C’è chi lo considera un modo “gentile” per sottrarsi a una relazione ormai esaurita. In realtà, il ghosting — interrompere ogni contatto con qualcuno senza spiegazioni — si rivela una forma di esclusione sociale dalle conseguenze più profonde di quanto si immagini.   A dimostrarlo è uno studio condotto da Alessia Telari, Luca Pancani e Paolo Riva del Dipartimento di Psicologia dell’Università di Milano-Bicocca, pubblicato sulla rivista Computers in Human Behavior.

La ricerca, intitolata “The Phantom Pain of Ghosting”, è la prima a osservare in tempo reale le reazioni al ghosting, andando oltre gli studi basati su ricordi o ipotesi. I ricercatori hanno coinvolto volontari in brevi conversazioni quotidiane via chat con un collaboratore, chiedendo loro di compilare questionari sulle emozioni provate. A metà esperimento, per alcuni la comunicazione si interrompeva bruscamente — simulando il ghosting — mentre ad altri veniva comunicato un rifiuto esplicito o la conversazione proseguiva normalmente. Questo metodo ha permesso di seguire giorno per giorno l’evoluzione del disagio emotivo.   I risultati mostrano che, sebbene sia il ghosting sia il rifiuto minaccino bisogni psicologici fondamentali come l’inclusione e l’autostima, nel primo caso la sofferenza si prolunga nel tempo. «Il silenzio mantiene le persone intrappolate in uno stato di incertezza che ne impedisce la chiusura emotiva», spiega Telari.

 Il rifiuto diretto, al contrario, scatena un dolore immediato ma più breve, seguito da un graduale recupero. Il ghosting lascia invece un senso persistente di confusione e isolamento: chi viene “fantasmatizzato” percepisce l’altro come meno morale e fatica ad accettare la fine del legame. «La comunicazione conta, anche quando si decide di chiudere una relazione apparentemente insignificante», conclude la ricercatrice. Comprendere l’impatto del ghosting può aiutarci a gestire meglio le rotture digitali e a promuovere rapporti più empatici e consapevoli nel mondo online.
