, bless me,father.
No more, hurry up, lord.
When do we start doing that, instead of pressing and pressing
through and pressing andpressing on and pressing through
?
Nothing's happened yet.
But I found God.
So I'm going to keep onpressing and I'm going to keep
on praying, and I'm going tokeep on praying and I'm going to

(34:05):
keep on until something changes, until the presence of God
falls in my body Right.
Are you doing it that way?
Because you can't be interwovenwith God if you're not.
You got to be bound togetherwith God.
You got to be bound togetherwith God.

(34:26):
We're called to do things forGod.
You got to be interwoven withhim.
Well, that's all for thisweek's show.
You know the name of this showspeaks my hope for you.

(34:50):

renewal of your mind that bytesting, you may discern what is
the will of God, what is goodand acceptable and perfect.
