When you stop drinking alcohol for 30 days,
your body will go through atremendous amount of changes.
So let's start with the veryfirst benefit.
Now, the very first benefit isgoing to feel very, very
peculiar.
When you stop drinking alcohol,you stop putting a drug in your
body.
Not only is this a drug, butit's a poison, it's an addictive
drug.

And when you stop taking it, atthe beginning, not everybody
feels 100%.
So a lot of people will gothrough some level of
adjustment.
If you've read any popular stopdrinking book, they'll all talk
about this period.
But you might feel a very lowlevel of withdrawal.
Now I'm not here to downplay theseverity for some people who
stop drinking alcohol.
It can be a severe problem.

(00:41):
But my opinion, this is notmedical advice, this is my
opinion.
My opinion is that the fear thatalcohol companies put in people
when it comes to withdrawal andmaking it feel like stopping
drinking alcohol is dangerous ispushed a little bit too hard.
So I've spoken to a massivevariety of people who are
drinking half a bottle of wine anight, up to a bottle of wine a
night, and they are afraid ofstopping drinking.

But either way, if it's a worryof yours, if you are drinking
heavy, then you probably want toseek medical advice.
But for most of the population,for most of us, we're just gonna
not feel quite right.
And the important thing here isto realize that this is the
first benefit.
Not feeling great is actuallyyour body starting to heal.
It's repairing, your body isdoing its magic, and yeah, you

might feel a little bit poop.
Can't think of a better word.
And you might feel bad.
But how you approach these firstfew days and your mindset will
make a big difference.
If you see these negativefeelings as a benefit, as your
body repairing, then you cankind of get through it.
But if you're like, man, thissucks, I hate this feeling, I
feel terrible, and you're verynegative with your self-talk,

(01:44):
then it's gonna be a grind.
So you can expect in the firstfew days to not feel 100%, but
that is the first benefit.
Now, the second benefit is whenyou don't drink alcohol for 30
days, is the memory of what itwas like when you were drinking
are very close.
So days seven, days 14, days 21,days 28, the memory of how
things were when you drank isvery fresh.

So you can remember the badsleep, maybe hangovers, not
feeling 100%.
And what you've got in the first30 days of stopping drinking is
a contrast.
And that contrast is very, veryclear.
So what can often happen forpeople in the first 30 days is
they almost get to this peak.
So they'll get through this kindof like this adjustment period
where things aren't feelingquite right, and then it'll all

of a sudden be like thiseuphoria.
And it's like, oh, now I feellike me again.
And I've heard this many timesfrom the people I've worked
with, with my coaching company,with soberclear.com.
I hear people have abreakthrough.
And it doesn't always happen,but for a lot of people, because
the contrast is so severe thatthey kind of get through that
rough time and then all of asudden they're like, oh my gosh,
I feel amazing.

Now that feeling doesn't lastand it doesn't happen to
everybody.
It certainly happened to me whenI stopped drinking seven years
ago, but you can expect to feeljust so much better because you
can remember how bad thingswork.
It does level off, but in thosefirst 30 days, it's pretty
awesome.
And the third benefit ofstopping drinking for 30 days
are in your energy levels.
Now, in that first week, maybetwo weeks, energy can fluctuate.

(03:08):
I'm not gonna lie.
Some days you're gonna feeltired, lethargic, some days
you're gonna be bouncing out ofbed and feeling good.
But what should happen,depending on the severity and
depending on how long you'vedrank for, is energy levels will
start to stabilize and thenthey'll start improving.
And again, because we're talkingabout the first 30 days here,
the contrast and the memories ofbeing lethargic and kind of
drained because of alcohol,those memories are fresh.

(03:30):
So, of course, energy is goingto feel better because you can
remember how lousy you feltbefore.
We're not designed to drink apoisonous substance and put that
stuff into our body.
Alcohol will drain your energy.
So, again, just expect it maybeto fluctuate in the first few
weeks, but eventually it willstabilize and then energy will
start increasing.
And for 90% of people, probably95% of people, they're gonna

(03:53):
experience this in the firstmonth.
There are some people whosedopamine levels will be very up
and down, and the energy stuffmight not happen until days 30
and beyond.
Some of my clients, that'shappened with them, but most
people are gonna feel asignificant energy boost.
Number four, the fourth bigbenefit of stopping drinking for
30 days comes down to yourmental clarity.
For me, this was the number onebenefit.

This was the biggest benefit inthe early days of stopping
drinking.
Now, seven years later, it'sjust standard, right?
This is my baseline, I can thinkclearly.
But because I could remember thebrain fog and really not being
clear with my thinking, when I'dfinally stopped drinking
alcohol, it was like, oh, I canmake plans, I can think
critically again.
Now, clarity in itself is anamazing thing.
You're able to articulateyourself better, you're able to

(04:37):
solve better problems and biggerproblems and fix things and do
so much.
Whilst clarity is a nicefeeling, it's really what you do
with that clarity that counts.
Of course, that feels good, butthat can spill into every area
of your life.
But just wait till the tenthbenefit and we'll go deeper on
that.
The fifth thing, which is prettyobvious, are the financial
benefits.

(04:57):
What a lot of people don't do isif they're thinking about the
financial cost of drinkingalcohol, is they just think
month to month.
Okay, I don't drink and I savewhatever, 300 bucks, 500 bucks,
a thousand bucks, depends.
But we've also got to thinkabout the money that we could be
making.
When you've got more clarity,when you've got the other
benefits I'm going to talk aboutin a minute, your ability to add

value, create money, progress inyour career, all of these things
start improving.
Your executive functioning getsbetter, your creativity gets
better, so many things starthappening.
Now, obviously, if you'reretired, then it's a little bit
different.
But I know people who haveretired who have gone back to
work.
Not because they had to, butbecause they wanted to.
They wanted to give back.
And some of these retired peoplehave helped.
They say there was no way Iwould have done this if I kept

(05:40):
drinking.
I've worked with people who havestopped drinking alcohol and
started businesses.
So if we think about it, yeah,sure, you might save 500 bucks,
whatever, but that's nothingcompared to the opportunity cost
of drinking alcohol and thegains.
See, as humans, we're wired tonot want to lose things.
And we're much more afraid oflosing things than we are at the
prospect of gaining things.

(06:01):
But if you can use this first 30days of stopping drinking
alcohol and continue it, I mean,I don't want to exaggerate, but
that first 30 days could be thefoundation of literally tens of
millions of dollars.
No exaggeration.
It's what you do after the first30 days that's really gonna
count here.
But if you think back, if youstop for 30 days and continue on

that path, you have literallybroken a pattern of tens of
thousands of dollars wasted.
So the financial benefits arehuge.
The real thing with thefinancial benefits though is it
snowballs over time.
The sixth benefit are in yourrelationships.
Now, I can't promise that ifyou've drank for a long time and
you've your relationships havestrained because of alcohol, I
can't promise that all of asudden it's gonna go like that

(06:42):
and things are gonna be fine.
Often it's not the case.
When I drank alcohol, I caused alot of damage in my personal
relationships.
I'd ruined romanticrelationships, I'd upset
friends, I'd send texts topeople, I'd, you know, my family
kind of lost trust in me.
But not only that, but my familywere incredibly worried about
me.
But I'll be honest, I'm ayounger man.
I wasn't married when I stoppeddrinking alcohol.
And it wasn't like I'd beendrinking for 20 years and, you

know, really upsetting my wifefor all of this time.
But a lot of the people who I'veworked with, they are in that
situation where they have beendrinking for a long time and
alcohol has caused strain withtheir children, with their
spouse, with their family.
And stopping drinking for 30days, you can usually start to
see relationships repairing.
It doesn't mean that all of asudden everybody's gonna forget
and forgive.

(07:26):
Not everybody is going to.
But the good thing is that ifalcohol has caused strain in
your relationships, is you'redoing the most important thing
that you can do, which isstopping drinking.
The problem here is if you'vemade promises to your family and
friends or whoever you've upsetwith alcohol, and you've made
promises that you're gonna stopin the past and then relapse,
there's a possibility that whenyou stop for 30 days, people
aren't really gonna trust you.

(07:47):
They might be supportive, theymight be positive, but in the
back of their mind, they'reprobably thinking, here we go
again, which is why the first 30days should really be the
foundation.
Now we'll get to this in pointnumber 10.
Wait for that.
But the seventh thing that youcan expect, and the seventh
benefit in the first 30 days ofnot drinking alcohol is in your
self-confidence.
So when I stopped drinkingalcohol, what I did is I used

(08:07):
something called firstprinciples thinking.
This is a mental model where youreally break a problem down into
its component parts, you studythe individual component parts,
you put them back together andbuild a new worldview.
When I did this, the decision tostop drinking alcohol was
instant.
It literally felt like somebodyhad flicked a switch in my brain
and that was it.
Now, that sounds a little bitcrazy, and you know, most of the

people I end up working with,they're very skeptical when I
tell them this.
But I hired an academicpsychologist to go through my
data and go and look at thefeedback that we get on the
program, and he noted peopletalking about this theme in the
feedback.
They said that people felt likea switch got flicked.

This is written by an academicpsychologist with a PhD who has
peer-reviewed addiction researchpublished in his name already.
In full transparency, my companydid commission this guy, but he
goes and breaks down the sciencebehind what we do.
Now, because I'd made such aclear, unequivocal decision that
I wasn't going to drink again, Ifelt like I'd rebuilt that trust

(09:09):
in myself.
See, my problem is I'd promisedmyself that I wouldn't drink
alcohol more times than I cancount.
And I'd break that promise tomyself.
I'd say, right, Leon, todayyou're not drinking.
And then a week later, I'm backat the bar.
Sometimes I might go a month,sometimes two months.
But the problem is that spilledinto all areas of my life.
I stopped trusting myself.
So when I set a goal for, Idon't know, some fitness goal or

(09:32):
something like that, I've reallygot this terrible relationship
of following through with goals.
So then when I'd finally beatenit, the self-confidence came
back, the self-trust gotrebuilt, the self-esteem
improved.
But again, this is why the first30 days is really the stepping
stone into what's next.
The eighth benefit of stoppingfor 30 days will come to your
sleep.
Now, going back to the firstpoint, sleep can be up and down

(09:54):
in the first couple of weeks.
But usually at around week two,sleep will normalize, energy
will normalize, all that stuffwill happen.
And what I've experienced andwhat I've heard other people say
is they say that they forgotwhat a good night of rest felt
like.
They say that they feel likethey are sleeping the best
they've ever slept in theirlife.
The problem with alcohol is thatit does reduce something called

(10:14):
sleep onset latency, which isthe amount of time it takes you
to fall asleep at night.
And from experience, I know thisto be true.
If I've gone out boozing and Iget back home, I'm out like
that.
The problem though is itdestroys the quality of your
sleep.
So when people stop drinkingalcohol and things have
normalized and they're startingto feel a bit better, that's
when you can get some of thebest rest of your life.
And I don't know if this istrue, but there are athletes out

(10:35):
there that say that the numberone performance-enhancing drug
that they use is sleep.
Practice does not make perfect.

Practice with a night of sleep is what makes
perfect because you come backthe next day and you're 20 to
30% better in terms of yourskilled performance than where
you were at the end of yourpractice session the day before.
Wow.
I mean, sleep is the greatestlegal performance-enhancing drug
that most people are probablyneglecting in sport.

SPEAKER_00 (11:02):
Having perfect sleep helps them recover and feel
better and whatever.
Who knows?
Maybe that's their publicanswer, maybe they're filled
with performance-enhancingdrugs, really, but I'm just
joking around.
Sleep gets so much better, trustme.
Number nine is in your weight.
So you can expect some weightfluctuations, but you can expect
some weight to start fallingoff.
One of the problems with alcoholis when we drink alcohol, is our

(11:23):
body doesn't account for thecalories consumed by drinking.
So, for example, if you drink athousand calories worth of
vodka, your body doesn'tregister that as food.
In other words, if your basalmetabolic rate, if the amount of
calories that you need to eat tostay alive is 2,500 calories a
day, and you drink a thousandcalories, your body doesn't then
only want to eat 1,500 calories.

(11:43):
It still wants the full thing,the 2,500 calories.
And when you drink, inhibitionsare lowered.
So our food choices, ournutrition choices, can become
worse.
So you can expect some weight togo, you can expect some bloating
to go, some skin improvements tohappen.
And for some people, they'll getsome weight gain, but good
weight gain, especially ifyou're building momentum with

(12:03):
exercise.
But the tenth benefit and themost important thing of all is
that by the end of the first 30days of stopping drinking
alcohol, is you've got momentum.
And when you're here, you havetwo choices.
You either go back to the verything that did nothing for you
for your entire life, it's neveradded anything to your life, or
you continue not drinkingalcohol, you make your community
proud, you make your familyproud, and most importantly, you

make yourself proud.
