Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey there, beautiful souls, welcome back to Shades of
Tone, where we reflect, growand push beyond our comfort
zones.
Today we're diving deep intothe messy, uncomfortable but
incredibly powerful realm ofadversity.
Yep, we're talking about thosechallenges, like those at us,

(00:22):
that feel impossible at the timebut end up teaching us lessons
we never saw coming.
This episode is all aboutempowerment through adversity
and the stories of those whoface life's hardest moments and
came out stronger.
Because, let's be real, it's inthe storms that we learn how
strong we really are.

(00:43):
So today's quote is by Booker TWashington, and he stated
success is to be measured not somuch by the position that one
has reached in life as by theobstacles which he has overcome.
So let's jump into it.
Let's start by talking aboutwhat adversity really means.

(01:08):
I think we can all agree thatlife doesn't always go as
planned.
Whether it's losing a job,going through a breakup, dealing
with health issues or facing anunexpected challenge, adversity
doesn't play favorites.
It comes for us all.
But here's the kicker Adversityis also the ultimate teacher.

(01:33):
Adversity one-on-one pop quizAre you ready to grow?
Adversity can be one of life'sgreatest opportunities for
growth, even though it doesn'tfeel that way in the moment.
I worked in the healthcarefield for a decade and got a
position that somewhatacknowledged a degree and

(01:56):
experience within the company Iwas committed to.
I found the project ending andno luck getting another position
within the company.
Although I had plenty ofthoughts and feelings towards
not securing my next position, Iknew that severance pay would
allow me to work on my businessand find more work.
In the meantime, adversitythrew me into a career aligned

(02:19):
perfectly with my mission as anentrepreneur, and I wouldn't
have been able to have done thator had that opportunity if I
had found a position at the oldcompany.
Adversity is not just somethingto survive, but something that
can empower us, shape us andmake us more resilient.

(02:41):
So let's talk about somestories of overcoming Now.
I know it's easy to sayadversity is a teacher, but how
about hearing from some reallife warriors who've walked
through the fire and came outstronger?
I've got a couple of powerfulstories to share with you today.
I've got a couple of powerfulstories to share with you today.

(03:03):
These stories will show youthat, no matter how tough things
get, there's always a pathforward, and often it's not the
path we expected.
So one of my close friends wasa teenage mom and she had to put

(03:27):
her basketball career on holdbecause she wanted to
concentrate on her son and beingthe best that she can be.
She went to school, she becamea nurse and fast forward.
Now her son is of age, he's inschool as well for tech, I
believe and they're living thelife that they want.
They go traveling, they doeverything that it is that they
want to do.
Now, although she might havehad him young, it gave her all

(03:50):
of the tools that she needed tobe the exact person she was
destined to be.
Now she's married and hasanother little child a perfect
family her way.
This next one is about Sarah'sjourney with chronic illness.
Sarah was diagnosed with achronic illness in her 20s and

(04:11):
it derailed her life plans, butshe found strength in advocating
for herself and others withsimilar struggles.
Sarah reframed her experienceand used her adversity to create
a platform for raisingawareness about invisible
illnesses.
Sometimes people walk aroundand we just assume that because

(04:31):
they look okay that they are,but that's not always the case.
There are all kinds of diseasesthat can basically enable you
from within right, so we havediseases like lupus, ms and
things like that that youcouldn't necessarily tell a

(04:52):
person had unless they told you.
But does that make them lessimportant of a chronic illness?
It's something that they haveto live with for the rest of
their life, right?
So let's move on to James andcareer building.
James was a successfulprofessional and lost his job
unexpectedly in his 40s.

(05:13):
This loss led him into a darkperiod of self-doubt and
financial instability.
But through his hardship, jamesfound a new passion in
entrepreneurship, creating abusiness that not only brought
him personal success but alsoallowed him to help others
facing job loss and careertransitions.

(05:34):
It is important to shift ourperspective and embrace the
unknown, especially when plansgo sideways.
Let's now chat about the powerof resilience.
Resilience is one of thosewords that gets thrown around a
lot, but what does it actuallymean?
Resilience isn't about beingtough or pretending everything

(05:58):
is fine when it's not.
It's about getting back upafter you've been knocked down,
sometimes slowly, sometimesimperfectly, but always with
intention.
And the best part, resilienceisn't something you're born with
, it's something you build.
Think of resilience as yourpersonal Lego set.

(06:20):
It takes time to build, butonce you got that baby together
and the pieces in place, you'reunstoppable.
It's a science behindresilience.
It's a skill that can bedeveloped over time.
Practices like mindfulness, gratitude and self-care play
into the role of buildingresilience.
Resilience is like that friendwho tells you you've got this

(06:44):
while you're crying into yourthird slice of pizza.
They're there reminding youthat this is just a chapter, not
the whole book.
Now here are some practicaltips on building resilience.
Reframing challenges how can weshift our mindset from why me to

(07:07):
what can I learn from this?
Remember the way that you talkto yourself sets the mood for
how you feel in the future.
Take small steps.
Break big challenges intosmaller, manageable pieces,
right.
Break big challenges intosmaller, manageable pieces,
right.
So even if you, let's say, break those into smaller pieces

(07:30):
and you skip a day or you didnot meet the deadline for
something that you said that youwould do, take accountability,
but start where you left off at.
Just know that every step youtake now will equal a mile
someday.
Lean on your community.
You don't have to go at italone.
Reach out to friends, family oreven professionals when you

(07:53):
need support.
As long as you know thatthey're genuine, there's no
reason that you can't confide inthem.
Self-compassion is huge.
Being kind to yourself duringtough times is essential for
resilience.
Perfection isn't the goal,progress is.

(08:13):
So now let's chat aboutcreativity as a tool for
overcoming adversity.
Surprise, surprise Creativityis back in the chat.
Did you know that expressingyourself creatively can actually
help you process adversity inhealthier ways?
Whether it's journaling, painting or even dancing out

(08:35):
your frustrations, creativitycan be a powerful tool for
healing and overcomingchallenges.
I'm telling you, art therapy isreal.
Creative outlets can helppeople process complex emotions,
deal with grief and expressfeelings that might be too
difficult to verbalize.
I encourage you to try creativepractices as a way to channel

(08:58):
your emotions during tough times.
Creativity doesn't need to begood, it just needs to be real.
Billie Holiday was a musicianwho turned pain into beautiful
music.
Stephen Crane, born in myhometown of Newark, new Jersey,
was a writer who found catharsisin storytelling.

(09:18):
Let's turn pain into purpose.
As we wrap up, let's talk aboutone of the most empowering
things about adversity theability to turn pain into
purpose.
So many people who faceincredible challenges go on to
use their experiences to helpothers, whether it's starting a

(09:41):
support group, mentoring someonewho's going through a similar
struggle or simply sharing yourstory.
There's immense power in usingyour adversity to make a
difference.
Motives please reflect on yourown challenges and think about
how you can turn thoseexperiences into something

(10:01):
meaningful.
Sharing your story, even insmall ways, can create ripple
effects of empowerment forothers who are still in the
thick of their challenges.
So here's the thing, motivesLife is hard.
It throws curveballs we didn'tsee coming and tests us in ways

(10:23):
we never imagined.
But here's the beauty in thatstruggle, you are so much
stronger than you know.
Every time you face adversity, you're adding to your toolkit.
You're learning, growing and, most importantly, becoming more
you.
Adversity doesn't define you.

(10:44):
How you rise through it does.
Thank you for joining me onthis journey today.
I hope these stories andinsights remind you that, no
matter what challenges you face, there's power in your pain and
purpose in your perseverance.

(11:04):
Until next time, keep rising, keep thriving and you're capable
of more than you know.
As always, always, love.
