of August twenty twenty four. Starting in the Americas today.

In the United States, the Democratic National Congress has been
taking place in Chicago this week. Speakers have included President
Joe Biden, former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, vice presidential nominee

Tim Waltz, media personality Oprah Winfrey, and several former members
of Donald Trump's team who are now against him. Former
President Barack Obama spoke on Tuesday America's wedding per new chapter,
Ready for a better story. We are ready for a

president Kamala Harris, former First Lady Michelle Obama, made a
reference to a quote by Donald Trump that immigrants were
taking black jobs. Who's gonna tell him? Who's gonna tell
him that the job he's currently seeking might just be
one of those black jobs. At the time of recording

this podcast, Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris was
about to give her speech. In Colombia, Indigenous protesters have
blocked the important Pan American Highway between the cities of
Popayan and Cali, demanding recognition of an indigenous authority. An

explosion at the protest site killed one person, and a
local governor called the explosion a terrorist act, although it
isn't clear what caused the explosion. In Argentina, a cargo
ship has been quarantined in the Paranat River because of
a suspected case of empos Africa. In Kenya, eight police

officers have been arrested in connection with the escape of
thirteen prisoners, including a serial killer. Inspector General of Police
Gilbert Manseglie said that the eight officers were on duty
at the prison and said that an investigation had suggested
that officers were involved in the escape. In Botswana, a

diamond has been found which is believed to be the
second largest ever found in the world. The Canadian mining
company Lukara said that it had recovered the two thousand,
four hundred ninety two carrot diamond. The biggest diamond ever
found was discovered in South Africa in nineteen five, when

South Africa was a British colony and it was given
to King Edward the seventh. That diamond was cut up
and parts of it are still part of the royal
family's Crown Jewels Asia and Oceania. Israeli police say that

they have arrested for Israelis suspected of terrorist acts against
Palestinians in the West Bank after an attack last week
which killed a Palestinian man in Gaza. Rights groups have
expressed concern about a new evacuation order by the Israeli

Army telling civilians to leave the central city of Der
al Bala, and said that it had become a dangerous
combat zone. U S President Joe Biden has said that
he recently called Israeli Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and said that
a ceasefire and hostage release deal must be agreed. In

the Red Sea, a Greek oil tanker has been attacked
by Yemens who the rebels. Twenty five members of crew,
who are mostly Filipinos, have been rescued by an EU mission. However,
the mission has said that the oil tanker is now
a navigational and environmental hazard. New Zealand is attempting to

vaccinate native birds before the expected spread of a new
strain of bird flu. New Zealand has many species of
birds that are only found on the islands of New
Zealand and conservationists say that the new H five one
bird flu could wipe out whole species if it is

not tackled properly. In India, and ex flosion and fire
in a pharmaceutical factory has killed at least fifteen people
in Andhra Pradesh state. Europe, the European Union is planning
to introduce a new visa waiver scheme similar to one

held by the United States. Visitors from around sixty countries,
including the former EU member the United Kingdom, will have
to pay seven euros for the visa waiver before they
travel to the EU. The system is expected to start
next year, but a date has not been set. Ukraine's

army is continuing to make small advances in Russia's Kersk region,
and some reports have suggested that thousands of Russian soldiers
are at risk of being surrounded after Ukraine has destroyed
many bridges in the area. Russia's army is continuing to
make small advances in Ukraine's Donetsk region, and Ukraine has

ordered the city of Pokrovsk to be evacuated. Russia occupies
about twenty percent of Ukraine. In Bosnia, a shooting at
a school has killed three members of staff, but no children.
Police said that the shooter was a cleaner at the
school and that he had also shot himself, but survived

and is in hospital. Gun violence in Bosnia is rare,
and in Spain, a six year old child was rescued
by a Brazilian immigrant after being trapped on the outside
of a hotel balcony. Neighbours filmed the Brazilian worker climb

over a different balcony and shuffle along to rescue the child,
