Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning. This is send seven World News in seven minutes.
I'm Juliet Martin and today is Friday, the second of
August twenty twenty four. Starting in Asia. In Iran, Hamas

(00:25):
leader Ismail Hanie was killed on Wednesday. Hanie was killed
when an airborne projectile hit his residence. Thousands of pro
Palestinian protesters have protested the assassination. Many claim that the
attack was carried out by Israel, but Israel has made

(00:47):
no comment on it. In Bangladesh, police have fired tear
gas and stun grenades at protesters. Protesters were demonstrating against
the use of force by police during protests in July
where one hundred and fifty people died. Regional Deputy Commissioner

(01:09):
as Baha Ali Shaikh said, we requested the protesters to
move from the road, but they didn't listen and instead
attacked the police, forcing us to disperse them with tear
gas and stun grenades. In India, the Army has built a
metal bridge to rescue people stranded by the Kerala landslides

(01:31):
on Tuesday. The bridge is fifty eight meters long and
used to transfer equipment to the worst affected area. Also
in India, heavy rain has killed at least twelve people.
Nearly one thousand people were rescued from the Himalayas. The capital, Delhi,

(01:52):
received one hundred and forty seven millimeters of rain on
Wednesday in Europe. In the UK, a seventeen year old
boy has been charged with the murder of three girls
in a knife attack on Tuesday. False information on social

(02:12):
media claimed that the suspect was an Islamist migrant, leading
to anti immigrant protests. Police have said the attack was
not terrorism related and the suspect was born in Britain.
Prime Minister kir Starmer warned against a violent disorder organized online.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
Make no mistake whether it's in Southport, London or Hartlepool,
these people are showing our country exactly who they are.
Mosques targeted because they're mosques. Flare's thrown at the statue
of Winston Churchill, a Nazi salute at the Cenotaph. And

(02:55):
so I've just held a meeting with senior police and
law enforcement leaders where we resolved to show who we
are a country that will not allow understandable fear to
curdle into division and hate in our communities.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
Former British TV presenter Hugh Edwards has pleaded guilty to
making indecent pictures of children. Edwards was the highest paid
journalist of the British Broadcasting Corporation. Turkey has coordinated an
extensive prisoner swap involving Russia, Belarus, Germany, Poland, Slovenia and Norway.

(03:41):
This was the biggest East West prisoner exchange since the
end of the Cold War, involving twenty four prisoners. Africa.
South Africa has recorded a slight decline in rhino poaching
this year. The decrease in poaching is thought to be

(04:03):
due to de horning programs in South Africa. South Africa's
Environment ministry said given the organized and transnational nature of
the crimes involved, ongoing engagement and cooperation with other countries
is essential. Togo's President fore Nassingbe has kept Victoire Sidemejo

(04:28):
to Mega Dogby as Prime Minister. A new government will
be formed this week. Tanzania has launched its three point
one billion dollar railway. The railway aims to improve transport infrastructure.
It is part of a planned rail network of two thousand,

(04:50):
five hundred and sixty one kilometers the Americas. The G
seven Forum has said it is concerned about Venezuela's election results.
President Nicholas Maduro claimed victory in the election, but the
opposition has contested the result. In a statement, G seven

(05:14):
ministers asked Venezuelan representatives to publish detailed election results in
full transparency and to immediately share all information with the
opposition and independent observers. In the United States, a new
federal rule protecting LGBT students is blocked in twenty six states.

(05:39):
The rule came into effect yesterday. President Joe Biden asked
the Supreme Court to widen the rule's enforcement, but the
United States Education Department can only enforce the rule in
twenty four states. And in the Andes Mountains, glacier retreat

(06:00):
is happening faster than ever before. According to a new study.
Through carbon dating, scientists found exposed rock that hasn't been
exposed for more than eleven thousand, seven hundred years. They
suspect that the glaciers are smaller than they have been
since the last interglacial period one hundred and fifteen thousand

(06:23):
years ago. The Andes accounts for ninety nine percent of
the world's tropical glaciers. That's your world news in seven minutes.
A reminder that during August we only release episodes on
