Today’s guest is my friend Tim Ash, author, keynote speaker and advisor. For nineteen years he was the co-founder and CEO of SiteTuners – a strategic digital optimization agency for which he created over $1.2 billion in documented value for clients.

Tim is an expert in user-centered design, persuasion, understanding consumer behavior, neuromarketing, and landing page testing. In other words, he knows how people think, and that's led him to uncover some realizations about the state of the world (and the internet) that are uncharacteristically pessimistic for an episode of this show. However, I loved this talk and found it to be among the most important.

Tim's latest book is Unleash Your Primal Brain: Demystifying How We Think and Why We Act, which goes back to the fundamental “why’s” behind our actions from an evolutionary perspective.

In Part 1, listen as we discuss:

  • The evolutionary reason behind why the internet has become full of crap.
  • Why we care about celebrities even though we really don't want to care.
  • The big challenge of our times is community building and preventing polarization.
  • The internet has become a place of slicing people up into ad impressions.
  • After the death of his mom, Tim left the marketing field to climb his "second mountain."
  • We can't make decisions without using emotion according to our aversions and affinities.
  • What do we need the conscious brain for? New, non-dangerous things only.
  • The brain returns to modeling our social world almost all the time.
  • Why we've evolved the way that we have.
