Ever wonder what happens when wrestling legends gather to celebrate one of the industry's most powerful figures? This week, WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long joins Mac Davis to pull back the curtain on his recent attendance at Vince McMahon's ultra-private 80th birthday bash. From sitting at McMahon's personal table alongside John Cena to receiving a remarkable marble bust inscribed with "Some legends are carved in stone," Teddy shares rare glimpses into this exclusive celebration where phones were prohibited and the WWE patriarch was "at home" directing the production.

The conversation shifts to Teddy's adventures at Dragon Con, where he brought an unexpected superhero into the wrestling world by appointing Superman as a special referee for the main event. With costumed fans and electric crowds creating what Teddy calls "an indie performer's dream," his stories paint a vivid picture of wrestling's unique intersection with fan culture.

Through the mailbag segment, Teddy reflects on career highlights and regrets—from refereeing the legendary Steamboat-Flair match at Chi-Town Heat to wishing his bout with Eric Bischoff and Boogeyman "never happened." He shares fascinating insights about his early days refereeing sixteen matches in a single day and the evolution of Doom (Ron Simmons and Butch Reed) from hooded Ebony Express members to one of wrestling's most formidable tag teams.

Whether you're a longtime wrestling fan or simply love behind-the-scenes stories from entertainment's most colorful characters, this episode delivers candid reflections from someone who's truly seen it all. Subscribe now and join us for these exclusive conversations you won't find anywhere else!

Speaker 1 (00:02):
Bada-boom, bada-bing.
Hello and welcome back to RoadTrip After Hours.
I'm your host, mac Davis, alongwith me, wwe Hall of Famer, mr
Teddy Long.
Hey Teddy, hey Mac.
What you doing, brother?

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Oh girl, I ain't doing nothing.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Girl, look here, don't start that with me.
That's you and D-Wong I went to.
This is one of the things I wasgoing to bring up today too.
I went to Dragon Con First timethere.
I've never been to a Dragon Conor anything like it, and it was
one of the most unusual yetentertaining sights I have ever

(00:39):
seen.
Teddy, I know you were therebecause you were part of the
wrestling program at Dragon Con.
How was your time there?

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Great.
I had an absolutely great time, man, and they invited me back
next year, so everything wasgood.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
That's very cool.
It is a very professionallydone con.
Let me tell you something I'mnot used to wrestling.
I mean to these kind of conswhere they go 24 hours.
They don't have a stop.
There are parties or there aregroup meetings throughout the
entire 24 hours.
It is intense.

(01:14):
But if you just want to takethe family there one time, just
go for the weekend.
Let the kids see all the crazycostumes.
I think they'd have a blast.
My wife, she saw some of thefootage of some of the stuff I
was doing, teddy, and she wassaying you know, I never wanted
to go, but after seeing that Iwant to go now.
I want to go see what this youknow the whole thing is.
Um, did you?
I saw a lot of wrestlingcosplay there, people in

(01:37):
costumes, uh, and I knowsuperman, as a matter of fact,
was a part of the uh main eventright in and the wrestling show.
Yes, tell me how that cameabout.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Well, they had this referee that was a heel referee
and they had me to come out, suspend the heel referee and
assign my own special refereefor the main event for that
night and I thought none otherperson couldn't do could do the
job, none other than Superman.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
So Superman was the guest referee for the dragon con
uh main event I know he gotphysical in the event because I
saw him rearing back for a punch, uh, in one of the uh images,
uh, from wrestle con, fromwrestle con, from dragon con,
and uh, it just looked like alot of fun.
The amount of people in thatroom to watch, uh, those matches

(02:23):
, teddy man, that's the an indieperformer's dream to get in
front of that kind of crowdbecause they're hot and they're
all there for the same reason tohave fun and enjoy themselves.
And that kind of atmosphere, man, it creates a lot of great
matches during the night.
I want to talk about this toobecause, teddy, you and I have
not been able to really connectwith our schedules for the last

(02:46):
couple of shows and during thistime you were gone.
You went to New York, you were,as people already know from
social media, you were part ofVince McMahon's 80th birthday.
You want to say anything aboutyour time there you want to talk
about, just kind of, let usknow how it was.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Well, no, not really.
Everything was great.
I had an outstanding time.
I hadn't seen Vince in someyears and he walked up to me,
greeted me real nice and told meit was good to see me.
I told him the same here and Ithanked him for everything he's
done for me.
The next night at the party, what really got me is I just

(03:25):
walked in, I just sit down at atable, you know, and so the lady
come and got me.
She says are you Teddy Long?
I said yeah.
She said well, you're atVince's table.
So the only person that I thinkwas at that table was me and
Kurt Angle.
I mean, I'm sorry, my bad, meand John Cena.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
I'm sorry, my bad, me and John Cena, I'm sorry, I
know there are a lot of namesthere.
There are some that I've seenand they've been public about it
.
You know, get the Undertaker, godfather, people like that.
I can imagine being aroundthose guys because you're
talking about a lot of guys youworked with over the years, so
it had to feel good to get inthe room where you're just with
those guys.

(04:05):
You know what I mean.
Not with all the other fans, you're there with just the guys.
Yeah, I call them the heavyhitters the heavy hitters Zach
Minger, already popping in heresaying happy earlier birthday,
teddy.
Teddy, when's your birthday?

Speaker 2 (04:20):
September 15th.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
Not too far away.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
The other thing we're going to do too, and Mac was
talking to me before we came onthe air here, and he's dying for
me to show this.
The best man sent me.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
Yeah, hang on real quick.
Before you show it.
Let me kind of set this up.
Teddy sent me this image andthere's a lot of things that
Teddy will send me that I don'tshare.
You know it's private.
It's private and there was onething in particular.
He sent me a couple of days agoand I saw it.
I was like what the hell wasthat?
And this is what he's about toshow you.
And, teddy, how did this comeabout?

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Well, I don't know, you got to talk to Vince.
It was in my hotel room andthis was his way of giving gifts
and he gave me this, and well, they sent it to me.
But this is what it is righthere, and I hope everybody
camera a little bit there.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Yeah, that's incredible.
When I saw that I kept thinkingwas this some kind of a joke
thing that you had laying around, or a miniature?
That's a nice full head bust ofVince.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
McMahon yeah, and it says at the bottom.
It says some legends are carvedin stone.
Vince McMahon.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
Very cool, very cool.
Yeah, that's something I youknow.
I don't anybody's seen that yet.
There's a possibility that'salready been out there, but that
kind of stuff, you know, weknow that a lot of things at his
birthday party were veryprivate, so much so that they
didn't allow video or picturesreally being taken without
approval, and they were doingtheir own kind of production

(05:57):
there too, right, teddy?

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, they were.
You couldn't have any phones.
They'd take the phones from youand, like I said, vince was
doing his own producing and uh,so I'm which I'm sure we'll see
this somewhere on netflix orsome tv somewhere yeah, and you
mentioned that it looked goodbecause he was up with the
headset again.
Looked like he was well yeah Isaw him at that one point and uh
, he was.
You know he was at home.

(06:19):
You know he had his headsets onand he was talking to kevin and
you know it.
Just, he was just at home, hewas just so relaxed.
I could tell that you know thatthat's all that, this is his
life and that's all he wants todo.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Pretty classy lady popping in saying hey, mac and
Teddy, good to see you in hereagain tonight.
And, by the way, if you'd liketo be a part of the show, all
you have to do is just leave usa comment.
Have to do is just leave us acomment.
You don't have to pay foranything.
There's no super stickers oranything like that.
All of this is free.
Just simply leave us a messageand we'll bring it up on the
screen.
In fact, pretty Classy Lady isasking Teddy, did you ever meet

(06:53):
Ernie Ladd?
My mom met him in the 70s.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Yeah, I did meet him when I was working with Vince.
They brought him in at onepoint in time, I think he came
in to help out a little bit, butI did get a chance to meet him.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Let's see we have Zach, I'm sorry.
Happy National Eat, an ExtraDessert Day, pretty classy lady.
Uh-oh, uh-oh, may have a littleblossoming love thing going on
here.
Zach and pretty classy lady.
He's been kind of sweet on her.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
Yeah, but don't use our show to get the hook up, all
right.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Let's see.
We'll take one more questionbefore we go into a quick break
and come back with the mailbaghere, michael, hey, michael,
good to see you.
Hey, teddy, did you ever I'mnot sure if I understand this
Hang on?
Did you ever?
Did you ever I'm not sure if Iunderstand this Hang on?
Did you ever weather with?
Maybe Hoffman Hoffman?

Speaker 2 (07:51):
I don't understand none of that what he's talking
about.
Did I ever weather with?

Speaker 1 (07:56):
What do you mean?
Sure, you understand that.
Go ahead.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
I don't know what he's talking about.
I don't understand it.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
I'm sorry, Michael.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
Did you ever weather with, maybe Hoffman?
I don't know what he's talkingabout.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
It sounds like you've got an attorney coming after
you.
Maybe you've got some guy namedHoffman and Hoffman coming
after you, who knows?

Speaker 2 (08:17):
I don't know.
Maybe he's talking about Maven.
Is that Maven's name?

Speaker 1 (08:21):
Yeah, maybe he wants to know if you ever worked with
Maven Hoffman or Hoffman.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
Well, I can't say because I don't know whether
that's Maven's real name or not,so I don't know idea what he's
talking about.
Let's see.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
Let me just make sure before we get out of here.
I was about to say maybe heclarified it, but he hasn't.
So, michael, just clarify it alittle bit for us.
We'll answer it once weunderstand what we're talking
about, but in the meantime let'sget in that mail bag here.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Letters.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
Oh, we get letters.
We get your letters every day, mailman, mailman, mail.
Today.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
Reach right in and pull one out.
Oh letters, I love thoseletters.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
Let's find out what you've got to say Mailman mail
today.
Okay, let's see Inside themailbag.
Our first question, jeff on Xasks You've made a lot of

(09:29):
wrestlers participate in somewild matches, such as JBL and
Undertaker in the last ridematch, jbl and Big Show in a
barbed wire steel cage match andthe Inferno match with Kane and
MVP.
Oh, and also Matt versus JeffHardy in a stretcher match.

(09:49):
Do you have a favorite of oddmatches like these?

Speaker 2 (09:55):
I think the favorite was the one with Kane.
When I put somebody in, who didhe say with Kane in the fire
match MVP, MVP, yeah, yeah.
That was my favorite one.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
How dangerous was that?
What were they using?
That's when they hit the firearound the ring.
Is that right?

Speaker 2 (10:15):
Yeah Well, you just got to be careful.
That's all I can tell you.
You can't run away from thefire.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
No, no, because the fire is going to burn, no matter
what.
By the way, michael is poppingback in clarifying what he was
saying.
It'll stay up there, there wego.
Sorry, did you ever work withMegan Hoffman?
Who is?

Speaker 2 (10:36):
Megan Hoffman.
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Yeah, I don't know who this guy's talking about.
Did you ever shoot a name fromthe Indy days?
Maybe Megan Hoffman?

Speaker 2 (10:49):
Yeah, I don't remember.
I may have Megan Hoffman, Ijust don't remember that name.
I don't know who that is.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
Let's see Chris Nelms popping in here.
That's an old friend inwrestling, teddy, you may know
Chris Nelms.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Oh yeah, I love Chris .
Chris has always been a greatguy man.
Hey, what happened?
Player.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
I'm sorry.
He used to go by Locomotive.
At one time he used to give hima hard time of it.
One time he used to give him ahard time Choo-choo.
Hey, Mack and Teddy Teddy, howdid you feel about being locked
in the shark cage in WCW duringthe match between Ron Simmons
and Butch Reed?

Speaker 2 (11:24):
Well, I had no choice .
Whether I like it or not, that's where I had to go, but I
really enjoyed that.
That was great man.
That was part of the AttitudeEra and it was absolutely great.
I love doing stuff like that.

Speaker 1 (11:38):
Let's see Perry in Georgia.
Somebody else from Georgiawants to know does WWE pay for
the ring gear of wrestlers orsuits and dresses for the
announcers?

Speaker 2 (11:51):
Well, I don't think so.
I mean they made someannouncers and some maybe top
guys may have that kind of dealcreating their gear and having
it made and everything else.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Suppose you walk up to Gorilla and Vince doesn't
like the gear you're using.
I mean, can he take turn around?

Speaker 2 (12:26):
He's going to tell you what you mean.
If you don't like it, you ain'twearing it out there, you're
going to go take it off.

Speaker 1 (12:32):
Yeah, it seems like somehow they've got to be
involved, at least be on thesame page for how the gear
should look.
I would think.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
Well, what they should do is, when they decide
on something, they should maybeget with the writers and let the
writers take a defense and showa defense and see what he has
to say about it.
But a lot of these guys andgirls, they'll go to making
stuff you know and don't asknobody.
Nothing you know just so I knowI look good in this, can you
make this, you know?
And then when they tell you youcan't wear it, then that comes

(13:01):
to the attitude problem.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
So I would imagine, even in some cases, if, let's
say, a guy shaves a beard thathe's had for a while, or a woman
who's had long hair that cutsit short, I imagine you better
pass that by the office beforeyou get it done in most cases,
right.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
Well, yeah, yeah, exactly Anything dealing with
the body and stuff where you gotto be out on TV.
And if you're going to changesomething, then you need to let
somebody know.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
Let's see Michael's saying hey Mac, and Teddy, hey
Mac, were you ever in GCW?
No, no, there's so manyvariations of that.
I'm assuming that maybe you'retalking about Georgia, uh,
championship wrestling orsomething like that, but uh, no,
there's a.
I just worked in theindependence, in the Georgia
area mainly, and, uh, I had agreat time while I was doing it

(13:44):
before I got hurt.
Uh, let's see what else we gothere.
We have.
Speaking of hurt.
Uh, our next question comesfrom captain hurt, who writes if
you, I don't think it'll beanything.

Speaker 2 (14:02):
I had a great time with everything that I've done,
from getting jackets, fromputting up the ring, taking the
ring down.
I mean my whole career.
I mean there were some goodtimes and there were bad times,
but that made it all work for me.
You know.
I just you know, I knew whenthe bad times were there.
So I just struggled rightthrough that, you know, and just

(14:22):
kept right on going and I knewwhen the good times were so, but
you also got to understand whenthe good times, you got to act
just like they're not good times.
You don't let nothing go toyour head, because that's the
worst thing you can ever do.
So and I never did do that andthat's why I'm still a survivor
and I'm still around.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
Was there a an angle maybe, or a storyline that you,
if you, could just say, oh, justget rid of that, I don't want
that.
Anywhere in my history of beingin wrestling Was there a
storyline or something that youjust wish never happened.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
I wish I never had the match with Eric Bischoff
where a boogeyman came in anddid the run.
That was the worst, JesusChrist.
That was just horrible.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
That actually made the worst match of the year, if
I recall.

Speaker 2 (15:09):
I'm sure it probably made the worst match of the
century.

Speaker 1 (15:14):
All right, let's see.
We also have the Meltdown.
Hope you guys are doing well, you as well.
Happy Thursday from Arizona.
Oh, I know that's Brian.
Hey Brian.
Well you as well.
Happy thursday from arizona.
Uh, oh, I know that's brian.
Hey, brian, I'm sorry.
You know who this is, teddywrath.
Who wrath?
Uh, let's see, how would youknow him from w?
Uh wf, which was adam bomb?

Speaker 2 (15:36):
oh okay, all right, I didn't know nothing about the
rap there, all right, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, adam is great man.
What a great guy man.
I I saw him.
It's been a little while, Ithink we were somewhere together
, but I did talk to him.
But he has his own podcast.
He's doing great too, man letme tell you something.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
Uh, wrath.
Uh, for those who don't know,go back in the wcw catalog and
look for wrath.
He was a great character forwhat they when he was.
I always enjoyed wrath, oh in.
I always felt like there wassomething about him that said
star, it screamed it as a matterof fact, but he just never hit
the height that I thought hewould hit.

(16:13):
Why, I don't know, but heshould have been champion.
He just has that aura about him.
Even when you see him today and, teddy, you said you've met him
recently Even when you walk upto him today, he feels special.
He has that star quality, right?

Speaker 2 (16:28):
Well see, his problem is he's like, everybody like
him.
That's so nice, great attitude.

Speaker 1 (16:34):
They don't make it no no, no, and I know exactly what
you're talking about.
Let's see here Michael's sayinghey, Teddy, did you ever work
with Maven?

Speaker 2 (16:44):
Oh yeah, I did work with Maven.
Yeah, when he first came infrom Tough Enough I worked with
him, and then I saw him a whileback and I did a little bit of
work with him.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
All right, Patty in Cincinnati.
This is a good question.
Now I'm trying to remember if Ican even answer this.
Did WWE ever make a Teddy Longteddy bear?

Speaker 2 (17:10):
No, not that I know of.

Speaker 1 (17:12):
Now you know that's a great question, because you
would automatically think thatthat would be a go-to for
somebody in marketing to go.
You know what?
Teddy Long, teddy Bear, howhard is that.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
Hey, my man, you, they.
It was hard enough to get acard back then, a Teddy Long
card, let alone a Teddy Bear.
Jeez, that's not right?

Speaker 1 (17:31):
That's a great question, because I never really
thought about that before.
Let's see, steve.
Hey, steve Teddy, was youaround the Magnum TA deal, and
do you see him now?
I guess he means the Magnum TAdays.
Oh yeah, I worked with MagnumTA deal, and do you see him now?
I guess he means the Magnum TAdays.

Speaker 2 (17:46):
Yeah, I worked with Magnum.
I was there when he got hurt inthe car accident and everything
.
Like I said, I haven't seen himlately, but sometime on the
different cons and differentsignings I get a chance to run
into Magnum.
But yeah, he's still around andhe's still humble, still a nice
guy.

Speaker 1 (18:04):
He sure is.
As a matter of fact, I did aninterview with him that you'll
find on this channel and onYouTube for Road Trip After
Hours.
One of my early interviews Idid with Magnum TA, a super nice
guy, and he gave a great storyabout that cage match with Tully
Blanchard and the spike thatwas used in that match is a
great story behind that.

(18:24):
So look that up down below, let's see Pretty classy lady.
Let's see Are either of y'allNFL fans?
Are you ready for the newseason, Teddy?
Are you a football fan?

Speaker 2 (18:35):
I'm not a big football fan, but I am a
football fan and I am gettingready for the season.
I'm looking at a lot of newtalent that the Atlanta Falcons
have acquired.
So I'm looking forward a lot ofnew talent that the Atlanta
Falcons have acquired, so I'mlooking forward to watching them
.

Speaker 1 (18:48):
Yeah, I love football when I can sit down and
actually enjoy it.
Otherwise, I'm not a rabid fan.
I'm not going to watch everygame that happens throughout the
weekend.
That's just not me.
I got too much other stuffgoing on to do that.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
But let's see Darren from Florida is our last
question coming from the mailbag, and he asked what was your
favorite match that you refereedprior to WWE?
Probably the Steamboat andFlair match, chi-town, chi-town

(19:22):
Heat.
Yeah, that was a real, that wasreal important.
I really, you know, I reallywell, I gained some steam for
myself by doing that.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
Now look, I've never seen you back.
I've seen you in Harley racesmatches before.
Yes, it's amazing to me when Igo back to watch some of the
early videos of Jim Crockettpromotions, nwa stuff like that
and I'll see you pop up as thereferee in a lot of these
matches a lot, and it amazes me.
Go ahead.

Speaker 2 (19:50):
I was the only ref I had to do the Saturday morning
show and the Saturday afternoonshow.
All of them, it was like 16matches.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
I imagine you learned quick then.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
Well, you had to learn.
You know what I mean, becausethere wasn't no time to play, it
was all strictly business.
So by me being able to work allthose matches, you know, by
myself and everything, it wasgreat for me because I could
learn and concentrate, andthat's what I did.
Every one I stepped into.
I learned something that day,yeah.

Speaker 1 (20:17):
All right, let's see Brian Teddy.
When did you meet Ron Simmons?

Speaker 2 (20:24):
Ron came in from Florida.
They brought him up.
He was working down there andhe came in and they brought him
up to WCW and that's when we didthe thing with him and JYD God
rest his soul.
I made the fast count and didthe heel rubber return, but
that's when I met Ron.

Speaker 1 (20:40):
When did Butch get involved?
When did the idea come togetherfor Butch and Ron to get
together?

Speaker 2 (20:49):
Well, nancy, benoit, nancy, god rest her soul she was
managing them and they were I'mtrying to think what they
called them then oh, the EbonyExpress.
They had on hoods.
And finally, when Kevin broughtup, you know, and mentioned me
and let them know about me beingable to talk and they wanted to
make me a manager, well, that'swhen they decided to take those

(21:11):
guys and put them with me.
So that's when Butch came inthe picture.
Then, after, when I came inwith Ron, they came in as the
Ebony Express.
Then I took the hoods off ofthem, you know, I said they're
too good looking to be wearinghoods, you know, and here they
are doing.

Speaker 1 (21:27):
Hopefully we didn't lose you just then, teddy.
Hopefully that's just the flashfrom your phone getting a call
you there.
Yeah, there you are.
Okay, let me ask you on the mic.

Speaker 2 (21:38):
Who was better?
Ron Simmons, butch Reed Well, they both could talk.
You know what I mean.
Butch was.
You know he was a little moreentertaining because he's kind
of country, you know, and he hadthat slang about him.
You know I'm going to poke chopyou.

Speaker 1 (21:50):
He was real funny.
Yeah, I always wondered, becausefor you to be the mouthpiece of
those two and neither one ofthem had a problem using a
microphone.
I mean, you had three guys thatwere in a group that could just
burn on a microphone, so it washard to ever, you know, not be
successful with the group ofdoom and Teddy.
Did we lose you for good thistime?
I think we lost Teddy for goodthat time.

(22:12):
All right, I would say, well, hang on, guys, and while he's
there, he goes.
He's trying to get back in here.
Let me grab it.
And there you are, you can hearus.
Okay, yeah, okay.
Let me get in a few morequestions before we finish up
here.
Michael, saying what are yourmemories working with Big?

Speaker 2 (22:31):
Johnny Teddy.

Speaker 1 (22:35):
I don't remember him and I don't want to remember him
.
Is he talking about JohnLaurinaitis?
Is that who that is?
