(00:00):
Hello, there the Detroits wheels dogDerek, How are you, buddy?
All right? Dereck Saint Holmes,How the heck are you? Man?
You have been one busy son ofa gun. I'll tell you what like
a one legged man? I seeyou play it a lot in Nashville these
days, So congratulations on that. But we've got you coming in here to

(00:22):
perform on Friday night in Dearborn atthe Ford Community Center, and it's going
to be a pretty special evening. This thing is starting to really, you
know, gain some ground and getsome interest, and you know, it's
kind of funny. We're going totalk about the Love of Buddy Miles show
coming up this Friday. But Idon't know, did you know that today

(00:46):
was actually the day back in twothousand and eight that Buddy Miles passed away.
I did not know that. Yeah, February twenty six, two thousand
and eight. So your buddy JohnBobby passed along that information. And what
a week this has been, justyou know, getting ready for this show.

(01:08):
It's got to be pretty exciting foryou to be playing with Jim McCarty
and Kenny Olsen and yourself. Ikeep saying, it's like the MotorCity trifecta
of guitar players, you know, playing this Friday night. How special is
that going to be. That's goingto be awesome. I cannot wait to

(01:29):
see all of them, especially JimMcCarty. He's one of my favorites in
the world. Yeah. He actuallyplayed with Buddy Miles. Now were you
You're familiar with Buddy Miles music, but you never played with him, right,
I never played in a band withhim, but I would always,
believe it or not. We usedto scrabble let's see you. It was

(01:52):
a Buddy Miles band and Ted Nision. We did a couple of shows like
that. And then twice I wentthrough the Dallas Airport work and bumped into
Buddy just hen and I, Ohmy goodness, I'm an escalator of me
coming down. And it was sofunny because you know, you don't have
much time to talk. He hasto just catch up real fast. Right.

(02:12):
Buddy was always so nice, socordial, and just a just a
consummate great guy. So that's that'swhat I remember. And just a consummate
professional, you know. God,he was good live. Well, it's
great that you're going to be apart of this because I think between yourself,
McCarty, Kenny Olsen, and thenall of the incredible musicians that are

(02:37):
going to be coming out for this. You worked with Peter Keys, I
know, right here in Detroit fora couple of shows. Yeah. And
I worked with Peter sometimes down herein Nashville, especially before he got the
Leonard skinnerd position. We used toplay together a lot, So I can't
I can't wait to see him. It's gonna be you know, old Home

(02:59):
Week. It's gonna be great. We should mention that Mark Cassup and his
band Slate Return are going to beopening up, but just yeah, and
they're so good. You know,I've known them for a long time now
and I was drawn to their musicalmost instantly. And they used to open
up a lot for Robin Trouer.Robin Trouer insisted on having Mark and his

(03:23):
band open for him whenever he cameto town. So we got to know
Robin Trouer pretty good. And heseems to surround himself with great musicians like
yourself. So they sounds fabulous.I cannot wait to see all of them.
So it's gonna be a good night. Yeah. He puts some real
effort into putting this show together. And as I was talking to Kenny Olsen

(03:47):
the other day when we were talkingabout this show, I said, I
think this is only the tip ofthe iceberg of what could be for tributes
to Buddy Miles, you know, going forward, because I think more people
are gonna want to get involved afterthey they find out about this show.
But right, I believe so wemight, Yeah, we might be able

(04:10):
to take it to another level.Yeah, right, although you know,
having like Dennis Chambers and Tony Lindsayfrom Santana, I mean, that's a
that's a level in itself right there, wouldn't you say? I mean,
uh, that's all the way tothe top already, Doug, Yeah,
incredibly Yeah. Yeah. And thenyou've got Henry Brown from the Experience Hendricks

(04:32):
Tour and uh and Yama Sultan whowas actually playing with Hendricks at Woodstock.
The connection between Hendricks and Buddy Milesis pretty strong. Now, have you
have you gone ahead now with therest of the guys and and decided on
what songs you're going to be doing. I believe we have. But still

(04:59):
we get finalized, you know,I'm just I'm not gonna give too much
away, But I think things forme will be like wrap it up.
I'll probably go to that. There'sa song a nice blues called Texas,

(05:20):
I'll probably sing that, and thenI'll probably sing a song called down by
the River. A lot of thesesongs people will know when they hear them,
and it's gonna be pretty exciting.I think. So this has got
to be when you were first approachedto do this show, I'm thinking to

(05:42):
myself, this's gotta be a littlestretch for poor Derek, because you know
people are gonna come and want tosee you play Stranglehold and uh, and
yet you're gonna be You're gonna bedoing some some really different sounding music than
you normally do in the bars, although you know, I know that you

(06:06):
can handle it. I mean, you're yeah, but did you did you
have to think it over a minute? What what was the what was your
feeling when you first found out? What my feeling was? You know,
when Mark Cassa asked me to comeand be a part of it, and
knowing Buddy and listening to Buddy allthose years, especially with Jimmy Hendricks,

(06:30):
I instantly said, absolutely, countme in and I can probably you know,
I grew up on Buddy Miles singing, so you know, all the
way back to my Bloomfield days.I can uh, you know, I
can sing all that stuff. Butit's gonna be interesting to see how we
intertwine it all together. I'm excitedto play with, you know, Jim

(06:57):
McCarty on a couple of these thingsbecause Jimmy's yes, yes, and it's
just gonna be it's gonna be incredible. I can't I can't wait. Yeah,
I'm leaving pretty soon to come upto Detroit, so I'm excited.
I know you're gonna be doing somerehearsing so uh that that's going to be
leading up to the show on Friday. Once again. Tickets are available for

(07:19):
this you can get them at thedoor as well. It's at a beautiful
venue. I don't know if you'veever seen this place, but it really
is a jewel in Deerborn that nota whole lot of people know about,
especially when it comes to rock androll. I saw the new Yardbirds there

(07:40):
about five or six years ago,and I was just blown away by the
venue. So, you know, every seat in the house is absolutely beautiful.
It's the foreign community and performing ArtsCenter and tickets are available through the
Dearborn Theater dot com website or likeI say, you can just get him

(08:01):
at the door. But yeah,I was pretty proud to be asked to
be a part of this. It'sa little stretch for myself, although I
grew up buying Buddy Miles albums,so you know, well, I know,
right, yeah, so, butyeah, Jim McCarty called me up
and he was he was so appreciativeof the fact that we're doing this.

(08:24):
You know, people recognize him fromMitch Ryder in the Rockets and of course
even Cactus, but they never reallyassociate him with Buddy Miles. Yet he
recorded on three of Buddy's albums andand really had a relationship with him that
was very heartfelt. And he wastalking about it, and I've never seen

(08:48):
Jimmy so excited to perform a show, I really, you know, I
mean, he loves it. Obviously, he's out all the time. But
uh, I think this is goingto be special for everybody on this bill,
which is why I was saying that. I thought, uh, you
know, this may be the tipof the iceberg. When other artists find

(09:09):
out about it, they they justmay want to be a part of it.
You know it'll be it'll be interesting, Doug. Once we started next
year, everybody's gonna want to behonest, Yeah, no question about it.
So players, So, how's lifebeen going in Nashville. I I
like I said, good, we'rehaving a good time down here. But

(09:30):
busy, busy. It's been thebusiest year Costs in the last five.
It's just super busy. So youknow, we're just I'm playing all the
time. And now have you nowwith uh? With Aerosmith on hiatus for
God and he knows? How longhave you had a chance to talk to

(09:52):
your old buddy there, Brad Whitfordabout uh maybe you know, picking back
up. We haven't had a chanceto check yet. But you know,
we're just kinda we're in a holdingpattern for now. I know, either
either everybody's you know, uh,either putting our concerts on home for a

(10:16):
little bit, or some some peopleare even retiring. I know there's this
guitar player Froute from Detroit. Wehis name is Ted, Yes, retiring.
Let's see how long you got itlast? Well, yeah, I
definitely want to see how long thatlasts. I talked to him, not
too long ago months or he's notgoing to be sitting but very long he

(10:41):
could be competent a bit. Sohopefully you we'll do something and I'll get
together with everybody. Would be fun. Yeah, his energy is like sky
high right now. He's he's doingall this social media stuff. But I'm
thinking at some point he's gonna wantto get back there and start jamming and
that guitar again. I know he's, uh, he cannot be sitting in

(11:05):
some sort of rock and chair.Maybe he's a bit of a sly dog,
he knows. You know, ifyou take a little bit away,
maybe they want a little bit morelater, you know. So I'm gonna
put my money on that one.Yeah, well it would be great if
when he did come back out,uh you know, you were a part
of that again because obviously, youknow, people know just how important you

(11:28):
were to Ted's world and to uh, you know, some of his biggest
albums and songs. And yeah,so I love him dearly. I mean,
he's like my older brother, andwe we just have so much fun
every time we get together. Andwe'll probably you know, next few months,
I'm probably gonna hopefully see him downin Texas and yeah, there you

(11:52):
go. See, we're gonna youknow, we always like to hang out.
Who knows, maybe you know, you know Ted, maybe next year
he'll want to be a part ofthe Love of Miles. Yes, of
course we're gonna need we'll need abigger venue so all the amplification could fit
in. That's always good, Mileswhiplash. There you go. Wow,

(12:18):
that is funny. Well, Derek, congratulations on being a part of this
show, and thanks for taking thetime out seeing everybody up there. It's
the greatest rock town in the world, Detroit, and we're gonna have so
much fun. So I can't waitto see you. Yeah. I can't
think of a better place to kickoff this event then, unless it was

(12:41):
like in Buddy's backyard, because Detroitis the place to be. Jim McCarty
is here, I can. Ican just tell that by both him and
Kenny's feelings about this show that thisis special for them and and I think
for the family two of Buddy Milesand the people that surround him like Boo

(13:05):
and and those people who I haven'tmet yet but I'm excited to and uh
and and they really they really cherishuh, you know, the legacy that
Buddy laid down, and it's beenway too long uh till this has happened.
So uh, I think for everybodyit's going to be a good thing.

(13:26):
Yeah, we're all excited and we'llsee you there in March first at
once again the Ford Community Center anduh tickets once again are available at Dearborn
Theater dot com or get them atthe door. Just come on out and
experience just just you, Kenny andJim McCarty all on stage. That is
going to be an instagrammable moment rightthere. It's gonna be a whirlwind,

(13:52):
all right, Derek Saint Holmes, thank you so much for checking in with
Detroit Wheels and we'll see you Friday, Buddy. Okay, yeah, I
thank you.
