Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to the smart,
wealthy stylist podcast.
I'm your host, emily Cardin.
Over here.
We're dedicated to helpinghairstylists manage their
finances, stay organized, healthy and manage their time
and mental well-being.
We focus on staying healthy inall areas of life and maximizing
productivity.
If you're a hairstylist lookingfor these things, then this is
(00:23):
the podcast for you.
Together, we'll avoid burnoutand step into being the smartest
, wealthiest stylist that we canbe.
You, you I always used to viewmyself in a certain way.
(02:15):
I had self-limiting beliefs andI never really thought that I
would do anything different thanwhat I was doing.
I always knew that we'd have towork until we were retired.
I would always be a hairstylistand I would just do hair.
There was no dreaming, therewas no expansiveness, there was
(02:38):
no what if?
There was no dreaming period.
But all of that boiled down tohow I viewed myself.
I didn't believe that I hadanything else in me.
Once I started viewing myselfdifferently and looking at the
possibilities, it was veryeye-opening.
Number four be careful what youlisten to and watch.
(02:59):
There's so many times in mylife where, looking back, i wish
I would have listened todifferent music, perhaps, or
watch different movies orwhatever, because a lot of those
had a huge impact on who Ibecame as a person.
When I was a teenager I lovedMiranda Lambert.
She was rough and tumble, tookno prisoners, just kind of a BA,
(03:25):
but still cute.
I just loved everything.
She was about.
That really kind of molded whoI was as a young adult.
I was a smoke-and-drinkin',rootin', tootin' Cowgirl and I
was out the life of the party.
If you crossed me I'd kick yourbutt.
I just wonder what would havehappened had I been listening to
(03:48):
other music or reading otherthings or finding my influence
from a different crowd, likewhere I'd be today.
I'm not mad.
I have some really really greatstories.
That's some funny party stories, for sure, but I do think it's
super important.
(04:10):
Number five give your life toJesus sooner.
I wasn't saved until I was like21.
I know a lot of people intoday's day and age definitely
don't go the Jesus route, butI'm gonna tell you it changed my
life.
It changed everything about howI viewed myself, how I
perceived who I was to the coreIt.
(04:31):
He helped me find value andthere's so many things in my
life that probably would havegone away had I not found Jesus
Because, you know, i believethat he strengthens my marriage.
I believe that he hasinfluenced me and changed me for
the better in every singleaspect of my life.
(04:53):
I lean on him every single dayand he has just made me such a
better person and he helps mewith every single aspect of my
life.
Number six listen to the HolySpirit on the inside of you.
So a lot of people like to callit intuition, or that little
nudging on the inside of you.
(05:14):
You know, when you hear it oryou feel that like, ooh, i
probably shouldn't do that.
And then you do it anyway andthen you're like, dang it, i
shouldn't have done that.
I should have listened to thatintuition on the inside of me.
That's the Holy Spirit and he'syour friend and he's your
helper and he's like, hey, girl, listen, you probably shouldn't
do that.
I really wish I would havelistened to him more.
I'm still working on that.
(05:37):
Number seven don't get intocredit card debt.
If there's anything that Icould have done differently in
my life would be not to havegotten into credit card debt.
I wish I would have never evenopened up a credit card.
I know that sometimes it'simportant to have one in case of
an emergency or whatever, butthat's why you have, you know,
cash reserve reservations andsavings for such set emergencies
(06:00):
.
But I preach to my kids all thetime do not get into credit
card debt.
There are other ways.
It's totally pointless.
Just don't do it and startinvesting as a child, a young,
young person, starting a RothIRA or a high yield savings
account or a CD, anything, something, anything.
Just do it.
(06:20):
Yesterday was the best day tostart investing and if you are
not investing, do it now.
Even if it's 10 bucks a month, something is better than nothing
.
Number nine apply yourself inwhatever you do.
In high school, i reallystruggled and then in
cosmetology school, i was justtrying to like rush through and
get out.
And then, after cosmetologyschool, i started building my
(06:41):
business and, like I always wasa go getter, but I don't feel
like I applied myself 110% ineverything that I did.
Um, but I've changed thatnarrative in my life and instead
of like getting there quicker,it's like quality versus
quantity.
You know, like I'm stickingthings out longer because I want
(07:02):
to be sure that the quality ofwhat I produce and the quality
of what I'm doing is so muchbetter than how quick I can get
it.
So apply yourself andeverything that you do, and even
if it takes a lot longer, that's okay, because the quality
of your work is going to befantastic.
Number 10 is wake up early.
There were so many days where Iwould sleep until noon or one,
(07:23):
but I would also stay out late.
So waking up early hascompletely changed my life and
it gives me time to myself.
It gives me time to do mypodcasts, it gives me time to
work out, gives me time to justgo out on the back porch and
drink a cup of coffee and listento the world.
Wake up.
It's peaceful, it's calming.
It's one of the best thingsthat I've ever done for myself
(07:45):
And I really encourage you tojust try it.
The hardest part is gettingyour feet to hit the floor, but
once you're up, it is worth it.
Number 11, eat whole rich foods.
Processed foods are just fullof junk and they make you feel
terrible.
And you know, when you starteating whole rich foods, if you
can at least get fruits andveggies in with every meal and
(08:08):
maybe not veggies with breakfast, but you could do sweet
potatoes or something, butanyways, just eating whole rich
foods.
It gives your body so muchenergy and clarity and mental
fog drops away and, like you, just feel so much better on
every level.
Number 12, just a little wordof advice.
Being popular isn't important.
Being known what you stand foris.
(08:30):
I wish I would have known thata long time ago, because I
always kind of chased after thatpopularity thing.
I or not necessarily I didn'tcare to be popular, but I just
wanted people to like me.
You know, it was reallyimportant for me to want people
to like me, and now I don'treally care what people think at
all, but what I do care aboutis that people know who I am and
(08:53):
what I stand for and that I'mhere with open arms, with no
judgment, and that they'rewelcome here anytime.
That's what I want to be knownfor.
Number 13 kind of goes in withdon't get into credit card debt,
but don't spend more than youmake.
By spending more than you make, you're shorting yourself more
(09:15):
than just the money in your bankaccount.
You're shorting yourself afuture and so many other things.
So by not making more, by notspending more than you make, you
can truly live your life to thefullest.
Number 14 wear the shorts.
My legs are not perfect.
I have varicose veins.
I, you know I have cellulite.
(09:37):
Nobody cares.
If you want to wear the shorts, wear the shorts, do it for you.
Number 15 this kind of goes inwith number 14 too.
Nobody is looking at you, dowhat you want.
I've told my daughter thisseveral times.
There's been times where she'sbeen like, oh I don't, you know,
(09:59):
they're all going to look at meand I said, honey, nobody's
looking at you.
There's not.
No one is paying attention.
I don't know why you thinkanyone's looking at you right
now.
Like and I don't mean that in abad way, it's just one of those
things that I think we allthink that people are judging
how we look, judging how wespeak, how we, you know, look on
(10:22):
social media, how our legs lookin the shorts, how we eat, how
we talk, how we look when we goout.
You know, like all these things, nobody's looking.
Just go and do what you wantand live your life to the
fullest, because it doesn'tmatter what they think anyway.
Number 16 marry wisely.
The partner that you choosewill either propel you forward
(10:45):
and build you up or bring it allback to the ground.
I'm so thankful that I marriedthe spouse.
That I did because he trulydoes support me and believe in
me and push me to do better.
And I know that the person thatyou choose to marry you know if
they make bad financialdecisions and you're making good
(11:05):
financial decisions they couldwreck your entire future.
Or if you're positive andencouraging and they are not,
they could really damage yourchildren when it comes time to
disciplining them whenever youknow you do have kids and
(11:25):
there's so many things that canbe in limbo if you marry the
wrong or the right person.
So try to find someone who isgoing to build you up, encourage
you, support you and push youtowards being a better person.
Number 17 see a therapist If youneed to work through something
and you need a non-biasedopinion or you know you're
(11:50):
dealing with anxiety ordepression.
I don't know why there's such anegative stigma around seeing a
therapist.
It can be one of the mostamazing freeing, liberating
things that you can do foryourself, and you can truly find
freedom by seeing a therapistSay you're sorry and forgive
others who have hurt you.
I know this can be really hardbut you know, whenever I
(12:14):
accepted Jesus, there were somethings I was able to let go of
because I realized that I don'thave to hold on to that anymore.
That is a burden that you donot have to bear, and by truly
forgiving that person that'sdone you wrong and moving
forward and say I forgive them,i don't hold, i don't have to
hold on to this anymore, you canfind true freedom in your life.
(12:38):
Number 19, do what you love.
If you like kayaking, go do it.
If you like riding horses, godo it.
If you like painting or doingpottery, you just have to be
intentional about your time, youknow.
Set it up to where you can doit, at least once a month,
starting out, or whatever.
Carve out the time to do whatyou love so that you can be a
(12:58):
better person for those aroundyou and for yourself.
Number 20, don't let yourclients dictate your pricing or
the services you offer.
You are the one that should befiguring that out.
On my website, whenever yousubscribe, you get a cost per
hour calculator sent right toyour inbox.
(13:20):
I'm getting ready to start asix-week class that goes over
all the things.
I'll be talking about that onmy next podcast, but you can go
check it out.
It's just so important to makesure that your prices are set by
you, not by emotions, not bywhat they want you to do.
(13:40):
If you are wanting to move toextension only clients and you
have all these clients thataren't extensions you have to do
what's best for you.
I understand you may want tokeep a couple of them because
you genuinely love them and carefor them, but there's no need
to make your living doing whatyou don't enjoy.
(14:01):
So just make sure that yourclients aren't dictating your
pricing or the services youoffer.
Number 21, take the class.
If you want to niche down anddo what you love, take a class
that will help get you closer tobeing able to do that.
Only that service, only.
Number 22, find your nicheearly and do the dream hair.
(14:23):
Number 23, count your cash andpay your taxes.
This is a huge one, becausewhen it comes to building money
for your future or, you know, purchasing power or whatever, if
you're not counting your cashin your checks, you're shorting
yourself.
If something happens to yourspouse, you're not going to be
(14:43):
able to buy something on yourown.
If you do need to financesomething, by not counting your
cash in your checks, you'redoing nothing but shorting
yourself.
You're being dishonest.
Once I started doing this, ittotally changed my financial
game.
It made me look better to mybank.
(15:04):
There was just so manypositives.
And you know, whenever youimplement systems in your
business, your business pays thetaxes.
So, yes, you're going to haveto pay more in taxes if you
count your cash in your checks, but that's okay, because as long
as you're implementing systemsin your business, your business
pays for that for you and youdon't even miss it anyway.
Number 24, allow others to helpyou.
(15:27):
There was a lot of times wherepeople asked to help me.
You know, like when I had mybabies, and there was various
situations that occurred and Ididn't want people to help me.
I don't know why.
I don't know if that made mefeel, you know, stronger or
whatever.
All it did was make my lifeharder.
So the second baby that I had,i was like, okay, i'll take all
(15:48):
the help.
And that goes into the nextquestion.
Number 25, ask for help if youneed it.
If there's something in yourlife that's causing you a great
deal of stress, ask for help.
Number 26, don't feel bad forsaying no.
If you don't want to do it, sayno.
There is nothing wrong withthat.
(16:11):
Number 27, make sure you stilltake care of yourself, even if
you have kids, prioritizingself-care and making sure that
you're getting what you needwill make you a better mom, a
better husband, a better familymember.
Whoever you're serving.
It'll make you better foryourself.
Even So, make sure that youprioritize self-care.
(16:31):
Number 28, move your body daily, whether it's a quick walk up
and down the driveway, stretching if you're doing an
exercise program, you knowyou're working out six days a
week.
Just move your body.
You will thank yourself later.
29.
Allow yourself to be proud ofwho you have become Every day.
(16:58):
even if we're just 1% better, that's 1% Just moving towards
being better for ourselves, being better for our spouses,
being better, just in general.
As long as you are workingtowards being better and you're
allowing yourself that, giveyourself a pat on the back.
(17:18):
That's something to be proud of.
Don't beat yourself up forsaying, well, yeah, i'm better,
but I'm still not where I wantto be.
That's okay, you are moving inthe right direction.
And allow yourself to be happyfor you.
30.
Whatever your goals are, acttoday as if they have already
happened.
Whenever I look at my goals, ivisualize already being
(17:40):
debt-free and being like yes, iam debt-free, i am putting money
away for our future.
I have all these thingsenvisioned in my mind and by
acting that they've alreadyhappened.
It helps you stay motivated andkeeps you moving towards your
goal 31.
The person you long to be isalready there.
(18:00):
You just have to choose today tostep into being that person.
It kind of goes along with thelast one.
You know, if you want to bewealthy and you want to be
living free, and you want to bekind and you want to be in
physical health and you havethis whole list of who you want
to be as a person, well, today'sa great day to choose to be
(18:23):
that person and you just have tostep into it.
If you want to be a socialmedia influencer, start posting,
be that person.
Pretend that you already have amillion followers.
I mean, you just have to say, okay, today is the day that I'm
going to choose to be what Iwant to be and I'm going to be
(18:43):
it.
That's the difference betweenyou and them, those people that
you're watching that are beingwhat they want to be.
It's because, every day, theychoose to be that person, even
if you don't have a millionfollowers.
Guess what?
Neither did they.
You just have to startsomewhere.
Choose to be that person andstep into it In number 32, be
(19:06):
kind to others.
You never know what someone elseis going through.
We all have a lot on our plates.
Not that I was never not kindto people, but I didn't think of
it in that way.
I always just assumed you knoweveryone has a lot going on and,
like I'm pretty nice to mostpeople, but there have been some
(19:26):
times where I've been not sonice and so I just want us all
to be intentional and if wetruly envision kindness as a
whole community and especiallyin the hair industry there are
some really catty backstabbystuff that goes on in the hair
industry and if we really focuson kindness and compassion and
(19:48):
being kind to one another andchoosing kindness, imagine what
that could do in our industry.
So I hope you guys enjoyedtoday.
It was a little bit differentthan anything else I've ever
done.
I feel like turning 32 is goingto be the best year yet I have.
I've finished writing my book.
(20:08):
It's in the finishing stages ofediting.
It'll probably be coming out inAugust and then I'm going to do
the audio book with it and soI'm going to record that and get
that published.
My six-week course is launchingthis fall and there's just so
many things that are happening.
And it's all happened because Ichose to be this person and I
(20:29):
chose to step into this role ofhelping other stylists become
their very best selves also, andI just want you to know that
whatever it is that you'rewanting to do, you can do it.
Just choose to be that personand then wash your face twice a
day, more some sunscreen.
It's all good.
So I'll talk to you guys nextweek and I hope you all have a
(20:53):
great day.
Bye, bye.
Thank you for listening intoday.
If you have a burning questionor a topic you want me to cover,
leave a review and ask thequestion in the review.
This is the best way to getyour questions answered.
Just remember you are a smart, wealthy stylist and you are
capable of anything you set yourmind to.
I'll catch you later.
(21:14):
Don't be a stranger.
