somewhere between science andsuperstition to show you

(00:28):
Strange Aeons welcome to StrangeAeons radio which is available
on spotify apple amazon alexa iheard and every other pod
catcher in the known universethat's eric over there hello
that's finesse over there goodday hey guys
i am going to well i just wantto talk about this whole cult of

(00:52):
snyder thing that has popped upnow the justice league oh yeah
uncut so we've all seen it nowright yeah empowering the right
culture andand look i didn't hate the movie
i didn't love the movie but ithere was something that i saw
posted that i just have to bringup and get your guys thoughts on

(01:12):
so this idiot writesokay real talk the snider cut
was actually amazing yeah it waslong yeah the last time scenes
runthere were a few moments have
been trimmed but i understoodblah blah blah vanessa did you
write this and may remind youyou're under oath

(01:35):
i did i did in factlove this movie okay well okay
here cording to this post i canread the whole thing i know i
know and it's pretty long it'spretty long well okay i i don't
know if i love this movie but incomparison to the other justice
league movie i saw i loved thismovie and i can't on if i saw

(01:56):
this version as the firstversion of justice league i ever
saw i don't know how my feelingswould sway but right now i'm
like this is a fucking awesomefilm yeah you didn't note in
your diatribe here that this wascompared to the 2017 version in
fact you say quote actuallyamazing you don't then say

(02:20):
compared to the other no youknow what sometimes time helps
us see our emotions a littlemore clearly and um look i
really liked it a lot and therewere things in there that i just
loved like moments and welllet's let's put a little spoiler
warning out here and let's dojustice league for five minutes

(02:44):
i think i can help this a littlebit too because upon whoa i've
got avery breezy day we're watching
the the sighting on my roof flyaround
smack into the window but i uponwatching snyder's because i saw
your posts and i saw yourcomments i'm cat damn i'm gonna

(03:04):
watch this damn thingand so for four days i think
upon watching it i realized ihad not seen the other version i
did not see josh so oh so i willwatch it or you do not know it's
not a good movie it's not worthwatch i think it's great to
watch as an editor watch itbecause comparing the two it's

(03:25):
fucking mind blowing the waythey use the same content in
completely different contexts isfascinating i'm like you didn't
even use the same goddamn shotsfrom the same scene like it's
different shots you went throughand got other ones well let's
keep in mind this is not this isstill not the snyder cut this is

(03:46):
the snyder do over after he gotto see all of the bullshit the
joss whedon got this is not tofit the footage that he shot and
turned into warner brothers wasa two hour and 30 minute film
that they did not like so thisis not the snyder cut well this
is them giving him $70 millionmore to reshoot a ton of add

(04:07):
effects to it so this is a doover and he didn't have to see
the movie to hear all of theshit that was being cost 100%
and he had actually sent otherpeople to the premiere like in
his place i mean becauseobviously like you pointed out
he was going through some crazyshit i don't know when he put
together his cut i don't know ifit was after the film came out i

(04:29):
don't know at what point he waslike yeah i've got a two and a
half hour film to push out thereyeah you're right it is a do
over and it's an opportunity forhim to do whatever the hell he
wants with no restraints and i'malmost entirely okay with that
except for the ending and that'swhere i think a big part of that

(04:52):
budget went was that becausethat joker stuff was completely
reshot that that was that wasall absolutely unnecessary,
completely unnecessary, and awaste of time. And we I was
like, this is fine if you wantto put it as like a weird web
content extra or if you want toput it as like something in the
next movie, but this movie itdoes not belong. Maybe maybe

(05:13):
even do it for the post creditone of those posts credits sure
where it disconnects a littlebit from the rest of the film.
Yeah, The Return of the Jedi wasgiven a run for its money with
the freaking endings on thisdamn movie. It was over. I
thought it was done. And it rananother 30 then 40 minutes. Now
return to return the Jedireturning the king. Oh, that

(05:35):
makes sense. So Oh, I hit onepoint where I had to stop saying
I've got about 40 minutes left,right. And I watched those 40
minutes and that end battle.
It's like, well, this iswrapping up like, oh, must be
really long credits. Now there'sstill 40 damn minutes of the
movie after it should haveended. Yeah, I'm trying to
remember where that moment wouldhave been. I mean, I, I didn't

(05:58):
mind it ending right before wesaw the first Lex Luthor T's and
then the second Lex Luthor T'sand then the Martian T's, and
then the Joker. And I was like,um, guys, I don't mind the
Martian one because it's justfunny. And it's helpful because
it gives us more informationabout the previous two films

(06:19):
that we did not have before.
That's great. It ties thingstogether. But like he was he was
a weird, if you're going toinclude him at all. Especially
you can include him in thatearlier scene for seemingly no
real reason other than, well,I'm going to instigate this but
then I'm just going to go away.
I mean, he's an crediblypowerful character in DC

(06:41):
Universe, and he knew whatsupposedly seemed to know what
was going to go on, and why sheneeded to go to work. It's like,
why don't you go fight withthem? Yeah, at the end, when he
shows up at Batman's house, it'dbe like, Oh, thanks a powerful
dude. By the way, where were youwhen we could have used you it
would have been great if they'dhad that be the first time we
saw him instead of like, haha, Iwas not Martha Kent. was not

(07:04):
Martha Can I was Martha Kentthat also threw me off in the
later scenes with Lois amarth. Ikept waiting for her to say
something.
That's a problem that yeah, that's his problem in filmmaking
when you're pulling thepersonnel. I had just tons of
problems with this. One of thethings you pointed out in your
novel lengthwas that the character

(07:26):
development was so strong, please tell me the fucking
character develop. Okay, becauseZack Snyder's doesn't know how
to write character arcs, becausehe doesn't know how to write
character flaws. There's nobodyflawed in this movie, unless
it's that they're too cool. Orthey're too powerful.
His writing got retarded at theage of about 17. And it just

(07:49):
kind of stopped as a male 17year old writer, and so all of
his stuff is fuck yeah, this isI mean, I don't know, I would
disagree with that. Because Ifeel like Aqua man had a refusal
of the call. Like, I mean, tothe point where I was like,
yeah, obviously that Aqua manmovie comes after this because
he's straight up like, I don'twant to do this. I'm busy being

(08:11):
selfish and doing my own thing.
And it comes into play with hisown set of world. Well, I like
so toss out everything that cameout after Justice League
Because?
Because Zack did.
We see we see Willem Defoe inthis movie, but he clearly meets
with them to vote for the firsttime in Aqua man. Oh, okay. I

(08:32):
was like, Oh, he's he's throwingin characters. Thanks, I guess.
But he's not paying anyattention to the movies that
they were from. Okay. I mean, I,I don't disagree. I mean, Wonder
Woman 1984 doesn't make sensewith the original Justice League
version. Because in the originalJustice League version, she
never came out of hiding, right?
And in 1984. So the wholecontext already is kind of

(08:55):
fucked up between the individualfilms. I agree. It's it's very
strange. And it's only going toget weirder because everyone's
going in their own silos andmaking their own versions of
things like the new SuicideSquad and all kinds of stuff
that's coming out. So yes, you're right. But I would say
there are, there are things thatI appreciated a lot that did not
exist in the previous one, like, cyborgs backstory, I mean,

(09:17):
Cyborg is like, hiding awayashamed of himself and, like,
confused as to why he's evenalive, doesn't want to do
anything. We have the flash, whoalso has not yet figured out
what he wants to do with hislife. He just knows he needs a
job. But what he really wants todo is go into criminal justice
to save his father. That's allsetup. I just felt like I

(09:39):
understood the characters andwhy they were doing what they're
doing whether or not thosemotivations were good, whether
or not they were fleshed out ina way that made me identify with
them or really go through a bigemotional arc with them. Maybe
that's different, but anyemotional arc at all was so
pleasanti was like hey this person's

(10:00):
doing this thing for a reason atall oh my god even the bad guy
even steppenwolf has like amotive fuckin vacation he's like
i need to impress this guy i'mout of his favor i want to do
this thing because like i wantto get back in with him and i'm
a sad sad puppy like that'sgreat yeah i agree there's
definitely more stuff going inthere's two and a half hours

(10:24):
more stuff going ini would argue you could cut all
of the slow mo down and we couldget a two and a half hour movie
yeah that got lowest walkingthrough the rain in slow motion
yes no fucking sense i don'tcare about lois lane

(10:45):
wonder woman saving all the kidsone that was a girl seeing that
i want us to slow mo continuingas she goes down the road to
save all the kids like fast ohslow again fast oh slow again
even slow come on and the wonderwoman theme song to get although
she showed up like quick did theother characters have those they

(11:08):
just weren't as prominent no theother characters were given
really interesting uniquemusical moments that that i was
like oh this is kind of strangeand this isn't my style but i
love that it's this musical liketheme is actually fitting with
this character and what they'regoing through that's really cool
that's really unique thatreminds me a lot of watchmen and
then wonder woman score come inand i'd be like why why are we

(11:30):
doing this again go back go backto the beginning even to the
point where at the very endingwhen she shows up to take the
final slide and then it seemslike you know he got a solid
scene going here yeah breakingit up with that weird music beat
was just like no just keep themusic you got go and go on and
whatever just fine one thing ido want to say though is as much

(11:53):
as we might not love that it'sfour hours or whatever i don't
think that's fair to be upsetabout in this day and age like
we sit through i like the way iwatched it you mean
i mean there's six parts why notyeah that's how you should
that's how you should watch imean like why would we complain

(12:14):
about that when we're willing tosit through you know how many
hours of 30 coins to get to youknow how many plot points like
there we're willing to sit inthis day and age through all
kinds of weird broken up conwe're willing to sit through
mandalorian which has you knowsometimes it's 25 minutes and
sometimes it's 45 minutes andlike if we're willing to chill

(12:36):
out about that i don't thinkit's fair to be like super
pissed about something that'sstreaming that's where i'm not
super pissed it's clearly a imean first of all this is a
gigantic kit for hbo max and iliterally don't know how they
make their money let's give thefans what they want and if you
want this we got tons of it forme i do look at it as a failing

(12:57):
and it's like okay we know howlong a movie should be and it
took you twice as long to tellthis story there's a lot of
fluff in thisthere is a lot of there's a lot
of there's at least two or threegiant battles with steppenwolf
where i'm like well you knowhe's gonna win so why is this 20
minutes longeveryone everyone talking about

(13:19):
how cool steppenwolf looks nowi'm like boy he looks like a
cartoon he doesn't look like hefits into the world to me the
scene where the three motherboxes and you know the the
atlanteans and the race of menand the dwarves and the elves
each fight the dark side and hisguys

(13:42):
that whole thing looked like acomputer or video game scene in
a video yeah i was like shockedat how that look yeah i did
notice there was a disparity inthe cgi i liked i liked
steppenwolf because in the lastone i remember thinking he just
looked like some loser human guyand like i was not at all

(14:03):
impressed with him but in thisone i loved that the armor was
so i mean i think that's where alot of the budget went was his
fucking armor because it was soreactive and moving and that
they spent a lot more time onthan that big opening battle
well i didn't really care aboutthe opening battle because i was
like oh flashback i didn't careabout it either could have been

(14:24):
tossedthe effects in the amazonian
battle when they're on thehorses are damn near anything
awkward man did underwater rightwas just like it wasn't as good
within you but then like when wewent to the opening bit with the
amazonians where the cliff sidecaved in and like they're like
shooting and fighting in therethat looked fucking phenomenal
so it made no sense are theyjust poised with arrows ready

(14:48):
pointing at that box yes eighthours a day no it's because it
had a crack in it becausesuperman screen because he was
dying yeah got it youBecause he was dying, so the
boxes understood he was gone andstarted to wake up. So the boxes
have been here forever, though, right? Why didn't they wake up
before Superman arrived? Oh,that's a great question. I don't

(15:10):
maybe there's a creek becausethere's a Green Lantern in that
big battle. Because he saidSteppenwolf said there's no
ladders to know when to find it.
Yeah, so this maybe you'reright, maybe. I mean, so the
places where the the slomoworked for me was in that Wonder
Woman scene actually, when thebullets go by her and she see
and I thought it made sense, because it shows that she

(15:33):
operates on a level like flashdoes. Or you know, I think my
favorite scene still from bothmovies is flash coming around
Superman after he's beenawakened. And it's in the slow
mo stuff. And we see Superman'sI move and notice, and it's such
a great shot. So I was happyabout that. The one thing

(15:53):
though, out of that battlescene, the the line do bleed is
not in there, which tied it backto the whole PVS. And that
stuff, and I thought was areally neat moment in the
original film. Yeah, there wasdefinitely a lot of reworking.
And I think I get a big part ofwhy I feel like the original

(16:16):
Justice League was all aboutSuperman. It was Superman, the
movie was Superman, part three,or whatever, or for whatever the
hell they're at. This movie wasJustice League. So a lot of that
stuff that was Superman centric, got reworked. And I think we
lost a couple of cool moments.
But I think we gained a lot moreabout the other characters,

(16:36):
which is it to the point wherelike, did you know flash was
like, a big part of the endingbattle because all I remembered
from the other Justice Leaguewas that he like saved some
like, kind of Soviet Unionfamily at one point with a bad
joke. And this time, I was like,Oh my god, he frickin rewound
time. Everybody put something inthat didn't have a problem for

(17:00):
me, actually, because we'vetalked about this before the
problem of flashes, he solvedyour problem. You just go
faster. Oh, the whole world'sgonna destroy. I'll just rewind
time. Well, how about you goback and rewind time and save
Superman so he doesn't die? Hedoesn't scream. None of the
boxes crack open. I didn't know.
Save your mother. Yeah. Andthere's a which the TV show

(17:23):
actually explores really well.
But that's DC. I mean, I wasgoing to add a new I thought it
was a cool battle I that didn'tpull me out like the first half
of the Wonder Woman battle Ithought was great. Yes. rescuing
the guys who's just that and Iwould love to have seen that
slow motion stuff with thekillers transposed with how fast
she actually moved down thatline to save the kids. right but
that in full speed. Becauseyou've done all the slow motion

(17:46):
we get it. She's fast. Let's seeher be fast. Oh, I thought we
did. I thought we saw herbecause I thought it looked a
little silly. Yeah, I did.
Because it was fast, slow, fast, slow, fast, slow.
And the way they showed flashmoving fast and ever
increasingly slower motion issomething I get it.

(18:08):
Although I will say him twistingon his feet and his sneakers
exploding. That wasthere was a lot of stuff to like
in this movie. I just don'tthink it's a great movie. And I
and this weird Snider cut thatis a Snyder Colt that has
evolved out of this. It's justlike, what is going on this guy?
A lot of people hate it Batman vSuperman. I was like wait, now

(18:32):
I'm seeing them retro activelytalk about how great it was? The
one who likes it. The Ron canveto score for both of the
Snyder DC movies, which nobodyhad good things to say about her
suddenly climbing interest thatis interesting. I didn't realize
that because I remember watchingBatman vs. Superman, and being
the only one who liked it. Andthe only reason I liked it is

(18:54):
because I decided to stopwatching it as a movie. And
instead watch it as like ananimatic created comic. And I
was like, Oh, this is reallyneat. This works. Yeah. And all
the sudden all the cuts madesense to me. I was like yeah,
this looks like that fuckingscene and this fuckin scene. So
yeah, one other little thingthat bugged me with this one was
Superman's black uniform.

(19:18):
Because the whole film is aboutSuperman is our hope he is
what's going to bring us hopeagain. Why the fuck is he
showing up looking like Batman?
Let's have Superman not in theChristopher Reeve
read because that would havebeen too much. Yeah, but even
just the muted blues and reds hewould have been such a wonderful
contrast and the everything elsewas so that was definitely a

(19:41):
Snyder it looks Oh yeah.
I think that was a nod to theblack suit from Delta Superman.
I didn't want it because I justfigured it was some nerd thing.
I didn't know. Yeah.
I know exactly what it was. Ijust did. I never really liked
the Superman, black outfit forthat exact reason.
To me, Batman is the dark, brooding DC character.

(20:05):
Superman's the hope for thefuture, and the hope for the
world character. So turning himinto whenever they tried to turn
him dark when they added longhair or gave them weird facial
hairs. I was like, Yeah, I thinkit's a reason none of those
things stuck. And I wanted himto be that hope in the in the
story. Well, at least in thisone. He didn't come back in the

(20:27):
first like, third or whateverthe fuck yeah, he
returned. Yeah, they actuallybuilt up his fucking return.
Last time. I was like, I don'tknow why we're in this ship. I
don't know what we're doing. Idon't know why you have to do
anything. What Why is he back?
What are we doing now? Like, Iwas so grateful that it had any
meaning whatsoever. So just askind of a return to my original
post Kelly. me to read more ofit? No, no.

(20:54):
I do have to absolutely copy onit, at least for your sanity.
And for my own justification andjust say, I don't know whether
or not I love this movie on itsown as a piece I have. I can't I
can't say in the context thatI'm viewing it in. It's
impossible. It's in pop. All Iknow is compared to what I saw

(21:14):
before. Almost every moment wasa joy filled expression of
there's a reason. Ah, fairenough. I didn't have that
problem. Because like I said, watch it. I was just watching
based on the quality of thisfilm itself. Yeah. I'm glad to
have that perspective. It'sfine. It's it's the same thing.

(21:35):
We've said it a few times a fewdifferent ways. It's the same
problem that DC has that Marvelis absolutely solved. Marvel's
planning for their future filmsis so ballsy and so unbelievably
well educated or well executed.
They took what 10 movies to getto the end of the Avengers
storyline.

(21:57):
It's like 1015 years or more ofplanning ahead. And DC still
feels like they're slipshod.
Well, let's get into this. Let'stry to create
a grid I'm kind of a thing butand then they kind of drop it.
Yeah, instead of doingindividual movies and move on.
Yeah, it felt like this wasseveral movies pushed into one

(22:20):
space. And DC has always beenreactionary. You know, they
decided they had to do justiceleague because Avengers was
coming out. But they are nowreactionary to their own movies.
If something does well, thenthey just they change their
entire plan going forward. Andit's like, you know, you guys
come up with a game plan andstick with it. The Snyder DC

(22:42):
Universe is very dark andbrooding so you're sure you're
going to get that kind ofSuperman because that's all he
thinks is cool, right? Right. Imean, that's actually why I kind
of that was the only thing Ireally liked about the first
Superman that he did. I waslike, oh, a dark version. I've
never seen this portrayed forme. So I was okay with it. He

(23:03):
was pretty dark in the Supermanmovies. I you know, I blow on
the shit out of entire I need tostuff I need to check that shit
out. Like I need to I need tosit down and do that because
like yeah, I'm I'm not theperson who should be talking
about this actually, because Ihave no knowledge.
I guess instead of tying it moreinto was it death? Is the guy

(23:24):
that Castro Castro. Oh, you meankilled Superman originally?
Well, death flux on onthat keep wanting to say Doom?
Yeah. But anyway, so instead ofmy first thought, I guess
instead of that was I went tothe kingdom come series, where
his rebirth in that comic isphenomenal. There aren't a lot
of times you're reading througha comic book and you get chills.

(23:46):
But his refuse to call and thengo into action moments in that
comic are so astounding. And Iwas like, that's what more what
I was thinking of, I think thenthen getting destroyed by that
big giant chunk of rock thatsomehow they decided well, after
all his great villains, we'regoing to invent this dumb one

(24:06):
just so we can get killed.
Well, this entire opening has tobe a spoiler alert.
Yeah, we did start you juststart off by saying that you
should just cut into our picsnow. I agree. I don't think we
should worry about more content, guys. Why don't we take a break

(24:27):
then? And we'll come back andtalk pranks.

(29:43):
make an argument that this is afilm worth watching wow okay so
it's directed by cat shea shedid some really cool movies that
you may or may not have seenstripped to kill one and two
which which are kind ofexploitation films she was
working for roger cormanThat time, they're both very
good movies. She also did theoriginal poison ivy.

(30:05):
And she did that latest NancyDrew movie Nancy Drew in the
hidden staircase. Oh, yeah. Itwas written by rat Rafael Maru.
He wrote this, of course andhackers, and has. He's one of
these guys who has sold a ton ofscripts that never got made into
films. So he's he's like aworking writer. And if the

(30:26):
writer of hackers is having thatis one of the best written films
of all time.
It It stars, Emily, Emilyburgle. Who has I think I'm
pronouncing her last name br GL.
She's got 50 credits, includingmultiple episodes of Gilmore
Girls, huh? Yeah, she played afrancy Jarvis on the Gilmore
Girls. Okay, okay. Shameless, the marvelous Miss Mazal. It

(30:51):
also stars Jason London, who has128 credits. I know best from
dazed and confused, but he wasalso in to Wong Foo, and several
of the Aerosmith videos in the90s.
And also stars, Amy Irving, whowas in the fury and also played

(31:17):
to Seuss now in the originalCarrie. Oh, okay. She is playing
Seuss now in this film. Oh,whoa.
Yeah, it starts off we areintroduced to a young girl I
want to talk and like an eightyear old girl as her mom is
going quite insane. And she ispainting everything in the house
red with big huge paintbrush.

(31:39):
And she kind of starts attackingthe daughter and it feels very,
like religiously motivated andthen everything in the house
starts going crazy. The windowsare slamming open and shad
plates are flying across allthis stuff.
So then the cops show up andeverything kind of drops and
they take the mom away10 years later beautiful.

(32:04):
So it couldn't have been a yearold girls probably like six year
old girl because we reintroducedto Rachel in high school.
She's not like Carrie but she isour carry person in this film.
She is fairly attractive seemsto get along okay with people
and doesn't have the the anksthen the issues that Carrie had

(32:26):
not being teased and all thatstuff, but also,
I don't know about you guys, butI when I was in high school, I
wasn't really bullied that much.
But I probably was ignored morethan anything else. You know, I
was friends with jocks and I wasfriends with nerds and I was
friends with Goths and all thatstuff, but I don't know that
anyone you know, 30 years later, would if they said hey, you

(32:49):
remember Kellyanne, I don't knowif any of them will go. Kelly
young. Yeah, I think they'd allbe Who? Because I was just a
very nondescript person. Andthat's what Rachel is like.
Her best friend played by Menasuvari commits
suicide by leaping off the roof, the roof of the High School in

(33:13):
front of everybody. And Rachelsees this happen and she's and
she freaks out and basically isthe catalyst for her telekinetic
powers reemerging all thelockers inside the school
suddenly slam open andeverything falls out and all
this stuff. Soshe finds out and we find out
that her friend killed herselfbecause she found out that this

(33:36):
guy that she had slept with.
She was just part of a like asex game that he had all the
other football players did, which was they would sleep with
as many chicks as they could andand
make notes on who was the bestand give them a graded score,
stuff like that. And so youknow, really shitty stuff.

(33:57):
Sounds like my freshman year ofhigh school. Well, and when I
did a little research, I guessthis is based on a young girl
who did kill herself whensomething like this was
discovered. So yes, it's like, boy, kids are fucking worse.
This drama, like I said,triggers Rachel's repressed
telekinetic ability. And,as all this is happening, one,
one high school counselor sitsup from her desk, and she and

(34:20):
it's soo Snell from the originalCarrie, and she's just like, you
know, she's having a little bitof PTSD.
And Rachel goes and talks to theschool counselor, so and they're
there. She's just kind oftalking to her as a counselor to
a grief stricken young woman andeverything. She doesn't realize

(34:44):
that this is the girl who madeall that shit happen. But as
they talk, Rachel gets more andmore frustrated and everything
and a snow globe falls off theshelf. And so Sue is putting
things together, maybe quickerthan she should but unlike
Zach's Eithercache only had a scan at eight
minutes to tell her story, she'sgot to move this shit along. It

(35:05):
was a different time it right.
So that evening Rachel's dog, which is a adorable little
basset hound. It is hit by acar. And Jessie who is played by
Jason London, he is one of thefootball players, but he seems
to be like the nice one, and hedrives up and sees what's

(35:28):
happened. And he offers to helpbecause the dog is not dead. So
they scoop him up into his car,and they get him to the vet and
the dog is going to be okay.
And this gives him a chance tosit and take Rachel out for
coffee. And they have a littlebit of a talk and all this
stuff, you can see that there'ssome sparks flying all that
stuff. Jesse has recently brokenup with his girlfriend. So we

(35:52):
see there's a bunch of jealousythere, the girlfriend is very
unhappy that he's showinginterest in Rachel, all that
stuff. Sue, then makes ajudgment call basically pulls
Rachel aside and says, Hey, Ikind of know what you can do.
And Rachel Oh, Lord, you'retalking about and so she takes
her to the burned out shell ofher old high school. Wow, still

(36:17):
standing. Yeah. And, and tellsher what went on there. And you
know, Carrie White was a personwho had these immense powers
and, you know, couldn't controlthem. And and if Rachel indeed
has these powers that she needsto learn how to control them all
that if you get dipalma, flashbacks for that. Yes. Wow.

(36:39):
And in my notes, I will talk alittle bit about that.
So Jessie, and Rachel, theyactually start dating, which
pisses off the other footballplayers and his ex and that
group then begin to conspire onhow to No, no, yes. Oh, now
they've got a, they've got agood prank in mind. I bet it's
very unique.

(37:00):
This is one of the things thatcracks me up in these movies.
This is a trope that I feellike, has finally gone away. But
the football players areteasing. Jason Linda's
character, Jessie, because he'sdating this attractive woman,
but she's, she's not quitequality. You know, her parents
are her step parents, adoptiveparents are our poor and all of

(37:23):
this stuff. So Eric, youremember what it was like when
you were in high school? Andthere was this hot chick
checking you out and yourfriends pulled you aside? You
know, probably probably Jamieand said, Hey, man, have you
checked your FICO score? I don'tknow. I don't have that. Yeah.
So let's just put that thingaway. I'm sorry. This guy's will
date anybody? Yeah, sure. YourHigh School? Exactly.

(37:50):
You're already in the samegroup? Because you're in the
same high school. Yeah. Also, asa side note, isn't it funny how
many people meet the love oftheir lives? And just happens to
be the person who goes to schoolwith them? Oh, yeah, absolutely.
I mean, my school had like, 100people in our class. Yeah. So I
mean, that's like, what 50 dude,so you get the option. Did you

(38:12):
meet the love of your lifethere? Uh, no, I met him at
another high school and then webroke up after high school. Oh,
my story. You know why? I'm justtrying to be open and like, make
this friendship thing real.
Okay.
Try and so Jessie and Rachelthey go off and they have a

(38:34):
romantic night in this cabinthat one of their friends
families owned and the friendsaid, Oh, yeah, you guys can go
here but what they don't know isthat the football players are
filming them have sex shows hisher virginity and the jocks film
at all.
But then they all start to kindof hang out together. And she is

(38:54):
accepted by the jocks and allthis stuff. And after one of the
games, while Jesse is detainedby his ex is trying to come on
to him. And he's like, notinterested.
Rachel is taken to a big partywith all the other people and
all this stuff. And she's havinga good time. And she thinks that
everybody likes them all thisstuff. And then on the big huge

(39:15):
screen there in the house. Theyshow her losing her virginity.
In front of everybody, this is abig party. There's 100 people at
this party. It's just like, these people know how to throw a
party or you know, they didn'twant to do the prom again.
Right? I mean, I figured fromthe cover that maybe they would
do it again but now.

(39:37):
Well, she goes full carry andstarts killing everybody
including Sue Snell, who hasgotten wind of this prank and is
going to try and stop it becauseshe fears what might happen and
it does happen. She gets thereas the places starting to burn
and all this and she's she's,she's trying to open the front

(39:57):
door and there's a jock on theother side. Also trying
milborne front door and Rachelsends a fireplace poker flying
through the air. It slamsthrough the back of the head of
the jock through the doorthrough the front of the head of
Seuss now, and then the doorslowly creaks open with both of
them just hanging on.
I was like, You know what, Ilike that shot.

(40:20):
There's also this movie is notserved by the makeup effect that
they decided to put on Rachel, when she starts losing it, she
gets kind of this line ofinfection that starts running
down from her forehead down theside of her face and everything.
And it's, it's kind of a neatidea of, you know, just this
black line that seems to befollowing, you know, a blood

(40:42):
vein or something like that. Andit gets more and more prominent
as she gets angrier and angrier.
But now I don't know if this isjust because you can watch this
with you know, very high rezquality now, but you can clearly
see this is like a grease pencilline that they have put down her
forehead and everything. Andit's like, oh, this is a really
powder. Maya, come on. Yeah. SoI won't tell you how it ends,

(41:08):
but it has some really goodGore. Lots of good deaths. And I
mean, you kind of know how it'sgoing to end. It's basically the
carry story with the jumpscareending Even so, split screen, no
split screen. That might havebeen too much, I think. But I I

(41:28):
have to say as I was watchingthis, I was like, this is a dang
good movie. It didn't need to bemade. But it's not a bad movie
at all very well acted very welldirected. When I started do some
research, I realized why it wasa dang good movie. It was not
written as a carry sequel. Wow.

(41:50):
It was originally written as amovie called Say you're sorry,
which was kind of a carryknockoff. And the producers
bought it and decided to turn itinto a carry sequel added the
Susan l character and stuff likethat.
Amy Irving was then wary ofbeing in they approached her
doing this and so she askedBrian depalma if it was okay.

(42:13):
And he was like, Yeah, I mean,if you need the money, go ahead.
They must have had a fairlydecent relationship because
right after Carrie he put her inthe fury, which was another
telekinetic weirdo movie, but sothere's some kind of friendship
there. Rachel's nerdy friend isa guy named Arnie and is clearly
a nod to RNA from Christinebecause he acts and looks just

(42:35):
like him.
A little note here, the asylumthat Rachel's mom has put in
Arkham Asylum.
But of course, wow, how did theJoker and this was the final
film produced by Paul Monash whooriginally secured the rights to
carry the novel when no otherstudios would touch it. And he

(42:57):
was a cult name as a consultantbefore his death on the TV
adaptation of Carrie, which wasthe last thing he ever did. So
Carrie was a big deal in hislife. Yeah, so that's my movie.
The prank went wrong, but I havea feeling that that's probably
what's going to happen andeverybody's
here's your short film. I pulleda prank.

(43:20):
Coffee. We had a great time.
Thanks for keeping things light.
Um, yes. So you know what ithere are so many great options
for prank films. There are atleast three films that I wanted
to talk about at some point. Soit was just I had to just choose
one pranks one pranks two pranksthree. We can always keep this

(43:41):
going. I know actually. That'strue. That's good. I'm glad I
haven'tmess this. You used any of these
up? Yeah, I'm gonna save them.
So the one I went with is a filmthat I have mentioned before but
haven't gone into depth aboutand so it's really nice to be
able to spend a little more timewith it. And that is the 1980
movie. Terror train.

(44:33):
Terror drain.
Take off your day with your day.

(44:55):
I don't want to get backFor the students are bored, it's

(45:25):
going to be the one to end them.
So always walking out of myparties.
But this time you can't.

(45:49):
Magic last big college partythis one has a rotten tomatoes

(46:21):
of 36% for critics and 38% foraudience, which is harrowingly
low, considering how good thismovie is. They just didn't know
what was good then clearly, thebudget is 3.5 million box office
8 million. That alone shouldtell us that the Rotten Tomatoes

(46:43):
are on. Directed by RogerSpottiswoode, who, it's a weird
name, but that's okay. Formerporn director
former for sure if you've gotspots there.
He also directed the sixth dayfor eight hours Tomorrow Never

(47:04):
Dies and my personal favoritestop or my mom will shoot.
love that movie.
territorian was his first movie, and now he's actually doing a
lot more documentary andHallmark stuff. And I cannot
say, you know, like, it's bad tobe doing homework. There's so
much homework out there. It'sjust easy money square working

(47:25):
directors go to work. Yeah.
Yeah, absolutely. It was wherethe other editors who worked on
prospect were from. So thewriter for this is a guy named
Ty Drake. He only has like 10credits. And a lot of TV is kind
of what he's doing, includingMacGyver. He retired in 1990. So
he's been out of the game for alittle bit now. And then there

(47:46):
were two like uncreditedwriters. One who is a producer
did a lot of mostly TV stuff, soand also National Lampoon's
Christmas, starringJamie Lee Curtis. As Ilana, our
main character, everyone'swearing costumes and less so go
ahead and also say her costumeis a pirate. And she is known

(48:08):
for Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Theremake of Rudolph the Red Nosed
Reindeer and the Island ofMisfit Toys.
She gets started in New Girl andVeronica Mars, and that your
carry show? And she was thetelephone operator, slash curfew

(48:29):
announcer and Halloween three.
So hoping you'd bring that.
Yeah, that was a big role. I wassurprised. I was actually pretty
excited. I was like, Wow, shelanded a Halloween movie. That's
pretty cool.
Also, this is Hart Faulkner whoplays Doc, who's kind of the
second male lead. This guy. Helooks familiar, but it's almost

(48:55):
like why why do you lookfamiliar? He's very young. He's
been in 54 things includingplayed Arthur Reeves and Batman
mask of the Phantasm. He is inDie Hard as Ellis, which is
where I was like, Oh, that'sdefinitely how I know you. He
was in the 1984 Supergirl and 10episodes of the starter wife.

(49:15):
And then kind of an awesome rollthat we have in here. The train
conductors played by BenJohnson. Now he's been in 106
things he died in 1996. But he'sa cool dude. He was a stunt man
for john wayne, James Stewartand Gary Cooper initially, and

(49:35):
then one day john Ford kind ofnoticed him and pushed him into
more larger roles. He has beenin last picture show a Wild
Bunch getaway angels in theoutfield. Just incredible dude,
he has some of the best storiesand the kind of behind the
scenes notes. And then last butnot least, that it's an ensemble

(49:55):
cast. There's a lot of people inthis movie, but I do need to
point outdavid copperfield in this movie
he plays the magiciancommon name in this movie he's
been in eight roles the simpsonshe was in twice he was in seven
days in hell a tv movie crazyones incredible burt wonderstone

(50:17):
he was in scrubs one michaeljackson shorts and he also
directed the magic of davidcopperfield number five through
15 there's a lot of obviously hedidn't like whoever did one foot
through four so he had to takethat ship over plots so during

(50:41):
this kind of hazing it's youknow late 70s i guess there's a
sort of hazing fraternity partythat's going on a bunch of pre
med students are just drinkingaround a bonfire and they have a
particularly sinister prank forone of their more timid pledges
kenny with the help of kilkennynot to an extent but i

(51:07):
appreciate the nod with the helpof COVID ilana played by jamie
lee curtis they convinced thenerdy pledge a sexy student
wants him and is waiting for himand his fellow frat bro they
convinced this particularlynerdy pledge that is sexy
student wants him and is waitingfor him and his fellow fat frat
bro doc bed so he goes up therehe's really excited this other

(51:31):
girl is kind of standing up inthe hallway kind of going yeah
she's waiting for you go and goin and like alana's in there
kind of behind this headboardjust looking like really
uncomfortable with what's goingon but like they're all like
yeah it's gonna be fun he'sgonna love it do it do it and so
he goes in and he sees thisreally very sexy ad style bed

(51:53):
setup with the the kind of sheerfabric over the edges for poster
but i don't know what kind offrat bro dude's room this is but
it is very elaborate and there'sa woman in there beckoning and
from behind the bed we've got alot of kind of going i want you
kenny i want you he starts ondressing we see some spectacular

(52:16):
yellow underwear by the waysuper good i was like are those
whitey tighties no those are ayellow tidy those are amazing he
climbs into the bed and insteadof olana he discovers a
puppeteered corpse in the bedit's a bloated old woman she has
no arms she has an artificiallimb that he actually pulls out

(52:38):
of the socket he starts freakingout in screaming jumps up on the
bed and just starts running incircles gets tied up in that
beautiful shirt fabric andthe friends were watching horror
three years latertime has passed i wonder what

(53:00):
happened to him we're at anotherjoyous occasion all of the med
students that we saw previouslyare all now dressed up in
costumes they're waiting to geton this train and they're
basically doing this fungraduation party so they've all
been through you know threeyears of pre med hell they're
ready to go out in the world andthey're throwing this giant

(53:21):
elaborate costume party on thistrain eleanor and her boyfriend
moe who both participateparticipated in the pranks with
their best friend doc who reallywas behind all the shit is
putting this this great thingtogether it's elaborate they've
got a band they have a magicshow with the moody

(53:43):
perfectionist david copperfieldhe's like really taking himself
in this like party drain magicshow very seriously he has a
beautiful assistants there's acaboose that's just for the
seniors the humor behind this isactually really neat because
like the the adults that areinvolved in this film know how

(54:04):
crazy this is like the conductoris getting ready to get on the
train and he asks this womanwho's sort of running the
control room hey are you goingto be on this with us and she
goes haha no that's insane goodluck good time and he's like ah
and then you know the studentsare like offering him weed and
everything's very like nice andnatural feeling it's just it

(54:26):
feels like it's got a lot ofgood heart even though they just
traumatized a kid like secondsago three years ago
yes definitely three years agodefinitely three years ago no
one looks a day older but yeahum so of course everyone's
lining up to get on this trainand before it even takes off one
of the more annoying seniorsthis kid named ed who's non stop

(54:49):
pranking everybody like bad badsexist horrible jokes he's got
this little like altoidscontainer kind of thing and he's
likeWould you like some and opens it
up and he's got a hole with hislike finger in it. He's like
it's a finger.
Stupid, stupid stuff. He'swearing a David Copperfield saw

(55:12):
that I was likeI think he probably did that in
the movie itself. Actually, hewas probably like, Nope, sorry,
not good enough. Sothis kid, he ends up with a
sword through his chest and he'skind of stumbling around and
everyone's like, haha, good oneEd, get on the train, let him
stumble to the ground. And ofcourse, his head is placed very

(55:37):
carefully on the track. So asthe train begins to go, we know
that his fate has come and gone.
Do we get to see that?
Unfortunately, no, I waswatching very carefully. This
was my second viewing of it. AndI was like, do we see it? We do
not but it's still feelsincredibly tense. Yeah, I'm,
I've never seen this movie I'vetotally sold so far. Oh, I can't

(55:58):
wait to watch this. It's sogood. It's so good. Hold train
just bumps.
Now, like I said, this islike everything just gets
smaller, bumpy style.
Now, of course, everybody's incostume. So somebody's wearing
his full face costume, which issort of the car I'm trying

(56:22):
remember. It's a it's the faceof I think Groucho Marx or
something is walking around, andwe know that it's not him. In
fact, maybe it's somebody hereto get some kind of revenge.
Surely not Kenny thickly plottedslasher film.
But of course, the question is,what is Kenny look like? Because

(56:45):
we don't know it's been years hewent through this crazy trauma.
Even in the opening scenes, wedidn't get a really clear
picture of this. gonna say it'sonly been three years and nobody
looks any different. So it was aneat time, naturalistic lighting
shoots. So there's a lot ofcampfire and dim lighting in the
sexy bedroom scene. So you don'treally have a great concept with

(57:07):
this kid looks like now thekiller has a costume. He's
seeking revenge and seniors juststart disappearing. In fact, the
seniors that are disappearingare perhaps the ones who were
all involved in the hazing.
drange Meanwhile, there's allkinds of very silly other things
going on. The the girl olana isgoing back and forth with kind

(57:34):
of having some arguments withher boyfriend, her boyfriend's
best friend is that kid doc. Anddoc hates her for some reason or
another probably cuz she's astrong headed woman, it seems.
And so doc is trying to set uphis best friend aka her
boyfriend with this hot chickwho's wearing no shirt, but
pants that like are really bigand go up over the top of her,

(57:54):
like boobs. I don't know whatshe's dressed up as, and I
cannot figure it out. And it'sbothering me. But that's okay.
Of course, like his friendstarts to kind of fall for it,
and Alon is supposed to walk inon them. And therefore, you
know, Doc can then go off in thesunset with his bestie without
her there to impede things. Butshe gets pulled aside because

(58:17):
her best friends is murdered.
And the conductor is trying tokeep things under wraps because
he's not really sure quitewhat's going on. At this point.
He finds a dead body and abathroom. And so he kind of
locks it and goes to the back.
And he's he wants to try andcome up with a plan of action
with the other dudes who run thetrain. I don't know what they're

(58:39):
called train assistants.
And but by the time he getsback, there's nothing there.
There's no body all the Bloodscleaned up. And of course, the
costume is gone. So this personis changing from costume and
costume costume as he goesthrough the different people.
Which is great because it allowshim to get into interesting
situations. So with Alon hisbest friend, for example, he's

(59:01):
now in a lizard costume with aguy that the female bestie is
kind of interested in banging.
And so it gets her alone in abunk on the train, and has the
opportunity to strike. So Alonis pulled off because they find
this corpse really iteratingthat yes, there is something

(59:22):
happening. They aren't justpulling pranks on the
conductors. There's somethingfor real going down. In the
meantime, magic is stillhappening. David Copperfield is
allowing us all and actuallydoing some really cool looking
little tricks that they'resmall, been simplistic, but
they're really like fun towatch. And it just brings this

(59:42):
whole like great element ofthings because he's taking
himself so seriously and hewants everyone to be super
impressed. including, of courseJamie Lee Curtis olana, who they
have this kind of flirtatiousmoment with and you're like, go
for David. Don't yourboyfriend's and ask
He's dressed up like a bird. Youdon't want to care about him.

(01:00:03):
Tell me Elena. Is this your carthat's
kind of what's going on. Butwith a quarter, it's very good.
In the end, he she she almostdoesn't get her peanuts with her
quarter because there's apeanuts machine. I didn't know
that was a thing. But she getsthem in the end. So spoiler, it
works out with the peanuts.

(01:00:24):
Careful pronunciation, she lovesthe nut.
So a lot of starts to lose hergoddamn mind because her best
friend is killed. And thenduring a little magic show, Doc
is hanging out with herboyfriend. And partway through
the show. He goes from talkingand you know, joking around to

(01:00:45):
being dead.
Slash. And it's like, when didthis happen in a crowded,
crowded room. They're allsitting there, like super chill.
So it's like what just happened.
And it starts to kind of mountthat maybe David Copperfield
might possibly be behind this.
But maybe doc is behind this, because doc has been

(01:01:07):
particularly moody and strangeand pulling some of his own
pranks. Maybe Kenny, who isdressed up as God knows who is
behind us. We don't quite knowwhat's going on. But the bodies
are mounting. We kind of startto get the idea, that idea that
maybe doc isn't behind it, hegrabs Ilana, he pulls her back
and he locks her in a car andthe back with him. And he's

(01:01:27):
like, okay, so clearly, they'rekilling all the people who are
involved in this prank. Clearly,it's Kenny. And we have to just
bunker down and survive, he kindof sees the writing on the wall.
And he's like, we gotta like, Idon't like you very much. But we
have to get through this worktogether, which is really nice,
nice moment. And she's like,Fuck you. You just left a bunch

(01:01:49):
of people like, oh, vulnerableto this murder, and we know who
it is. And we need to figure itout and tell the conductor and
start warning people. So shebreaks out. And of course, now
he's left alone in a room thathas all kinds of closets and
hidden compartments, and herealizes he didn't check the
bathroom. And needless to say,he does not find a good end, the

(01:02:14):
driver goes ahead and pulls thetrain over. We have this great
scene where all the students arelike, forced off and they're
standing in the freezingCanadian snow.
Just Just shivering their buttsoff, they're probably going to
die if they don't get back onthis train. But they're trying
to like go through the train.
See, you know, who is who'sleft, who's the stranger, it's

(01:02:34):
clearly not one of theclassmates that they know. So
they're going through person byperson cannot figure this out.
So get everyone back on thetrain to the die, and just go
ahead and they're like, it'sfine. It's fine. We'll all hang
out together, and it'll be fine.
It is not fine. The killer doesin fact, end up in this great

(01:02:56):
chase scene with Ilana with somereally great moments going from
car to car. At one point, shelocks herself into this really
interesting like equipment cagething. And he starts coming at
her with a poker. Now, we'restill not 100% sure who this is
because they're in yet anothercostume. And I don't want to

(01:03:17):
give away who this person endsup being. I think it's really an
interesting, cool twist. Butthere's just some really great
little moments. And in the end, there's this strange moment
where the killer says, Kiss me.
Kiss me, you kind of like oh mefrom the thing before she kisses
they flash into mad PTSD startrunning around in circles. And

(01:03:44):
let's just say that the trainends up just fine. They are all
off and on their way. And thekiller is at the bottom of a
steep curve ass hit their headon some rocks and are now
floating their way down a snowyembankment, which is pretty
impressive. I was like, Oh myGod, this person's coming back.
They're like face down andwater.

(01:04:07):
Not not gonna make it. The goodthings about this movie, they
are really great at showing offthese kind of really cool, neat
locations. I felt like the trainwas just such a cool concept to
use to force everyone to bestuck together. The fact that
it's in it is it is set inCanada. So there is no other

(01:04:30):
option. You can't be like whydon't they just pull over? Well,
they can't pull over. It's alsothe middle of the night. They
just do a really great job. Alsousing that train to build the
mystery and the intrigue. Thecostumes are great for creating
these sort of false people. Ohgod, there's a moment that kills
me in this we're okay there'sthere's you know, fair amount of

(01:04:52):
gore or whatever. But the worstis like one of my greatest fears
were the killer is alone withAlon
I'm chasing her down. And she'swearing hoop earrings because
she's higher it. There's a goodearring pole. It's just yeah, I
this is there's a reason I don'twear hoop earrings for the ones
I have on right now areextremely tiny, no way you could

(01:05:14):
pull it out, um, hopefully, don't think about it, it's fine.
And I was just like, the characters are really well
established. They're all fun, they're all neat. They all have
unique personalities, theensemble cast works extremely
well, I felt like I knew whereeveryone was, why they were
where they were, that it justfeels really fleshed out. I love

(01:05:36):
the conductor character, he'sgreat. The constant pranks,
there's just a lot of likesetup, pay off setup, pay off
that altoid finger sceneactually comes back later when
the killer now has the box andshows the box and inside is an
actual finger. It's justextremely well done. And

(01:05:57):
actually at one point doc isrunning to the train going.
Everyone you know, he's carryingthe body of his friend going, Oh
my god, oh my god like this.
There's something going on. Andeveryone starts laughing because
they're so used to these dudespulling pranks. So there's a
really good like, sort of crywolf element that's happening

(01:06:19):
over and over again. And I justthink it works extremely well.
The bad things 70s music Wait asecond. It's really bad. 70s
music is like, I'll be the judgeof that. Okay, I'll let you all
you watching. say there's adance scene. That's pretty
heinous.
I have seen prom night. So it'snot as bad as that. But

(01:06:44):
there's also a band that's likethat shows up. And just as
during a lot of bad 70s thing.
And this sounds like a gigantictrain. It's a really long train.
Incredibly. Yeah. And it's notjust the senior class, I should
say. It's the whole medical, like, they invite everybody
who's in the medical program. Soyeah, so the there's like a lot

(01:07:06):
of people on this train, and thefreshmen aren't allowed to hang
out and the cool. Yeah, it'sjust a whole thing. Um, there's
also a, an issue here withmental health. They, there is
some cross dressing elements inthis, that is done extremely
poorly. And I just want to pointthat out that that's rough, and

(01:07:28):
I don't like that. And I thinkwe've come a long way. I think
for a long time. This wasn'tsomething that was seen or even
thought about. I mean, I've I'vesaid this before, but watching
Miss Congeniality too, is reallyharrowing when you're like, Wow,
you guys hate gay people. Likeit's incredibly homophobic. So I
know that we're constantlylearning and evolving, but

(01:07:50):
there's a couple cringe momentsin here that when you really
think about it does not workout. Well. Some fun. Overall,
though, you have to see thismovie. It's such a good movie.
It's such a good movie. I'mputting it on the list. Do it.
Oh my god, you have to checkthis out. A couple of neat
little behind the scenes thingshere. The idea for this movie
came to Daniel Garodnick. In adream after seeing Halloween. He

(01:08:13):
woke up and said to his wife, what do you think of putting
Halloween on a train? And shesaid, That's terrible.
Let me get right on that. jottedit down and put down terrible
train. In the morning he changedit to terror train. And he'd

(01:08:34):
written 22 pages by that morningand by three in the afternoon.
He had a deal with SandyHoward's production company.
Wow, the good old days. Yeah,Isn't that crazy? Oh my god. Um,
the train was rocked back andforth on a rig inside a
warehouse to simulate thelocomotion which I think is
great. The opening prank scenewas actually added after

(01:08:56):
principal shooting had wrappedwhen they realized they needed
an origin story.
I was like that was not a goodyou guys. Come on. He needed to
take you know another hour ortwo on that script. Absolutely.
Jamie Lee Curtis in this hadalready earned the screen queen.

(01:09:17):
Oh, my scream Queen title by thetime this launched as she did
Halloween, the fog prom nightand terror train all within two
years. It's freaking crazy manthat woman works. The
temperature got so cold in theevenings that the film crew had
they actually the cameras frozeout overnight and they had to

(01:09:38):
unfreeze them to keep usingthem. And Ben Johnson asked the
director Roger Spottiswoode togive Courtenay his character
less dialogue. He said, NowRoger, on my first day working
with john Ford, he took me asideand said, Ben, when you're in
front of the camera, you're notgoing to need too many words.
You just won't need them. Theycan get in way.

(01:10:03):
magician David Copperfield gotvery irritated during production
because he had so much troublesaying his lines that he swore
he'd never, never make anothermovie.
And for those part he didn't, hereally just did like bit parts
and TV shows as themselves.
They use a really neat, uniquemethod of lighting where they
rewired the entire train andmounted these little like

(01:10:26):
individual dimmers on theexterior of carriage cars, which
allowed them to basically justlight cars whenever they needed
at like the whim of a moment. Sothey were like, oh, we're gonna
shoot in this train car. Andthey're like, Okay, cool. And
they just like flipped thatthose switches on to light that
car. Yeah, so, so good. And thenfor the faces, they use these

(01:10:47):
little medical pen, torchlights, as they call them,
little hand lights to do theactor's faces. It just it looks
really good. It looks supernaturalistic.
They shot this almost entirelyat night, starting at 6pm
working till early in themorning.
And the guy who played Kenny, ina 2010 interview, said that he

(01:11:13):
actually got the roll bymistake. So this person actually
isn't an actor who wasn't evenauditioning. I was bringing a
good friend in for the audition, walked in, they saw the sight of
him and said, No, you're notgood. And then they looked at me
and said, Do you want toaudition? I said I had no idea
what it was for or anything likethat. I had my

(01:11:35):
own stage show. That's this kindof like more theater you thing.
And they didn't tell me whatthis was for. He said,
I thought it was doing a bitpart. And then
I got a call that said you gotthe part and I'm like, okay, and
I leave and I was going to thedoor and they asked me Mr.

(01:11:57):
McKinnon. You Do you understandwhat just happened? I said,
Yeah, I got a big part in amovie. And they said, No, you
just signed up for the lead in a20th Century Fox movie with
Jamie Lee Curtis. I had no idea.
And his friend punched him inthe face. I feel really bad for
his friend in that one. To behonest. Of course, because of
this, the director had a reallyhard time with the actor and

(01:12:18):
they did not get along. He alsodid not get along with David
Copperfield. Yeah, and also, this is a film that was included
on Roger Ebert's most hatedlist. I'm continuing to disagree
with more and more with Roger.
As time goes on. I don't knowwhat we have in common anymore.
If anything, we both watchmovies. That's about it.

(01:12:40):
While you're still alive, too,so.
I wasn't gonna bring that up.
But it's true. So I don't wantto rub that in anyone's face.
But I am still breathing. RogerEbert you're dead to me and
everyone else in my Gods so bad.
So Eric, what prank phone didyou end up doing? Well, what I'd
wanted to see for a long time, but then realize I have to talk

(01:13:03):
about something to be held tospeak of this film. But this
movie is the burning from 1981.
Looking forward tothinking about being with

(01:13:32):
someone.
Because this summer, a legend ofterror isn't just a campfire
story anymore. He smashed hisway through the mass of flames.
right out. I will return I willhave my roommate.

(01:14:00):
Right now. He's out there.
Watching.
What happened one summer fiveyears ago is about to happen.

(01:14:32):
80% from critics 60% from crowdbudget of 1.5 million and a box
office of 700 $707,770. Well, there's some kind of code going
on.
And they did it they did it wasnot what you'd call a hit.
Although I gained incredible,called following. There's one

(01:14:55):
huge glaring problem with thisfilm. Harvey Weinstein
Now was a writer on the movie.
no bones about it. We all knowhe scum. He's going to die in
prison more than likely. Sothat's always good. But this
movie has dozens of people thatworked on it.
Dozens of people that showed upevery day put their work into

(01:15:16):
this movie helped make ithappen. So I'm not going to
destroy an entire film becausethey happen to work with what a
person that turned out to bejust a raging prick son of a
bitch. They're here. So we'regonna go on and establish
firmly. Harvey Weinstein is adick. There's no getting around
the Harvey Weinstein. Okay, Iwasn't sure.

(01:15:38):
He's a raging piece of shit. Sothat being said, this was
directed by Tony Milan, whodirected victory by design,
which is a whole bunch of cardocumentaries. What?
Olympic documentaries and themovie split second
one power. Yes. That's a goodmovie. Had writers. There's one

(01:16:00):
person that wrote it. Butthere's another person Peter
Lawrence, who went on to write alot of 80s cartoon.
Starring, then this is quite thecast. I don't know if I've got
everybody listed in the firstrun through but I'll get a few
more as we go along. BrianMatthews, who is best known for
his appearance on The Love Boatin Santa Barbara. So yeah, you

(01:16:23):
don't probably know who that is.
Lea airs who was in some amazingfilms. She's
probably sadly best known forher playing the girlfriend and
Bloodsport by many, many people.
But she's also an all that jazz, which is actually one of my
favorite films and the playerwhich is also an amazing film.
She has a she had a hell of acareer. Brian Bakker, who was in
Santa Barbara Fast Times atridgemont High. Let's see

(01:16:48):
somebody you've I'm sure you'veheard of Jason Alexander.
Then this sounds roughlyfamiliar. Yeah. say well, you
know what he's been. So go outthere. And Holly Hunter. Wow. is
in the piano copycat and a fewother things.
She she's in the movie, butshe's not really in the movie.

(01:17:10):
She's sort of extra. But she's afeatured extra. She's in a lot
of it.
Larry Joshua, who went on tostart and cop rock. Oh, yeah. If
you don't know what that is,look it up. I just learned Holy
cow.
And Ned Weinberg and FisherStevens so there's a lot of
people here that some of thesewere most of these were their

(01:17:31):
first major film.
At first I thought maybe it'sgonna be based in Idaho because
they're in Kent Blackfoot.
There's a Blackfoot tribe and,and city and Idaho. Probably a
town. But not anyways. So thisis a at slasher film that takes
place at a camp in the woods. Mmhmm. In 1981, that was still not
unique.

(01:17:54):
The movie starts with the prank.
And of course goes horribly, horribly wrong. It's a very
weird prank.
bunch of guys to say they'regoing to make fun of the
caretaker of the or harass thecaretaker. And so they get a
hold of a skull and they fill itwith like maggots and put
candles in the eyes. And thenpound on the window till he

(01:18:16):
wakes up and sees the skull. Thecandles fall out whole thing
lights on fire and the guy getshorribly burned. Burning I get
it now. Yeah, fire right thereat the beginning. Wow, he does
live in a very disfigured.
And boy do they drive this homewith a series of shots of guy
convincing another doctor yougot come see this guy gotta come

(01:18:38):
see I'm not gonna believe whatit looks like. And then when
they pull the curtain back, theguy reaches up and grabs the
guy.
And this was Tom savini, doingthe effects. And boy, oh,
there's some of these effectswork in this film. It's really,
really well done.

(01:18:58):
But then you get a series ofvoiceovers as the
caretaker is leaving thehospital about how will never
recover from the scars and hislife is ruined. And he goes out
and hires a sex worker. And herreaction to him is not great. So
that ends up kind of driving himto seek revenge on all the

(01:19:19):
people thathurt him and he runs back to his
camp. Part of the problem ofknowing who was involved in
writing this film is there's onesleazy, creepy, kind of nerdy
looking guy with curly hair andglasses.
I like fucked up that's notHarvey Weinstein at 16. Really,

(01:19:40):
this kind of looks like he wouldimagine he is. And of course,
he's the sleazy guy who'speeping Tom and all that.
So there's still a little bit ofholdover from that asshole being
working on it butthe weapon of choice for this
was garden shears that's fun. Imean, you know you get burned
horribly You go to garden shearswell he was a caretaker yeah so

(01:20:03):
gardening forestthis this tree pine looks great.
There you gothe the movie opens with or the
then it moves to the camp andthe camp starts up and what I
thought was going to be themaybe the camp counselors but
and maybe some of the kidsbecause the odd ranges then the

(01:20:25):
kids show up and these arelittle kids. So it's like okay,
so that is the camp counselorand they're taking care of like,
eight 910 year olds so so theyget the guy who's the peeping
Tom. And of course the ladies dothe proper things and yelled at
him and stuff guy comes, don'tworry, I'll look after him. And
he really doesn't do anything.

(01:20:46):
Like you shouldn't do that dude, don't do shit. Like that is what
it amounted to.
One thing that always surprisesme when you're watching these
80s things as times have changeda lot. How much smoking goes on?
Sure.
like half the camp counselorssmoke and there's also Jason
Alexander is one of the coolkids what I'm assuming he has

(01:21:07):
hair at this point. Got a fullhead of hair. He's kind of slim
right? Whoa, got the you knowthe number jersey t shirt on
this like verse.
But so it that's kind of funhaving him though. Stand up to

(01:21:28):
the kids. I don't worry. I'llhelp you get bullied. I'll help
you take care of that is kind ofweird. Funny. Nowadays I go.
Okay.
Then of course, you've got theusual segment of antics that go
on in any of these camp moviesof people wandering around and
hooking up and pranking eachother and silly stuff like that.

(01:21:51):
Then a few of them like four orfive for the kids and a bunch of
the counselors gocanoeing trip to an island. So
they all get in their canoes andhead out to an island and that's
where Jason's the stud flirtyguy throwing water on the ladies
canoe until it falls over. Andthey honestly look like they

(01:22:13):
have a lot of fun in that scene.
So check they pulled it offand they tell this part This
movie is loosely based on somecalled The Legend of cropsy
which is a New England area ofcountry legend and they tell the
story during a campfire theytell the crops the legendary and
it's really well told the guywho tells the story does a great

(01:22:35):
job it's well shot I know I'vementioned a few times a day for
night stuff and apparently thiswhole movie was Day for Night
except for the actual scenes ofa campfire holy shit it's well
shot the Day for Night workswell and there was humor for a
shout factory I think remasterthis recently and did a really
good job it looks great.

(01:22:58):
But that of course leads toanother kind of little prank but
more of a boo scare you in thewoods friend.
A couple goes for a naked swimin the lake that guy's a raging
asshole. So the lady gets up andleaves and then she disappears
what happened to her the thecanoes are gone somebody's
pulling a prank again. And thenyou know slashers be slashing

(01:23:21):
sugar a lot of that they theybuild a quickly build a canoe
that's relatively water ready.
So they go out on the canoe. Andthis was a film that was this
was part of the video nasties.
And a large people many peoplebelieve it's because of this
scene, where they go out on thecanoe and the cropsy guy comes
out and slaughters everybodythat's on this little raft. It's

(01:23:42):
like, oh my god. His Slovenia'swork in this is really
disturbingly well done. Thereare moments where like, somebody
gets stabbed, like in the side, and it looks so realistic.
That's grim. There's a lot to beover the top slasher stuff, but
he's definitely a top of hisgame in this film. Wow.

(01:24:03):
He did say he felt a littleweird having people line up to
find out how they were going toget killed.
There's another unique momentwhere the kind of hero guy gets
killed, but he doesn't getkilled just kind of gets knocked
on the head. And somehow theslasher guy who's thoroughly

(01:24:23):
taken care of everybody elsekind of just lets him be so
alright, of course he This isnot a final girl movie. There's
a whole bunch of survivors.
There's several differentsurvivors. And the last scene is
two of the guys in a copper mineor a copper mill or something
that was out in the woods.
There's a real place they used.
So they're running aroundthrough this place and it looks

(01:24:44):
really cool.
Butthey pretty much just take him
out like oh surprise that allthe survivors how many people
survive I guess they hadn'tquite onto the cut onto the
Friday the 13th dayWe're almost everybody has
today.
This would have been a horriblybrutal film though if he'd gone

(01:25:05):
through and killed everybody atthat camp because yeah, a lot, a
lot of little kids but like 60a pile. So trivia notes because
it's a slasher film. I'm notgoing to go into detail of what
happens but it's largelyconsidered one of the better
slasher films by slasherexperts. I guess. It's good.
It's solid. It's got well actingobviously, a lot of people in it

(01:25:28):
went on to be incrediblysuccessful in the acting world.
The director really didn't. Butit looks like he had fun. He
directed car videos, howhorrible can that be?
But the concept of the film wasoriginally was originally titled
The cropsy maniac. Like I said, the campfire tells the story,

(01:25:50):
they're also basis of thedocumentary which I have seen, I
think it was submitted.
Myth. Maybe Yeah, 2009 wouldhave been mafic. But it's a very
good documentary. And prettyinteresting.
Though they make absolutely noreal reference to this film, in
the documentary, there's anentire movie based on the story

(01:26:10):
and justthere's a shot of kids kicking
wildly while they're on fire wasTom savini. Because he didn't
like the way they're kicking.
Like I can do this better. Thewardrobe on the film was largely
bought, brought by the cast, they didn't really have wardrobe
at all.
So they didn't have a costumeperson on set, and everybody

(01:26:31):
just took care of their ownstuff. Which is probably why it
looks a little moreyou know, 90, or something where
you believe the clothes worn inthe 80s and the 90s look at this
movie. Did everybody wanderaround with ski goggles is no
it's a movie is exaggerated, exaggerating. So much in this
one.

(01:26:53):
The director said there was somuch dust in the copper copper
mine, that he was still coughingit up several weeks later after
completing this year. Oh, itlooked pretty dusty. Holly
Hunter had a great statementabout being in the film it was
technically your screen debut islike certain points. Well, look,
I got paid more than I evercould have imagined at the burn

(01:27:13):
burning. I was making $1,000 aweek. I could make my rent. I
didn't have to wait tables. Igot these new friends. And I was
basically a glorified extra. Andyou barely see her. She shows
she's basically one of the camppeople but she shows off us in
the background a lot. Wow.
That's like and she got ourScreen Actors Guild.
Great.

(01:27:34):
And again, along the end, similar to the kicking feet,
however, the director decidedthe some of the people weren't
holding the garden share aswell. So he decided he was going
to kill all the people. I tellyou, there's some sick directors
out there.
It was a feature film they viewof Jason Alexander Fisher

(01:27:54):
Stevens and Holly Hunter.
Stevens would have only two morehorror credits as max Armstrong
and then the did the hunger. Butthen he went on to executive
produce the midnight meat train.
They originally were going toshoot the finale in a cave. They
went through one of the caveswas full of that. Yeah.

(01:28:16):
The other cave they went throughafter they scouted it collapsed.
Oh my god.
Like, let's just do the mine.
Outside of the mine. There'salways one of these kinds of
notes that this film which has asimilar storyline to Friday 13th
according to special effectsmakeup artists, Tom savini
was actually written beforeFriday the 13th Okay.

(01:28:42):
You know, you worked on both ofthem. So what? Exactly, and it
does show up on many best oflists for slashers because it's
just well done.
And yeah, Harvey Weinstein isstill a shithead. But this is a
weird movie worth watching, andhe's not going to collect any
proceeds from it anymore. Themovies well worth its place in

(01:29:06):
the pantheon of good slasherfilms. Well, good picks, you
guys. I haven't seen either ofyours. And I want to know, and I
think they're both on shutter.
Yeah. Yeah. So maybe that's whatI'm doing tonight. Yeah. Very,
very cool. It's weird, becauseHave you seen carry? No, so none
of us have seen any of it? Yeah.

(01:29:31):
I haven't seen Carrie. Wow. Allthis weirdness. Just to be
clear, you have seen Carrie, youhaven't seen the ray.
have seen the spleen spleenscreen. Splitting. spleen
flooding.
Cool. I think that means Eric,it's your choice for the next

(01:29:52):
topic. Oh, yeah, it is.
But I did forget the topic.
We're gonna go with bang.
movies movies that have beenbanned and preferably like maybe
a whole country but if you cancome up with other ways just
that they have major banning andnot being able to screen at
certain places for some timeawesome i i like it and it's not

(01:30:16):
marching band that's right no nomusical drumline
summary but it'd be twistingsome kind of metal rod and
here's to all of us saying jamiei hope you laugh hard enough to
fall on your treadmill ohabsolutely

(01:30:38):
i think i missed something jamiewas telling me last night how he
gets weird looks listening toour podcast while he's working
out ron carefullylast episode i talked about the
the value for value model that iwanted to take this in and
already we've gotten some reallynice feedback on it and a very

(01:30:59):
generous donation which i thinkwe should be talking about a
little bit later but thatdonation came with a request
which we are definitely going tohonor yes yes even beyond what
you requested about itso so thanks so much for
everybody liking sharingwhatever value you get out of
this i haven't sorry i were onthis subject i heard a really

(01:31:23):
interesting idea today about howto share one thing if you're
really liking this podcast andyou've been listening to a while
so you you're you're comfortablereach out to a friend of yours
reach out to somebody in yourfamily that you think might like
it send them a text message heycheck this out nobody is more
interested in listening tosomething or watching something
then the thing that's been toldto you by somebody you really

(01:31:47):
like or really trust so thatwould be so cool just text a
friend or a family member orsomebody that is weird and
enjoys movies in weird ways andlet them know about Strange
Aeons radio that'd be great oh ilove that idea actually i've
done something similar for otherpodcasts with friends where i'll
find like an episode that ithink that they would

(01:32:08):
particularly like and share withthem the link so if there's an
episode that we did that youthink is just right for somebody
else to check out or you want tointroduce somebody to a movie
that maybe they've been avoidingbut want to get them a little
more intrigued and yeahabsolutely share a link for that
episode that we let somebodyknow their favorite movie is
cobra well we got a greatconversation

(01:32:30):
that poor pizza man that was amassacre
my buddy george we text back andforth all the time and i tried
to suggest podcast to him and hefinally it's like look man i
don't listen to very manypodcasts the only one i listened
to is yoursthanks dude don't worry about
those other oneswho needs additional podcasts

(01:32:52):
reallyall right so that's it next week
we're coming back and we aretalking movies that have been
banned and we will see you thenour show is recorded somewhere
high above naval station everettat the nexus of all realities
and is engineered and producedby eric margaret our theme music
is Strange Aeons part one by theband and he is usually
