Welcome back to the Check A Pro radio show! This week, we're excited to have heating and cooling professional, Nathan Shafer from Shafer Heating and Cooling to answer your burning question. Together, we delve deep into a question that often arises: what size heating system, or furnace, do you need for your home?

Often, homeowners believe that a larger heating system would essentially deliver better performance, but Nathan elaborates on why this isn't always the case. Sizing heating systems appropriately is crucial because an oversize or undersize unit may not efficiently meet your home's demands.

A proper load calculation on your house is essential in choosing the right heating system. This involves considerations like window and door sizes and types, flooring type, insulation values, and even the house's particular orientation. Factors like these are crucial for our comfort specialists when performing calculations using our software programs.

Boasting a rich repository of knowledge and experience, Nathan discusses how today's heating systems differ from older models. The implementation of safety switches and mechanisms in modern systems show how the industry's evolved, and why an accurate size is paramount to prevent functional issues.

Nathan further warns homeowners about unreliable information and empowers listeners to investigate for themselves. His mission is to ensure every homeowner receives the correct size heating system that not only efficiently heats their home but reduces the burden of operation on the utilities front.

Check A Pro Joe here on the Check A Pro Radio Show with a heating and cooling
expert you've seen him here before on the program Nathan Shafer from Shafer
Heating and Cooling hey Nathan,
hey how are you i am doing well thank you for asking a questions come into the
radio program may I pose this one to you so you can answer it in your expertise

(00:21):
way okay sounds good question The question is,
what size heating system or furnace do I need for my home?
How does someone actually know how to size that?
Great question. So, you know, there's a lot of rules of thumb out there and people go by those.
Unfortunately, there's a lot of third party studies by Consumer Reports and different ones.

(00:47):
And, you know, majority of systems are improperly sized in homes today.
And so sizing is a huge thing. Oftentimes people say, well, give me the biggest one. That'll be better.
And oftentimes that's actually quite the opposite. And so we want to make sure we're properly sized.
We don't want to oversize the system, but you also want a system that's too
small and doesn't satisfy the needs of the home.
And so there's a lot actually that goes into the sizing of a system. them.

(01:10):
What needs to be done is what's called a proper load calculation on the house.
And so we take things into consideration such as the window,
the size of the windows, the types of the windows, the doors,
size and types of those, the flooring, the type of flooring,
is it on a cross space, a slab, a basement, insulation values in the walls,

(01:32):
insulation values in the ceiling,
which way the house is facing, northeast, south, or west, how many people live in the home.
All of these things go into consideration of properly sizing a system.
And so we take all that information. We gather all that. Our comfort specialists
take all that forward. It's just nothing that you have to do as the homeowner.
But we gather all that information. We put that into our software programs.

(01:54):
And it's able to calculate exactly what size of system that house and that family
needs that, A, properly and accurately keeps them comfortable.
And, two, is efficient to operate when it comes to the utility side of things.
Here's a question. What if a customer says, well, that sounds great,

(02:14):
but we were told differently by another company?
Does that happen or is everybody on the same page?
I wish everybody was on the same page, but unfortunately not.
The thing is, if they're not saying that, you can do your homework and do some
research, and you'll find that that is the proper way to do it.

(02:35):
Um, and if you have someone that comes out and says hey, that's that's not that's
not necessary It's not needed.
You know, you've got you know, this size of furnace now.
It's always worked. Great. Great Let's just go with that same size again Um,
you can go to find oftentimes you're going to have issues the new systems the
old systems like your old car You could get away with a lot more you could fix
a lot of things with a couple wrenches Right now you can't you got to have the

(02:57):
right computers and diagnostics and things and they have a lot of safety switches and things in place.
Your HVAC equipment is no different. And so the old systems,
what we thought may have been working great all these years,
may not been working just as great as you thought it was.
When you go to put a new system in, there's a lot of safety switches and mechanisms
and things on that furnace that's going to keep that system from not allow it

(03:20):
to work under certain parameters.
And so we want to make sure that that system is sized correctly so that you
don't have those issues. But if someone says that, I would ask them why that is.
Oftentimes, it's either A, they haven't had the proper training or don't know,
or worse yet, B, they do know that's necessary and they just choose not to because

(03:40):
they want to take the easier route, the faster route. Yeah, this is all good stuff.
Contact Nathan and his team at Schaefer Heating and Cooling.

They're going to calculate it properly, and you can definitely trust them.
