Unknown (00:03):
Oh, I'm sorry, did I
break your concentration?
Somewhere betweenscience and superstition
to show youStrange Aeons. Strange Aeons
(00:28):
radio. That's Eric over there.
Hello.
That's Vanessa over there. Goodafternoon. I'm Kelly. Hey guys,
we had a listener sent us a nicelittle message. And I think that
you know him Vanessa. It was itwas mica guy.
(00:48):
Yeah, he's a good friend ofmine. He's a horror film
aficionado. Big fan of our showas well.
Clearly has amazing taste. Yeah, thank you. Yeah. All
around super great guy.
I should hold off on saying theamazing taste because he just
watch a movie. I love totaste. taste. Yeah. So what was
his recommendation? I didn'twatch it. So
(01:15):
well, this is my kind of movie.
So I feel like this is why itwas suggested. He asked us to
watch the killing of Satan, which is available only on
YouTube. can't figure it outquite why this hasn't gotten a
criterion release yet.
interesting choice. I can thinkof another group or two that
might put a movie like this out,but criterion would not be my
(01:38):
friend.
This movie is fucking bonkers.
Really. It's a it's from thePhilippines. I wasn't exactly
sure what I was getting into itfirst. But as soon as the head
there's a lot of possessionsgoing on in here and exorcisms.
And a one of the guys head doesa 360 you know, exercise style
(02:02):
only starts spinning just roundaround around around like, you
know, so I was like, oh, okay, where's this gonna go?
I have a lot of snakes.
There's a lot of snakes and alot of everything in it. There
is a there is a ridiculouslylarge boulder that is chasing
(02:23):
this guy down a path. And thensquishes him. I mean, like a
pancake. We see him afterwards.
There's a lot of wizardry goingon. The devil makes an
appearance, played by twodifferent actors. And as I think
they were both supposed to bethe devil and not sure why they
were played by two differentactors. He is wearing I guess
(02:45):
the best I can describe it islike a Halloween costume of the
devil, you know, the red suitwithout a burqa and the
pitchfork and the and theheadpiece that kind of goes
around with the horn sick enoughthat I was like, Oh, well,
that's the devil. Clearly.
(03:07):
You know what I have seen thismovie? Mike, I did have me watch
it. I was very drunk. I rememberjust feeling extremely bad for
the snakes. I wasI was kind of like, what is the
audience for this movie? It'sit's almost childlike in his
portrayal of good and evil. Butthen there were all these other
(03:30):
things going on that I was like, well, they're taking themselves
very seriously with the, theCatholic icon of iconography.
There's a word that I can't say.
and stuff like that. And I waslike, somebody knows an awful
lot about religion and, and putit into us filmmaking. No, it's,
(03:54):
you know, whenever you get thesemovies from a different culture,
you kind of got a step back andgo, Okay, how do they look at
this? But you know, if I if Isaid what I thought about this
movie based on culture, it wouldsound very insulting, I'm sure
to the Philippines, probably probably. I mean, it
reminds me a lot of those movieposters that you see for like
Rambo, or, you know, but withsomebody from, like a country
(04:18):
far away that perhaps does nothave as many access points as we
do to television into movietheaters. And it's like a
guestimate poster of what like,Stallone looks like, what it
should be what they think themovie is. And there's like a
whole huge range of theseposters. And they are Oh mazing
(04:42):
So Google, Google this if youget a chance to just kind of
like Strange movie posters, or Idon't know,
kind of like Bruno matej kind ofstuff, or,
yeah, it felt well not quite asaccomplished as but I did feel
like the old The way someonewould would recommend this movie
to somebody is if they had heardthem say, over and over. I love
(05:06):
really bad movies. Yeah, soclearly he's, he's a listener,
and I really appreciate that.
Thank you, Micah.
Oh, I have to be checking out tothem.
Yeah. In other news, though, Iwatched a bunch of movies have
snowed in and I saw somethingcalled St. Maude.
Oh my God, I've been wanting tosee this for me too.
(05:28):
It is the feel bad movie of theyear. Sure. It is very well
made. Very dark. This is a movieEric that every once in a while
could have used a laugh. Okay. Ido remember saying to Eric, if I
didn't know any better, I thinkthis wasn't a 24 movie. And he
(05:49):
responded with it isn't a 24somehow missed that logo at the
beginning. I will say that therewere it's very slow. And there
were a lot of times that I wasabout ready to check out and
then it pulled me back in. Andthe final act is disturbing.
(06:10):
really disturbing. So after gas, yeah, available only as a rental
right now.
Well, it came out last year inthe UK. And one of my favorite
film reviewers. It was like hisfilm of the year. And so I've
known about it for a while andreally wanted to see it. So I'm
not surprised that it's got somekind of weird distribution
(06:32):
issue. Yeah, as far as likeseeing it at home.
Yeah. When we were doing the2020 rundown, I looked for a
long time for hurricanes here.
No, no, no. No, it's only 21movie. Now.
It's interesting that you werelooking forward to that so much.
Because when I was doing someresearch, and it became
available, it was just postafter post of I have been
(06:53):
waiting for this movie for allthis amount. And I was thinking
to myself, I'd never even heardof this. Yeah. And so watching
it also, I was I was expectingsomething quite different than
what I got. But I'm not sayingthat I was disappointed at all
interesting. Okay.
Yeah, I'm I only know of thetrailer and a sense generally of
(07:14):
perhaps the tone of it. So I'mreally excited to see like, what
it ends up being? Well, as yousaid, we're snowed in. So my
choices in what I was watchingdefinitely diverged away from
the norm. So I'll throw twotogether, because I'm not going
to bother talking about eitherone. I watched, framing Brittany
(07:36):
and also to all the boys. I'veloved before always in forever.
SoI don't know, either. Brittany,
one I'm familiar with becauseit's popped up on documentary.
It is. Yeah, it's um, it's adocumentary where Unfortunately,
the premise is the whole thing.
So like, you never learnanything beyond the first five
(07:58):
minutes. Like it's kind of justreiterate information you
already know. Yeah. So yeah, um,but you know, it's heart is in
the right place. They never onceactually managed to talk to
Britney Spears. So that kind ofsucks. But they're trying to
represent her as best they can.
So I don't know. And then to allthe boys, it's the third of the
(08:21):
two all the boys franchise forNetflix based off of some fun
girl tween books series. Andvery sweet. Good, good wrap up
of the three films. Hey,Vanessa, do
you know what we talked about onthis book?
I know But look, there is no.
And I've been having a lot ofrabies shots and I don't have as
(08:42):
much time. So.
Yeah, all right. Yeah.
Speaking of like that one filmyou recommended. The Slender Man
poster. Oh, the empty man. Ikeep almost turning to watch.
It's two hours and 20 minutes.
Okay, Iguess. It is kind of another
pitch to me off more than ahorror film. That's over 88
(09:02):
minutes. Yeah, come on. But speaking the other
side of the coin. Somebody sentme a short film they wanted me
to check out that was proof ofconcept. I think for a TV
series. It's in the works ascalled the shorts called in a in
a foreign town. But uh, 11minutes long. Damn is good.
Really, really well acted reallywell shot creepy as hell.
(09:27):
Featured. David wrests. Now fromthe shield. He was the cop who
wasn't featured very much gothis face burned.
Yeah.
And he's great in it. He's goneon to being like tons and tons
of stuff. But I'm hoping thatwhatever this so let's see if I
(09:47):
get some more info on it fromthe people about if this is
something that's in production,or it's going to be coming out
because if this is an example,it definitely will be better
than the creep show series. Wow.
Hopefully that That's actuallystarting to get done.
The proof of concept for a showthat's going to be anthology
styles.
Because it's the 11 minutes is aencapsulated story. Oh, God.
(10:11):
Damn, that sounds exciting.
Yeah. So hopefully that'llhappen. And I'll do another
quick one, kind of like you did, because I'm not going to talk
about it. Because what you saidnailed exactly this documentary.
VHS masti. Have you seen thisone pop up? It's a it's another
documentary about the censorshipboard in the 80s in the UK. And
(10:32):
and now how you said in thefirst five minutes, I'm
Brittany, you're done. This, unfortunately, was one of those
kind of things. That's such abummer where the entire movie
was, after they explained whatit was then they another guy
come on and explain what it was.
And then another guy kind ofcome on. So and then, then it
became well, I don't know if heshould censor things. And then
and well, I don't know if heshould censor things. Well,
(10:53):
maybe you should say anything.
So fast forward to like 20minutes. Same thing for another
20 minutes. Same kind of things.
All right. If you have neverheard of the video nasties, this
is actually a pretty goodbreakdown of what it was. But if
you've seen anything about it,this this will just tell you
what you've already learned.
(11:14):
There's a little disappointedbecause there's some deep people
involved. And it looks. It waswell done. It's like more
content guys. There's so much inthat story.
And it's called VHS. nasciovideo nasty VHS. Okay. Ah, I
watched Willie's Wonderland. Oh,Nicolas Cage, this cage. How is
(11:35):
it? Okay.
Oh, great. Mandyhas no idea. It was fun. Yeah.
It is, you know, an hour and ahalf of Nicolas Cage battling
demonic animatronic toys at aChucky cheese. Okay, he he's
because of movie, he ends uphaving to stay at this place and
(12:00):
clean up this, this old Chuckycheese style place. And then
finds out that this is what thetown does to appease the demonic
forces that live with hisperformance notable in the fact
that not one line of dialogue.
That's what I've heard, really.
(12:22):
Oh, my God. And he, hischaracter is is not at all
bothered by the fact that thesethings are happening. He
continues to mop and clean upand every time one of these
attacks him, he kills it. Andthen mops and cleans up. So it's
(12:43):
a very strange movie. But I haveto say I was entertained. I
mean, I didn't. I didn't touchthe phone once during this.
Always a good sign. I read agreat little YouTube thing on
something like that. It's likeone of the hardest questions
about entertainment. is NicolasCage a great actor or a terrible
actor? Yes, yes, exactly. Nickonly to
(13:06):
inclusion Nicolas Cage, like youdon't need to know anything
beyond that.
But if you go back way back tolike, what the moon moon stones
and things like that marriage isvery straightforward actor in
that like think it was Oscarnominated for that one, man.
So he has some sort to go crazy.
It was before Snake Eyes.
Yeah. Well, it might have beensnake. Dr. angries after that.
(13:29):
Yeah.
But I don't know if it's somuch. He went crazy. He just
said, screw it. I'm just gonnabe called it Kabuki style
theater. Acting and you wantedto bring that to the masses?
Yeah, he'sYeah. Fine. Find the treasure.
If nothing else. I do think he'san artist. I think he's doing it
(13:52):
for the arts.
Well, absolutely. I mean, hewouldn't do all those low budget
weird films. He never would havebeen in Mandy, or what was the
other one like Joe something oranother? Like he if there's an
indie filmmaker who purchasedhim a lot of times, he'll say
yes. Yeah. Because he just wantsto try new stuff. He wants to
support people, which I think isawesome. Well, and he's played
around in the genre for enoughtime that I think that he
(14:15):
realizes, you know what, thepeople who absolutely appreciate
whatever I'm doing, or thehorror fans, oh, yeah. So mom
and dad Mandy. Come out ofspace. And then this, you know,
in a row is kind of telling.
Yeah, for true. Absolutely.
(14:36):
Well, I've been deep divingdeeper into my trying to figure
out moon night situation. So Iread the Jeff Lumira run, which
is pretty recent. And that's theone where he's insane. And I'm
just about to start the WarrenEllis run where he is also
insane. So and then at somepoint, I'm probably going to go
(14:58):
to the ones where he is actuallyLike a hero. Awesome. Okay.
Now in the who's the Jeff? Jeff?
Lumiere. Real recent one.
Is that the one where he's in asuit? Yes. Okay.
I think both. Let's see. Well, the Jeff Lumira one. He's three
people. I'm trying to think ofone of them's in a suit. He's in
(15:20):
a straight jacket. I thinkyou're thinking of the Warren
Ellis one in a suit. Yeah, Ithink the Warren Ellis one. I'm
not sure which one's olderbetween the two probably worn
elss. Older.
I read that run. And I wasbitterly disappointed now, which
because I think Warren Ellis, you know, has interesting takes
on characters, but this one Iwas kind of like, so I'm very
(15:43):
curious to see what you think ofthese and yeah, all the
speculation leading up to theseries is like, what is it going
to be?
I know, well, exactly. And it'sbecause as you pointed out,
like, it just has so manyoptions of directions. And yeah,
are they going to play him asthe Batman? Or are they going to
play him as the crazy dude?
And Wanda vision has shown thatthey are not afraid to take some
(16:06):
chances. Andthat was the other thing that I
saw, too, was one. Yeah.
One division is getting cool.
Yeah, it's really damn good. Youknow, it's a good time you get
up like on a Friday morning, allthose do one division last
night. Hey, go see that.
Speaking of excited to seeagain, joining the Disney
lineup, the original MuppetShow, oh my God, oh, wow.
(16:30):
Finally, all five seasons of theoriginal round. Apparently some
of them may be they have somestuff cut out of it. I haven't
been able to verify that. But afew years ago, there was
actually a very well doneshortly of the Muppet Show that
came out where put them like ina newsroom. And they took a lot
of slack from morons who I don'tknow if they ever actually
(16:51):
watched the original series, maybe just watch the Muppet
Babies. They're talking about, well, this has a lot of adult
style humor. And well, theirminds are going to be goddamn
blown. Went back like okay, watch the first one. And there's
dancing in a bar with puppetssitting at a table with a bunch
of shots around them, but butstick shots. Rito Murano is the
(17:13):
first guest. And she's dancingaround throwing this puppet to
the wall very violently shovinghim all over the place. And
there's a cigarette smokingwarning at the beginning of the
episode, and just all kinds oflittle violence things and all
this stuff going. Yeah, that'sright. I seem to remember. It's
(17:37):
wasn't a kid show, per se. Yeah.
But it had plenty of elementskids loved obviously.
I remember watching that with mydad every Sunday night, and he
would check along with me mostof the time. That stuff I didn't
understand.
It was at its height. As readinga little bit after watching it.
It was on in 100 countries. Ohmy god, one of the watch most
(17:59):
shows most watched shows in theentire world for its run. And
the only reason it stopped beingshown is Jim Henson said I'm
going to do the dark crystal.
I'm going to do this thingthat's going to totally take up
my time. So we're not doing theMuppet Show anymore.
I didn't know that's whatfinally cancelled it. He
canceled it.
Yeah, yeah. And there's athere's so little singing duet
of three kind of real lookingMuppets. That one is very
(18:23):
obviously Jim Henson. And Ithink once Frank Oz, I had no
idea who the other guy was, butit's like, and it's Jim Henson's
Kermit voice wasn't too far offhis original voice. It sort of
sounded like Kermit singing. ButRalph the dog, Miss Piggy starts
out a little weird, but it waslike, Okay, this is this still
(18:44):
works. Still entertaining.
Definitely going back andwatching a bunch more of those
episodes.
I've always wanted to see thembecause like, as a kid, I loved
Muppets stuff. And I enjoyed theMuppet films, but had not really
been I was just a little tooyoung to
get started in 77. Yeah,I was little to ingesting quite
(19:05):
yet. And you know, in the 80s,it's not like you could watch
like older TV necessarily, unless it was in syndication. So
yeah, yeah. Yeah. It's weird towatch older shows at times ago.
Yeah, this was on the air. Andif you didn't see it, you
probably were never going at thetime you thought I'm never ever
going to be able to see thisshow again.
(19:26):
Yeah, that's true. Before we allbought every season a friends on
DVD.
Now you can watch damn nearwhatever you want, whenever you
want. And people still complain.
Well, there were plenty of thoseshows that were like, you know,
half season fillers or somethinglike that. That only lasted for
12 episodes, and we're onlyreally going to be put on
because they didn't haveanything else. And those show
(19:48):
shows are lost to us.
Yeah, yeah. And but every oncein a while one will show up
weirdly on YouTube, that one youtalked about and we expect but
but yeah, there's a lot of TV.
That's Never gonna be shownagain because they just
destroyed the negatives or reusethe tapes or whatever the
situation is rotted away, andthey didn't back it up.
(20:10):
Okay, guys, should we take alittle break? Before we go to
break? I just want to say I sawthe latest wrong turn wrong turn
2020 Oh God,you guys can pass on that. Oh,
by the guy who wrote theoriginal, really not a how to
remake or reimagining in anyway. Not even the story you're
used to. Wow, I was like wow, okay. Let's take a break or
(20:32):

Vanessa, this was your choicethis week. You want to start us
off?
Absolutely. Well. I have to Ihave to fess up. Part of the
reason why I went with cults isbecause we've been talking a lot
(22:03):
about Elizabeth Olsen as ofrecent times, and her
performance in one division andI was very much like, no, she's
really good. She really isreally good. I saw this film
years ago before I had any ideawho she was. And so I wanted to
watch and talk about this film.
So I chose the 2011. Film MarthaMarcy may Marlene.
(22:40):
Hello.
Hello.
I'm not sure. upstate I think.
Find out where you are and Iwill come I can't wait.
(23:03):
She's here now. She seems okay.
She said she had some boyfriendin the Catskills.
He looked like a Marcy May.
You've got a really nice placehere. What's yours? It is mine.
(23:24):
Yesterday, feeling where you can't tell if
something's in memory orblame you for not trusting
people. If you're ever going tohave a meaningful relationship,
you need to let your guard downand want to help you.
(23:54):
What happened to you? You're ateacher, and a leader
barcino proven shooter.
They're living animals. So shootme.
I know who I am. I am a teacherand the leader you just never
let me be thatshe should stay with us. And we
can't ignore the fact that herbehavior is insane.
(24:19):
We all have never heard of this.
Really? I remember you'rementioning it. But I think
that's the first time I'd everheard.
Oh my gosh.
I mean, it definitely came outduring this period of time in
which like indie films were likepopping up and they weren't like
(24:41):
prevalent and you know, theyweren't mainstream yet. But
people that there were plenty ofthem getting made. It's
definitely on the heels ofsomething like a Gus Van Sant
style picture. So RottenTomatoes. 90% from critics. Not
bad. 71% from auto Also not bad.
Yeah, budget was 600,000. Andthe gross was 4.7 million. Wow.
(25:03):
It's 102 minutes long. It'sdirected and written by a guy
named Sean Durkin. He has fivedirecting credits total, even
now, which is strange because inthe last 910 years, he really
should have done a bunch. But hedid a short film, he did a
(25:25):
miniseries called South cliff.
And then another film that hewrote and produced called the
nest, he has been doing a littlebit more producing. He's got 16
credits for that, but it Ihaven't heard of any of the
projects that he was working on.
Um, starring Elizabeth ElizabethOlsen, who has now been in 26
things. This was her second filmpart. And previously to the
(25:50):
other film that she'd been in.
She's only done two full houseprojects, as you know, filler in
human being for Michelle. Sonice. So nice. Yes, my sister
clearly had avoided the crap outof, you know, hollywood until a
certain point after after shewas in this she's since gone on
(26:13):
to be in Unfortunately, the oldboy remake. She did, of course,
as we all know, her show up inCaptain America as Wanda
maximoff and then continued tobe in the series. And she's also
really unfortunately andGodzilla as Elle Brody. I think
I cannot stress enough howlittle they give her in that
(26:35):
film and how bad her characteris, at least written it's it's,
she's that is not a goodperformance, or, I don't know
character for her at all. She'sdone a lot of alternate,
alternative style moving so shedid Ingrid goes West Wind River,
Kodachrome and 20 episodes of aTV show called sorry for your
(26:56):
loss. I don't know what that isalso starring Sarah Paulson
spent in 66 things you mightknow her from American Horror
Story, all of it. Or now morerecently, nurse wretched, as
nurse wretched. And also in thisfilm, john Hawkes, who plays
(27:17):
Patrick, kind of a cult leader,if you will, kind of Manson of
the of the film. You may haveseen him in any number of
things. He's been in 136projects. So you definitely
you'll see him and be like, man,I know his face looks familiar.
He was in three billboards,Winter's Bone eastbound and
(27:38):
down, and a bunch of Deadwood.
So nice. Yes, his first role wasin the 1984 Police Academy as
driver of teskey truckuncredited. So way to go. And
then one other name I just wantto throw out there. There's an
Hugh dancy plays a husbandcharacter in this. And you will
(27:59):
know him as well Graham inHannibal. So this film, it's
definitely it's definitely dearto my heart. So I'm going to be
pretty loving towards it. Butthe plot is that Martha, aka
mercy man, is living in thissort of farm styled cult. And
after enduring a sort of typicalday of labor and life in the
(28:21):
commune, where she's like, wesee her washing up and you see a
bunch of women like standing ina hallway, waiting for the men
to finish eating. And then theyleave and then the women are
allowed to eat. After goingthrough this. The next morning,
it's all quiet. Everyone'ssleeping in the various places
around the house, and she has abag and she goes off into the
(28:41):
woods. She's immediately chasedby cult members who were like
Marcy may where you were going, where are you going? And she's
just booking it in the woods, like she kind of slips into the
woods, and then she's justgoing, she manages to slip them
by and ends up in a diner.
(29:03):
Suddenly, one of the members ofher family sits down next to
her, and says, All right, well, why are you here? She's like,
well, I just want to go intotown. He's like, I could have
given you a ride into town. Andshe's like, Well, okay, I'm
going, I'm here now. And he'slike, Okay, well, like,
let's go in the truck. Let's gohome. And she says no, and He
(29:26):
kind of looks at her and he'slike, okay, and he kisses her in
a way she does not want to bekissed, and leaves. So there's
obviously a lot of veryintensive pressurized cults
behavior going on in this sofar. She calls up her strange
sister to she I don't think shequite knows why she called her
(29:49):
initially and then finally kindof asks her to come and get her.
Even on the phone with hersister. She's kind of like, I, I
shouldn't be here. I need to goback. I need to go back. I
shouldn't be here. But hersister does come and get her.
And the rest of the film is herwith her sister who she has not
talked to you in two years andher sister's husband, who's
(30:09):
British, for reasons and kind ofsussing out this sort of massive
quantity of baggage betweenthem. While at the same time
doing a lot of these flashbacksto why she ended up in the cold
what she did in the cold and howshe ended up being as under
their thumb as she was. She hasnot seen her her sister, as I
(30:30):
said, For for two years. And itjust makes it impossible for her
to open up her sister's verymicro managing. Like she in the
first scene with them together, she comes out of the shower,
Elizabeth, Olsen's character,Martha comes out of the shower,
and she's dripping wet, and hersister immediately walks over to
her and starts drying her off.
And she's like, you're drippingeverywhere. And it's just a lot
(30:52):
of that. It's like, why aren'tyou going to eat this food? Why
are you Why aren't you dressingthis way? Why aren't you? Why
don't we put this makeup on you.
It's just a lot of constant. Youcan just feel this thing that's
between them. And it's reallynicely portrayed. And you
realize very quickly, like youwant her to open up, you want
(31:12):
more, it'd be like, Yeah, I justran away from a colt. And
instead, she's not. She justsays, You know, I got out of the
thing with a bad boyfriend. Andnow I'm here. And see. And, of
course, that makes matters much, much worse. Because the longer
Martha is there, the more shestarts to devolve, and also
(31:33):
she's so used to life in thecult and kind of became an
adult. It was her really mainyears of learning who she is as
a person. So she doesn't reallyknow how things are meant to be.
So she swims completely nude.
She constantly wants to bearound her sister and her
sister's husband to the pointwhere she gets scared at night
and goes down into their bedroomwhile they're having sex and
(31:56):
just curls up at the foot oftheir bed and is like I'm here
now. And they stop and freakout. And like why the fuck are
you here. And she's like, well, the beds really big, you have
room. So there's just a lot, she's clearly exhibiting
behavior that she had had beforeshe doesn't want to eat. And
(32:18):
that's because in the cold, you're not allowed to eat until
nighttime when you're the women.
So it's just all these littlethings. But like I said, her
sister is just crazy. She'sreally micromanaging her to the
point where she's like, you needto drink your tea in this
certain way. And while Marthaisn't outright objecting, she's
(32:38):
clearly battling demons on twofronts, this entire film is seen
through Marcy Martha's lens. Sowhile it's flipping between
memories of the cult, and heradjusting to life with her
sister, you have these reallynice transition moments. So for
example, she'll be gardeningwith her sister and putting a
plant in the ground and hersister's like, wow, you're
really good at gardening. Andshe's like, Oh, yeah, no, I did
(33:03):
it a little bit. And then we cutto her gardening, of course, and
the cold. So there's a lot ofthese really nice smooth
transitions between timeperiods. It might feel a little
on the nose, but I think itworks because I feel like we're
in her brain. I feel like weunderstand everything through
her perspective in this kind ofgaslighting and brainwashing
that she undergoes. From dayone, we can see why that doesn't
(33:29):
seem strange to her and thethings she needs and the things
that Cole is providing. Sounfortunately, it does get crazy
in the cold, of course, sostarts off as just a cool
farming community, you know, with some nice people, and she
really wants to belong somewhereand not be rejected yet again,
by whatever in life. And thenshe's drugged and wakes up being
(33:50):
sex with by the cult leader.
Yeah. And then she's sittingdown in a room and a girl comes
up to her and she says, I knowyou're gonna think that the bad
thing happened to you, but itdidn't. A good a good thing
happened to you. We've all beenthrough this together, it brings
us together breaks down all yourwalls that you came in here
(34:11):
with. It's a cleansing ritual, and now you're one of us. And
it's like harrowing. Because youcan see that the this constant
kind of needling that thesepeople are doing to not only
convince her but convincedthemselves that this is the
right thing to do. And like Isaid she does then become a part
of it up until the point whereshe feels like it has gone too
(34:32):
far. A very Manson style thingoccurs. Some people are injured,
that are not part of the cultperhaps and she just can't get
over it. And while she's havingtrouble getting past this event,
everyone's really coming down onher about it and being like, you
need to fucking get past this.
Like you got to that you can'thave these walls while you're
(34:54):
here. Like we don't havepermission and they start to get
much more aggressive with her soshe sort of becomes an outsider.
And that allows her to breakaway from them. It's interesting
because Martha at her sister'shome becomes more and more more
paranoid that the cult has sentpeople to watch her and are
going to kidnap her and take heraway. And you think she's crazy?
(35:14):
It feels like she's crazy. Butthere is a line where you're
like, maybe she isn't crazy.
Like there's a, her sister andher sister's husband throw this
party. And Martha sees thebartender and walks over to him.
She's like, I know, you. I knowyou. And there's a He's like,
(35:36):
Oh, do you want like a drink orsomething? And she's like that I
used to drink that. And it waslike the her drink, which she
gave up while she was at thecoal. And he starts to pour her
a drink. And she's like, whywould you give that to me, I
don't drink anymore. And juststarts freaking out of him
yelling at him throwing thingsat him and tell him to, you
know, leave and being afraidthat something's you know,
(35:58):
people are coming after her. Andagain, not telling her sister
and this guy, why she's freakingout. So they just think she's a
nutcase. And they want to sendher away, the film ends pretty
abruptly. That's kind of theworst part about it. To be
honest, it doesn't feelresolved. However, I think the
(36:19):
journey is definitely the thepowerful part about this film,
just a couple of things thatreally gripped me in this, the
pacing is incredibly well done.
Also, I love the lens because itfeels extremely non judgmental,
like, you're not looking at acult going, ooh, they're cold,
and they're bad or whatever, they don't tell you ever what
they are, you just have to kindof figure it out and kind of
(36:40):
figure out who's in charge andwhy they're doing what they're
doing. It has this sort of, itgives this idea of the closeness
and the community of the Kol andwhy that matters to her. But
then, of course, there'sfreaking rape and brainwashing.
So and but and how that thatdevelops So naturally, is just
really, it gives an intimatefeel to this film, everything
(37:03):
about this film is very subtle.
There's a lot of extreme closeups on Elizabeth Olsen's face.
And she, there's this one pointwhere the cult leader who just
assaulted her, gets up in frontof the group and sings a song
just for her. And he's, youknow, he says, I call this,
(37:24):
Marcy May, which is the name hegets her. And she's smiling. And
everyone's like, oh, he made youwith a song and you know, kind
of look like, Isn't that nice?
And her smile just slowly acrossthis song turns into not a
frown. But just like a neutral, like, it's not okay, you can
just tell through her her littleteeny tiny facial expressions
(37:48):
that things are not okay. Andyou can really read into where
she's at. Which is why I thinkshe's a good actress. Because
this film is really good. Thetension is walking crazy in this
movie as well. You just sort oflike oh my god, somebody love
God. Talk about what's going onor like, deal with anything. The
cinematography is super, super, super good. I won't say the tone
(38:13):
is for everybody. It's a slowburn. It's definitely a slow
burn. It's an indie feel itdefinitely like I said, Gus Van
Sant was making a lot of indie,of course films during the time.
And they're walking exhaustingto watch because you're just
following somebody through theirlife with nothing happening for
most of it. Maybe one thinghappens in his films. It feels
(38:35):
of part of that. That kind ofgenre of filmmaking. trivia, I
don't have a lot for you. But itwas shot in 20 days. And Shawn
dirt. Yeah, it's fast. SeanDurkin, the director wanted an
unknown actress to play the roleof Martha Elizabeth Olsen had to
audition twice. And when she didland the role Filming began Two
(38:59):
weeks later, so she had verylittle time to prepare. Sean
Durkin offered the role directlyto Sarah Paulson, the sister,
being a fan of hers from Studio16. Sean Durkin had also made a
short film previously calledMary last seen and apparently
it's considered a prequel. Ididn't know about this until I
started doing research, so Ididn't get a chance to check it
(39:20):
out. But it's kind of about agirl like how you join a cult.
And this film is about how youget out of a cult. The name of
the character is Martha, whichis her actual name. Marcy May,
like I said, is her Colt name.
And then Marlene is the name ofall the Colts women what they
have to use and call themselveswhen they answered the telephone
(39:42):
in the house. And it has a lotof similarities to the Manson
cult a clearly just somebodystudied the Manson's and went
with it. Just the structure thethe personality, the events feel
very familiar.
There are music references toJackson see Frank. I don't know
(40:02):
who that is. Mary lestineactually won Best Short Film at
the 2010 Cannes Film Festival,Martha. Marcy, May, Marlene,
which I will never for all thetime, remember what the title of
this is. It was selected forSundance and one us directing
(40:25):
Award Best Drama. And it gotinto the 36 Toronto
International Film Festival, andthen was given distribution by
Fox Searchlight. It had a prettylimited release. And the film
took inspiration from Margot atthe wedding, which is another
incredible movie. That's my coldfilm.
Would you say this is when youwhen you got into it, I was
(40:46):
thinking Oh, thriller, but itsounds more like a drama.
It's somewhere. It's almost likethriller, drama horror, at all
this stuff in between. It's sosubtle that it's it's hard to
commit to a genre, frankly. Imean, you could just call it a
drama, but there's so muchsuspense. And then there's so
many harrowing moments. But itdoes have a lot of that thriller
(41:09):
to it. But it's too slow to calla thriller. So
what about you said that it kindof ends without resolving
things. I don't need to knowwhat happens. But do we find out
if the cult is trying to get herback or not? You?
That's kind of the question. Andthat's the question mark we end
(41:30):
on. Okay. Yeah. So, yeah, sosomething is happening, and we
just aren't sure if it's a thingor not.
All right. Yeah. Wow. Sogo check it out, people.
I'll go next, if you don't mind.
Sure. All right. I was for surethat I was going to be taking a
(41:53):
Halloween Curse of MichaelMyers. Halloween six. cult
movie. Where are you now?
Yeah, it's got Paul Rudd'sfirst. He's so young and
babyface that I did notrecognize him until about
halfway through because I keptgoing. When does Paul Rudd come
(42:14):
in? Even though he's the lead ithas a 9% rating on Rotten
Tomatoes. And I was like, I canmake a I can make a case for
this being a not too bad movie.
You know, watching thedirector's cut. I thought there
was a lot to really like in it.
We talked last week aboutremakes and how hard it is to
(42:36):
make or not remakes. But sequelshow hard it is to make a sequel
to a movie like this becauseyou're just making the same
movie over and over. And thisone is like the fuck we are
we're throwing Colt a town ofthat's an entire cult based on
the demon that's inhabitingMichael Myers and all this shit.
It got kind of cool. I was verydisappointed to find out that
(42:59):
this movie leads to nothing inthe next sequel. Oh, so what I
did instead. Last week I did.
Bride of Chucky. Oh my god, thefourth movie in the childsplay
series. Oh my god. And this weekI took cult of Chucky the
seventh movie in the child'splay series.
(43:23):
I was six my babysitter wasmurdered.
He never caught him.
Justice wasnever was That's right. He was a
fantasy.
Are you feeling better now?
I don't blame you for beingafraid. I was very ill.
(43:48):
Chucky told me.
He's coming for him. It'simportant that we all explore it
together as a group.
I'm Chuckyfirst to kill each and every one
of you the most horrible waysyou can imagine.
(44:11):
And then he'll kill me too.
Are you afraid of the truth?
terrified to call me sick.
(44:42):
Classic never goes out of style.
Wow. Oh my from 2017 Have youguys seen this? Oh, yeah.
curious to hear your take. I'veonly seen the first Chucky so
could find no information on thebudget. The box office had 2.2
(45:05):
million which is interesting andI'll get to that. Rotten
Tomatoes critics 79% Wow.
Audience 46% Wow, that's weird.
Isn't that weird for over film, especially
Written and directed by DonManzini, who has written all of
the child's play movies, and healso directed seed of Chucky and
(45:31):
curse of Chucky, which were thetwo movies before this after
bride of Chucky. He wrote all ofthe child plays movies and of
course, he's written a couple ofepisodes of Hannibal on Channel
zero. It stars Brad Dorf is thevoice of Chucky a crazy One Flew
Over the Cuckoo's Nest exocystthree Dune Lord of the Rings
(45:53):
Deadwood, Rob Zombie's Halloweenand Halloween two eyes of Laura
Mars. It also serves Fiona Dorffrom Deadwood, True Blood, the
purge TV series, The Blacklistthe stand, and she was of course
produced by red dwarf. Oh, she'shis daughter. Yes. Oh my god.
(46:13):
And it says Alex Vincent, who isnow an adult and plays the same
part. He played in the veryfirst Child's Play mostly as a
kid. Wow. He plays Andy. And sothis opens with Andy is out on a
date. And his date. This wasobviously like a eHarmony or
(46:34):
something like that. Yeah.
Because she has looked up hispast online and she's saying,
you know, some things that she'slike concerned a little bit and,
and he says, I don't blame you.
His line of dialogue is, I wassick. So my babysitter was
murdered, along with my teacher,my caseworker and 36 other
people over the years.
(46:59):
How about another day?
And when she leaves early, hereturns home. And from a hidden
safe in the wall removes thedecapitated but still alive head
of Chucky. Oh my god on the lastmovie.
Oh my god.
It's all scarred up and burnedand everything and it's talking
(47:21):
to him and kind of egging him onand telling them what a loser he
is and all this stuff and Andypops out a blowtorch and start
slowly torturing Wow, whata roomies.
I was like, Where is this moviegoing? This is amazing.
Meanwhile, Mika from I guess thelast movie, which I didn't see.
(47:43):
She is Fiona Dora. She wasdeemed insane and committed to
an insane asylum after a trial.
For whatever happened in thelast film, I think that her
family was killed by Chucky andit ended it must have ended with
it looking like she did it andChucky going free. So she's
speaking with our psychologist,Dr. Foley. Who knows. Who knows
(48:07):
that wonderful sounding name aton of progress and recognizing
that she not Chuckie killed herfamily. So she's now in a low
security Institute where shemeets a bunch of inmates and
they they all do group therapyand everything. She's in a
wheelchair. She somehow crippledin the last movie, I don't know
(48:29):
if it was a spinal injury orsomething like that. Or perhaps
she was wheelchair bound to theentire movie, I don't know. But
I kind of don't feel like thesemovies, you really need to watch
the entire thing, just to what'sgoing on. At group therapy, and
one of the sessions Dr. Foleybrings out a good guy doll which
(48:50):
if you're not familiar, the goodguy doll is the Chucky doll.
Now, when bread Dorf is in aChucky doll, it looks much
different than it was when it'sjust the regular store but good
guy doll. And she freaks out abit. Where did you get that? And
he's like, I got it from hottopic.
(49:11):
And he's really,oh my god. This is the kind of
humor that these movies have itand I really love it. So she's
kind of shaken but she's able tosay in group therapy that the
doll isn't real and everything.
But later that day, Tiffany, who's Jennifer Tilly, she shows
(49:33):
up to speak with Nika now. Thisis where it gets weird, because
Jennifer Tilly is not playingTiffany from the movie. Jennifer
Tilly is playing the actressJennifer Tilly in this movie. Oh
my god that the Tiffany doll haspossessed. Oh, wait.
(49:57):
Whoa and she comes to talk withNico And then leaves her with
another of the good guy dolls.
So this is starting to getimportant because there are now
two good guy dolls in thisinstitute. There's also the
severed head of cecchi that Andyis torturing that night and the
Institute, a one of the Chuckydolls, but we can't tell which
(50:18):
one comes to life as steals ascalpel and starts creeping down
to Nico's room. And he entersthe room and then sees a bunch
of blood pulling on the floor.
And he realizes that Nika rippedoff one of the spokes of her
wheelchair and slit her wristsout of guilt. She's dying and
(50:40):
everything. She wakes up thenext day, and her arm is sewn up
very badly. The pool of bloodChucky has written Not so fast.
So she, she, you know, wakes tothis and then starts hearing
screaming down the hall. So sherushes her way down there and
(51:03):
sees that Chucky had slit one ofthe other patients risks with
the wheelchair wire and killedher instead. So the rest of the
movie now is her trying to provethat one of these Chucky dolls
in the insane song is actuallyChucky. That's ridiculous
because everybody knows thecafe. And we all know it can't
(51:24):
be because Chucky is just thehead. It is safe in Andy's
house. But Andy then hears ofthe murders in the Institute,
and he's like, Wait a second, this is starting to sound
familiar. He knows he's beenfollowing the trail of Chucky
knows that Nika is in thisplace. And he smells a rat. He
grabs another Chucky doll thathe's had. And he's given like
(51:47):
this military buzz cut to, Ithink only so that we can
recognize what Chucky dies. Andhe drives to the institution. On
the way there he receives a callfrom Tiffany, who is Jennifer
Tilly, who is taunting him. Andshe also then says that, you
(52:10):
know, she's there with the cultof Chucky, and that there are
three of them in this cult. Dr.
Foley brings Nika into hisoffice and he starts I guess
what is a typical hypnosissession with her. And we find
out that it is typical. And onceshe's hypnotized, it becomes
clear that he's done this beforeand uses these opportunities to
(52:32):
brainwash and rape her. Sothat's pleasant, while she's in
a wheelchair. And he'sbrainwashing her and telling her
that she is responsible for thedeaths of the the two girls so
far in the institute who havebeen killed by Chucky. So he
starts making out with her asshe's hypnotized. And from
(52:54):
behind, comes a Chucky andsmashes a bottle over the head.
And as he's like there, Chuckyadmits that he doesn't know
whether to kill Dr. Foley orcommend him for being so
twisted. And heetch then checkhe tries to convince Nika to
kill Dr. Foley, but she doesn'tshe refuses. When she finally
(53:14):
comes out of the hypnosis. Dr.
Foley claims that she attackedhim. So as the film was going
on, we have all these multiplecheck is going on, and they're
all pointing at one or anotherto be possessed by the original
serial killer Brad Dorischaracter, the Charlie Lee Ray.
(53:36):
Andy, who was trying to get into have a talk with Nika and try
to figure out what's going on.
He gets to the door and the theattendance like I'm not letting
you in here at all, you know, you're not on a list you know,
patient nothing and and so Andyattacks a guy and gets himself
committed.
Oh great,so that he can be in this place
(53:57):
with a very go. He's also gotthat buzz cut Jackie that we
know right? The the hair the badhaircut, Jackie. At one point,
Chucky finally explains that hehas learned a new Voodoo spell
that allows him to split hissoul across multiple bodies.
Chucky explains that he hassuccessfully possessed Alice
(54:17):
which is one of the dead girlsand went on a killing spree in
her body. One of the victimsfought back and killed Alice. So
that forced him back into thedoll. Those two tchotchkes then
bring the third buzzcut Chuckyto life with a new version of
Red Dwarf and three of them killan orderly that had accidentally
(54:40):
walked in on them. Meanwhile,Tiffany has pulled up outside
the institution where she slitsa guards throat because she's
hot and distracting. And we seethat she has the Tiffany doll
from one of the movies in thebackseat of her car. So at some
point one of the cecchisuccessfully possesses Nika, and
(55:03):
she she gets out of herwheelchair, and she stops Dr.
Foley's head in with her highheels, very satisfying. But Andy
rips open the stomach of theChucky that he had smuggled in
that Chuck, he didn't realizethat inside his own stomach was
a gun. Oh my god. And so heturns around and he sees that
(55:26):
Nika, possessed by Chucky isstanding in the doorway, and she
starts taunting him saying hedoesn't have the guts to
sacrifice Nika to kill him, andhe immediately pulls the trigger
on the gun, however, it's out ofbullets. So he, he does have the
guests which I love. I mean, hedoesn't think twice he just
(55:47):
starts shooting and but but hehas no bullets. So Mika beats
him up, locks him into a paddedcell basically. And then throws
in the bloody Chucky doll corpsein there with him. And we are
left to assume that the policewill pin all of this on. Andy is
he's the only one left alive andhas a gun and a bloody Chucky
(56:11):
doll corpse. So Nico walksoutside up to Tiffany Jennifer
tillys car it's so weird becauseshe's actually playing herself
and the to start to make outbecause Nico has of course
possessed by Jackie and JenniferTilly is possessed by Tiffany.
And so they start making out.
(56:34):
They get into the car and startcracking up. And the Tiffany
doll behind them also startscracking up. Oh my god, which
we're then led to believe thatTiffany somehow is also split
her soul between the doll andJennifer Tilly and let them
drive off into the night as thepolice arrived. This has been
the last movie so far. I'venever wanted a sequel to a movie
(56:58):
as bad as I want one to thismovie. This was just a blast to
watch. A couple of funny thingshere, for remember that Brad
Dora was in One Flew Over theCuckoo's Nest. After talking to
one of the patients, Chuck hecalls the asylum of Cuckoo's
Nest, which I thought was funnyand obvious. When Nika first
(57:21):
meets one of the guys at themental hospital she changed him
a stick of Juicy Fruit chewinggum for a cigarette, and when he
begins to chew, he says, juicyfruit, which is an obvious
reference to the scene and OneFlew Over the Cuckoo's Nest when
Murphy gives a stick of juicyfruit to Chief and he says the
same line. Chucky compares oneof the other Chucky dolls to
(57:42):
Hannibal Lecter, adding can'tbelieve they canceled that show.
Writer Director dominancy wrotetwo episodes of the ending when
Nico becomes possessed by thesoul of Charles Lee ray is
similar to the ending of thefinal story in the 1975 made for
TV film trilogy of terror wherethe main female protagonist
(58:04):
becomes possessed by the spiritof the Zuni doll. And I think
that almost all of these movieskind of owe a debt to pray from
trilogy of terror. And then, soget this this is some crazy
timeline. This movie wasreleased 29 years after the
original childsplay just 27years after Child's Play to 26
(58:26):
years after Child's Play 319years after bride of Chucky 13
years after seed of Chucky andfour years after Curse of
Chucky. So this is a series asit went on started really
spreading itself out in likefour years, five years between
sequels stuff like that. Boy, Iloved this movie. It's super low
(58:50):
budget and that whole 2.2million box office. I don't know
exactly how they did thisbecause I don't know if you
remember this was releaseddirectly to Netflix. Yeah. So it
had some kind of mini theatricalrun that that did fairly well
for me. It's pretty good.
Yeah, I like the cult of Chucky.
Oh, cool.
(59:11):
I liked it a little list but i ii really liked What's his name?
Alan the the lead guy comingback. Yeah. And he played I
thought that was great. I lovethe idea. It was one of those
that I I'll go back and Iprobably gonna watch it more.
Because I lost it up watched iton the tail end of everybody
(59:31):
saying this is like the greatestChucky movie ever made. It's so
much better than the last three.
Like I watched good. Oh, cuz Ireally like bright, bright
bright. It's my favorite by far.
I like oh no, it's better thanthat. But I can guarantee you
it's what I like more when Iwatch it again.
I have to say that I think Ifelt the same way the first time
(59:53):
I watched it and watching itthis time. I have just really
gained an appreciation for it.
sequel that tries to dosomething different.
Yeah, definitely.
I wonder why on earth theyremade this movie. Because if
they have like such a longstanding cult favorite standing
(01:00:14):
with their fans like why breakthat mold and try to make it
slightly crappier just formoney?
Yes, because that way they canpop it back into the theater.
big bank is truckies quite aways away from having very
successful theatrical rights. SoI heard was pretty decent
(01:00:36):
remake. Ihaven't seen it's not good. I
don't think so either. Yeah, Ididn't find that.
Audrey Plaza is not old enoughto be that kid's mom. It's very
weird. Like, Ithink they made a mention or
something. She was like young.
Yeah, it was 15 or somethinglike that. It's a throwaway
line. And I was like, it's finewith that. It just she just was
(01:00:56):
badly cast. Yeah, exactly. I think she was badly
cast.
Well, we'll go much, much, muchfurther back. Now. Kelly's one
of Kelly's favorite areas ofmoviemaking, 1970. twos, all the
colors of the dark.
The unexpected.
(01:02:11):
I've heard of this movie andnever seen it.
It's a it's a separate one I ownso I can own that too. But it's
also available right now inprime. Oh, perfect. A lot of
severan stuff after they're outfor they do in and out. They'll
put stuff in and out on theironline level areas. So this was
I could not find anything on thebudget. There's no listing for
(01:02:33):
it on Rotten Tomatoes. I mean,it doesn't even list I even
tried to look it up in itsoriginal Italian name and it
doesn't just doesn't show up atall. So who knows? The box
office however. 294,470,000lira. Yeah.
Yeah. $184,000.
(01:02:54):
So it's a decently successfulItalian in Italy. That's just in
Italy, directed by SergioMartino, who you probably might
not know from after the Condor.
Maybe after the fall of NewYork, a man called blade and 66
other films he directed.
Wow. So that's a workingdirector. Yeah.
(01:03:18):
He was credited a story for thisone. He was also story for rest
in pieces and under siege. No,no, no. Not that one. But for
movies in 70 in 19 7010 moviesin 1976 10 movies
(01:03:39):
in the year 1976. a rowboy with 60 writing credits
ever felt like a slacker so muchas the other writer was Ernesto
gastaldi, who wrote a hands ofsteel and once upon a time in
America, uncredited lay mantorso. And I'm just going to
(01:04:00):
list a bunch of really funnybecause I love some Italian
names. Your vice has a lockedroom and only I have the key.
The Forbidden photos of a ladyabove suspicion. Oh my god,
another writer scenario, scuffleami, the cynic the rat in the
fist. Anna, the pleasure, thetorment. And the final writer is
(01:04:20):
Louis canali, who wrote theEnglish version of the film or
translator whenever but he did.
Argo man the fantastic Superman.
I did that. Yes, yeah.
Stars George Hilton, who was inthe masked man against the

pirates. Satan's here. praiseyour pistol for a coffin.
Jesus,but also starring Edward Fitch,
who was in one I won a five starchallenge movie that I had from
Tony strip nude for your killer.
The inconsolable. widowinconsolable widow. Thanks all
(01:05:03):
those who consoled her.
Wow, that's the title. I mean, Idon't feel like you need to see
the movie now.
That's right. Yes. And hostelpark to see them and finally
Ivan rasm off who was in don'twait Django shoot. And if you
(01:05:24):
want to live shoot a sequel. Andvengeance is a dish best served
cold. But you know All Star Trekfans will recognize this
important line. Absolutely. Sothe idea of this film, women
recovering from a car accidentwhen she lost her unborn child,
(01:05:44):
and besides herself, followed bya coven trying to capture the
movie starts off off the batwith a WTF kind of start with a
naked woman in stirrups. A womanolder woman dressed up as a doll
and a woman on a bed. The womanon the bed is the lead so she
(01:06:05):
stays there the rest just sortof die and never come back. So
it's kind of implied it's adream, which I'm just gonna go
with. The boyfriend in the movieis a combination of really
supportive and a completeasshole. So he makes for some
interesting moments. I'm stillnot totally convinced if he's a
(01:06:26):
boyfriend or husband eitherwear their rings.
Yeah, I don't remember. I wantedher there. She he recommend she
sees a psychologist and he is ofcourse a 1970s psychologists
which means particularly intensethe shot of them of him talking
to her is very weird becauseshe's they're both facing
forward. And she's he's in anover the shoulder behind her
(01:06:49):
kind of giving her this intensestare while she talks. She keeps
running into in her dreams andher real life she keeps running
into this guy with freakishlyBlue Blue Eyes kind of make
foster look but their contacts, definitely contacts because for
some reason the first time theydo a shot of the guy is zooms in
super super close up and you cansee the original cutter in 4k.
(01:07:13):
You goa solicitor as they're called in
Europe, the lawyer calls her updemanding to see her for the
next day. And as random as mesaying this at that point is how
random it was in the movie. waswhat the hell is this guy? What
does he want? And you don't findout again for probably 40 plus
minutes. Oh, I remember him.
(01:07:35):
He wanted to meet up. There yougo.
For some reason she's makingbacon and eggs for her husband
for dinner. burns the shit outof them. And while she's airing
the pan outside of the window, she sees the blue eyed man. So
she goes running down to thehall to try to confront her and
runs into her husband boyfriend.
Holy shit. This is a coollooking scene, the way it's
(01:07:56):
shot, the stairwell that it hasone of those elevators in the
middle of the stairwell wherethe stairs are going around
outside and it just looks socool. And she gets down there.
Oh, wrong blue eyed man. I feellike I'm 30 minutes in or so and
I don't know what is going on tothis hill. But it looks cool and
it moves at a cracker pays forthe kind of film it is just
(01:08:20):
crackerjack movement. She findsa friend blonde lady, I don't
know how they met. Turns tellher what's going on. And the
blonde lady says hey, I can fixthat for you I've got to do is
take part in the satanic ritualwith me. And she immediately
goes, sounds good blindly. It'slike, you should think about it
a little bit. She's like, No,no, let's go. She really wants
(01:08:42):
these dreams gone. Blue Eyed guyshows up again attacking her
this time. And Damn it What iswith it? You know, the worst
part about watching 70s Italianmovies. Is there another cute
little dog and taken out in aritual? It's not terribly
violent, but the dog is horriblyadorable. It's like stop it. And
you know, so there's the ritualkilling of the dog falling by
(01:09:06):
the ritual sex, sexual assault.
And how No, it didn't take sothe blue guy is still shopping.
She gets home and finds asatanic ritual book on her
husband's boyfriend's desk. Ishe involved? I still not
entirelyThat's for you to decide. Right?
(01:09:29):
And so she goes back for anotherritual and finds out in order to
actually be cleanse she has tokill the blonde woman that
brought her into the cult.
Does the blonde girl know this?
Yes.
Yes. Commitment vehicle.
Yes. Right. And just so shekills the blonde girl and get
sexually sexually assaultedagain.
(01:09:50):
Awesome.
And now it seems like the blueeyed guy might be helping her.
Huh? This is because she's partof the cult probably She now
seems like she's free. But thenshe figures out if she ever
wants to leave the cult. Well, she now knows how she gets to
leave.
Oh, just has to recruitsomebody.
That's right. And we're not herebecause the husband boyfriend
(01:10:15):
goes someplace and leaves a notefor her, which is on a mirror on
the wall written and lipstickMike. What the hell leaves adult
like that that says I'll see youtonight.
Jesus heart XXI.
But now she noticed she has atattoo of the cult symbol has
grown on her arm. And I tell youall through this whole movie,
(01:10:37):
this symbol looks like crap. Itis such a poorly drawn symbol,
but it's consistent. So thehouse that the Colt lives in is
frigging gorgeous, huge giant.
But then she goes from room toroom and finds like this weird
room with two dead people in itthat look like they're having
dinner. And violence ensues.
(01:10:59):
It's very bizarre. And I'll justwrap up by saying the last 20
minutes are pretty strange.
Okay, I'll tell you. This is anawesome movie.
It sounds insane. Also, thatcoal has a hell of a lot of fine
print. You really need to It'sworse than like activating an
iPhone. The Constitution inthat, like resurrect George
(01:11:24):
Washington to like get out ofthis coal?
Well, per usual in the yellowstyle sort of jello sort of
Satan thing. story and plotlinetend to be either really intense
or really sort of not thatimportant. This one definitely
leans towards the latter. Yes.
The plot, like very simple, it'sgot a lot of that breathy acting
(01:11:47):
but you also get Jasonespecially if it's a lead woman,
or how the person who dubbed itdoes sound like that. Right. So
it's done. Well, you can tell itwas shot in English. You know
when they like mouth the words, but it's definitely it's got a
really strong pace. I saidearlier, it moves at a really
good pay, especially for filmfrom 1970 to get familiar with
(01:12:07):
the movie The love which or atleast like the poster, the
images of it. Yes. Us. Thedirector, watch this movie and
said my lead needs to lookexactly like this woman. Oh,
interesting. I looked up theactress to see how much she
looked like the woman in this.
She doesn't too much. But in thelove which the way they did her
(01:12:30):
makeup and hair. She looks justlike her
weird. Say it makes sense.
Because it feels like they'restealing from that kind of, Oh,
yeah,yeah, definitely. Directors era.
Definitely. as well. It'sobvious that Rosemary's Baby has
already been out a lot ofinfluence and the apartment
she's in the way it moves.
(01:12:51):
There's even some of that. It'ssort of, you know, jala wheats,
a satanic club, but there's noblack clubs. One thing I like
about g Alo, that kind ofreminds me of film noir, in a
weird way. And that the bestpart for me of film noir is the
amazing language. They'reallowed to speak the way you can
talk in a film noir evennowadays, like with, well,
(01:13:12):
bricks, not that new. But brickis one of the more recent
versions, where it's just asinsanely over the top stylized
dialogue that you're just notallowed to do because it doesn't
seem realistic anymore. Jealouslike that to me to where there's
like, green neon in scenes thathas no, there's no reference for
(01:13:33):
where all this incredible greenNeon is suddenly coming from?
Well, it's usually in thelighting, but you just don't.
Unless somebody says Well, I'mdoing a an homage to a jello.
Nobody dares shoot this kind ofstuff on a larger budget
anymore. And it just looks socool. There is a commentary from
Kat Ellen Sure. Who's offauthor, the all the colors of
(01:13:57):
Sergio Martino, and I listenedto a little bit of it, but it's
definitely more talking aboutthe director. She's like, I'm
going to sell you on how coolthis director is. And I want to
sell you hard. And it's prettygood sales pitch. So I was like,
I want to go back and listen toa little bit more. And I
definitely want to see some moreof this guy's films, because
he's he did all kinds of films.
He didn't just do giallo he did.
(01:14:19):
practically any genre you canthink of. Wow. First, you know,
you do 66 Films you're goingacross.
Like No kidding. Tell me thiswill decide whether I watch this
film or not. Is there? Is itjust the culture do we do we
feel like there might besomething behind the cult? Is
there Satan? Or is this just abunch of wackos?
(01:14:42):
It's hard to say. Honestly. Imean, it's got a herd dream
segments add a unrealisticfeeling to it. I mean, not like
it's bad movie but fake realityto that. But there's not like
Satanism. to pop up and sayhowdy or anything like that,
right?
(01:15:02):
I just didn't know if there waslike something. Something
clearly unexplainable hashappened after this. I think so.
Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Okay, I'm in.
Go. Good topic choice, Vanessa.
I'm glad it worked out. Yeah, Iwas really excited to approach
this one. This one has so muchin it.
Well, I feel like this is alsosomething we can do it part two,
I think. Yeah, I think we haveto try out a list of
(01:15:26):
at least five films. I couldtalk about any of these movies
all right. I was afraid it wasgonna be three satanic cult type
Jesus Christ. But instead, youknow, only hit the bed on this
one.
(01:15:46):
And I'm not sure if it's a 10thThat's right. It's
hard to know it's right.
Definitely need to do Part Twoso I can so I can pitch you my
Halloween six hour I yeah, absolutely. I want to do like
Lord of illusions was one I wasliterally looking at Dawn's
talked in depth about that oneand I really liked that film.
Right. And we had spoken earlierabout one BR and what Yeah,
(01:16:07):
incredibly uncomfortable andrealistic seeming cult.
Have you seen that one? Yeah, Ihaven't. That's a good one.
Yeah, I've hadn't kept slippingpast it in my
queue. And for some reason, tonally reminds me a lot of the
invitation if that helps. Youwant to watch more?
Yeah, no, definitely. I mean, and I was gonna say like, I was
a little sad. I used theinvitation up before this one.
(01:16:30):
You still got to talk about yourmovie. What do you care?
I know. I know. Come on you.
I like things to be orderly. Ilike them to be under the right
banner.
Well, speaking of orderly thatmeans it's my turn. And I'm
gonna throw a curveball at youguys this time. I want you to
exercise your second amendmentright on film. All action, all
(01:16:56):
guns. I'm excited about guns, but I'm excited about the action
part.
Yeah, I forgot to have guns. Idon't want no kung fu movie in
here.
And I enjoy a gun movie but notendorse anyone ever using
words or fantasy? Way too manypeople take movies way too. God
(01:17:16):
damn seriously is a fantasy.
Yes. We're not Rambo. Pleasedon't just let me tell you go
into if you're gonna own a gun, maybe learn how to use it ever
and how to do it safely.
I'll take that underconsideration. Okay, so that's
what we're doing next week. Asusual. Many thanks to everybody
(01:17:39):
anybody we need to throw aspecial thanks out to besides
all the regular video, consularofficers.
