What's it like to be the voice that gets you up that brutal hill during a runDisney race? In this milestone episode, we pull back the curtain with Disney entertainer Jodi Chase, who reveals the method behind the "annoying" character she portrays alongside her race course partner Angie. "We're trying to be as annoying as possible so that you will not want to stop," Jody laughs, explaining how this strategy actually helps distract exhausted runners from their pain.

Beyond her hill-side encouragement, Jodi takes us through her fascinating 30-year Disney career spanning iconic experiences from Citizens of Hollywood to World Showcase storytelling. She shares how she met her husband (fellow runDisney announcer John Pelkey) at Universal's Horror Makeup Show, and details her unexpected journey into race announcing. The conversation reveals the remarkable stamina required to keep high energy for hours while motivating thousands of runners in all weather conditions. "When it's sideways rain, we've got to go in, no ifs, ands, or buts about it," she explains about typical protocol, "but we felt so bad... we were just yelling at people as they're running by, making hopefully people laugh in those little moments where they were just like 'this is the worst thing ever.'"

We also explore Jodi's passionate work founding A Better Life Pet Rescue, a foster-based organization she ran for two decades, saving countless animals from euthanasia. Meanwhile, the hosts share their Springtime Surprise registration experiences, summer training challenges in record heat, and welcome Jake and his 8-year-old son Teddy for a heartwarming Race Report Spotlight about their Fenway Park 5K benefiting veterans.

Whether you're curious about the people behind those encouraging voices on course, looking for motivation to push through summer training, or simply want to feel connected to the broader running community, this episode bridges the magic of Disney entertainment with the heart of the running experience. Join us for the kick-off of our third century of podcasts as we continue rising and running together!

Speaker 3 (04:27):
Thank you, hey.
I want to one last time revisitepisode 200.
I listened to it.
Of course, I was here for therecording.
You guys remember that.

Speaker 4 (04:39):
No, I don't.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Of course I enjoyed it, but I enjoyed listening,
because I miss things.
Two things I wanted tohighlight that I don't think we
highlighted enough, and one's atthe very beginning.
Debbie, that intro that yougave us was most creative and
clever and it kind of got buriedwith the new theme song and the

(05:01):
excitement of the episode.
So I wanted to again Debbiefrom Gainesville.
I wanted to single Debbie outand thank her for spending the
time and energy to do that.
That was fantastic.

Speaker 4 (05:13):
I think it kind of fit it really well in the
beginning.
It really did.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
It really, really did , and I know I meant to talk
about it but when I listened Irealized I kind of glossed over
that.
So there you go, debbie.
That was fantastic.
I also, when we, when we askedfor messages and we got them and
we are so delighted that youdid that we knew you wouldn't
disappoint.
At first we talked about maybewe should say something before

(05:41):
or after each one and werealized there were just too
many and it would take too longand we couldn't do that
practically.
But a deep and heartfelt thankyou from all of us for those
many, many wonderful messagesand they were heartfelt, really
appreciated and we really lovethem.

(06:02):
So thank you for that.
Hey, let's take a look attraining.
We are five weeks away from theHalloween Challenge at
Disneyland.
Halloween Race Weekend atDisneyland, 35 days from today,
is the Expo.

(06:22):
You are in training week 13.
And you have four miles with amagic mile this weekend.
We're 12 weeks away from Wineand Dine.
Now You're in training week six.
You've got a long run of sixand a half miles.

(06:43):
You've got a long run of sixand a half miles and marathon
weekend is 23 weeks away.
You're in training week five.
If you're doing the dopey, you've got a three mile long run
.
If you're using the experiencedtraining schedule for the

(07:07):
marathon, you got four miles.
And since we're going to talkabout it in just a little bit
springtime surprise is 37 weeksaway.
We got a little time yet, butwe'll start training for that in
.
Oh gosh, I guess we're abouthalfway, because the training
schedule is 18 weeks, I think.
So we got a little ways to goyet.
Since we're talking training,we got any training updates,

(07:29):
friends?

Speaker 5 (07:30):
Yeah, so last week I had talked about doing my first
run in a couple months and ithad gone successfully and I
completed all three of my runslast week, which made me really
proud, and my back is doingreally good, so I'm on the right
track.
I'm very happy about that, soyeah, so am I.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
That's good.
That's good, alicia, I'm gladto hear that.
I'm always glad to hear it frommany of our friends, and
especially with the friends Iknow so well, like you.
That's great.
Well, you know, I'm fond ofsaying if it's hot where you are
, it's hot.
It's been record setting hothere in this part of the country
.
Obviously, record setting.

(08:09):
That's unusual.
Uh, I woke up this morning, 5AM, the feels like temperature
was 97, but I did go out and Icontinued to go out and just go
easy.
If it's hot where you are, it'shot.
The fact that I mean we were oncustomized training and by the
time nine o'clock ran around, the feels like in Clearwater was

(08:32):
113 and people were saying,well, it's only 103 here.
If you're not used to that, that's hot, okay.
So just do what you need to do.

Speaker 9 (08:44):
So for once I have a training update.
Has been a long time.
So, as some of you know, ifyou've been following my social
media I was in Japan.
I went to Tokyo and TokyoDisney last week.

Speaker 6 (08:58):
Ah, sugoi desu ne.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
I don't know, what that means.

Speaker 6 (09:02):
That means very good.

Speaker 9 (09:05):
I didn't pick up any Japanese.
I tried, but I mostly used myTranslate app.
But as part of the trainingupdate, it was fun and all and
it was amazing.
If you want to know more, message me.
But I calculated it up.
My Fitbit was tracking it In 10days I did 65.1 miles.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
Wow.

Speaker 9 (09:31):
And my plantar fasciitis didn't flare up.
Oh good.
I was tired, of course, but Ididn't have any injury type
things and it was freaking hot,but I was pretty pleased about
that, considering that I havenot been running or or doing um

(09:52):
much walking or anything likethat.
I was like good for Lexi, um.
And then I have been going tothe gym and um I I guess I can
officially say I will be doingspringtime.
I'm not sure what yet, becauseI did not register today.
I'm going to have to registerat a different time, but that's

(10:13):
going to be my first Run Disneyrace of the year, actually of
the season.

Speaker 6 (10:19):
So my training update is things are going well.
I'm very happy with my paces.
I'm getting more comfortablewith my paces.
That I've been concerned aboutever since I ran that magic half
mile a couple of weeks ago yeahbut the the real main thing I
wanted to talk about today andand and this goes to the heat,

(10:40):
bob, and you know what you weresaying is you know if it's hot
where you are, it's hot.
I have talked many times onthis podcast about the idea that
, no matter what I do, I just Icannot get out of bed early.
It I mean if I have an achillesheel, it is that.
So when I do have the motivationto finally crawl out of bed and

(11:01):
and get moving, you know I amdealing with, you know hotter
temperatures than I, you know I,you know than I could have
dealt with a couple of hoursearlier, and this past weekend I
had one of the specializedworkouts that Coach Twiggs gives
us in the customized trainingprogram, and it's all about

(11:23):
paces and making know, makingsure that you know you can
mentally hit something, even ifyou're tired towards the end of
it.
But as I was lacing up my shoes, I realized, you know, galloway
, you know, is really big on.
You know, when the real fieldis over 60, you know, start
bumping that time down.
So I had sent a message tocoach.
I was like, well, do I need tomake any adaptations to this

(11:46):
workout to accommodate for heat?
And he immediately got back tome.
He's like, yeah, instead of itbeing a minute faster, bump it
down to 30 seconds.
And so that was really, reallyhelpful.
That allowed me to completethat workout and get to the
paces that I needed to.
And so the story with that is isthat if you are working with a
coach, never, never, beapprehensive to reach out with

(12:09):
them.
Alicia, I'm sure you probablysay the exact same thing to your
clients as well.
You know, I mean, you know, sure there are plenty of times
where I'm thinking like, oh, youknow, I'm going to be a burden
on coach if I ask him this youknow, even if it's just a text
message, but at the end of theday, coaches are are wonderful
people that they want to helpyou there just to begin with,

(12:35):
but at the same time, too, it'salso why we pay them.
So you know again, never, youknow, never.
Be apprehensive.
In order to, you know, talk toyour coach to make sure that you
can have the right workout oran adaptive workout to make sure
that you are successful.
The other thing I wanted to talkabout for me and I know I've
talked about this in the past isright now I'm on this weight
loss journey, and in the weekswhere the scale doesn't go the

(12:56):
way that I want to, I always tryto focus on the concept of the
non-scale victory, and this pastsaturday, on my long run, I had
a non-scale victory and thatwas for the first time in public
.
I pulled a tony.
I was a half a mile away frommy car and with the heat and

(13:21):
humidity that we had here inPennsylvania, it felt like soup
and my shirt was drenched and Ifelt really constrictive and
even though I was on the publictrail, I took that shirt off and
I felt some sort of liberatingfreedom, and I instantly cooled

(13:42):
down and I just felt so muchbetter.
And again I channeled down andI and I just felt so much better
.
And you know, again I channeledmy inner, my inner, tony, and
you know, and that gave me theconfidence to, you know, finish
the end of that run and I'm notsaying this because I want to
gloat about my weight loss or,you know a boost in my
self-confidence.
The reason why I want to tellthis story is is that,

(14:05):
regardless of your body type, ifyou feel like you need to do
that in order to cool down, doit.
Love yourself, love your body.
Don't care what other people orwhat other runners may think.
You are a beautiful person andyou should have the freedom for

(14:29):
yourself to do that.
So if you're one of thosepeople that's like, oh, I wish I
could run in the sports bra orsomething like that, do it there
.
There's no, there's no rule.
There's no rule against it,just go out, you know.
So if you want to run that youknow that training run without a
shirt on or you want to run injust a sports bra or something
like that, do it, celebrate youand I promise you, once you have

(14:51):
the self-confidence to do it.
It will be just such aliberating feeling, and you
should be so proud of yourself.
So that's the message I wantedto instill to everybody.
Okay.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
I'm not running in a sports bra, greg, okay.

Speaker 5 (15:04):
All right, okay, I'm not running in a sports.
Bra, greg, okay, fair enoughSex costume.

Speaker 3 (15:09):
Very good, very good.
And I haven't run without ashirt since I was in my 30s.
Yes, they had shirts back then, part of the reason I do not
live in a retirement communityalthough you could argue that
Florida is in itself one largeretirement community but there

(15:39):
are a bunch of guys my age andolder around here who walk,
sometimes during the day, without their shirt.
Yeah, they're not setting agood example, so I'll leave mine
on, it's OK.
It's good, though.
I'm happy for you.

Speaker 7 (15:48):
For you, that's good, I'm glad things are going well
for you.
Caution runners.

Speaker 3 (15:51):
Change of topic ahead hey, since we're talking about
weather, here's a question we'vehad in our notes for a while.
I'm gonna spring it on youright now what's the worst
weather that you've run in at aDisney World event?

Speaker 5 (16:07):
Marathon 2020.

Speaker 3 (16:08):
Marathon 20?

Speaker 5 (16:09):
That was the really really, really hot one.
Yeah, not only was it hot, andso it was an agonizing marathon
to get through, but it was somentally taxing watching so many
people drop as I was running.
Um, so overall that that wasthe the top, top of it.

Speaker 3 (16:31):
I understand that.
I do understand that I gotthrough that one, but I trained
down here.

Speaker 5 (16:37):
Right, yes.
It's very different fromMinnesota to go down there um in
the winter time and have it bethat hot.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
So I just it was warm , it was warm there's no
question about that, but yeah, that was, that was different.

Speaker 6 (16:52):
Yeah, bob, that's a good one because, I knock on
wood, I've never had to run arun Disney race in torrential
downpours because when remember, when we had the half of the
half in 2024, the heavens openedup as I was waiting to get back

(17:13):
on the bus.
so it so, technically, the worstrun disney weather I ever had
to deal with was just gettingfrom seeing myra back to my room
in pop century so I don't knowif that counts, uh, but in terms
of the actual race, I mean itwas nothing like earth
shattering or like headlineworthy, but I would say the wine

(17:35):
and dine half from this pastyear, I, I felt like that that
got for a northerner.
It got really warm reallyquickly.
And I believe the humiditylevel was pretty high.
But great, Nothing that notlike 2020 by any means

(17:55):
whatsoever, but yeah, that wasprobably the worst I've ever run
in.

Speaker 9 (18:01):
So I don't have a run Disney Florida race that has
been super hot or rainy oranything like that Knock on wood
.
But the one that was completelymiserable for the last three

(18:32):
miles was the Smoky Mountain.
In I believe that was 2021 thatJack and I did.
The last three miles weredirectly in the sun, there was
no shade and I believe it got upto 90 in the mountains and that
was that was the hottest thatI've been for sure.

Speaker 3 (18:43):
The worst weather I can remember at Disney World was
for me personally was when wecame back from COVID for Wine
and Dine and the 10K.

Speaker 5 (18:54):
Yes, that one was.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
Yeah, it's the only time it was cold.
Florida, cold, like probably inthe 40s, it was windy and it
was raining.
Florida, cold, like probably inthe 40s, it was windy and it
was raining.
And it is the only time Iremember being on a Disney
course thinking if that bus washere right now I'd hop on it

(19:16):
because I was miserable.
But the rain stopped, I didn'tget on the bus and I continued,
but I think that's the worst Iremember.
I do remember the hot ones.
You remember we had two hotones in a row, 20.
And then I think we missed 21,I think.
And then 22 was hot, also forthe marathon.

(19:37):
But again, it's Florida andwhere you're used to training
and there was other times themarathon I'm going to say 23,
where the sky opened up.
Was that 23 or 24?
It might have been 24.

Speaker 5 (19:49):
24.
24, yeah.

Speaker 3 (19:51):
Yeah, I was one of the only people.
I think the chance ofprecipitation was like 17%.
I put a poncho in my pocketyeah, so that didn't go too
badly for me.
I was with Woody on that onealso.
Yeah, so that didn't go toobadly for me.
I was with Woody on that onealso.
I think the bottom line is thatthe weather there's not much
you can do about it.
There's no sense worrying aboutit.

(20:17):
You prep as well as you can andthen you just persevere, and I
think that's what all of you did, and I think that's what a lot
of our friends have done too.
Caution Runners.
The topic is about to changeright now.
We had a registration actuallytoday.
The day that we recordedSpringtime surprise registration

(20:41):
was today.
Friends, how did it go for you?

Speaker 5 (20:43):
That was the easiest registration I've ever had.
I had four windows open, I hadtwo devices, four windows and
three of the windows right awaywere at 21 or 23 minutes and
moved on very quickly.
They moved fast yeah.
Yeah, I was registered by 9.15my time so 10.15.

(21:06):
It.

Speaker 3 (21:07):
I moved fast, yeah, yeah, I was registered by nine
15, my time so 10 15.
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (21:13):
It was that quick.
Yeah.
Now, lexi, you said you didn'tregister today.
Right, I did not.
I am still planning on doingthe race.
Um, it's just a personaldecision right now.
But um, I logged on and um, Ihaven't checked in the past
couple of hours, but when I leftwork, the 10 miler and the
challenge were still open.

Speaker 3 (21:34):
Now, Greg, I know where you were.
You were with the party.

Speaker 6 (21:38):
Yes, I was in the party.
That was my first everregistration zoom and let me
tell you, it's hopping.
I, I love, I love that thereare just so many people within
our community that want to helpso many others and and for.
As much as we want to help eachother, it is hysterical, though,

(22:01):
at the same time, becauseeveryone's got their mics
unmuted and they're likespitting out oh I have this much
time, I have this window, andthen someone is trying to like
vocally negotiate who's gonnatake what window, and then
trying to like parse all of thatout.
Is is absolutely hysterical.

(22:22):
Uh, so that was the experienceof the half, and I was so glad
to be a part of it.
Not that I needed to worry, though, for my personal
registration experience.
Like you, alicia, I had acouple of windows open, but I
felt like I was probably theonly person, though in the Zoom
today that every single one ofmy windows was greater than an

(22:48):
hour, and it stayed that way fora substantial amount of time.
Like my first window probablydidn't start clicking down, I
would say at least 30 minutesafter registration being opened,
but thankfully my littleguardian angel, alicia, over
here, she's like oh, I got one, that's four minutes.

(23:09):
So I was like I'll gladly takethat one.
Even in the grand scheme ofthings, I really didn't need it
because I will.
I only registered for just the10 miler.
I wish John was here right nowbecause, and unfortunately, he
lost power to his house.
So hence why, uh, john onlysaid five words so far in this
episode.
But, um, you know, he had areally funny story about having

(23:31):
a very stress-free registrationbecause I think he's going to be
like me and just doing the 10miler as well and he registered
at 6 pm eastern.
Uh, on registration day, he hadno waiting room whatsoever.
But the one story, though, I didwant to share and, bob, I'd be
interested to get yourperspective on it in the middle
of registration, after I wasdone, I got a text from our

(23:55):
favorite stunt woman, extraordinary Taryn, and she is
on a family vacation right nowover in Europe and she's like do
you have any links available?
I'm in buckingham palace, yes,she was, and I have terrible
cell service.
And the moment I got that textmessage, bob, you were saying to

(24:17):
the entire zoom, I have a fiveminute link.
I have a five minute link.
And no one was addressing youwhatsoever.
So then I like chimed in and belike hey, bob, you still have
that link, send it to Taryn.

Speaker 3 (24:30):
Which I did, and she got it, and she got registered
right away.
Yeah, I, yeah, I actually itsounds funny to say registration
days.
I have become fun.
I look forward to them.

Speaker 5 (24:44):
So I've had a couple of people text or message me
today saying they'reanticipating what I ended up
signing up for and, as of rightnow, I only signed up for the 10
miler.
I decided to not do the 10k andthe yoga as of right now, but I
have a feeling that the 10kmight open up again possibly,

(25:07):
and yoga is still open if Iwanted to do it.
Um, so, right now, that's whatI have.
It could change yeah, you'realmost certainly correct.

Speaker 6 (25:15):
Well, yesterday I was looking at ryan's stats of of
the historical stats ofspringtime surprise
registrations and al.
When at least it comes to yoga,I don't think you'll have any
issues there, because I thinklast year the yoga didn't sell
out at all.

Speaker 5 (25:32):
I don't think it ever does so so I think you'll be
fine there.

Speaker 6 (25:35):
I did notice because you know I'm signed up for Matt
Marcella's team.
Run Diz Twitter alerts.
And over the course of theafternoon I was getting
notifications that the 5k wasopening periodically, but
nothing for the 10k.
So you'll have to keep youreyes peeled for that one.
But in terms of the sellouttimes, real quick again.

(25:57):
As we alluded to earlier, weonly had two sellouts today.
As I made the the joke in thethe zoom today uh, hashtag, do
it for poo, uh the uh.
The 10k sold out in 56 minutesand then the 5k sold out in 65
yeah, you know, I'm like adaggum, 12 year old.

Speaker 3 (26:21):
Every time somebody would say something about poo,
I'd start to giggle oh, I'm init for poo, I'm running because
of poo.
All right, grow up, mister.

Speaker 5 (26:37):
I did decide that the reason I only signed up for the
10 miler was I thought tomyself well, if there's really
good merch for the 10k, I couldjust buy the shirt and earn it
later.
And I'm waiting to see ifDisneyland and Wine and Dine
have merch for the yoga, becausethat's why I really wanted to

(26:57):
do the yoga.

Speaker 6 (26:58):
Um, so if they have merch, then I would sign up for
the yoga when you sign up forthe yoga, when you sign up for
the yoga, obviously, at theactual event itself, you get,
like you know, the mat.
Right, but don't they have atleast, like you know, it might
not be a texture per se, butdon't they have at least a
cotton t-shirt at the expo?
No, okay.

Speaker 5 (27:18):
I don't.
Well, they might that you canbuy that's what I'm waiting to
see, but you don't get a shirtwith the registration yeah um
right, so yeah I don't.

Speaker 3 (27:29):
I don't recall seeing yoga merch at the expo.
I don't look for it, but Idon't recall seeing it.
Is it there?

Speaker 5 (27:36):
I don't recall seeing it either, but somebody told me
that they thought they saw itat disneyland.

Speaker 6 (27:41):
so okay, I'm waiting to see if, coming up in a couple
weeks when Halloween happens,if they have merch, well, I'm
sure people are really going towant Disneyland yoga merch, at
least for January, Because thatrace is themed to Miss Piggy and
I know there's a lot of peoplethat signed up for the yoga just

(28:03):
because it's Miss Piggy.
So hopefully Disneyland decidesto to do some merch for that,
but we'll have to wait and see.

Speaker 5 (28:10):
Or run Disney.
If you're listening, maybeinclude that in the yoga and
you'll get more people to do it.

Speaker 3 (28:17):
So see, saying you signed up for Miss Piggy Isn't
as funny as saying you signed upfor poo.

Speaker 6 (28:20):
You did it for poo.
You signed up for poo For pooyou did it for poo yeah.
Caution runners.
Change of topic ahead.

Speaker 3 (28:28):
Now you may not instantly recognize the name of
our guest this week, but you'veseen her on nearly every Disney
World race weekend.
Our friend Jody Chase provides,on course, entertainment for us
, and we're always happy to seeher, not only because she's a

(28:48):
delightful person, but becauseshe's usually stationed near the
end of the race.
So we're really happy to seeher.
But look, there's a whole lotmore to talk about and we'll get
to all of it.
But first, jody, welcome to theRise and Run podcast.

Speaker 10 (29:06):
Thank you, bob, it's a pleasure to be here.

Speaker 3 (29:09):
And that was a great intro.
Well, thanks, I know I surelook forward to it.
Oh boy, well, first I do, Ilook forward.
You're coming up that hill andyou're halfway up.
That's always good.
I get a chance to stop and sayhello and rest on the side of
the hill, so that's fun.
And you're there with uh,you're there with angie, yeah,
and you're there as a couple oftailgating characters, right?

Speaker 10 (29:32):
yes, two tailgating characters.
We started that.
I don't even know when it was.
They've been putting me on thetop of a hill in various forms.
Oh yeah, I'm always at the topof a hill.
I'm always up there.
I don't know why, because I'mlike we want to make enemies.

Speaker 3 (29:47):
It's a reward, I guess.
So, yeah, it's a reward.
Get to the top of the hill, youget to say hi to Jodi, that's
right, yeah.

Speaker 10 (29:56):
Honestly, when they put Angie and I together, we
were trying to figure out likeour shtick.
Like what are we going to do?
Um, you know, we're notcharacters that people know, and
so we started like realizingthat we're on this hill and
people are like who are thesewomen?
Why are they so annoying?

(30:16):
So we played so we went with it, we just went with it we're
like, we're trying to be asannoying as possible so that you
will not want to stop and havea photo opportunity with us
Doesn't work.
Why would you want to?
Some people do.
Most of the time it's just theywant to run faster.
So we try to do things to makepeople laugh in little sound
bites.

(30:36):
But then I heard that you couldhear us like a mile away.

Speaker 3 (30:39):
You can hear quite a distance.
Yeah, I'm like I'm sorry forsaying the same jokes over and
over.
In fact, Alicia's got a storyabout hearing you from a
distance.

Speaker 5 (30:49):
I do, jodi.
So during the marathon thislast year, um, I knew that Bob
was just a little bit ahead ofme.
My mom had texted me and saidBob's right near you, and then I
heard your voice say Bob fromthe Rise Around podcast, and so
I I sprinted a little bit so Icould catch up with him and be
with him for a little bit.

Speaker 10 (31:08):
So yeah, I heard your voice, the foghorn, like
let everybody know, hey, she'sup, she's there.

Speaker 3 (31:15):
You don't have to sprint much to catch up with me.
Anymore, not anymore.

Speaker 5 (31:19):
You still have long legs, Bob.

Speaker 3 (31:21):
And I was pushing.
You were pushing, woody, wow,and I was pushing, you were
pushing, I was pushing thewheelchair at that time.

Speaker 10 (31:26):
I think, jodi, that's yeah, I remember yes.

Speaker 3 (31:28):
I do remember some things you do.

Speaker 10 (31:32):
Even that early in the morning.

Speaker 3 (31:34):
Pushing up the hill is hard.
How early do you have to getthere?

Speaker 10 (31:39):
Usually we have to get there before the roads close
, not as early as John Pelkey, but I usually get there about, I
think, around 3 or 3.30.
And yeah, and sometimes I canhear John's voice and I'm like,
oh, I haven't seen him in likefour or five days because you
know, he gets put up at a luxuryhotel and I'm at home and I

(31:59):
have to, you know, drive in toDisney and live about 35 minutes
away.

Speaker 3 (32:07):
Friends, if you haven't figured it out and I
mentioned it last week, jodi isJohn's wife.

Speaker 10 (32:12):
Yes, john Pelkey, yes, he is my beloved.
He puts up with me.

Speaker 3 (32:19):
That's her ticket to sainthood, I think.

Speaker 6 (32:22):
While we're at it, to elicit the phraseology of your
husband.
So here's the thing how did thetwo of you meet?

Speaker 10 (32:34):
ah, that's a very that's.
That's a fun story.
Uh, when I moved down here in95 1995 that's yeah, shows you
how old I am uh, I met john yeahright at the horror makeup show
at universal studios, yeah, andhe was performing there.
He had been there for aboutfive years at that point, and so

(32:55):
I was uh, I got cast, uh, and Isat in the audience and watched
his show and, I won't lie, Iwas a little smitten by him.
I was like he's funny.

Speaker 6 (33:07):
Yeah, good looking, I'm like cute was that, with or
without the makeup on?

Speaker 10 (33:14):
there's no makeup in that show, we're just.
Have you ever seen the show?

Speaker 3 (33:18):
I have not, no, I have, but it's.
It was long, it's been recently, it's a very funny show it's a
good show yeah, really I love it.

Speaker 9 (33:25):
It's one of my favorites isn't it great?

Speaker 10 (33:27):
I love, I love it too, so it's really great for an
actor, uh oh yeah yeah, becauseit's got a makeup artist and a
host and uh, and it's just avery silly, funny show.
We no longer do the show, butum, but we really enjoy the fact
that that's where we met and itwas um and we had great shows
together.
So we knew I was like, hmm, kind of grooving on his babosity

(33:50):
.
So he definitely liked me tooand he'll tell you that story.

Speaker 3 (33:56):
But he'll hear.
He'll hear that story.

Speaker 10 (33:58):
That's his story.
He'll he'll hear babosity again.

Speaker 3 (34:00):
I probably, and probably not just for me.
He'll hear Babosity again, Ipromise, and probably not just
for me.
That'll get picked up, I think.
So listen, I mean the side ofthe hill.
We've talked about that.
You talked a little bit aboutmaybe some Universal.
What else do you do aroundDisney in the entertainment
realm?

Speaker 10 (34:18):
Oh yeah, Well, I can talk about shows that I have
done that are no longer there.
And I'll do that.
I was in a show called thecitizens of Hollywood.

Speaker 8 (34:29):
Yes.

Speaker 10 (34:30):
Studios for 20 years Now, prior to that, the first
show I ever did at Disney, whichis no longer there.
I'm really good at shuttingdown shows.
There's two shows, other shows,no three actually, nope, yeah.

Speaker 4 (34:46):
Or four?
Stop right there.
Do we want her on the podcast?
This might shut us down 201 anddone.

Speaker 10 (34:55):
You may want to rethink this First show I did.
I'll go real quick.
Anacomical Players.

Speaker 4 (35:04):
It was like an improv sketch comedy show at the
Wonders of Life Pavilion atEpcot.
Oh, oh, yes, that's going back.

Speaker 3 (35:08):
I don't remember I got to be honest, I don't
remember it.
Oh no, I don't remember thatone?

Speaker 10 (35:11):
No, it was there for a long time.
Oh, I believe it yeah A lot ofpeople from the Adventurers Club
performed at it and ComedyWarehouse, and same time I did a
show called Laugh 911, whichwas line amusement for fun this
is before your fast passes, lightning lanes and all that
stuff.
So people were in line a longtime.

(35:32):
So we would go out in thisvehicle and we would perform for
people that were standing inthe lines, just making them
laugh and squirting them withwater, because when it was cut
out just being silly with loudmusic and stuff like that.
And then at the same time I didthe World Showcase Players as
well, which was at.
Epcot, yeah, and I did Romeoand Edna, I did a oh gosh.

(35:57):
There was a French show, toothat I am spacing right now, and
I did the Holy Grail, the Grailshow.
That was in England.
Loved, loved, loved in England, loved, loved, loved the UK,
loved, loved the.

Speaker 3 (36:08):
UK.
Was that a Monty Python tribute?

Speaker 10 (36:11):
It was yes.

Speaker 3 (36:14):
Oh, okay, yes.

Speaker 10 (36:15):
It was so long ago.
I'm like wait a minute, whatwas it about?
Yes, it was actually.
Yeah, yeah, loosely based onthat, and it was a it's what we
call a trunk show.
So it's kind of like aRenaissance feel, if you will.
If you know, renaissancetheater Sorry.

Speaker 3 (36:32):
I missed it.

Speaker 10 (36:33):
Yeah, it was really good show.
That was there for a long timetoo.
I think that was for 25 yearsor so, and then it was canceled
in, I think, 2016,.
Maybe I can't remember.
Yeah, yeah, in, uh, I think2016, maybe I can't remember.
Um, yeah, yeah, but I didcitizens of hollywood for, uh,
20 years.

Speaker 3 (36:49):
Um, my character that I remember, yeah, page turner
was my character.

Speaker 10 (36:53):
I love doing that as well and I was at I did indiana
jones epic stunt spectacular,cool.
Um, I do not do that anymore.
And I am friends with if you goto a chilly place known as
Arendelle, I am friends with astoryteller there.

Speaker 3 (37:15):
Okay.

Speaker 10 (37:15):
So if you ever see that One of my favorite things
that I still hopefully dobecause I just re-auditioned for
it we have to re-audition forthings Is an Italian storyteller
for the holidays, I've heardthat you do.
Yeah, well, I'm friends withher, you know, she's.

Speaker 3 (37:35):
Yeah, I've heard about that.

Speaker 10 (37:36):
The good witch.
She's a good witch.
Yeah, she's lovely, really neat.

Speaker 3 (37:41):
Yes, very much enjoy her.
I really wondered, and maybeyou can tell me.
I really wondered, where Disneyfound an old Italian woman who
could tell such a spellbindingstory.

Speaker 10 (37:58):
She lives inside my heart.
I had my photo taken with herDid you.

Speaker 3 (38:03):
Yes, I did.
Yeah, I didn't realize it atthe time.

Speaker 10 (38:09):
She looked a little different 100% fooled, had no
idea.

Speaker 3 (38:17):
No idea, that is good I like that.
That is good.

Speaker 10 (38:21):
That's a tribute to you really, oh thank you, or to
your friend, I'm sorry, yes mydear.

Speaker 3 (38:24):
That's a tribute to you really.
Oh, thank you.
Or to your friend, I'm sorry.

Speaker 10 (38:25):
Yes, my dear friend La Befana.

Speaker 3 (38:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 10 (38:27):
Yes, la Befana, la Befana.
No, it is kind of neat.

Speaker 3 (38:31):
That is kind of neat thing they do at Epcot at
Christmas time.
I know they do.
I know Père Noël is in France.
I know there is a Jewishstoryteller.
Yes, the L'Chaim food stand isthere.
Yes, and that's pretty neat, and are there?

Speaker 10 (38:49):
others?
I'm not sure.
Oh yeah, there are.
I love every single story.
There's Norway, that's with thebarn Santa.
Then there is Japan.
So good, I love the Japan one.
There was a sponsor.
Oh, yes, yep, yep, so good, Ilove the Japan one Father
Christmas oh yes, yep, no longer, no longer.

(39:11):
Who else?
Oh gosh, there used to be, along time ago, the three kings
long time ago, yeah yeah, I'mkicking it old school here, so I
think I'm forgetting someone.
Pierre Noel and FatherChristmas.

Speaker 6 (39:28):
Santa, of course.

Speaker 10 (39:29):
Yes, of course Santa , Of course Santa.
Yes, we love.
Yeah, they do a great job.
Yeah, the Santa does a greatjob.

Speaker 3 (39:37):
There you go I think that's it.

Speaker 10 (39:39):
I think that I've hit them all.

Speaker 3 (39:41):
But great time of year to be there, just so many
neat things going on and thoselittle, those little activities
are a lot of fun.
I love being involved in it.

Speaker 10 (39:50):
Yes, hey, how'd you get involved with run Disney?
Oh gosh, yes, I.
So I've been performing.
You know for so long at Disneythat they have special events
right, disney, that they havespecial events right.
So when the special eventshappen, they cast people in
various roles, as you know, toentertain people as you run past

(40:13):
, and that is really whathappened.
I just I was cast.
I don't even remember what myfirst role was, probably just a
crazy, you know, tacky touristor something, or, or yeah, I
think that's it.
And so because I I got chosento do it, um, I just um,
sometimes, uh, when you are castin a role and they appreciate

(40:37):
your work, um, it makes it easyon them, and so they cast you
again and they've got the andit's usually about the costume
Does she fit in the costume.

Speaker 4 (40:46):
Boom put her in, you know.

Speaker 10 (40:51):
Yeah, so that and that's really how it was it was
there's.
No, yeah, I've just been doingit for so long, but really as of
late probably the last you knowoutside of COVID, you know
before that, probably the lasteight years or so I've just been
continually doing it and thenthese characters that Angie and

(41:11):
I created kind of stuck and it'sjust been going really well.

Speaker 3 (41:16):
It really is fun.

Speaker 10 (41:18):
Yeah, I love doing it.

Speaker 3 (41:20):
I love encouraging people.

Speaker 10 (41:21):
And you know, because I do race announcing
outside, I fell into that.
I don't know, because I do raceannouncing outside, I fell into
that, I don't know if you wantthat story.

Speaker 3 (41:28):
Yes, what others do you do?
We'll share a story here in aminute.
Our friends know about the July4th swim-a-thon in St
Petersburg.
My goodness.
But I might as well talk aboutit now for just a moment.
You were there, Jodi.
You and John were the raceannouncers, and it was your

(41:48):
birthday.

Speaker 10 (41:49):
It was my birthday, yep, that was the Pier Run, st
Pete Pier Run.
And then we do St Pete Run Festtogether in November.
Why didn't?

Speaker 3 (41:59):
I I frequently run that.

Speaker 10 (42:01):
Oh, love doing that one.
That's really.
That's just so much fun.
It's it's really my favoriterace.

Speaker 3 (42:07):
It's a great event.
Yeah, Really kind of excellent.
You do anything else aroundhere or in the uh or anywhere,
really.

Speaker 10 (42:15):
The way that it fell in my lap is that, um, you know
, I don't know if you knowChristian, but Christian is a DJ
for Run Disney.

Speaker 6 (42:23):
Oh, DJ CJ.

Speaker 10 (42:24):
So he has his own company and he needed an
announcer for Thanksgiving Day,thanksgiving morning in Daytona,
and John couldn't do it and itwas I can't remember.
I think it was 2021 or 2020, Ithink I can't remember.
I think it was 2020, actuallyThanksgiving.

(42:44):
But you know, you never knowbecause of the COVID stuff I was
like-.

Speaker 3 (42:48):
Yeah right, we were coming out by Thanksgiving 20,
so it could have been.

Speaker 10 (42:51):
Yeah, yeah.
So yeah, john couldn't do itand he goes well, do you know
anyone that could?
And he looked at me and I gojust say yes, I'll do it, I'll
figure it out, I'll figure outhow to do it.
And I did.
He just gave me the music todownload and I just played it
and hand me a microphone and I'mlike all right.
And John kind of prepped me onthings to say and like what not

(43:12):
to say and how to kind of trackevery you know, like when people
are running, like what you know, what's not good to say or you
know, and I just kind of made itmy own and they liked it.
So they, let's do another race, let's do another, another race.
And I do a lot of all womenraces, like I just did the um
triathlon, babes athletics Idon't know if you know, babe,

(43:32):
babes athletics, but it's allwomen.
And that was at fort de soto, Ijust did that june near me.
So good, that was really reallyfun.
I had a great time.
This was a triathlon, you know, yeah, okay, biking and swimming
and, yeah, running.
I'm like this is crazy greatplace for it really beautiful.

(43:53):
it was a beautiful morning, itreally was.
So, yeah, that's.
Yeah, so I do.
I do races, you know, uh,whenever people need me, but
most of the time it's with john, like lakeland, we one, um, and
then I get like track, track, used me for, um, their, their
women, the all women run.
So yeah, I mean that's it.

(44:16):
I kinda I kinda like it, like Ikinda got addicted to it.
These, this encouraging peopleto uh, to feel good about
themselves and to run, and I'mreally I guess I'm an empathetic
person, so I'm always like, yeah, you can do it.
I love this.

Speaker 9 (44:31):
I'm not doing it.
I'm not doing it, but good foryou.

Speaker 5 (44:36):
All right, jodi, so we love seeing you out on the
course.
Do you have a favorite runDisney memory that you've had
before?

Speaker 10 (44:43):
Oh, my goodness, I loved when I hated it for the
runners, but it was when I can'tremember what race it was.
You guys might be able to helpme.
It was torrential downpour.
I think it was springtime, surprise but I'm not sure.

Speaker 3 (45:05):
See, here's the funny thing it depends on where you
are on the course, because ofthe way the rain in Florida is
so localized.
True, true, the last heavy rainI remember was the Marathon
2024.

Speaker 10 (45:22):
I think maybe it was that then.
I don't remember it being cold, but the rain was so bad and, and
, of course, guess where?
We were?
On a hill, on a hill, okay, sowe're on a hill and I was.
That was I think it was myfirst time yes, it was my first
race with Angie and we werestanding under a tent and it's
got so bad that the rain wassideways.

(45:42):
The rain was sideways andusually when it's sideways rain,
we got to go in.
There's no ifs, ands or butsabout it, but we felt so bad and
we parked the RV so that the RVthat we were in because that's
where we break we don't breakactually, but yeah, that's where
we are.
So the front of it was prettymuch right on the course, so we

(46:05):
could see everybody running upthe hill and we had our
microphones in the course, so wecould see everybody running up
the hill and we had ourmicrophones in the RV.
We're hanging out the RV and wewere just yelling at people as
they're running by.
We know it's terrible, but we'redoing, you know, just just
being silly and making, hopefully, people laugh in those
little moments where they werejust like this is the worst
thing ever and hopefully, ifthey just hear that one silly

(46:27):
thing, it'll just kind of takethem out of you know, out of the
moment.
It helps.
Yeah, I hope so.
I hope so.
That's one of my favoritememories is just, we didn't stop
because nobody else did youknow, and we're like we just
kept going and I think that wasone of the deciding factors.
I think that's why they broughtus back again, because we were

(46:53):
like, nope, we're not going inthe, because we could have
easily just sat and waited forthe rain to dissipate, not to
toot my own horn, but I wasreally proud of us for doing
something like that, because Ilike it.

Speaker 3 (46:58):
That's what you guys are there for right.
I like it.
Yep, that's a good one.

Speaker 10 (47:02):
Running my mouth.

Speaker 6 (47:08):
You guys are running up the hill.
Jodi, I want to follow up onsomething that you mentioned a
little before.
I think I got the vibe thatmaybe you're not supposed to do
this, but that you stay outthere for a decent amount of
time and aren't taking manybreaks, and that is such a feat
and such an accomplishment.
Talk about and maybe this isn'tthe right word, but it's the

(47:30):
word I'm going to use anyway, since we're a running podcast
Talk about the stamina that youneed as an actor to be able to
perform improv for that long, because obviously you are out
there for hours at a time and tojust randomly think of things
off the top of your head, I'msure is probably no easy feat oh

(47:52):
, feet, get it, because you'reright, yeah yeah, see, that's
what I do like.

Speaker 10 (47:56):
So you, I see something and then I just
whatever comes out of my face.
I just say it.
Sometimes I probably shouldn't,but, um, I've been working at
Disney for so long that I kindof have a sensor in my head that
I go oh, don't say that.

Speaker 4 (48:12):
Stop it right now.

Speaker 10 (48:13):
Most of the time it's just observational humor
and really honestly, just fromdoing it for so long, it's like
anything Like if someone tellsme they're really good at it.
I don't know anything about itwork, but if you have the
stamina to do it, as long as youyou have, you get good at it
and you're and you're confidentright.

(48:34):
So it's all about confidence, and so I feel pretty confident
when someone hands me amicrophone and says, okay,
here's, here's a little bit ofinfo, this is what you're going
to do and go for it, and so andI trust the person that I'm with
very, very much yeah.

Speaker 3 (48:52):
That's cool.

Speaker 10 (48:53):
Yeah, if I was out there by myself for five hours I
don't know if I could do thatbecause, but being with someone
else that I trust and like Iknow that she'll pick up when
I'm tired, you can just, we justfeel each other and yeah,
that's the way it usually worksfor me is being with someone

(49:13):
else.
If I'm by myself it's a littleharder, but I'll come up with
bits to do, so it kind of takesthe pressure off of me.
Like you know, if someone cameup to me like they're running by
me, I'll probably interviewthem, so that just ask them
questions and I know they'rerunning, but at least it takes,
gives me a break to go.
Ok, I'm going to breathe, butluckily having a partner out

(49:37):
there helps that a lot and we do.
We do get punchy, we get reallypunchy Sometimes.
I remember one time.
I remember one time Angie, angie was, we were both so tired
it was right before the balloon, ladies like probably like 20
minutes.
So you know, we've been talkingfor four hours and someone ran

(50:01):
by and and they were dressedlike Pete's dragon, which is one
of my favorite Disney animatedwell, kind of animated films.
It's one of my favorite Disneyfilms.
And so she goes.
There's Pete the dragon.
And for some reason I lost mymind.
I was laughing.
Did you just say Pete thedragon?

(50:22):
That was Pete the dragon.
She's like yep.
It was just that moment wherewe just both knew that that
wasn't correct.
But it was because we were sotired and we were just
ridiculous and we were justlaughing.
And then it got people laughingrunning by because they knew
that, you know, we were justbeing silly.

Speaker 3 (50:41):
Pete the dragon.
I think he's related to Jimmythe cricket.
Jimmy the cricket.

Speaker 10 (50:46):
Jimmy the cricket, jimmy the cricket, yes, yeah,
that's pretty much it.
Yeah, so, yeah, it's just.
Yeah.
You just just, you know theI've been doing it for so long,
basically, and you just kind ofkind of know, in observational
humor, I think is is reallyimportant when people are
running uphill, going my feetare killing me, call, call it

(51:12):
out.
You know, call attention to it.
Who cares?
At that point You're likewhatever.
We know you're tired, we knowyour muscles hurt.
I want you to know that I care,I care about you.
Mickey's not going to tell youthat I mean, mickey's great, but
he doesn't say much at all.

Speaker 9 (51:29):
So, jodi, I'm an actor too, yay.
So I over here nodding becauseI understand, I'm like oh yeah,
absolutely.
Whenever you do it a lot, totally.
There's not a stamina, it'sjust, it just comes to you.

Speaker 10 (51:43):
Second nature right.

Speaker 9 (51:44):
Yeah, but I do have a question for you.
Do you prefer scripted orimprov?

Speaker 10 (51:52):
Oh, I like a combo.
I like a combo of both.
Um, it depends on the improv.
You know.
If, like, if it's long form, improv is what they call like,
just you know a whole scene andgoing on and on.
I can do that, but I prefer, umhaving a uh skeleton, if you

(52:12):
will, of a script and then goingoff on my own and and hopefully
have a director that trusts meto do that.
That, I think, is my strongsuit.
Like, I have a rehearsaltomorrow for um, I don't know if
I can say this Uh, I have a umfun thing that I'm doing for
Halloween, that um, yeah, it'sjust, it's uh, I'm 80.

(52:41):
I'm doing a little pirate uhthing tomorrow, um, and I'm
rehearsing it and I'm going inblind.
I have a character that a name.
I've got a little bit of, uh,what we call a calling card like
.
It's just like little bitsabout myself as my character,
but I don't know anything elseand we're just gonna go in,
we're gonna rehearse togetherand hopefully create organically

(53:04):
some things.
But but your question is do Ilike one or the other?
I like a combo of both.
I love both separately, but Ilike the combo.

Speaker 9 (53:13):
And as a follow-up question do you do any shows or
anything outside of Disney forfun, Because I know Pelkey has
talked about being in shows?

Speaker 10 (53:25):
John Pelkey is a fast fan.

Speaker 4 (53:28):
He is a thespian thespian extraordinary.

Speaker 10 (53:31):
Um, he me too.
Yeah, oh, I love theater.
I don't, you know, that's how.
I was a theater major.
I went to college in newhampshire and I was a theater
major there and I minored inbusiness.

Speaker 9 (53:43):
So to answer my degrees in accounting and I my
minor's in theater and do youjust act or do you do your
accounting stuff?
I, I do, I do accounting andthen, um, in my spare time, I do
theater.
I've directed a little bit at achildren's theater, so a little
bit of both, and that's how Istarted.

Speaker 10 (54:01):
I started out in children's theater, um.
I worked with an actor namedChris Parnell.
I don't know if you know Chris.

Speaker 9 (54:08):
He was on.

Speaker 4 (54:09):
Five Night Live.
Yeah.

Speaker 10 (54:11):
I know the name 30 Rock and Anchorman, anyway, I
don't remember.
I don't know.
There's some animated stuffthat he does too, but anyway I
did an improv group with himdoing children's theater, and
that was my first reallyintroduction to improv and it
was with him, children's theater, and that's, that was my first,
uh, really introduction toimprov and it was with him, you
know, and he's pretty good, he'spretty good Cool.

(54:32):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So, um yeah, and I can'tremember what your question was.
I apologize.

Speaker 9 (54:37):
Do you have a favorite or do you do um shows
outside of I do.

Speaker 10 (54:44):
I have done a bunch of theater when I moved here.
But I how do I say this withoutsounding like a jerk, I'm just
gonna say it.
I like making money, sure, yeah, and there's no, you don't in
theater, you really don't.
And but I but I get my fillcreating characters and, um,
like I did commercial work and Idid some film work, I find my

(55:10):
artistic necessity to do the art, if you will, I find it in
other things like voiceovers andthings like that, but to do
theater I've kind of just fallenout of it because I've made a
career of what I get paid to doand I don't feel I'm not really

(55:37):
proud of that.
But I've done enough theater.
I feel pretty good about it.

Speaker 3 (55:42):
I feel, okay, you're happy, that's the big deal, yeah
yeah, and some people lovedoing theater, so why would I
good about?

Speaker 10 (55:45):
it.
You know, I feel okay, you'rehappy, that's the big deal.
Yeah, yeah, and and and people, some people love doing theater.
So why would I?
You know, if people have askedme, why don't you do theater?
And even directors in townthey're like why have you not
auditioned for me?
So I'm like probably should not, that I'm like this commodity
that someone wants to cast.
But, um, yeah, I fringefestival.

(56:05):
You know the fringe festivalthere's orlando fringe festival.
I've done a bunch of showsthere.
I've directed, I have directedshows, um, and I enjoy all of it
.
Uh, but I I'm at an age whereI'm like I really want to retire
at a reasonable, you know age.
So yeah yeah, so that I know Idon't know if that's lame or not
yeah, john's the theater.

(56:27):
John's a thespian.
If he could just do theater.
Honestly, sports and theater,that's it.

Speaker 9 (56:34):
That's what he would like.

Speaker 3 (56:36):
Good combo.

Speaker 9 (56:37):
Yeah, I relate so much because I mean, it's one of
those things I love theater.
It's in my blood.
But I have to pay bills.

Speaker 10 (56:44):
Yeah, and fortunately, I wish the arts
were more supported.

Speaker 9 (56:47):
So we could go on a tangent about.

Speaker 10 (56:51):
Oh yeah.

Speaker 4 (56:52):
Anyway you've been on the course a lot, but have you
ever run a run Disney event andis that something you plan on
doing in the future?

Speaker 10 (57:02):
I actually this is one of my favorite memories with
my mom I have run a 5K.
I ran a 5K with my mom and Ican't remember the year I think
it was 2014, I want to say and Iran a nonprofit pet rescue for
many years and we dressed up.

(57:23):
I still have the costumes.
We dressed up with tutus and mymom had them made and we have
the name of my rescue on it aBetter Life Pet Rescue, and on
the back it was like adopt a petor something like that.
And we dressed up in likelittle kind of Tinkerbelly
looking costumes and we walkedin.

(57:43):
Now, mind you, my mom is a very, very funny woman.
She's very gregarious, she'snot shy, she'll talk to anybody
and she loves her son-in-law.
But she didn't really know whathe did.
She's like, oh, he announces arace.
That's nice.
And I said, mom, we're going todo the 5K.

(58:04):
She's like great, we walk inand of course you know what it's
.
We're gonna do the 5k.
She's like great, we walk inand of course you know what it's
like, especially at the 5k,there's thousands and thousands
of people and John's on thestage, like my mother-in-law's
here, and he goes.
She's like, oh, my goodness, she's like center of attention.
She loved it.
It was so great and we ran the5k together and I think she was

(58:24):
72 at the time and she's ingreat shape.
She teaches water aerobics ather 55 plus community, so she's
in better shape than I am.
So we ran the 5k together and,no, do I plan on running another
one?
Probably not.
It was a lot of fun.
I really loved it.
Um, I don't know.

(58:44):
I can't say no.
I can't say not, that I'llnever do it, but I might.
John's training now, yeah weknow.

Speaker 3 (58:53):
Yeah, say to you half .

Speaker 10 (58:54):
And it's kind of inspiring me to get in better
shape and start to focus on somaybe I will, maybe it'll push
me to do that, but right nowit's about him.

Speaker 3 (59:05):
I was going to say that, uh, we know somebody else
who said never say never Goodpoint.

Speaker 10 (59:14):
No, I probably will.
I probably will.
I don't, um, I don't alwaysfeel like, okay, here's
something that might, uh, helpyou understand.
When I performed on the streets, uh, outside in the sun, for 25
years, the shoes that I worewere not always great on

(59:37):
concrete and they have affectedmy knees.
Not that that's an excuse, butthey have made an impact on my
knees.
Um, so I'm, I think I'm anxiousto be honest with you about
running, because I'm afraid thatit might hurt my knees more.

Speaker 3 (59:53):
Um, yeah, I don't know there's a thing called run,
walk, run.
I know the Galloway method youshould look into it.

Speaker 10 (01:00:00):
I have done that, I have done it and it really
absolutely works.
It helps me a lot and you'reright, you're right, you're
right, I should, I should dothat.

Speaker 3 (01:00:09):
You don't?
Yeah, you know we're mostlyteasing.

Speaker 10 (01:00:12):
Oh, I don't care, no , no, you're motivating me.
I really should do it.
I really should.
I don't know, I don't thinkabout it.
I like swimming.
I have a pool and I swim.

Speaker 3 (01:00:21):
That's awesome.

Speaker 10 (01:00:22):
Low impact on my knees.

Speaker 3 (01:00:24):
Oh, that's great, that's great exercise.

Speaker 10 (01:00:25):
Absolutely.
I love it so much.

Speaker 9 (01:00:28):
So you just mentioned it.
There's a side of you that someof the friends might not know
much about, but you have a petrescue or you own a pet rescue.

Speaker 10 (01:00:41):
Okay, so, yeah, so back in 2004, thank you for
asking me, because it is apassion.
So back in 2004, I kept findingdogs and cats and I was like,
what am I going to do about this?
So I started a nonprofit petrescue called A Better Life Pet
Rescue.
And that was hard back thenbecause we had no social media.

(01:01:02):
All we had was emailing to tryto find homes for dogs and cats.
And I'm really big on spayingand neutering and saving from
shelters.
And we were pulling animalsfrom shelters that were going to
be euthanized and then a lot ofthese animals needed some
rehabilitation.
So I would work with trainersand things like that.
And it just started to.

(01:01:24):
And Disney has a great programcalled the Ears to you program.
It's a volunteers, volunteerswith E-A-R-S.
It's a really wonderful programthat cast members can donate
their time and they sponsor, andthey sponsor um.

(01:01:50):
Oh, not sponsors, not the word, but um.
They can donate money throughDisney to whatever nonprofit
that they decide.
That's on their list and ourours was on their list.
Uh, we registered and so wewould get thousands of dollars
every year to um to save lives.
And we were a foster.
We are a foster based rescue,so that means that we don't have
a shelter or anywhere to keepthe animals other than people

(01:02:10):
that foster.
So I did that for about 20 yearsand I was so, and then I
started my real estate business.
So I'm a realtor now and soduring that time you know that
was a lot of work and I wastrying to focus on that.
It was that my pet rescue workwas kind of being neglected, and
I don't when I do something, Ilike to do it full, you know,

(01:02:33):
and I'll, uh, you know, fullsteam ahead.
So, uh, I handed it over tothree very capable women and
they have been running it, uh,for the last uh, about three
years.
So now, so it's still going.
They always say your legacylived on, you handed the torch
to us and it really truly is apassion of mine.

(01:02:55):
I still help them, I still aminvolved and I'm helping two
other rescues as well.
It's just something that's inmy heart that I can't stop and
it's such a need for it.
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (01:03:08):
So Scooby was from a foster-based rescue, yay.

Speaker 3 (01:03:13):
I love you.
I think that's wonderful.
There's a website friends cancheck out, isn't there, jodi?

Speaker 10 (01:03:19):
Yes, it's betterlifepetscom but the name
of the rescue is A Better LifePet Rescue, but
betterlifepetscom.
And they do great work inCentral Florida and beyond
really, because they've helpedanimals from other places as
well.
So really proud of them, reallyproud of them.
It's a lot of work and it canbe very discouraging and I just

(01:03:43):
got so burnt out doing itbecause it's so emotionally
involved.

Speaker 3 (01:03:46):
Yeah, I can understand that completely.

Speaker 10 (01:03:49):
But it's.

Speaker 3 (01:03:49):
But then on the other side it's like it's so
rewarding it's rewarding, it'sthe most beautiful thing when an
animal goes to a home andyou're like, yes, I did that.

Speaker 10 (01:04:01):
Yes, absolutely.
I wish I didn't have to put meout of business.

Speaker 3 (01:04:03):
I get it.
I get it, but thank you forasking.
It's a wonderful thing Friends.
Yeah, betterlifepetscom.
If you want to learn more aboutit or maybe even support the
cause a little bit, I'm surethere's a spot there where you
can do that and we'll put thatinformation in our show notes.
All right, jodi, thank you, let's see before we let you go

(01:04:32):
let's tackle a couple of rapidfire questions, okay pew pew pew
all right jody, are you readyfor the rapid fire?

Speaker 6 (01:04:36):
I'm ready here we go.
Yeah, all right, we're gonnastart you off with an easy one
here.
Favorite disney snack snack.

Speaker 10 (01:04:41):
Oh um, I don't know if it's a snack, but I love that
orange drink in France.
Oh yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:04:47):
Grand Marnier, is that a snack?
Oh yeah, listen.
Liquids and slushies count.
All right, perfect.

Speaker 10 (01:04:53):
The slushie.
That's it.
I love that one.
Oh yeah, that gets me introuble, so I can't.

Speaker 6 (01:04:57):

Speaker 10 (01:05:07):
which, which race?
Oh, um, I do love.
Um, well, I love the marathon,I love the whole, the whole
marathon.

that's fun for longer um yeah, Ilike the princess personally,

(01:05:30):

the people.
I love all the dresses and allthe people dressing up.
I don't know, I can't choose.
I love them all.
I love springtime surprise andI love, um, what's someone?

Speaker 4 (01:05:41):
the food wine and dine okay I'm like that, Okay.

Speaker 10 (01:05:44):
I'm like that's not.
I don't like that question.
Bye, Okay.

Speaker 3 (01:05:50):
Don't ask that one, greg.

Speaker 6 (01:05:51):
All right, all right, sounds good All right, this
one's maybe a little bit easier.
Favorite Walt Disney World park.

Speaker 10 (01:05:58):
Oh, that one is definitely Epcot.
Yeah, because that's where Istarted.

Speaker 5 (01:06:03):
Good answer.

Speaker 10 (01:06:07):
It's nostalgic for me.
I just love it.

Speaker 6 (01:06:09):
And you can get your slushie there.

Speaker 10 (01:06:11):
I can get my slushie , I like the food and wine
festival and I like the comfortsthey bring in.
I don't know Epcot's, justthat's where I started.
So I always say Epcot and Ilove the feel and the slow pace
of it, but I like the shade inanimal kingdom.
I I'm not gonna say that I lovemagic kingdom, but I love magic

(01:06:31):
kingdom for the nostalgia um,and I love hollywood studios so
very, very, very much thathollywood studios was my second
favorite.

Speaker 9 (01:06:38):
But I'm hearing a trend of not being able to make
a decision.

Speaker 6 (01:06:42):
Well, well, lexi, it's funny you say that because
I think our next question isgonna put us down the same path.
Jodi, your favorite raceannouncer not named John Pelkey.

Speaker 10 (01:06:53):
Oh, that is so I'll get it Carissa.

Speaker 9 (01:07:00):
Okay, oh, no, tracy Wu.

Speaker 10 (01:07:01):
She'll kill me if I don't say Tracy Wu, oh she.

Speaker 3 (01:07:05):
Tracy listens too.

Speaker 10 (01:07:07):
Jodiacy listens tracy woo is my favorite person.
Just I love her.

He was one of my groomsmen.
He's his child is my godchild.
What am I doing?
I love them all.
Stop it.
I don't like these questions.
Don't ask me if I like dogs orcats more.

(01:07:28):
Don't even do it.

Speaker 6 (01:07:28):
Don't even look, I won't, I promise.
I promise, since you knowcentral florida so well.
What is a hidden gem outside ofthe og gideons?

Speaker 10 (01:07:39):
uh, that everyone should check out okay, there is
a uh, a boat tour called thewinter park boat tour.
Tour I highly, highly recommendit.
It's like $15 and you get on aboat and you go through like old
, old Orlando and there's notourism, it's just Rollins
College, and you go through it.

(01:08:00):
Then you go to lunch in WinterPark on Park Avenue.
That's a fun little thing to do.
I also love going to BlueSprings and go kayaking Wekiva
Springs.
Those are some of my favoritenatural things to do, which I'm
really more into than I mean.
I love the theme parks don'tget me wrong, but that's where I
work, so I like to get awayfrom it and I think Orlando

(01:08:23):
offers a lot more than justtheme parks.
And those are the two thingsthat I would recommend.
Anyone who comes here just todo theme parks, I'd say break
away and see.
You know the springs, thenatural springs that we have,
and the manatee, and you knownature.
Yeah, that was easy that I got.

Speaker 6 (01:08:42):
Well now, going back to the theme parks you've at
Disney, you said for over 30years what is one thing that you
wish would come back to?
Walt Disney World?

Speaker 3 (01:08:53):
that is now gone the citizens of Hollywood yeah, I
think that's a good answer, verygood answer hashtag free Betty
Shambles and.

Speaker 10 (01:09:03):
Paige Turner and.
Star Cruiser.
I love it, and page turter andStar Cruiser I love Galactic
Star Cruiser.
It was the best.

Speaker 3 (01:09:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 10 (01:09:10):
Yeah, it was amazing .

Speaker 6 (01:09:12):
But if I had to, All right, and then last, and maybe
this might provide the sameanswer, but I think this is the
perfect last rapid fire questionthe favorite character you have
ever played.

Speaker 10 (01:09:25):
Oh, hmm, I would say , well, paige Turner, yeah,
because I played her for so longand I love doing Captain Keevan
on Galactic Star Cruiser.
But not everybody got to enjoyit.
So it was an incredible, incredible experience, an

(01:09:47):
immersive experience like noother, and I will defend it till
the cows come home.

Speaker 4 (01:09:53):
I bet it was neat, it was incredible.

Speaker 10 (01:09:55):
It was a really, really amazing experience.
That's a whole other showbecause there's so many great
things about it.
But Paige Turner for sure, because she was just.
You know, she was me.
I just get to be silly.
You know she was me.
I just get to be silly, youknow, for a living.

Speaker 3 (01:10:11):
I'm crazy, Jodi.
This was fun.

race, don't forget that there'sa meetup on Saturday at 2
o'clock in the afternoon.
It'll be at the picnic areawhich is just in front of.

(01:11:26):
I always want to call it MagicKingdom, but it's Disneyland.
You got two parks Disneylandand Disney California Adventure.
So if you're looking at theDisneyland Park, turn to your
left to about the 10 o'clockposition and there's a large
hedge area over there.
That's marked as the picnicarea.
It's near the Lost and Foundhedge area over there.

(01:11:46):
That's marked as the picnicarea.
It's near the lost and found, near the restrooms there, near
the rental lockers.
Great place for a meetup.
You usually have a pretty goodturnout there and I hear the
cookies are pretty good.

Speaker 6 (01:11:58):
I was like do we have confirmation?
Didn't Kelly make some?
Cookies that everyone wasraving about.

Speaker 3 (01:12:03):
Yeah, yep, and uh, um , he said he's going to do it
already, so we're good to gothere.
I'll have to.
Yeah, January is when I'll beout there.
In fact, I think none of us areout there until January and
we'll have to check them outwhen we get there.
But I know, alan, it will be.
A lot of our friends will bethere.

(01:12:23):
Alan and Grace look forward tothat.
I'm sure Russ will be.
That a lot of our friends willbe there.
Alan and Grace look forward tothat.
I'm sure Russ will be out there, and I'm going to stop naming
names, because I'm sure a lot ofour friends are going to be out
there and are going to enjoy it.

Speaker 6 (01:12:32):
Well, yeah, Bob, because the reason why none of
us are going to be there isbecause at least half of us are
going to be taking selfies withcamels in Burgenhand.

Speaker 3 (01:12:39):
Well, that's a fact.
Yeah, we'll be in Pennsylvania,so that'll be.
Yeah, I'm looking forward tothat.
That'd be a lot of fun.
That is the same weekend,though.

Remember our friend Pamela fromFluffy Fizzy's fame.

Speaker 6 (01:13:52):
I miss Pam.

Speaker 3 (01:13:53):
Yeah, I do too.
I've been chatting with her.
We've been friends for a whilenow.
Fluffy Fizzy's is still around.
Their website's still available, but Pam is working on a new
project and that's all I haveright now, and I'm not being
real secretive.

(01:14:13):
I don't know a whole lot.
I know a little bit more thanI'm letting on, but it's a new
project and we will have detailsto follow, so look forward to
that.

Speaker 5 (01:14:24):
We had Brittany Charbonneau on a few weeks ago
and we talked about her blog Ownyour Weird, and she has now
brought it back.
So if you'd like to check thatout, it's
thefunnyrunnersubstackcom andyou can sign up.
It's free, but yeah, it's a funlittle blog.
I love seeing what she comes upwith for that.

Speaker 3 (01:14:44):
It's Brittany through and through.

Speaker 5 (01:14:45):
Oh, absolutely.

Speaker 3 (01:14:47):
The last one tied into Shark Week.
She is what she calls herselfthe mountain shark.
When she runs or something, she's fun.
She's just a fun and funnyperson, hence the funny runner.
So own your weirdness.
Back On our Facebook page, there is now a Google form

(01:15:09):
asking you, my friends, if youwould be interested in playing
fantasy football with your Riseand Run friends this year.
This is entirely up to you.
Just an idea.
I thought.
I realize we've got a lot ofpeople out there.
Perhaps we got some friends whomight be interested in playing.
We can run a league thatthere's a buy-in.

(01:15:33):
We can run leagues that arefree just for bragging rights.
But here's the one thing I'mgoing to ask you have to draft a
kicker in the first round.

Speaker 6 (01:15:42):
No Okay, never mind in the first round.
No Okay, never mind.

Speaker 3 (01:15:47):
So look, if you're interested, fill that out.
The only thing I'm asking is Ido not want to be the
commissioner.
I will not be a commissioner.
I don't know if any of myfriends here want to be a
commissioner, that's up to you.
But we're going to needcommissioners for as many
leagues as we get, and we'll seehow we do.
We get 10.

(01:16:09):
To me, 10 team leagues areoptimal, uh, but we'll see how
it goes.
Okay.
So that form is out there.
We've got a couple weeks.
The season actually starts onseptember 4th.
So, with your nationalchampionship, philadelphia
eagles, right, yep, the eaglesand the cowboys from
philadelphia on thursday night,sept.
September 4th.
So we would want to have ourdraft, probably in the last week

(01:16:31):
of August.
So let us know if you'reinterested.
And now Please stand clear ofthe door.
It's time for a race report.

Speaker 9 (01:16:44):
Por favor, manténganse alejado de las
puertas.

Speaker 3 (01:16:49):
A race report sponsored by our friend Thomas
Stokes.
Stokes Metabolic Training, stokesfit slash rise and run
coaching.
In the middle of Tom's eightweek challenge, I've been on
some of his Zoom calls.
He's got a very active groupworking on that.
Of course, he still has hisother training programs

(01:17:10):
available.
Information's pinned to the topof our Facebook group page.
So let's start out on Saturdayand head to Boston,
Massachusetts, where they hadthe Run to home base at Fenway
Park.
It's a 9K and our friends Jakeand Teddy were there to run it

(01:17:35):
and they join us for the RaceReport Spotlight.
Hiya guys, it's good to see you.
Hey Bob, hey John, yeah, it'sgreat to see you.
Well, thanks, Thanks forjoining us.
You know I always appreciate itwhen our friends take time and
come join us here and we have alot of fun with that.
So, thank you.
So I'm excited.

(01:17:56):
I want to hear about this race.

Speaker 8 (01:17:58):
So I'll tell you one thing first.

Speaker 3 (01:18:00):
Yeah, go ahead.

Speaker 8 (01:18:01):
There was a choice between a 5K and a 9K.
Okay, and we chose the 5K.
There was a choice between a 5Kand a 9K and he chose the 5K.

Speaker 3 (01:18:08):
Oh, okay, gotcha, okay, I gotcha.
I thought so.

Speaker 8 (01:18:14):
But I think I probably had it in as the 9K you
did in the race report yeah, and that's fine.

Speaker 3 (01:18:20):
So we ran the 5K and that makes sense.
I know Teddy's new to 5Ks, sothat makes sense.
I know Teddy's new to 5Ks, sothat's cool.
But I'm going to ask each ofyou if you can tell me and I
don't care who starts, dad, maybe you should kick it off.
How did you get started with?

Speaker 8 (01:18:39):
running.
Well, it's been a long.
It had been a long time, a longtime 20 years plus until about
a year and a half ago, my lastbirthday.
So it's been about 14 monthsnow and I just decided I was
losing some weight and I decidedthat I was doing it with the

(01:19:02):
help of medication and I decidedthat I didn't want to do that
passively.
I wanted to do something moreactive and really take advantage
of the weight loss and the newhealth.
And so I started running and itwasn't long after just doing a
kind of couch to 5K and findingGalloway and signing up.

(01:19:23):
Then for what?
My first big race was the halfmarathon, the wine and dine half
last year, and that brought meto Rise and Run, it brought me
to Customized and, man, it'sbeen a heck of a run.
No pun intended.

Speaker 3 (01:19:40):
Since I've done a bunch of halves, you snuck it
past us anyway, it's okay.

Speaker 8 (01:19:45):
Yeah, no, I've done a bunch of halves.
I did the full marathon inJanuary, I'm getting ready for
Chicago in October and it's justit's.
I thought when I started it wasgoing to be you know, one and
done, kind of let's see if I canaccomplish this kind of thing.
And it's, it's not, it's it's,it's a way of life now.
There's a lot of that goingaround, jake, a lot of that

(01:20:07):
going around, it seems like it,and it's such a great community
of a lot of people in that boat, which has been great.

Speaker 3 (01:20:13):
All right Now, teddy.
What made you decide to startrunning with Dad?

Speaker 11 (01:20:20):
Well, so Dad was running a lot, and then before
that I was doing a littlerunning.

Speaker 3 (01:20:27):
By yourself.

Speaker 11 (01:20:29):
Um, I was doing like a race, like every week.

Speaker 3 (01:20:33):
Oh, that's good, I was like three then, so you were
doing races when you were three.
Wow, wow, that's pretty coolman.

Speaker 11 (01:20:42):
And then I just saw dad running more when I was four
or something.
I just thought, if he's running, maybe I can try to get better
at running.
I was already running, so Ididn't want to just like stop
doing something.

Speaker 3 (01:20:57):
Oh, that's great, Teddy, you're, you're seven now,
is that right?

Speaker 11 (01:21:01):
I'm eight and a half .

Speaker 3 (01:21:03):
Eight and a half.

Speaker 4 (01:21:03):
I'm sorry I missed that you got to get that half in
there, Bob.

Speaker 3 (01:21:08):
Well, I get that, but it's my mistake.
I read a lot of reports and Ipromise you somebody out there
is seven, but it's not you.
You're eight and a half.
Well, that's cool.
And now you're running 5K races.
Huh yeah, is that the longestrace you've run?
A 5K?
Yeah, yeah I don't mind tellingyou when I was your age, I
wouldn't have done that.

Speaker 11 (01:21:29):
So that's really good.
So do you train for the 5Ks,Teddy?

Speaker 3 (01:21:52):
Yes, you run with Dad in training or you do it by
yourself.

Speaker 11 (01:21:55):
I run with Dad, I do this running group thing.
Oh, I was doing sprints before, but now I'm doing like distance
stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:22:03):
That is outstanding, my friend.
Really really good.
Well listen, why don't you tellus about the race on Saturday?
How did it go?
What were some of the excitingparts?
How much fun did you have?
I'd like to hear about it.

Speaker 11 (01:22:16):
The most exciting part was just Fenway.

Speaker 3 (01:22:20):
Yeah, Fenway's pretty cool.
I got to agree with that.

Speaker 8 (01:22:23):
Yeah, it's a great setup, so it started at 8 am
with this really nice ceremony, just to start.
It's a fundraiser and theyraised almost $4 million this
year for the Run to Home Baseorganization.

Speaker 3 (01:22:39):
Just from this race.

Speaker 8 (01:22:41):
Just from this race, yeah.
And so there were about 3,000participants in person and I
think more virtually, and abunch of local organizations and
corporations who had teams, andthey had this great ceremony
Iraq, afghanistan, anywhereoverseas a place to go to deal

(01:23:01):
with PTSD and other problems.
I think the most poignant thingI heard during the ceremony was
this idea that it shouldn't beharder to come home from war
than it is to go to war.
And yet I think a lot of peoplefeel like it is and are

(01:23:24):
reluctant to reach out for help, and so they're really trying to
solve that problem, and weheard from some incredible
speakers who were talking aboutall the work they did.
So it was really a great eventand a really kind of
motivational ceremony for aboutan hour, from eight to nine
right, and then you line upright outside Fenway Park and

(01:23:44):
take off, and they sent the9Kers off first and then the
5Kers.
The Red Sox manager, alex Cora, ran the 9K.
There were a bunch of other RedSox family people and wives and
some of the TV's personalitieswho all participated, so it was
pretty well attended.
Yeah, I liked how they couldjust bring the person that
invented it who all participated.

Speaker 11 (01:24:05):
So it was pretty well attended.
Yeah, I liked how they couldjust bring the person that
invented it to run.

Speaker 8 (01:24:12):
Oh, the person who invented Run to Home Base.

Speaker 11 (01:24:15):
Yeah, if they were doing that for 16 years, I would
probably get tired.

Speaker 3 (01:24:21):
They were doing it before you were even around,
Teddy.

Speaker 11 (01:24:24):
I'd be like one race , two race, three race.
I don't really want to do anyother races, You'll see, we'll
see about that.

Speaker 3 (01:24:32):
We'll see about that.
But yeah, that's pretty neat.
Did you see any of the Red Soxfamily members?
Because the ballplayers weren'tthere.
They had a game that day.

Speaker 11 (01:24:41):
Yeah, I saw Red Sox-related people that I
totally didn't know.

Speaker 3 (01:24:46):
No, you wouldn't, no, I wouldn't expect you to know.
I'll tell you a Red Sox legendJohnny Gomes ran the race.
Oh, okay.

Speaker 8 (01:24:52):
World.
Series champion, johnny Gomeswas there and running Alex Cora
like I said, the manager ran anda couple other TV people.

Speaker 11 (01:25:00):
Yeah, I was pretty excited that Johnny Gomes, or
whoever that guy was, had theexact same glasses as me.
Oh neat, different colors but,not a lot of people have those
glasses.

Speaker 3 (01:25:11):
Do you think he copied from you or did you copy
from him?

Speaker 11 (01:25:14):
He probably had them for a while he probably had
them first.
Yeah, I just got them recently, just to copy my favorite
baseball player.

Speaker 3 (01:25:22):
Who's your favorite baseball player now?

Speaker 11 (01:25:24):
Ryan Cox.

Speaker 3 (01:25:25):
Okay.

Speaker 8 (01:25:26):
And he plays for who?

Speaker 11 (01:25:27):
The Savannah Bananas .

Speaker 3 (01:25:30):
Oh golly.
No, that's cool, and listen, our friends can't see this, but
what are you wearing right now,Teddy?

Speaker 11 (01:25:40):
I'm wearing a Savannah Bananas jersey signed
by Ryan Cox.

Speaker 3 (01:25:43):
Oh, that's cool.
That's cool.
They were just there in Bostona couple weeks ago, weren't they
the Bananas?
Yeah, and you went right.
Mm-hmm had a good time.
Yeah, I loved it.
All right, I'm glad to hear it.
I love baseball.
I haven't seen the Bananas.
They were here in Tampa, oh inthe fall, but I didn't win the

(01:26:04):
lottery or whatever.
You got to get up.
Well, you know it's a toughticket.
It's a tough ticket.

Speaker 8 (01:26:10):
We've been very lucky , but it's a great show.
Anyway, the back to the race.
The.
So the 5K goes, goes out outFenway Park and you basically
run down Mass Ave over thebridge into Cambridge and so
it's beautiful views out to theStatehouse.
And then as you turn around, back out to the Sitco sign and
really a gorgeous, you knowquick 5K.

(01:26:33):
You come back up Mass Ave, makethe right and you turn on to
Lansdowne Street and run rightfrom the street right into the
center field, essentially ontothe warning track.
Yeah, onto the track.
Yeah, and we thought that you'dfinish at home base, which is
sort of the way they sell it,but it would be impossible with
all the congestion.
So you actually finish in theoutfield on the warning track

(01:26:54):
and then kind of get snakedaround in a line and they take
your picture right at home plateand a couple of days later we
got our picture back.

Speaker 4 (01:27:02):
Because if they finished at home plate they
would need space and they'replaying, so they need to feel,
to be good, and then all thefootsteps would be there, so
they just need to squeeze peoplein and end it.

Speaker 8 (01:27:14):
A different part they would have been careful about
keeping us on the on the morningtrack and not on the field oh
yeah, I can imagine, maybethey're, maybe they're just like
, that's what they do every day.

Speaker 3 (01:27:25):
Oh, it is.

Speaker 11 (01:27:26):
They just don't let anyone.

Speaker 3 (01:27:27):
They do not, I promise you, they do not.

Speaker 11 (01:27:30):
Major League Baseball groundskeepers that's
like holy land out there, you donot touch that they sometimes
do things where some specialoccasion you get to go onto the
fields, but not every game.

Speaker 3 (01:27:46):
Uh-uh.
No, it's very, very unusual, because they take such good care
of that.

Speaker 8 (01:27:52):
You know what, bob?
Even at 8 am they were outworking the field for the 7
o'clock game that night.
Oh, I'll bet While the eventwas going on.

Speaker 4 (01:28:00):
I'll bet.
Oh, I didn't know there was agame that night.
Yeah, there was.

Speaker 8 (01:28:05):
That's even more interesting that they actually
yeah, I think it wasn't us, butI think people who raised enough
money got tickets to the.
It was a Dodgers game thatnight and they honored they
honored the top fundraisers thatnight as well.

Speaker 11 (01:28:18):
Dad, if I were you, I would pay a lot of money just
to play, just to see FreddieFreeman.

Speaker 3 (01:28:26):
He's a ball player, all right, we don't want to see
Freddie Freeman.
How about Shohei Otani?

Speaker 11 (01:28:31):
Yeah, he's cool.
He's pretty good my mom saysthat when he's batting he's calm
, and I don't like when peopleare calm.

Speaker 3 (01:28:40):
Hey, let me ask you guys do you have any races
coming up?

Speaker 8 (01:28:46):
Yeah, we both do so.
I'm getting ready for the fullmarathon in Chicago in October
on Sunday.
But what are we doing on thisSaturday, right beforehand?

Speaker 11 (01:28:57):
I think we're like grabbing a few of my friends
from school and we're all goingto go to Chicago, because our
parents are all running themarathon, I think, and we're
going to run the 5K together.

Speaker 8 (01:29:11):
There's a 5K on Saturday before, so a shakeout
run for me and a nice run forTeddy and maybe some of his
friends.
We've got actually a few of hisclassmates' parents are running
Chicago as well, so we're goingto have a great group.

Speaker 11 (01:29:18):
Actually two, and it doesn't have any more syllables
, just to say two.

Speaker 4 (01:29:26):
And it's more convenient.

Speaker 3 (01:29:29):
You nailed it, buddy Nailed it.
You're right.
I think it's fantastic, and Isee a lot of young people I'm
not joking when I was, Iremember, in the sixth grade.
So what are you in the sixthgrade?

Speaker 8 (01:29:42):
10, 11, 12, something like that You're going into
third, right yeah?

Speaker 3 (01:29:47):
We had to run, I think, 600 yards.
We had to run the 600.
Oh, my goodness, we thought wewere going to die.
And you guys are running threemiles, teddy, that's great.
Hey, teddy, you pr'd this race, didn't?
This was your fastest 5k,wasn't it yeah?

Speaker 11 (01:30:05):
according to what my dad sometimes says, that'd be
good, but he never really saidthat it was good.
Like I said, I think I likebeat it by 40 seconds or
something yeah and usually whenhe's doing something and he
beats it by 40 seconds, he'slike, oh, that's so good he did
not do anything for me, so Idon't know what to.

(01:30:27):
Oh, I was super excited for youhe congratulated me with the
whole race, but he didn't saythat was a great pr well let me
say it now that was a great prthe rise and run crowd's gonna
cheer for you.

Speaker 3 (01:30:39):
okay, how's that that feel better?
Yeah, guys, are you running atDisney?

Speaker 8 (01:30:50):
So I am hoping to have a very quick trip down for
the Wine and Dine half again andI'm going to do Dopey this year
and we're working on whetherTeddy is going to make it down
early enough or just come tosupport.

Speaker 3 (01:31:05):
We'll see Wait, so you're saying there's a 5K to
run.
There are.
Yes, there is Teddy, there's 5K.

Speaker 11 (01:31:09):
I'm going to run it.

Speaker 8 (01:31:13):
We're working on it.

Speaker 3 (01:31:15):
I understand.

Speaker 8 (01:31:17):
Thursday is tough.
I've run two 5Ks.

Speaker 11 (01:31:19):
I think I'm fine.

Speaker 3 (01:31:21):
I don't think you can do it bud, yeah you got to get
all the way to Florida and yougot to get registered.

Speaker 4 (01:31:28):
That's a long run to Florida.
It's a long run to.

Speaker 8 (01:31:30):
Florida and it's the first week back from school
after vacation.

Speaker 3 (01:31:34):
So we're working on it.
Yeah, I understand thatcompletely.

Speaker 4 (01:31:37):
It's a tough week, so , Teddy.
So what's your favorite part ofFenway?

Speaker 11 (01:31:43):
Related to the race or just Fenway?
Fenway in general Cause um, Ilike the green monster, and
that's the only answer.
I just like that.
It's just like one of the bestfields, Like I know, like I know
I'm not saying I'm not sayingthat it's actually bad, but I

(01:32:05):
just want to say it's good.
It's actually good, Like it'slike the second best field.
What's the best?
Wrigley Field.

Speaker 4 (01:32:14):
Okay, Okay Well those are the two oldest.
I mean, I really enjoy thatthey still have the old placard
standings on the the oldscoreboard manually operated.

Speaker 8 (01:32:26):
Yeah, I'll tell you what we got to.
As part of the warning track,we were right up against the
green monster, got to touch it,got to look in and see where the
guy who runs the scoreboardsits.

Speaker 11 (01:32:35):
Yeah, I got to like take a cool picture and I just
literally just jumped onto thegreen monster and stuck my hand
out, so it looked like I wastouching the ball Like and stuck
my hand out so it looked like Iwas catching a ball Like.
The green monster is just good.
It's like it's so special.
If you do get a chance to touchit or do anything with it, it's
great, so it's the best to haveit around.

Speaker 3 (01:32:56):
It is a part of baseball history and baseball
lore.
It really is.
Well, look guys.
Thank you for taking time tojoin us and tell us all about
this.
It was exciting, it was fun.

Speaker 8 (01:33:09):
I hope you had a good time and absolutely Great race
and if you, if you registerearly enough, the fundraising
commitments are really not thatdifficult.
So for people in Boston orpeople who want to just take the
trip for the weekend, it's areally great race but also just
a great cause.
I was really happy to supportit.
We're going to do it again nextyear, for sure.

(01:33:30):
And we mentioned the cause, right the cause is the run to
home base, so it's home base isthe organization.
This is the cause that supportsveterans who are coming home
from war, essentially, andhelping them get the help they
need to get back home.

Speaker 3 (01:33:47):
Guys, thank you so much.
We appreciate you joining usand we will talk with you later,
okay.

Speaker 8 (01:33:49):
Thank you, guys, and, by the way, let me be the first
to say congratulations on your201st episode.

Speaker 3 (01:33:53):
You stuck it in there , good job, good job, you are
the first Moving on.
In Indianapolis, indiana, raleigh and her husband ran the
half marathon at the Christmasin July half marathon in
Indianapolis, indiana.

(01:34:14):
In Adrian, michigan, christyran the Flying Otter Winery 5K,
7 pm.
Start for this hot, humid andhilly race.
Okay, I'm going to stop sayinghot and humid on the races, I'm
going to assume that every oneof them is hot and humid.

(01:34:34):
So, on this hilly race and ithad lots of mud also not a good
PR course this isn't PR time, myfriends, this is summer
training equals fall PR time.
Anyway, christy and her friendElise both placed sixth in their
age group, which is cool.
Christy used a Disney trick tohelp her with the heat.

(01:34:58):
She put an icy sponge under herrise and run hat, under her
Rise and Run hat, and we'll hearmore from Christy when we get
to Sunday.
In Jacksonville, florida, megandid the Kilwins Ice Cream 5K.
Megan and her friend came, sawand danced the Macarena for an

(01:35:23):
entire 5K.
It was a fundraiser, friends, and it was pretty cool.

Speaker 5 (01:35:28):
That's impressive.

Speaker 3 (01:35:29):
It was cool.
They had ice cream when theyfinished.
They had a good time.
Everybody had a good time, eventhe people who were around them
and heard the Macarena playingover and over and over again for
the entire 5K.
Hey, Megan thinks, and I thinkshe's right, this is her fastest

(01:35:50):
5K Macarena ever.
That's a PR.

Speaker 6 (01:35:54):
Eh, Macarena.

Speaker 3 (01:35:58):
In a weekend event, the Jack and Jill Downhill
Marathon and Half Marathon atSnoqualmie Falls in Washington.
Sarah and Vanessa ran OnSaturday.
Vanessa crushed the full andthen Vanessa ran the half on

(01:36:21):
Sunday.
Now Sarah ended up with a newhalf marathon PR on Saturday and
Vanessa ended up with amarathon PR on Saturday also.
Awesome, that's a lot ofrunning in one weekend.
This is a scenic and gorgeousevent.

(01:36:42):
A two-mile trek through whatused to be a train tunnel.
Gorgeous event.
A two mile trek through whatused to be a train tunnel.
You have to walk about a mileup a steep hill to start the
half, but then it's downhillafter that.
Gorgeous views from the traintrestles, view from the train
tunnel.
Not so much.
The downhill was deceptive.

(01:37:03):
I've never run an entirelydownhill race like this, but I
hear this from people who do itthat it's deceiving.
You have no idea how your quadswill feel the next day.
I've also heard folks say thatyou get so used to running
downhill that when it justlevels off, it feels difficult.
It feels difficult.

(01:37:23):
Anyway, at the end of all this, sarah looks like she got on the
wrong bus and well, she got tospend an extra hour enjoying the
beautiful mountain views.

Speaker 5 (01:37:39):
I just want to say congratulations again to Sarah.
She's been working really, really hard to come back from
injury and illness and to get aPR, for this one was really
special, so congratulations,sarah.

Speaker 3 (01:37:45):
It was a good one.
Good job by both Sarah andVanessa.
They both PR'd.
Yeah, congratulations.
Yeah, all right, let's go toSunday for the Kona Aloha Run 5K
, which of course was inMichigan, milford, michigan.
Christy's back Weather a littlebetter for this run than it was

(01:38:07):
the one she finished just theevening before.
So she pushed a little harderfor this one, a little more
elevation gain than on Saturday, but it was a long downhill
towards the finish.
That was nice, much bigger runthis time and she ran it with
her friend again.
They figured there would be noway with the extra runners that

(01:38:31):
they would match their age groupsix place finishes from
Saturday.
And they were right.
Elise finished third andChristy finished first in her
age group.
How's that?
Aloha Pretty dag gum rootin'tootin' rotten stinkin' bird
turnin'.
Good ladies, way to go.
In California the Wharf to Wharfrace went from Santa Cruz to

(01:38:56):
Capitola and Bethany was therefor the fourth time for this
event but because of roadclosures it wasn't exactly the
wharf at Santa Cruz.
It was more like the propername would be the random street
somewhere in Santa Cruz to thewharf race.
It nonetheless was an excellentevent.

(01:39:18):
New Course was just a littleshy of the normal six mile
distance, 5.9 to be exact.
Bethany had never run a 5.9mile race before.
So before we leave the racereport, one more thing Our

(01:39:39):
friend Mark Burgett, who hasbeen with us a couple of times
and Mark is a Galloway Pacer atDisney World and a darn good one
he participated in the TridentImmolation Challenge at Jupiter
Ridge Natural Sand Spur inJupiter, florida.

(01:40:01):
It was bloody hot, as you mightimagine for a 24-hour event
3.3-mile loop, a lot of itactually on the sand.
So what does Mark do with hisrun-walk-run pacing?
And Mark is a run-walk-run guy.
He sets a new course recordAwesome 79.2 miles using Run

(01:40:25):
Walk Run.
So if you think that Run WalkRun is just for folks who can't
hack it and can't keep up, markis living proof that that's not
true.
And this is not the first timeMark set a course record or won
an event.

Speaker 6 (01:40:41):
Bob, did I read it correctly, that he broke in
terms of the course record?
He shattered it by like an hourand 45 minutes, or something
like that.

Speaker 3 (01:40:51):
Greg, I don't have that in front of me, but I would
not be surprised at all he does.
I mean, that's spectacular, andI did see somewhere where the
temperature of the sand was like112 or something.
Gosh, this is not the time tobe running.
See what did I just say?
You can't set PRs this time ofyear.
Mark goes ahead and proves mewrong.

(01:41:13):
But it's all good.
At least it is Great job, mark, and congratulations.
