Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Road Adventures of Cycling Men of
Leisure.
As usual, I am Adam.
A little bit of a differenttone in my voice today, but it
is the season.
But I am lucky enough to bejoined by my good friend all the
way from Central Time, kansas,mr Michael Sharp.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Thank you very much, Adam.
Happy to be here.
How you been.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
You know I've been good, but once again I traveled
to Florida and once again I gotthis stuff Stuff in my.
But we're going to make thebest of it.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
You know why You're in Michigan it's wintertime,
it's like four degrees thereright now and there's a half a
foot of snow on the ground.
True, you're flying two hoursto Orlando, florida and getting
off and it was like 75.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Orlando.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
This is your body dealing with shock.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
This is true, that's all it is the shock.
When I even came back, I waslike what are you doing?
And ever since I lost 90 pounds, I was really cold.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
When I got here, you don't have any of that
insulation, do you?

Speaker 1 (01:00):
That's right, but how you been.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
I've been good, I've been busy, but you know it is
the holiday season and kidsthings and you know kids
programs and holiday parties andwhatnot.
And Thanksgiving was good yes, thanksgiving was very good.
Went down to my sister's familyfor Thanksgiving Very nice, yes

(01:25):
, thanksgiving was very good.
Went down to my sister's familyfor Thanksgiving.
So, um, very nice, smoked hamfor the first time.
Now, I'm not a big smoker, Imean I'm, I'm living near Kansas
city but I'm not a big intosmoking.
But uh, my brother-in-law hadhad gotten this pellet smoker
thing and he had it for like Idon't know, a year maybe.
And then he got this reallyhuge, massive smoker.

(01:47):
So he's like I've got this, would you like it?
And I was like, yeah, we'll putit out there, maybe we'll try
it.
And I had done brisket one time, so I'm by no means an expert.
And then we were supposed to bebringing ham down.
He was doing turkey and he'slike are you smoking it?
And it was like hadn't plannedon it.
But I thought, well, what theheck?
You know I don't mind gettingup at four o'clock in the

(02:09):
morning and started cooking.
So I got up, didn't really knowwhat I was doing, but I smoked
ham and I asked everybody.
Everybody said it was good andI said, come on, be honest,
everybody seemed to really enjoyit.
Uh, well, and then I'd alsostuck and I figured while I was
smoking I might as well smoke alittle for my mom, because you

(02:31):
know she might like smoked hamtoo.
So I smoked a little ham forher and uh, I guess it turned
out pretty good.
I mean, everybody tore into it.
So that was my big exciting newadventures smoking ham.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
That's cool.
Now, do you like to?

Speaker 2 (02:52):
smoke meat.
Is this something you normallydo?
I don't know all this about you.
No, no, Actually, other thanthe brisket that I did a couple
of months ago, that's the firsttime I'd really ever done smoked
meats and things like that.
And, of course, living close toKansas City, it's all about
barbecue and smoking and allthat kind of thing.
But I really hadn't gotten intoit.
But I thought, you know what, Imight as well give this a try.
Other than it's you have toreally plan out for the time.

(03:14):
It's not really time consuming, you just have to, you know,
start really early.
You know, occasionally add yourwood, do a little basting, all
that kind of stuff throughoutthe process.
So it's not really timeconsuming, you just have to
prepare for a long period.
So it's like I was saying youknow I'm going to go eat dinner
at five.
You can't start at four o'clockbecause that's not going to

(03:35):
work.
But no, it was a good time.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
I've kind of enjoyed experimenting with it Now, would
that be something that youwould like to do, Like, um, did
it make you want to go out andget one of those automatic
pellet feeder stoves, that thatyou know keep it at 275 or
whatever.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
That's what I have right now.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Oh, you do.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
It's a pellet stove.
Uh, it's electric.
It keeps a consistent thing.
Uh, I think what you're wantingto know is would I ever want to
go out and get like one of thebig ones with the firebox to do
like live fire and and try tomaintain the heat and stuff?
Um, not at this point.
I mean, I enjoy it, but it'snot like.
Oh man, you know, I can't wait.

(04:16):
Maybe I can have a smoking teamand woo cycling men of leisure,
smoking barbecue team orsomething.
No, I'm not.
I'm not to that point.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
And a rare and a rare occurrence.
I actually wasn't being selfish.
I uh, I was wondering if it'ssomething you would do as a
hobby or whatever.
You know, we just don't eatenough meat, uh, in this house
to we I'm not a vegetarian, butwe just don't eat a lot of meat.
I don't buy steaks on theregular, or something like that.
So I uh, I'll never forget whenthe one of the first times I
visited your house, your wifesaid, out of nowhere.

(04:48):
She said, adam, do you smokemeat?
And I remember saying, well, that's pretty damn personal.
And then I realized that I knowthat, like, every time I go to
Costco well, not every time, butduring the during, like the

(05:09):
fall and costco, they got theguys out there with the pellet
stoves and yeah, I have stoppedand talked to him and asked him,
like oh, how does it work?

Speaker 2 (05:13):
and and he's like well, this feeds it
automatically and this keeps itat this temperature, and that's
why I was curious, you knowsince you yeah um, being up here
, you know, because everybodyaround here is so hardcore in
the smoking thing, they kind oflook at like pellet smoking as
kind of like well, you're notreally smoking meat, but you
know what, I'm okay, I'm notgoing to start a barbecue team,

(05:34):
I'm just doing it in my backyardfor Sunday dinner or whatever.
So I'm good with it, but it'sinteresting.
It's very much like distillingliquor.
There's this lengthy process.
You got to follow the steps andthere's different points

(06:01):
throughout that process whereyou can insert different things
to affect the outcome.
You can put different glazes onit, seasonings, or you can use
this different kind of wood.
So it's very much likedistilling.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
So before the whole smoking meat was so popular, I
did it back in the day with theWeber grill and what you would
do is you would take racks ofribs and then different
induction heating where you putthe coals on each side.
So then you were getting likethe vortex, and but that was a
lot more difficult because youdidn't want the, you know ribs
were expensive and you didn'twant them to burn, and so then

(06:32):
you'd have to.
You, uh, you know technologywas amazing because then you
could put the thermometerwireless thermometer and then
you could watch it, you know, ifyou wanted to sit down on the
deck or a little bit, but you'realways constant.
It was nothing like a machinekeeping it at you know, a
certain temperature.
That was inconvenient, but Iused to enjoy doing that.
And then, um, I just kind ofgot out of it.

(06:52):
But that's cool man.
So mom's good, family's goodmom's good, family's good.
So yeah, getting getting readyfor uh for christmas so, yeah,
we, uh, we went to californiagrill, uh, at the top of the
contemporary.
That was my thanksgiving dinner.
And then, um, once, I whippedout the credit card and then, uh
, let's be honest, I use giftcards, but well, I use the uh

(07:16):
gift cards because you can getthe gift cards cheaper and then
buy it with my credit card.
But, uh, once I paid the bill,uh, they took care of the
cleanup and we had a good night.
So a little bit strange totravel during thanksgiving.
I'd never been down there forthanksgiving.
I've been there for christmasand new year's, but never been
there for thanksgiving.
Uh, day before thanksgiving parkwas perfectly fine,

(07:38):
thanksgiving day park wasperfectly fine.
Uh, we did animal kingdom um onon thanksgiving and then
california grill for dinner.
The population I mean you knowthe capacity of the park was was
nothing crazy.
Black friday and saturday yeah,I'm just spoiled to go at
different crowd sizes and thatwas just like, get me out of

(08:01):
there.
I was, I was ready to be.
It's just too.
I mean, you can't even walk inthe park and that's just not fun
.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
So, uh, but where'd you stay at?

Speaker 1 (08:11):
uh, bay lake tower.
So so, uh, we've mentioned onthis show many times, you and I
both own a timeshare there, so,um, I had never stayed at bay
lake that length of time.
We were there from tuesday tosunday.
Um, pros and cons, like I'm soused to staying at saratoga
spring, so if I want to jump onthe freeway and go to universal

(08:32):
studios, you're already rightthere by i-4 and you just go um
contemporary.
You know it's by magic kingdom, and then you got to go out of
magic kingdom deeper into theyeah so we structure we would
take a lift to go to universaland I would look at the lift
prices.
I thought, gosh, are theseprices like surging because of

(08:53):
thanksgiving?
And no, it was just more miles.
And then there were certaintoll bridges that I didn't
realize that, even though youdon't see a toll, even though
you don't see any kind of tollbooth, the on the lift receipt,
they were hitting me with thesetolls so definitely it's all
electronic out there, man yeah,a little bit, a little bit of
education, and, and you know, every time I go I learn

(09:13):
something so I can um, if this,if this show doesn't work with
all the equipment, then I willhave a, a disney.
Just kidding, there's hundredsand I'm I'm okay.
So uh, but uh that's cool.
Um.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
I hope you got everything range, cause I'm
headed down there in 20 somedays.
So yeah, yeah, buddy, everything is good, everything's
nice Uh make sure they treat meright, All that kind of thing
Listen.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
I mean a and me and mickey, and we go way back.
So, um, yeah, ever sinceoctober 1971.
They've been there, so you're Igot it all set up for you.
Excellent, appreciate that.
So, uh, getting on with theshow.
Um, we have heard a lot fromour leisure community.

(10:01):
So, for those of you who don'tknow, we decided to have a name
for the individuals audiencemembers who interact with us in
one way or the other, and so wehave deemed that our leisure
community and we love you all.
You and I decided, because ofThanksgiving, that we were going

(10:24):
to record one show and then, literally the next day, we
recorded again to buy us bothsome family time.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
It had nothing to do with Thanksgiving.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
It had my Florida trip.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
It had to do with you going to Mickey.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Mouse land when you're going to smoke that meat.
So, uh, hey, buddy, listen, Iam I.
But um, so so, uh, hey, buddy, listen, I am not I.
But um, so, uh, with doing that.
You know, we have a verypopular uh segment in the show,

(10:56):
um, listener spotlight, and wedidn't give a lot of people a
lot of time to guess, and so, um, I want to go backwards just a

(11:19):
little bit, and what I mean bybackwards is we had some people
who made some guesses on thecars and we'll get there.
But he said I'd also like to uhsubmit my guest for listener
spotlight.
And he says that the answer wassacramento, california.
And uh, and that's absolutely100 correct, um, but uh.
Then you said are you sure?

(11:40):
And he said I am very sure hehe answered in our, in our
private texting group uh, um,that he was, he was very sure.
And it turns out, yes, he was.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
So I wouldn't tell him what the answer was, though.
No, until the show came out no,um, but.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
And then we have another one which is a little
bit of a a longer answer, but,uh, we always appreciate our
good friend, stephen Witts, friend of the show.
He says hi guys, so enjoy theshow, love the podcast and your
interview with Maria was perfect, looking forward to the
Christmas wish list.
Now, of course, we've alreadyput that out.
We'll put a link down below forthe Christmas wish list show.

(12:20):
He says Debrim, aren't payingyou enough.
Adam, they're not.
They're not paying me at all.
They gave me a t-shirt and somenotepads and a pen, although
your wife said, if I buy a newDeBrim, she wants the box
because I think she's going topull a fast one on you.
So I love it.

(12:41):
But he says hoping to join youfor Bragg.
And listen, we are veryconfident that we already have
the 10.
For those of you who don't know, if you have 10 or more, when
you sign up for a team, you'reable to get a jersey, and so
we're based upon people thathave written us behind the
scenes we think that we'vealready surpassed the 10.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
So, stephen, We've already got at least six
confirmed.
There's been a lot of otherpeople that said, yeah, we're
doing it, we're doing it.
But I think we've got at leastsix people have told us they
have registered.

Speaker 1 (13:15):
So you want to register before new year's to
get uh, there's a little bit ofa discount.
So if you know you're going togo anyway, then then don't.
Don't leave money on the table,as they say.
Um, but Steven says hope tojoin you for brag and Steven, I
would love to join you for bragand steven, I would love to have

(13:36):
you with us for brag,absolutely.
He says uh, from, uh neartoronto and trying to sell a
little house.
Uh, hopefully we get a coupleof rate cuts.
Um, and forgive me, I I am not,I'm not familiar with the
canada uh real estate, sohopefully he gets the rate cuts
that he's wanting.
Um, he says he loves thesection of the podcast but
recently been able to hazard aguess based on three or four

(13:57):
clues.
Now let me stop there before Igo on.
Do you want to take this aboutthe clues?

Speaker 2 (14:03):
thing, yeah yeah, um, you know last episode.
You know we've been a coupleepisodes ago.
We've had people call or, youknow, write us and talk to us
about how difficult it is.
And I've often talked about youknow it's not like the you know
old days where you could justdo that and unless you got
encyclopedias or you're in alibrary, you could do the

(14:24):
research.
Nowadays it's so easy just tolook up stuff.
So I've tried to make it alittle bit more difficult so
people can't just go oh, youknow what this town hosts the
largest ball of twine.
Well, where is that?
At Boom, I know what it is.
So I've deliberately made themmore difficult because the
internet is at our access.

(14:45):
But I've heard a couple ofpeople say this and last time I
got really concerned because Iwas like, oh man, am I making
these things too hard?
Well, I'm not a mathematician, but I did go back and research
and it looks like we're gettingabout 20% accuracy on people
guessing.
And so I felt better because Iwas thinking, oh man, if we got

(15:08):
like five or 6% or something, but no, of all of them that
we've had, we've had 20% guesscorrectly.
So I didn't think that was bad.
That was way better than Ithought it was, and the
beautiful thing about it is thatit's all been like different
people pretty much, so they arenot impossible.
I now feel better.

(15:29):
We're at a solid 20% uhaccuracy on people guessing
these, so I I'm gonna leave itat that.
Now, this last episode, I didgo out and on a couple days
before, well, a couple days ago,uh, I did put an additional
hint out there for for helpingpeople, I pretty much maybe

(15:51):
handed it to a lot of people, but we'll see.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
What's my record?
0.0.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
Yeah, if we're going to go off of Adam's success
record, I'm going to need tomake these.
Okay, let's be honest, I'mgoing to have to dumb these
things down a long ways, oh mygosh.
No disrespect.

Speaker 1 (16:19):
Okay, anyways, just a figure of speech, okay, yeah,
so, um, it's not st louis, justkidding, um.
So these days, going back togoing back to steven's guest
that was came in right after werecorded he said this week
spotlight, he has some bush mill16 um.
He always mentions sometimeshe's got a special whiskey, so I
love it.
He's got a bush mill 16 yearold whiskey on standby um his

(16:43):
maybe that hampers him frombeing able to guess.

Speaker 2 (16:45):
I don't know how much of that bush mill he's gonna
drink.

Speaker 1 (16:48):
But he says, guess is sacramento california?
So he was hit it out of thepark.
Now I'm gonna buzz throughthese real quick here.
He says here's the reasons whyhe thought it was sacramento.
It was settled by john sutter,a swiss citizen, other swiss
settlers 1830s.
The settlement was called newhelvetia.
Helvetia means switzerland.
By the way, helvetica is a fontdesigned by a Swiss person.

(17:16):
Around 1850, the city wasincorporated.
With a Hold on one second Ilost my place, dang it.
1850, the city was incorporatedwith the name Sacramento
Sacrament in Spanish, namedafter the river.
Sacramento is the oldestincorporated city in the state
of California and the statecapital.
Gold was discovered by theSeller.

(17:37):
Gold Rush happened around 1848,and was definitely the biggest
industry at the time.
A transcontinental telegraphwas finished in 1861 with the
Western Terminus ending inSacramento.
There was a separate telegraphconnecting San Francisco.
Shortly thereafter, the PonyExpress closed as the telegraph
was a separate telegraphconnecting San Francisco.
Shortly thereafter, the PonyExpress closed as the telegraph
was a new form of communication.
Dogs and birds not a hundredpercent sure about this.

(17:59):
There is a new California lawpreventing the use of
anticoagulants stuff thatwarfarin on rats as a disposal
mechanism I'm thinking it hasbeen found in blood thinners
Don't dissipate and adverselyaffecting larger predators like
mountain lions.
Keep doing what you're doing,guys.

(18:20):
Thank you, definitely thank you.
That was two guesses, twoguesses yeah.
Sacramento, sacramento.
And then, of course, we hadanother guess which was only
like 50 miles from sacramento, and you gave you gave credit.

Speaker 2 (18:37):
Credit, I mean because it's so.

Speaker 1 (18:39):
Yeah, it was so close you call him mark, but that's
okay, matt mark, whatever, justpay him hey, we got the m name
right, or the m right, so okayso wanted to give both of those
uh people credit and so um.
And why don't we uh jump intothis week's listener spotlight?

(19:01):
Well, we, uh, we had somecommunications, but no real
actual guests.
I mean, there's some, there'ssome stuff here.
Stephen wrote me but it doesn'tactually have an answer.
It just says Canadian money iswhere his mouth is.
He's alluding that he thinkswhat you're going to say is

(19:21):
somewhere in Canada.
Okay, is it?
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (19:28):
You have no idea.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
I really don't know.
You have no idea.
I really don't.

Speaker 2 (19:32):
Well, our answer for this week's listener spotlight
is in Canada.
The other hint that I gave youI think I made mention that I
did send out another hint on ourFacebook page was a picture of
the album cover of the greatwhite North from the eighties.

(19:55):
Remember that song yes, takeoff to the great white North,
doug and Bob McKenzie, and whichwas actually played by like
Rick Moranis and Dave Johnson, Ibelieve.
A fictitious thing, but it wasall about Canada and that kind
of thing.
And it has the Great WhiteNorth, which is the unofficial
name of Canada.
This week's was Burlington,ontario.

(20:21):
Ah and the reason why I pickedthat album cover is not just
because they're Canadian and itsaid the Great White North to
tell you that it was Canada, butboth of the people in there,
dave and Rick, are from Ontarioand, more importantly, the
person singing, which you may ormay not know this, the really

(20:43):
high part, takeoff is sang byGeddy Lee.

Speaker 1 (20:49):
Oh, I remember old Getty.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
Lead singer of Rush, which is one of my personal
favorites, uh, you know, um,greatest drummer ever, neil
Peart.
Rest his soul.
Um, but no, uh, he's on thereand he was also from Ontario, so
I was giving a lot of hintsaround the Ontario thing.

(21:11):
But the land was purchased fromthe British, from the native
people.
Every year they have a Mohawk.
Chief Joseph Bryant was grantedthis track of land and they
celebrate him every year as thefounder of the city.
It was incorporated in 1914.
The town, burlington, isactually named after a local bay

(21:34):
, and this last one, which I'msure would have hung some people
up In this town, you need towatch where you park.
If you don't, you might end upasking what's up?
They have a hill there, likeone of those mystery hills that
if you park your car literallylooks like it's rolling uphill.

(21:55):
It's all like you know, opticalillusion and that type of thing
, but it's called King's Roadand so if you park there your
car might look like it's rollinguphill.

Speaker 1 (22:06):
That's pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (22:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (22:09):
There you go, so Burlington Ontario.

Speaker 2 (22:14):
Yes, sir.
So thank you to our listenersin Burlington, Ontario.
I would also like to saywelcome to our listeners from
Belgium.

Speaker 1 (22:24):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
And Kenya Really Picked up two countries, yep.

Speaker 1 (22:29):
I love it.

Speaker 2 (22:30):
Remember back in the day when we started this whole
thing I think the very first, maybe the second, I think it was
the first podcast we weretalking about.
Yeah, we decided to do this andI said I had one goal in this
podcast.
It's like I just want to getone listener from Africa, and I
will be happy.
Of course.
Four weeks later we had alistener from Africa.
But there you go.

(22:53):
A little rush, tom Sawyer, it'sfor you, buddy, it's a great
band man.
Neil Peart was just like thegreatest drummer ever.
I agree.
There you go.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
Now I have to cut that out Because we put the show
on YouTube.
I just wanted to play a smallclip.
I wasn't Ignoring you, I wastrying to get it connected,
that's okay, ignore me all thetime.

Speaker 2 (23:27):
I'm used to that, oh BS.
Two other things I wanted to doreal quick yes, sir I told you
had a couple little things Iwanted to slip in.
I just wanted to mention acouple birthdays.
Is that okay?
Yes, okay, number one, uh,december 5th birthday of someone

(23:49):
I know that you never knew, butdefinitely love what he did
Walt Disney.

Speaker 1 (23:56):
I did I well, hold on I before I go.
I knew that I, you know, I, I,I belong to multiple, multiple
Facebook pages and I I keptseeing that.

Speaker 2 (24:07):
Oh yeah, he's a.
He's a Disney nut job.
I said that with all with allrespect, but yeah.
You're the guy I come to andI'm like what is this all about?
Have you eaten at thisrestaurant?
I mean, you're like my personalDisney guide.
When I or my family need toknow something about Disney or
how to operate or work somethingat Disney and make things

(24:27):
happen, I just call you or mywife calls you sometimes or text
you and like what is this allabout?

Speaker 1 (24:34):
So you said that you were going there for your trip.
I remember calling you sayingyou got to do this at this time.
You got to get on at 5 am, yougot to call this.
You got to do that.
And the next day I text you.
I said how'd it go?
You're like it worked out great.
And I got off the phone.
The phone.
I was like you have no idea howthat's going to work out until
you get there.
Then you're going to be likeadam is the cat's meow.

Speaker 2 (24:56):
So what's funny?
Because I'll say something.
It's like oh yeah, I think thisis how we do it.
And or I'll say this is how youdo it.
I did my research, I found out.
She's like do I need to calladam?

Speaker 1 (25:11):
you know, it's taken a long time and and Disney does
a great job of trying to changeit up all the time.
So people don't don't learn itlike I do.
But then, um, and I'm not alone, there's all kinds of oh yeah,
my favorite thing is when you gothere you know the people are
like well, I know the way to doit.
You gotta be quiet about it.

Speaker 2 (25:29):
You don't advertise it Cause because then everyone
everybody knows the secrets andeverybody's going to be doing it
exactly.

Speaker 1 (25:37):
I'm like even lauren, god bless her but she'll be
like don't we go over there tothat, to that turnstile there.
I'm like would you be quiet sodon't give away the.

Speaker 2 (25:48):
You know what you can give away information.
Just give them kind of the theokay information.
You know it's like being a.
You know like a double the.
You know what you can give awayinformation.
Just give them kind of the ehthe okay information.
You know it's like being a.
You know like a double spysomewhere.
You know you give the otherside just a little bit of stuff
that's like somewhat good butnot really, and you know.

Speaker 1 (26:03):
One of my favorite things is when we get back
probably not this time, therewasn't enough time there but
when we get back and everyone'slike I waited in line.
The only time I had to wait inline was for a restroom.

Speaker 2 (26:19):
Yeah, For a restroom.

Speaker 1 (26:23):
I said if you're waiting in line too long, you're
doing it wrong.
Yeah Well, cool.
No, I'm excited for you guys'trip.
And then your second birthday.

Speaker 2 (26:32):
My second birthday is .
Let us celebrate and wishSmokey the Bear a happy 80th
birthday.
That's right, smokey the Bear, ladies and gentlemen, which is
the longest running publicservice character ever created

(26:54):
in the United States.
History Been around for 80years and quite interesting.
I have a little fact I'm goingto share with you.
His image is controlled by theForest Service or whatever you
know.
They've got the copyrights andO-Net and all that, but they
have actually allowed one schoolin this country to use Smokey

(27:16):
the Bear as its official.
What do you call him?

Speaker 1 (27:21):
Mascot.

Speaker 2 (27:22):
Mascot.
Thank the Bear as its officialmascot.
Thank you as its officialmascot.
I don't remember what year itis, but there is a small town
called Hill City, south Dakota.
It's right over there, next tothe Black Hills, and apparently
there's a big forest fire goingon and a bunch of the guys from
the high school basketball teamwent out and helped the forestry
service fight this forest fireand as a thank you, the forest

(27:45):
department allowed them stillallows them to use Smokey Bear
as their official school mascot.
So how cool would that be to go?
You know what our mascot isSmokey the Bear.
So only you can prevent forestfires.

Speaker 1 (27:59):
Well, that's what I was just gonna say.
Have you ever heard about that, that weird phenomenon, like
like well, if I asked you, whatdoes smoky bear say?
Only you can perform forestfires.
But if you search on google, you can't find an image with him
saying that.

Speaker 2 (28:14):
It's just really weird, uh oh yeah, there's just
always like there's an image oflike him holding a shovel or him
doing this or that, but yeah, there's never one.

Speaker 1 (28:21):
that's like yeah, they got a name for that and I
wish I could say what it is, butit's like, I don't know, like
Luminata or whatever it's like.
You think an advertisement hadsomething, but it really never
did.
It's in your mind.
And so we, as children and asscouts, heard him grow up and

(28:45):
said I mean, we grew up with himsaying only you can prevent
forest fires.
But what's really weird is youcan't find that anywhere.

Speaker 2 (28:52):
But you know what they started out?
I mean obviously 80 years agoand it started out as a big ad
campaign.
So I mean I think my first, most of the images that I have
of him is in print.
It was in boys, like magazineand all these other things, and
you'd go and travel to differentstates and it'd be on the back
of travel booklets and brochuresand stuff.
But at the bottom I can alwaysremember seeing only you can

(29:15):
prevent forest fires.
And then I would see the littleuh logo of the forestry service
.
So yeah yeah um so there we go,a couple of uh of birthdays and
a little uh interesting triviato impress your friends or not
impress your friends, whateverwell, uh, listen, I uh, I try to

(29:35):
impress my friends, I try toimpress you.

Speaker 1 (29:38):
So it's still not working.

Speaker 2 (29:40):
But I'm impressed.
The new bottle you acquiredlast week impressed me very much
, so, yes, yeah, yes, yes, thereit's, it's.

Speaker 1 (29:50):
It's actually in the picture right now, above the
word R and O, and my microphone.

Speaker 2 (29:57):
So there you go, very nice.

Speaker 1 (29:58):
All right, and my microphone stand there, you go.
Very nice, alright.
We now have another episode ofoh man Encounters with cars.
So our good friend Armandowrote us.
Excuse me, armando Armando.

(30:20):
He wrote this and said, um that, uh, he's got an encounter with
a car story.
Just north of his house, abouttwo miles, there's a rule area
with a road that's about sevenmiles long, with a nice shoulder
.
After work One evening he saidI figured I could get 20 miles
in before the sun went down.
Combination of being rulestraight and an adequate

(30:41):
shoulder makes it for a reallynice ride.
So I'm going happily along.
When I heard a pickup truck comeup behind me I heard a scream,
kind of like a pirate's ar.
Immediately followed by a sharppain in my back.
I noticed a beer can tumblingin the air in front of me.
The guy in the passenger lanehad thrown what I think was a

(31:02):
mostly full can of natural lightat me.
A few seconds it took me toregain my senses.
The truck had speeded away, sped away and I couldn't get a
license plate number, but I hada black and blue mark.
He says I'll send you a picture.
And he did, and it was a prettydecent.

Speaker 2 (31:18):
Oh yeah, I mean, it was a good size bruise, but I
don't think it's very goodadvertisement when you've got a
bunch of good old boys figuringthat it's better to throw the
mostly full can of Natty Lightat a cyclist rather than drink
it Probably not saying much forwhat's in the can.

Speaker 1 (31:38):
So I have an offense to anybody who drinks daddy
light, but he mean the collegekids that may not be listening
to us right now.
Yeah exactly so, when I wasstill driving the bus, um, um,
for those of you who don't know,I I drove the bus and now I run
the place, but, um, but puttingmy putting myself through

(32:01):
through my bachelor's and mymaster's, I was still driving
and they were putting in thisnew speedway gas station and it
said a big sign that says wewill now carry beer, and they
were remodeling it.
And so this is, we will nowcarry beer.
And they had two signs it has abud light and a natural light.
And one of my passengers said Ithought they said they're going

(32:21):
to carry beer.
Yeah, I just thought that wasso funny.

Speaker 2 (32:24):
We're not carrying good beer.
We're just carrying beer, yeahright oh yes, now we've just
shown to the world that we are,in fact, beer snobs so there you
go right.
Well, listen, I mean, as youget a little older, your your
taste but you know, you get alittle older you get a little
more coin in your pocket.
You can, uh, you know, move upthe uh that is average ladder.

(32:45):
That is the ultimate dream, looking behind you.

Speaker 1 (32:49):
Yes, so I have an announcement uh-oh, no, this is
good, this is, this is.
This is a wonderful're gettinga new co-host.
Wow.
Well, I wasn't going to sayanything right now, but no.

Speaker 2 (33:07):
We are recording this on a Friday, so you know it is.

Speaker 1 (33:12):
We have a new monthly sponsor.
Sponsor Dennis Keeler hasdecided that he needed to help
us be a monthly financialsponsor.
Dennis, we want to just takeour opportunity and thank you.
We now have three monthlysponsors.

(33:33):
We have Dennis, who is ournewest, our original OG sponsor,
our wonderful friend, and anduh scott, and and alex as well,
and so, uh, gentlemen, thank youso very much, so um appreciate
all that that helps us uh down, kick the can down the road, so

(33:56):
to speak.

Speaker 2 (33:57):
So you're responsible for keeping this on the air.

Speaker 1 (34:02):
None of you like the show.

Speaker 2 (34:03):
Good or bad?

Speaker 1 (34:05):
Please contact Dennis Scott or Alex.

Speaker 2 (34:07):
That's right?

Speaker 1 (34:09):
No, I just want to say thank you so very much.
That's really, really awesome.
Definitely, if you're lookingto be a sponsor, you can go to a
couple different places.
You can go to our Buzzsproutwebsite and you can follow the
show link there, or you can goto our web page and you can do
it through paypal.
So, uh, we appreciate everybody.
We've also had many people makesome pretty considerable

(34:30):
donations and we thank you forthat.
So, absolutely, um, you've gotsomething about, uh, mr gates
yes, yes, I'm glad you remindedme.

Speaker 2 (34:43):
Uh, last week I went to this really interesting.
I don't normally do thesethings, but um down at our big
kaufman center, which is our bigI'm just kidding different
story okay but we'll talk aboutmy experiences with taylor swift
at some other time.

(35:04):
But I do have one.
Um, down at our big performingarts thing in downtown kansas
city is a kaufman center andthey put on you know, uh,
everything from you know operaand dance to you know speakers
and that kind of thing.
I had the unique experience ofgetting the opportunity to
listen to Josh Gates, and I knowthe only reason because you're

(35:24):
not a TV guy.

Speaker 1 (35:26):
Not at all, but I am.
Yeah, I'm the guy that To thepoint.
Ladies and gentlemen, whenMichael and I share hotel rooms,
literally I would be willing tobet, within 180 seconds of us
getting in that room, that TV ison.

Speaker 2 (35:44):
Totally agree, it is.
That's the first thing I do andit's not so much what I'm
watching, it's just the noise.
I gotcha, I like the noise andso generally I'll turn it on.
And this is how you got yourexposure to it, because I know
you don't watch the shows.
But Josh Gates has been on TVfor a long time.
He has been in shows likeDestination Truth, expedition X,

(36:05):
expedition Unknown.
He's got a new one coming out.
He's been doing it through likethe Discovery Channel and the
Travel Channel, and I know I'vemade Adam like listen to it if
not watch it occasionally.
But I had the opportunity to goto a event that he was putting
on where he talked about some ofthe events that he, or some of

(36:26):
the you know mysteries that hehad looked into, and answered
questions and all this type ofthing.
What was really cool is I wentahead and I bought the full
package, the VIP experience.
So not only was I, you know, second row from the stage, we
actually had a meet and greetwith him.
So I actually got to meet JoshGates.

(36:46):
You know, I mean as much as youget to meet somebody on a meet
and greet, you know, shake hishand, signed a picture, signed
some other things for us, andthen you know we took a picture
with him.
But I bring this up becausenumber one, if you're anywhere
where Josh Gates is coming totalk about his adventures, I
would highly suggest going, evenif you don't really know who

(37:06):
Josh Gates is.
It would be something thatwould be truly fun and
interesting and it was a greatnight.
You don't have to be a superfan or know anything about his
shows because he tells thesegreat stories about everything
from hunting cryptids to lookingfor sunken treasure off the
coast of South Carolina orwhatever.

(37:27):
But I would suggest look it upbecause I know he's touring the
country and if you have theopportunity, definitely do that.
I would suggest the VIPexperience because it was really
cool, uh, to get to talk to himfor a few minutes.
Um, he's a very down to earth.
I mean, pretty much what yousee on a film is is him.
Um, at least that's how heseemed.

(37:49):
But the thing that I liked ishe had one slide where he was
talking, or he had, you know, video going up there
occasionally and he had onething come up and he was talking
about.
You know, the next thing I needyou guys to do?
Um, cause he was talking aboutadventuring.
Is he goes, I need you, how didhe put it?
Uh, get out.

(38:12):
And just flashed up on thescreen.
It's like I need you to get out.
And it was like okay.
And then two seconds later itsaid often and he was talking
about how you don't have to beon his TV show to have this big
adventure and that it reallystarts with just each one of us
as individuals getting out there.

(38:32):
And it might not be going tosome foreign country searching
for a cryptid or treasure oranything like that, but it's
just get out and explore theworld around you, whether it be
your local town or you know, weall live in towns and cities
that have things that we like.
Well, I've been here for 15years and I've never, you know,
the World War I Museum in KansasCity.

(38:53):
I've lived in Kansas City for15 years or so, never been there
, been by it, been across thestreet to the station.
But my point is he has thatreally kind of leisure attitude
that we try to promote and Ithought it was very interesting.
And then it's like, you know, just get out there.

(39:14):
Doesn't matter where you'regoing, get out there, explore.
There's always new things tosee, new people to talk to, and
there's, you know, there'salways adventure, and that
adventure doesn't necessarilyhave to come with some plane
ticket overseas or somethinglike that.
So it was a great message and agreat time.

Speaker 1 (39:31):
Just real quick.
I I I know who the gentlemanJosh Gates is, but if I'm at
home listening or if I'mwatching us on youtube and I
have no idea who josh gates is,um, what channel would I catch
him on?

Speaker 2 (39:44):
you can catch him on the discovery channel.
I think he's on now and if youdon't know who he is and you're
looking, you're watching us onyoutube.
There is the picture of him.
Cool, cool, cool.

Speaker 1 (39:57):
He said michael adventure on and that is what I
will do, that's cool, yeah, umwell, I appreciate you
mentioning that.
Uh, and you know, you and I tryto get different adventures
going all the time, so, um, soin my heart, josh gage is an
honorary cycling man of leisure.

(40:18):
Well, in that case, cocktail toyou, sir.
So right, all right.
Well, I think that leads usmoving right along.
I think that leads us to.
Ladies and gentlemen, we'llclose the show out with Listener

(40:41):
Spotlight.

Speaker 2 (40:44):
All right, here is our clues for this episode's
Listener Spotlight.
The town was founded in the1870s.
It is named for a local NativeAmerican village and also a

(41:04):
river.
It was built at its locationdue to the railroad Mills,
became a big part of this town'seconomy and remained a big part
of this town's economy andremained a big part of this
town's economy for over 70 years.
The town is surrounded byseveral lakes.

(41:27):
Early in this town's the first40 years of this town, it
suffered from like three majorfires.
So I mean they were justburning this town down like a
lot in those first 40 years.

Speaker 1 (41:46):
So, um, and this town's main drag did not get its
name from a standup routine, but it could have.

Speaker 2 (42:03):
Hmm, from a stand-up routine, but it could have, and
what I will try to do is in afew days I will try to drop
another little extra hint on ourwebsite to help you out.

Speaker 1 (42:16):
So this show is going to come out on december 8th, so
you're saying maybe by, likethe 11th or 12th, maybe you
might.

Speaker 2 (42:26):
Yes I will.
I will shoot for the 11th or12th to have another guest out
on our website, uh, on our uhfacebook site.
Okay, um, so that'll help alittle bit and I will tell you.
I'll give you another hintright now.
Okay, it is not in canada andit is not st louis.
There you go well I just I'mout.

(42:52):
I lowered the parameters alittle, not much but I
eliminated canada.
You don't do the same foreigncountry two episodes in a row.
That's just not good for them.

Speaker 1 (43:04):
No, no, otherwise you got to get more loonies, more
toonies.

Speaker 2 (43:08):
Oh wait, just kidding we already got enough of that
here.

Speaker 1 (43:13):
Well, listen, I can look in a mirror and find a
loony, but I found a little clipthat I sent you about, I don't
know, maybe three weeks ago, andI'm going to mention it.
This is from Brad Pitt.
Brad Pitt was giving a littlebit of a speech, I think for an
award, and he said what is moreimportant, the journey or the

(43:37):
destination?
And he was reading a passagefrom somebody.
And he says what is moreimportant, the journey or the
destination?
He said it's the company, and Icouldn't agree more with that.
Hear, hear, absolutely what.
That being said, in Michigan, today was not a great day, but
somewhere, I am sure.

Speaker 2 (43:58):
Today was in fact a great day here in Kansas For a
bike ride.
Yes.
I mean, it wasn't like you know, it was like 50 some degrees.
Yeah, I mean yeah.

Speaker 1 (44:12):
Good day for a bike ride.

Speaker 2 (44:13):
We'll end on that Good day for a bike ride.
Thank you for coming along withAdam and Michael on Road
Adventures with Cycling Men ofLeisure.
