Unknown (00:03):
Oh, I'm sorry, did I
break your concentration?
Somewhere between science andsuperstition?
To show youStrange Aeons. Welcome to
(00:28):
Strange Aeons radio where we'recelebrating the one year
anniversary of locking down fortwo weeks. Ooh.
That's Eric market over there.
Hello. That's Vanessa Williamsover there. Hello. I'm Kelly
young. You want to know whatelse is exciting guys? Yeah, I
had a massive plumbing issuelast week, and the plumber came
(00:50):
in, and you will no longer hearthe sink farts. Oh.
Well, while they cleared thewhole thing out, the sink had
had kind of started filling upwith water while the outside was
filling up with snow. And I, Icalled the management and they
(01:14):
were like, oh, and the bestpart. Of course, couldn't get a
plumber here. Because as youknow, we had 17 inches of snow
and nobody could go anywhere.
And it turns out that my kitchensink, which I don't put food in
or anything, it is illegallytapped into the the back of it.
The neighbor's bathroom sink isthere. And I was like, Well, why
(01:36):
would they be putting food downor anything? No, he pulls out a
frightening amount of black longblack hair. Oh,
yeah. So that's so messed up. Imean, is it still hooked up? Or
is this a future issue that maycome again? Well, I mean,
(01:58):
remember, the building was builton 1950. So and then it was it
was a Chinese laundromat backthen. And through the years, it
has been all sorts of things, doctor's offices and all that
stuff. And then it was finallyconverted to living space. And
that's why my my layout is sofucking weird. Yeah. And so I
don't know if if these sinkswere put in at some time as like
(02:22):
just doctor's sinks orsomething. And then they decided
when they were going toturn it into living space, they
would just keep connecting itall together and all that, you
know, my I don't have a fuse boxfor my space. Oh, are you
serious? Yeah. And I and my podbill is split. I get a bill that
I pay 60% of my neighbors pay40% of based on square footage.
(02:45):
Oh my god. Never use yourelectricity. Oh, you mean like I
never do? Yeah. Yeah. So crazy.
Not a good word. That's a badsystem. You're right. Yeah.
You're right. I had fun workdone to I know you did. This is
why I brought it up. I wanted tohear all about you. Oh, a while
(03:06):
ago, a while ago, we had a moldstain on our ceiling, which we
kind of had for probably longerthan we should have. But it was
in an area on top of our stairs, which you cannot safely reach
unless you buy a certain kind ofladder and there's just no way
to get to it. And so we finallybrought someone in. Well, the
(03:27):
fun of why we had a mold stainis a design flaw kinda like what
you're just talking about.
You're gonna tell me dead bodyin the attic? Oh, no, I think we
would have smelled that too. Butalthough there were a lot of
wasp bodies out there, apparently, according to the guy
who does like God, there's a lotof wasp up here that know shit.
But, um, so a couple years agowhen they cleaned out the
(03:48):
upstairs because the originalpeople who designed the
building, when they put in thelaundry rooms for each of the
units, they just vented it intothe crawlspace above. Oh, my
God, like the attic area was notbig enough to be called an
attic. Well, your place wasbuilt in 1915. Also 90s Yeah.
(04:12):
And so we had to have somebodycome in and extend all of those
out. And then when he opened upto pull out the mold ceiling, he
pulled us likeyour boards above this are still
wet. Oh mygod. So he had to have an
inspector come out and looked atit. And he said, it's I don't
know why it's in this one space.
(04:34):
There's no holes above you.
There's nothing there. It's justmaybe never dried. Because by
the and then the he left saidyou're fine to continue. So the
drywall guy came back. He'slike, Oh, yeah, it's like 70%
drier than it was when I crackthis thing open. So there's just
some weird capture of moisturegoing on there. So cut a hole in
the fun part of doing drywall ofa large space.
(05:00):
That is cut it put the crap onit, he has to let it dry for a
day sand and put the texture onthat he's got to come back and
next day to paint as I got.
Luckily the guy was really cool.
Started exchanging ideas forshows to watch and I sent him
like the boys and watch waslike, Oh, you have already seen
thoseof you came back. Have you seen
Cobra? Kai? Like, yeah, I shouldprobably be keeping in contact
(05:24):
with this guy for a while. Hedoes really good work. Next
week, we have a special guestsand it's the guy who worked on
that.
There you go telling us hispicks. And a plumber comes
tomorrow. Oh, nice. I've seenenough Asian horror to know that
if you've got a wet spot in yourhouse. Yes. I was gonna say I
was trying to work out what itwas reminding me. Thank you so
(05:47):
kindly shared with us. Yeah, itlooks like the dead body
staining Cairo.
I was like, oh,people disintegrating into the
walls here. No secrets come out.
All right.
Hey, Vanessa, I watched a moviethat you're gonna want to watch
on prime and it's old. And it'salmost three hours long, is
(06:12):
called Day of Resurrection 1973at the time, the most expensive
Japanese movie ever made byToho, but full of American
actors, because they knew thatthey wanted to go for
international release. So it'sgot all these really amazing
Japanese actors from the oldSamurai movies and stuff
(06:32):
alongside a bunch of our famousactors at the time, some of
which you can tell are just kindof there for a paycheck. But
really interesting, it is a it'sdisaster porn of the highest
order. Because it startswith a virus that is taking over
the world. And and everybody isdying on except for these people
(06:53):
who can make it to,to this Antarctic base. I like
where this is going.
So the movie also takes placeover years and years. So the
last stragglers make it to theAntarctic base. And they decide,
you know, they're going to kindof restart humanity. One girl,
(07:16):
every three guys, they have adiscussion about this. Girls,
you may be doubling up.
And and then it goes on, I thinkit jumps like 10 years later,
you can see that the nr basisthriving, lots of children
running around.
But they have figured out thatthere is going to be because
(07:37):
this is all scientists andeverything who were down there,
they see thatthere is going to be a big,
like Extinction Level earthquakeon the East Coast of the United
States, which is not a big dealbecause nobody's there, right?
Except for what is there isunderneath the White House is
(07:58):
thisis a nuclear cooler, plant based
thing that if if a if ashockwave of enough magnitude
happens there, it actually sendsa signal to the satellites in
space that will launch all thenukes. Really well thought out.
So now they're like racingagainst time to get there before
(08:19):
this earthquake. The virus stillis it takes out everything. So
it's still floating around.
They've got an experimentalvaccine. The earthquake happens
and the nukes go off. And that'snot the end of the movie. Oh my
god. So I mean, it's, it'sliterally two hours and 47
minutes longer something I waslike, I need to delve into what
(08:41):
is called Day of Resurrection.
Okay? Damn, it might be underthe title of virus on prime.
Whatever you do, make sure youdon't get the 90 minute version.
Okay, so there's an alternativeversion floating around that
version cuts out all of theJapanese actors and since it's a
(09:02):
Japanese film, most of theactual storyline is happening
with them. So they they releaselike an Americanized version
that I guess it's just shit. Ohmy god, I can't imagine it's
just like missing all the mainpart. Yes. Here's the release
version for all those people whoreally really suffered in World
War Two.
(09:24):
We just can't get past them.
Man, it just hit everything forme with my my 70s love
the disaster porn. There wassome there was some good, really
good performances of peoplehaving to deal with the fact
that oh, this is the end of theworld you know? Not not in the
(09:44):
day after tomorrow kind of ways.
But in real ways that made youthink this is rough. I mean,
that's what I loved about atomictrain. Is it just was like No,
it Yeah, goes off.
Yeah, people die. Families.
ever find each other like, itwas just so? I mean, it was, you
know, made for TV action, but itwas just like, yeah, yeah, no,
(10:07):
he gets hit by a car and he'sdead now, so don't worry about
him. Whatone of the more depressing films
ever watched on first I'mblanking on the name this is a
while ago was an end of theworld kind of thing. And one of
the key things if you'd seen it,you'd remember the guy who works
for I think the electric plant, spends his last night on Earth,
calling all the people thankingthem for their business. Oh my
(10:28):
god. It's just one of the mostdepressing movies I have ever
seen. Oh, my god that rings abell. That's not threads. Is it?
No, no, I haven't seen that one.
I haven't. I'm aware of thatfrom I haven't seen it yet. It
wasn't that it's a lot morearthouse II, and less. It wasn't
(10:48):
necessarily intended to be ascary, like threads. But it was
justwhat realistically what might
happento it. It's just like, Oh,
Jesus. Yes. You know, it's okay.
I don't remember it. Because Iwouldn't recommend we're
watching it right now. Yes, Iwould recommend a book that
looks like a children's bookcalled when the wind blows,
(11:08):
which is about a British couplehunkering down during nuclear
explosion and then dying. Don'tthey do an animated
animated version? Yeah. It'sbeautiful. Talk. I'm writing
that down right now. I yeah.
That's impressive. One. I wasgifted a copy of it for
Christmas one year because mydad was
(11:30):
we've been talking about it. Andshe was like, Wow, you're really
into this. And I was like, yeah, and she was hunted it down and
was like, here's a copy of thisbook that looks like it's for
children. Merry Christmas.
Oh, my goodness. Well, I alsochecked out a disaster film that
I hadn't I had not yet comeacross, actually bothered to
(11:50):
watch. Um, and I was angry atmyself for not seeing it sooner,
which was the core. Oh, yeah. Iremember this, but I am now
going to be embarrassed that Ihaven't watched it. I haven't
seen it either. But oh my god,but yeah, I cuz I was just, I
think I just thought, Oh, it'sgonna be another really dumb
one. But our standards of what'sdumb and good at this point, has
(12:14):
shifted. And this dumb film isactually very fun. They have to,
like, I mean, everyone knowswhat this is about. But they
have to drill down to Earth'scenter. Because the the stuff
has stopped moving around in it.
And they have to get it to movearound again, the core the
liquid magma, they get ajumpstart, they get a jumpstart.
(12:37):
And one of the people involvedmay or may not be the reason why
it stopped in the first place.
Wait a second. So are you areyou telling me I got to see this
movie? Okay, it's Jules Verne.
It's weird. It's I was notexpecting that it gets very
Journey to the Center of theEarth part when there's like a
lot of like, and now we're inthis parts. No one knew what it
(13:00):
looked like before. And now wedo like it's actually really
pretty fun. When did this comeout? 90s maybe I have seen this
because that sounds reallyfamiliar. Yeah, it's blank. Oh,
even. Yeah, that's right. It'slike kind of an all star cast.
Yeah, it does. It has a hugesleep. Yeah. And it's Eckhart,
Aaron Eckert. Who's the guy.
(13:23):
Okay. Yeah, pretty sure I haveseen that. Yeah, he's very
dreamy. A dreamy scientist.
Definitely as a scientist andnot a movie star.
Was this on your Netflix queue?
Or did you see Amazon q? So Iwatched it for free. Okay, for
sure. On this tonight? Yeah. No,it was so fun. It will. Yeah, I
was really happy to come acrossit again. It's much better than
(13:46):
Deep Impact. I think.
Deep impacts a lot of fun. Yeah,it is. But yeah, like I agree
with Kelly. It's not myfavorite. Oh, yeah.
disaster movies is the core.
Maybe Wow, holy shit. Maybe it'snear the bottom of the
(14:08):
hill up there somewhere. There'sa lot of disaster movie sets.
Well, I saw one completely notlike any of those at all.
Lose the flower of evil. Oh,okay. 2019 have not even heard
of this, directed by Juan DiegoEscobar Allsop de
(14:29):
Okay, that's I meanit's a I think if Kelly watched
he would think it's an A to fourfilm.
It's not but it is the story ofa devout father, who's convinced
that he has found the rebirth ofJesus and has tied him up
(14:50):
outside with his three daughterstrying to live inside and work
around their fathers obviousinsanity.
One of the daughters finds a manand enjoys his company, shall we
say, okay, and the dad is ofcourse furious about this. And
it's because as longtimelisteners of this show, no, I
(15:12):
have no problem with the 84films. I actually enjoy a lot of
them and slow moving movies arekinda like, this is too slow.
There's too. There's acombination of
too many people putting up withtoo much BS. Because these
aren't like five year old girls.
These are full adult women. Andthey're still putting up with
(15:34):
the shift the dad's doing andexcept one sort of trying to
rebel but then she kind ofdoesn't it just really good
performances and gorgeous shot.
Holy crap. I think it was lastweek and week before I was
complaining about day four nightshooting. They nailed it in this
movie. It is gorgeous. ButI mean, if you like religious
(15:56):
Kooks gone crazy kind of movies.
This is probably guilty of a lotmore. But this was just not. It
was good, but it just wasn't.
It's nothing I'll ever watchagain. Is it? Was it American or
no? No, it's just say, Yeah, what's, what's the spelling on
this? Yeah, yeah, so Spanish orMexican. And that might have
(16:17):
something to do with the way thewomen are portrayed. It's a
different culture.
That's true, actually. is verytrue. As somebody who walked
through Italy in the year 2002,it was startling.
Don't walk through even thenicest places alone at night as
(16:39):
a chick, you're, you might notget assaulted. You're gonna get
a lot of stuff said to you.
Well, with that in mind, I sawmovie.
Boy, that's a lot to pick fromthere. So let's see where this
goes. Live. The male feministPaul Ws Anderson called Monster
Hunter. Oh, saying a lot aboutit. Mila Jovovich. I mean, I
(17:03):
know the game exists. So it Ittook me till the end credits to
realize this was based on agame. Yeah. But it I should have
dawned on me as I was watchingthis stupid fucking movie.
Because it progresses like avideo game. This is a really,
really bad movie with an amazingthird act that makes you feel
(17:25):
like oh, this was worth it. Itwas so much fun at the end,
because in the third act, RonPerlman suddenly shows up Oh,
yeah. And it just kind of liketakes over the movie. And you're
like, Oh, fuck, elevateseverything. Yeah. So the
monsters are cool. But it is notwhat I was hoping based on the
trailer, which was a bunch ofArmy soldiers going to a world
(17:49):
and fighting monsters.
It's basically just her going tothis world. Way more like the
video game Resident Evil part, whatever. Right. So you know,
and so I guess if you're a fanof this game, you might enjoy
it. I wanted something a littlebit more. And then I got it in
the third hour. That's cool. SoBut should we just like, watch
(18:11):
it and just watch the last 20minutes? Or do you need the rest
of the film to lead up and makeit really worth it? You know,
Paul, Ws Anderson, there's Yeah, there's a lot of layers. Yeah.
Okay.
Some heavy duty filmmaking goingon.
Well, I finally got around towatching
(18:33):
Cobra Kai, and past one season,so I'm like, starting the second
season now. Yeah, man, that is afun show is so good. I didn't I
didn't expect that. I mean, Ishould have I didn't really know
anything at all about it.
Other than like, one of the guysfrom paper Tigers is in season
three. Yes. The main body isfrom was it karate kid? Three, I
(18:57):
think.
Right when he goes yeah, yeah.
So yeah, he's one of theproducers. I didn't even know he
was an actor. And I've been likehanging out with this dude and
was like, Oh my God. What? Wait, you're what isn't better off
dead? Doesn't have like arestaurant here. So yes, yeah,
I've eaten it as restaurantsvery nice. Like a Hawaiian place
that I cannot remember the nameof right now but
(19:20):
Kona kitchen. Yeah, yeah, he's asweetheart. Yeah, he's such a
nice dude. And his wife isamazing. His whole family's
great. But um, that aside, I waslike, Okay, I'm gonna go ahead
and watch this Cobra Kai thing.
I didn't realize it's like fromthe perspective and
living through it from the badguys perspective from karate
(19:42):
short of I was afraid is gonnabe too much of that kind of like
I not a big fan of wicked is Igot Oh, did she just whatever.
And so I wasn't too sure I wasgonna like Cobra Kai but I think
they do a really good job ofbalancing. Oh, they do. I love
the Johnny is so great. All of aportion
We originally set, but fleshinghim out at all just makes him
(20:03):
feel so much deeper. But I thinkthey're all I think it's just,
it's one of my favorite TVshows, like, period. It's Yeah,
it's been really good. And Ilike that it's not it knows what
it is. Yeah. And that's beenreally nice because I was just
like, thinking it was going tobe more straight karate kid and
I was like, I don't know. No,no, I need that in my life. And
(20:25):
instead is like, very funny.
It's very poignant. There's alot of like, really interesting
exchanges and changes and, andlike the actual guy who played
the karate kid who's in it islike a kind of a douche. And I
love that. I was like, yeah, youbecame like, whatever that kid
would have grown up to be like africkin car salesman. Dude. Are
(20:45):
you familiar with all of theKarate Kid movies? I am not. I
only know of you do need towatch two and three to get the
benefit of everything that'shappening. Yeah. Especially
especially with the thirdseason.
I mean, threes twos fine threes.
Push.
(21:08):
I love the three men with theone as well. I actually liked
that movie. I just wish theyhadn't called it the karate.
Yeah, it's it takes place inChina. And he's being taught
Kung Fu. And he's like, what?
Eight years old?
I think he's 12 or somethinglike that. Keep in mind.
What's his name? Mike. Can youthink of who plays well, he was
(21:29):
in high school in high school, but he was a 27 year old.
Oh, yeah. I guess that's tabularasa. Yeah. So whoever that
actor is, yeah, like anything ofhis name. Yeah, I think that the
the second one is, I think thesecond one's a little more
melodramatic than it has to be athird one is ridiculous fun
(21:51):
because the bad guy is, is soevil, that I wish I loved
anything as much as he lovesbeing evil. He literally laughs
while he's doing evil thingsinstead of just like, oh, man,
this guy needs a mustachealso watched a little bit of the
making of and the guys who putit together obviously from a
final product, love The KarateKid. And there's a lot of talks
(22:14):
about having a real hard timegetting the guy played Johnny
because he for a little bituntil he read it. He's like, Oh,
crap. And then but the samething with the the guy whose
name we can't remember playloose. So he didn't want to come
back because he didn't want tobe quite the way you're watching
because I don't watch him as adouche. I watch him as a fairly
successful guy. He's not beinghe's not. He's great with his
(22:37):
kids and his wife. But he has acar salesman.
He He's like a goody two shoesin an irritating way. Sure. And
they acknowledge that. Yeah. AndI'm like, Yes. Like, I like his
character too. But I'm alsolike, Alright, well, I also
think that Johnny has fallen alot further. So you're rooting a
(23:00):
lot harder for him? Yes.
And yeah, they weren't gonna doit if they couldn't get anybody.
Everybody on board. Really?
Yeah. They're basically greenlitto do it. But they're like, only
if we pull it off. And hey, yeah.
And you know, I haven't seen therest of it, but they couldn't
get the girl because they keeptalking about the girl watching.
(23:24):
Just like they just that momentwhere they're in the bar and
like, they pulls out a pictureof her. It's like, What's she up
to look her up on Facebook? Oh,she's married to that guy. super
handsome man. Huh? as like, thisfeels a lot like a couldn't get
this actress moment. But maybeI'm wrong. People actually.
Like, don't worry, we didn'tforget her. What would have been
(23:47):
greatest if they said What's shedoing now? Holy shit. She's
starring in the boys.
Well, I did watch the martialarts film. Not along those
lines.
I'm continuing with my alAdamson box set of 32 movies.
(24:08):
And came up to 1977 blackSamurai starring
Jim Kelly. I did not realizethat this movie was by that guy
and that you have it. I've beensearching for this movie
forever. Oh, well, it's not onprimetime. You definitely learn
that day. Thank you. It'sgarbage. But it's awesome
(24:28):
garbage. Holy shit. It is sobad. He is Jim Kelly plays an
agent of Dragon defense reserveagency guardian of nations. Yes.
But you know that right theretells you what kind of
enlisted they wasted the O onof.
(24:48):
But Jim Kelly gets a nice amountof fights, even fights with a
bird at one point.
And there it's this almostbecame one
Our next subject of cult films,I was looking at this one for
cult films because it's got atenant cult involved with it
too. Hey, how do you how do youknow what the next selection?
(25:09):
And how shocking? I don't knowhow you would be aware? I
haven't to reveal, right? yes toyou guys what you will research?
Yes, sir. Our well knownsecrets.
We have so many. But yeah, it'sdefinitely worth watching and
like I was telling you earlierwhen I said and the gear up that
(25:30):
the Adamson set is sort of I'vebeen watching it chronologically
as he made them. And it's sortof a diminishing return, shall
we say? This blood of his beststuff was in the 60s and early
70s. And now it's starting tofade. This is still one of the
fun ones. And this was 7070s.
Yeah. So four years after enterthe Drake. And yeah, what Jim
(25:50):
Kelly was doing and all thoseyears was a just a bunch of kung
fu movies. There are quite afew.
You don't have to look that up.
Yeah. But yeah, that's fun.
Well, cool. We should take alittle break. But just before we
do that, I just want to say,Eric, you had a recommendation
of bloody hell. Oh, yeah. And Iwatched it and it's firmly in my
(26:13):
top five of this year so far. Ihad so much fun with that movie.
That movie is ridiculous. Oh,yeah. And you didn't sell the
comedy level as much as inthere. The fact that he talks to
himself and his other self issuch a prick. Yes. is so funny.
(26:34):
So I really, yeah, I really, really loved that. So thank you
very much for that. Very cool.
Excellent.
To watch it. Yeah. I'll have tocheck this out. That sounds
great. It's, it's ridiculous. Ijust was
as funny as it was. I didn'texpect it to also be as good as
it was. The acting was great.
And everything made sense.
(26:59):
Yeah. Anyway, that's all I gottasay. Let's take a break. We were
coming back with a toxicrelationship.
(27:19):
mystery is me.
mystery ishome is full of lots of things
that children shouldn't touch.
Home is full of bad things thatcan hurt you very much. Now
there is a man whose face isgreen that you want to get to
(27:42):
know. wonder when dangerouscoming fast or slow. Get to know
his face. In every single place.
When you see it, you know quickthings might make you sick.
(28:02):
Same, same. mystery is me.
mystery is query.
We have returned Eric, this wasyour genre topic, right? Yes,
(28:24):
yes, it is. Once you go for sometime about toxic relationships,
maybe a little more than justtheir bad relationship. But when
you're watching where the peoplein the movie may not necessarily
know they're in a bad one. Butwe sure as hell do.
So I went with 2018 beastin captivity.
(29:31):
connected to the unsolvedmurders three other girls over
the past four years.
Just change the rules.
(30:17):
can't laughRotten Tomatoes 92 from the
(31:03):
critics 75 from the audience sowell liked, I don't think I've
heardno idea this movie existed until
like, two or three weeks ago, Iwas going, Oh, this looks good.
And it's actually why I came upwith this subject
budget couldn't find, althoughit did have almost $1.7 million
(31:26):
box office. So it did a prettygood festival style run with
probably extra screeningsafterwards, directed by Michael
Pierce, and written by MichaelPierce. This is his first
feature. It's done a few shortsand he's working on an alien
invasion movie. It's interestingchange of styles, but all right,
it's his real passion project.
That's right. The star of thefilm The main male stars 2020s
(31:49):
Johnny Flynn, who was in 2020s.
Mo I have seen this Okay, we'reseeing bass. Yeah, I know
Johnny. Yeah, he's, like, knowhim know him know. He's pretty
good. He's very good in this.
Play the David Bowie andstardust. And the lady is Jessie
Buckley, she was in thedeeply disturbing Chernobyl
(32:13):
Fargo TV show, and I'm thinkingof ending things. So they're
both fairly active. AndGeraldine James James rounds off
she was in Downton Abbey, RogueOne, and utopia. So he found a
pretty good cast for his firstfeature.
The idea of that movie isthere's a woman who's growing up
(32:36):
in an isolated scene like thatsmall of a town but the isolated
community, her family is notnice, shall we say.
And she finds the very nice andappealing guy to fall in love
with.
But the it opens up at herbirthday. And during her
(32:58):
birthday, her older sisterannounces that she's having
twins. Subsequently, her familycompletely ignores her. So she,
she leaves, she just leaves herbirthday and goes out to a bar
and just starts partying at abar and flirting with a guy. And
the next scene is her on thebeach in the morning with the
guy and it's obviously haven'tlike been home to a bedroom or
(33:20):
anything like that. But hestarts to get a little, shall we
say, hanzi. And along comes ourhero. Johnny, who rescues her
from the guy and takes her homeand has a really nice and
interesting but a littledangerous because he's been
poaching rabbits or something.
Cops, so you get that littlemoment of Ooh, he's a bit of a
(33:40):
bad boy.
And, you know, playing Davidboy, he's not an ugly man.
She comes home to the family herfamily already ate like most of
her birthday cake and mom hascome pletely nasty to her for
not for just disappearing. Soyou know, you get to family
dynamics right away, like yourmom's horrible. I don't like
(34:02):
her.
But she has weird dreams. She'sgot dark dreams of a hooded
person attacking her andstabbing her in the chest and
wakes up to find the slidingglass or glass door downstairs
is open. She hires him to dosome work around the house. And
that's when they start to get alittle bit more flirty. And
her parents, of course, are moreor less approving. During this
(34:25):
time an older teen girl goesmissing.
And the family gets much moreparanoid. And they do and he
champions her he works in thatthere's a dinner scene with
Pascal and mole and he stands upfor her against the family and
you're kind of like, Alright, that's good to see. And they go
(34:46):
out to a I really wanted to hearmore of this music. They go to a
British Country Music Club. Andthere's like 30 or 40 seconds of
what sounds like really strangebad country music.
And whoever was running thesound figured that out because
it's quickly replaced by theschool.
(35:08):
I wanted to hear more of aBritish version of country
music.
It's special. Yeah, but I don'twant to do the research. I don't
want to know that much. Theyfinally consummate their
relationship in the middle ofthe woods.
But the ominous music playedover does does not indicate
(35:28):
that, Oh, well, this is a goodthing going on.
They find the missing teamburied in a potato field, the
police begin to suspect Pascalis being involved in that her
brother is a cop and feasor allthis information about his
history and his criminalcharges. He's run into the past.
(35:50):
She gets angry with him. But hesays something really nice to
her. So she goes running afterhim to come back to him and, you
know, toxic relationship goingon.
And he gets another pet the catkind of moment where he rescues
a guy who's getting beaten up bytwo men at the party. And
of course, he comes back withhis good assault way for why he
(36:11):
assaulted a 15 year old girl orwhatever it is a few years ago
and she buys it.
And they seem to be coming ahappy couple again.
But she starts lying for himwhen the cops start really
asking her questions. She'slike, No, no, he was the guy I
was dancing with all night inthe club. He is getting a little
(36:31):
more violent with her. She runsaway from him at one point from
that but then they come backhere so you're getting the cycle
of the film that's going on.
I'm gonna leave the ending outof it because it's really solid
and really good. And I think isbuilt up and pays off.
incredibly well. This is a goodmovie. It was a really really
(36:56):
well acted film. All thecharacters do a fantastic job.
The two leads are bothmindful enough that as you're
watching they feel at times youreally annoyed with her at times
you're like, oh, maybe he's notthat bad. And other times you
feel really bad for her. Itworks really well. And it's
beautiful. It's really reallywell shot film. This is solid,
(37:20):
solid filmmaking.
Did you like it? Um, I Yeah, Idid. I mean, I felt like the the
pacing was a little slow. And Ithink it's a dark, emotionally
dark. Yes. So it wasn'tsomething I enjoyed. But um,
(37:42):
yeah, I did. I did like it. Ithink that like, just like you
said that the ending is a reallygood payoff. And I think I spent
most of the time just beinglike, Oh, it's Johnny.
Is that? Oh my god, it is? Yeah, that will pull you out of a
film. Really difficult toimmerse myself in the character.
(38:04):
But yeah, I would say I think Ihave a little bit of insight
onto why they went to a badcountry music place may or may
not have picked up I don't know.
So Johnny Flynn. I only knew himas a musician. Oh, cuz he talked
about him before. Yeah, he's afolk singer, guy. And I just
absolutely he's one of myfavorite musicians. To be
(38:28):
honest, I kind of semi stalkedhim.
My, my boyfriend at the time, was actually following him
around doing music videos forhim. So, so this bad country
slash, I think he even did someof the soundtrack for beast. But
I think it's a nod. It's alittle nod towards that world.
(38:49):
So now I'm more curious than tofind out here a little bit more.
Yeah, it's pretty cool.
The film world premiered atwhat's called the platform
platform section of the TorontoInternational Film Festival,
which is therewhere they show films of true
promise of upcoming filmmakers.
I took four days after that forthe movie to be signed for
(39:11):
release. And even though it hadalready premiered it got a
screening at Sundance, whichreally doesn't happen a lot. You
know, they're they're very muchinto the premieres one, the best
debut film by the Britishwriters of the for the 72nd
British Academy of Film Awards, and was also nominated for Best
British film director lived inJersey. And I gotta tell you,
(39:32):
I'm ignorant enough guy in theus that when I first read
jersey, I mean, I just thoughtNew Jersey that about four
minutes I've got hold on NewJersey. This is back in the
Scottish Island or somethinglike that. So he lived there for
a while it was loosely based ona real person that he dubbed the
beast of Jersey, who terrorizedthe islands of dirties jersey in
(39:56):
the 60s and 70s. So, thebeautiful
lead character Johnny is looselybased on a real Wow. And it's
shot in the jersey area. Anotherreason it sounds a little weird
jersey location the White House, but the overall Rotten Tomatoes
consensus i think is prettygood. Bass plays like beat beat
(40:16):
beast plays like bleak poetry, unfurling and psychological
thrills while guided by itscaptivating leads and mesurer.
mesmerizing visual visuals.
But that so so firmly in thethriller camp for this Yeah,
(40:37):
yeah, the title threw me offbecause I thought, Oh, this guy
is gonna be a werewolf or maybehe's kind of thing. But once you
said he was based on a a actualkiller. Yeah, so I'm lucky when
you say he terrorized. I'm likea house. Oh, yeah. You just
(40:57):
annoy everybody.
A lot of eggs that Windows?
Well, I mean, sounds like you'dlove this. Yeah, I really liked
it. It's really good. And wouldyou watch it?
Do I watch it on? streaming? I'mguessing you didn't read it. So
I think it was Amazon might haveto look this up. Yeah, it's well
worth, well worth checking out.
I mean, it's it is alsodeliberately paced, but it's not
(41:21):
annoying. And it's deliberatepacing. All right. And so I
chose a film that I've beenwanting to talk about for a long
time, and there have been anumber of times I thought I was
gonna do it, but then couldn'taccess it, or had one reason or
another. So I almost did thisfor a dream episode. But this is
the 1987 film scared stiff.
(41:50):
Every house has its secrets. Butthis secret has waited 150 years
to get out of old bones. Itturned out to be life.
I don't understand your fixationwith those bones.
And not just about your dreams.
(42:17):
Christopher and Jason haveuncovered something so
inhuman, even if she can findthe power to defy it. Even if
they can find to confront it.
It may be too late.
(42:45):
Just let us go.
See their lives. Shepherd andmine. Still.
(43:07):
Sounds familiar? Maybe it soundsfamiliar because there's a 1945
film called scared stuff.
There's a 1953 film calledscared stuff. There's a 1987 not
this one. But a Hong Kong filmcalled scared stiff. There's a
pinball game, a children's book,a 1991 Horror collection and a
2008 anthology all called scaredstiff.
(43:32):
Sound some is ringing a bell?
Yeah.
Holy wood. Besides thedocumentaries after like the
jail thing, no. straightstraight back guy. I mean, that
would have been its own type oftoxic relationship.
This was a film. I honestlydon't know why I saw it. But
(43:54):
it's, it definitely stuck withme. So um, I thought that it was
a little more well known than itis it has an arrow release. They
did a really good treatment onit. They've got a Blu Ray copy
of it. And it's got some goodbehind the scenes stuff. Rotten
Tomatoes, for example.
(44:14):
Question mark for the critics.
No idea. 40% for audiencebudget. No idea. Wikipedia does
not have a page. Wow. The HongKong version has a like have
that same name. As a page. I waslike, what I did not like
enough. I looked up the directorif I looked up the actors, it
(44:35):
does not matter. This does notexist in a wiki. So she's a
diner and I am I thinking of thesame thing. I'm seeing like a
poster and then the word scaredstiff, dripping blood.
There's like hands going in.
Yeah, around an image. I feel itsounds really. It looks really
bad. Which is probably why I'venever seen it. That's fair. That
(44:57):
is a fair.
Assessment initially, I'mjust gonna get there. Um, so the
director of this film is RichardFriedman, who has a name that
sounds like Oh, you've done alot of stuff. And he's done 34
titles a fair amount, but um,you you might know him from Doom
asylum death mask, a phantom ofthe mall Eric's revenge.
(45:24):
You're welcome.
Thanks, Eric. He did a lot of TVmovies. He's done a little bit
of things like Tales from DarkSide Friday 13th. He did four
episodes of Baywatch nights. Sohe's kind of eclectic. I
wouldn't say beyond his initialfilms. I don't know that he has
a style anymore. Doom asylum isa favorite here. Is it? Okay. I
(45:49):
don't think I've seen Doomasylum. Really bad. Excellent.
Excellent. Well, not surprised.
The writer for this is a namethat you might recognize Mark
frost of twin peaks. Right. Andfantastic for that one of the
bathrooms. A 2005. version,unfortunately. And low bar.
(46:09):
Yeah. And it's weird too.
Because once I figured that outa lot of the font in the credits
and all over the posters issuper, it looks exactly like
Twin Peaks font. So I don'tknow. It's interesting. I was
like, Is this like a mark frosttrademark? I know.
(46:30):
It's weird, like green and redfont thing all about you. He
actually had titled this film.
something a little bitdifferent, a little bit more
helpful. He'd called it ghostdiary, which is way more apt.
Then it was changed to theMasterson curse, which also
(46:50):
works and then changed finallyto scared stuff. Some places do
still call it the Mastersoncurse, not Wikipedia.
I checked.
The special effects in this filmare very, very good. And the
people behind that probablycircle back to but a lot of
(47:12):
this. A lot of the peopleinvolved in this had done very,
very little. Up until thispoint, at least for many people
was the only thing they everworked on, and starred Andrew
Stevens who plays David Young, the psychiatrists guy in a white
coat.
He was in 33 episodes of Dallas, and is now a producer. He's done
(47:39):
132 things as a producer,including boondock Saints
through 1000 miles to Gracelandand the whole nine yards. So
switched gears. Mary PaigeKeller, who's gorgeous she plays
are really our lead heroine,Kate Christopher. She's been in
67 titles. scared stiff was herfourth role is risk, quote,
(48:02):
unquote, to take her on. She'scurrently doing Pretty Little
Liars. She's done her to Dixie,a lot of like one episodes of TV
things, but definitely has a bigTV presence. She did something
called another world which Idon't know about, but she was in
33 episodes of that and do it 54episodes. David Ramsey plays
(48:24):
George Masterson who is like, evil past ghost guy. I think
he has been in three things.
No, you would not have heard ofthe others. Nikola Ford here.
Who plays his wife, Ghost, oldtimey wife person, Elizabeth
(48:45):
Masterson, who's in two things.
And this guy named Jackie Daviswho plays detective Wickham. It
was one of my favorite parts ofthis. And he was actually only
in 12 things and unfortunatelywas in things like Cape Fear is
Jimmy the dock master. He wasin. He was in smoking the bandit
as black man number one.
(49:07):
Rough and Caddyshack as smokecourthouse. porterhouse. I don't
know what that means. Butanyway, so this this film
we open on the year 1857.
Charles Berg, George Mastersonis a horrible human being. He's
selling off slaves as and he'sgood at it, apparently. And it's
(49:31):
really gross and reallyhorrifying. Because it's low
budget 80s fair. So it'swhatever you think it is, is
worse than that.
And then he has his assistantguy runs up to him or his. I
don't know what you call it. Hisperson who tends to him and dude
(49:54):
has like one eye and is alldisfigured and weird looking.
And he's like they're doingthings
Have them in your house. Andhe's like not, not them the help
of the, you know, his slaves aredoing something in my house, and
they are doing something in hishouse something untoward.
They've started a ritual to puta curse on him. And meanwhile,
(50:17):
we also jump over to the IvoryCoast, where a tribe also
problematic as fuckhas created an epitaph of him
and is doing some kind of aritual with this guy. So we know
that it's kind of beinghappening in two places at once.
It's some big bad horrible cursebecause this guy's really really
(50:38):
horrible guy. Meanwhile, thewife Elizabeth Masterson walks
in on the ritual and I was like,Oh, she's gonna like scream and
be like, the people are doingbad things. No, actually kind of
nice. The the guys halts andgive her this really nice mask
and they're like this willprotect you and your son from
from George. And then George.
(51:03):
George walks in and we cut outof that mask up, stay safe.
Absolutely, that is the theme ofthis cut to a singer is moving
in with her psychiatrist turnedboyfriend. She's young, like
mental Institute's psychiatristscurrent boyfriends in the deep
(51:24):
south into a this kind of Gothicmansion, along with her very
young son. The place definitelyis a mess. It's it's basically
been untouched since ourprevious scene with Mr. George.
And as they start to go throughthe house, they discover some
clues as to its dark past.
(51:45):
Her son, meanwhile, is havingstrange premonitions about
moving to this place. He's veryuneasy about it. He's not sure
about her boyfriend. On top ofthat. There's pigeons and
pigeons mean something? I'm notsure what. But there are a lot
of pigeons pigeons from hell.
Before warning with their littlecool.
(52:08):
Like, it doesn't really makesense because I think the
pigeons are meant to signify theEvil Dead, George. But instead
they're just there. And byintroducing them with the start
of like her son in this reallyfun, it looks like an LA like,
mansion or apartment like anupscale apartment, I should say.
And there's pigeons that are soI don't know, I don't know what
(52:30):
the pigeons made but somethingsomething ominous.
She starts to have these dreamsof this guy. And they're finding
things like a diary fromElizabeth, that talks about
their love. And then kind ofslowly talks about how Georgia
is becoming bad. There's amusical piece. And because our
(52:52):
our lead heroine is a singer, she immediately sits down at the
piano and starts to play it,which makes a George appear
before her. She's having dreamswhere he starts to appear more
and more, then he starts toappear in real life, including
taking over David her boyfriendfrom time to time, including in
(53:14):
the shower, and then she justhas sex with him anyway, so
it's very uncomfortable.
So she she wants to leave. She'slike, yo, David, this place be
crazy. We got to get out ofhere. And he's like, yo, Kate.
Oh, honey, I got stuff tied uphere. We can't go anywhere. You
(53:36):
stay put. But he's like, reallyloving and like doctorly most of
the time. And then occasionallyHe's like, You're crazy. And I
thought we were past thesevisions of yours. And yeah, it's
it's verytoxic. You're crazy. Seems like
something a mental Institute guywould not say I know. He doesn't
(53:57):
most of the time. Like when heshould be saying it. He's saying
things that are very kindly andlike, oh, let's just take a
minute. Remember exercises, things like that. And then other
moments. So I think the idea isthat George is taking over him
and making him intodifferential.
(54:18):
Yes. So um, things happen.
There's a repair guy who getsstartled by pigeons does not
turn out well for him. Thelittle kid is playing in the
back of the house with a bunchof like Tonka trucks, that Tonka
trucks and different like, youknow, building equipment, trucks
and stuff out in the sand andthey all become very alive and
(54:38):
move around very quickly. Andit's extremely fun and he enjoys
it a lot. Oh,you, you kind of sell me on
this. Yeah.
Yeah, I will say it's slow. Ithas a slow and problematic first
and second part. So there's alot of it's, it's neat, and it's
interesting. There's momentsthat are really cool.
(55:00):
But there's also a lot of likesitting around and like it's a
bad movie, like bad movie stuff.
Okay, a lot of talking a lot ofweird locations that aren't
fully built out. However, I didenjoy the policeman, who I
mentioned before Jackie Davis, who's just obsessed with
watching basketball on TV. Andevery scene, he's like, either
craning his neck to like, lookat a TV, like, he goes to visit
(55:23):
the psychiatrist. And he sitsthere with the mental patients
watching basketball on TV. Andthen when the mental patients
gets up to change the channel, and he loses his mind as
a psychiatrist is like, a Wereyou here for me? And he's like,
yeah, yeah, sorry. Sorry.
(55:45):
At one point, um, Kate goes tovisit him to talk further about
strange things going on in thehouse. And he's like looking at
something in his filing cabinet.
And when she leaves, it'srevealed that he has like a
little C. cr TV in there. teenytiny, little bunny ears. And
he's like watching the game.
It's just nonstop. We're sowhatnot. habit to give
(56:07):
is such a weird character trait, but I definitely enjoyed that a
lot. It was a good comedic breakin the action. Um, so this whole
film, we're kind of goingbetween flashbacks of Elizabeth
story with George and then Kateand her relationship that is
devolving, I would say withDavid. So they eventually
(56:31):
discover that George had becomeafter this ritual, this sort of
monstrous creature and hadkilled Elizabeth and their son
and shoved him in a trunk, whichdoes not bode well since George
is kind of overtaking David. Inthe flashbacks, he became more
and more monstrous. And he endedup with his like long tendril
hair and a bumpy face, he hadreally exaggerated features. He
(56:54):
became like a creature before hegot to the point where he you
know, shoved his kid in a boxand just walked off.
So Kate is extremely worried.
David is not listening her toher. And at one point, he
basically does not let herleave, he refuses to let her
leave and drugs her he pulls outa big old needle and shoves it
(57:16):
in her arm, which was veryshit starts to get really rough.
David had gifted her son, Jason, this nice Apple two computer,
the computer comes alive andkind of and projects in very
early CGI style, this sort ofholographic image of the mask,
(57:40):
like the mask might be usefulright now, after a couple other
scenes like a dream sequencewhere she's like, they're like
the mask, you should probablyfind it that might help you in
this particular situation ofyours. And she's got half of it,
but can't find hands off like avideo game. prompt. Yeah, it's
it is. I mean, I'm putting wordsas allegory for our time.
(58:07):
It definitely feels like earlycomputer stuff that people who
had no idea what computers wereabout. We're doing Oh, yeah.
Very, very strange. And then shegets fucking crazy. I mean, this
film goes from zero to 1000books so fast, and so well, that
(58:31):
you're like, what is this movie?
All of a sudden the specialeffects go from like, not great
to Holy shit. am i watching likea Friday the 13th movie right
now or like what is going on? Imean, it's weird. They give it
their all. So the kid has thisprotective. He doesn't have like
a blanket or a toy that he needsto sleep. He has a problematic
(58:53):
Native American face lamp thatis bright yellow. And needless
to say at one point, it becomesa giant paper mushy head that
floats down a hallway. Oh, thereare doors that appeared on this
long hallway and everything getsreally misty while of course,
David slash George is chasingKate and her son. And in each
(59:17):
door is some bananas thing, including the mental patience
area that she probably had usedto hang out and be in and that
David works in. And they are alllike, bigger versions of
themselves. And one guy, all Iwill say is head zipper. I want
(59:38):
you to find out what that means.
Beautiful is absolutelyincredible. And nothing like the
Edward Lee header. And anybodywho knows that just move on.
Nothing of this. So basicallythe last 30 minutes of this
film, make it all worth it. It'sa battle.
(01:00:00):
Movie up until then, like it'spretty, pretty rough watch. But
in the last 30 minutes, itbecomes a brilliant film. Wow.
Wow. So I definitely recommendit. I will say Unfortunately,
the acting is a little rough Thesun is particularly bad.
The problematic the worst partsare definitely the problematic
(01:00:21):
African American culture, cultural references, and slave
scenes and the Native Americanlamp are all very good each time
you see it. There's also acouple of like plot points that
are very strange. And there'slike a teen death maybe like the
babysitter might or might nothave died, but there's no lead
up to it. And it's her ghostlike says to her dead corpse
(01:00:44):
says to Kate, well, next timeyou drive me home, and like,
it's like, what did you getkilled by somebody? What did
didn't? David kill you? What'shappening? A little bit of
trivia about this as much as Icould find, which was all on
IMDB, which I hate relying onbut that's okay. It was filmed
(01:01:06):
in a mansion. And primarily, theowner of the mansion requested
that they avoid damaging thisvery old and expensive
chandelier. So they took it downand they put it away for the
whole principle photographylocked it behind this door. When
they went to put it back up.
Only one person had the key bythe way to the door it was
behind. When they got it out ofthe closet. It was smashed to
(01:01:29):
pieces. Oh yeah, it wascompletely destroyed. And they
had to send it out for repairs, which cost them over $25,000
holy shit more than the movie?
Yeah, I'm pretty sure.
I mean, I think the movie wasthe cost of the paper.
And the glue and the whateverelse it took to make all those
(01:01:51):
effects. Mary Paige Keller, whois the star of this, and by far
has the most acting credits washired so close to Principal
photography, that they didn'thave time to get her clothes for
a wardrobe. So she just had touse her own. Which is great
because she's super hip. She'sunbelievably through this whole
thing. The opening scene of theVoodoo cult, as I mentioned
(01:02:15):
before, was shot without a firemarshal in a state park close to
the mansion. It's one of thosefilms, the Voodoo cults chanting
was entirely constructed by thedirector hahahahaha
David Ramsey, the director lovedOh, no, I'm sorry. David Ramsey,
the actor who played Georgeloved his monster makeup a lot.
(01:02:39):
But it did take four hours to doeach and every time. There's a
song but um, so the the leadcharacter Kate is, as I
mentioned, she's a singer. She'slike kind of a pop star. She has
a music video, she keeps goingback to you to keep filming on
and it's this song called beatof the heart. It is unbelievably
catchy. Oh, okay. We'll say thatis a really great part. As of
(01:03:03):
right now I got the beat.
The beat is themusic that she plays part with
on the piano like kind of soundslike it and you're like oh,
connection.
When filming a scene in whichthere's like, like I said, she
gets well, Jason, the little kidhas to jump out of the way of a
moving car. Apparently, thisscene resulted in the car coming
(01:03:26):
within inches of hitting him.
His parents were furious, andinsisted on him being paid a
stunt fee, which he was awarded.
I was like, you're so mad thatyou don't take your kid off the
set and go like on not not safegoing away now. No, no, you go.
That was really, reallydangerous. He should get paid
more. So they did they did infact oblige on that. And you can
(01:03:50):
do that again. As long as youpay more as that sounds like
some savvy parents to me.
Definitely some Hollywoodparents, that's for sure. It's
one of the first films tofeature an apple two computer.
All of the skeletons in thisfilm are real. The pigeons that
were used in the film leftexcrement everywhere while
filming. Um, the end of the filmhas I'm not going to say what
(01:04:11):
happens though. I will saythere's kind of multiple
endings. So it's weird. But itdoes result results in a fall
out of a window by somebody. Andthen the next scene that
somebody is not right out thewindow. There are several feet
away in a fountain. It's veryfunny. It's like Wait, how did
you follow that bar? That isunreal. You went like across the
(01:04:33):
yard. Apparently the filmmakersdid notice this while filming
but they kind of hope no oneelse would.
The music is by the barberbrothers who is really just one
person named Billy Barber, whichI thought was particularly
great. And the best part aboutthis film though, is that the
(01:04:55):
way this film came to be witharrow it was revealed
Basically because of theobsession of one fan is a film
historian named Robert L injure, who saw it. It was on the
shelves of a VHS rental store.
It was one of the last onesstill running in 2004. He was
intrigued picked it out, pickedit up and just fell in love with
it. He started trying to trackdown anything he could have
(01:05:17):
including posters promo items,he managed to get a piece of the
cost when the costumes and hewanted to get a copy of the
master soundtrack. He contactedthe producer Daniel backer, who
had disowned the film at thispoint, and was shocked anyone
would mention it this long afterits release. And together they
(01:05:37):
actually worked and found theoriginal negatives in an MGM
vault in Pittsburgh, as well asa huge like treasure trove of
material for like promo stuff.
backburner. Ben contactedFriedman, the director, and they
secured together a restorationwith arrow video, who gave it a
(01:05:58):
blu ray release and thenbackburner Friedman and Eleanor
all did the commentary track onthe DVD which I thought was
extremely nice. Billy barbercame back and performed a piano
cover of beat of the heart andas the first setting in motion
back there gave Ellen juror somenegatives from the film out of
his own personal collection soit's currently 47% off on Amazon
(01:06:24):
go for me Ray it's it's it's Idon't know I enjoyed it. I
bought it for not full price butnot not full bris. There were
nine and stockpair now eight instocks.
Man this is what happened. tolean demon. I did the exact
thing.
I woke up when you stop talking.
Oh my god.
(01:06:47):
I can't handle your rain.
I made that interesting, sir.
Yeah, I loved it. Can't wait tocheck it out. My movie if anyone
cares is from 1998 and it iscalled bride of Chucky.
(01:08:00):
But this timethere's more to fear
because this timea playmate of his own
bride of ChuckyOh my God, that's exciting.
Budget 25 million. Holy shit.
(01:08:25):
Box Office 51 million worldwideso probably made its money back.
And that's about it.
Rotten Tomatoes critics on thisis only 46% audience agrees with
them. 46% hired, directed byRonnie Hugh, who has done he's
got 16 Chinese film credits, most of them are very highly
(01:08:47):
regarded. And then he also didthis, which gave him the Freddy
vs. Jason film right after this.
And he did a an episode of fearitself. And then he's kind of
dropped off the face of planet Ican't figure out what he's
doing.
Written by Don Manzini. Who haswritten every single one of the
(01:09:09):
child's play movies. Wow. Yeah,of which this is number six, I
believe how do you know how manythere were?
I might, I might at some point.
He also wrote a couple episodesof Hannibal and channel 00 cool.
Oh, wow. It stars. These smokinhot Jennifer Tilly. I love her
(01:09:31):
so much. 27 credits. You mightknow him from a voice
and bullets over Broadway Boundand the muse. Brad Dorf, who is
the voice of Chucky 173 creditsand if you don't know Brad,
you've just not been watchingAmerican cinema. One Flew Over
the Cuckoo's Nest exocyst three,The Lord of the Rings trilogy,
(01:09:55):
which just kind of Americancinema and a million other
movies.
are actually 117 other moviesand Katherine Heigl who you
would know from Roswell and Ibelieve she torpedoed her
career with Grey's Anatomy. Ohyeah, quite fairly. And I did
see now that she is popping upinto a brand new movie called
(01:10:17):
fear of rain another horrorfilm. So yeah, she's got a
pretty terrible reputation.
Yeah, I remember that. I thinkshe started in hallmark movies.
Oh isn't like hallmark moviesand then yeah, she got she
freaked out at Seth Rogen afterknocked up Am I thinking the
right person? I think so. Yeah.
And that was what like herturning on that film like fucked
(01:10:37):
her over. Right. So JenniferTilly plays Tiffany, who is a
former lover and accomplice ofserial killer Charles Lee Ray
who we all know inhabits theChucky doll from all of the
movies. You know what I thinkthis is number four. I've only
ever seen the first one so Ididn't realize is the same guy
just keeps jumping back in andcheck you know, the Chucky doll
(01:10:59):
just continue to survive. Oh,okay, that makes sense. All
right, I'm with you now.
And the first one pretty good.
The second and third one's notso good. Spoiler I loved this
movie and I'm a little surprisethat it's got a 46% I'm with you
on that I really liked bride isso much fun. Yeah. So she
acquires Chucky cheese remainsafter the last movie, where he
(01:11:23):
got like, burned and torn apartor something and she crudely
stitches him back together. Andthen she performs the same
Voodoo ritual that originallygot him stuck in the body and
brings him back in the body. Sohe's like, hey, thanks baby and
all this stuff. She's She's inlove with this guy, Chucky who
(01:11:45):
is still intent on becominghuman again. He lays out a plan
to retrieve the body switchingamulet that he was wearing the
night he was killed. And heknows that the amulet was buried
along with his real body in acemetery in Hackensack, New
Jersey. Oh, not what name isthat comes from? Oh, I think
(01:12:05):
you're thinking of hacky sack.
But I don't know if you'reright, if that's where it came
from or not. Tiffany, however, thinks that she and Ray are just
gonna like, pick up where theyleft off and she presents Chucky
or she shows cecchi this diamondthat he had left for her this
diamond ring. And he startslaughing at her because he
(01:12:27):
realizes that she believes thegift to be an engagement ring.
And he has to explain to herthat he stole it off of one of
his wealthier victims before hekilled her. And so Tiffany in a
rage locks him in this playpentype thing.
And then as a mocking gesture, she gives him a female version
(01:12:50):
of him kind of all dressed up ina wedding gown and says you
know, here you can live withthis. So these guys are
are hilarious to be around.
The love, you can feel the lovehere.
Chucky breaks free and while sheis enjoying a bubble bath with
(01:13:11):
wine and all this stuff in hertrailer.
Get a little black and white TVon the edge of the tub.
He he jumps in, knocks the thingthe TV into the tub and kills
her right. And then to be a realtick. He uses that Voodoo ritual
to put her in the body of thedoll in the wedding dress.
(01:13:33):
Beautiful. Beautiful. So nowhe's he's saying you know, okay,
yeah, I did this shit to you.
But in order for us to both getout of this, we need to go get
that amulet that I'm buriedwith. That is the main thrust of
this movie. Also in this movieis a secondary plotline of these
two young kids Jesse and Jade, who are eloping to this cheapo
(01:13:55):
wedding service. And the dollsget involved in their story in
that they hop a ride in theircar while they're doing this
road trip. And the kids don'tknow it. So all of this horrible
shit starts happening isfollowing these kids. At one
point now Chucky and Tiffany arekind of watching behind the
(01:14:17):
scenes and seeing these kids andChucky you know hates him. His
initial thing is let's killthese kids. But Tiffany has
buried within her kind of aheart of gold and she's really
rooting for these kids to getshe knows that the dad of the
daughter is a sheriff and he'snot happy with this kid is a
little rebellious but a good kidand all this stuff. So all of
(01:14:38):
this stuff is going on and she'slike behind the scenes making
sure nothing bad happens to themby killing people and stuff like
that.
So the kids end up meeting apair of swingers who take them
back and pickpocket their moneywhile they're sitting there
worried about being brokeneverything Tiffany follows the
(01:14:59):
thieves.
their private room as where shetosses a bottle of champagne at
the mirrored ceiling above themwhile they're fucking. And then
all of the shards of mirror comecrashing down on them and kill
them all. Chucky who had beenwatching this is aroused by the
spectacle. And the two of themmake love make doll Love Is
(01:15:21):
this really swanky gross Vegasbloodsoaked room.
So the kids are now all caughtup in this and the cops think
that they're responsible forthis trail of death and
destruction that has beenfollowing them. So they finally
figure out that the dolls arealive in a fairly funny scene.
(01:15:41):
And when that happens, then thethe kids are taken hostage by
the dolls and they're forcingthem to get them to where they
need to go.
One point Jesse is asking Chuckyou know how how did this even
happen? How are you guys even athing and Jackie says
if it were a movie, it wouldtake three or four episodes or
(01:16:04):
three four sequels just toexplain this.
This is the kind of movie it iswhen they get to their actual
place that they've been tryingto get to the cemetery and
everything it turns out theChuckie cheese plan has been to
switch him and Tiffany soulsinto the bodies of the kids. And
Tiffany is she's really likeheartbroken to hear this because
(01:16:27):
she loves this girl and reallywants to know Megan and while
he's performing the ceremony,Tiffany shows up behind him and
stabs him in the back and thengives a great quote from the
Bride of Frankenstein and says,Oh Chucky, look at us. Don't you
see? We belong dead.
So as Chucky is screaming andcursing, the police lieutenant
(01:16:51):
has been pursuing them the wholetime shows up and he sees that
the dolls are alive andresponsible for all this. So he
tries to intervene and he getshurt. And Jade the girl she
takes the detectives gun andaims at a Chucky who promises to
one day return just like inevery sequel of film series. He
(01:17:12):
says, you know I'm gonna returnbut dying is such a bitch.
And check his shot to death andhis lifeless body collapses next
to his lifeless human shelllieutenant's then radios into
report that Jade and Jessie areinnocent. So he clears them and
allows them to run awaytogether. But before the rest of
(01:17:33):
the police unit can arrive, thelieutenant discovers Tiffany's
body after poking her a fewtimes. She's all burned up and
everything she suddenly springsto life. And he starts screaming
as a screeching sharp tooth babydoll emerges from beneath
Tiffany's dress. Oh my godattacks him. Oh my god. Oh my
(01:17:56):
god, roll credits. Oh,this will be so much fun because
especially because the actorportraying the sheriff father of
Jade is john Ritter. And he's sogood in this movie. You'd know
him from Three's Company and acouple of other you know, silly
(01:18:17):
things. And he hands it up sowell in this. He's having such a
great time. Yeah, so I reallyreally love this movie. I was
really surprised to see that itonly had a 46% rating. And I
thought that I remember ithaving good reviews when it came
out. I seems to me it's one ofthose that the hardcore Chucky
people then like much Initially,I don't know if that's changed,
(01:18:39):
but it's it's a little selfreferential and humorous about
it. So that could be it. Alittle bit of trivia. This is
Brad duris personal favorite ofthe childsplay movies. Yeah.
I love this. There was a plannedalbum of love songs featuring
Brad Dorf, and Jennifer Donnellysinging as their doll
(01:19:01):
counterparts.
It is revealed in the moviecommentary that Tiffany was to
sing Killing Me Softly with hissong.
He was intended to sing House ofthe Rising Sun and the two are
to share a duet of hit the roadjack. Oh my god, that would have
been amazing. Yeah.
Come on, mondo. So this isnumber four. This is followed by
(01:19:24):
seed of Chucky just five Curseof Chucky which is six and
finally cult of Chucky which isnumber seven. So seven movies in
the franchise as of this time,Pandora that's an a remake and a
planned TV series. Oh, that'scoming. Yeah, that is just
called Chucky. And when I sawthat on IMDB, I looked into that
(01:19:45):
and Don Manzini corrected orcreated it and has written them
will probably drop. Wow.
I would, I would assume so. Huh?
Wow. I do kind of like when acreative who latches on and just
says yeahbryden to sucker out. This is
Megan, my career. I'm going tokeep going with it as long as I
can. There have also been somany people who who back away
(01:20:06):
Well, I mean Spielberg is reallyfamous example of this he didn't
want to do just to write. Andwhen they kept pressuring him,
he came up with an idea that wascompletely different. And that
makes sense because just likeall of these movies, Friday, the
13th Jaws, any of those kind ofmovies. You can't really tell
(01:20:26):
anything but that story over andover again, right?
Spielberg has sent said I wishthat I had done just to because
now this sequel, and all theother sequels on it are based on
this movie I did and I hadnothing to do with them and
couldn't at least try and steerthem in the right direction. One
(01:20:50):
last bit of trivia, the taglineson this movie I find
here comes the bride there goeseveryone else
the honeymoons gonna be killed.
Oh, or my favorite. ThisHalloween Chucky gets lucky.
(01:21:13):
I remember the the trailer forthis showing the the silhouettes
of them the dolls making love inthe bloodsoaked room and I
remember everybody in thetheater just going wide.
I like it. It might be myfavorite of Chucky movies,
actually. But I was never a hugeTrekkie fan so that probably
(01:21:34):
doesn't bode well. The first oneis a good killer adult movie.
Yes, second and third one arestuck in that. That jaws or
Friday the 13th remake thingwhere not remake but sequel
where it's just the same fuckingstory over and over. Yeah, this
one they go completely differentwith it.
(01:21:54):
And the subsequent sequels alsogo completely different with
each one to a to a much lessereffect. So very cool. I I'm
definitely intrigued. I willdefinitely check that out. It's
fun. You don't really need tosee it, though.
I was gonna say is it just morelike children find doll? Yeah.
(01:22:16):
And, and it's the same kid inthe first three. Yeah, and stuff
like that. This one is so fun.
Because at one point like johnRitter, he, he gets killed by
getting a ton of nails in hishead. And he looks a little like
pinhead as he's dead. And Chuckyis looking at him and going, why
is this look so familiar to me?
Of course, dimension has theHellraiser franchise as well. It
(01:22:40):
is like you know, just it's justa fun movie for horror fans. Oh,
that's really neat. So thatbrings us to the end of the
show. And the next topic, whichI wish, Eric Do you know what it
is?
What is Vanessa's next topic? Ohmy god. Oh, let her tell you.
Yes. So um, I mean, this isgonna be a complete shocker to
(01:23:02):
you guys. But I noticed that Iseemed like we had not yet
really talked about cults. Wetalked about secret societies.
And we've talked about ideaskind of around things that might
be Satan and things. Yeah, butnot straight up cold. So cults,
we're doing Colts. Nice. Well, Ihope I can think of something
(01:23:23):
good for this episode.
tonight.
I have faith in you. I bet. Ibet you'll figure it out.
All right, well, hey, Big thanksto everybody. But an especially
big shout out to Dan wood ski.
Who, who wrote on the Facebookpage that he was watching
(01:23:45):

God. That's so yeah, it's a goodone too. Nice. Nice one to go
for. Yeah. If you guys arewatching something that we have
recommended, let us know. Yeah.

no idea if anybody actuallycares with the stuff we're

that. Links us tweet it.

(01:24:26):

Kid to and is in season three ofgo Rekha is a producer and has a
small fun role in this martialarts film called paper tigers.
It's actually going to be at thebeuran drive in as part of the
Seattle Asian American FilmFest, March 6 at 7pm. So if you
