Speaker 1 (00:19):
Well, it's time for
Road Adventures with Cycling Men
of Leisure, the podcast forcyclists who understand that
riding is not just about gettingto the destination, but the
experience along the way.
Now here are the originalCycling Men of Leisure Adam and
Michael.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Welcome to Road
Adventures of Cycling Men of
Leisure.
Once again, as usual, I am Adamand with me, as usual, lucky
for me, virtually in centraltime zone Mr Michael Sharp.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Thank you very much,
Adam.
Happy to be here.
How you doing.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Good, good, good.
Hey man, we've got a newpresident.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
We do.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
We don't know who it
is, because we're recording this
before, but somebody.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
Well, maybe we've got
a new president.
I was going to say maybe itcould still be in the courts or
whatever.
The hanging Chad, that's right,we have went to the election
booth to vote for a newpresident.
How about we just leave it atthat?
Speaker 2 (01:15):
We'll leave it at
that and we'll see what happens.
Yeah, so for those of youjoining us on YouTube, michael,
what do you think of my newpiece of Western wear?
Well, I guess you got to wearsomething, ladies and gentlemen,
it is a DeBrim t-shirt from theDeBrim company and I'll let
(01:40):
Michael get his words in andI'll tell you all about it.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
You know I have tried
because friends don't let
friends wear DeBrim but I'vedone everything I could to try
to keep you from doing this.
Now you've taken it to the nextlevel and now you're wearing
their gear other than the DeBrim.
So I've failed.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
I apologize, but it's
on you now, buddy Melanie, and
Keith, if you are listening tothis, stop what you're doing and
switch over to YouTube.
You'll be so proud.
I have a DeBrim t-shirt on thatsays sun protection.
So a little while back I wrotethe DeBrim company and said hey,
you know, we talk about yourproduct on our show.
(02:22):
Uh, many times.
No, I talk, I, adam talk aboutyour product.
I said that I uh believe in theproduct and my co-host does not
.
Um, and I asked if there wassponsorship, uh, interest.
Um, they very, very nice, wroteback and said listen, we're
just a small, you know company,it's like a side business and we
(02:44):
just don't have the funds to bein a sponsorship.
But could we please send yousome items?
I thought I would do a littleshow and tell.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
So basically, you're
now the unpaid spokesman for
DeBrim.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
That's okay.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
You know what I've
got to sit through it though.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
You do, but sometimes
you just have to help out the
company, the small business.
Yeah, because I had a smallbusiness for 20 years with my
photography and if someone wouldhave done this I would have
been honored, okay, so Terrywrote me a little letter there.
Get that off of there, adam.
Thanks for your support and I'msorry we didn't have a large
(03:29):
shirt so I've sent the closestwe have.
Hope it shrinks a little bit inthe wash.
Cheers and happy pedaling.
Terry from DeBrim.
Now let me show you.
Let me show you and I'llexplain for those of you who are
not willing to go on YouTube.
I got a nice I believe theycall this string bag that says
Debrim, ride cool, stay longer.
(03:50):
Debrimcom.
It's ride cool as in thetemperature, not the.
I look cool.
You can do your own definitionthere, but it's Debrimcom
D-A-B-R-I-Mmcom 510-240-9065.
Okay, also got this classyt-shirt that says the brim.
(04:14):
Obviously, and obviously, michael, we know that you do not
measure up, because I gotmyself measuring yeah, yeah,
yeah.
You know what this is is.
I'm not doing a very good jobof showing it up.
There we go.
What this is is it.
You measure the size, you putyour helmet on and you need a
(04:37):
small to brim If you're 26 to 29and a half inches, or a large
at 29 to 32, can't you just gooff the size of your helmet?
Speaker 3 (04:45):
It fits most for
cycling.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
You got to put your
helmet on, but if you know what
size your helmet is.
Where's that sensor?
Speaker 3 (04:51):
button.
That seems like a needed step.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
That's okay, that's
okay, that's okay, okay.
Also, some officially licensedDebrim post-it notes.
So now, when I write notes forthe show, I'll be, able to show
them off, but not one, not two,not three, but four packs of the
DeBrim, and I like to take alot of notes with our show.
Also a beautiful this is mynext show writing pen right here
(05:19):
DeBrim pen.
It's got a stylus on the end.
So it's nice, because everybodyneeds stylus nowadays and a
nice brochure.
So for those of you who want, just let me know, I could scan
it in and PDF it to you or justgo to DeBrimcom.
It's much easier that way.
Anyways, so I want to thankTerry and DeBrim and yeah, and
(05:44):
now let me say something.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
There is options
other than debrem.
Uh, you can simply usesunscreen and a ball cap.
Carcinogen works.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
You should be wearing
sunscreen at any time when
you're outside carcinogen it'snot a if anyone's ever been with
me, they know I wear arms andyou know even when you're out
mowing the grass.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
No, well, that's what
I'm saying.
The sun's out, you should bedoing it, he learned a new word
carcinogen.
He doesn't know what it means, but he likes to just throw it
out there because it makes himsound scientifically smart.
It's carcinogen.
There we go.
Bourbon Carcinogen.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Don't say that, don't
say that.
Well, listen, I just wanted toget that out there and I want to
thank the Brim Company andTerry for her hospitality and
wonderful, wonderful gifts thatthey sent me.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
If we're going to be,
doing this we need that little
disclaimer that the stuff saidby Adam is not a reflection of
co-host Michael's opinions or hedoes not support it, that kind
of thing.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
In all truthfulness,
what you just said is absolutely
true.
I know you're joking, but Ihave to say this because I watch
a lot of YouTube, a lot ofreviews on electronic products
and things.
To be fair.
Debrim did deny me asponsorship.
They just sent me some items.
My review is only my own reviewfrom the product.
I enjoy wearing the Debrim.
(07:12):
It's kind of become my imagethrough our show and people
always say I was able to findyou because of your hat.
I'm sure they're probablythinking you're silly hat, but
that's okay.
I'm a man enough to admit thatwhile I almost gave it away once
on a ride, I have since had itwith me it came back.
It came back.
Anyways, melanie and Keith, listen if you're looking for
(07:37):
some post-it notes or something.
I'm just kidding.
So, anyways, I digress, we'llmove forward.
So yes, the Brim did not pay me, did not want a sponsorship,
but they did send me this and Ithink it's a beautiful product.
So, okay, what?
Speaker 3 (07:54):
have?
We got substantial on this show.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Oh my gosh,
Substantial.
I mean it's a pretty big hat,it's pretty substantial, All
right.
So I've been doing somethinking.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
The show's going even
worse now.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
No, no, no the brim.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
now Adam's thinking.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Oh, dear, I think
you're going to like this.
Okay, I really do so.
It's not a secret that I likepodcasts not just making one
with you, which I highly enjoy,by the way, but I enjoy podcasts
in my normal life.
I've, ever since my healthjourney and working out, and
most, if not all, I usually havesome sort of either true crime
(08:37):
or technology podcast to how todo some cool stuff on our show.
And I listened to our show andI was listening to the Maria
Parker interview again because Ifound it so inspiring and I
said that phrase that I alwayssay our listeners and it got me
thinking.
We need a name for our peoplewho not only watch us but listen
(09:03):
to us, and I think we needsomething to call them by.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
Are we talking about
the DeBrimwares or the regular?
Speaker 2 (09:13):
people, no, no, no.
The DeBrimwares are like me,keith and Melanie.
I mean, let's be honest, butI'm talking about people who
watch us on YouTube.
So if they're watching, they'renot listeners.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
I mean, they're
probably listening or reading.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
Maybe they're at work
and they're not supposed to be
watching us, so they read thecaptions, which is good for you.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
So what do you want
to call them?
What's your ideas?
I have an idea.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
I knew you did.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
My idea would be our
leisure community, our leisure
community, okay even, so much sothat, if you are watching on
youtube right now, I even made agraphic for it.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Look at that wow,
okay, I can go with that okay,
look that Because.
I have busted you more thanonce on the.
We have three people other thanlisteners.
Yes, but yeah, guilty, no, I'mgood with that.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
So and you know what
I listen to?
Not all the time, but I listento a little bit of the Kelsey
podcast and they call theirlisteners the 92 percenters
their listeners the 92percenters.
And and I that's kind of justto be truthful, where I got the
idea like we need a name forpeople who who are at home, who
(10:32):
enjoy our uh, shenanigans.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
So now I I think
that's cool our leisure
community all right, cool, perfect, that works all right,
you've already made the graphics.
Yeah, well, I mean listen hours.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
I didn't take me
hours, hours, it took me Just
kidding.
Once you know how to dosomething, it's pretty quick to
throw something together.
Well, in that case, we haveheard from a lot of our leisure
community and I have someupdates.
Let's hear it First one prettysimple to the point.
Let's hear it.
(11:03):
First.
One pretty simple to the point.
Our friend Keith, who wears aDebrim, says great interview
with Maria Parker and I justwanted to mention that Our
friend Luke said hello.
The at Mr Nash text man saysgreat show guys Really enjoyed
(11:25):
the interview with Maria.
It was a pleasure meeting you.
Adam at the Tour de Livingston.
Oh yeah, that's right, we rodetogether.
When I bought my cruise bike,v20 Vendetta, I was also looking
at another recumbent brand.
Being a lifelong upright riderand being in my 60s, my neck,
shoulder et cetera told me itwas time for a change.
Never been on a recumbent andnot knowing anyone who had, I
(11:48):
was flying blind.
That was until I watched theHope documentary with Maria.
In this movie you meet Maria, her husband Jim, her children,
her company, the love for hersister and determination and you
get to see how the vendettaperforms.
I was sold, still writing Lovethe vendetta.
Thanks again, guys.
Really great interview.
Hope to see you at Ragbri.
(12:11):
Our friend Scott Garwickinterviewed a friend, and not
only a friend, but now a monthlydonation supporter says hey
there, adam and Michael Justwant to tell you, guys what a
great interview you had withMaria Parker, one of your best,
in my opinion.
She was an amazing athlete anda wonderful ambassador for not
(12:33):
only cruise bike but therecumbent cycling in general.
I followed her and Jim onYouTube for several years and
just loved them both and cruisebike what a fantastic and fast
machine.
I would own one in a heartbeatif I didn't already have four
bands anyway.
Maybe that's a brand ofrecumbent, I apologize.
Thanks for having her on yourshow.
(12:54):
I loved it.
By the way, my wife Sue listensto your podcast too and really
enjoys it.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
Now let me just say
yes, sir.
Everybody's like oh, you guys, they loved that interview with
Maria, but I think we're gettingtoo much credit.
I mean, when you have somebodywho's a good interviewee and has
really good stories and thatkind of thing, you can be a
mediocre interviewer and youstill get a good interview as
(13:23):
far as I'm concerned.
So I mean most of the creditI'm going to give to Maria
because she had great stories, great presence.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
So I would agree.
After 54 episodes we're gettingbetter and better.
But yeah, she definitely wasthe star.
I just wanted to show theDeBrim here just real quick,
didn't want to, didn't want tomiss out on that.
I just wanted to show theDeBrim here just real quick,
(13:51):
didn't want to miss out on that.
I don't want to jump tolistener spotlight yet.
But did we get any newcountries on the map?
Speaker 3 (13:55):
I am happy to say we
did indeed get some new
countries on the map, and Iwould like to welcome New
Zealand, Poland and Kenya.
Okay good New listeners fromthose three locations.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Well, good, because I
kind of walked you into a trap,
Because at Audax underscorewriter says great podcast.
Greetings from Poland, guys.
Now that great podcast waslisted on the Maria interview.
So the question is is it ourpodcast that he likes, or was it
(14:30):
just the Maria interview?
Speaker 3 (14:32):
Eh, that's your own
when there's nobody around to
dispute it, we'll go withpodcast.
How about that?
Speaker 2 (14:38):
All right, perfect.
Hey, we have what I would loveto now consider a friend of the
show.
You write us this many timesyou're a friend, okay, at Matt
Robinson he says for Michael, who also referred to as Mark, to
return the favor.
Sorry, my Soda Springs guest acouple of episodes back was a
(15:01):
super medium.
From Soda Springs you can alsosee wyoming and utah.
It was settled way before idahobecame a state, was a stop on
the oregon trail, saw growth todue to the lumber, especially
after the civil war.
But not name for a trader ornothing to do with tv stuff.
I ruled out dubuque because itwas mostly a key trading post.
(15:24):
Mining came later.
Also, dubuque was big in themanufacturing and meatpacking,
especially transportation, because of the return on
investment.
Okay, fine, the coax cablething was the biggest miss for
me.
Well done, we'll also enjoyyour twisted clues.
Cue the voice modification.
(15:44):
Listener Spotlight, Look atthat?
Speaker 3 (15:48):
What do you mean?
Twisted cues?
Speaker 2 (15:51):
He likes the clues
Excuse me, he likes the clues
that you give.
He's saying they're twisted.
He also has a guess for when weget to Listener Spotlight.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
I have one more.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
One more from our
leisure community.
That's a little-known gentlemanwho we also consider a major
friend of the show has beenawesome to us.
Executive director of Bragorg,franklin Johnson.
Yep, so we have been in contactand last year we did a new
(16:31):
year's day, um breaking down theroute show with him, and I am
proud to say, ladies andgentlemen, that is happening
again.
Um, he has agreed to do thatwith us Awesome.
So we consider him not only afriend, but also enjoy doing the
(16:52):
ride.
We are going back to Bragg 2025, big Bragg.
Go to Braggorg, check it out.
When you sign up there, you canactually, on the registration,
click Cycling Men and Women ofLeisure, and we already know we
have 10, so we'll have a jerseyand so we are hoping to have
another large team, and soplease join us.
(17:14):
So, franklin, I just want tosay thank you for agreeing to do
that again.
That'll be good, so that'll begood.
So I believe that's all of my,besides the guests for listener
spotlight when you're ready.
From our leisure community.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
All right.
The clues that I gave you forthe last episode's listener
spotlight were as follows.
In the mid 1850s, whitesettlers moved into the area due
to the mineral springs.
It is known for its largeamount of recreational
(17:54):
opportunities In the late 50s.
If you were seriously intoscience and or physics, this
town's high school would havebeen the place that you would
have wanted to go to school.
And if you don't drivecarefully in this town, you
(18:14):
might end up in the side of thefeed store well, ladies and
gentlemen, it is now time for anofficial listener spotlight
guess.
Speaker 2 (18:28):
Our friend Matt not
Mark Matt says I guess
Huntsville Alabama is all theNASA stuff there Fits the
Mineral Springs thing, specifically big spring feeds.
The town has tons ofrecreational stuff, especially
for cyclists was settled bywhite settlers earlier than
(18:49):
1850s.
But let's not the details getin the way of a good story.
So our friend Matt has guessedHuntsville Alabama.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
Huntsville, Alabama.
That is not correct.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
Sorry, Matt.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
Hey, listen, matt.
At least he called you by yourname.
Speaker 3 (19:11):
I got it right this
time, that's a plus.
All right, it's not St Louiseither, adam, so just so you
know.
Do you want to know where it is?
Of course we are talking aboutthe town of Pagosa.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
Wait, ed already
heard it, because Ed's listening
at 1.6.
Okay, go ahead.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
Pagosa Springs,
Colorado.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
Pagosa Springs.
I am so intrigued by the feed, the running into the feed.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
Let me explain how I
got to this.
It's known for a large amountof recreational opportunities
fishing, rafting, hiking,hunting.
The local ski resort there isthe Wolf Creek ski area because
it sits just below Wolf CreekPass in the late 50s.
This is a good one, FrankOppenheimer.
You know who he was.
Oh yeah, I just watched a greatmovie uh helped develop, you
(20:07):
know, the atomic bomb, that kindof thing.
Well, uh, during the red scarein this country, he was branded
a communist uh and was no longerable to find work.
Uh, basically, what he was ableto do is he was able to get a
job as a high school teacher.
Can you believe this?
Frank Oppenheimer did all thisgreat stuff and now he's
(20:30):
teaching high school in the 50s,from like 57 to 60, in Pagosa
Springs, colorado.
Can you imagine being like oneof his science students?
It's like, here's FrankOppenheimer teaching me about
science and physics.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
Hey kids, we have a
science experiment.
Speaker 3 (20:48):
Fortunately in the
60s and stuff.
Then he was able to, you know, kind of get back in good with
that whole thing.
I mean it's kind of a sad story, but that would have been cool
to go to high school and be inhis class.
Here's the big one.
I thought somebody out therewould get this.
If you don't drive carefully inthis town you might end up in
the side of a feed store.
(21:10):
This was the one that I thoughtsomeone would catch on.
There is an artist, big back in1975, by the name of CW McCall.
Cw and you're probably notfamiliar with him.
But CW McCall, and you'reprobably not familiar with him,
but CW McCall played, did a lotof songs about truckers.
In fact, one of his songs, convoy, ended up as a movie with
(21:34):
Chris Christopherson and ErnestBorgnine in it.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
Why didn't you tell
me I would have got a sound clip
?
I know the Convoy song.
Speaker 3 (21:41):
Yeah, we're going to
have a convoy.
Exactly, man clip.
I know the convoy song yeahwe're gonna have a convoy
exactly, man.
Um, but that's not the song I'mreferencing.
He did another song called wolfcreek pass.
Wolf creek, pass upon the greatdivide, trucking on down the
other side.
The last little bit of the songtalks about how they're going
on the backside of wolf creekpass.
His buddy steps on the brakes.
(22:03):
There are no brakes, they comebarreling in.
And the last two sentences ofthe song is they slammed into
the side of a feed store indowntown pegosa springs well,
that's because everybody waswatching bbj the bear, bj and
the bear yeah oh, yeah, that was.
There was a lot of trucker.
(22:24):
Uh yeah, I can't think of whatthe other one was, but yeah, bj
and the bear and there wasanother one run had semis in it
too.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
It was like it was a
whole, the whole, you know, uh,
whole theme there with trucksyeah trains and mama.
Oh wait, sorry, in the rain Igot off on a tangent, it was all
all.
Speaker 3 (22:43):
So yeah, trucking was
big in 75 and early 80s, and
all that.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
What do you think of
my new listener spotlight
graphic?
I like it, see.
I'm kind of enjoying thegraphic.
That's right, pagoda Springs, huh, pagosa, pagosa.
Sorry about that.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
Pagoda are those
buildings in Japan, but Pagosa
Springs, huh, pagosa, pagosa.
Sorry about that.
Pagoda Springs, pagoda arethose buildings in Japan, but
Pagosa Springs yeah.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
Oh yeah, when I get
my Chinese.
I haven't had Chinese in solong.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
But what was
interesting is also, this
community has a large amount ofits downtown areas actually fed
by geothermal energy.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
That's cool yeah.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
I've been there many
times.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
Beautiful little town
, skied at wolf creek pass so
that's something I've never donea ski well, that's not true.
I did cross-country skiing, butit's not the same.
I didn't have insurance for awhile because I was afraid to.
Speaker 3 (23:39):
I was afraid to ski
uh, that was like a long time
ago.
It's been a lot of time betweennow and then.
Speaker 2 (23:47):
I was going to say
I've had insurance for the last
15 years, but there was a timebefore that where I worked at a
job where then it was likeindependent contractor and I
said I want to risk it.
Speaker 3 (23:57):
You were young, I
could afford it.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
All right.
Well, ladies and gentlemen, once again that has been
Listener Spotlight.
Thank you to all of ourlisteners.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
In Pagosa Springs,
Colorado.
Speaker 2 (24:12):
See, I didn't pause
like last week when you said
Ohio, you know, although I didwatch Colorado football there
for a while, so I wanted to seehow that was going to work out.
But I bet they're going to goback to the drilling board
anyways.
Um, perfect, perfect, perfect.
Uh, I assume, per usual, youhave something for the end of
(24:36):
the show I do have something forthe end of the show.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
Perfect, I get to
play with that graphic again,
then you do.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
Indeed, in that case,
we'll move the graphic and we
have the brim.
All right.
So let's get rocking androlling here.
Speaker 3 (24:52):
What do we got going
on now?
Speaker 2 (24:54):
Something small to me
and you, but I wanted to
mention it in case those who Imentioned the word RAGBRAI
before, but RAGBRAI releasedtheir logo and you know what?
Speaker 3 (25:03):
It's the best one.
I love it I love it.
Go ahead it is the best one, since I believe it was 2018
screaming eagle and I shouldhave had a screaming eagle sound
.
Speaker 2 (25:17):
That would have been
good, but I would agree.
Uh, if you look at this logo, first of all it's it's RAGBRAI
52.
So in the logo they put like asilhouette image of the B-52.
Looks like it's on the side ofa riveted plane.
And check it out.
Go to RAGBRAIcom.
They're showing it and I knowyou and I have decided once
(25:40):
again for 2025 that we are goingto look at something else.
There's a few rides that are inour in our planning stages that
we're looking at.
Some may not be a week long, some may.
So we'll we'll announce thosewhen we get closer and willing
to discuss that, um, but we aredoing the week long big brag.
But anyways, go to brag bragcom.
Speaker 3 (26:01):
We wanted to mention
it because we we talked about
Ragbri before and we mightactually I mean it's early we
might actually try to dosomething around their
announcement as well.
So we'll see?
Speaker 2 (26:15):
Yeah for sure.
But Jack, I could see the logoyou know, being on like a jersey
and being on like T-shirts andstuff.
I really believe in it.
It's a great logo.
Speaker 3 (26:23):
They've had some weak
logos the last couple of years.
Speaker 1 (26:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
I mean, even like the
50th wasn't great, Although the
goat jersey was really good.
But you know what?
Here's what I want to know.
Speaker 1 (26:34):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (26:35):
Entertainment one
night.
Think they'll try to get theB-52s.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
You know, I could
bust out my love shack.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
That would fit the
theme beautifully.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
It would actually
Just throwing it out there,
we'll see.
Maybe you just stole Matt'sthunder.
Sorry, matt, hope he listens.
He's got his own podcast, justGo Bike podcast.
Hope he listens to us.
Still, he's been on a coupletimes, so you never know.
Actually, when we were there hewas extremely supportive, so
(27:08):
very, very much so.
Uh, he wouldn't recognize menow, but um.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
Yeah, he would.
You're still wearing that toBrim.
Speaker 2 (27:16):
Oh man, oh ouch, oh
ow.
Let me pull the sword out.
I hope you didn't twist it.
It's in the back, not the front.
Was it the tri one that doesn'theal?
Speaker 3 (27:27):
That's right, yeah.
Speaker 2 (27:29):
See, I have some
military knowledge.
Let's see here.
You have been at work being awebsite designer you want to
talk about that, I think, designer is a bit over the top.
Hey, hey hey, hey, you got tosell it, my friend, you're right
.
You're exactly right there.
Speaker 3 (27:47):
I've been doing some
website design and, if people
are interested, we've added somenew content and some new pages
to our website I've updated.
There's a page on our websitethat talks about all sorts of
different activities we've done,be it cycling, be it breweries,
we've been to distilleries, cultural things like the Ford
(28:07):
Museum in Michigan and thingslike that and just kind of a big
list of things that the cyclingmen of leisure have in fact
done or participated in.
I've updated that for this lastyear and then I've also added
another page.
Speaker 2 (28:20):
This is what I'm
excited about.
I love when you have like a few.
I mean, you're a family man andI know that your life is
probably Well.
Actually, I've seen yourcalendar inside your fridge and,
besides someone putting theirhand out for money, I'm sure
you're usually busier than aone-armed paper hanger, but this
(28:41):
was really cool and I want tolet you talk about it.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
What was this one
actually?
Speaker 2 (28:47):
Oh come on Listener
Spotlight.
Speaker 3 (28:53):
I just wanted to hear
you do the thing.
What I've done is I havecreated a page that pays homage
to every town community that hasbeen highlighted on the
listener spotlight I thought itwas really cool myself so, uh,
periodically I'll be updating it, but right now it's updated up
(29:14):
to pagosa springs.
Pagosa springs isn't on there,so if you ever want to know if
your community has beenhighlighted in in, uh, that
segment, you'll be able to go onthere and look.
What line is St Louis and itcould help you out if you were
one to try to guess and go.
Well, I think it's.
I think it's Pagosa Springs,and you're like nope, they've
(29:34):
already done Pagosa Springs, soit's not that one.
Speaker 2 (29:37):
What line is St Louis
on that webpage?
Speaker 3 (29:45):
St Louis is not on
that webpage, because here's my
problem.
I have thought about putting StLouis out there and I think I
think no disrespect to you haveall the respect and love for you
in the world, man, but nodisrespect, I think I can fool
you on St Louis.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
You probably can, but
I haven't done.
Speaker 3 (29:58):
St Louis, because I
don't you know, it's.
Speaker 1 (30:01):
Cause, then it
wouldn't be fun.
Speaker 3 (30:02):
You're very familiar
with it and I didn't want to
make you look like you know I.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
I think I think
everyone out there needs to know
that I I lived very close tothat for many, many, many years
and so my father was at scottair force base in belva,
illinois, and then, um, when Iwas in scouting, we would go to
st louis and do all kinds ofstuff, and then, when I became a
teenager with a little freedom,he would trust me and I would
drop him off at Scott Air ForceBase in Illinois and take the 11
(30:28):
mile drive into St Louis and meand my buddies would go to,
like, the science center anddowntown.
Speaker 3 (30:33):
And you'd hang out at
the riverboat McDonald's.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
Oh yeah, back in the
day when the McDonald's was
there and they used to have ahappy meal back in the day.
Obviously I didn't need to eatit, but uh, that was actually a
riverboat and it was kind ofcool because you could take the
top like a little like lightplastic box.
Yeah we'd go up in the arch andso a lot of history.
And so I want.
That's why, like when you gavea few episodes back, like the
(30:57):
french connection, I'm like, ohman, two rivers french, I'm in,
but uh, I was obviously wrong.
Speaker 3 (31:04):
Well, for the people
that don't know, hasn't been
there for several years, butback in the day McDonald's had a
riverboat.
It was a literally riverboat.
Not like you know, we're in ariverboat casino.
We've just suspended thebuilding over the river.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
This was actually a
riverboat on the river
McDonald's and it was a big oldMcDonald's on this riverboat and
it sat, just if I remembercorrectly, like adjacent to like
, where the the arch was yeah, yeah, yeah, you could actually
just like walk down to the riverand then right along there was
like a ramp, dock, if you will, and then you could go on, and
(31:39):
then you sat on the riverboat, you, you know, whatever you know
, upstairs, downstairs, and then, but yeah, it was a real live
operating McDonald's.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
What I would have
done is I would have you know, I
would have just floated it upand down the river.
We're stopping in St Louis fortwo weeks.
Speaker 2 (31:57):
Now, you just made a
mention of something I got to.
This is going to show my age,but you just said that riverboat
casino, how they just put it upand say it's a riverboat.
Speaker 3 (32:10):
Now I know when we go
to Riggers Bayou, that's how
your quote unquote riverboat isthere.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
Oh, absolutely yeah.
But when I was young inMetropolis Illinois, the boat
actually would go out for alittle bit and come back, and
then people started complainingbecause they're like, well, if I
lose my money in five minutes,I'm stuck on this big boat ride.
And then they had weatherissues and stuff.
And then they had a riverboatcruise where it would be like
the cruise leaves at 1 o'clock,3 o'clock, 5 o'clock, but really
(32:35):
it never went anywhere and so,yes, so you were just on the
boat.
Yeah, I used to.
Yeah, it was kind of neat andhere's a little bit of history
that you don't know about me.
So my uncle bought well, not,no, no, he worked with the
Historical Society and they hada caboose and they turned the
(32:58):
caboose into a restaurant calledthe Hungry Hobo.
So someone out there is goingto be like I ate at the Hungry
Hobo.
It was a caboose that wasturned into a chicago hot dogs,
chicago style hot dog.
Uh, stand, that was rightoutside the casino.
And my uncle hired me duringthe summer when I was home from
military school andunfortunately it was a failing
(33:19):
business because people, hethought for sure people would
want to come from the casino andget a hot dog and go back on
and gamble.
But nope, they just walkedright by, they just wanted to go
on that boat and gamble.
So, but it was, I had a lot ofItalian beefs and I had a lot of
hot dogs, but yeah, that's alittle history right there.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
That's cool.
He failed to understand how thecasinos you know pretty much
lock the doors once you get inthere and try to keep you from
going out.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
But that's cool.
Speaker 3 (33:48):
The hungry hobo.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
Yeah, and then it was
pretty neat.
And then, of course, theyclosed up shop and then I hadn't
been there in a while.
And then I went back to thearea to visit some friends and
family and they said do you wantto go down to the casino?
And I said, what time does theboat go out?
(34:10):
And they all looked at me likeI had 14, like I was wearing a
de brim because I um, they'relike you can go anytime you want
.
And I was like what are youtalking about?
And then the riverboat casino,uh, casino queen, I think, in st
louis or on the other side itused to go up and down and
across from that McDonald'syou're talking about, and it
doesn't go anywhere either.
And then when we came by youyou live in the Kansas City area
(34:31):
we went to Jay Rieger'sdistillery.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
It's just right
across from the river and I said
does that?
Speaker 2 (34:39):
one go out and you're
like, no, it doesn't move.
Speaker 3 (34:43):
So, anyway, it just
dangles over the water and we
call it a riverboat.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
So, anyways, there's
a little history that you didn't
know about me.
Where in Chicago was thisrestaurant?
Do you remember it was inMetropolis Illinois.
Oh, okay, Very south, rightacross from Paducah, Kentucky.
Oh.
Speaker 3 (35:00):
I'm familiar with.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
Paducah and
Metropolis is St Louis, where
Superman was supposedly from.
Metropolis had a big Supermanstatue there.
So very southern Illinois.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
Because I just looked
up there is a Hungry Hobo
restaurant, but it is currentlyin Rock Island Illinois.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
Well, so there we go.
Maybe they moved the caboose.
I'm just kidding.
Speaker 3 (35:20):
Maybe someone else
thought you know what?
We're going to put a restaurantout in front of the casino
there in.
Speaker 2 (35:26):
Rock Island.
Yeah it was kind of sad itdidn't work out because he
invested a lot of time andenergy, but it's okay Things
work out.
Speaker 3 (35:36):
He had a dream.
Sometimes those don't work outfor us.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
He always would tell
me something funny and then
we'll move on with the show.
He would always say he said oneday I'm gonna be rich and I
said, oh yeah.
And he said and I'll omit someof the language that he would
use he said, uh, one of myrichest relatives is gonna leave
me something, or I'm gonna hitthe lottery.
And he would say I'm blankbecause I don't have any rich
relatives and I don't play thelottery well, you know he was
(36:05):
optimistic, though I canappreciate that.
I want to mention something, because we are gathering stories
for Encounters with Cars.
So our friend Matt not MarkMatt gave us an idea for Sorry,
I had to have a little fun.
You can have fun at my DeBrandexpense Gave us an idea for this
(36:30):
segment and we were hoping togather a few.
We do have a couple, but wewould like to get a couple more.
So if you've had an incidentwith a car good, bad or
otherwise maybe somebody wasyour savior, like Matt's story,
or maybe somebody was a realpiece of you know what Piece of
work yeah, tell us, we want tohear about it.
(36:51):
We're going to highlight acouple of those on a segment for
the show.
I would like to tease our nextshow.
Do you want to take this one ordo you want me to do it?
Oh I got this one, okay, perfect.
Speaker 3 (37:04):
Our next show.
We are happy to announce thatour next show is going to be
road adventures with cycling men.
Of leisure's annual cyclingchristmas wish list I love it.
Speaker 2 (37:22):
Last time was a hit
which turned out that not only
did you record the show, butyour wife listened and bought
you a couple things I know shedid.
Wait a minute.
Do you have self-interest inthis?
I'm just kidding.
Speaker 3 (37:36):
Yeah, let's.
Hmm, what do I put out there?
Yeah, no, last year we did it.
It was a lot of fun.
Adam came up with some on hisown, I came up with some on my
own, and we just shared themback and forth.
You know, we had all sorts ofthings, from bike computers to
collapsible helmets, to littlebobblehead cyclists, things like
(37:56):
that.
So it was a lot of fun andwe're going to do it this year.
I've already I can't speak forAdam, but already have some
great ideas lined up andbasically it's just to provide
possible ideas for anybody outthere who wants to shop for
their favorite cyclist.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
You know what Terry
should have?
Gave me A code for DeBrim.
That would be a phenomenalChristmas present.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
No, I'll show you a
good Christmas present Right
here, ladies and gentlemen.
Oh no, I'll show you a goodChristmas present Right here,
ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 2 (38:29):
Uh-oh.
Speaker 3 (38:30):
I don't think you've
seen this Is that a bobblehead.
It is the Cycling Men ofLeisure bobblehead.
When did you get that?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's got thelittle Cycling.
Speaker 1 (38:41):
Men of.
Speaker 2 (38:42):
Leisure logo.
I see our logo there.
Speaker 3 (38:43):
And it's supposed to
look like me.
It does.
Speaker 2 (38:47):
On a bike If you were
a presidential vice president.
Speaker 3 (38:52):
And this was one of
the ideas that I had last year.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
I never saw that.
Speaker 3 (38:57):
You never saw this.
Well, no, but then I didn'tmake my annual mecca to the
Kansas City area, my annualMecca to the Kansas City area
and it says Merry Christmas toour number one dad right there
on the little thing.
But yeah, how cool is that.
Speaker 2 (39:12):
Well, what if they
were giving it to me?
I'm just kidding.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
Well, I'm just
kidding, that's cool.
I just marked out the dad partand just said the number one.
That's pretty cool you likethat.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
Yeah, that's cool and
that's exactly how you wear
your glasses when we go into atown.
So I think did they take apicture of you and send it in.
Speaker 3 (39:30):
My wife had a picture
of me and sent it in and, like
I said, the logo is actually thelogo.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
I see it.
Yeah, that's awesome.
Speaker 3 (39:41):
Yeah, that is how I
wear my glasses.
I mean, most of the time when Iget on the road going my
glasses are still there.
I have to stop and take themoff.
Speaker 2 (39:48):
Or I order for you at
a restaurant, because you've
left them.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
Yeah, I can't see
they could have moved the
hairline up a little bit, butit's kind of cool.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
Oh, they just give
you honorable mention, that's
awesome.
I'll let you set that downcarefully.
Speaker 3 (40:04):
Don't drop that so
that was.
Speaker 1 (40:08):
That's good.
Speaker 3 (40:08):
That was one of the
many the many things that that
we reviewed last year, or didn'treview, but we suggested so and
you talked about the psi pluspump and we end up using that
which was an a plus plus.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
Your foldable helmet
that you got on the christmas
list was a huge hit and everyoneevery time you take that off
and you'd fold it you weren'teven trying to be like I'm going
to fold this so people see it.
No, I was just going to justput it up and people would just
stop you in mid-sentence.
Did you just fold that up?
How?
Speaker 3 (40:36):
does that work, and I
showed it to dozens of people
the foldable helmet by Fenn.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
But I, throughout the
year have been.
Did they give us a?
I mean, you jumped on me formentioning the brand.
Speaker 3 (40:48):
You mentioned the
family name, the company name
just kidding, yeah, but I'm notwearing their thing and uh
promoting their phone number andall that the brimcom
d-a-b-r-i-Mcom.
Oh yeah, I'm just kidding.
This last year as I've cameacross things.
(41:09):
I've been making a list and sonext episode we'll be going
through that list to see whatwe've got.
Adam doesn't know what I haveon my list.
I don't know what's on Adam's.
That kind of keeps it.
We like to do that because thenit's like you know, it just
keeps it more exciting becausewe don't know what each other is
going to pull out of the bagthere and suggest.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
Just like listener
spotlight, if anyone's ever
curious.
If Michael really does give methe answers, I've actually A I
don't think he would, but B I'veactually many times said don't
tell me.
And when we're doing show prepI will read the guest to him.
Whoever has sent in the guest.
I'm like don't answer this, just in case you know, because a
lot of times he's helping hisdaughter with homework or
(41:49):
something.
I usually say don't tell me.
But this was the guess, andonly one time, and all the times
we're doing that all you saidwas yeah, that's not even close.
I'm like I don't want to hearthat.
I want to.
I want to experience it withyou.
So, anyways, that will be ournext show, the Cyclist Christmas
(42:10):
Wish List.
So if you want to,hypothetically, after that show
comes out and there's somethingon there you want, just drop the
link to the show to your wife,or significant other or family
member.
Say you might want to listen tothis, which was a win-win for
everybody.
Speaker 3 (42:29):
We get someone to
listen to the show, you get a
new Christmas item, or ifthere's nothing on either of our
lists that you're even remotelyinterested in, drop the link to
your significant other, whatever friend, family member,
and say listen to this and don'tbuy me any of that, because I
don't want it.
It's a win for us.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
For the
non-denominational, just kidding
, all right.
Well, believe it or not, we'vegone on a little bit, had some
fun, which I always have a goodtime doing this.
I actually have some inform, informal information, and, if
you'll uh be willing to hear it,I've got some stuff to tell you
(43:10):
.
Absolutely what do you got?
So I had to put the bike away.
In michigan we've been, youknow, this is what we do every
year we winterize things.
I put the hoses away.
Now it's been in the 30s mostnights, although we're going to
have two days of 70s this week, and then it looks like it's
going to get cooler again and benormal.
While putting the bike away.
(43:31):
It got me thinking.
First of all, as a friend, I'dlike to tease you.
Do you plan on using thePeloton this year, or still hang
sweaters from it?
Speaker 3 (43:41):
I can do both.
Speaker 2 (43:42):
I was going to say
say because mine is right now
currently holding hangers if Iput the hangers on it yeah and I
ride faster.
Speaker 3 (43:48):
Won't they dry
quicker?
Speaker 2 (43:51):
it could, because
yours have a.
Does the peloton have a fansystem like remember the old
days you.
You pull back and forth, yeah, right uh, no, I am horrible.
I have to admit to you something.
I bought the iFit bicycle Ithink it's the S22i is what I
have and it's got a, you know,21-inch monitor, 22-inch monitor
(44:12):
, and you can ride through theHimalayans.
And I always start out greatlike, oh yes, I'm going to do
this.
I even bought the HDMI cable toconnect it to a TV.
Oh, yeah, got to do that.
But you know what, after like10 to 15 minutes, I'm like I'm
bored, this sucks and yes, Iknow exactly what you're talking
(44:33):
about.
I wish I didn't, but I do now,obviously I mean on a
self-loathing health journey.
I'm going to continue that.
I'll do something.
It's just hard for me to sit onthat bike and not go anywhere.
And you know they go to some ofthe most beautiful places.
I'm not sure.
To be honest, I've never beenon a Peloton ever.
(44:55):
I've seen them, we've got thesame thing.
Speaker 3 (44:57):
You can do the timed
rides with the instructor, you
can do just the beautiful rides.
I'm the same way.
After about 15 minutes I'm likethis is boring, even if I'm
like, oh, I'm going throughAruba.
It's like great as long as I'mlooking there.
But as soon as I look up I'mstill in my basement.
It's like well, this is no fun.
But one thing that's helped, Istill have a hard time because I
(45:23):
get bored after 15, 20 minutes, right, okay, and and because
and to be.
I really don't like you know Ican, I'll do a few of them.
Uh, when I'm, you know, doingit on a weekly basis, like once
a week, I'll do the one with theinstructor, hey, let's go.
Oh, you know, get it up towhatever and and all this, but
that just really annoys me aftera while you know, you've been
(45:45):
to my house and you know onewall behind me is where my gym
is at.
Speaker 2 (45:50):
Um, it's a smaller
gym, but you know what?
It's?
Just my wife and I works, we'vegot a treadmill, we've got a
bike, a rower, in there andthere's a big TV on the wall and
so I have an Apple TV box.
And so same thing for me.
If I don't want to watch the, whatever Hawaii or whatever
country we're riding the bike in, then I can turn on the Apple
(46:10):
TV, and it does get a little bitbetter.
Then I can turn on the Apple TVand it does get a little bit
better.
But that got me thinking.
I decided to go down and I wasgoing to do some research and I
have some interesting things toshare with you.
So I went looking and it said Iasked the computer which is
connected to chat, gpt, and Iwanted to know the average time
(46:33):
that someone should train on astationary bike to get the, to
honestly get the best bang foryour buck, like, is there like a
point of excessiveness that isnot really helping you?
Is there a point of what youshould be doing?
Like, should you be riding itconsistently, or high intensity
or moving back and forth.
Like you know, they say Walkershould go, like you know, fast
and slow, or, like you know, runa little bit.
Speaker 1 (46:55):
Shake it up a little
bit yeah.
Speaker 2 (46:57):
So the quick answer
is, it says, for most people the
best amount of time to train ona stationary bike is around 30
minutes per session.
Okay, aiming for about fivedays a week, with the intensity
and duration adjusting based onyour fitness level.
Beginners can start with asession of 10 to 20 minutes
Obviously that means I'm abeginner and gradually
(47:19):
increasing the durations as theyget fitter.
Some key points it saidBeginners could start with 10 to
20 minutes, obviously, butintermediate said you should aim
for 30 to 45 minutes.
But it does clearly say thatyou should have a mix of
moderate and high intensityintervals, which is kind of
funny because if I follow thatIFIT program, usually it's not
(47:43):
that they're going to rideacross you know, they're going
to ride around an island orsomething and there might be a
hill, and sometimes it doesadjust the I'm sure your Peloton
does the same thing but itadjusts the resistance and so
then it comes off, but it's notwhat I would consider high
intensity.
And then there's those who areadvanced, it says, can extend
(48:03):
sessions to an hour or even more, incorporating high-intensity
intervals and varied resistancelevels.
Now I have to tell you that theperson who does a century on a
stationary bike, oh my God.
Yeah, you got to get a newhobby, and I'm just kidding, but
I wanted to do a littlehomework for our leisure
(48:25):
community.
There are many software optionsfor stationary bike riding,
including virtual ridingplatforms, training analysis
apps and apps for planning rides.
Now, to be clear, the pieces ofsoftware that I'm about to
mention is, if you'll pleaserole play with me.
This is a device like if you'regoing to take your bike and
you're going to put it into atrainer not, you and I are first
(48:48):
talking about the iFit and thePeloton, and I'm sure there's
some other brands, I just don'tknow.
Speaker 3 (48:52):
Bicycles and the
computer system all in one unit.
Speaker 2 (48:56):
So these pieces of
software that I'm going to
mention is if you take your bikeand put it into a trainer,
which you can find manydifferent versions, sure, very
basic, to rollers, to whatever.
And so Zwift is an animatedkind of piece of software.
It's a popular training app.
They actually offer a 14-dayfree trial and then, after the
(49:19):
14-day trial, there's a monthlyfee or you can do an annual fee.
Speaker 3 (49:22):
And that's the one
that's competitive where you're
competing, yeah, or it has anoption of being, like a
competitive type thing.
Speaker 2 (49:28):
Yeah, and it's kind
of neat because as you pedal
like you could be in your house,I could be in my house.
We Competitive type thing.
Yeah, and it's kind of neatbecause as you pedal like you
could be in your house, I couldbe in my house.
We could actually link up anddo it at the same time.
I mean, both of our bikeswouldn't go anywhere.
I'm just kidding, but on aserious note, yeah, if you want
to do group rides I mean, someof the shops do group rides we
could actually have a CyclingMen of Leisure, cycling Women of
Leisure group ride on there.
(49:49):
That would be cool.
So, and I have had a Zwiftbefore that has a companion app
that you can put on your phone, and then, of course, I have
projected it on a big 55-inch TVin that room or whatever.
So, which is nothing I saw atCostco they had 100-inch TVs for
(50:17):
what I paid for my 55-inch along time ago they have one
called TrainerRoad, which is anapp that's good for structured
workouts and training.
One call that was interested inme called I'm not sure if it's
Kino, I'm going to spell itK-I-N-O Map.
It says an app that can providea workout while also keeping
you entertained, which thought, hey, maybe that might be
something I need to go.
Uh, rovi, which I have used itis probably the competitor like
(50:41):
zwift um cycle go, an app thatoffers indoor cycling and
treadmill classes to help youimprove your cardio fitness.
Bike map um, which is an app foriphone and android users that
offer route planning, navigationand real-time updates.
And then if you are an appleuser and you pay for their apple
(51:02):
fitness, they do have where youcan actually ride along there
on your apple tv.
If that's something you'reinterested in although I really
believe the one I mentionedwould be, zwift would probably
be the most bang for your buckfor someone who's never tried it
, especially with that free14-day trial.
Not on us, that's just whatthey do and you can try it out
and see.
That gives you a chance toconnect your sensors, because
(51:24):
you can even put, like yourspeed sensor and cadence sensor
and all that connects, usuallyvia Bluetooth, to your device
and then your phone will pick upon that on the companion app.
Speaker 1 (51:35):
So if you're looking
to do something like that.
Speaker 2 (51:37):
I would try Zwiftcom.
Speaker 3 (51:41):
Well, one thing
that's interesting that you said
30 minutes because I had donesome research for another
segment that we hadn't gotaround to doing yet, but it
directly, uh directly links intothat and that's why I was
rummaging around here.
If you were watching, I all ofa sudden disappeared off the
screen and then showed back up.
I had to grab my uh, my bookhere, but, um, there was a study
(52:04):
that was done.
Speaker 2 (52:05):
I figured you were
just ordering a de brim, but go
ahead.
Well, yeah, order the de brim.
Speaker 3 (52:09):
Well, yeah, order the
DeBram real quick.
A study by the I believe it'scalled the Lancet Family of
Medical Journals this journalhas been around since the 1820s
and this is in Australia andthis was an Australian study
that was done with 700 adultsand these are adults that had
(52:30):
back pain whether it be normalback pain or back pain from like
cycling because I know a lot oftimes when you're hunched down
on that bicycle you wind up toget a lot of lower back pain and
that kind of thing.
But what it found is thatwalking three times a week for
30 minutes significantlyimproves spinal health and
(52:51):
reduces the amount of pain thatoccurs.
So if you're a cyclist and youdo after I mean I know I do
after long days in the saddle mylower back starts hurting and
that kind of thing.
You know, maybe do a 30 minutesof of walking or exercise, that
might also improve, like theback pain and that type of thing
(53:13):
.
Speaker 2 (53:14):
It's interesting you
say that because you know I've
tried running a little bit and Ijust realized that I'm just not
a runner.
Every time I run my lower backjust kills me.
Now I can run on the treadmillbecause it's got four shocks or
springs or whatever, and so it'sforgiving.
If I try to run outside thenext couple of days, I pay for
it, and the way I can get thepain to go away without even
(53:36):
talking to you is I go for walks, and so when I go for my walks
it definitely seems to be very, very healthy.
So not only because it'sdoctor-recommended, but I can
tell you personally itdefinitely helps.
So I have given up runningoutside, I just run on the
treadmill now.
Speaker 3 (53:51):
But, but you know
it's, it's important in the
winter time.
If you live in states likeMichigan and Kansas and all
those Northern states where weget some pretty cruddy weather
um, you don't just have to spendthe time on the bicycle.
Uh, you know, I mean there youcan.
I know you do a lot of hikingin the winter time to help stay
fit.
Walking, running, all that kindof stuff, stuff um is going to
(54:11):
be beneficial and certainlycould benefit your uh directly
impact and benefit your cyclingyeah, you're right, I do.
Speaker 2 (54:18):
I love my winter
hiking.
I get my crampons on and, uh, Igot my keens and I go out and I
love, love, love, love.
When it snows and ice, I'mbundle up and all my I'm not
paid by under armor to say this, but I bundle up and all my
under armor, cold gear and Iusually get a starbucks coffee
and, uh, head out there and I, I, I love it.
(54:41):
I love being out there andhiking and we I live in an area
where, we're very lucky, there'sall kinds of state trails and a
very safe area to go.
Speaker 3 (54:53):
I've gotten many
pictures of you out in the woods
and it's like snowing or it'sgot a lot of snow on the ground
and you're out there walking andyou've got your Starbucks in
your hands.
Speaker 2 (55:01):
You know they should
be paying me too, by the way.
Well, I just saw an articlethat the new CEO so for those of
you who don't know, the oldChipotle CEO took over Starbucks
, and so he's trying to get itback to being a coffee store
again.
So, getting rid of thetchotchkes in there and stop for
(55:22):
the upcharging of differentmilks.
And I still don't know how youget milk from an almond.
I guess you just got to squeezeit, but they're going to stop
charging.
Speaker 3 (55:31):
Oh, don't bring that
up in, uh, in dairy country.
Let me tell you, because theyyou know that is not milk oh,
I'm sure it's.
Speaker 2 (55:38):
Oh yeah, I mean I go
to the store almond milk like
huh, I never milked an almond, but uh but anyway, so anyway, so
that's an interesting piece um.
So yeah, I just wanted to giveyou my little history of what I
what they recommend.
So those of you who areinterested in staying fit, um on
, because, like I'm sure, likepeople who live in georgia,
(56:01):
florida, you know, they canprobably ride all year long, or
many they can ride most monthsum, and you can ride here too if
you got a fat bike and you'rewilling to go out.
I'm just, I'm just not.
Speaker 3 (56:11):
You want to put on,
you know three layers and you
know brave the cold and the ice,and yeah, no, it's not for me.
Speaker 2 (56:19):
I'm not that guy I a
couple times I've tried it.
I got a mountain bike.
I'd go out and then I'd behalfway into a ride going.
What am I doing now?
The difference for me when I'mhiking, I just don't have that
wind in my face so much.
Just not my deal.
But I'm happy for people whowant to do it, absolutely so,
(56:41):
anyways, that's about it, theonly thing we have left.
Unless you have something, Iwant to give you the floor
before I give you the.
I'm good, ladies and gentlemen,it is now time for Listener
Spotlight.
Speaker 3 (57:00):
All right, I think I
got a good one.
This episode, let's start offwith it, was originally this
community was originally named.
Well, its original name wasSwiss in origin.
Let's put it that wayCommunity's original name was
(57:23):
Swiss in origin.
The town was laid out in themid-1800s Okay.
Laid out in the 18, mid 1800sOkay.
If you are a squirrel or a bird, this is a town you want to be
in.
Hey, rocky, I'm just kiddingthe this community is one of the
(57:56):
oldest incorporated communitieswithin the state that it
resides in.
okay, uh, I said that the namewas uh, swiss and the original
name original name was swiss inorigin.
The original initial uhpopulation was primarily Swiss
immigrants.
Okay, the first big majorindustry of this community was
(58:20):
gold or revolved around gold, and this community can lay claim
to playing a major role inearly communications across this
country.
So it played a major role inthe early communications across
(58:47):
the United States.
Speaker 2 (58:50):
Okay, now I'm sorry,
you said country at first and
then you said United States.
I said across this country.
Okay, now I'm sorry, you saidcountry at first and then you
say United States, I said acrossthis country, so okay.
Speaker 3 (58:58):
And then I said the
United States, so clearly we're
talking about something in the U?
S.
Speaker 2 (59:09):
Well.
Speaker 3 (59:14):
I thought that was
pretty easy.
No, actually I think this is aharder one than last week's.
Speaker 2 (59:21):
Morris Code Nobody
got that one.
I'm thinking like Morris Code.
Shouldn't say my outsidethoughts, but I think I'm like
Morris Code and I'm thinkinggold, silver and gold.
Speaker 3 (59:37):
Okay, okay, burl Ives
.
Well, all right, I'll just I'mgoing to help you out.
It's not St Louis.
Speaker 2 (59:48):
I figured that Okay.
But that being said, ladies andgentlemen, go to the brimcom.
Speaker 3 (59:57):
Oh my gosh, it'll
never end.
Speaker 2 (01:00:01):
Spotlight has been
brought to you by the brimcom.
I'm just kidding, all right.
Well, listen, we've got guestsout there.
We've got some information foryou.
You know that our Christmaswish list is coming up on our
next episode.

Speaker 3 (01:00:24):
Oh, and the one final
thing I wanted to bring up
because I just thought of itRegistration for Big Brag yes.
Speaker 2 (01:00:32):
You want to do that,
do that.

You could either be men ofleisure or women of leisure.
Speaker 3 (01:01:02):
Hopefully we'll still
be able to do that.
Speaker 2 (01:01:04):
I hope so too.
Speaker 3 (01:01:06):
But the other big
thing is why is it important you
do it sooner than later.
Speaker 2 (01:01:12):
So you can take
advantage of the price break
before signing up um january sowe are is the yeah, what you
want to make sure is, atmidnight new year's eve they'll
do a route release party.
So if you're wondering wherethey're going or I don't know
about a party, but it'll be,usually it's a video.
We'll have a show that comesout on the first and definitely
(01:01:37):
want to catch that price break.
Speaker 3 (01:01:41):
So I actually have to
sign up.
Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
I got to sign up too.
So we are definitely going 100percent.
Put it on your calendar.
We'll look forward to that.
We've got some cool stuff thatwe're planning for that.
Yes, we do.
Speaker 3 (01:01:56):
We talked about some
neat things that we're looking
at doing team-type events duringthe week, so it could be a lot
of fun.
Well, it'll be a lot of fun.
It could just be like a lot lotof fun.
Speaker 2 (01:02:11):
Other than the
speakeasy, because that's almost
a guaranteed if we can find aplace.
But uh, this is actuallysomething we'll be doing the
speakeasy yeah and I'm sure, I'mdoing the speakeasy right now
well, as am I.
Speaker 3 (01:02:24):
So yeah, we'll
definitely do the speakeasy.
Last year it went really well, had a lot of people, um, but
we've got some other ideas toothat, uh, I think people will
find fun.
Speaker 2 (01:02:33):
What are you sipping
on tonight?
Can I ask?
Speaker 3 (01:02:35):
You can.
It's actually Buffalo Trace.
Oh nice yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:02:39):
Nice.
Speaker 3 (01:02:39):
I kind of go through
my bottles and it was open so I
thought, okay, I'll have alittle.
Speaker 2 (01:02:43):
Your collection.
Speaker 3 (01:02:45):
No, it's my bar.
Oh, it's just a well-stockedwhiskey bar.
Is what mine is?
Yours is a collection.
Mine is a well-stocked whiskeybar.
Speaker 2 (01:02:54):
Now tonight I am
enjoying some Uncle Nearest and
I definitely have many, manybottles that are open.
The collection is for the showbehind us here and for my own
personal enjoyment, but the baris down below and there's
probably just as many down therethat are open, but I figured
(01:03:20):
that I would just share that I'menjoying some Uncle Nearest.
By the way, uncle Nearestfemale owner.
Ceo.
Speaker 3 (01:03:30):
Oh really.
Speaker 2 (01:03:31):
Yes, ceo.
Oh really yes, sir.
Speaker 3 (01:03:31):
There's getting a lot
more female distillers, female
CEOs, things like that in thebourbon and whiskey business, so
I think that's kind of cool.
But that's actually one that Ihave not tried, so I might have
to stop by the local liquorstore and see if I can't pick up
a bottle of that.
I've seen it out there, heard alot about it, just never tried
it, so yeah, definitely.
Speaker 2 (01:03:52):
Uh.
It's about, I think, somewherebetween oh, you get cheaper
prices than I do, but 40 to 50price point, um, somewhere in
there, um, and uh, althoughprobably at your.
Actually, you said total winetook over lucas.
Right, I think your total wineis going to be cheaper than my
(01:04:12):
total wine.
Your taxes are a lot less overthere.
Speaker 3 (01:04:17):
We don't have as good
a roads.
Just joking.
Speaker 2 (01:04:23):
And on that note,
ladies and gentlemen, it has
been a great day for a bike ride.
Speaker 3 (01:04:28):
It has indeed have a
good one.
Speaker 1 (01:04:30):
