Unknown (00:03):
Oh, I'm sorry, did I
break your concentration?
Somewhere between science andsuperstition? To show you
(00:28):
Strange Aeons. Welcome StrangeAeons radio. That's Eric over
there. Yeah. That's Vanessa overthere.
Hello.
I'm Kelly. Hey, guys. Do youremember the big windstorm? We
had several days back?
Yeah.
I have a story to tell you. Letme preface this by saying a big
(00:52):
thank you to Leo, who sometimeslistens to the show who sent me
one of those weighted blankets.
I just got one of those abouttwo weeks ago.
Oh my God, this thing has beenamazing. I call it my thunder
blanket. She knew that I wasgoing through a rough stretch.
And she she sent me that and ithas really helped it helps me
(01:12):
sleep. It's great. I've beendreaming crazy dreams. Oh, no,
because I'm getting into REMsleep and staying in it. And so
Wow. But I had just thrown it onthe bed. And in the middle of
the night. Oh, I don't know.
Maybe Maybe later, two, three inthe morning. I wake up and I'm
just dying because I had justthrown it on top of the
(01:34):
Comforter and I'm under theunder the and so but these
things are so heavy. Yeah, thatyou can't just whip it off. When
you're lying down. You're like Idecided to just push the
Comforter from below. Certainly, boy. And then and I listened to
sleep sounds from my Alexa. Andall of a sudden I see out of my
(01:58):
side window, my bedroom windowwhich faces nothing but a
building. I see this massiveflash of white Whoa, when Oh
shit. The Alexa goes off andeverything goes off. Whoa, oh,
no. And I start hearing thiscrazy sound. And I'm thinking
well, this is the wind but itsounds so bizarre Did something
(02:19):
happen like, well, we justbombed or something because it
was it was like a, a horrormovie sound like, like a giant
ant coming over the hill orsomething it was. And I was kind
of freaked out. And I thoughtwell, I hope that something next
door didn't just blow up. And soI'm gonna put my clothes on I'm
(02:40):
going to go see what's going onout there. And you know, mind
you is three in the morning. Soeverything is pitch black, I
stumble out with my little phoneflashlight, I put my clothes on
out here in the living room. Andthen I I make my way down this
stairs of this place, which isalso still pitch black and scary
(03:01):
now. And I make it outside. AndI can hear that sound. And it's
coming from somewhere down onthe waterfront. It's far away.
And it was really creepy. Imean, it was given me the
creeps. And so I make my way outto the Main Street. And you
don't realize how pitch black itis when there's like not even a
(03:24):
light on in a building much lessthese street lights or anything.
All I can see is that the streetis empty. There's a little black
smudge at the end of the streetand it's my car and I can only
tell it's my car because there'sa little red dot flash on show
in the theater arms on. And, andthe wind is blowing so hard.
It's barely sprinkling, butevery raindrop that's hitting me
(03:45):
is like a needle. It's hittingso hard. And for a moment, I'm
just sitting there, likereveling in nature. I'm like,
Wow, this is amazing. And then Isee just in the intersection of
the main street down there. Alittle black smudge. It's a
person standing in theintersection at three in the
(04:08):
morning in the pitch black, andit starts walking towards
Oh, no.
And you guys, I am notembarrassed to say this. I don't
think I have ever been as scaredin my life as I was just that. I
mean, my heart just startedgoing crazy. And I was almost
(04:28):
petrified with fear. Becausepart of me, the smart normal
part of me was like, this is ahomeless person who thought this
would be a good time to take awalk in the middle of the street
I guess in the middle of thenight during a massive
windstorm. Sure, but the part ofme that's been reading and
writing and watching scarymovies for 50 years. That part
(04:50):
was like a well clearly thedevil has come to Everett and
I've got my little phoneflashlight on so I quickly
turned that off and I'm like ohHey, I'm, I'm, you know, come
back into the alley across fromthe interests of the place. And
I backed myself up against thebrick building that we can see
right here from the window.
Because I want to see if thisguy walks past, but then I
(05:11):
started thinking, golly, what ifhe doesn't walk past? What if he
turns in the alley here, right?
And so I I'm like, okay, fuckthis, I'm getting back in the
place. Well, I automaticallylock the apartment, building
door when I leave, just alwaysdo. And now I can't see a
fucking thing because it's pitchblack. In my hand, I'm feeling
(05:34):
my key. I'm okay, this is thisfeels like the dorky. But then
I've got my hand out and I'mtouching the door trying to find
the lock. So I finally get inthere, throw the deadbolt and
everything. Come back up thosecreepy stairs in the hallway,
get back into my apartment. AndI'm like, Okay, calm down. Calm
down. That was clearly just someweirdo out there. You know, and
(05:56):
I'm also like, well, I'mprobably not going back to sleep
anytime soon. But I do have towork in the morning. So I should
at least get back in bed. SoI've got my little flashlight on
my phone. You know, that's,that's worthless. And I'm
kicking my shoes off and I walkinto my bedroom. And there's
someone in my bed.
(06:16):
Oh my gosh.
It's just the Comforter that I'dpushed off. But for a moment, I
was like, fuck this night.
That that last thing I'veexperienced. I'm sure we all
have several times like you seethe meme close on a chair during
(06:39):
the day. Close on a Jared night.
The walking through the middleof the street.
That was fucking terrifying. Youguys, I swear to God, if I have
ever been that scared, I wasprobably six years old. And you
know, it was a Boogeymansituation. Because this was like
a Primal Fear. I have never beenso petrified with fear. Well,
(07:02):
the problem is,even if it's not some
supernatural being after you.
It's still so crazy. Probably ahomeless dude in the middle of
the night, standing around in awindstorm to nuts to know that
he shouldn't be therein an intersection. If he had
been on the sidewalk. I probablywould have thought well, this is
weird, but maybe he's like me.
Yeah, check it out what's goingon? Yeah, standing in the middle
(07:25):
of the intersection. He wasliving creepy. He
was enjoying the freedom. Thefreedom of standing in the road.
No red lights will stop.
No cars coming down here. AmI I'm squinting. So I see this
little black.in all thisblackness, but I'm holding my
flashlight. So he clearly seesthere's somebody there and then
(07:45):
starts walking towards them.
Maybe he went in a nice friendlychat. But that's what I was
afraid of.
That's actually why I would haveleft. Like I don't want to have
a conversation. Fuck it. I'll gofind a tree to stand underneath.
Yeah, we didn't even lose power.
We just had like leaves thrownall over the place.
(08:07):
The best part was I did finallyfall asleep, you know about a
half hour before my alarm wentoff. And I wake up the powers on
and everything. And if not forthe fact that I was wearing my
clothes and my bedmight have wondered if the whole
thing had been a dream. Whiledreams. And one of the weirder
things they used to moving uphere from Idaho, where there's
no trees really, except for onespeople plant and stuff. So we
(08:30):
had maybe five power outages inthe 15 years. I live there and
whatever. And here you get itusually have a power outage at
least once a year, if not acouple times a year from some
limb falling on something. So itwas very weird when I first
moved to like, power's out.
Everybody else like happens?
(08:53):
Yeah. Okay. Absolutely. I mean, being growing up on the island,
which our infrastructure forpowers, not great. In fact, what
happens is because we have a tonof trees, and just you know,
some guy in the 60s went aroundand stuck up, you know, stapled
a bunch of power lines onto somepoles. So when our power goes
(09:15):
out, or part of a co op, sopeople we know, get into trucks
in the middle of the night andstart driving around with a
giant spotlight trying to figureout where it went down.
Meanwhile, nowadays due toFacebook, people post Hey, it's
over on my streets. Oh, and theyYeah, they go and they find it
(09:35):
and it's very like, you knowduct tape and bootstrapping and
you know, we always say a bigthank you to them when they get
the power going again, but yeah,we our power goes out all the
time. It was a kid it would belike weeks at a time. So yeah,
I'm very I'm like, Oh, I don'thave to. It's a word of modern
world like maybe I don't have tomake Top Ramen on the top of a
(09:58):
woodstove. For two weeks runningWow,
the only thing I really worryabout when the power goes out is
the aquarium. Oh of course.
You have to oxen Ajay to waitwith your legs and made it
a little cup again a couple ofoxen you can do that dude.
(10:23):
Hey guys, I watched this moviethat's been getting a lot of
buzz brand new and it is calledpsycho Gorman.
I do not know what this is. Iwatch that too.
Why knock that off my list?
Oh, no.
Did you think about it, Eric?
If you loved the Power RangersTV show in the 90s. The US
(10:46):
version? Maybe the Japanese oneas well. You probably will
really like this movie. I wasnot a huge fan of the Power
Rangers style.
Oh, no, Iwas. I was actually really
excited about this one. I lovethe image they released. Because
I was I was thinking it was a2020 release, which you know,
did the festival things. Buttechnically, it's 2021 release.
(11:07):
Because it came out like onJanuary 6 or something. But
there's this great image of thelittle girl looking kindly
psychotic with the creaturebehind like, well, this looks
like fun. And your response wasupon watching it.
Well, there's there's one tropeI hate in general in films, and
(11:30):
that is the precocious child Oh,my movie is about the precocious
childor you're being polite with that
word, man. She's uh, she wasobnoxious. And she was mean to
everyone.
I think that was the joke. Imean, it's really, it. It really
works as a kid's film that has aton of gore in it. Yeah. So it's
(11:53):
kind of fun for that. But Ithink that as a kid, I might
have been very, very annoyed bythe kid the lead. Yeah.
Where was this available on?
Is it like a shutter thing? Itwill be on shutter shortly
because it is a shutteroriginal. But they I guess felt
strong enough about it that theyput it out as a rental.
(12:15):
No, not I rented on Amazon andthen after I ran is like the
shutter logo because I'm like, damn it.
Oh, well, I imagined to be therenext month.
Yeah. It was the effect justlike his other film. He did. The
lovecraftian kind of one. Yeah.
All the effects are fun. Thecreatures are fun. It gives you
a solid hint to the beginning ofwhat you might be in store with
(12:38):
their home planet being namedGygax. Yeah. Okay. And if the
little kid had been about asawful as she was about half the
movie, I probably would haveenjoyed it a lot more. But at
some point, it felt like thiskid kind of needs to evolve and
change as a character. Shereally doesn't even in the end.
(13:00):
She doesn't Not at all. But itbut it's getting good reviews,
man. I mean, it's 90 somethingright now on Rotten like 93 or
something.
Yeah. So that's why I wanted tobring it up. I think that there
is an audience for this. It isjust
not me. Yeah, I would say like Isaid, if you really loved
Ultraman Ultraman was better.
But if you really loved like thereal low rent version of Power
(13:23):
Rangers, you'll probably reallylike it. There's a lot of the
villains of Power Rangers, especially in this movie with
the way over top the active andstuff.
Yeah, I would agree. Well, Ichecked out a film that um, I
remember hearing about beforeCOVID came out and I think I saw
(13:43):
some like trailer for it orsomething. And then it kind of
disappeared for a while and Isaw it pop back up again, which
is synchronic Have you seen thisyet? for about an hour into it?
Yeah, Iwas like, upset that you guys
showed up on time. Okay, cuz Iwas I was digging it. You're
(14:04):
digging it or you're not diggingit?
I really disliked Wow, okay. Um,I think there's some really good
ideas in there. I'm not going totell you obviously anything that
happens. But the language ofcinema is significantly lost. On
the people who are making thisfilm, they don't know when to be
(14:25):
in a shot size of any specificrange. They don't know when to
be in a close up or a mediumshot or a wide shot. They have
no idea that when you're in ahigh stakes emotional moment,
you should be at a close up orwhen you want to tell people
where you are, you should be ina wide shot. I was getting
incredibly frustrated. Andunfortunately, this is by the
(14:47):
people who are going to betaking over moon night. So that
made me a little nervous. Thefirst of those films we've seen
because no okay because they doknow The Senate language of
cinema,I would hope so. But like,
I can't tell from this movie, other movies are full of it. The
first one they did the super, super low budget one where it's
(15:08):
the two guys in a cabin. I can'tthink of the name of is full of
that. I mean, they do really so.
I don't know what might be theirmess. You know, they always say
like the go back to the oldPicasso thing. You learn how to
do it perfectly. And then youcan mess with it. So maybe
they're messing with it andyou're just not for it. You're
not there for it. Like they go,you know what, this should be a
(15:32):
close up. We're doing theopposite. This should be a wide
angle, we're doing the opposite.
Sounds like you know, you'relike nope, not for me.
I don't, I doesn't feelpurposeful. It feels clumsy. And
I think that's where I'mfrustrated. I like again, like I
like the concept. And I thinkthat they're extremely good at
interesting frickin concepts.
But I'm nervous. I'm, we'll see.
(15:55):
We'll see what happens. I hope Ihope I'm wrong. I really want to
be wrong. Butyeah, you're not the first
person to say that they didn'tlike this film. I have to say
that I'm kind of loving it aboutan hour in well, and I love the
because I was thinking tomyself, Wow, this looks so
unusual. And I loved the shotdecisions. No, no, this is
really interesting looking.
(16:21):
Becausethe endless was full of that
kind of stuff to the endless hasreally wild strange, it feels
but the MLS is like feels waymore like a film in the US.
I don't like me talking aboutthe lodge or it's like, oh, wow,
here we're doing a sighting dipthe ladders the other way
around, you could absolutely seethe direct.
(16:43):
Get go. And it's got all of thisRight, exactly. I would say to
me, you know how Wonder Woman1984 felt like, people had no
clue like it went off the rails.
And you're like, I don't knowwho directed this action
sequence. But it's bad. I don'tknow why we're like in her
village again. What lesson did Ilearn? Who knows? I don't know
how this is applicable to therest of the film. really
(17:06):
confused? Does she do anythingthrough the entire film hurt to
say?
I'm looking forward to watchingthis one now. Partially because
the endless spring andresolution? I think they're all
fantastic. Ihaven't seen resolution I you
know, I am willing to say maybethey're experimenting, but I it
felt like a hot mess to me. AndKelly, I hope that you do enjoy
(17:30):
the whole thing. I'm lookingforward to you getting through
the final bit. And you know, Ican't wait to hear what you
think through the entireexperience, not just the first
hour because there's more. Um,well, like I always say, I
actually love it. When I hearpeople say, Oh, I love this
movie. And then somebody elsesay I fucking hated it. What do
(17:52):
you think? That tells me thatit's art. Now we're discussing
it. And it's people differently.
There's, like I said, there'ssome really I mean, that opening
scene is unbelievably good.
unbelievably good. That is someof the best, like concept
conceptual like introducingsupernatural elements I've seen
(18:13):
in a long time. But then it'slike the main plot. I just want
it. I have so I've so many morequestions than I have answers.
And it's not questions aboutlike, the supernatural stuff.
It's like, what is this guy'sjob? Like, why? Who's this?
Who's his friend? And why arethey like they did this
together. But they didn't dothis. And they're in this.
(18:35):
Anyway. Sorry. I will let youget there.
Yeah, well, the best part is anhour into it. I was thinking I
was thinking to myself, I can'twait to see what they do with my
Mac now.
I was just gritting my teethgoing. No, no, it has to be
(18:55):
better. It has to be better somuch depends on them not being
awful. It really felt to me likethis is somebody who made their
first feature about two yearsout of film school. It felt like
that's what it felt like as faras just the cinema language was
going but and maybe the scriptanyway, anyway.
(19:17):
Well, okay, I'll go with onethat I think Chris, the surprise
for me of the new year so far.
Kelly's recommendation of HarleyQuinn. Friday. Oh,
yeah. So much fun.
You know, if you're not sure ifyou're wanting to watch a
cartoon about Harley, pop on thefirst I don't know, maybe 10
minutes at most filming of thisand if you don't realize you're
(19:39):
watching something very, verydifferent. Then he would usually
see on a Saturday morning. It'sso good.
I have to say everybody kepttelling me to watch it. And I
was of that mindset. I was like,I don't like this character. So
I don't think I'm gonna likecartoon about this character.
And then I binge both seasonscould not stop watching it.
(20:01):
It's been super it's funnybecause off of your
recommendation just like Eric, Ijumped on and I only got through
the first three episodes butlike back to back because I was
so excited about it and likeyeah, after 10 minutes, it does
start to feel initially like ohyeah, like Saturday morning
cartoon fare like this totallyfeels like it rhythmically and
the way they're producedpresenting things, and it feels
(20:23):
like I'm not sick gargoyle sowell, yeah. And then all of a
sudden, it shifts gears soquickly, and you're like, whoa,
whoa, okay. Cool. Mmm hmm. Allright. And then to the point
where I was like, is this gonnabe too much? Like, I hope they
come back a little bit because Iwant to like, do something other
(20:43):
than watch like gore andswearing. But no, it's so good
is so good.
I have to say, you know, JamesGunn has his Suicide Squad movie
coming out and King Shark is init. And I'm like, Oh, I don't
think you're gonna be able tobeat the King Shark in the
Harley Quinn cartoon. Good.
I like that. They chose to makethe bane the Chris Nolan ban.
(21:06):
That was really good. Andeverybody take makes fun of him
all the time. Oh, my God. He'ssuch a he's such a great. I want
to say gentle soul. I don't knowif that's the right word. But
I also like that hiscatchphrases? Well, I will blow
this up then. It doesn't workout in his favor. He's gonna
(21:27):
explode it.
Yes. And they do a wonderfulbalance of no poison ivy is
actually that's really freakingpowerful. What she can do. And
they, they up on that and Inever Harlequin came out in that
period when I was just in the90s and stuff when I really
wasn't reading a lot of comics.
So I completely missed her. Ihadn't seen the Suscribe movie
that ncrt couldn't film. This isreally the first deep dive I've
(21:50):
had into her as a character. AndI think it's gonna be rough to
find anything else after thisone.
She read um, White Knight, yet?
Not the one where the Joker isScott Snyder.
Yeah, that was that one's prettygood. Yeah,
I like that one because it itdoes address the modern Harley
Quinn. But it does the oppositewhere it's like, this fucking
(22:15):
chick with their big fuckinghammer and whatever. Like and
they address like the negativeaspects of her character, which
I thought was reallyfascinating. So it's really fun
to watch somebody, like enjoythe positive aspects. But um,
the Hartley movie that came outwith last, Oh, God, I don't
know, was it last year, last year, 10 years ago,
(22:35):
something like that. Soso strangely, last year,
talking about the birds of preybirds of
prey. That was very, I enjoyedit a lot. I thought it was a
pretty fun film, so I didnot enjoy it. And that's why I
wasn't looking forward to this,sir.
Absolutely. But yeah, other thansuicide.
(22:55):
It was.
Maybe that's because my bar wasso low.
The advantage of not being ahuge DC fan. Oh, it's so true.
People say the DC DC movies areas I watch them.
Well, and Harley popped up. Herorigin was in the Batman
animated series that Bruce Timmdid and that show is
(23:19):
unassailable. As far as I'mconcerned, that thing is
perfect. So and I always likedher Harlequin outfit and all
that so that you know when theysex her up and everything for
the for the boys. I was alwayslike, I don't feel like this
character needed that right?
Yeah, but in this cartoon, itcertainly works. Yeah. So I
started watching one division.
(23:44):
Yeah,I have a theme largely because
it's been a while the reactionI've seen has been so incredibly
generic and I want to do Iwatched all of Harley Quinn last
like week and a half. So I waswatching that and so it just
it's not that I don't want towatch it. I just haven't washed
it yet. You have to watch youare the first positive reaction
of I've heard I've heard Well,that's not true. I've heard a
(24:07):
couple positive but most of themare like well, it's not as good
as I was hoping but it's stillpretty good. And a lot of wow,
this is really dumb.
Well it's dumb if you look at itat face value. If you're like oh
like it's a 50s sitcom oh it's awhatever sitcom you know as
(24:29):
things evolve, but things arenot you know consistently that
something is wrong and pickingthat those pieces out I find
very very interesting. ButKelly, I would love to know what
what you thoughtkind of math on it to really,
Episode Three has come out nowand stuff is finally happening.
Yeah, and so I'm moreinterested. Okay. But the first
(24:51):
episode I was thinking tomyself, Oh, no, they've they've
made this so much like A sitcomfrom the 50s that I'm getting
exactly the same pleasure out ofit if I was watching an episode
of my three songs, yeah, Ithink that's something I liked
about it. I was like, notbecause I don't I actually hate
sitcoms like deeply for the mostpart hate sitcoms, but they did
(25:14):
such a good job of replicatingthat feel, in an era where like,
it's almost hard to rememberwhat that was like and how to do
it. But I was really impressed.
And then you get these, like, every single commercial has some
hint as to what the fuck isgoing on, at least somewhere in
(25:34):
it. So there's, I don't know,there's a lot of little weird,
deep, interesting moments asonly 25 minutes long, or 23
I wonder you are significantlyyounger. And I wonder if younger
kids are enjoying this morebecause it seems a little
unusual because it's so close toa 56 in the 60s and 70s. Whereas
(25:58):
somebody like me who actuallyhad to sit through that shit,
because we only had threechannels and we watch whatever
was on fucking TV. reruns of B,which that's what you got. And
this is so much like that raisedme to something I lived through
that it's not a goodness seljuqfeeling it's a I was born to
this one. It was new, right? I mean, I lucked out
(26:18):
because the things that I grewup with as far as that caliber
were like Gilligan's Island andBrady Bunch saw a lot of those
two things on some kind offorced. This is all that's on TV
right now kind of situation. SoI didn't I never really grew up
with anything older or even inblack and white. Like that just
(26:39):
wasn't part of that caliber. Soit is kind of fascinating to me.
That's true, but I know it'slike it's because I know it's
temporary. I can put up with alot.
Yeah, I'm very eager to see howit will go on now that something
major has happened. Sure. Yeah.
So I'm looking forward to it. Idon't like that actress. Oh,
sir. Olsen okay. And I was alittle surprised to find out
(27:04):
that was Mary Kate and Ashley'solder sister. You only just
found out I only just found outit started making sense to me
why I disliked her. Oh, cuz Idislike them as well. Yeah,
but she's actually acting.
She acts very well in a 50sitcom style, which seems like
(27:26):
she was she was very frustratingto watch in The Avengers films
in Age of Ultron because I'veseen her in that indie film that
like kind of indie culty semihorror film, she was married
something something something ithas like four female names in a
row and creepy and good and sheis unbelievably awesome in it.
(27:50):
So I kind of had highexpectations so when I saw her I
felt like she was superunderutilized or poorly dressed
Mary Kate and Ashley Halloweenknow
are people listening who knowwhat I'm talking about? And they
agree with me. Oh, man, but no,she she has some chops. I'm so
(28:14):
watching her be underutilized. Iwas incredibly frustrated by so
I was like, Oh my gosh, she hasto act even if it's outside of
what I understood that characterto really be like. I was just
enjoying the fact that she gotto like have a range and Paul
Bettany. Who doesn't love PaulBettany.
I love all that. And I reallylove the characters from the
(28:37):
comics, right? And it does feelto me like they are pushing
towards a particular storyline.
If you guys are familiar withthe House of M storyline?
No, but I'm going to get thatcomic.
I think that's kind of wherethey're going with this. And I'm
like, Okay, if if this turns outto be like maybe a prequel to
The Doctor Strange movie, and hehas to set things right after
(28:58):
she has changed the world thenI'm like, Okay, I'm fine with
it.
I suspect from again, the thingthe little hints and things that
have happened throughout thehouse event is probably within
the scope.
What I like a lot about the ideawhether it's good or not the
idea that there's a Marvel show,Marvel produced Marvel created.
(29:19):
That is not, hey, here's oursuperheroes going out and
kicking ass. It is somethingdifferent it is. Because that's
what happened to strongly in the80s and then moving like The
Dark Knight and some of thewatchmen and stuff where comic
books went from kind of generic, beat up things to really
(29:41):
freaking deep storylines. Andnow the Marvel movies have
opened the door for enough of itthat you can go really weird and
maybe have some big success. Soit's whether I end up liking it
or not. I think it's cool thatsomething like that is out
there.
Yeah, and I really liked Theyput all their chips in, they
(30:02):
took, you know, two bigcharacters, they didn't go for
some side character. They didn'tgo for some unknown thing, some
side side property that was safeto do. They went ahead and took
like two main characters fromtheir series and stuck them in
like, a show or even maybe evenminiseries together. And like
actually produced severalepisodes rather than, you know,
(30:25):
breaking formula is incrediblyrisky. And I like that Disney is
willing to take these kinds ofrisks. Yeah,
pretty cool. So I don'tknow. We'll see. We'll see where
things go. I'm happy to be thethe Outland the Outlander on
this one.

Well, we'll come back in acouple of weeks, and I'll have

the opposite. I know. That'swhat makes this big, beautiful

democracy in action, and we'llsay which side I land on each
one. Okay, well, I also got tocheck out another really fun
(31:06):
piece that I was really excitedabout, because I had heard a
review like, a month ago aboutthis, it came out in the UK
already. And I was like, Where'sthis film? I want to see this
film. Another disaster moviecalled sky fire. Do
you find them all haven't evenheard of this one?
Okay, so I am gonna blow yourminds. All right, boy.
(31:30):
Imagine there is a inactive butpreviously active volcano. Now
imagine a super billionaire.
egocentric guy builds a resortson that mountainous volcanic
thing that has definitely is notgoing to go off for another 100

years at least. And then richpeople go and hang out on it.
And then it explodes.
What he could have seen this.
Like, it's everyone knows what'sgonna happen. But that just
makes it so much better. It'sactually a really good night.
It's a nice little disasterphones.
(32:11):
Yeah. I'm blanking on the nameof the Morgan one where Morgan
Freeman was the president. Oh,um, Oh, that one came out about
the same time or something.
Tonight, London Has Fallen? Oh,no, no, the volcano movie.
Oh, are they're all livingthose either volcano or Dante's
peak? Oh, Dante'speak? Sure. Yeah, is
(32:33):
it because that's theirdescription sounds kinda like
zombies.
It's like Dante's peak meetsJurassic Park.
I don't know what to do with.
I mean, it's got a lot of that,like, I don't care about the
danger. I'm gonna make thisamazing Park and there's people
(32:54):
there. Like, you know, likethere's real danger. It's not
dinosaurs, but it is somethingof that caliber. And then on the
same angle, you also have theselike volcanologists, who are
like studying things and lovingSpock. Getting all that kind of
thank you for just moving rightback.
Considering considering it's aJapanese production, or sorry,
(33:17):
Chinese cheese, I apologize. AChinese production, which has
like 8 million Chineseproduction labels that come up
before the start of the film. Itis really pretty good and fun. I
suggest watching it in Chineseplease do not watch it and
dubbed it's real, real rough andup. I had to stop the filming.
Go on. Rewind. There's some badacting in there. Oh, I'll
(33:43):
happily say that. But it'sfrickin fun. Anything you're
like, Oh, that's gonna come intoplay later.
It does. While you're talking. Ilooked it up and looked at the
poster. It looks like the posteris produced an hour on 97
It's so good.
So we'll get right into the youknow, so no, no English actors
and they didn't bringHollywood Jason Isaacs is the
bad guyis the bad guy. Okay, yeah.
(34:06):
So he's the only guy I thinkhe's the only white white
person. But then like, yeah, yeah, no, he's the only white
person thatOkay, cool. Well, it sounds like
you love it. And that's goodenough for me. I will not watch
this.
Hey, we agreed on previousdisaster films. So maybe that's
(34:28):
a maybe that's somewhere whereyou can come together in a sort
of thanksgiving like settingdate.
Let's see. Oh, another one. I'vegot I've still I'm still pulling
out from the 2020s that Iwatched.
Oh my god, you really went forit? Yeah. The
one called the owners. Hmm. It'sstar booster. Okay. It stars the
(34:48):
shit. What's her name? Stark theyoungest start girl is
right. Right. The lead and I seesomething that Yeah. And yeah.
And so and they Cast is reallygood. It's not original. But
it's fun in that it is sort ofa. The One was that movie, I
(35:12):
think, I don't know if hislights out or no don't breathe,
or they break into the blindguy's house and he takes a shout
out of him for a while. It'ssort of a version of that. But a
little more surrealist, becausethe older woman of the house is
very bizarre. And they do someweird things like fog the house
(35:34):
and they're trying to workthrough the hair. But it starts
off really, really well. And thesuspense is really, really good.
And then when it goes strange,it gets a little too strange.
Because it's so solid and sostraightforward from the
beginning that I go Okay, thislooks like a good invade the
house but invaded the wronghouse kind of movie. It's kinda
(35:58):
doesn't work, which isunfortunate, because it was
really good for the first part.
It's not bad to watch. I mean,it didn't make didn't even make
my mentions of the year. Iwasn't upset. I watched it. It's
good. It's just not it juststarted off so good. Like, Oh,
man. Okay. So if you think thebeginnings a little stilted in
two, I've seen this all before.
(36:19):
Keep watching. You're probablylike it more than I did.
Alright, I saw the poster forit. And the poster looked. So
derivative of every other kindof poster. I thought, well, I'm
gonna pass on this.
Yeah. Yep. This is true. Yeah,I've had the 2020 underneath it.
So I was like, click.
(36:39):
I found it really frustratingthough, because every time I'd
go for 2020 film, it would turnout to either be 2019 or not
released yet. It'd be like, Oh,yeah, one loves this movie. I
cannot get ahold of at all.
Yeah, yeah. There'sa lot of there was a lot of
those especially the other forme the other side where it's
like, Oh, this looks great. Oh,could actually comes out in
2021. Yeah, it's just on itsfestival run now. Exactly. Or
(37:00):
festivals. Maybe I could see.
But no is December. So those areall that do?
Well, and dirty little secrethere. Whenever I see something
is doing a festival run. Ialways reach out to Eric and I'm
like, can you ask these guys tosend you a screener for possible
inclusion in the film vessel? SoI can watch it.
(37:23):
That's a good tactic.
Really? Oh, yeah. And somereally good shit. Yeah. But then
the other side of the coin.
There's ones I can't believethat was submitted and you
didn't play it. I'm gone. I'mfine with that. That grisly
sequel that's coming out. GeorgeClooney, and whoever else is in
there. was submitted to cryptocon last year. Oh, man. And, you
know, I now appreciate the badmovie, right? Jesus This is just
(37:47):
Whoa. But you could have playedit Look at all the press. It's
getting. Yeah, it's nice. Andthen everybody go wow, this
little cryptic con Film FestivalI've never heard of played stuff
like this. I'm okay.
That's interesting. I mean, it'sit's such a different viewpoint
(38:08):
to be in charge of the filmfestival especially when you're
maintaining like a certainquality Yeah,
I don't know. Yeah, but usuallywhen scholars end up getting
played it works great.
Well that's because they've beenplayed at fantastic so I you
know, you know you're gettingsomething quality. Yeah. Alright
guys, should we take a littlebreak and then come back and
(38:30):
talk about destination hora.
The wait is over. It's locatedin Pigeon Forge in is definitely
the rowdiest. Good time theSmoky Mountain. lumberjack view

get your plan on and head onover to the Great Smoky Mountain

(39:21):
The thought behind this topicyou guys was there are so many
films where people are going offon vacation or going off to camp
or something and then somethinghorrible happens. And it's
always been my worst fearwhenever I was going on vacation
if I was going to Disneyland orsomething I was like, I sure
hope something bad doesn'thappen on this. anxiety. This is
(39:49):
how my mind works. Oh,that is something I have never
experienced.
Well, I bet you put your head onyour pillow and you fall right
asleep at night. That must benice.
Wow. On my stomach and I boughtlike a lizard on a hot rod.
bad for your back.
I know.
With that in mind you guys, Iuse this topic to finally hunt
(40:11):
down a movie I've been dying tosee for years. And it is called
who can kill a child?
Sorry, I just kept this mentalimage for later.
If I could I do it. They're warmsunbaked rock
anyway, so kill a child. Whatmovie do you have?
(40:32):
I chose from 1976 who can kill achild.
(42:07):
Lovely, lovely title.
Ha could find no budget or boxoffice information. And no
Rotten Tomatoes critics but theaudience hasn't it's 79% 76
horror film that you've neverheard of? Oh, no,
I've seen it. Oh, you've seenit. And oh, okay. If it's one I
think it is described andit was written and directed by
Nazi So even as Sarah door whowrote and directed the house
(42:31):
that screamed and about 70 othercredits, not including the 25
credits he has as an actor. Wow.
And he just passed in 2019. Andit is also based on the novel by
Juan Jose plots. Stars Louisfiandre, who's in Dr. fives
raises again, Dr. Jekyll and Mr.
Hyde and 67 other credits, andPrunella ransom, who has 32
(42:55):
credits, mostly Britishtelevision, and she passed away
in 2002 in a very young age. Soyou've seen this, Eric, you've
not seen this with us. But Ithink this kind of year kind of
movie. Really? Yeah. It startswith a montage of like
documentary footage that showsthe effects of war on children.
(43:16):
And it's all real footage oflike kids in World War Two that
had been taken out of the campsand stuff like this, and it is
some harrowing shit. And then itit's almost like, like Mondo
Cane footage and shit like that.
(43:37):
And you know what it started? Iwas like, What did I get the
wrong movies, because I had topay to hunt this down. And I was
only able to find it under itsItalian title. Hmm. And then I
was worried because it startswith Well, the Mondo came
footage has English and then itstarts with Italian language and
(43:57):
then English subtitles. But thenwe find ourselves with Tom and
Evelyn who are the protagonistsof this film. And they are
English and they speak inEnglish and I and then once that
goes away, or once the theItalian stuff goes away. The
(44:18):
subtitles go away too. So everytime you hear somebody speaking
something other than English, itis no subtitles. You are put in
the position of the two mainactors who can't understand
what's going on.
It's an intentional choice, I'msure. Awesome. Yes, because this
is a fucking creepy movie. Thesetwo are taking a vacation before
(44:39):
the birth of their third child.
And after a night of partying onthis really cool vacation
Island. I can't tell exactlywhere they're supposed to be.
But there's fireworks at nightand they're wandering around
through a parade and all thisstuff. And you know, and they're
canoodling and kissing, you'relike oh, this is nice. These
people love each other and theydecide that The next day,
(45:00):
they're going to take a littleboat that they got and go off to
this little deserted island, they'd heard of not a desert,
not just not a deserted island, but a little like local village
place. It's not a touristy typething. So they get there, and
(45:22):
they pull the boat up to thedock. And there are a couple of
kids kind of sitting there onthe dock who look very sullen
and angry. They don't sayanything. And they wander into
town. And there is this cutelittle village there. But it
seems to be deserted. Every oncein a while they see a kid like
looking out a window at them orsomething like that. But
(45:43):
otherwise, they can't getanybody to come. Like when they
ring a bell for a hotel, theycan't get anyone to come for
that they make a trip down tothe main part of the downtown
area, and they go into arestaurant and nobody's there.
So it's very, very odd. Finally,he goes off and leaves his wife
in the restaurant. He's kind oflooking around just to see if
(46:04):
there's anybody there and thislittle girl walks into the
restaurant. And she seemsfascinated because Evelyn has,
you know, a very slight babybump. And the girl has latched
on to this. And she's like, oh,and she's touching her stomach
and everything like that. Andshe smiles and then she goes and
runs off. They follow her andthey find her and have a group
(46:26):
of kids beating to death and oldman that they strung up like a
pin Jada?
Oh my god. Yeah.
And I suddenly know exactly whyyou like this.
And when they see that, andthey're, they're horrified. And
there's just too many kids thatthey could like go and kick one
or something. So they go runningoff. But now of course the
(46:48):
bodies started appearing inevery place they look, they find
a dead body. So they're tryingto escape, but the kids are kind
of hurting them towards thisarea. And they they end up
barricading themselves in thishotel room, while the kids are
outside pounding on the door andpounding on the windows and all
this stuff. And it gets reallyweird in that. There's one boy
(47:12):
who's kind of crawling throughthe window of their hotel room,
and he's got a gun. Yeah. ButTom also has a gun, and he
shoots again. Wow. Which is,like amazing. When that
happened. I was like, holy shit.
Yeah, I get and Tom can kill achild.
And they, they kind of breakdown because they're both just,
(47:33):
like, horrified at what he'sdone. But they they realize, Oh,
this is a matter of life anddeath. But don't worry, things
are about to get much, muchworse. Because they are they're
trapped in this room. Right? AndEvelyn starts having these pains
from inside. Because her babyhas also gotten the urge to
(47:59):
kill. And it is Whoa, destroyingher from the inside.
Oh my god. Yes. Whoa.
And you kind of realize, oh,something is going on. That girl
was able to infect the other kidby touching her stomach. And
it's just a weird, creepyfucking movie. So he's down left
(48:21):
in this room with his dead wife.
And the kids pounding on thedoor and everything. He's got
this gun and it's a it's a bigrifle, like a machine gun type
of thing, you know? And he'sjust like, Alright, fuck it
kicks down the door, runsthrough gets outside. But
there's just all these kidswaiting for him. He just moves
him down with a machine gun.
(48:43):
Sure. And then he jumps in ajeep and starts taking off all
these kids are running afterhim. He's running over kids and
shit. I was just like, oh mygod, this is insane. He finally
makes it to the dock. And I'llI'll leave that for you guys to
figure out there's a nice twistending coming up. And it's
(49:06):
probably not anything that youwouldn't see coming now. But I
imagine in 1976 was a littleshocking. And I just had just
had a blast with this movie. I'mso glad I was able to find it. I
know I was reaching out to youand to see if you had it. And
it sounds like one I shouldhave. But yes, I have seen that
one. That's the one I wasthinking of. I just heard it was
(49:26):
a long time ago. So I've kind offorgotten the subtitle thing and
stuff. Right? Yeah, that'sdefinitely got interesting.
Yeah, well, so remember all thatfootage at the beginning. It's
kind of implied that the longlist of atrocities and horrors
that have been brought uponchildren because of wars that
adults have done and all thatstuff. That's cause these kids
(49:49):
to finally, like evolve intosomething that can take matters
into their own hands. Becauseit's the ending is one of those.
Now get out. Go forth. There arelots of other children who like
to play and stuff like that, youknow, a little bit of trivia on
this, the director originallywanted to Anthony Hopkins to
(50:09):
play the part of Tom, this wasin 1976. So that would have been
a pretty young Anthony Hopkins.
And I think that that would haveworked just fine with me. The
script was written in four days.
Wow. Now, even taking intoaccount that he had a book to go
off of four days is a lot.
(50:30):
Yeah.
Wow. And the book that is basedon is El Hijo de los ninos the
child's game, written by JuanJose plans. differences with the
novel include that in the book, children become murderers after
touching a strange yellowpollen. That there's no
explanation given for why thishappens. But that is not why.
(50:55):
And then Juan Jose plans himselfwrote and directed a radio
adaptation of his novel releasedin six episodes in 1999. There's
also a Mexican film called Ithink los ninos that is credited
to him as story idea. So basedon his book, I'm guessing. So
love this movie, and so glad Igot to see it. Finally,
(51:17):
wow, it's you know, it feelslike it's a rarity. Or it's, I
mean, it's still so taboo tojust straight up, destroy a
child on screen who can kill achild? Exactly. It's right there
in the title.
Let me show you.
That concept of literally justgoing through them like there's
(51:38):
no tomorrow is, especially inthat era is pretty surprising to
me.
I thought so too. I rememberright about this time was the
driving movie the children ofthe black fingernails and burn
everybody they touch and Ialways loved that one, too.
There was just something aboutsomething in the air. Parents
hated their kids alittle more honest and how you
(51:59):
feel like they don't want to youdon't want to grab the fact that
you think your kids are ragingpsychotic pain in the ass.
What message were you trying togive when you had the kids
burning you when they huggedyou? No message. I actually feel
like that burning me.
Got the fourth on the way. So Ihave to grab my glasses. I just
(52:21):
realized I can't readHold on. Oh, wow. super powerful
glasses let you readin your area
(52:44):
kircher down. Oh my god.
It Take your time.
You know what?
I can see.
It's not one thing. It'sanother. Um, so for my film, and
(53:05):
I made a big old list ofpotential options out there. And
I realized that there was a KurtRussell film that I could check
out knock off my list and gotvery excited about it. wasn't
sure if it was going to be anygood. But yeah, this film is
called breakdown.
(53:25):
This crazy Look at this. Whenthis mailing contest. You can
choose between $90,000 or 90,000doughnuts. leisurely cross
country trip.
And unexpected break down.
(53:46):
Can you believe this?
A helpful passer by folks. Allright. car broke down.
I can give you a ride to fellslittle diner about five miles
down the road. They got apayphone called tow truck. They
just come in and haul Yeah.
It could happen to anyone.
Excuse me. He's supposed to meetmy wife here to start here.
(54:08):
Five, five. doesn't ring a bell.
Now an ordinary man. I'm lookingfor my wife. I don't know how to
tell you this. But I've neverseen before. My wife has an
unbelievable story.
(54:30):
It was this truck. The policeare doubtful in the first truck,
no sign of a struggle. Thelocals are suspicious. Now.
There's over 100,000 people gomissing in this country every
year. All vanished without atrace. But he's not worried
about the ones who think he'scrazy.
My wife doesn't hate me. He'sworried about the ones who know
(54:51):
he's telling the truth. I sawwhat happened.
When do I see my wife?
Just start walkingon the ground.
(55:17):
Kurt Russell.
Right, john?
From 1997 um,have you guys seen this
assignment theater?
I don't think I've seen thisone.
(55:37):
Really? Okay. It's a I mean,it's a very by the numbers 90s
action film.
Sure.
It's got a lot of that kind of,it feels like it's almost like
made for TV, but with a waybigger budget just because it's
so like on the nose and justdramatic. But we'll get there.
(56:00):
Rotten Tomatoes has 81% forcritics and 67% for audience.
The budget for this movie was 36million and it brought in 50.2.
So you know, like a good littlesuccess, not like a blow away
success. But you know, it madeus money and then some. The
director is also the writer,Jonathan Moscow. He's done some
(56:25):
kind of interesting films. It'svery eclectic. So he did fright
show which I have not seen. ABeverly Hills Body Snatchers.
You 5710Yeah. A submarine movie.
Yeah, Terminator three. He wasoriginally meant to direct to
(56:48):
the game and he had cast KyleMcLaughlin and Bridget Fonda in
it, but ended up executiveproducing it instead, set the
Fincher film it is the DavidFincher film. He also had
students crazy, and he co wrotea comic book series called The
Megabus for virgin comics andthen directed surrogates, which
(57:09):
is based on a comic seriesstarring Bruce Willis. So I
don't know what to make of thisdude. Like it I don't I don't
know. Anyway, that's that guy.
Starring you really have threethere's there's a number of
actors in this but really threemain people we care about. Kurt
Russell, who plays our leadleading man, the good husband,
(57:31):
the driver of the car who drivesa little too fast. Jeff Taylor,
you may remember Kurt from suchgreat says it happened at the
World's Fair. Oh and follow meboys. Another Disney movie.
Horse in a gray flannel suit andcomputer wore tennis shoes.
(57:52):
There you go.
He was also a minor leaguebaseball player. He was second
baseman for the Californiaangels. So there you go.
I don't think I know that.
I did not either. His dad waslike a big baseball guy and
there's some documentary thatgoes into that which I'll get to
later there were no I won't Iwill never talk about it again
anyway. Just know that itexists. I think it's on Netflix.
(58:14):
Um The thing I actually knowKurt Russell from I grew up with
him watching bird on a wire andoverboard because my my mom was
obsessed with certain films thatwe had on VHS. I watched those
movies a lot overboard got a lotof play in suncoast it was a fun
(58:36):
film I hasa has a little place in my heart
does not age well into themodern world. Oh way they did
the remake for it. Oh my god.
The remake is real rough.
Actually.
The only thing I left out was ajoke that they'd used on the
first bird on a wire I have veryvague memories of but enjoyed
(58:57):
anyway. His wife is played byKathleen Quinlan. She plays Amy
Taylor. She's been in a numberof things, including American
Graffiti. I never promised you arose garden, which she was
nominated for Best ActressGolden Globe. Apollo 13 opposite
Tom Hanks, and the REMAX remakeof Hills Have Eyes. It was also
(59:20):
an independence day, but notthat one. Like 1988 film called
Independence Day, I was like,Oh, right. That's interesting.
And more recently, she has beenin a couple of episodes of
Marvel's runaways. That beingsaid, I could not pick her out
of a line to save my life. Icould not put money and be like
(59:42):
that woman is that woman. She'sjust super super generic to me.
And yeah, you don't necessarilysee a ton of her face in this
film. However, somebody you dosee a lot of in this film is JT
Walsh, who plays Warren red bar.
He He's incredible. You mightremember him from Good Morning
(01:00:02):
Vietnam. He was in an episode ofX Files and called the list as
an evil warden. It's been anoutbreak, A Few Good Men. He was
an uncredited state trooper andmisery. I thought was
interesting. And slingblade he'sactually passed away. He died in
1998. This was the last film hewas alive for. Wow, two, or
(01:00:26):
sorry. 1998 to actually see inthe theater, three films of his
came out post-human asleep. Hewas a heavy smoker and died of a
heart attack. But he was 54.
Wow. Yeah. Yup. This film is,um, it is like a heart attack.
(01:00:50):
On on plastic. I mean, it's it'slike, Huh,
just gonna say a heart attack onwheels.
I Yeah, I know, it was trying toget like it. I guess I didn't
watch it on DVD, a heart attackin a streaming format. I don't
know. It was extremelystressful. The plot is a husband
and wife are on a cross countrydrive from Massachusetts to LA
(01:01:13):
for a job. They're a marriedcouple. They talk a lot about
how they have no money.
Basically, they're driving thisreally nice car, but they kind
of gave up everything for thismove. And so they're not really
wealthy. Even though the car isreally nice, quote, unquote,
it's a Jeep Cherokee, the car isheavily featured. I would not be
(01:01:36):
surprised if Jeep didn't throwsome cash at this. Seriously,
this Jeep is like a hero. It isdefinitely like the fourth star
of this film. So they, althoughI will say this is weird, they
experienced car trouble. Soconsidering this Jeep does so
well. It's interesting that theystarted off in this direction,
(01:01:58):
has some car trouble aftergetting gas, and then they're
kind of harassed by this weirdblack pickup truck. They're out
in the middle of the desert, outin New Mexico just driving along
so they're really really nowherenear like a big town or
anything. So it's really creepythat there's this odd big black
pickup truck that just keepsharassing them. However, they're
(01:02:20):
sort of saved there on the sideof the road and this pickup
truck is at the top of the hilllooking like it's going to run
them down. They're saved when abig semi truck comes up behind
them and guy hops out and offersto help them out. They the guy
who is red bar is his name. Heoffers to give a me and and
(01:02:41):
also, whoever Kurt Russell'scharacters actually called on
the phone. Who cares JeffTaylor. Kurt, Kurt arrived to a
nearby cafe it's about fivemiles down the road. Or diner I
should say Kurt's like no, no,he's very prideful, very like
man's man. He's like, No, I'm, Ican figure out this card's fine.
(01:03:04):
And Amy's like, I'm just gonnago ahead and go because this is
stupid, and you're stupid. Andthis guy is like, extremely
nice. And he is extremely nice.
He's like super charismatic, really personable, like a very
next door neighbor. Kind of dothat you wouldn't mind like
(01:03:25):
borrowing sugar from you justcool guy. Um, so she hops in
this truck and goes down theroad and time passes, and Kurt
starts to look under the car andrealizes that some wires were
just pulled out. He's like, Huh,that's weird. puts them back in
car immediately starts so drivesoff to the diner to try and, you
(01:03:45):
know, catch up with his wife.
And lo and behold, she's not there. Dun Dun,
dun dun dun. No one is claimingto have seen her. But it's hard
to tell because like, it's it'sdefinitely trying to give you
that creepy backwater town kindof feel where it's like, these
people might be like, full ofcrap or like evil in some way or
(01:04:08):
just assholes. And you're notreally sure which it is. He's
trying to figure out whathappened to her. And he ends up
getting back on the road andseeing the semi truck. So he
just drives super, super pedalto the metal catches up with the
truck, runs it off the road. Andhe's like, Where is my wife? And
(01:04:28):
the guy is like, I've never seenyou before, sir. I don't know
what you're talking about. Andplays just beautifully. This
horrible gaslighting scene of Idon't know, to the point where I
was like is Is it the same guy?
Like he's pretty much I thinkhe's just not wearing a hat or
wearing a different hat. Andthat's it. It's the same truck.
(01:04:48):
Same guy, same everything, buthe's just so convincingly like,
dude, I'm sorry, I've never seenyou before. I don't know what
you're talking about. Are youare you sure I mean, I'll help
you if I can, but I don't know.
And then a cop pulls over. AndKurt is looking more and more
crazy. Like, he's got my wife inhis truck and the guy's like,
Look, man, you can search mytruck, please go feel free. And
(01:05:11):
he's so open that you're likewhat is happening. So of course,
cop ends up letting letting thetruck driver go, Kirk goes back
to the station to try and startan investigation. But of course,
no one's going to even start tolook for this girl until, you
know, 24 hours have passed. Sothus, he begins this kind of
(01:05:33):
insane adventure of trying tofind his wife. And the film
really shifts gears at somepoint, where maybe about a third
of the way in or half of the wayand it goes from this sort of
slow, creepy thriller, to justnon stop insane fucking action.
(01:05:58):
And it's around the time thatKurt Russell starts to be
pursued by that black truckagain. And he just like, runs
his jeep off of a fuckingmountain. Like, he's just you
see the edge of this hill, andhe's just like, Alright, I'm
going, I was like, What are youdoing, and he throws his jeep
into a river like a ragingriver. And like, the Jeep is
(01:06:22):
just like sinking and sinking, you're like, like, what is
happening right now. And it'sjust so much stress and tension
and craziness. And I'm not goingto say that it's bad. But there,
there's a thing that happens inmodern action films now where
you get a comedic release, andmoments to breathe. You are not
(01:06:44):
going to get this in this movie.
It is just so enhance, um, but Idefinitely recommend it. I will
say you don't see a lot of Amy.
It's very much the current show.
Which which I love. He'sextremely good in it. The guy
who plays the truck driver isextremely good. It really is
(01:07:07):
like the definitive 90s actionnonsense film. The action
scenes. They go for it. Theydon't hold back, like you think
like they're not gonna Oh myGod. They did. There's no way
they're Oh, my God. They did.
Oh, okay. Cool. And that thereis a final standoff. I'm not
(01:07:30):
going to say what happens but itis worth the admission ticket
rental price. Which by the way,it's like free on Amazon right
now. So that's nothing. Thingsthat I'm not thrilled worth
nothing. But it's good, though.
But I mean, if I had to spendlike, you know, 999 on it, I
would. I don't know if it's been$12. Depends how much I needed a
(01:07:50):
foam.
We should probably spend maybe20 minutes discussing whether
you spend 12the things I don't like about
this film, the wife is barely init. So it's not really a thin
film by any means.
(01:08:12):
It's a sausage sausage fest realreal sausage fast. Fun fast
cars, though, so that's good.
Like I said, there's no there'sno breathers. That's a little
rough. So the breakneck pacefrom like the Slow Star is a
little strange. Kurt Russell'sblue blue eyes are incredibly
distracting. To the point whereI was like, they gotta like,
(01:08:35):
power this down a little blueeyes, man. I
don't know if I can take it justa little too dreamy. She really
was a little too dreamy. I haveto say.
That 90s glam up kind of thinglike George Clooney and from
dusk till dawn. Jesus.
Not a lot of super crazy triviafor this film. I will say
(01:08:57):
there's a fun moment though, where at one point the bad guy
says you have exactly 49 minutesto do blank. Jeff, you better
get get your show on the road.
It is actually 49 minutes untilthe end of the movie. Which is
kind of neat. Wow. And thewriter and director Jonathan
Moscow got the idea for the filmwhen driving through Las Vegas
(01:09:18):
with his wife. Like, what? Whatwhat?
Somebody would steal my wifesure wish some kind of
underground network of likesmall town debauchery would
steal my wife from mywife's like, so what would you
do if I got kidnapped right nowfrom this diner?
(01:09:41):
Yeah, exactly. Like so. Honey, what do you think about let's
say some guy like just takewhisks you off and you're like,
stuck in like a bag orsomething. Well, what would that
be like for you? It's just outof curiosity. What is up with
this dude? Other peopleconsidered for the lead aside
from Kurt Russell. See there?
into it.
They're yelling at each other.
(01:10:03):
They're arguing for some kind ofrooftop possession. Oh, okay,
that's enough waiting for SNAP,like a knife to come out. Um, so
Kurt Russell. The lead was alsoconsidered, potentially to be
played by Dennis Quaid, BruceWillis and Harris Mel Gibson and
Richard Gere. I think KurtRussell does a great job. But I
(01:10:27):
don't think it's a super deeprole. So I think any number of
people probably could havejumped into it. Um, fun fact,
there's a scene where a littlekid is playing a video game.
That game is doom. However, thesoundtracks and sound effect for
it is not from doom.
There you go, man.
I thought you're gonna say thatand that kid was Jesus Christ.
(01:10:51):
And this film was lightly basedoff of the hitcher, from 1986.
So that's interesting. I thoughtthat I couldn't see that.
When you're talking about it, Igot it. He went to the diner and
my first thought was, Oh, yeah, and he finds a finger in the
pitcher.
Now I want to see the hitter.
(01:11:12):
It's good. It's so good. Man.
Rutger Hauer it is almostnastiest. I mean, he is just
awesome. And it also has a fewmoments you're gone. Did they
really Holy shit. Anyway, sowell, he both had a much better
time watching our movie than Ido. Now. This isn't bad. Don't
buy it.
(01:11:34):
Anyways 2008 plague town men butAmericans, you're in a foreign
land and representing yourcountry. So you need to work
with dignity and respect.
You can see settling down andcountry cottage.
(01:11:56):
The last bus is in about fiveminutes there's nothing here.
Your last year the last Exactly.
You'll be better off with me. Ithink we'll take our chances. I
(01:12:17):
don't know about this.
What's weird French car luggagehalt in the middle of nowhere.
I saw somethingthat someone else
(01:12:41):
but hate to see both ways.
The car and lock the doors down.
(01:13:04):
Get away from here now.
(01:13:39):
We laughing about therotten tomatoes on this and this
was part of one of those in theearly 2000s they had that bit
where there's like eight filmsto die for whatever. 30 Yeah.
Where they did weird. Fakeattempts at film festivals in
(01:14:03):
theaters. This was part of oneof them. I don't remember which
one. But the right tomatoes.
Even though it's part of thatthey're on tomatoes still has no
critic score for it. Wow. Andthe audience score is 19 whoa
budget of about a million no boxoffice is really available
(01:14:25):
buttons as part of that festivalthat did not do well. Well. I'm
sure it was not a bigmoneymaker. The most interesting
part of this was actually I'mwatching this movie. This is a
sever and film release. So I'mwatching this movie gone. Okay,
this is late or late or early2000s. It's not bad, but it's
(01:14:45):
not what you usually expect fromSephora and by any means. What
is going on here so I looked itup and it's directed by David
Gregory. Let me tell you aboutDavid here. He directed the doc
documentary lost souls thedoctor by lynda.com The Adamson
documentary they talked aboutearlier in the year. He was a co
(01:15:05):
producer of color out of space.
Whoa. And the severan, founderand director of many of the
extras in documentaries givinghim 225, Director credits. Wow.
And the writer wrote a moviecalled devolved. He is the other
co founder of suffering. And so,there we go.
(01:15:31):
Well, 19% though, yeah. But so we've got Jocelyn
de crosta, who plays who was ina movie called herpes boys. Then
devall also involved. EricaRhodes, who's in a short film
group theater bizarre andwaiting for Dracula. And David
Lombard who's done some TV. Ifeel like that names very
(01:15:55):
familiar, but I don't knowLombard is. office space
character, I think. Okay.
Anyways, a so this is a story ofan American family visiting
Irish, their Irish roots. Unlikemost of these films, no way
exactly like most of thesefilms, none of the people in the
family are getting along. Sure.
There's the blonde daughterwho's the high maintenance he
(01:16:19):
kind of bitchy, complaining one, there's the dark haired
daughter, she's the sort of GFIdown on her life depressed kind.
And the father who's divorcedwho's trying to get them in good
with his new soon to be wife.
off the bat check. Okay, I'veseen this before. And one of the
(01:16:41):
more interesting actors in themovie is the blonde girl met a
British guy and decided that hewas going to tag along with them
to the events. Amazingly enough,he does not turn out to be the
problem. Right from thebeginning, I'm watching this
gone man. remaster by Severindirected and written by the
(01:17:02):
founders of seven and seven andthe audio is rough. I don't know
how the dubbing sounds are notthe dubbing. But it sounds like
it was looped a lot. A lot of itwas looped, and it wasn't
blended real well into thebackground as it should. So it's
very bizarre. And then at thesame time, the sound design is
(01:17:23):
freaking fantastic. The soundeffects the music everything is
mixed really well. So it's likeboy that that looping must have
been rough. So they take a busto the Irish countryside to see
his something I don't reallyknow. And Surprise, surprise,
they missed the mat last bushome and this bus drivers, Dick,
(01:17:47):
because you've got five peoplerunning down the road yelling at
him, like a foot away from beingable to smack the back of the
bus and he just keeps driving.
It's like,Wow. I said don't be late.
Exactly. So this is how deep Iwas in this movie at times and
watch is gone, man, my parentsnever would have let me swear
(01:18:08):
that much or smoke out of them.
But the end up getting lost, ofcourse and come on. They're
walking down a road trying tofind something. And they go they
see like a light and they'refollowing it. But they come
across the car, which has beenabandoned. But all the doors are
open. So hey, let's hang out inthe car. Okay, sure, why not?
Couple of them go off to look.
(01:18:33):
The British guy in the blonde, Ithink, oh, the dad go looking
for an old cabin. And they findthe old cabin. And the dad is
immediately killed. And I willsay the violence in this film is
really well done.
It's these weird looking kind ofkids again. And they've got what
looks like a piano wire probablyor something because that's what
(01:18:54):
it always is. And they wrap itaround the guy's head and it
goes right between his eyes andsevers the top of his head. I
was like, Wow. So that it doeshave that going for it. They
film his violin good. And itgets a little weirder after
that. Even if you've seen theposter for this. It's a woman
(01:19:17):
with a like a wrap around hereyes and there's like doll eyes
on the outside of the wrap.
I recognize that. Yeah.
And so this is a group of inbredpeople. And they're basically
trying to find people I don'tknow if I'm giving this away if
(01:19:37):
it happens at the end or themetal. But they, they kidnap
women and try to impregnate themto keep their line, purifying
their line back to where it's nolonger a bunch of mutations
which, you know, that's nevergoing to work.
The more you tell the story, theless the title of this movie.
(01:19:59):
Makes sense. Oh, itdoesn't make sense. Okay, I
don't,I don't know. I'm like, Okay.
When do we get to like town?
There's no town. There's twobuildings. And I don't know what
the plague is, unless the unlessI missed something where they
explained that these geneticdisorders actually came from a
(01:20:20):
play, there might have been likea witch, the cast movie didn't
really grab me90% Kelly, What again?
So the lady finds the Britishguy has been injured, and she's
trying to trying to help him getback to health. And I watched a
little bit of a duck, there'ssome good documentaries on
there, obviously. And I watchedsome of the doc about the film.
(01:20:43):
And this lady's while she'stalking to him, has a whole
bunch of these little whitethings sitting on the on the
table, but they're perfectlysquare. Like, what is the point
of these and they're never shownother than like, some blood gets
splattered on them. They weremeticulously carved
marshmallows. So it was like, three lines of marshmallows on
(01:21:06):
this table, all carved intosquares. And even the director
times gone. I don't reallyremember why I was so insistent
on that, but we had to have thesquare Marshal. Oh my god, okay.
Please fear, you know, misssomething there. The lady that's
helping him is the one who's gotthe daughter with the weird mask
eyes. And she comes out andmesses with him. Like, okay,
(01:21:31):
this is weird. And they're thewhen the British guy gets taken
out, it's another incrediblycruel and violent shit. So if
you're interested in watchingthis, I'll leave that one for
you to discover on your own. Andwatching the information on the
movie, apparently, the originalidea was this 10 or 15 minutes
segment that ends with that.
David wrote this with the ideaof this guy being all those
(01:21:54):
British annoying assholes he'dever met and hated so much and
wished he could do something toso he ends ends up torturing him
the most and probably hurtinghim the most and then killing
him in the most violent way. AndGod, so he had that. He's like,
Yeah, that's great to get out.
And then they have the the otherwriters talk about how they then
(01:22:17):
reverse engineer the rest of thestory back to the beginning. But
that segment he's talking aboutis the best part of the movie,
that that series of stuff wherethings happened to him, he's in
the house and the marshmallows, and that's really solid, the
move up to it, I think theycould have reverse engineered a
little tighter, and they kind ofend is also sort of, okay. But
(01:22:40):
that segment in the middleactually is really, really
strong. Really well shot and theeffects still aren't just damn
good. So that'll that didn'tmake it worth watching. That
series is so well done. And theBritish guy is incredibly
charismatic, and a lot of fun towatch. Although supposed to be
(01:23:00):
based in Ireland, it was shot inConnecticut. And when they're
doing the auditions, this guywalked in and he was actually
British. So the director like,Okay, if this guy can act, he
looks great. He sounds great.
Let's hope he can act. And Ithink he's the best actor in the
film. Oh, cool. So, you know, they lucked out there for some
weird weird reason. Horror houndweekend was a horror hound
(01:23:20):
weekend film, as well.
Okay, yeah. I do want to go back and
finish documentary becausethat's really interesting. and
watched about half an hour ofit. And it's a like a 90 minute
full feature documentary, whichis what these guys do. Watch,
suffer and documentdocumentaries. They do a good
job. And they've done a lot ofthem that lost souls one is one
(01:23:40):
of the best making moviedocumentaries I've seen. Oh,
yeah. Fantastic.
So that I think it's going toend up being better than the
movie. And going All right. Allright. I'm all right that I got
this. It was also the very firstfilm production for dark sky
films. Who have since gone on todo a whole shitload of stuff.
(01:24:03):
Yeah. Why isn't that like a anoffshoot of Spielberg's stuff or
something like that?
It was an offshoot of sampling, but I don't remember if it was
Spielberg, it was their offshootto start making horror films now
canceling those financed sci fi,I believe, so you know, they
traveled, they mostly gotkilled. And gore hounds will
(01:24:24):
enjoy it because it's got theeffects are great stories. Fine.
You've seen it 400 differenttimes. That middle section, like
I said, is really really strong.
But it's worth watching, butit's definitely not as good as
I've seen both all three ofthese films. This is the weakest
of the three we're talking abouttoday.
Well, I'm sorry that you pooryou chose poorly. Yes.
(01:24:51):
But still fascinating to hear.
Sometimes it's nice to comeacross these bad ones too. And
also be in the weird sevenfanboy. I've
come over the last last coupleyears it's kind of interesting
to look. See what else he hasdone and where, where they came
from and why they're doing whatthey do. Absolutely. So yeah,
that was cool.
Man this episode, I feel likewe've gotten all the noises
(01:25:14):
sirens, yes, seagulls It feelslike there's construction going
on downstairs now. So if this isall coming through that
everybody is as as entertainedwith it as I am every day of my
life. Who's got this next one?
That'd be me. All right, Bert.
It's all about but not just,we're doing kind of a related to
(01:25:35):
this, we're gonna dive into ourFebruary. subjects, we'll
probably start doing likesomething about who knows?
relationships, hearts, blood.
It is the month of love.
That's right. So just to kickthat off, we're going to be
stuck talking about couples andor families uniting together to
(01:25:58):
face down evil. So hopefully, you're not going to have a movie
like the one I just watchedwhile the family hates each
other. Even. Even as aprogresses they don't
particularly learn to get along, they usually get killed off
before they get the chance tocome back and get together. So
you know, hopefully they'll staytogether a little longer and
be together sounds like a soundslike a good challenge to find a
(01:26:21):
film where families actually getalong.
The fog would fit into this onebecause she's racing to save
her. Wait a second. No, sheisn't she hangs out in the
fucking light.
Like an 80 year old woman. Heseems fine. He definitely
doesn't just like open thewindow or whatever.
(01:26:43):
I hear what's going on.
Okay, I like this topic. And Ilike this idea of making
February a relationship kind ofmonths. Because everybody's
doing women in horror, right? Wedon't need to do that shit
anymore. Do we? owe forFebruary?
I did see where they're lookingto move it to a different month.
(01:27:06):
Really? Yeah.
I wouldn't hate that becausethere is a Black History Month
is the same month and HorrorMonth. So they're saying maybe
we should get our own month. Iwas like, okay,
we would actually make a newmonth. Ladies.
Amen. Watch out. We control themoon, we can do all kinds of
things.
(01:27:27):
All right. Okay, so that's theepisode. As always, thanks to
everyone who's liking andsharing and everything. Hey,
just as an aside, I deactivatedmy facebook account. And I have
gotten a couple of people whohave reached out to me, like
Ron, for Becca, Danny willeford.
Just to make sure that I'm okay.
And all that. And I will tellyou that I am okay. And in fact,
I'm more than okay since Ideactivated my facebook account.
(01:27:50):
But I've kept my messenger upnow. So if you need to get ahold
of me, for some reason, you cando it still through that
I recommend dming him pictures.
It's a good way to go.
I'm just gonna take pictures oflike, the most mundane thing to
you. Here's my breakfast today.
(01:28:15):
You know, I'll be fine withthat. As long as you keep your
expertise in politics, orpandemics out of the description
of the photo.
Sure. I can completely do that.
That's, that's why I took myselfout of Facebook.
I just got tired. It's hard.
It's I don't look at it oftenanymore.
(01:28:36):
Yeah, I will be coming backbecause I have a book to promote
here shortly and all of thatstuff. And when I do I will
probably just kind of muteeverybody, you know, just to
keep my sanity. And I'll tellyou guys, I've I've been in a
much better headspace since Igot rid of it. So
nice. You know, it's like alwaysa temptation. And then you think
(01:28:57):
but then I'll miss everybody.
And it's such a hard time rightnow because we're all socially
separated from each other. Andit's nice to hear that it's
possible and it still mightbring great joy and relaxation.
Well, now that you brought thatstuff, I thought I might have
made a massive mistake.
If you want me to look for youand your people, I can tell you,
I guarantee they will not beworth going back to you for
(01:29:20):
right. Okay, so that's the show.
We're coming back in one weekand we're talking about
relationships, couples, families, all that good stuff,
good things that matter. Ourshow is recorded somewhere high
above Naval Station Everett atthe nexus of all realities, and
is engineered and produced byEric Margaret. Our theme music
is Strange Aeons part one by theband and he is usually fine
