Victory in the Desert -- Phoenix Arizona has come a long way since it’s hot, dry beginnings. Water was scarce, but adequate, until droubt struck in the late 1890’s.
Armed men were posted to guard the water supply as the desert reclaimed farmland as it’s own. What can be done to keep the crops and cattle from dieing? Hope comes when a man claims that engineers might do something to rescue the water supply.
History is soon to be made when president Teddy Roosevelt backs plans to build a dam. An adventurous effort to haul in supplies by mule wagons, irrigate the desert, and reclaim Western lands for use by Americans is a success.
The Recluse of Fitzroy Square -- One of the best kept secrets of chemistry was discoverred by a reclusive scientist, William Wooleston He started as a medical doctor, but took up the study of applied science. Platinum had been known since ancient times, but it was figured that it was impossible to work with to make useful objects.
Locking himself into his laboratory, Woolseton poured all his efforts into developing paladium. A new metal that’s controversal in the scientific realm. His colleagues label him a fraud, but Wooleston ignores him behind his locked doors, and invents more alloys of platinum, even a method of making the strange metal malleable to make things with it.
