Running truly connects us across continents, time zones, and finish lines—a truth brilliantly illustrated in this globe-spanning episode. We begin with a comprehensive look at the triumphant return of Disneyland racing through the Halloween-themed race weekend that kicked off the 2025-2026 runDisney season. Our panel of runners shares firsthand experiences navigating the Disneyland expo, enjoying extensive park time during both the 10K and half marathon, and discovering how the California races differ from their Florida counterparts in delightful ways.

The adventure continues halfway around the world as we visit with Carrie, who conquered the Sydney Marathon—recently designated as the seventh World Major. Despite challenging hills that surprised this Florida runner, she achieved a personal record while taking in breathtaking views, including the iconic Sydney Opera House. We learn about the unique medal design and how the Abbott World Marathon Majors program is evolving as it expands beyond the original six races.

Our international tour concludes in Newcastle, England, where the Great North Run—the world's largest half marathon with an astonishing 60,000 participants—captivated both runners and the 200,000 spectators lining the course. Andy shares how this nationally televised event has become a cultural touchstone in Northern England, complete with helicopter coverage and a deeply personal connection as he continues trying to beat his father's time from decades ago.

Between these major events, we explore dozens of race reports from community members conquering everything from trail challenges to local 5Ks, demonstrating that whether you're stomping grapes like Alysha or pushing through marathon training, the running journey connects us all. With Wine and Dine just six weeks away and marathon weekend training intensifying, there's never been a better time to find your place in this worldwide community of runners.

and hopeful signs.

training tips to tales thatshine inspiration in every line.
We may fall, but we rise again, fueled by community and friends
.
The road is long, but we belongin this rhythm, in this song

hard, but on a treadmill Happylistening and see y'all the next
race weekend.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
That was Adrian from Texas who finished 23 miles on a
treadmill.
Now Adrian broke up a littlebit at the end, but what I heard
was happy running.
See you at the next raceweekend and I need to follow up
with a little apology and alibiin a bit, but before I do that

(01:50):
Big week, Gosh.
It's kind of like race reportson steroids right now.
This week we're going to stepback a little bit and talk about
the Sydney Marathon.
The Sydney Marathon.
We're going to visit with abunch of Ryzen runners who
christened the 25-26 run Disneyseason out in California during

(02:14):
the Disneyland Halloween race.
We know there was a big race inPennsylvania this week too, but
we got so much going on we'regoing to put that off for a
little bit.
However, in the race reportspotlight, our friend Andy from
the UK ran the Great North Run.
That's kind of interesting.

(02:36):
That's a major event, one ofthe biggest in the world, that a
lot of us in the US are notfamiliar with.

Boy.
If you don't have yourreservations for the Disney race
season, what are you waitingfor?
It's time to contact ourfriends at Magic Bound for their
no-cost assistance in makingthose.

(03:47):
So I guess I need to do thatpretty soon.
I'm set for the first one andthe last one.
I got to get the two in between.
Hey, and a reminder friends, you know we're going on that
cruise in April.
Last I heard we were up to 100people on board the cruise ship,
but there's always room formore opportunities still

(04:10):
available.
Magic bound travelcom is thewebsite to check out in the
apologies and alibis section.
Let me explain the intros.
Adrian, actually was supposedto be the intro for last week,
but for the first time in 206episodes I screwed it up so

(04:34):
badly that even Greg couldn'tfix it.
It's very true.
So you may have noticed, therewas no recorded intro last week.
So if you sent one and when youdo it, I I like to message you
and say okay, we're going to useyou in episode 207, 208, 209.

(04:56):
Just add one to whatever I said.
So I think we.
So I think we've got three morein the can.
But whatever I told you, yournumber was just add one and hey
you know, if I go another 209 or207, I'll consider that a
success.

Speaker 5 (05:17):
Although I will laugh my bottom off if one of these
days we do get a Rise and Runlistener named Shasta.
Yeah, one of these days we doget a.
Rise and Run.
Listener named Shasta.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
A little inside joke there.
All right, let's take a look atthe training schedule.
Of course, disneyland Halloweenrace comes off the board and
it's kind of sad because what Ido, I have a schedule here in a
spreadsheet and I typically, when one race weekend ends, I
take it from the top and I putit down at the bottom so as the

(05:50):
days and weeks and monthsprogress, it climbs back up.
Didn't do that this time.
Took Disneyland Halloween raceweekend and just said delete row
because we don't know whenthat's coming back.
However, wynodine, we know, isnow six weeks away.
Six weeks away we are intraining week 12.

(06:12):
This is something else I mayhave had wrong in previous
episodes, I'm not even sure, butI counted them out.
Today we're in training week 12.
You have an 11-mile long run ifyou're doing the challenge this
week and I'll tell you what Iprobably messed up you probably
have some mileage on Friday alsoto walk If you're doing the

(06:35):
challenge.

Speaker 9 (06:36):
I'll check for you, Bob Hold on.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Thanks, john.
While you're doing that, let metake a look at Walt Disney
world marathon, now 17 weeksaway.
Training week Dopey and Goofy.
This is a short week.
Dopey and Goofy is three milesand, from the experienced
marathon schedule, there's somespeed work.

(06:57):
On the Galloway plan it's fourtimes one mile repeats, so if
you're running, I'm not going togo into it.
You know what those are and howyou're supposed to do them, but
you got four times one thisweek.
What'd you find, john?

Speaker 9 (07:12):
So, bob, if you're doing the challenge, you might
want to do three miles a daybefore the 11.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
Okay, thanks John, it makes sense.
Three and then 11.
How's the training going,friends?

Speaker 6 (07:24):
So my training is going really well.
We've talked about how my backwas hurting and I, for the last
couple of years, I've been myown coach.
I know that my training planswork well.
Um, but I was lackingmotivation, um, to get myself
out the door.
And so, starting last week, Iactually started working with

(07:45):
our friend Brittany and doingher happy meal program, which
basically, yeah, she just givesa plan through a marathon
weekend for that one.
But I just needed that extralittle push to get me out the
door and I mean, so far it'sworking great and I'm on track,
so yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
Yeah, I was thinking you could just listen to a good
motivational podcast and we'dget you out.

Speaker 6 (08:12):
Usually it's my mom saying, aren't you going to go
for a run today?
And I think she was gettingsick of that.
I was like I need somethingelse.
Um, um, but yeah, I mean herplan is great and um, yeah, I'm
excited to see what I can dothis season.
Yeah.
Hopefully this year's marathonwill go better than the last

(08:33):
couple.

Speaker 5 (08:34):
What was the toy that came with the Happy Meal?
I'm very yeah, right.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Right, the collection of Lincoln pennies.
Um, I love that.
Yeah, I'm.
I'm back on what I'm calling atraining plan.
I'm getting out and walkingnearly every morning.
I I walked four miles thisweekend, more on that later,
like much later.
But I walked three today.

(09:00):
I am not at my normal walkingpace.
I am not at my normal walkingpace.
I feel great kids, I feel maybea little too good, but I'm
following rule number one.
Remember, last week I talkedabout recovering injury?
Rule number one pay attentionto your medical team.
I've got this silly.
Well, it's not silly.

(09:23):
I've got this back brace thatI'm supposed to wear for the
first couple weeks.
I don't feel as though I needit.
Uh, I went out what's today?
Today's Tuesday, I went out ohgosh, I forget when it was not
long ago and I'm walking alongand I feel really great.
And I go, oh boy, this is good.
I feel like, oh, I forgot to putthe brace on.
So I'm ready to go do my walkwithout the brace.

(09:45):
And I'm thinking, dang nabbit, you just told everybody rule
number one pay attention to you.
So I came back in the house, threw the thing on it's it, uh,
I don't know restricts my motiona little bit and slows me down,
but I still feel fine walking.
So my objective right now I Isee the doctor next Wednesday,

(10:05):
so it'll be after next episodeand we'll see what's next.
I don't, I don't, I won't knowtill then, but I will continue
walking.
I plan to walk six miles thisweekend and with the objective
of being able to walk the totaldistances for the Wine and Dine
Challenge by the time that comesaround.
So we're making progress,friends.

Speaker 5 (10:25):
You know, Bob, I know you're not at 100% walking
shape.
You're typical walking shape.
Right, there's someone who'scoming for you.
I don't know if you noticedthis, but Hollywood has started,
I think, prescribing to the Bobwalking program and he's
putting up some prettyimpressive paces that I think
maybe at one point, maybe inlike a run Disney corral before

(10:48):
a race, we should have like aquick, like you know, 200 meter
walk off.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
Yeah, it may have to wait quite a while.
I I hope to pick up some of myspeed.
Um, when he gets under 12minutes a mile, let me know,
okay.

Speaker 5 (11:02):
All right.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
Now, when he gets under 12 minutes a mile, let me
know.
Okay, all right, now I've onlydone that for two miles, all
right, it's not like I've doneit a lot, but I have done it.

Speaker 7 (11:13):
Alicia, what you said about finding motivation, it
really makes a difference whenyou're doing workouts that you
are really enjoying, because Imean, y'all know my story with
the burnout that I wasexperiencing last year and how,
just not wanting to go run, um,but I mean, I'll tell you, I've
been going to the gym, um, totrain with my trainer, uh, three

(11:37):
times a week now for four weeks, I think three weeks, since I
got back from Japan.
Four weeks, I think Three weeks.
Well, since I got back fromJapan, and I'm having so much
fun and you know, just waking upand being like, okay, I mean
sometimes, yeah, I wake up andI'm like I don't really want to

(12:00):
go train right now, but then Igo and he'll say something like
oh yeah, it's Lexi, she's mystrong one, coming in and I'm
like I'm the strong one, butit's, you know, it's welcome to
feel that feeling of going to aworkout and getting done with it

(12:20):
and like, yeah, I did it.
Or doing 10 reps and thenhearing my trainer say, no,
let's do, let's do five more.
Or like I was on the stairclimber Saturday.
Yeah, today's Tuesday, I was onthe the stair master thing.

(12:40):
We were going to do fiveminutes and then I got to five
minutes I was like I'm gonna dolike a minute more and I ended
up saying that four times anddoing 10 minutes good for you,
great job it was, it was good itwas, it's cool yeah, it reminds
me of an expression do you likerunning?

Speaker 3 (13:00):
well, I like having run.

Speaker 7 (13:02):
So right, I like finishing.
It's the feeling afterwardsthat you're like, yeah, I did
that John any training update?

Speaker 9 (13:10):
Yeah, I had a long run this weekend, so I decided
to hook up with Greg and Bob andabout 45 other friends and did
a half marathon.
But we'll talk about that nextweek.

Speaker 3 (13:21):
Okay, john, all right , good stuff.
Hope your training's going well.
Friends Caution runners.

Speaker 5 (13:27):
Change of topic ahead .

Speaker 3 (13:30):
You know what we could do right now.
We could ask what would Aliciado?

Speaker 6 (13:40):
Are you ready for this one?

Speaker 3 (13:41):
Oh heck yeah, I've been waiting all day.
Are you ready for this one?
Oh heck, yeah, I've beenwaiting all day.

Speaker 6 (13:45):
So what would Alicia do?
Alicia?

Speaker 3 (13:50):
would go grape stomping.
Grape stomping.
Yeah, you're making wine yeah.

Speaker 6 (13:56):
I love Loopsie episode where they grape stomp.

Speaker 9 (13:59):
First thing I thought of.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
That is a classic scene in American comedy.

Speaker 6 (14:04):
Absolutely, that is a classic scene in American
comedy, absolutely, and so thiswas something that a friend of
mine posted on Instagram and itwasn't far from me, and so I
decided I wanted to do it, butsomething that I do each month.
I actually do it with the newmoon, as that starts a good time
for intentions and goals, but Ialways have a goal to try

(14:27):
something new, and so I wastrying to figure out what to do
for the month, and when I sawthat I was like I'm going to go
grape stomping and I went and Ithere was going to be in between
the grape stomping competitionsthere was going to be just
individual like you could go upand grape stomp, which is what I
went to do originally and I gotthere and that wasn't going to
happen for like two more hours, and so I was like, okay, I guess

(14:50):
I'm going to be in a grapestomping competition.
I got second place.
There was only my mom there tocheer me on.
I did get a lot of other cheers, but the man next to me had a
lot of people there, so he wonum.
But my question with this is um, is there anything that you

(15:12):
guys have done that has been onyour life list, um, that you
always wanted to do and you'vedone.

Speaker 5 (15:18):
Or maybe you want to do and haven't gotten to do it
yet I really thought thequestion was going to be have
you ever been invited to be partof a food competition?
Well, you can answer that too, greg, if you'd like, okay well,
if that's the case, then yes, alicia, I do have something all
right so, oh god, this.

(15:39):
This was a couple years ago, butmy dad was on a committee in
the town where I grew up, uh,and there was a fall festival
and one of the events during thefall festival was a holupki
eating contest you gotta help mewith that craig, okay, uh
holupkin.
Uh, holupki, it's a.
It's an eastern european dish.

(16:01):
I feel like every culture hasits own version of it, but my
grandmother calls it hlupki.
So it is rice and ground beefwrapped in cabbage, steamed
within like a tomato saucepoured over top of it.

Speaker 9 (16:21):
Sounds good.
Cabbage roll that's what mygrandmother called it, yeah.

Speaker 5 (16:28):
So the committee decided to do this halupki
eating contest and they had twopeople that signed up who didn't
show up, so my father enteredme into the competition uh
unbeknownst to me, so that wasfun to prepare for yeah and,
uhless to say, I got annihilatedbecause I think the guy that
won didn't have many teeth, so Ithink he was able to slurp them

(16:52):
down a lot faster, whereas hereI'm trying to chew through the
cabbage and everything, and itwas quite the mess, so I didn't
do my family proud that day.

Speaker 3 (17:04):
Oh, I don't know, Greg.
Based on what I've seen fromsome of these eating contests, I
think I'm more proud of thefact that you didn't win.

Speaker 5 (17:14):
I mean going into it.
They were saying I was the JoeyChestnut of Holupki eating oh
well, that didn't last long, butagain, that's probably good.

Speaker 3 (17:23):
I'm probably happy for you there, alicia, I can't
think of anything.
All I could think of is boy,I'd be really good at stomping
grapes.
Yeah, that's a big feat, um andand we try.
We haven't done it for a while.
I started to do it when I washere.
Becky and I would go to adifferent brewery every fr.

(17:44):
We called it Brewery Friday andwe go to a new one.
That's kind of fun.
Yeah, we may do that tomorrow.
A lot of breweries in this areaare independently owned, so
that's neat.
But I think it's neat that youwent grape stomping girl.
I think that's pretty cool.

Speaker 9 (17:59):
Did you keep the wine ?
What's going on with this?

Speaker 6 (18:05):
So if you won the competition, you got a free
bottle of wine.
I, for entering the competition, got a free glass of wine, so I
got that.
There was also an apple orchardthere and a cidery, so I got to
experience those as well.
So it was fun.

Speaker 3 (18:17):
Alicia, what was the criteria for?

Speaker 6 (18:19):
winning Just the amount of cheers that you got.

Speaker 9 (18:24):
Oh, okay.

Speaker 6 (18:25):
I did put a reel on my personal instagram um runner
girl alicia, if you want tocheck it out.
Um, but I should have one.

Speaker 5 (18:35):
He just had way more people, yeah okay, see, I, I I
call, I call baloney herebecause, like when you started
describing this like the onlything I could like, I mean
outside of, I love lucy.
The other thing that went to mymind is like one of those like
physical challenges from doubledare where, like you, had to
like stop enough grapes to likefill up the bucket to get past

(18:57):
the line and the wind.
So the fact that it's based oncheering like yeah, great for
the moral support but if you, ifyou got more volume than that
guy, right you, you shoulddemand a yeah, it's fixed yeah
it was.

Speaker 6 (19:11):
I definitely made those run disney moments of like
having fun and enjoying life uminto the competition and I was
turning around and dancing andstomping those grapes, so yeah I
hope that inspires some of ourlisteners to go out and do
something fun um, or maybe crosssomething off their bucket list
.

Speaker 3 (19:31):
And that was what would Alicia do.

Speaker 5 (19:35):
Caution runners.
The topic is about to changeright now.

Speaker 3 (19:40):
I've said it a couple of times already.
I'll say it a couple more timesbefore the episode's over.
It was a big race weekend thisweekend, but right now we want
to talk about the start of the2025-2026 run Disney season,
which started at Disneyland withthe Halloween race weekend,

(20:04):
which started at Disneyland withthe Halloween race weekend.
Now, none of the Rise and Rungang were there, but a bunch of
the Rise and Run family wasthere and we are so excited to
have these friends with us thisevening.
I'm going to ask them tointroduce themselves and let's
start with Alan and Grace.

Speaker 14 (20:24):
I'm Alan from Anaheim.
I'm Grace.
We're happy to have a localrace and to be part of the Rise
and Run.

Speaker 3 (20:31):
We're proud to have you guys, I promise.

Speaker 15 (20:34):
Hi, this is Chrissy from Bedford, Pennsylvania.
This is my second time going toAnaheim and running at
Disneyland and excited to behere and share what happened.
Go birds Exactly.

Speaker 8 (20:48):
I'm Leslie from Colorado Springs.
This was my third Disneylandrace weekend.
But about final count, it'slike my 10th visit to Disneyland
.
My first time was December 89.

Speaker 11 (21:02):
Hi, I'm Megan.
I'm from Ohio.
This was my second trip out toHalloween weekend and it was my
attempt at redeeming myselfafter last year not going so
well.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
Yeah, we wanted to give you a chance to tell us
about that, Megan.

Speaker 4 (21:18):
I'm Courtney.
I'm from Long Island, new YorkIsland, new York.
This was my second time out toDisneyland.
First time doing the Disneylandhalf and completing my coast to
coast.

Speaker 2 (21:33):
Hi, I'm Dorothy.
I'm from Kennesaw, georgia, andthis is my third time going out
to Disneyland and my secondcoast to coast Hi everyone, my
name is Lauren, I am in Decatur, georgia, and this is my first
time in Disneyland.

Speaker 10 (21:47):
So my first Disneyland race, my first coast
to coast, and it was my 40thbirthday on the 10K.

Speaker 3 (21:53):
That's yes, I knew that.
I knew that.
Happy belated birthday.
What a great way to celebrate.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yeah.
Well, friends, thanks forjoining us.
It would have been a prettydull race recap without you, so
we're glad you're here.
Let's start.
And let's start and talk aboutthe expo now.

(22:18):
Everybody got to the expo, probably on different days.
What I'd like you to tell ourfriends about is how was it?
And if you have experience atDisney World, how much different
is it out there at Disneyland?
And let's kick it off, megan, why don't you start that for us

(22:39):
please?

Speaker 11 (22:40):
Well, I didn't get to the Expo till Saturday
because I didn't get into lateFriday night.
There was surprisingly a decentamount of merch.
I was actually able to get thecotton t-shirt, not just like
the techie ones, but they werecompletely out of ornament shoes
so I was really bummed aboutthat.
Oh sorry, my collection is nowincomplete.

(23:01):
The one thing I did reallyenjoy I am not a beer or cider
person, so I never get the cupsat walt disney world because I
can't justify that.
But this time for the cups theyhad a lime dole whip with
tequila and that I could handlewow, I that I didn't realize it

(23:25):
had tequila in it yeah, but thecups?

Speaker 6 (23:26):
were really cute and I love that they had the Dole
Whip.

Speaker 3 (23:29):
Run that by us again.
A lime Dole Whip with tequila.

Speaker 11 (23:34):
Yes, you could get it with or without tequila.

Speaker 3 (23:36):
Almost made the trip worthwhile.
It's like a frozen margarita.
That's what it sounds like,yeah.

Speaker 6 (23:42):
Up my alley Margarita .

Speaker 3 (23:42):
That's what it sounds like yeah, my alley, yeah,
right, right.

Speaker 8 (23:45):
I went on Thursday.
I got to my hotel about 945.
So I walked over, got thereabout 1030.
There was kind of a line to getinto the bibs and you did what
kind of you expect probablyhappened before, like the tape
that they will tape down thequeue line.
So it didn't take long to getthrough that.

(24:07):
So got my bib, got my shirt andkind of walked around the expo
a little bit and I also tookadvantage of the compression
boots because during my last runbefore the race, which was
Saturday before, my right calfkind of had a spasm so I was
trying to do everything I couldto make sure that I could do my

(24:29):
race.

Speaker 10 (24:30):
I got there on Thursday.
I think I got to the expo about1 PM.
There was no line to pick up mybib at that point and when I
was walking around the expothere was some merchandise I
wanted and I saw the really longline for the queue and the only
other Disney race I had donewas princess, and I showed up at
the expo the day after it hadopened so I did not know I

(24:53):
needed to actually sign in forthe virtual queue.
I think I was in the line asnumber 193, like group 193, and
they were on 53 or something soabout four hours later I got to
get online but they had plentyof merchandise like Megan talked
about.
I'm sorry you didn't get theshoes.
They did have plenty of them.
I wish I would have.

(25:13):
But no, I mean, it was a greatexperience as far as everybody
knowing what they were doing andushering people in just helping
out.

Speaker 4 (25:21):
So um, so I went friday afternoon.
Um, I came straight from theairport, so I got there around
12 pm and I was able to walkright into everything.
There was no line at all, except for the brooks uh
sneakers.

(25:41):
That was the only thing thatthere was a line for, but
everything else they still hadquite a bit of merchandise.
They still had the shoeornament on Friday afternoon.
But, yeah, it was really easyand very different from Disney

(26:02):
World with having everything sospread out there.
But it was just two floorsreally at Disneyland.

Speaker 2 (26:10):
So I got there Thursday morning.
But I'm part of Club Run Disney, so it was a little bit
different of an experience.
And when I went, I guess thefirst time last year, it was a
really long line even to get infor Clever and Disney, so I kind
of let the lines die down.
They opened up, I want to say,at seven or 730.

(26:32):
I didn't get there till closeto eight and there was no line.
You just walked right on intothe merch section.
It didn't seem as crazy as itwas before.
It was pretty simple.
I was kind of disappointed theydidn't have any new Coast to
Coast merch, because this waswhen I was earning my Coast to
Coast medal and the medal was sopretty this time I was really

(26:54):
hoping they had some additionalmerch, but not yet.
So keep an eye out for that.
And then, yeah, I picked up mybib and everything was way more
streamlined than I think it hadbeen in the past, or maybe I was
just more familiar with it thistime around.

Speaker 5 (27:09):
So do we think that there was no coast to coast
merchandise because of the racesunfortunately going away soon.

Speaker 2 (27:17):
So in the chat I had mentioned it and somebody said
that they had talked to a castmember and they were kind of
redesigning the merge.
So we'll have to see if newstuff comes out.
But I mean, this was a time alot of people were able to earn
it.
So I was really surprised.
There wasn't anything to thepoint where I was like wait, did
I miss it?

Speaker 15 (27:35):
do I need to go back and like no, it just wasn't
there yeah, so that was therumor that they weren't going to
make any more because it wouldstart a new year, but it doesn't
really make sense when youstill have wine and dine to
happen.
So that could have been yourfirst race at Disneyland to get
coast to coast this year.

(27:55):
So I actually had bought mycoast to coast stuff when I was
doing dopey and I had so manypeople ask me where'd you get
your shirt, how did you get that?
And so there definitely wouldhave been people buying it, so
it didn't make sense not to makemore.

Speaker 5 (28:09):
Disneyland in 2026, you would still be eligible as
long as you did a half marathonor even the 10-miler at
springtime in 2026.

(28:29):
So yeah, I don't think theyshould be stopping merchandise
by any means, but I guess we'lljust have to wait and see.

Speaker 9 (28:35):
Has they officially announced the 2026
coast-to-coast.
That's the thing.
There's nothing on theirwebsite about it yet.

Speaker 15 (28:44):
Oh, good point, good point so, talking about what's
different about disneyland anddisney world, with the expo
you're not doing as much, maybewalking, because it's more
compact in disneyland, but I didfeel like disneyland was less
handicap accessible, so therewere like little steps in the um

(29:04):
expo area and then you had andI think you would have had an
elevator to go up and get yourbid, but it just the hallways
were tighter.
So like I just thought aboutthat that you know for some of
our racers that are in wheeldivide, like how difficult that
might have been for them tonavigate there.
It's also a littledisappointing.
They have, um, no charactersthere.

(29:25):
Club Run Disney people got somecharacters but in general
characters weren't there andthey only had like two or three
photo opportunities.
But they were still really nicephoto opportunities.
So I just think like if you'regoing to these two races like
it's hard to really compare themyou should just go and enjoy

(29:47):
the experience, that it is Right, and so just like, look for the
things that you really enjoy.
So I really enjoyed that it wasso compact and I wasn't putting
a bunch of miles on my legsjust on Expo Day, so that was a
bonus.

Speaker 11 (30:01):
The only other comment I wanted to make the
other thing that I didn't get toget that I get at all the races
is the half magnet.
Um, kind of sounds like there'sa little controversy.
The I saw someone posted apicture of it.
They got it the first day andthe one was missing from the
13.1.

Speaker 6 (30:21):
Oh, really, I think they pulled them all, so we
weren't able to get half magnetseither it was actually on their
doubly so, like the middle said13.1 and then in one of the
upper corners it said 3.1, andso they I think they pulled them
because of it did you get achance to say hi to jeff?

Speaker 11 (30:40):
I did.
I stopped and talked to him andtalked to one of the pacers,
and then saw him again later on.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
I saw Jeff too.
They got him a chair.
I was very happy to see.

Speaker 3 (30:50):
I was glad to see that he gave him a chair.
I was glad to see that 80 yearold man.

Speaker 2 (30:55):
It's about time he gets his chair yeah, so I was
like, oh, and it was like one ofthose like tall director chairs
, so you're still like I withthem.
It's perfect, loved it.

Speaker 3 (31:04):
Alan, you think they'll get us a chair in a
couple years.
We need one now all right.

Speaker 6 (31:10):
So, corny, I think it was you that mentioned the
brooks shoes.
Having this be a new raceweekend, we saw a new shoe which
had those glow-in-the-darkbottoms.
Um, did anybody, corny you hadmentioned you were there did you
get them?
Did anybody else get them?

Speaker 4 (31:26):
I got the purple Halloween pair nice.

Speaker 11 (31:30):
They were sold out by the time I got there, really
in any of the sizes that I wouldhave fit.

Speaker 3 (31:36):
Yeah, that was not a problem at Disney World.

Speaker 11 (31:40):
I think it's.
I don't know if they had lessbut I know, like the purple I
think, was a lot more popularthan any of the ones they had's
springtime.
I don't know if they had lessbut I know, like the purple I
think, was a lot more popularthan any of the ones they had at
springtime.
Like purple ones were sharp.

Speaker 3 (31:50):
That's.
I'm sorry to hear that, cause Iknow you know people were
excited about getting them.

Speaker 7 (31:55):
Has anyone seen if they're posted Like, because I
know after the last race weekendthey were posted on.

Speaker 3 (32:08):
Tomorrow yeah the rumor is tomorrow that oh really
yeah, which means, which meansyesterday yeah they will have
posted by the time.

Speaker 15 (32:16):
People are listening the other rumor yeah, the other
rumor I heard is that we'reonly going to have the mickey
and minnie shoes for a littlebit, and then those are going to
change too.
So, and Minnie shoes for alittle bit, and then those are
going to change too.
So I don't know if it's true.
I didn't hear it from Brooks,but that's something.

Speaker 7 (32:30):
I heard, so get them now if you want them okay, expo
always fun.

Speaker 3 (32:37):
I love it.
Get a chance to see our friendsback, and this one especially,
you know, back to run Disneytime.
It'll be that way at wine anddine it's back to run Disney
time.
It'll be that way at Wine andDine it's back to run Disney
time.
The expo's how we kick it off.
They did have yoga, but I don'tbelieve anyone here attended
the yoga.
Is that correct?

(32:58):
Yep, okay, for those of you whoare listening, a lot of people
are shaking their heads.
No, okay, for those of you whoare listening, a lot of people
are shaking their heads.
No, okay Now.
You told us before we kickedoff that none of this group here
had run the 5K.
However, lauren, you said youspectated the 5K, so you are now

(33:20):
our 5K expert, lauren.
How was the 5K you are now our5K expert, lauren.

Speaker 10 (33:24):
how was the 5K?
5k was amazing.
So I got to the Esplanade towatch.
I think I got there probablytwo minutes before the lead
runner or I think the lead willdevice came through.
And then the runners camethrough, looked good.
I stayed out there about anhour, made a friend and

(33:47):
chit-chattedatted with her for awhile.
She kind of explained to mewhere I needed to be, but uh, we
shouted encouragement andscreamed and yelled for
everybody and uh, there wasn't aton of people out there um that
early or in that area where wewere.
So it was nice.
Um, I felt like everybody wasactually hearing us scream and
yell for them, rather than justbeing lost in the crowd.
So it was really cool.
We had a lot of really coolcostumes to see.

Speaker 5 (34:09):
That's awesome.
Now again, lauren, you onlyspectated, so maybe you didn't
hear a full story or maybe youtalked to another runner to get
their perspective, but we hadheard reports that during the 5K
I guess, the course gotshortened ever so slightly for

(34:29):
the, I guess, crowd D or beyond.
Did you hear any stories aboutthat or hear about anyone who
might have been affected by that?

Speaker 10 (34:38):
I saw a few people posting about it.
I didn't hear anything while wewere out there, but a few
people said that I think thattheir watches clocked them at
2.9 or something like that.

Speaker 5 (34:54):
Um, where they had, they deviated from the course
just a little bit.
Yeah, okay, yeah, the.
The big thing I saw was, um,our friend amanda, over at once
upon a marathon.
She had put up an instagramstory just showing, like a the
course map and then what was aset in, like the, the deviation
that they made, and I mean itlooked like it was just as you
were running through CaliforniaAdventure you just went straight

(35:14):
and you didn't loop intoAvengers Campus.
So I mean it wasn't.
It's not like it was a massivecut by any means, but obviously
you know every little bit helpsin terms of those logistical
things.

Speaker 6 (35:24):
So I can confirm that , greg okay, I did talk to sarah
, who was also there, um and didit and yes, she said they just
didn't um take that first leftturn.
They went to adventures campus.

Speaker 3 (35:37):
So do we know why?

Speaker 6 (35:39):
um, they were very strict at these races for the
timings, and so I guess theymade the decision, since it
ended in the park, that sixo'clock would be the cutoff for
that specific piece, althoughthe parks didn't open until 8 am
.
But that's what I've heard.

Speaker 8 (35:58):
Okay, I think Disneyland had early entry and
the DCA had eight o'clock.
So just for those planning togo out in January, just note
that those parks open an hourearlier than Disney World.

Speaker 3 (36:14):
Okay, and the 5K starts in Disneyland, right.

Speaker 15 (36:19):
Well, the 5K and the 10K are like almost all in the
park.
Yeah, they're all in the park.
There's very little all in thepark.
Yeah, they're all in the park.

Speaker 8 (36:24):
There's very little outside of the park yeah, but
the 5k starts on main streetkind of by, like you see the
matterhorn like right there Iread somewhere um that they were
going to cut out opening earlyfor the hotel guests sometime
next year, but I don't know whatthat is.

Speaker 10 (36:40):
So, um, I guess, when you check out um, if it's
happening in january, just makesure um before you plan on
getting.

Speaker 5 (36:47):
Oh, yes, I, I did read that.
Yeah, I think that I I want tosay that is ending.
It is ending before the raceweekend, so hopefully that won't
be a, you know, a major issue.
Um, I, I think, like a disneyrep said, like not a lot of
people were were, you know, taking advantage of it or
something like that, and thiswas my favorite part, though not

(37:10):
to go into tangent here butthey're, instead of doing the
early entry, they're givingeveryone one lightning lane for
free, and not per day just onetotal you gotta love it all.

Speaker 3 (37:23):
Hey, better than poking the eye with a sharp
stick, right, I guess.
So All right, all right.
5k ends on Friday.
Saturday is 10K day Now.
We had folks running the 10K.
So, chrissy, how was the 10K?

Speaker 15 (37:43):
First I got to tell about how I got into the 10k.
So originally, I was just gonnago do the half marathon, do my
coast to coast, because I, youknow, didn't have a lot of
vacation time and everything.
But a few weeks before I builta Dalmatian Lego set and I was
just like, oh my gosh, I gottahave that medal.
So I was able at the lastminute to get a charity bib and

(38:06):
it was a really quick turnaroundwith the fundraising.
They did reduce the amount Ihad to do, but I was so excited
to get into that and I didn'thave to change like my hotel and
flight or anything like that, cause I was already going to
come in on Friday, um, but Ifeel like they did a fabulous
job with the theming.

(38:27):
So they had Cruella on a stageand she was just, she was
amazing, she just was so incharacter and lots of great
photo opportunities with her.
and then they had another areawhich had like the crunchy
canine tv display with thelittle Dalmatians and you could
get inside and be in the tv andthat was really cute and then

(38:49):
when you got towards the finish,we were coming around this turn
and corella's vehicle was thereand you could get your picture
with the car, um, so that allwas just awesome.
They did cut some characterphoto lines early.
So around mile five was Mickeyand Pluto and they cut the line
and at that point the balloonladies had just hit about mile

(39:11):
three, so there was still plentyof time so and the line wasn't
that long.
So that was a littledisappointing, but I think it
goes back to like what we saidabout the five K.
You know, this is all in thepark.
They got to get ready to openthe park pretty quickly after
the race, so there was still, you know, plenty of great
opportunities and thosecharacters that you missed at

(39:32):
the 10k if you were doing thechallenge, I mean, some of them
were there the next day as well.
So I I thought, you know it wasgreat to be in the parks most
of the time and just a reallygreat race.

Speaker 8 (39:44):
Yeah, I got a really good picture because they were
doing projections on Small Worldso it was like Ruella color and
puppy paw print, so I was ableto get a really good picture of
that.
I thought their characterselection was much, much better
because I did the January raceslast year.
So the first race weekend theycame back and they were like I

(40:05):
don't know three character stopsand so those lines were really
really long.
And I do remember going throughPixar Pure.
You had a lot of Incrediblescharacters.
I think I remember MrIncredible, I remember Edna.
So it was like a really goodjust mix of characters between
the theming for the backdropsbut also characters just kind of

(40:28):
complementing the area of theparks they were in.
And then you also have theopportunities for selfies and I
remember Black Panther was up onthe riser of Avengers and
trying to remember if there waslike Stormtroopersopers up on
the rise of in galaxy.

Speaker 15 (40:48):
The storm troopers were there for the half for me,
but I saw kylo ren at the 10k.

Speaker 8 (40:54):
So when we came into galaxy's edge and there was, it
wasn't at the millennium falcon,it was in another part where
they were standing and we coulddo selfies yeah, there weren't
many character stops withphotopass photographers oh,
mostly selfies, huh yeah, selfies, or like there would be

(41:14):
a cast member and you would handthem okay and then they would
take your with your phone, uh,but it wasn't like the
professional photographers whichis a bum bummer, because
PhotoPass is included withDisneyland races.

Speaker 15 (41:28):
I was just about ready to say that.

Speaker 5 (41:30):
And you would also think too that if you wanted the
lines to be more efficient withDisneyland having the PhotoPass
photographer there, that wouldactually make it go quicker.

Speaker 3 (41:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (41:41):
Because, as opposed to okay, I got to open my phone.
I'm going gonna hand it off nowI gotta position it and I gotta
figure out where the you knowthe shutter button is on the
phone and and such like that.
Yeah, that that is a littledisappointing but hopefully, you
know, run disney takes thatfeedback and I know they're
going away in january buthopefully they you know they do
make that adjustment for januarynow.
Uh, chrissy and leslie, the,the question I have for you is

(42:06):
all of my co-hosts here alwayslove to poke fun at me because
whenever we talk about a waltdisney world race I always say
that the crescent lake 10kcourse at walt disney world is
the quote-unquote perfect 10kcourse.
But I would have to imaginethat Disneyland would say Greg,

(42:26):
hold my beer.
Oh, I think so With this course.
Do you agree or disagree withthat statement?

Speaker 15 (42:31):
Oh I agree, absolutely, 100% agree.
Yeah, that 10K course atDisneyland is perfect.

Speaker 3 (42:37):
It's great.

Speaker 15 (42:39):
Now I will say there are some parts that were a
little tight.
You know you're in the park, sothere's only so much room to
run and you're sitting backstage, like the backstage would be
pretty tight.

Speaker 8 (42:49):
But I think the first mile marker was by Grand
Californian and when we poppedout on stage in DCA it was in
Cars Land and so, like all ofthe lights in Cars Land were up
and we just just like snaked ourway around.
I think we hit almost everyspot in that park before heading

(43:11):
to Disneyland.

Speaker 15 (43:12):
And again, I think we hit everything that you could
and that's like you said, leslie, like it's like you get
in there and the first thing isjust boom, there was like Cars
Land and all these lights, andit was just like magic.
And then you know you get to goover to Pixar Pier and you see,
you know the Ferris Wheel likelit up and just the amazing

(43:34):
pictures you can take there onthe bridge.
And then you know you get to gothrough galaxies.
It's just, if there's anythingyou like about Disney, you're
going to get it on that courseat some point it is a good
course.

Speaker 3 (43:48):
All right, so the 10k finishes.
Now, saturday afternoon, it'smeetup time.
Alan and grace, I would like tothank you for taking the lead
on the meetup, and why don't youkick it off by telling us how
you thought the meetup went,please?

Speaker 14 (44:09):
I thought we had a great turnout.
We had even more people than weexpected.
We had a lot of cookies andeverybody had a lot of fun.
People were getting there Iknow Karen Jessup was getting
her hair braided, so we had alot of activities going on, but
everybody was very friendly.
Everybody got along and sharedcookies and drinks and stories

(44:33):
and it was a great time.

Speaker 3 (44:34):
And it wasn't 107 degrees.

Speaker 14 (44:37):
It was at least 10 degrees cooler.

Speaker 8 (44:41):
And we were in the shade.
I felt it felt really nice.

Speaker 3 (44:45):
Yeah, it is a nice area.
Who else went?
What did you think, guys?

Speaker 11 (44:49):
I did.
I got there literally as theywere about to snap the picture
and so I snuck into the front ofthe picture.
So, if you see it, I still havemy backpack on and everything,
because I literally had justrounded the corner.
But then I ended up staying andtalking.
Like I think it was 4 o'clockby the time we started heading
into the park again, so it wasnice.

Speaker 3 (45:10):
That's good, because y'all started it too.

Speaker 15 (45:12):
Yeah, yeah, we got there right at two and went
right for the cookies and theywere amazing.
I got there.

Speaker 8 (45:21):
I got there at tuesday about an hour, traded
friendship bracelets, so let metry to get one of alan's and
alan, just so you know, it doesglow in the dark at pirates, it
glows in the dark at buzz and itglows in the dark at haunted
mansion I.

Speaker 12 (45:35):
I thought the meetup went well and we got a lot of
people.
We got 50 plus people.
I want to thank Mary and Kellyand Grace for doing the cookies.
There was really no setup.
The weather was a lot better.
We were in the shade.
The bracelet thing had startedonursday and the people that

(45:59):
actually wanted the group ofbracelets were the brooks people
, because the halloween shoe wasglow-in-the-dark.
So the halloween shoe is goingto sell out and wine and dine is
getting their own shoe okay, okay, that's interesting to know
, alan, that wineed down to gettheir own shoe.

Speaker 3 (46:19):
That's cool.
We can look forward to thatthat'll be neat.

Speaker 12 (46:22):
So I don't know if they, unless they have extra of
the uh halloween shoe that's notgonna be at world in I gotcha,
I gotcha.

Speaker 3 (46:33):
It says disneyland on the back.
So I kind of didn't think itwas coming to disney world
anyway.

Speaker 12 (46:38):
So I think right now , each one of the races is going
to have their own shoe and then, potentially, there's going to
be a new mickey, mickey andminnie shoe in january okay,
well, we'll have to see whathappens it seems like whatever
the race theme shoe is, is isthe ghost model and then the
other shoes are the glycerin.

Speaker 15 (46:59):
So again, if people are into Brooks, you know,
knowing that, that might helpmake a decision.

Speaker 10 (47:06):
I tried to walk over to where I thought the picnic
or the meetup was about 2.10 andI didn't see anybody, so I kept
on walking.
But I did see somebody posted amap and had the exact spot
where it was after and I waslike man, I wish I would have
walking.
But I did see somebody posted amap and had the exact spot
where it was after and I waslike man, I wish I would have
seen this.
I don't know how I missed youguys, but hi and I was looking
forward to meeting everybody.

Speaker 3 (47:27):
I'm sorry you missed it.
They are a lot of fun.
Well hidden behind the hedges,it is.
It is, but we did our best toexplain where it was and I'm
glad uh, I'm glad a bunch of youfound it and and had a good
time, those that made it.

Speaker 7 (47:42):
that's neat so we're done with the meetup and moving
on to sunday with the halfmarathon.
So tell me, how did it go likein the starting corrals?
How was the entertainment andthe start of the race?

Speaker 4 (47:57):
I was in g corral so I was like middle back, um.
It was kind of interestingbecause they had them all in a
straight line, since the corralsare quite a bit smaller than at
disney world, um, so they justkind of ran straight back.

(48:18):
It was very convenient becauseI was staying right next to the
start line so I just could walkright back and it was great.
But yeah, I did notice therewas a lot less PhotoPass
photographers along the course, along the course, um, and, like

(48:44):
everybody else was saying that, they were mostly using your
phone, so the lines were a bitlonger, uh, than I was expecting
.
So I didn't get a ton ofcharacter photos, but I did get
a picture with the anaheim duckonce we were on the okay.
So you know, that was my funphoto of the race, um, yeah, it
was nice.

(49:04):
It was, you know, pretty warmfor me coming from New York and
not being quite as warm andsunny, so it's a little warm,
but you, you know, still had fun, still liked it.

Speaker 10 (49:25):
This was my first time to have a corral B start
and um I it made a majordifference as far as the path
not being quite as crowded asnormal or, as you are, with the
uh, further the corrals, furtherback.
Um.
I also think that it made a bigdifference with the heat, where
I know last year it wassupposed to have been like
really, really hot.
I wasn't there last year,thankfully, because I would have
melted, but this year I thinkthat it was a lot better and I

(49:48):
think I sweated more on Saturdaythan I did on Sunday, actually
doing the 10K than the half.

Speaker 2 (49:55):
So a little bit of a difference there, for me at
least 10k than the half, so alittle bit of a difference there
, for me at least.
I actually put my Garmin watchon for a walk because I wanted
to see exactly how far it wasfrom my hotel room to the Star
Corral, and it was 0.65 miles.
So that was a huge differencecompared to Disney World and it
took me 18 minutes.
So I actually set my alarm at3.30 in the morning, which felt

(50:17):
like sleeping in for a runDisney race.
I left at four and was in thecorral by 4.20.
And that was with a stop, for Igot a picture at one of the
backdrops they had.
So there's not, you know, there's not characters out front
, so you don't need to spend toomuch time like in the starting
corral areas.
But they did have some nicebackdrops up and I, you know,

(50:40):
asked a couple people to takesome pictures, um, and then I
went and hopped in my corral andthat was that.
That is like one perk ofdisneyland over disney world for
sure is that a pr for 0.65miles, did you?
it has to be I mean, I felt likeI could walk that, just like to
get to through security atEpcot.

(51:02):
So it was, um, it was nice, Iwas gonna say the the course.
I really did enjoy the course.
You had so much park time, um,and I've like out and backs
rather than a loop.
So once we got out onto thecity streets of Anaheim, you had
a couple miles where you knowwe were going down at like mile
you know seven or eight, andpeople were coming back at mile

(51:24):
10 or 11 or 12.
And it felt more run Disney-ish.
Even though you didn't havecharacters out there, even
though you didn't have you knowas many photo ops, you still had
a lot of DJsjs.
I felt like they did a betterjob with um course entertainment
with djs, and then you couldsee all of the people running in
the opposite direction as youand their costumes and their and

(51:46):
and what they were wearing andtheir signs and everything and
it just I liked that better thanjust like a big loop around
around the city.

Speaker 11 (51:54):
So I enjoyed that that piece just for the starting
kind of stuff.
I stayed at Motel 6, which isright by the start line.
But the problem I ran into is Iwanted to check gear and when I
went to get to the like lastyear I stayed there also and it
was very convenient to get to mycorral.
But this year, in order tocheck gear, they made me walk

(52:15):
all the way around to the otherentrance and to go in the far
side to go to the gear truck.
And by the time I got back tothe corral I had done 0.75 miles
and my hotel was like rightthere Was that a pit Never mind.
And the other thing just kind ofgoing to the end of the race.

(52:36):
I'm not a fan of where theyhave the gear trucks because
they are far from the finish.
It's kind of a hike to go getyour stuff afterwards too.

Speaker 3 (52:44):
Yeah, and you're not kind of in the mood at that
point, are you?

Speaker 11 (52:46):
Yeah, exactly.
And then just about kind ofpiggybacking on what Dorothy was
saying, I had heard kind of thehorror stories of boring
Anaheim streets and this was thefirst time I'd gotten to run on
them and I concur 100%, it wasvery I liked having the other
runners coming the other way andgetting to see them and it just

(53:07):
it made it more interesting.
It made it more exciting.
And I enjoyed the streets.

Speaker 5 (53:14):
Lauren, I want to come back to something you said
about the weather and the factthat you thought you were
sweating more during the 10Kthan you did the half marathon.
Coach Twiggs had posted in notonly Rise and Run but all of the
Run Disney groups on Facebookthat the decision was made that,
due to heat and humidity, allof the Galloway Pacers were

(53:34):
going to fall back one spot.
Obviously, the weather wasnowhere near anything like it
was last year, but did it get alittle bit, you know, hotter and
and more humid as the race wenton, or or was it pretty even
keel for for you?

Speaker 10 (53:51):
made sense, especially, I think, once we
were hitting probably mile nineor ten and, like I said, said I
was with Corral B so I had anearlier start, so the folks that
were starting in later were outin the sun longer.
I was keeping up with the 220pacers for a while, but I've
realized that they probablyweren't running 220.
So and I kept hearing them saywe need to slow down, we need to

(54:15):
slow down, so they were tellingthemselves they needed to slow
down, we need to slow down, like.
So they were telling themselvesthey needed to slow down.

Speaker 2 (54:20):
Um, so I it was interesting hearing how they
were trying to like figure outhow what they needed to do and I
feel like on the out part ofthe out and back you were
running into the sun and that'swhere it got toasty.
Once you started coming backand the sun was at your back, I
felt like I cooled off a littlebit.

Speaker 5 (54:36):
But that stretch from when the sun came up to when
you turned around, that that waspretty warm good call and
obviously I don't blame thegalloway gang and run disney at
all for for making this decision.
Unfortunately, you know therewas a tragic event that happened
at the end of the the race lastuh season, uh, with that one
gentleman who who passed away, you know, after the race but so

(55:00):
but again, obviously muchdifferent weather conditions,
but you know glad to see thatthey were.
They were taking caution aswell too, uh, throughout the
course of the race weekend.
So so good on everybody, uh.
But Chrissy, I think you had,you thought you wanted to share
yeah, so just talking about that?

Speaker 15 (55:13):
um, one thing that I did find interesting I ran last
year for the half and this year, and both times I was in corral
b?
Um this year they reallyemphasized how the pacers were
going slower and all that.
But my understanding is thevery last group of pacers who
would have been at that 16minute mile pace still had to
stay at the 16 minute mile pace.

(55:34):
They didn't go, which I thoughtwas really you couldn't add like
15 more minutes to the overallrate.
Like I thought that was alittle unfair because they were
in the hottest part of it and,as others said, like I'm in
Corral B and the sun's hittingme in the face when I hit the
streets of Anaheim, but I can'timagine what that was like, you
know, a couple hours later.
So I think there's still somework that needs to be done with

(55:58):
those adjustments for heat.
They definitely had plenty ofwater stops and, from what I
heard, nobody didn't run out ofwater at all.
So even people that were backin the pack still had plenty of
water.
So that was good.

Speaker 2 (56:10):
And they had Powerade at the first water stop station
too, so I was happy.

Speaker 5 (56:14):
Oh, that's great.

Speaker 11 (56:15):
They also did Powerade first and then water at
each station.

Speaker 3 (56:19):
Okay.

Speaker 11 (56:20):
Which I actually ended up really liking, and I
don't know why or if it made adifference.
And as far as being in the backof the pack, the second to last
water stop.
They started handing us actualwhole bottles of Powerade and
bottles of water because theyhad so much, but I think most of
us.
I took a bottle of powerade andthen realized I can't carry

(56:41):
this.
It's way too big, bulky andheavy.
And you saw then lots ofbottles along the way which I
felt bad, but oh yeah they didthat last year too.

Speaker 6 (56:49):
Um, they were handing out the bottles when it was so
hot, yeah they were also warm,so it didn't really help.

Speaker 10 (56:54):
Oh, a few of the ladies spoke about, uh, the
hotels they stayed at.
Um, I stayed on the in thedisneyland hotel resort because
I was unaware, like this was myfirst disneyland race.
I didn't know.
It wasn't like the disney worldbubble where you kind of needed
to stay on the resorts.
Um, I was in a pixar place andthey did not have a shuttle.

(57:19):
But if you walk to grandcalifornia or disneyland hotel,
there was a shuttle that wouldtake you to the start line.
Um, I think some people missedthe race at the 10k because they
lined up outside the hotel, um,the pixar place hotel, thinking
there was a shuttle.
Like somebody lined up and thenpeople followed.
So I heard a rumor about that.

(57:40):
So I just wanted to clueeverybody and that if you're
there in January um check tomake sure what um shuttle if
you're gonna do that well, goodadvice.

Speaker 3 (57:50):
I hope that's not true.
I hope it didn't nobody missedthe race, but that's still good
advice, thanks.

Speaker 4 (57:55):
I was kind of in the back of the pack-ish by the time
I got to mile 10, the balloonladies were two miles behind me
Because you could see them onthe out and back coming.
And it got pretty warm backthere for me Because we were

(58:16):
running directly into the sun atone point and then having the
sun beat down our backs comingthe other way.
So, um, by that point it was,uh, pretty hot and everything.
But like everybody was sayingthey had plenty of water.
Um, there was one stop thatthey couldn't fill the water

(58:39):
fast enough for the peoplecoming in, so they were making
people cross over to the otherside, which got a little dicey.
A bit, you're kind of playingyeah, imagine you know you're
shuffling about and everything, but it it wasn't terrible and
stuff.
But running along the streetsof anaheim was really fun

(58:59):
because you had people outsidehanding out candy, um, handing
out donuts.
Uh, people have their dogs outand you can pet their dog, so
that was a lot of fun, nice, sopretty well supported by the
city, huh yeah, yeah, that wasreally nice to see, like people
um coming out and you'd see themat like one mile and then you'd

(59:24):
see them come down to like adifferent marker when people
passed by.
So you saw the same peopleabout like three or four times
during that span, including thestormtrooper giving up taking
his case for bringing the starwars half back.

Speaker 6 (59:41):
Oh yes, that was my favorite, ellen and grace.
We haven't heard much from youand I wanted to get your
perspective on it.
Having done all of thedisneyland races before, how did
this one go for you and how didit compare to other races that
you've done there?

Speaker 12 (59:57):
I like the fact that and a couple points that were
brought up.
Number one when it was reallyhot, even the run Disney people
were going to pull the water andmake people drink Powerade.
So that's why Powerade was inthe first Second.
The water stops.
If you looked at, it were colorcoded so that blue was the
water and yellow was thepowering, so you could just look

(01:00:19):
at that and that's why all thecups were pretty well neutral.
They were all white.
I think it was run pretty well.
They have to basically clean itand they have to check after
we're done running.
So that's why there's kind of atime limit and a time crunch on
the 5K and the 10K and I thinkthat the out-and back one worked

(01:00:40):
and and we enjoyed the coursethis year.

Speaker 14 (01:00:43):
I.
I'd like to say I, I like thefirst six miles of the half
marathon, so much of it being inthe parks between California
Adventure and Disneyland.
That was really cool because bythe time we went by the casting
building I believe it was like6.4 miles and it was fun with

(01:01:03):
the out and backs, even thoughit was a little loopy, which was
fine.
But what was fun was havingpeople the other runners that
you know cheer for you, havingthem say hi.
So it was good entertainment tosee our pacing friends get to
yell at them and say hi andhaving them cheer you on, having
other friends that yourecognized, and so that part

(01:01:26):
really was a lot of fun.
I didn't know how much peoplewould like or dislike the Out
and Backs, but we had a greattime running and seeing each
other on on the course, you know, in the various, and we got to
start together in C, which wasnice.
I did feel really bad for someof the people in the back
because as I came back to finishthey were like on Lewis by the

(01:01:50):
swap meet market that's overthere and you know there's just
so much heat at that pointbecause it was dark when it
started, but the later it gotinto the morning the more it did
get hot but was thankful it wasa few degrees cooler than last
year we just have to give ashout out to anaheim and grace

(01:02:11):
and alan, you guys have abeautiful city.

Speaker 15 (01:02:13):
I mean it was.
I felt safe, it was.
You know, at three o'clock inthe morning I was walking from a
hotel that was a good 0.75miles and you get out and you
just see everybody walking fromdifferent hotels on the street
and just beautifully lit up, andso I've been to a lot of
different cities, been to streetraces and I just think you know

(01:02:34):
they do a wonderful job takingcare of the space.
And then to have the mayor, who's also a Disney runner,
that's really awesome.
Yeah, so she was at the startline and um, so, yeah, really
cool yeah, she ran it um.

Speaker 8 (01:02:48):
When I was getting my 10k medal I heard the
announcers um calling her in asshe was finishing, so I know she
did at least the 10k.

Speaker 2 (01:02:56):
I don't know about the half, but she does the races
very nice she said this was her49th half, I think when she was
on the stage before the half.
So she's she's for sure arunner and a friend, disney
supporter that's impressive Iwas just gonna ask if anybody
had a castle picture like aphoto pass picture, because I

(01:03:16):
saw photo pass photographers butthere wasn't a line and then I
didn't see any come up in my boxyeah, they had like the loop at
the bottom yeah, the pictures.

Speaker 15 (01:03:30):
I have the castles behind me and I'm running out of
it well so.

Speaker 10 (01:03:35):
So there was, you could take a picture in front of
the castle for the 10k, butthey didn't have it where you
could stop in front of it, um,for the half.
Um, because I stopped, I onlydid two photo stops one was in
front of the uh ferris wheel andone was in front of the castle
on the 10k one thing I justwanted to mention.

Speaker 11 (01:03:52):
I mentioned already kind of about making it towards
the end.
I did manage to finish thisyear, so I redeemed my two DNFs
from last year and I actuallyfinished five minutes ahead of
the Balloon Ladies and so and itwas, I did my intervals like
the whole time and felt reallygood about it, and so I'm
looking forward to Disneyland soI can try and do the whole

(01:04:14):
challenge again.

Speaker 3 (01:04:16):
Megan, you've been doing.
Megan was on the podcast lastweek week before Two weeks ago.
You're doing very well, but youreally are doing very well and
as far as redeeming yourself, you don't need to redeem
yourself for us.
We're proud of you, whether youmake it or not.
We're just proud to have youwith us.
So, but I know it feels goodfor you, so congratulations.

Speaker 9 (01:04:38):
Disneyland, just proud to have you with us so,
but I know it feels good for you, so congratulations, disneyland
.
Halloween is in the books.
Uh, what's up next?
What's your next one?

Speaker 11 (01:04:44):
disney race, uh, megan so I will be at wine and
dine doing the challenge and Ihave a little local 25k I'm
going to attempt before then, sothat should be cool, leslie um,
so I will be part of the groupgoing to honolulu and I'll be
doing the 10k okay, and then?

Speaker 12 (01:05:03):
I am doing, uh, the princess, 5k and 10k alan and
grace I'm I'm doing the full inuh, just the full in january.
There's a rumor about the 5k,but that one we're still kind of
questioning what I'm countingon.

Speaker 3 (01:05:19):
I'm counting on you guys.
We'll be dressed up.

Speaker 14 (01:05:23):
I thought a costume was posted on facebook, all
right so we'll dress up for the5k and then the uh, the full
registration just went down forthe 5k.

Speaker 9 (01:05:34):
You know that.

Speaker 4 (01:05:35):
Okay, uh, courtney uh , my next race is gonna be a
local 15k here, but then my nextrun, disney race, will be the
5k and the challenge forprincess weekend hey dorothy so

(01:05:57):
I've got a local 5k coming up ina couple weeks and then I'll be
at wine and dine for the halfand marathon weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:06:03):
For the 10k and half.

Speaker 9 (01:06:05):
Chrissy.

Speaker 15 (01:06:06):
I'll be at wine and dine for all three races and
it'll be my 25 year olddaughter's first run Disney 5k
and her first 5k race.
So excited to be able to dothat with her and get her
addicted to all this and laurenso I have a local half coming up
in about a month.

Speaker 10 (01:06:24):
Um, I am sitting out run disney for the 25 26 season
but I plan on doing a perfectseason 26 27 okay, looking ahead
, looking ahead.

Speaker 3 (01:06:34):
Okay, looking ahead, looking ahead.
Friends, thank you so much forjoining us.
Thanks for talking about theDisneyland Halloween event.
We run Disney seasons now offand running.
You got it started real well.
We hope we can continue inFlorida.
We know we will.
It's great to see you here.

(01:06:55):
We look forward to seeing youagain at a future event.

Speaker 15 (01:07:00):
thanks a lot, thank you, hi everyone, thank you
caution runners.

Speaker 5 (01:07:04):
Change of topic ahead .
Well, thank you everyone for awonderful recap of the official
start of the 2025-2026 RunDisney Race season.
Again, as we mentioned severaltimes, we are glad that the
weather was much, much betterand much more pleasant than it

(01:07:27):
was the previous year and justhearing the stories from
everyone and seeing all of ourfriends in terms of posts on
Facebook and Instagram to seehow much fun was had and the you
know the amount ofentertainment and storylines
that went into that weekend Justreally, really fabulous to see.

Speaker 3 (01:07:48):
Greg, I wanted to add you know we we don't have time
to go through in a typical racereport everybody who ran
Disneyland, orland, or burdenhand for that matter.
But I did wanted to make note.
I think lauren lauren mentionedshe ran on her 40th birthday.
I think she told us she pr'dthe 10k.

(01:08:09):
But if she didn't, here's a prbell for lauren laura.
Ann went out there got10-minute PR in the half
marathon, holly PR'd the half, caitlin PR'd the half, morgan

(01:08:32):
PR'd the half by 11 minutes, by11 minutes and Aiden finished
his first kids run for the oneto three year old.
So, aiden, this is your firstPR bell.

Speaker 5 (01:08:48):
All right, so congratulations everyone on
those PRs.
Next thing we wanted to quicklychat about are friends over at
the will run for podcast, which, which, by the way, they still
haven't invited me, uh, toparticipate in any of their
episodes, even though I'm I'msupposedly the fourth host over
there.
So, gang, I'm still waiting forthat, uh, that invite link for

(01:09:12):
the recording.
But anyway, they have very, very exciting, and that is I
can't remember if this is thethird or fourth year now, but
they are continuing theirvirtually live run.
This year that run is going tobe occurring on November 22nd,

(01:09:36):
which I believe is Aaron'sbirthday.
We're very, very close toAaron's birthday.
But this year it's going to be alittle bit more of a simplified
process, because in the pastWill Runford has done an amazing
job with these beautiful, beautiful wooden medals and lots
of great swag.
In the past they've done socksand hats and and everything like

(01:10:00):
that, but this year they'rejust leaving it as just a bib
and I think they're even, um,looking into getting stickers or
such.
But what I really appreciateabout what they're doing this
year is that the price point isextremely manageable.
It is is $5 to join for thisrun and then, as you go through

(01:10:22):
the registration process.
What they're also asking you todo, because they're keeping
that entry level low, is they'reasking for donations for the
organization Unite for Her,which is one of the charities.
When Aaron did that, you know,in lieu of flowers, you know,
michael and the family were justasking that donations be sent

(01:10:45):
towards that organization, whichsupports breast cancer and
ovarian cancer patients, whetherit's for various services,
education, therapies, so that, you know, these patients do not
have to pay these costs, andhelp to be able to offset some
of that.
So, if you are interested inparticipating in this beautiful,

(01:11:06):
beautiful event, uh, if you goto the will run for instagram
page, uh, they do have a link intheir bio right there you can
click again.
It's five dollars to sign upand then usually what I believe
they do is, at a given point intime during the morning, they
will have a zoom link that willgo live as, like, the official

(01:11:29):
start and then you can dowhatever distance you want, and
then I think they pick up thatzoom link a little bit later on
the day as just a celebrationslash happy hour.
It's a wonderful, wonderfulcommunity to be a part of, so if
you want to be able to supportthe Will Run For crew, and
especially Aaron, and Unite ForHer.
Be sure to sign up for the 2025version of the Will Run For

(01:11:52):
virtually live event.

Speaker 3 (01:11:54):
I've done it twice.
It's the fifth year.
Oh, wow, fifth, okay, fifth, okay, okay.
Live event.
I've done it twice.
It's the fifth year.
Oh wow, fifth, okay, fifth, okay, okay, I've still only done
it twice, but they do, they doa terrific job and it is.
It is a little different, alittle more special this year.
I understand that, but I justwant to tell our friends, many

(01:12:14):
of whom listen to the will runfor podcast also, that this is a
worthwhile it's just aworthwhile activity to support
period, but it's fun and they doa good job with the run.
And I'm going to sign upNovember 22nd.
I don't think I have anythinggoing on then.
And, yeah, hop on the Zoom atleast for a couple minutes.
So check it out, guys.

(01:12:36):
Worth doing All right.
Now that Disneyland is over, Iwill make a Facebook group event
for the Wine and Dine meetup at3 pm on Saturday in the food
truck area for Wine and Dineweekend.
I didn't want to do it tooearly because we do here in

(01:12:57):
Disney World.
We do our meetups at 3.
They did that one in Californiaat 2.
I didn't want both of them inthe Facebook group at the same
time and risk somebody readingthe wrong one and showing up an
hour late, although it soundslike there still would have been
a pretty good sized crew thereif you did.
However, wine and dine weekend,3 pm.

(01:13:18):
Saturday meet up in the foodtruck area, be there or be
square.
It's a lot of fun.
Folks who have been before willtell you.
If you haven't been, pleaseshow up, we'd love to see you.
Hey, something that we make alot of use of in our Facebook
group is the community chats, and apparently they're going

(01:13:38):
away in Facebook Now.
We are working John is workingon a way to come up with
something to replace those, butwe'll keep you apprised as we go
along.
All right, friends, lookingahead and not far ahead, this is

(01:13:59):
a Zoom Thursday.
I'm looking forward to this one, because here's a chance for
everyone who was in Californiaand everyone who was in
Pennsylvania and everyone whojust wants to hear what was
going on or wants to talk aboutsomething else that's fine too
to join us on Zoom this Thursday.

(01:14:19):
Upcoming episodes we've alludedto it already next week the
Bird in Hand race recap.
And now Please stand clear ofthe door.
It's time for a race report.
And clear of the door.
It's time for a race report.

(01:14:40):
Por favor, manténganse alejadode las puertas.
The race report is sponsored byour friend Thomas Stokes.
Stoked Metabolic Training,stokesfit, slash,
riseandruncoaching is the site, but instead of me continuing on,
let's hear from Tom himself.

(01:15:00):
Hey, fam, how we doing tonight.
Good to see you my friend.
Yeah, we're all doing well.

Speaker 17 (01:15:06):
Good to see everybody Great to be back.

Speaker 6 (01:15:08):
We're so happy to have you here, Tom, so we just
did.
We just finished up theeight-week challenge that you
had this summer.
How did it go?
We had a lot of friends thatwere there in this challenge.

Speaker 17 (01:15:21):
It went incredible.
This time I actually had toclose down the registrations try
to keep down, keep space for,you know, my current crew to
join in every time and whatabout over a hundred
registrations before I pulledthe plug outside of the current
crew.
So it was absolutely incredible.

(01:15:41):
And you know, this is the thirdone I've done, third one I've
done with you guys and I justkeep trying to add a little more
and I feel like we've gotten.
I've personally gotten better, but it's become more and more
fun just because the communityis incredible.
So this time we added manychallenges along the way to earn
points and that way it justwasn't always about hitting PRs,
because you guys know all therunners out there.

(01:16:03):
You can't hit PRs every singleday.
So added some mini challenges, whether it was a digital detox
or just staying hydratedthroughout the day all things
that you know go into theoverall health spectrum, just to
help people stay focusedthrough the busy summer months.

Speaker 3 (01:16:20):
I thought you did a nice job, tom, and I didn't go
to all of them.
I thought you did a nice jobwith the and I got to keep it
straight.
You had Tuesdays and Thursdayevenings and I forget you had
two different groups, but thechallenge, I think, was on
Tuesdays right, when you wouldmeet up in Zoom.

Speaker 17 (01:16:34):
We did challenge calls.
Challenge calls every Mondayand Wednesday night and then
Thursday nights.
Thursday nights is my is mynormal group coaching call,
where I have the the acceleratedcrew in.
So they were blessed with mefor three nights a week.
Some of them spent three hourswith me weekly.
It was probably more time thanI spent with the wife during

(01:16:55):
that challenge.

Speaker 3 (01:16:57):
Who the heck was I talking to on Tuesday nights,
then Twigs.
Twigs has Tuesdays.

Speaker 9 (01:17:01):
Us.

Speaker 3 (01:17:04):
No, it was the Rise and Run crew.
But yeah, monday, I should haveknown better.
I knew it wasn't Tuesdays,because I'm busy on Tuesdays.

Speaker 17 (01:17:12):
We're going to gift you a calendar because I get
notifications when somebody logson to my Zoom and one night
that we didn't have a call.
I just got a notification Bobhas logged on.

Speaker 3 (01:17:23):
Yeah, that sounds about right, but I was lonely,
but what I was getting at was Ithought you did a nice job of
organizing those and, to theones that I attended, you had a
presentation ready to go withslides and everything, and I
thought that was veryprofessional.
I'm not trying to blow yourskirt up, tom, your tutu, I'm

(01:17:46):
not trying to blow your tutu up,but I really did and I
appreciated that, that you hadsome structured work and gave
all of us a chance to learnsomething a chance to learn
something.

Speaker 17 (01:17:59):
I mean outside the workouts, outside the nutrition.
I think there's a much bigger, much bigger picture in the
health and wellness spectrum.
That really all ties in.
If you know.
One question I get asked allthe time is what supplement
should I take on a journey, onthe journey?
So I said let's do a nightfocused on that.
Let's let's do a night focusedon hydration, focused on
recovery.

Speaker 3 (01:18:17):
Recovery.
I remember yeah.

Speaker 17 (01:18:19):
Really stuff, you know, if you can incorporate it
absolutely, it's great.

Speaker 3 (01:18:24):
It was all worthwhile .

Speaker 17 (01:18:25):
I'm glad you had a good time.
I enjoyed it.

Speaker 3 (01:18:28):
You had to work on it .
I just got to watch it.

Speaker 17 (01:18:31):
I mean it was wild too.
This was the smallestdifference I had in the first
and second place.
It's based on percentage ofoverall loss and really it's not
just about the number on thescale but a lot of other things
going in.
But when we're looking at thewinner, and 12.56% lost on a

(01:18:55):
first place, 12.31% on secondplace oh wow, I mean it was so
tiny of a difference.
Blake Robertson got to give hima shout out because he rocked
it and Joe Cormier gave him arun for the money.

Speaker 3 (01:19:13):
Yeah, good for both of those guys.
Yeah, we know them both.
That's awesome.

Speaker 17 (01:19:17):
You know, fun for me because you get to a certain
point.
I said what can I add to this?
And this time, many challengesalong the way, way to earn
points.
And you know, ryan, ryan, sino, sino, sino, ryan, I'm
butchering your last name.
I see him at all the races.
He's local to Orlando and herocked it on points.

(01:19:40):
But he's been with me sincechallenge number one.
So that's incredible.
Bob, you're very familiar withVal.
Val down in Argentina.
She came in second place.
Good for her.
And the wildest part to me isthe comments.
You know, the comments she madeafter was I've been working
with you one-on-one.

(01:20:00):
We just hit a year one-on-onetogether and I'm still making
progress.
I'm still hitting PIs.

Speaker 3 (01:20:07):
I'm proud of her.
I'm proud of all of them.
That's awesome.
I got to give one moreshout-out.

Speaker 17 (01:20:11):
unless you cut me off, please do.
The third place in the pointsrace girl Heather from North
Dakota, heather Madsen, justincredible, where we started
one-on-one back in.
I want to say it was Novemberof last year and she had a big
goal and we discussed.
You know, once she gets to thatgoal I don't think she needs to

(01:20:32):
see me every week.
Let's go into the groupcoaching and shift things over.
But she lost 60 pounds, oh,awesome before I kicked her out
of my one-on-one crew, you knowI gave her the boot and she
dialed in.
She buckled down for the eightweeks of the challenge and
continued to her goal of losingan additional 20 and she beat
herself up by by not hitting thepoints by.

(01:20:54):
You know she lost by 20 pointson that, but she still gets a
little little prize.
So I got to just shout them allout because it was so much fun
and meet new people.
But I'll talk forever.

Speaker 6 (01:21:03):
Absolutely so.
If our friends that were in thechallenge want to stick with
you, um, how did they do that?
Or if people are listening thatwant to join in your regular
coaching, how do they do that?

Speaker 17 (01:21:15):
Easiest way you know to.
You know I've got two differentgroups one-on-one and group
coaching.
But the easiest way would be tohead to stokesfit slash
coaching tiers and then you'llget a little primer on both of
those.
But I recommend, recommendanybody just do the application
and you know I've got the riseand run coaching signup link as

(01:21:36):
well, which I'm sure Bob willshare with this.
But have the one-on-one calleither way.
It's 30 minutes, it costs younothing, even if you think
you're perfect.
Maybe there's something I canhelp unlock in that 30 minutes.
Sometimes it goes for an hour.
That's on you.
If you want to unpack your lifestory, I'm here for it as long
as I got the time on thecalendar.

(01:21:58):
But even if it just providesyou a little clarity, it's you
know as you can tell, I geek outover this stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:22:05):
You're usually so shy I don't know You're coming out
of your shell this evening.
I'm proud of you, young man.

Speaker 17 (01:22:11):
I'm trying.
Good stuff Also, acceptingcostume ideas for the upcoming
season.

Speaker 9 (01:22:16):
Thank you so, Tom this challenge is just over.
When's the next one coming up?
Is there anything on thehorizon?
As you?

Speaker 17 (01:22:24):
say the challenge is ending, I get asked.
There's always like 10 peoplewho message me two days after we
start Like hey, I missed thechallenge, when's the next one?
And I would love to do them allthe time, but it's intensive.
I'm doing three hours of callsa night, giving up time with the
wife, and also I'm in dopeytraining too.

(01:22:46):
So I got to balance things outand make sure balance is
important, friends.
So I say what could I do tosegue until January, keep myself
busy but also continue to giveback.
So you know, I'm going to startdoing monthly workshops, so
free workshops, and I askedmyself like hey, what would

(01:23:11):
benefit people the most?
And the first one I came upwith it was a strength training
for runners workshop.
So all about helping runnersrealize, you know, strength
training is, is just.
I think it's essential, I thinkit's the missing piece for a
lot of people and, you know, spread that message.
Free webinar about an hour long,on Wednesday, the 24th of

(01:23:35):
September.
That'll be the first one, butit's really designed to help all
runners learn to level up, youknow, improve speed and
endurance, and I'm talking twoto three short strength workouts
a week, you know, helping avoidnagging injuries that keep
people on the sidelines.
Because that's the one thingthat drives me nuts is hearing

(01:23:55):
somebody's story where, hey, Itrained so hard from June up
until December and then, bam, something happened.
How do we avoid those?
I said it before balance how dowe balance a little bit of
lifting with all of the mileageso that they complement each
other and don't just compete?

Speaker 3 (01:24:15):
complement each other and and don't just compete.
Yeah, man, that's one.
That's one thing, that up untilthe problem I had with my spine
, I was able to stay injury freefor a good long period of time
by doing the strength training Ithat's what I credit to staying
injury free, cause it's been,it had been a while for me that
I didn't have pulled thisstrained, that, and I think the

(01:24:39):
weight training really helped.

Speaker 9 (01:24:42):
It really did too.
Same with me After some of the, because what I like about your
program is you throw a lot ofI'll call them like not generic
exercises in there, like youknow okay, like leg press or
stuff like that, like you knowyou're doing, we're doing the
Romanian deadlifts and all thatother stuff.
That helped, I think, for mepersonally getting some of those

(01:25:04):
different movements in my legsso that my knees did not feel as
bad afterwards.

Speaker 17 (01:25:10):
I'm glad you mentioned Romanian deadlifts,
cause cause.
On that workshop I'm going totalk about.
You know, even if you don't endup working with me, I want you
to leave with something.
So three exercises that I thinkeverybody should incorporate,
and that is.
That is one of them, theromanian deadlift and that's one
that you can do body weight athome if you're.
You know, gym intimidation is areal thing.

(01:25:31):
I know people get scared of thegym, but romanian deadlift is
is one of my essentials.
On that, you're making me smile, John.

Speaker 9 (01:25:40):
No, it's good.
It's hard to get him smiling.

Speaker 3 (01:25:46):
You know that the time I say it every week.
It's a good program, I believein it, and I may need to do a
better job of sticking with it,but I'll be back with you I
promise I'll be back.

Speaker 17 (01:25:56):
I'll plan to see you Thursday night, then We'll see
If you want to check out.
You know, free workshop it'llprobably.
You know, those nice people atZoom charge an arm and a leg
when I want to go from a hundredpeople to 500.
So it'll most likely be.
Oh yeah, it'll most likely belimited to the first hundred
people unless I get a whole lotof registrations.
But you can head over.

(01:26:17):
Let me not butcher the webaddress Stokesfit slash running
strong.

Speaker 3 (01:26:24):
Okay, okay, running strong, check it out.

Speaker 17 (01:26:31):
And there might be a little five-day mini challenge
announced at the end of that, beginning the following Monday.
That incorporates all of theexercises.

Speaker 3 (01:26:36):
Tom, keep us up to date on these.
Let us know, you know, when wecan tell our friends when to be
there, how to get there, how toregister, because you got a lot
of you got to, you have a lot offriends in the Rise and Run
family and you're helping a lotof people out and friends with
that.

Speaker 17 (01:26:53):
I will say when I shared the link on the page I'm
going to I to remember, I'mgoing to ask that question.
You know, free webinar, giveyou as much information as I can
in that hour, but throw it inthe comments.
If there's something you wantto see me cover, just let me
know.
I, like I said, with thechallenge, I geek out on this
stuff.
I spent hours making content.

(01:27:13):
It was just, it was a blast forme.

Speaker 3 (01:27:16):
He's not making that up, my friends, it was just, it
was a blast for me.
He's not making that up, myfriends, he really does.
He really enjoys it and itshows.
It shows in the quality of hiswork and the joy he has in doing
it.
Tom, it's always a pleasure.
Thanks for joining us.
We're going to see you at Wineand Dine.

Speaker 17 (01:27:29):
You'll see me at Wine and Dine 510 and a half
two-two'd out, two-two'd out.

Speaker 3 (01:27:36):
I would expect nothing less.
Got to start working on thosecostumes.
All right, buddy, all right.
Thanks for joining us, tom, thanks for having me See you
guys.
Always good to see Tom, andagain, his program really is
worthwhile.
So it was two weeks ago now alot of great races this weekend,

(01:27:57):
but it was two weeks ago thatthe Sydney Marathon was a world
major for the first time.
Not the first time this racewas run, but the first time it
was a world major, and you know,my friends, that we always
invite world major finishers onto talk about their races, on to

(01:28:20):
talk about their races.
Now the only rising runner whoput in a report is our friend
Carrie, and we're happy thatshe's with us either this
evening or this morning, depending on who's talking.
Hi, carrie.

Speaker 16 (01:28:28):
Okay, how's it going ?

Speaker 3 (01:28:30):
We're good.
You want to explain to folkswhy I'm not sure if it's morning
or evening.

Speaker 16 (01:28:35):
So I am actually living in Tokyo.
So it is Wednesday morning forme, while it's Tuesday night for
you guys.

Speaker 3 (01:28:43):
I know and she won't give me the winning.
Tuesday night lottery numbers.
I can't believe it.
Pretty selfish, I think, Carrie.
Thanks for doing this.
Thanks for making the time, especially eight o'clock in the
morning.
You look good for 8am, Carrie.
I got to give you credit forthat.

Speaker 16 (01:29:00):
Thank you, thank you , I'm still adjusting to time
zones a little bit.
I've only been here for aboutthree weeks now, so I'm still
waking up pretty early.
But give it a couple more weeksand I'll be fully on Tokyo time
.

Speaker 3 (01:29:14):
Yeah, it takes a little while.
I used to deploy to Korea inthe Army.
It takes a little while, butthat's something I hadn't
thought about.

Speaker 16 (01:29:25):
What is the time zone difference between Tokyo
and Sydney?
Between Tokyo and Sydney, it'sactually only one hour Sydney is
only one hour later.
So that worked out greatbecause I didn't have a huge
time adjustment coming fromFlorida like I would have.

Speaker 7 (01:29:38):
Oh, my goodness.
So it's half a day, so it'salready a little bit adjusted
for Sydney.

Speaker 3 (01:29:40):
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Yeah Well, good, well, great.
Hey, listen, let's start outWell.
Coming from Tokyo, it's notthat tough of a trip for you.
So I usually ask our statesidefriends, when they're traveling
along, how their accommodationswere, how they got there.
But pretty straightforward foryou, right?

Speaker 16 (01:30:01):
It was.
It was just a direct flight, nine hours from Tokyo to Sydney,
so it was pretty easy.

Speaker 3 (01:30:06):
That's still a long way.
Nine hours pretty much duesouth the whole way.

Speaker 16 (01:30:11):
Yep exactly.

Speaker 3 (01:30:13):
Yeah, In the terms of the world majors.
Carrie, is this your first orhave you done others?

Speaker 16 (01:30:19):
It was my second.
So I up until last year hadonly done Disney and Space Coast
and I somehow, very luckily, got a lottery spot for New York
last year and after doing that Iwas like I did one, I mean I
have to do the rest of them now.
Right?
So I put in for Sydney.
I did one, I mean I have to dothe rest of them now.
Right.
So I put in for Sydney, notthinking that I would have any

(01:30:39):
chance at it.
And I got it, saw the charge onmy credit card and was like
wait what happened?

Speaker 5 (01:30:46):
Is that for?

Speaker 16 (01:30:47):
real and got in and went and ran and told my husband
hey, we're, we're going toAustralia, and that was before
any of the move to Tokyo hadcome up, so so, yeah.
So now I've got the bug and I'mdoing Tokyo in March and my
goal is to do one each yearuntil I get through all of them.

Speaker 3 (01:31:05):
Yeah, I mean sure You're in Tokyo, take advantage,
right.

Speaker 16 (01:31:09):
Might as well.
Just take the train straight tothe start line from my house.

Speaker 3 (01:31:13):
Now, how did that affect your training?
You were in Florida and yousaid you moved three weeks ago.

Speaker 16 (01:31:19):
I did so.
My training actually went thetime.
It worked out perfectly.
Training wise, I was part ofthe Lakeland Galloway group, so
they are a fantastic, have afantastic marathon training
group.
So we have a couple of peoplethat were doing New York City as

(01:31:39):
well and Space Coast.
So we had a training plan allthe way up until my final 23
miler and then my taper wasduring the move time.

Speaker 3 (01:31:44):
So that actually worked out great.
That did work out well for you.
That's good.

Speaker 6 (01:31:49):
So, carrie, tell us about this race.
Did you stay near the start ofit and how did you get to the
start of the race?

Speaker 16 (01:31:58):
So we stayed a little bit outside of Sydney
just because it was so muchcheaper and they have great
public transportation.
The trains, the buses werefantastic and everything for
race day was really clear andthe instructions really laid out
well.
So it was really seamless toget, even from a hotel, you know

(01:32:18):
, 20, 30 minutes outside of townto get into the race, so went
straight to the start line.
That morning I still have alittle bit of a Disney run
Disney in me where I still getthere like four hours early even
though it's absolutely notrequired anywhere else.
So stood there for a long timein the cold before we could
actually get into the uh, thecorral areas.

(01:32:40):
But, um, but yeah, no, it wasreally smooth to get in and to
get there and they did a greatjob directing everything.

Speaker 3 (01:32:46):
Yeah, I forgot it's.
Uh, it's just coming out ofwinter in Australia, it is.

Speaker 16 (01:32:52):
So it was a little chilly in the morning.
I was really glad to have, uh,throwaways and, um, some warmer
clothes with me, cause it waschilly in the morning.
I was really glad to havethrowaways and some warmer
clothes with me because it waschilly in the morning, but once
the sun came out, it wasabsolutely beautiful.
Could not have been a moreperfect day.

Speaker 5 (01:33:06):
All right, Carrie, talk to us about the course.
We know that you know Boston isknown for Heartbreak Hill.
New York's got the bridges.
Berlin, typically, is probablyone of the flattest ones in
terms of the world majors.
Any terrain difficulties inthis one?
Tell us about the course andany major landmarks you saw as

(01:33:26):
well.

Speaker 16 (01:33:27):
First off, so hilly coming from.
Florida.
It was so hilly.
We got there the week beforethe race and as we were walking
around downtown I kept beinglike I hope this hill's not on
the race, I hope this hill's noton the course, and it was when
I got back and they were yeah, the first thing I said to my
husband was that big street wason the course.

(01:33:49):
No, it was hilly, hardly anyflat sections, a lot of up and
down.
So that was definitelysomething different than what I
had trained with in Florida.
But you know you couldn't askfor a more beautiful course.
You start out on the north sideof Sydney, come across the
Sydney Harbor Bridge, which wasabsolutely amazing.
You see the Opera House, gothrough all different sections,

(01:34:13):
all different neighborhoods ofdowntown Sydney.
The crowd was just fantastic.
There were people outeverywhere.
So it was a really fun course.

Speaker 5 (01:34:22):
Now one site.
I want to know if you saw it,because probably one of the most
important things to me when itcomes to Australia is Bluey.
Bluey dominates this householdand it dominates my soul.
Did you see any blueys out onthe course?

Speaker 16 (01:34:41):
I don't think I saw any blueys and, to be honest, I
don't know if I would havenoticed if I would my son all
right, fair enough, I'm outside.
I was not in the bluey era ofparenting okay understood,
completely understood.

Speaker 3 (01:34:57):
Um, you already mentioned the crowd, but you
know some.
Okay, quite as thick as NewYork City is, but great crowd
support out there, music bands, people along the way, people

(01:35:21):
handing out Twizzlers and thingslike that as we went.

Speaker 16 (01:35:25):
So that was really fun.
A lot of signs, a lot of kidsout giving high fives.
So that's always fun andenergizing to see those as
you're going through.

Speaker 3 (01:35:33):
Was there a favorite or a remarkable sign that you
remember Was there?

Speaker 16 (01:35:38):
a favorite or a remarkable sign that you
remember?
Oh, my gosh, there's not.

Speaker 3 (01:35:50):
I always just love the power-up signs, the people
that have little power-ups.
That gives you an excuse to runover the side.

Speaker 16 (01:35:52):
Punch the side give someone a high five and say
thanks for being out here, especially if it's a kid holding
it up.

Speaker 3 (01:35:53):
Yeah, yeah, because they get a big kick out of that
they do, they love it.
Yeah, yeah, because they get abig kick out of that.

Speaker 16 (01:35:55):
They do, they love it.

Speaker 6 (01:35:57):
Having done New York and then now doing Sydney, is
there any considerabledifferences that you noticed
coming from the States and thendoing one in another country?

Speaker 16 (01:36:07):
I think the biggest difference between the two for
me was just the difference inthe start times.
I'm a back of the packer, sostarting towards the end, I'm a
back of the packer, so startingtowards the end.
So starting um at eight, 30 inthe morning versus I think it
was 11 for New York, was reallynice to finish um in the sun
time in the sunlight, still inthe daylight, so that that was

(01:36:28):
really nice difference from NewYork.

Speaker 3 (01:36:30):
Okay.
So, carrie, did you?
Uh, you took out on this one.
Did you run with a pace groupor did you just go out on your
own?

Speaker 16 (01:36:37):
I did.
I ran with a pace group, soI've been part of a Galloway
training group for a couple ofyears, so I was really hoping
there would be Galloway pacersat the race.
So on the first day I went tothe expo and went straight to
the pacing booth and theyweren't sure.
The gentleman who was at thebooth wasn't sure if there were
run-walk paces or not, and so helet me look over the schedule

(01:36:59):
and I was looking in my corraland the 515 pace leader in my
corral was Chris Twiggs and Iwas like I know that name.
This is perfect.
I was so excited so I was likehe is, he does run-walk, so 515
was going to be a stretch for me.
But I was like I cannot pass upthis opportunity.

(01:37:19):
I can do this.
I am going to find that pacegroup, I'm going to run with
Chris and I'm going to make itthrough, so yeah.
So found them on race morningand was so excited to be able to
do intervals.

Speaker 3 (01:37:31):
Did you hang with him the whole race?

Speaker 16 (01:37:33):
Almost Made it all the way to 20 around.
I think it was about 19 and ahalf to 21-ish.
There was just a slow constanthill and it was one of those
where I started getting a littlebit behind and lost it at about
20.
Switched from the 60-30 theywere doing and I just had to
switch myself to 30-60 and camein about seven minutes behind

(01:37:54):
them.

Speaker 3 (01:37:55):
Oh, that's great.
I think that's terrific Carrie,for a tough marathon course
like that.
That's awesome Congratulations.
Is that a marathon PR?

Speaker 16 (01:38:04):
It is, which was thrilling, given that I have
never run a course that was thathilly, so I was ecstatic to get
that.
Oh, that's terrificCongratulations.

Speaker 3 (01:38:14):
Oh, that's terrific.

Speaker 9 (01:38:16):
Congratulations, you finished the race, you got that
medal.
That medal was very interesting.
It has a little landmark kindof a landmark built into it.
Can you kind of give us anupdate, an overview of what the
medal is like?

Speaker 16 (01:38:31):
It does, so it's really cool.
It's very shiny and it has atthe bottom a cutout of the
Sydney Opera House, so it'sreally cool.
And if you look online, a lotof people did pictures where
they held it up to the SydneyOpera House, so you get the
opera house in the cutoutsection, which I thought was
really neat.

Speaker 3 (01:38:48):
Oh, it was.
It was really neat, Becauseotherwise it just looks like a
shark took a bite out of it orsomething it does.
I saw that as well.

Speaker 16 (01:38:59):
Or a Death Star.

Speaker 3 (01:39:00):
I've heard several times that it looks like the
Death Star, John.
Why didn't you think of that?
I didn't think of the DeathStar.

Speaker 9 (01:39:07):
The unfinished Death Star.
Maybe Death Star 2, maybe.

Speaker 7 (01:39:09):
There you go yeah.

Speaker 16 (01:39:10):
All right, anyone you know got their seventh or
whatever they want to call starthere that you know of there
were a couple people in the pacegroup that were running that
this was their seventh star, um,but nobody that I knew
personally care.

Speaker 3 (01:39:25):
You may not know this , but I know that sydney is the
seventh major now, but they'restill recognizing the six star
major.
Do you get to pick and chooseyour six now, or do you have any
idea how that works?

Speaker 16 (01:39:39):
I think from my understanding the original six
are still the six star andthat's still the six star medal
until they get to the full nine.
And once they get the nine andadd the Cape Town and the
Shanghai I think it is, thenit'll transition to a nine.
So for right now on my Abbottprofile it says two stars, but

(01:40:03):
then it says one of six for thefor the metal.

Speaker 3 (01:40:07):
Great answer, thank you, that's.
That's interesting to know, boynine.

Speaker 9 (01:40:14):
Here you go, you get your six.
Before the nine comes out, youget two medals.

Speaker 3 (01:40:18):
So here you go, you get your six before the nine
comes out, you get two medals.

Speaker 16 (01:40:20):
There you go.
That's true, that is motivation.

Speaker 3 (01:40:21):
I'm just thinking about how much money nine world
majors would cost the averageperson.

Speaker 16 (01:40:26):
I don't want to think about it.

Speaker 3 (01:40:28):
I thought Disney was a lot.
Ooh baby, that's a lot of money.

Speaker 9 (01:40:33):
You're down in Australia.
Did you have any of theirspecialty foods?
I know the big thing from beingan 80s guy Vegemite sandwiches,
Anything like that.

Speaker 16 (01:40:44):
I have tried Vegemite before and was not a
fan, so I did not try that onthis.
Go around no.
Nothing new before race day no,new foods.

Speaker 3 (01:40:56):
Good for you, good for you.
I can picture the disaster thatthat could have been yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:41:03):
So speaking of that, like run disney will give the
boxes after we get done with theraces.
Do the world majors give outfood boxes and did they have
anything special in there thatyou were excited to see there?

Speaker 5 (01:41:15):
was the cheese actually cheese and not plastic?
Oh, it's just.

Speaker 16 (01:41:17):
It's just not the same without plastic cheese at
to see, there was the cheese, actually cheese and not plastic,
it's just.
It's just not the same withoutplastic cheese.
At the end there was no plasticcheese and no chips.
Um, there was a little bag soit had powerade.
Um, I think it had a littleprotein like a granola protein
bar in it and an apple.
Um, no skittles, no, no plasticcheese.
But it was good All right, carrie.

Speaker 3 (01:41:38):
So you're going to do Tokyo, you're in Japan.
I can't imagine you're comingover for any Walt Disney World
runs in the near future.

Speaker 16 (01:41:48):
Well, I am signed up for Dopey.
Oh good for you.
There may be a return trip toOrlando in January coming up.

Speaker 3 (01:41:59):
Well, we certainly would be excited to see you
there.
That would be terrific.
Yeah, I hope you get over.
That'd be great.

Speaker 16 (01:42:09):
I'm hoping it's on my to-do list.
Got to start looking at flights.

Speaker 3 (01:42:16):
Yeah, it's like a 13-hour time difference or
something.
No big deal.

Speaker 16 (01:42:20):
Yeah, it'll be fine.
It'll make 2 am wake-ups easywhen it's 1 pm.

Speaker 3 (01:42:25):
That's right.
It does do that.
There's no question about it.
You'll be up is what'll behappening.

Speaker 16 (01:42:30):
I'll be good to go, you will All right, carrie.

Speaker 3 (01:42:31):
Congratulations on your marathon PR.
All right, carrie.
Congratulations on yourmarathon PR, congratulations on
finishing your second worldmajor and thank you for joining
us from Japan this evening.
Slash morning.

Speaker 16 (01:42:46):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 3 (01:42:48):
That sounds like a great event.
I'd just love to go toAustralia, but the Sydney
Marathon sounds terrific.
All right, race report.
Now let's get into it.
I'm going to do something Idon't typically do.
I'm going to go back a week Now.
I scour and I look hard and Itry to get everything done.

(01:43:10):
Sometimes I miss them,sometimes you're a little late,
to be honest, and this one fallsin that category, and normally
I don't say anything.
However, valerie ran the profootball hall of fame half
marathon 13 miles and pr'd by 47minutes.

Speaker 9 (01:43:28):
Holy cow yeah, you do , you can go back to that one,
bob, you got it.

Speaker 3 (01:43:33):
John, you do that.
We'll go back and ring the prbell.
So there you go, valerie.
I'm glad you brought it to ourattention.
Okay, let's get back now tothis weekend.
And boy, it was a big weekend.
As many of you know, we justgot done talking about the
Disneyland half.
We only touched on the BurdenHand half.

(01:43:54):
We'll recap that next week.
But there was a major, absolutely major event going on
in England, in Newcastle uponTyne, and if you know our friend
Andy, you know that's hishometown and he ran this race,
as he's done before.
But I wanted to invite him tocome on here and tell us about

(01:44:17):
it in the race report spotlight.
Andy, it's good to see you.
How are you doing?
I'm really good.
Thank you very much for havingme on.
Oh, you're welcome.
I haven't seen you in a while.
It's been eight or 10 days, Idon't know.
It's good to see you again.
I'm glad we could work it outwith this big time difference.
Well, andy, this is.

(01:44:37):
I don't think many folks in theUS realize what the Great North
Run is.
Can you just give us a one overthe world and tell us about
this really pretty incredibleevent?

Speaker 13 (01:44:52):
Yeah, so it's actually.
It's billed as the biggest halfmarathon in the world because
it has about 60,000 peopletaking part in it, which makes
it bigger than the LondonMarathon.
So in the UK it's quite crazythat it's not known worldwide
yet, and I think it was actuallythe first mass participation

(01:45:13):
event that hit a million people, who have taken part in it as
well, a few years ago.
So, yeah, it's a half marathonfrom Newcastle to South Shields,
which is on the coast, so youfinish with some beautiful
coastline um, and it's just,it's an an event that
encapsulates what the northeastof england really is all about.

(01:45:34):
It's very warm, uh, they, I saythere's 60 000 people who take
part.
There's 200 000 peopleestimated to be spectating the
event along the course, soeveryone in the region gets
involved, that's cool, that'scool.

Speaker 3 (01:45:47):
Look, it sounds terrific.

Speaker 13 (01:45:48):
How many times have you done it?
I think I've actually lostcount, but, um, I'd have to get
my medals up.
I think I'm around 13 and thecool thing is it's been going
since 1981, so my dad actuallyran it when he was younger, so
probably when he was a littlebit younger than me.
Um, and yeah, he's kind ofalways held this.
He finished in just over twohours, so he's always challenged

(01:46:11):
me to finish over your headdoes he, yeah, and I haven't
quite been able to do it.
I've got very close, so the huntstill goes on.

Speaker 3 (01:46:17):
You said I knew newcastle was in the northeast
part of england.
You said that it was very warmand you said that I think you
were referring to the way thatthe community embraces it, and
all that Typically at this timeof year in that part of England.
What's the weather?

Speaker 13 (01:46:31):
like it really varies, and it's sort of a bit
of a joke.
There's no point looking at theweather on the day of the Great
North Run, because it's neverright.
You might as well just openyour curtain to see what's
happening.
So, um, it was quite humid thisyear.
We've had years where it haspoured rain.
We've had years where it'sblazing hot summer.
So yeah, it's.

Speaker 3 (01:46:51):
It's kind of that tail end of british summer where
anything can happen all right, you touched on it, but tell us
what goes on on the weekend whenthe races are and what they are
yeah.

Speaker 13 (01:47:01):
So since getting involved in the run disney
weekends I've kind of likelooked at it as almost like a
unofficial disney weekend formyself, because on the friday we
have the great north 5k, whichhappens down on the quayside, so
again along the banks of theriver tyne, and that's probably
a few thousand people.
It's a lot quieter but it's theunofficial start to the weekend

(01:47:24):
.
And then on the week on theSaturday, the day later, they
have what's called the MiniGreat Run and the Junior North
Great Run.
So that's for the kids to getinvolved so they can get their
medals.
So I started with my daughterat 10 am on the Saturday and she
did her Mini, which is justover a kilometer.
So Lane was thrilled to her toget involved again yeah, that's

(01:47:46):
neat, that's neat.
And then the big event is thehalf on sunday yeah, a big event
on the sunday, uh, where youcan hear like the helicopters
are in the air because they film.
They go live on the bbc, sothat's kind of tells you how big
it is, um broadcast live to theentire country.
So, yeah, you hear thehelicopters over the house
because I live probably about a15 minute walk from the start.

Speaker 3 (01:48:10):
Well, that's convenient.

Speaker 13 (01:48:11):
Yeah, they shut the whole city down.
The roads are all shutthroughout the course and yeah,
it's just a huge organization, the company who organizes it
have spread out to do ones in inManchester and down South in
Brighton and things like that.
So it's kind of morphed fromwhat it was into a lot of

(01:48:32):
different events, but the greatNorth runs still, you know, the
one that's close to a lot ofpeople's hearts.
Oh, imagine 60,000 runners.

Speaker 3 (01:48:38):
You ever been involved in anything like that,
john, not running?
Yeah, you've seen the New YorkCity Marathon.

Speaker 9 (01:48:46):
And I've been at the ticker tape parades for New York
City.

Speaker 3 (01:48:49):
Closest I can come was in Hawaii.
The Great Aloha run would get30 to 35,000.
But you're getting half of thatagain.
Oh, twice that Twice.
That that's big.
How does how does the startwork?
It can't be a 60 000 peoplemass start no.

Speaker 13 (01:49:10):
So, similar to disney, you are assigned a color
and then a zone within thecolor, depending on how fast
you're going to be able to do it.
But there's no proof of timeneeded.
You just put down yourestimated finishing time when
you apply and then you say so.
For me, I was in orange, zone D, and the way it works is you
have your elites at the frontstriped with their striped vest,

(01:49:33):
then orange, then green andthen pink.
So what they do is they kind ofsplit that up into let them
have a few minutes before theyset the next wave off.
So you're in corrals, um, butit's a, it's an absolute
spectacle when you see it fromthe bridge.
As you're walking down towardsit, you just see a sea of people
and yeah, they, uh, they dolike the big mass warm-up and

(01:49:55):
see everyone kind of doing theclapping the hands above the
head.
It's it's really cool to seeit's a neat thing.

Speaker 3 (01:50:01):
It really is.
You're right, that's.
That's cool.
Now is there a a cutoff time?
Do you have to finish within acertain time or they keep the
finish line open?

Speaker 13 (01:50:10):
so there is a cutoff time when the roads have to
open because it is, you know,it's a fairly major city.
But um, what they do instead isthey say if you can't finish I
believe it's around about fivehours- you can still finish, but
move on to the past instead, sothey can open up everything.
So, um, it becomes a little bitmore unofficial and the good

(01:50:31):
thing is you get people who can.
I think the record for thecourse is 58 minutes um set by
some very elite athletes wowyeah, um, and mo, sir, mo Farah,
he's run it a few times.

Speaker 3 (01:50:46):
Oh yeah, Mo Farah, yeah.

Speaker 13 (01:50:47):
Yeah, so he was up there and that goes all the way
back to the.
You know the guys and the girlsin the pink party area at the
back, where you know they arewalking it.
There's people who do this as arite of passage in Newcastle or
the UK because it's kind of sowell known and they will take
hours and they'll walk it.
And there's people who will doit with fancy dress and they'll
dress up in massive, elaboratecostumes.

(01:51:08):
There was a couple of guys whowere carrying a big sort of
scale model of the Tyne Bridgebetween them, so that was really
cool.
But yeah, it's really welcomingfor any kind of ability similar
to Disney.

Speaker 3 (01:51:24):
Sounds like it.
All right, Andy.
How'd the race go for you this?

Speaker 13 (01:51:27):
year, yeah.
So this, I'll be quite honestabout it I've been beating
myself up a bit today.
I've had a bit of a pain in thebody, and this is all relative
right, because I finished in 216this year.
Yeah, rock solid, yeah, andthat kind of two hour one,
that's that hunt for the twohour finish yeah, dad's still

(01:51:47):
giving you grief, huh yeah um,but no, I think I want a little
bit more.
But um, as you know, I was outin disney for a two-week holiday
in august, so I kind of blew upmy own training, um, and didn't
really get a chance to go outwhen it's as hot as it was.
So, yeah, a bit unfortunate, but it doesn't deter me.
I'll be back again next year, for sure.

(01:52:08):
That's a good one.
What's the course like?
Flat hilly, undulating isprobably a good word for it.
A lot of it's like kind of onthe roads that you would take
from Newcastle to the coastanyway.
So there's a lot of it's onwhat's called felling bypass.
It is a little bit hilly.
Um, there's actually towardswhen you're about to hit mile 12

(01:52:28):
it's.
There's a reason why this, thiscourse, can't be used towards
any sort of world records orofficial records is because
there's a steep bank down andapparently the gradient is too
steep to be able to be includedin the records.
So yeah, there's's some ups andsome downs and it's always fun
to see people blow their legsout on that last mile, thinking

(01:52:49):
they were about to hit thecoastline, and then suddenly
realize they've got one mileleft.

Speaker 3 (01:52:55):
Yeah, and you started that by telling us it's a
point-to-point race, so it can'tfinish slower than it started.

Speaker 9 (01:53:00):
Yeah, Okay, so I'm looking at the medal they gave
you.
Very interesting, I guessthat's the Thames River.

Speaker 13 (01:53:08):
There's a funny story about this.
It's made the national newsbecause it's supposed to be the
River Tyne, with Newcastle onthe medal.
What they've actually done isNewcastle's neighbouring city,
Sunderland, which they have abig rivalry with.
It's actually the RiverWecastle's neighboring city,
Sunderland, which they have abig rivalry with.
It's actually the River Weirthat's on it.
And it's been a mistake.

(01:53:28):
So someone made a big mess upon that one.
Yeah, indeed.

Speaker 3 (01:53:32):
Indeed, that would be like the Broad Street run
having a map of Baltimore on it,john Something like that.

Speaker 9 (01:53:39):
I was just like, yeah , the one Newcastle was in blue,
gateshead and South Shields wasin like a goldish color.
I thought there was some kindof thing going on there, but
okay, so it's not even where.

Speaker 3 (01:53:52):
Is that a big football rivalry, Newcastle and
Sunderland?

Speaker 13 (01:53:55):
Yes, it is one of the biggest rivalries in the
country and, funnily enough, ifyou look close enough on the
curve of the medal, where theriver is, you can see
Sunderland's football groundrather than St James, which is
Newcastle.
So yeah, there's a lot of backand forth going on.

Speaker 9 (01:54:13):
Oh, golly, that's great.

Speaker 3 (01:54:15):
Yeah, that's funny.
It's kind of a shame, but it'sfunny too.

Speaker 13 (01:54:25):
Okay so when's the next time we're going to see you
at Walt Disney World orDisneyland?
I'm going to be across forDopey, the marathon weekend in
January.
I'm really excited about it and, yeah, training's already begun
in earnest Good deal.

Speaker 9 (01:54:36):
Andrew, if people want to know more about this
race or more about your runningadventures how can they find out
about that?

Speaker 13 (01:54:48):
luckily, I have a very handy uh youtube channel
that people can check out, whichis a roller coaster running.
I know you guys have um, havekind of spoke about it before um
, but it's um.
This last week when I've donesome of the great north run
content, I did like a guide a 10minute guide, so people could
know a little bit more about it.
Um is performed really well, sothe channel is looking in
pretty good shape.
It's small but it's growing andI appreciate everyone who's

(01:55:09):
already subscribed.
Or, if you listen to this forthe first time, there's a lot of
Disney content on there as well.
I record the races when I'macross there, so there's a good
chance you'll find yourself onone of those videos if you go
back and watch the Disney stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:55:24):
Way to suck them in buddy.
That's good.
Good job, good job.
Hey, andy, thanks for takingthe time.
Man, I know it's evening timeover in England and I'm glad we
were able to arrange this, andthis is an amazing event.
That again that I don't thinkyou say.
No one outside the UK knowsabout it.
Well, they do.
Now At least your friends inthe Rise and Run family do so.

(01:55:47):
Thanks for joining us, andy.
No worries at all.
Now, andy wasn't the only Riseand Runner there.
Katie was there, says.
The race is so big it took Katiean hour before she actually got
to the start line.
Weather was okay, it wasn't toohot, the wind was actually kind

(01:56:08):
of refreshing.
This is Katie's first race backin a long time.
She had strict instructionsfrom her physical therapist that
she wasn't allowed to enter anymore races this year until
they've sorted out her hipproblems.
So I don't know if this onecounted or she did it on this.
I don't know, but Katie did it.

(01:56:30):
Katie lives in a flat area, sothe hills in the Newcastle area
were a bit of quoting her a bitof a slog, but the views were
amazing.
She loves the medal, eventhough, as we discussed with
Andy.
It was kind of messed up.
Let's see.
Ian was there.
Ian says the crowds are insanewith the spectators going wild

(01:56:55):
every inch of the route.
Ian was shooting for a 2.30 andfinished in quoting him.
Now 2 hours 30 minutes and 10frustrating seconds, and to me I
don't know what my friendsthink until that clock hits two
hours and 31 minutes you ran a2.30 half marathon.

(01:57:16):
As far as I'm concerned, greatjob, although I do understand
your point, ian.
I do understand.
All right staying in Europe onFriday.
Our friend Danny good to hearfrom Danny.
Haven't heard from Danny in awhile.
I hope he wasn't hurt or I hopehe's doing well.
But Danny ran the finance runin Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

(01:57:37):
Now I know Danny's run this onebefore because I remember it
being on the race report.
It's a relatively small run,about 1,500 people, only finance
professionals in the run.
They run for charity.
Danny ran this one as atraining run for an upcoming
marathon next month and as partof DOPI training.
So I'm glad we're going to seeDanny in Florida in January.

(01:58:01):
Weather was good for this one, about 70 degrees and cloudy,
beautiful surroundings, runningthrough a forest for this one.
His plan was to run a one hourand 50 minute half, but he wound
up running a little under anhour 44.
It must be rough, danny.
Good job, my friend, good job.

(01:58:21):
Nowhere close to a PR for Danny, though that's a good run.
On Friday and Saturday there wasa big event at the Great Smoky
Mountains Half and 5K inTownsend, tennessee, friday
evening for the 5K, saturday forthe half.
This was a Vacation Racesproduction.
We had a bunch of people there, races production.

(01:58:47):
We had a bunch of people there.
A buddy, jimmy, volunteered atboth the 5k and the half, got to
pass out medals during the halfand had a great time at the 5k.
Aaron ran what's called theBlack Bear Double Challenge at
the 5k on Friday and the half onSaturday.
Aaron said Friday was warm, lots of gnats and bugs flying
around, yeah, then it rainedheavily overnight but stopped

(01:59:12):
just before the half the nextmorning.
Beautiful course, about 70degrees for most of the race.
Aaron says the worst part forher was that the road they ran
along was along the river andhad kind of a pitch to it that
followed around the mountain, kind of like being on one of the
ramps at Disney World.

(01:59:33):
Around mile 10, the 330 pacegroup passed her.
Since she had walked so muchshe was ready to run again,
decided to catch up with them.
She had met a friend on thecourse, made a friend on the
course but she kind of took off, left a new friend.
Fastest mile of the entire racewas mile 12 and she finished at

(01:59:59):
329.
Good job at 329.
Good job, let's see.
Kristen was there.
Ran the same black bearchallenge the 5k and the half.
Megan also ran the challenge.
She walked the 5k so she couldbe ready for the half.
Now she ran into Jimmy.
Towards the end of the coursethere apparently was a

(02:00:21):
playground with a sign that saidslide for a shot Interesting
playground.
So I guess they went down theslide and got a shot of fireball
.
Not bad Saturday.
She felt really good.
Fireball must have worked.
Never really hit a wall.
Fireball must have worked.
Never really hit a wall.
Got a blister on her foot thatwas like on fire by the end of

(02:00:46):
the race.
But she pushed through andknocked 10 minutes off of her
time from last year.
Nice job, megan.
Amanda ran the half and set anew PR Two hours, 52 minutes.
For Amanda's PR.
Again.
She said the weather was great.

(02:01:07):
No rain during either race.
Also mentioned seeing Jimmy atthe end who gave her a hug and
her medal, and someone namedJacqueline was there and she's
the only one who didn't submit areport.
We'll hear from Jack next week.

(02:01:27):
She'll tell us how she did inthis half.
Let's go to Saturday InMiddleburg, florida, the SOS
three hour run.
Lisa Did this, an ultra trailrace put on by Sombrero Running
Events.
Lisa got two loops in.
Each loop was 2.7 miles.

(02:01:50):
Lisa's got a bit of a problemwith fibromyalgia it's flaring
up so just tried to get a couplemiles in without overdoing it.
Melissa was also there.
I saw Melissa in the photo thatLisa took, so they were
together.
That's cool.
The Beat the Blurch 5K, 10k,half and full out in Carnation,

(02:02:11):
washington.
I love reading about this eventevery year.
It's pretty wacky.
Hero ran it.
This is the race that got herstarted into running 10 years
ago, back in 2015.
Now this year it's her secondhalf within two weeks.
That's kind of tough, but somuch more fun.

(02:02:32):
So much fun, made even more soby having her husband and
daughter cheering her on andhaving her daughter's boyfriend
and his parents run the 10K andthey also cheered her on.
Hey, hero wanted us to knowthey have road apples in

(02:02:52):
Carnation Washington too, andshe sent the photos to prove it.

Speaker 5 (02:02:57):
Yeah, but do they get theirs on a plaque that are
bronze?

Speaker 3 (02:03:00):
I don't think so.
I think that's unique to theamish country in chicago,
illinois, the run mag mile 5k.
A couple runners there, laura.
So this one starts by the lake, runs through the skyscrapers
not literally through them, butaround them.
You know how it is.

(02:03:20):
Uh, weather was beautiful.
Even though laura wasn't tryingfor it, she had her second
fastest 5k ever.
That's pretty cool.
Uh, one of the best parts isnow.
The taste of chicago is thesame weekend, so they got a
couple taste tickets as part ofthe registration.
I don't have the details onthat, but that sounds pretty

(02:03:43):
daggum good to me.
The taste of Chicago, that'sgotta be.

Speaker 5 (02:03:46):
I mean if it includes deep dish and broth.
Sign me up.

Speaker 3 (02:03:49):
How could it not Greg ?
How could it not?
Sarah was there, jeanette wasthere running the 5K both, and
Tiffany did the 10K.
Tiffany goes to bed thinking Ido not want to run a 10k
tomorrow, but dragged herselfout of bed and, as usual, once

(02:04:14):
she got going she settled in,had an enjoyable run.
They had this thing called theHoka Mile, hoka being one of the
sponsors, hoka Shoe Company.
You make a prediction of howfast you'd run the mile and you
get a prize if you're within 20seconds.
Now the kicker on this is thatwith all the downtown buildings
in Chicago they tend to blockthe GPS.

(02:04:37):
So you really don't get anaccurate signal on your watch at
the time.
So you can't cheat.
Signal on your watch at thetime, so you can't cheat.
She ended up overshooting herprediction by 13 seconds, but
that's in the plus or minus 20second window.
So she got a nice new waterbottle courtesy of Hoka In Cedar

(02:04:57):
City and I forgot to write downthe state.
The Cedar City Half Marathon.
Emily was there, completed itfor the second time.
Thank you, sarah, for makingthe report on behalf of Emily.
Up to Massachusetts for the Runto the Rock Half Marathon in

(02:05:19):
Marshfield, massachusetts.
Ashley said this was a wildlychallenging hilly course Full of
shade.
That helps because it was kindof warm and sunny up in
Massachusetts on Saturday.
They ran out of water at milenine.
To me that's unforgivable, gang.

(02:05:42):
You ever been in a race thatran out of water on the course?

Speaker 6 (02:05:45):
I have.
Yeah, I have too.
I was glad that I had my own.

Speaker 3 (02:05:49):
I don't take my own ever and they ran out at one
stop, only at one stop, the StPetersburg half, which is
normally a wonderfully run event, and I understand they had
water after that, but they ranout.
However.
They ran out at mile nine heremade the back half of the course
kind of difficult.
She didn't make her A goal, which was the heat, but she did

(02:06:10):
run fast enough for a new proofof time she's going to use at
Wine and Dine.

She had six Disney runningfriends who met her up at this

(02:06:32):
island in Northern Michigan forthis 8.2 mile run right around
the perimeter of the island.
It just circles the island.
Brooke and Nicole did theirfirst eight miler, so there's
two PRs.
Debbie, another friend, haddone it, but she PR'd by 13

(02:06:55):
minutes.
We had a couple of Liz'sLizelle and Liz M and Colleen
all completed the coursetogether, waterfront all the way
, since you're circling anisland.
So it was a beautiful race, nice job.
In Erie, pennsylvania, michelleparticipated in the 12th and

(02:07:20):
last Barber National InstituteBeast of the Bay Spartan-style
race, a 10-miler with 30obstacles, including some in
cold Lake Erie.
There were swamps, there werewalls to get over.
You finish it off runningthrough a wave pool with the

(02:07:43):
waves turned on.
It sounds like fun, michelle.
This race benefits children andadults with special needs and
is even an adaptive course forrunners with disabilities.
So, michelle, good for you, congratulations on finishing
that one.

While several of our burdenedhand runners flew in and or out
of Philadelphia but not onSaturday, and I know you weren't
doing it because on SaturdaySean was busy running a 5k on
the way in Philadelphia.
It was cool seeing planes takeoff and land while he was

(02:08:28):
running.

Speaker 5 (02:08:35):
Now what I hope to stay on theme for a Philadelphia
airport themed race is that Ihope it took him at least an
hour to get his gear check bag.
Because, if there is, one thingthat Philadelphia is synonymous
for it's taking forever at thebaggage claim, so that would be
a very fitting gesture.

Speaker 3 (02:08:47):
Cheesesteaks and slow baggage.
Claim.
You got that right.
Yeah, it is.
Could have lost the luggage too.
All right, let's move to Sunday.
The Hoot Half Marathon and 10KTrail Race took place in lewis,
central ohio.
Carrie did this.
One trail race had lots ofrocks, roots, rope, tree stumps,

(02:09:12):
fallen trees and scenic views, and she took a couple of falls.
At the start the announcer saidthat this was mostly single
file running.
He wasn't wrong.
Carrie fell five times and cuther hand on the last fall.
A shout out to Coach Tom, whowe were just talking with,

(02:09:34):
because Carrie thinks all thestrength training helped her out
and she can't imagine how muchworse it would have been if she
hadn't been doing that.
Definitely earned her medal anda third place age group finish.
Good job, carrie.
In Renton Washington, jessicaran the Rave Green 5K with her

(02:09:55):
two children her sister and hersister's oldest child.
Her kid may have beat her, butshe says she got some bonus time
for having her 20 mile or twodays before.
Yeah, a little tough to go todo a 5K.
Her biggest win was that shefelt great at the end and both

(02:10:18):
her kids asked to sign up for it.
They got there and they ran therace without complaining.
Jessica, on a future episodeyou can come and tell us how you
pulled that off.
In Danville, indiana, kathy didthe fair on the square.
5k Temps in the low 50s at thestart, wow.

(02:10:41):
In Indiana, okay, a lot of thecourse was shaded.
I'd be freezing, I'd be cold, kathy, but it was nice.
Sure, it felt great.
What made it extra special wasthat she was starting at the
same time that horizon runfamily was starting in cal at
the Disneyland race.

(02:11:02):
She kind of felt the Ohana vibeand not leaving out those in
Burden Hand, they started about45 minutes earlier.
So yeah, kathy, you had the twocoasts and you were repping in
the middle of the country.
Good for you.

(02:11:29):
In South Haven, mississippi, erin ran the DC 5K and set for
her a new 5K PR.

Hot and humid, but flat beach, hot, humid, south Florida no

(02:11:53):
surprises there.
Up in Hampton, new Hampshire, mike did the Seafood Fest 5K A
soggy morning.
Now Mike said he is so gladthat he listened to what is now
last week's episode of the Riseand Run podcast because the what

(02:12:15):
would Alicia do segmentmotivated him to accept the
soggy, rainy weather and get outthere and run, despite the
weather and the race start andfinish being on the sand.
He only missed a PR by threeseconds, which was not what he
expected.

(02:12:35):
He hasn't run in almost a month.
He thinks he might sign up foranother local race now just to
chase that PR, mike.
Good job, alicia.
Good job, alicia, good job.
Look what you did.

Speaker 6 (02:12:44):

positively and I think that youshould go and get that PR and go
and try for another race.
