In this episode of the Reshape and Recover Podcast, Julie and Tony dive into one of the most transformational (and often intimidating) parts of recovery — Step Four: “Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.”
Many fear this step because it means facing the truth — our patterns, our pain, and the ways we’ve been hurt or have hurt others. But Step Four isn’t about shame. It’s about freedom through honesty and surrender.
Drawing wisdom from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, Scripture, and their personal experiences, Julie and Tony walk listeners through the purpose of this step and how to begin it — not with condemnation, but with grace, courage, and hope.
They explore why resentment is often the number one block to freedom, how fear, shame, and perfectionism keep us stuck, and how we can overcome them with God's help. They also discuss the difference between character defects and personal identity, and how we can examine our patterns without falling into guilt.
You’ll be reminded that healing begins with spirit-led self-examination — and that you don’t have to walk this alone. Scripture like Psalm 139:23–24 (“Search me, O God…”), Romans 8:1 (“There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus”), John 8:32 (“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free”), and James 5:16 (“Confess your sins to one another… so that you may be healed”) offer encouragement throughout.
Julie shares how her own healing began with this step, and why walking it out in community makes all the difference. You don’t have to be perfect — you just have to be willing. And God will meet you right there.
Whether you're just beginning your recovery or need a fresh start, this episode will help you see Step Four not as a burden — but as a breakthrough.
