Unknown (00:03):
Oh, sorry, did I break
your concentration?
Somewhere between science andsuperstition to show you
(00:28):
Strange Aeons Southern StrangeAeons radio that is Eric over
there. That's finesse overthere. Oh, boy, you guys it's a
blustery spring day here.
Yes.
I saw the trailer for the Zackor not Zack. James Gunn James
(00:48):
Gunn Suicide Squad. And I wasbefore seeing this I was like,
there's no possible way he cando King Shark better than they
did on the Harley Quinn animatedshow. But it looks like he might
have nailed him for thisfake they might have taken a
little bit of that. Yeah, showand God Hey, let's make him more
violent.
(01:08):
Yeah, it did look like I didn'trealize I mean, I haven't read
it in the comments. So I wasn'taware of the universe, but I
didn't realize there weremultiple Suicide Squad teams. So
is it like a whole new it's likea whole new crew for the most
part right?
Well, I think the way it worksis like any special forces up
they've got a number ofcriminals who have been given
(01:30):
this option and they will bepicked and chosen from for
whatever the team needs to befor whatever the threat is.
Okay, interest that would that'smy guess I was never a fan of
the comic book or anything.
But this this looks good. Myfingers kind of like you know
what? I didn't see the original.
I probably still won't. I'lljust watch this one.
(01:52):
It looks so like such a fun castwith like Channing Tatum wearing
like a bucket on his heador whatever is
going on. Kimber, who else wasthere in there, but I remember
being like, oh, man, this isgonna be really neat.
Well, Idris Elba Yes. Goodness.
Yes. Particular man crush ofmine. So I'm very much looking
forward to enable DC seems to bestill kind of grasping at trying
(02:15):
to figure out what makes Marvelwork. You know, they they did it
when they brought Joss Whedoninto to do justice league and
didn't quite work. And now itseems like they're going to try
and do this because this feltvery much like I was watching a
Guardians of the Galaxy trailerwith 70s music and the quick
cutting and all that so yeah,I think I think the answer is
(02:38):
figure out something cool to do.
Don't just rip off and try topredict the market. And like I
hate that hate that pre emptiveof like, well, what are the fans
wants? Like no, ignore the fansmake something you want to make
that you think is cool. And ifyou think it's cool, other
people will think it's cool tohashtag keep the Snyder universe
(02:59):
going.
And compared to some of theothers.
Yes.
All and I did see there was somebacklash to the trailer of our
fanboys saying, Who cares? Whywould we do this? We want the
Snyder universe to continue.
Well, first, the movie that's already done.
(03:20):
And also you know, every singleone of them are going to see it
anyway. Of course.
So part of the difference therebeing is the only thing I could
think is obviously you've neverdirected a goddamn movie. If you
want the Snyder verse tocontinue and he be the only guy
to direct DC know he's gonnaburn out very fast. Yeah, that
(03:42):
is not gonna last.
I'm okay with like Snyder doinga Justice League three, but they
kind of messed up because rightbefore they put out the HBO
Justice League, when the exactsaid, Now we're letting Snyder
put out this thing and like,we're gonna let him have his
time in the sun. And, you know,we really feel like we owe it to
(04:03):
him. But But don't you know, there's not going to be any
future justice like films, justso you know. And I'm like, Oh,
you idiot.
Like, whydid you say that before it even
came out? Just wait, just wait aweek, and then decide whether or
not you want to make like apublic disclaimer that could
just make you money? Yeah.
Yeah. Well, I think that I mean, this is a business and if the
(04:27):
Justice League Snyder cut doesthat, well, they'll they will
find a way to,like Spider Man all over again.
Yeah.
And I've long believed that thefans are the worst part of
fandom and you know, allowingthem to kind of push this is is
(04:47):
not going down well.
Except for Star Trek fans.
They're pretty cool. Yeah. I'm apart of a lot of Facebook
starter groups and they arelovely human being And they're
always positive and they'renever like mean to each other.
It's really nice nice.
(05:08):
Dad that said, You're not gonnafind that DC no Star Wars Star
Wars. No,absolutely not. The different
kinds of people feel like this.
I started watching theinvincible animated series.
Oh my god, I didn't realize itwas out already.
Yes,I watched it. I think I have
like 10 minutes left in thesecond episode,
but Oh, you're further aheadthan me. Okay,
(05:29):
I watched the full first one andmost of the second
What do you think so far?
I was a little disappointed howquickly they made the big
reveal.
I was very I don't know if I wasdisappointed, but I was kind of
shocked. I was like, this is aepisode three reveal, right? Why
Why did you do that? But I willsay this. I'm super disappointed
in the animation itself. Itlooks very cookie cutter GI Joe,
(05:53):
you know,it definitely has that. Factory
made animation. Look, the voiceacting is great. Okay, Simmons
is on the mat. The talentinvolved in the voice is great.
But the animation is is tough.
They certainly are not shyingaway from the incredible
violence, right. ButI wish they'd given it just a
(06:15):
little more just a little bitmore stylized. Even. It wouldn't
have taken away their drawing itthey wouldn't not have taken
much to tweak it to make it lookvery similar to a comic book.
Yeah, yeah, I guess that's whatbothered me. I was like, Okay,
this almost looks like the comicbook. So why not just go all the
(06:35):
way? Yeah, the comic book alwayshad a very comic book II style
of art. It just had a ton ofgore in it also.
Yeah. And if they had taken thetime like the book dead to me, I
still gonna watch it. I like it.
But that reveal of did thereason it was so powerful in the
comics is they spent a long timebuilding the family and building
(06:56):
the father son relationship andthe relationship with the
guardians. And there's somemajor characters that they just
wiped out in first episode thathad wonderful stories for them,
but Oh, well.
Yeah. So I think that's, that'sa failure on their part to
(07:16):
understand that people wouldhave stuck with it. You know, I
think that I think it was EricLarson, who said that he didn't
believe that Kirkman had thatplan the entire time. He
believed that that was Crispin'sidea once the sale started
slipping on the book. Andequipment has always said, you
(07:38):
know, no, you got to you got toget these people invested in
these people before you suddenlystart killing them off. Yeah,
exactly. Yeah,I can't imagine he's the kind of
guy who would have like, suddenly diverted his pot due to
sales. But I've also read a lotof bad career
days back in the early dayswhen he was a money grabbing
1980s business artists. Idon't know that but I know he
(08:00):
wanted to keep his jobs. Oh,yeah. Sure. That there, that's
fair.
But yeah. I'm glad the voiceacting is so stronger. Be
really.
Yeah. And surprisingly, youknow, it's Steven yen as Mark.
And I didn't realize he had sucha recognizable voice. Or maybe
(08:24):
it's just because of so manyyears of The Walking Dead that I
just see his face when I hearhis voice. So I was like, Oh,
this was actually a really solidchoice.
Yeah. The other one who I wassurprised to, I forgot the guy
from justified in the shield andvice principals. Walter Yeah,
(08:45):
well, this is the Scarface guywith the scars on his face.
Right. And I knew that, and thenhe speaks What? He sounds
different. I don't know whathe's doing. But I didn't have
Walters. Just go right in myface. When he started talking.
He's like, Oh, that'sinteresting, because I certainly
did with Stephen and his dad.
(09:06):
Yeah. Yeah, definitely gonnakeep watching it. But it wasn't
the big burst of Hope I was.
Yeah, I was hoping forJapan. I also saw something semi
disappointing. I watched onelate night while probably making
notes for the show. I threw onthe last blockbuster, which is
(09:26):
that Netflix, Doc? Yeah. didn'tlove it. No. Okay. It was fine.
I mean, it wasn't bad, but Ijust I don't know. I don't know.
It felt like kind of a lazy orrushed documentary. It just
didn't feel like there was a lotof purpose behind it or like
heart to it. And I The irony isnot lost on me that of course it
(09:48):
was playing on Netflix. Sure.
It's about the lastquestion how many times is Kevin
Smith cry during his interviews?
I don't know that he actuallycried at all during this Whoa,
whoa, whoa, he was veryreaction to a trailer or the end
of a movie maybe I want to seeit. But my concept of
(10:09):
blockbuster does not have thatrosy sheen that so many people
do becauseyou're pretty good at not just
giving it the positive. They'rea terrible company.
They're a god awful company.
What they represent that videoworld that rental thing I
absolutely have a massive Rosiemissing of Yeah, but working at
suncoast and getting theindustry magazines and stuff.
(10:33):
They're a terrible, awfulcompany just absolutely as
cutthroat as you get. And theywould move into like a mom and
pop store in the same stripmall, reduce all rentals for
everything to 99 cents for threedays, until mom and Paul went
out of business and then raisedtheir prices up to their normal
like $5 for a new release andtwo bucks for whatever it was
(10:55):
kinda like when I first moved toissaquah you are getting you at
really cheap rentals atblockbuster. Right? And I there
were like $5 a night orsomething is o'clock because
there's nothing else around. Soand they did a lot of other
horrible shit as far as likeediting movies and things. But
the concept in the style ofvideo rental stores, right?
(11:18):
Luckily, my favorite one stillexists. Oh, that's cool
Scarecrow.
Oh, Oh, sure. Of courseScarecrow, which is is that
officially like a nonprofit?
They're basically a museum nowis how they're set up. Yeah,
it's really smart.
Very, very smart is a great wayto go. I mean, I only went to
(11:38):
Scarecrow, I've only been thereonce. Yeah. And it was like
right before COVID.
So I can really participate inanything. But of course, all of
that being said, the lastblockbuster seems like a really
cool fun store.
And I will say that's actuallywhat a lot of the heart of the
movie hinges on is the lastblockbuster and who the person
who runs it and how it's beenlike, it's this place that
(12:00):
pretty much everyone in the townof Bend Oregon has at one point
or another worked at. And sothey have like an annual like
picnic where everybody who'spart of part of the quote
unquote, blockbuster familyshows up and they close down and
they have like, handwrittensigns. And they made their own t
shirts. And like she she goesaround and just drives to
different stores to buy, like,as many of the new releases as
(12:22):
she can. And you know, stocks.
It's this one woman who's reallyrunning it. So it feels like
that thing that was the moviestore lived. It's almost like a
full circle like, mom and pop stores just 100%
like a family run like all herkids help run it like her kids
like who was I think like fiveor six, they would put him in a
(12:43):
little blockbuster shirt andhave him walk around and like
say like, Can I help you? Do youwant help finding a rental? So
there was just that part is verysweet. It just feels a little
bit random and scattered side ofit. I don't know what the main
point. I don't know what thepoint of the movie? Yes, there's
a big difference between thefranchises and the corporate
(13:04):
run. stores. The franchises werea lot of great rental stores.
Yeah. And that's what they saidis basically it was a rental
store and then blockbusterbought it but it remained the
thing that it was before it justhad new marketing. Yeah, it was
fine. It was fine as a movie ifyou want to stay awake and just
(13:26):
need something on. Then Irecommend it ringing
endorsement.
Yeah.
Let's see. Well, I watched onecalled bloodfest.
shift gears. Blood saysI wrote that down, right. It's a
a convention. Giant out doorconvention. Is this a doc? No.
(13:46):
Oh, no. And it's the storystarts off and it's a guy who
loves horror films. But hismother was murdered when he was
very young murdered in front ofthis as in the movie is murdered
in front of him and his dad goesoff the deep end and becomes
like a satanic panic kind ofguys. Just like all horror
(14:06):
movies are bad. Everything aboutthem is bad. But his mother just
before she died was telling himwe watch these scary movies. So
we know we can handle them. Sowhen real scary things happen.
We've felt fear before kind ofthat setup. And it was fun. It
wasit wasn't great when something
(14:30):
happens at this. Oh, yeah.
convention then.
Yeah. It starts off veryquickly. They get into the fast
and there is an opening stageshow and I'm watching this go
on. thinking okay, nobody likescryptic on we are never going to
be able to afford to do anythingsimilar to this. Just so you
know. But then all hell breaksloose because they pull up. Can
(14:54):
we bring up a couple of peoplefrom the audience and they
probably killed them on stage.
Holy crap, I mean, so half thepeople are going around half the
people are getting shit that wasreal. And then it just, it's the
guy set up cameras all over thefield and they're just going to
kill a bunch of people. And it'sthat kind of a, you can make it
if you know all the rules youcan escape alive. But it's fun.
(15:16):
The biggest problem was the thedirector is also one of the big
actors. And this is a big movie.
It's not big budget, but there'sa lot going on. It's this the
control center where they'recontrolling all the stuff.
There's the cabins and thestages, at least a very big
(15:38):
movie. I think he might havebeen better served just
directing it cuz it's prettygood. But it just needs a little
little push more. And I think hecould have had something really
really good.
What did you watch this on?
Pretty sure it was shatter.
This sounds fun. I get it. Itis.
It is definitely fun. No doubtabout that. There's a lot of
(16:00):
over the top goofiness that somework, some doesn't. But it's all
well worth watching.
Cool. I rented a movie that justcame out called come true. Have
you heard about this? Oh, it isabout a girl who is suffering
from these kind of recurringdreams of a dark figure in her
(16:20):
dreams. And she is starting toaffect your life and everything.
She's She's young. And she signsup for like a university sleep
study. And she goes in there andthey hook her up to this thing.
And it gets into some sciencefictiony shit where they can
kind of see what she's dreaming, you know, images on a screen and
stuff like this. And they theyrealize that everybody in the
(16:42):
sleep study is having a dream ofthis dark figure with these kind
of glowing eyes. And it's prettydang creepy. It's really slow,
the effects are minimal. TheDream effects are, are pretty
cool. You can clearly tell thedifference between you know,
(17:03):
it's not A Nightmare on ElmStreet type of thing where
you're like, Am I dreaming? Isthis real? It's it goes into
like a different almost like afantasy world when she's
dreaming. And I just thought itwas really smartly written, well
directed, very well acted. Ididn't know any of these actors.
And just at the end of it, I waslike, boy, that was a cool
(17:26):
little movie. You know? Nothingthat was gonna be a franchise or
anything like that. Just areally solid eerie little horror
flick.
Well, last night night beforelast night, I saw the second
episode of something but I canonly assume we've all watched
(17:49):
Falcon and dude, bro,Falcon and the snowman.
Our man, our man arm dude. I'mnever gonna remember man. Yeah,
and they're never gonna rememberthe name of the show. I can't
get it to work in my head. Butyeah, it's interesting, because
Have you have you guys watchedit? Yes. Okay. I do like that.
(18:12):
They already gave me a twist.
Because I was like, at the endof episode one. I was like, Oh,
no, new Captain America that wedon't know anything about. He's
gonna be a dick or evil or Hydraor whatever. And then it's just
a really good guy who's likereally kind of deserving to a
certain extent of the title andlike, he's a war hero, and he
(18:32):
has really good intentions. Andhe just rings that like, very
similar Captain America vibe.
Now obviously, we all know that.
He's not the one who should havethis mantle. But I liked that as
a twist more than what the twistwould have been if it was like a
but he's evil. But maybe hecould still be evil.
I mean, he is based on acharacter from the comics.
(18:55):
Oh, Izzy.
I know. And I wouldn't say thathe was evil, but he didn't
exactly the attributes ofCaptain America that one would
hope for. Well, so far.
He has they It was nice. Theyredesigned his helmet a little
bit, too.
Yeah, I noticed that it looked abit draw was no longer squished.
Yeah, his face.
(19:16):
Oh my god. Awfulbig, big jaw. But he takes that
helmet off like Oh, why? Yeah,no wonder that looked weird in
that original.
Yeah. And he's such a handsomeman. I mean, he looks so much
like his dad. kind ofridiculous. It's ridiculous.
You're like, Oh, I can everytime he like turns his head. I'm
like, Oh, it's Kurt.
Every time anyone says anythingabout a Big Trouble in Little
(19:39):
China reboot. I'm like, I don'tas much. You know. I love the
rock. I don't want the rock inthat. I want. Wyatt. Russell.
Yeah. And just playing the samecharacter.
Yeah, and I will say thattherapy scene was pretty solid.
I I like this show a lot. Yeah.
So I've got very high hopes forit.
(20:02):
Yeah. And again, going back tothe DC Marvel thing, the balls
these producers have to do thesemini series is that are setting
up phenomenally deep storylinesfor future movies and stuff.
It's just great. Yeah. Oh, cool.
I'm glad they're not worriedabout oh, wow, one division was
a big hit. We got to do a seasontwo, like, no, that's what we
(20:25):
did.
We had that universe set up andyou'll find out more when you go
to see Dr. Strange tolike you were saying, Eric, that
they've got like 13 shows orsomething to come out
something like that they hadplanned up to 13 or 14 of these
(20:45):
things. And I don't know if it'sthese specifically like eight
episode things, or if they'redoing other little things, but
like, Damn, crazy. Yeah, I remember when
they did the Yeah, the guy whocame up on the stage and was
like, and we've got this comingin this coming. I was like, Oh
my god, take a breath, sir. Thisis legal. Why? I'm glad because
I'm bored. But Whoa.
(21:08):
Well, and they're, you know,we've been saying this, they're
doing it right. And DC continuesto do it wrong, because there
was no reason why. Titanscouldn't have somehow been
connected to the Justice Leagueuniverse. You know, part of my
complaint of Cyborg in ZackSnyder's film is that he's not
(21:34):
nearly as good as a cyborg anddoom patrol is just his effects
are way better.
The guy who plays him in Doompatrol is fantastic.
He seems to have read the comicyou know, which Zack clearly has
not friend. And kindof Cyborg is kind of powerful in
that movies like Cyborg can dolike anything he wants.
Basically,he set him up basically as the
most powerful person in the DCUniverse. Yeah.
(22:01):
Weiss I want to delve differentagain. I watched I showed her
short film the stylist atcryptic con two years ago. So
it's like well, let's check outthe feature on arrow right.
Available for sponsorship here.
We love you.
I would love a free arrow moviesto just watch and talk about
(22:21):
it's pretty good.
It's same storySo first, I believe the first
like few minutes are the shortbasically reshot okay. But
strong acting really good stuffincredibly deep character with
the stylist and her confusion inthe world and trying to get
along as a person.
(22:43):
what's the what's the premise?
She is a serial killer that is ahairstylist that drugs and
scalps people that she's stylingtheir hair. And she will she's
got like a collection in herbasement of hair that she
occasionally puts on theso it's kind of a reimagining to
a certain extent. mainiacsort of but she's a lot deeper
(23:05):
character. Yeah. But yeah, that's actually not conceptually
Yeah, there's a lot of that ideathere. But really well shot
I was worried it didn't feel tome like this was an idea that
could be expanded into a featurebut you feel like it worked
that was my that was my thinkingtoo as I cut the short nails and
(23:26):
it's they're they're reallygood. But then they expand on
her with like suddenlyunderstanding the world of how
she made how she can makefriends are not make friends are
like the main storyline is oneof our clients wants her to do
weddings and she's like, I don'tdo weddings. And she eventually
agrees to do it and then alsogets pulled in to be part of
(23:47):
like the bridesmaids. Yeah, parties and things and is a fish
out of water and those and it'sa strong film. And I I hope she
continues to do more stuffbecause this looks great. The
acting is good. There's a lot ofuniqueness going on here. I
(24:09):
suppose. Pretty good. Eventhough I'd point I'm going this
isn't entirely made for me.
There's a very I'd be curious ifyou would see it run so what you
would think because it's got avery strong living female world
feeling that I haven't gottenfrom a lot of movies. Yeah, God
That sounds really curious. Seewhat you think because there's
(24:31):
times I felt like this istelling a real story that I
don't know. Wow. Sothat's very cool. I mean, like
and the bridal industry is hisown weird thing as somebody
who's done some wedding weddingvideography and, and I also had
to cut a series where a makeupartists was talking about doing
(24:52):
specifically wedding makeup. Soit sounds very interesting.
Yeah, I don't like it. Yeah,I'll try it. Know what is
availablearrow arrow exclusive right now
but I'm sure it'll go to otherarrows started in October and
this was their big launchingthing here in January whatever
and they released this it seemsto have done very well for them
(25:14):
very well.
Oh cool.
Well, why don't we take a littlebreak and I can scrub all this
talk about women and everythingon the brain we can get back to
cool stuff when we come back.
Straightsnacktime kid she really loves
(25:37):
to snack. She really cares somuch fun. You've all
theater. Andwhen you think she's
coming back.
(25:59):
Cabbage Patch Kids snacktime kitcomes with all the plates that
you see here. It's soldseparately, including ruido
back Eric, yeswas your topic chip by golly I
suppose. And got returningdirector here. Alex della
(26:24):
Iglesia who I talked about forthe day of the beast in Episode
73 the devil you say, Oh, ah,and he also directed the last
circuit switching and bitchingand the very good 30 coins.
witching and bitching is a greatmovie with a bad title.
Yes.
(26:45):
I've just started getting into30 coins.
So far so good. She is a crazy.
I was kind of like, well, thisis fun. It's a little weird, but
then I heard he was the directorof gone Okay, makes perfect
sense now. Just a little off ifyou've seen any of those films I
listed and I saw the last circusfirst long ago no idea who he
(27:06):
was my watch Come on. This isreally weird, but really good.
Is it a horror film? Oh, yeah.
Oh, really crazy dark. Killercircus kind of thing.
Is it Spanish? Yeah.
writer was Barry Gifford who wasalso involved in writing Wild at
Heart novelization of the filmapparently. Wait and he also
(27:30):
wrote last highway and thenthere's It's been a while since
I had this one. That one thishard, but it's also the guy who
wrote the day of the beast 30coins live flash. Your Hey. Good
Gary cha Chavarria. Like, letters long. David truvia,
(27:51):
who's living in living is easywith eyes closed. And Alex also
was a writer on the film he'swriter on almost everything he
directs the star lady who Ihaven't always liked in movies
but is phenomenal in this isRosie Perez. From do the right
thing Pineapple Express. So manythings her iron appeal is
(28:14):
gigantic. And heavy heavy.
Heavier bar Dame Oh, nice.
Second lead here from goldenballs. The kitten the moon No
Country for Old Men is probablymost known for in Skyfall and
the upcoming Bride ofFrankenstein which would be
(28:34):
playing Frankenstein.
Whoa.
Wait Is this harkening back tothat dark universe can't
forget it.
He was in the photo shoots forthose for the like magazine
covers for the dark universeuniversals disastrous first one
yeah, the mummy. Yeah,I mean, I didn't see them on me
but like he was one of thepeople in their lineup.
(28:59):
And James Gandolfini from Yeah, the sopranos and screamin Jay
HawkinsWow. That but a spell on you.
That sounds like a journey.
Oh, it is. Oh my God, this movieis absolutely insane. It starts
with Rosie Perez having somekind of a leopard dream or a
(29:20):
leopard comes in and it's notit's not wrong. interferes wakes
her up as I say joins her in bedbut that sounds completely like
not what happened at all. It'smore like a kiddie coming to say
hello. It starts off with hergetting hit on by a guy and it
does not go well for him. Notviolent wise but just her her
(29:43):
takedown of why he reallydoesn't want to be involved with
her is just a lot of fun andreally well delivered. The
opening credits have aphenomenal This was made and
what I didn't even say I didn'teven say the name of the movie.
I just dove right Under thedirector
I barely listened to you Soyeah, but I recognize it so let
me go back here. PerditaDurango, also known as dance
(30:07):
with the devilthe rotten tomatoes on this one
(31:44):
is 33 from the critics out 63from the crowd Oh made for 4.2
million euroand you probably don't have a
view like that didn'thave any box office for a lot of
reasons. But the the okay thenbla bla bla bla bla isn't it and
is dragged by and is written bythe opening credits have this
(32:07):
amazing series of helicoptershots over Mexico in this giant
graveyard where she has gone tospread the ashes of her sister.
Then Javier Bardem shows up inhis terrible haircut it's like
on par with like I think it wasscream three where she had the
horrible bangs at certain likethat but he also has really long
(32:29):
hair ohhe's he's not a nice guy. He
robs a bank and makes the ladyof the teller Take your shirt
off at you make this so quickly, incredibly sleazy. Failing, the
film does a really neat job ofswitching between English and
Spanish. It's almost all inEnglish, but there's also all
the actors just move right intospeaking Spanish at times, and
(32:52):
it's completely seamless, reallywell done. bardem says he is a
powerful practitioner of centurya fusion of Catholic and African
folk beliefs that emerged inCuba in the 17th century and
still has practitioners to thisday. They didn't couldn't quite
figure out how accurate what hedoes is I'm sure it's not fully
(33:13):
accurate considering Cubansacrifices are involved. not
part of the religion not notpart of anything and Catholic I
always man, is it is it realbecause like Voodoo is a mix of
African, you know, culture andsome Catholicism. Yeah, so I
(33:35):
don't know. I've never heard ofSanta Maria though.
It's more prevalent in Mexicoand Cuba, Cuba.
Yeah, for sure. Wow. We're inCuban communities and big cities
New York.
That song suddenly makes so muchsense. I don't practice Santa
Maria I just thought it was abeer I don't know.
(33:57):
I don't know it justI was in high school is an ESA
never change.
Oh, and the film came out in1997 perfect timing.
Let's see the if they do part ofhow he raises his money other
than robbing banks is heperforms versions of century
(34:18):
rituals for tourists. Andthey're crazy. Wow, he the first
one he does he's got a body thathe's stolen from a graveyard and
he's chopping legs off the bodyand arms and spitting blood in
the face of the people that arewatching it now this I mean it
(34:39):
is Whoa. And James Gandolfinishows up with a video camera
trying to videotape everythingthat's going on.
Is this something like Why? Whyis he filming?
You don't know yet? Okay. Justthe and 97 that pre Sopranos are
right around in soprano. Preread around. It's pretty close.
(35:02):
So he wasn't really a householdface yet. I don't know he would
recognize them right away but sonow they're setting up the other
two couple. The other couple inthe movie. They go to a family,
white family with absolutelyevery inch of their furniture
covered in plastic and the dad'susing some purchased on TV
(35:26):
exercise gear, I think it wascalled the crossbow or something
like that. And wife is verybizarre and they are as arion as
you could get both very the guywho's picking the girl up and
the daughter are both non hairblue eyes. So they head on out
(35:47):
for their supposedly, we havefun. Meanwhile, Javier and Rosie
have that this plan to kidnapsomeone. And because the he's
got a giant job coming up wherehe is going to drive illegal
fetuses to Nevada, to Las Vegasfor makeup companies. Okay,
so it's such a big job, he feelshe needs a human sacrifice to
(36:11):
make sure it goes well. And theyshow a little bit about how he
gets away with stuff like music,he uses his religion to cross
the border at one point andthey've got the stolen body and
a whole bunch of cash like$20,000 in cash sitting in the
back seat with a blanket overit. And he says a prayer and
puts the their version of prayerbeads over the body and the
(36:34):
border guys just like looks atit like flashlight. Okay, good
go on. So it's part of histhinking that his religion keeps
us safe. And this is such a bigjob. He's got to find somebody
to, to do a big ritual withheavier keeps. There's some
strange backstory, I'm notentirely certain why it's here,
because it's written like it'sRosie's movie. But Javier has
(36:57):
got more backstory going on. Andhe's featured a little bit more.
So it's, it's an uncomfortablebalance to who's the lead in
this, which works really well insome scenes and really doesn't
work at other times. They showhis background, and I may imply
he was in a war, but I'm notsure if he's making that up. Or
(37:18):
if it was real, because theydon't really verify. So they get
hired to do the fetus for makeupdrive. And they have this wild
scene, which is really welldone, where the two of them go
to this incredibly busy street.
And just he gets out of the carwash rows, he sits in the car
watching me grab somebody offthe street said this guy. No,
no, no, no. turns around, grabsome other guy brings them up to
(37:42):
the truck door that come abouthim. No, no, no, he's not right.
And she eventually gets annoyedwith him picking all the wrong
people. So she goes out andgrabs that guy from earlier, the
young blonde guy and hisgirlfriend. So they're the ones
that get picked out of thecrowd, and they just drag them
screaming in terror, all thesepeople standing around watching
what's going on doing anything, but it works. It doesn't feel
(38:06):
like well, somebody would dosomething to stop them. It feels
like and nobody wants to fuckwith these two. So they get
kidnapped. And you find outafter that, that James is a
federal agent who has beenfollowing her specifically for a
long time. And boy, he gets thecrap kicked out of him in this
movie, that scene, the end ofthat scene, he starts to go over
(38:26):
to try to stop and probably dosomething and get hit by a car
and then just stands up andlimps away from a very bad car
wreck. That's he's all right.
But as the movie progresses, hegets more scars and he's got the
neck brace thing going on. Andas they take the two kids to a
(38:47):
holding area, the timeline inthis movie is very hard to
figure out. I'm not quite surehow long after they get hired to
take the fetuses over the borderthey have until they do but it's
sort of seems like they got aslong as they need was they just
kidnap these two and they bringthem back to their place for
keeping first numero uno haveuncomfortable scenes. There's a
(39:10):
very strange rape scenes in thismovie. Okay, where Javier
decides he's going to you know, rape the woman. Rosie gets
character gets very jealous andrapes the guy. Whoa. So this is
going on at the same time. Soit's it's a really bizarre
juxtaposition of scenes andit's like really hard to
(39:33):
swallow.
That works. So of course, afterthat happens, the relationship
hits a momentary rough spotwhere they proceed to beat the
crap out of each other for alittle while. Rosie ends up
winning that battle, and thenthey enjoy each other in a more
and more nice way. Afterit's called for play, you guys.
(39:58):
Yeah, that's definitely A formerthat I guess, so they get ready
to do let's see where Oh,there's, so they get ready to do
the sacrifice place thishorrible game of theirs for
people and they're like, okay, vote for who you want to be
sacrificed, have your votes forthe boy, Rosie votes for the
girl and then they vote for youagainst each other and that
(40:19):
creates a nice little back andforth between them about screw
you What's wrong with you andall this but since he's the
priest and the Auntie grabs awoman and they head out for a
sacrifice, so he he goes outinto this room again which is
filled with people watching.
Like they're gone to church andhe drags this screaming girl out
into the center and talks abouthe's going to kill her. And this
(40:42):
is our sacrifice for the day andeverybody's getting excited and
jumping up and down well thenshows up the man who screwed
over in the bank robberyproceeds to mess up the whole
situation. Of course the keyfour people get away so they
have to figure out well what arewe going to sacrifice now? Cops
are following them and theyrealize that they're meeting up
with the fetus struck and thisis a lot of feed I guess I'm
(41:05):
gonnaI'm imagining like a liquid
container with just one Ohno, no, it is a semi truck with
containers on both sides.
chilled truck with baby fetus, you know, actually look like
(41:29):
probably cry after you've beenborn level fetus lining this
truck like a ballsy decisionto see why this movie was bad.
I'm really I kind of forgot thatwas the topic I like this is a
lot. This is a lot.
Jesus. So the cops show up andthey try to stop them don't go
(41:51):
particularly well. But then thetruck starts to drive away and
fetuses fall off the back. Oh mygod Geldof Ed gets the shit
kicked out of him here as well.
Now they're on the run from thelaw and from Crazy Eyes, who's
the guy who hired them totransport them across the
border?
(42:12):
Because they had some thatdropped off?
I don't know. They had somepeople driving it to them. So
I'm like, why didn't you justuse those guys? I'm going to
tell you guys this scene andthen I'm going to cut it the
fuck out of the final thing.
Because there's a crazy I guys.
Jeez,oh my god, like lucky. I don't.
Yeah, I'm not gonna put that inthe final episode. But to see
(42:40):
you guys get the full picture.
I'll just say unfortunately forthose that might watch this
movie, the crazy guys is kind ofa well, I kind of he is a
pedophile. Nothing graphic isdone, but it is a truly
disturbing way you find out heis so Javier decides he's going
(43:00):
to get revenge on the guys whotried to kill him and hey, Lucha
door. And they end up in Vegas.
Somehow this movie is verycomplicated. But like I said,
the timeline is really hard tofigure out. But they end up
staying and another. I think Ilost one asset entirely. Now.
(43:21):
I'm trying so hard to keep upwith this. All I can see are the
fetuses rolling off the truck.
And you see I'm stuck in thatmoment.
Well, one of the cops does comeup, pick up one of the fetus and
give us a proper burial.
None of this is better.
Thewhole time the Father has been
searching for his daughter who'skidnapped. And she shows up
(43:43):
behind him and he looks aroundOh my god, it's her starts to
walk over. gets hit by a cardies. Like Jesus not a cheery
movie. It has some elements ofhis weird sense of humor. But
no. The storyline is dark isout. In the end, well not in the
(44:04):
end. It's not the end of themovie. But in the end, they just
as far as the couple thatkidnapped they just let them go.
No. After all that, yes, sir.
All that they just go you can gorun. Right. Okay. As they're
running by the ambulance withher father being put in the back
(44:25):
of it. Jesus Christ, this dudeis dark. And from there, you get
to the final and battle scene.
Now just if you want to watchthis movie, I'll just let you
watch it on your own so you canget to get the fun of the last
moments of Rosie of have here.
(44:45):
Who knows? You just have to findout.
Hey, all right.
Do you recommend or notrecommend this very
boy. If you're a big fan ofeither of those actors. Yeah,
yeah. If you're a big fan of hiswork, the directors work you If
you're not familiar with hisdirecting style, don't make this
your first movie you watch fromhim, because you hate him
(45:08):
forever. I would recommendstarting with you know, 30 coins
or the day of the beast day, thebasis so much is a much better
film. Yeah, because it's got thehumor, like lace throughout the
whole thing.
I don't think I canjudge you for that.
I've seen snuff. I've seenCannibal Holocaust. I don't
(45:30):
think I can see this.
One huge thing that I'm kind ofcurious. I want to kind of go
back I don't think the CrazyEyes guy gets punished, which is
a real problem.
It needs to be.
It's based on very differentbook from a novel from 1992
called 59 degrees and raining.
The story of bernita Durangothere's also a comic style
(45:56):
adaptation by Barry Giffords,Dorito Durango, a graphic
thriller from neon lit. Themovie was shot in Arizona,
Nevada, Texas and Mexico. Carlosbardem. Javier his older brother
got badly burnt due to excessivegunpowder and a badly
synchronized explosion caused byspecial effects technician and
(46:17):
another crew member got secondand third degree burns and 80%
of his body Oh my god, no.
Oh my god watchesthe original person slated
direct this movie was mightrecognize this name. If not,
I'll tell you why you might havebiggest Luna director of
(46:37):
anguish. No. Okay. With Madonnaand Javier and Dennis Hopper, in
the leads.
Oh, my.
Johnny Depp was also in line fora little bit as one of the
characters and Ray Liotta. Butonce Luna abandoned the project
(46:58):
they had to with with theexception of Burnham they've
just recast everybody.
Let's see.
Some of the killings are basedon real people I couldn't quite
figure out I don't think thePerdita Durango is based on it
was a real person. But thereferences to the story are
(47:24):
depicted in documentaries, therituals to sondre the true story
behind the matamoras cultkillings so his rituals might
have been based on not thereligion but a bastardized
version of it that a cult leaderdid. The original Spanish
version ran 10 minutes longerthan what was released in the
(47:45):
US. Let's say the film isavailable in the US in two
versions the edited 115 minuteare rated version 121 minute
unrated version. Not anymore.
Sarah severan release the entireDirector's Cut, which I think is
like three or four minuteslonger. The title character
Perdita is make some kind of anappearance in Wild at Heart.
(48:10):
originally played by Isabellawrestling me, okay, and here's a
fun one. And Amazon one starreview.
Oh God,Phil said this movie is so
violent and so evil. It's forthose who love Sex, drugs, etc.
Children must be wary ofthat's an understatement. So he
(48:33):
should have flesh that reviewout a little.
Yeah, yes. So as far as youknow, some of the horrifying,
deeply, deeply nasty films likewe've talked about that before.
This is not fully hit there.
It's not like after watchingSolow or something like that I
felt physically ill. Yeah, thereare moments in this one that I
(48:54):
felt kind of like. But the thetwo leads are so charismatic,
and they're so interesting onscreen. Yeah. If this was played
by a couple really good actorsthat we didn't know, I think it
would have been a very differentfeeling. And it might have been
really, really, really dark. Butsince you know these two actors,
you're comfortable with them.
(49:15):
That relaxes the feeling of thefilm overall. But yeah, it's a
dark one. I see why it wasbanned. It actually was only
banned. Its full version. Ifound a loophole. Because once I
saw that the director was Iwanted to watch this film. I'm
not sure that was the rightidea. Now that I've watched it,
but from the period of 1997 to2006, I believe every film that
(49:40):
was released in America, whichthis one was released in
America, even a shorter one wasbanned in Afghanistan. So that
was its banning. It wasn't. Itwas kind of instead of purely
banned from us and stuff, but itwas banned in Afghanistan.
shocking to me because they'reso progressive.
(50:01):
I'm not going to touch that atall. Um, so my movie, I picked
something out that I wasn't sureif I'd watched or not. I feel
like I saw it in when I waslike, in film school or doing
film studies or something, but Idon't think I was super paying
attention to it or like, I justdidn't have the I don't have the
site. I have now film, theunderstanding or the
(50:25):
appreciation, so I picked the2000 movie, Battle Royale.
(50:58):
ej Madden lawyer.
(52:09):
Do like how you just totallyskipped down I'm not gonna come
in and have like a movie here.
I'm just going. This is anexcellent one. I am very, very
curious to hear what you say onthis.
Yeah, yeah, no, I? Well, firstof all, Rotten Tomatoes, critics
88%. Audience 89% so super highratings out there. budget was
4.5 million. Box Office 30.
Point 6 million.
(52:34):
Is that in Japan? Or is thatwhy?
It should be worldwide? Yeah.
Made in Japan. If you want towatch this movie, be warned. It
is incredibly hard to find itnot dubbed. As you both know,
because I was messaging you in asort of frustrated anxi semi
panic. I tried to watch it onAmazon, dubbed Plex. Dubbed, I
(52:59):
was like I was in the middle oflike downloading it because I
was like, I'm not gonna spendmoney on this thing and then
find out it's dubbed, like Icannot do it. There are a lot of
dubbed versions of it. And Idon't recommend seeing that.
It's just it's not the same. Idid finally find it on Roku.
They had a sub diversion. Sothat was great.
(53:23):
It does surprise me that youdon't own this.
Yeah, I'm actually kind ofsurprised to because I actually
have a lot of like Asian horrorthat I picked up when I lived in
the UK and actually had to lookthrough my list of movies I own
and be like, I don't I guess Idon't have this.
And now I've got three versions.
(53:44):
Yeah, yeah and anchor button.
It's finally in the US it took along time to get here but Anchor
Bay released it I don't know whoelse is released aside from
arrow in the UK. ButI don't know whose versions I
have. I don't have either those.
Yeah,if you have a good one, let me
know. I'd be interested. Sobeware, if you're trying to find
(54:04):
this, if you're trying to streamthis movie, I'm sure if you buy
it, you're fine. Directed byKing fuka Sokka. He's done 68
titles. He actually died in2003. right around the time that
battle. Battle Royale two wasbeing filmed. I think he managed
(54:25):
to make one scene be Takeshibefore he passed away. It's
based on Battle Royale byChristian taka takami as
published in 1999, which I'llget more into later. Music but
masamichi Amato starring. I'mgoing to try my best guys,
(54:47):
Tatsuya Fujiwara, who playsShuja who is in a better way to
and death note from 2006. So heis our male lead. Akki moto
plays Noriko who's been in 75things including battle rail,
too, and she's a voice in thecat returns. Takashi me Kitano
(55:08):
aka Beto Takashi, who's one ofmy favorite actors of all
fucking time. This movie. Oh myGod, he's so good. She's so
good. He plays guitar, Caetanosensei. And when I was looking
through his credits, I realizedlike, a lot of times, he's
(55:30):
either playing a charactercalled Takeshi or Kitano. And I
was like, Is this just like athing with him? He's like, I'm
just gonna play people who havemy name. And we'll just go with
it. Like you guys. Just whatevercharacter you came up with,
forget it. He's been in 68things, including a Senate to
me, which is something that I'veseen, I really liked ghosts in
(55:53):
the show, the outrage. And ofcourse, I mentioned him before
in Johnny anomic. He's also inboiling, boiling point and
Yakuza six, the song of lifevideo game, which I also really
want to play, or Yeah, I reallywant to play. And he actually
originally studied to be anengineer, but was thrown out of
(56:14):
school for his rebelliousbehavior. Yeah, and then he got
into comedy, which is verystrange to think about. I know
he, like start off as acomedian. It's really weird. The
plot of this movie, so westarted off with like a bunch of
intertitles. The future isbleak. As it turns out, at the
dawn of the millennia, societyhas collapsed 15% of
(56:39):
unemployment, 10 million out ofwork. 800,000 students boycotted
school and juvenile crime ratessoar. Adults lost all
confidence. It that's that's allit says is adults lost all
confidence. I was like, tell memore about what's in something
(56:59):
specific, they pass theMillennium educational reform
act, aka the br act. Thisbasically equates to once a
year, they have an annual sortof a event, slash show slash,
they don't get super into thedetails behind this. They give
(57:21):
you hints as to what's going on.
But it seems like a sort of bigbrother ask, aired, or at least
public publicly known aboutcompetition, where a class is
chosen out of Japan and they'resent to a small islands, and
only one can survive, they havethree days to murder each other.
And if they don't end up withjust one person, then they have
(57:45):
special necklaces that go offand they're all beheaded. So you
better go ahead and kill yourclassmates because that's just
how it's going to roll. I don'tknow how this solves the problem
and mass. I had a little problemwith that. I was like how is
this helping crime rate overall, and like getting students to go
to school because that zeroproblem, but that's fine. I'm
(58:06):
not gonna worry about it. So weopen on this empty classroom and
Mr. Caetano beat Takeshi isstanding in there alone young
sweet Noriko, who's our kind offemale lead arrives for class
and apologizes for being late.
She's extremely sweet, very, like cute little Japanese middle
(58:28):
school kid. And Kitano points tothe board where it says written
in Japanese classes taking a dayoff because they want to
sincerely Class B. He looks verysad, and basically without a
word leaves and she's like,Okay, I guess class isn't
happening. He leaves theclassroom and while walking down
(58:50):
the hall, no boom. It was one ofhis students, runs past him with
a knife a switchblade andslashes his kind of ass
basically, the top of his legsslash bottoms, but with a knife
and runs off. Caetano looks sortof at him, and then returns
there's a hallway like MiddleSchool sink, just in there and
(59:12):
he looks everyone's like, okay,go back to class, he starts
washing the blood off his leg, getting back to business. And
Noriko just kind of stands therein shock, stirring years later,
a graduation trip for class B.
So they're all much older now.
And they're I was a littleconfused because I kept kept
(59:35):
finding references and sayingthat they're now all in middle
school, but they look likeseniors in high school. Yeah, it
feels like a seniorcrease thing, where you know,
they're they're supposed to bemiddle schoolers,
but it doesn't feel like it anddidn't quite read like it and I
get the harrowing harrowingconcept of if they are middle
schoolers. But I think it worksjust as well by being high
(59:57):
school like age. Just From avisual standpoint, so they're
all on a bus. They're all mucholder. We're really focused on a
different lead now. So we're inthe world of Shuja, I. He's
there with his best friend Nobu, who we just seen slicing and
(01:00:19):
dicing beat catching a momentago. And his crush is crushing
her ego. So they're all hangingout. I mean, it's definitely
like a very happy, celebratorymood. They're like sharing
cookies. And they're, yeah, they're taking photos, and
they're just goofing off. Andthe teacher in the back
(01:00:41):
obviously loves his students.
He's goofing around with themand playing games with like a
bunch of the girls and back likesome card game. And as they
drive on, they see all thesemilitary vehicles are passing by
seems a little strange. And theygo in this tunnel. And then we
wake up with Shuja and everyoneon the buses passed out. And
except for the driver, and awoman, a strange woman at the
(01:01:04):
front who has a gas mask, theysee that he's woken up, they
walk over the back with a nicepipe, hit him on the head, and
he's out again. So wake upagain, in this sort of strange,
empty classroom with like deskskind of toppled over and just
weird setup, everyone's kind ofjust been thrown in there like
(01:01:26):
chucked in there while they werestill asleep. And the door opens
and the military shows up withMr. Caetano, the Takeshi
basically, kind of walks in,he's like, Hey, everybody, how's
it going? He rememberseveryone's names. He's clearly
like one of those teachers. It'slike, Oh, yeah, I remember this
(01:01:48):
class and pull a lot. He's nowkind of in like a tracksuit. So
it looks like it's switched overto like gym teaching or
something. And he informs themthat they have been selected.
And he is there to kind of givethem the rules and explain to
them the Battle Royale. And ofcourse, he puts in this cassette
video, VHS tape on this, likebig car TV. And it's got this
(01:02:12):
extremely peppy, like Japaneselady in it like crop top with
like a military helmet on goingHello, this is what you're gonna
get up to today. She's tellingthem you have three days to
complete it. And she's veryupbeat. If not, this special
color will explode your head. Soyou better make it count. And
(01:02:36):
then they're each given like abag. And in the bag, they've got
some food and some water and aweapon of some kind. And she's
some of the, if you're lucky, maybe you'll get one of the
guns. And if you're not, youmight get something very
useless. And we start to realizethat this is serious, like very
(01:02:56):
serious when some girls arewhispering, and beat two caches,
like, stop whispering, please.
And they don't incite justthrows a knife into the
forehead, one of the girls, andwe get a countdown, like 41 left
to go. It says the name of thestudent who's dead. And then of
(01:03:18):
course, he sees no blue, thereare no booze acting out and
starts trying to rush him. He'slike, You can't do this to us.
And he slashes no booze, but inthe same way that he was
slashed. And then he's like, Ican just see that you are never
going to change, you're nevergoing to prove you've learned
nothing. And so he's like, oh,great demonstration. So he
presses a button on a littleremote. And no booze necklace,
(01:03:41):
device. lights up. And there's acountdown he's running around
from student to student like ohmy God, help me, help me help
me. And they're just shoving himoff. And of course, Shuja his
best friend looks over at him islike oh, my God and starts to go
towards him. No book splits. Weall know that this is extremely
serious. So the video now countsoff each student's is going to
(01:04:03):
go in order, boy, girl, boy, girl, they get to grab their
stuff, and a bag of randomdecision bag and run out and
start the games. So they theyrun out. And it it just I don't
even know how to describe therest of this film. I'm giving
(01:04:24):
you a lot of details in the leadup because at this point,
there's one reference that couldwork fairly well. Yes.
And of course, Hunger Games.
Yes. It's Hunger Games. So withall of the violence added in?
Yes, absolutely. I mean, if youread Hunger Games, they do have
like a fair amount ofdescription of like some of the
(01:04:45):
content but there's weirdly toomuch stolen from this story from
Hunger Games is a littlefrustrating. So for example, the
no bye bye hunger pig's Sorry, Iwas trying to make that really
clear and somehow messed it upby trying too hard. Fuck you
(01:05:05):
Hunger Games is what I'm tryingto say. Let's make that very
clear. So for example, like theyhave these little maps in this
like plastic sleeve, it's soJapanese, it's so cute on like
these lanyards around their neckjust to make it you know, easy,
they've a little pen so they canmark off sections of the map.
And it's almost like playingbattleship where they're like e
one F, you know, six, andbetween the hours of such and
(01:05:29):
such and such and such, alright, hazard zone. And so they have
to, like, keep up with it andcross off sections and make sure
they're not in that zone, because otherwise their heads
will be exploded. Hunger Gamessteals that exact same concept,
except for they like releasepoison gas because it's unique,
or they have like Tigers orwhatever the hell they have.
(01:05:49):
That game is, or sorry, in thatmovie slash book. Just to give
you a little bit of detail, because I feel like this, this
feeling just needs to be seen tobe understood fully. So we're
following around Noriko andshriya. And they kind of join
forces. And we're seeing a lotof this through their lens as
(01:06:10):
they're trying to survive thechaos. But as soon as the
students like run out, they'vegot to transfer students quote,
unquote, one of whom is apsycho, and one of whom is a
winner of a previous year, justto mix things up and make it
exciting ringers.
Oh my god total ringers. It's sofunny to you, because at 1.1 of
them, gets a bag and runs out.
And then he comes back inChuck's the bag down, grabs
(01:06:34):
another bag, and he said, thisone's mine and runs back out.
Because he didn't like theweapon that was in there. Just
so good. So as soon as theystart running out, of course,
the the psycho kid is like readyto get action going. And one of
the other ones, they're sohaphazard. Like, there's such
kids, they're just like, yeah, yeah, this one kid is like, I
(01:06:56):
have a bow and arrow and starttrying to shoot people, but he
doesn't know what he's doing.
And then the other kids like,no, and like runs at him. And
then he actually ends up withthis Blake thing in his hand
that goes off and kills theother kid. He's like, ah, I
guess I killed somebody. So thenumbers just start like going
(01:07:19):
and we get this like awesomeheadcount that we keep cutting
to. And often the headcount.
It's like a black screen. And itusually has like a quote, from
like, whoever just died. Andsometimes it's the thing they
just said a second ago. Andsometimes it's just something
that they like, wrote in ayearbook, or sent to a friend.
It's these nice little kind ofwrap ups of like, this one's
gone. This is who they were.
(01:07:41):
Occasionally, you get thesereally neat flashbacks from the
dead students that eitherexplain what you just saw, or
what you're going to see, whichI think is especially nice. So
you see, for example, one of thestudents. In fact, our female
lead Noriko was super bullied, and like, was locked in the
bathroom by some girl, somegirls and like, had some really
(01:08:04):
mean things like said to her.
And, like later, she runs intoone of those girls in the woods.
And it's clear that this girl isgoing to try to kill her because
she's not a nice person. But nowhe goes like, Hi, how's it
going? We're friends. Right? Oh,like, I hope you're well. And
it's just it has this great mixof like, upbeat, and sort of
(01:08:24):
funny, but really, reallyharrowing. Murder. Lots of blood
Gore, murderousness. I mean, notas much like you're not seeing
guts flying everywhere. Butyou're seeing enough that you're
like, Whoa, maybe like the McLaren, the
other girls group. They were alltogether. They weren't gonna be
(01:08:47):
able to work together.
Yeah. Well, that was crazy.
Yeah, so Exactly. There's thesegreat vignettes that we're
getting that explain kind of howall these people end up dying.
Like there's a couple ofdifferent people who have lovers
packs, so to you know, jump offa cliff together holding hands
and, and then you get like agroup of girls who are at the
(01:09:09):
lighthouse. So there's all theselittle locations around the
island that people are kind oftaking over. And then the
lighthouse is a group of likefun girl friends, we're working
together, and they're besties.
And they've known each otherforever, and they're gonna make
it through. And then one thinghappens like one small thing,
and then it just becomes afucking bloodbath, and
(01:09:30):
everyone's neuroses and nervesand like hyper like, female like
Middle School, this just comesto a boil, and they're like, you
chewed on that dust? And I neversaid anything. And why would you
do this to me? And this one'slike, calm down, everybody.
We'resupposed to work together. Oh my
god. It's just so great. Andthen you have another like on
(01:09:55):
the other side of the island.
You have some boys who've gottentogether and once a hacker So
he's like trying to hack intothe devices, and they're trying
to build bombs so they can fightback. And you just have all
these little things happeningall over the island. But the way
that it's structured, you'renever lost, you're never
confused. You never feel like, you know, like, Who's this
(01:10:16):
person, I don't care about them, you care about kind of
everybody, even the worst peopleby the end, you really are,
like, invested in in who's gotwhat going on. And then to top
it off, you keep kind offlashing back over to the
military base would be to catchyou. And oh my god, it's so
(01:10:38):
good. He's just like, bored, andlike laying on the couch. And
then he starts this paintingthat has like all the different
students as they're killing eachother, the way they're killing
each other. He kind of it'sreally bad. It's a really badly
done little art portrait thathe's got going on. And then he
gets into like an argument withhis like daughter on the phone
(01:10:58):
at one point and earlier in thebeginning. Our lead Noriko is
giving Shuja and Noby Nobucookies that she made from home,
and he's it's just littledetails, like, he just opens up
the cookies and starts eatingthe, it's just like, these are
good. And it's just hischaracterization is so fucking
(01:11:21):
funny. But he doesn't it's, he'ssaying anything, or it's just
the way that he's presentinghimself. At one point, he just
sort of wanders into the chaoswith like an umbrella to like
check in on a root goo becauselike, she's one of his favorite
students. So he's got like thisumbrella and it's raining, he
walks over, he hands it to herand kind of looks at her and
then walks back out again. He'sin his tracks. He's got his
(01:11:43):
like, hands in his pockets. It'sjust so neat. It's just, it's so
fucking weird. But because ofall of these unique elements
kind of thrown together betweenthe structure, the stories and
the investment we have in thesecharacters. It's and this great
mix of like horror and fun. It'sa fucking awesome film. My my
(01:12:08):
last note about this isbasically just fucking watch it.
Yeah. But I don't want to sayanything really too detailed
about like, what I mean, there'sa lot going on in this movie.
There's a lot of twists andturns and and different people
have different endings from whatyou think are going to be and I
(01:12:28):
just think you got to check itout. The things I like about it
all the stuff I just said plusit's like this mix of like carry
with a strange like sort ofromantic like, I don't know like
romantic II sort of music andshots and design and like
melodrama, but then like meetingApocalypse Now. Just like also
(01:12:53):
classical music and war machinesand like bombs and explode. It's
crazy. Um, it's laid out just insuch a unique and interesting
way that the flow is constant. Ilove the dipping in and out of
memories so we that we learn whopeople are. Like I said Takeshi
is so good. There's a momentwhere he literally just blinks,
(01:13:16):
he blinks twice, one eye for twothings, and it is perfect. It is
perfect acting, buck and openingorchestral music. Like I said,
it reminds me a lot ofApocalypse Now. I also wrote,
it's so much better than thefucking Hunger Games. And fuck
he for stealing so blatantly andpoorly in comparison. It's so
(01:13:40):
gross. I mean, it's gross. Howmuch they steal. Like I'm
irritated as hell with thatlady.
Yeah, she claims that she had noknowledge of Battle Royale but
even if that were true, editorsand publishers had to be aware
of this and there's just alittle too much that is right on
the nose from battle asit's Suzanne Collins. I think
it's too Yeah, there's way toomuch just the fact that like
(01:14:03):
what I just mentioned, the thesort of laid out areas of the
map going that's not somethingyou accidentally copy, when it's
also a battle rail setup. Andthe unique weapons you each get
to grab a weapon at the start.
There's just too much crossover.
I think you're preaching to thechoir.
I know but i don't i want topreach to the choir outside of
(01:14:26):
this room. We're talking toother people out there and I
need them to be angry too. Um,one other thing I want to
mention is Allison borderlandactually feels like a really
solid companion piece to this.
It does have like a lot of nodsand probably a fair amount of
borrowing. But I feel like it'sa really nice idea of kind of an
extended universe of this setup.
(01:14:49):
It's not the same world but itfeels like it almost could be
dislikes, nothing. I wish arrowhad done a US release. That's
what I wrote. Um, little a fewfun bits of trivia for you guys.
In April of 2013, seven yearsafter the film was put on the
index for youth endangeringmedia. The film was confiscated
(01:15:13):
by the local court of fuldaHesse, Germany. This meant that
no one in Germany was allowed tosell the movie and all copies
were to be confiscated by thepolice. Keep late the German
license. Holder appealed theruling, and in October of 2013,
the court revoked its ruling asof February 2017, the movie is
no longer confiscated, nor onthe index, which is when I think
(01:15:37):
they wrote this note. The movieis also banned in South Korea TV
due to graphic violence. I don'tknow if that means you can
somehow get it otherwise youprobably can. But on TV, it's
banned, I guess. Contrary topopular belief, this film was
never banned in the US. Thereare however several conflicting
if possible explanations as towhy it wasn't initially
(01:15:58):
released. Poet refused tolicense the movie for North
America distribution andrejected offers from several
American companies. Thelicensing fee from them was
unusually high for this kind offilm. So smaller, independent
distributors could not afford itand larger distributors refuse
to pay. And after the ColumbineHigh school shootings and 99 new
(01:16:21):
distributor was willing to pickup the film due to the plotline
involving high school studentskilling each other Jesus Christ.
Sorry, it's like Noah's Ark outthere. It's just flooding. Like
your roof is gonna get inches ofwater.
Yep. Wow, good times.
I'm glad I'm glad we're notdone. Anchor Bay recorded in
(01:16:44):
2010 and Battle Royale. the bookby a Christian takami was
rejected and the final round ofa 1997 literary competition. The
Japan Grand Prix horror noveldue to its controversial
content, to think is weird for apoor competition when published
(01:17:06):
in 1999, and went on to become abest seller and one year later
made it into both a manga andfeature film, since Battle
Royale to Cami has not releasedany work. That's interesting.
Yeah, he only ever wrote thatone thing. Many members of the
Japanese Parliament tried to getthe novel banned, but to no
avail of fail. That's a hardword to say when it was
(01:17:29):
released, and they attempted toalso ban it. Both efforts
resulted in the novel and filmbecoming an even more successful
as people bought the book andwent to the movie to see what
the fuss was about. Oh, roughly6000 actors audition for the
film choose which was narroweddown to 800 potential cast
memory members, the finalistswere subjected to a six month
(01:17:53):
period of physical fitnesstraining under supervision of
the director, Kenji Foucault'sfocus aku, who eventually cast
42 out of the 800 none of thecast had any stunt doubles not
even beat to catch you.
She's Yeah, which I found reallysurprising. So you made sure
(01:18:13):
that her just physically fit.
He's like, they'll be fine.
Don't worry about it. Thepainting of all the GLM at the
end anyway. Exactly.
They just have to lay therereally? Knowing how to run over
like rocky classes or slip onthings or end up in swimming in
water. It's fine. The paintingof all the students was actually
(01:18:33):
done by to be Takeshi. Oh,that's funny.
The actress cheeky cat Yama, whoplays Coco, which I didn't
mention there's a zillion peoplein this was cast as gogo, you
buddy and Kill Bill Volume Onebecause Quentin Tarantino was
(01:18:54):
such a huge fan of this film.
The director also started workon a sequel battle rail two and
22,003. before succumbing toprostate cancer, he had only
shot one scene for the follow upmovie with the Takashi when he
died. The film was completed byhis son Kenta Fuca Sokka who
dedicated it to his father, which I have not seen, but is
(01:19:16):
any good?
No. Oh, it is unfortunately notvery good.
See it, then.
That's a bummer. Yeah.
An American remake had been indevelopment, I believe that
actually did come out since theearly 2000s. And producer Ray
Lee reportedly obtained therights in 2006. After release of
The Hunger Games in 2012, Leestated the project had been
(01:19:38):
cancelled because audienceswould see as just a copy of the
games. Most of them wouldn'tknow that battle royale came
first. It's unfair, but that'sreality. 10 years after it's
released, the film was formattedto 3d. There you go.
I love this movie. It is it isweird. And I think that's why I
(01:19:59):
love it because it's certainlyNot something that you should
feel good about watching a bunchof school kids murdering each
other.
Yeah, it is. So I don't know, Ithink my expectations were like,
it's gonna be some crazybloodbath, like over the top
crazy Asian horror film. Andit's like, just fun and like
(01:20:19):
well written. Well cast I justis a neat, unique work. And I
think it's one of my favoritefilms now.
a testament to all those youngactors too, because you're
looking at a cast of, you know,25 kids all with black hair all
in school uniforms all about thesame age. Yeah. And you're able
(01:20:40):
to tell the difference betweenall Oh, completely all have
really interesting and uniquepersonalities.
Absolutely. Absolutely. And likea couple of them change
clothing, but not very many.
Most of them remain in theirschool uniforms. So it's, it is
just, I think it also helps.
There's so much melodrama that'sbeing played into Yeah, that's
like really the smartdirectorial way to go with this.
(01:21:02):
If you have a bunch of youngactors, just like lean into it
and be like, yeah, just screamjust scream like crazy. It'll be
fine.
There is a blu ray available.
collection. It's on 22 bucks, the first two movies plus a
bunch of extras, but you know, you can just use the one as a
coaster.
Eric, were you able to find asubtitled version of that on
(01:21:23):
prime? Yeah. Was What?
Are you sure it wasn't the 2012version? That's the 2012
version.
Dude. What do you mean 2012?
That wasn't remade, right.
remastered and released on 2012.
Oh, I looked closer at the Iknow, when I was posting I
didn't know what they look like.
(01:21:43):
Okay, because I kept findingthat and being like, Well,
great. I don't want to watchsome dumb American remake.
Reboot. I thought it was areboot. I didn't. Okay, that
explains that.
Now I've read. I've got thenovel. I've got the manga.
involved to end, the bestversion of the story is probably
the manga. But that's like 25volumes long. It's huge. Yo,
(01:22:07):
every character Yeah, massivebackground and all that. It's
got more detailed than thenovel. Wow. But yeah, this is a
hell of a movie. I think it'sfantastic. Hunger Games didn't
bother me too much just becauseI said, Okay, whatever. I know.
And I've already seen, what, 12years 15 years earlier,
whatever. It's like if somebodyhad to rip it off at some point,
(01:22:28):
I guess. You read nice if it wasa little better, ripped off.
I was just frustrated. Like, Iread Hunger Games. I watched all
of them like I'm I love to. Justthat's a special place in my
heart. But I just I don't know,I felt I felt cheated. I felt
cheated. When I watched this. Ifelt like I was lied to because
(01:22:49):
I felt like oh yeah, likethey're, they're ripping off the
concept of Battle Royale andthey're everywhere. And then I
was like, Oh my god, they reallyshe's really plagiarizing some
shit here. And yeah, okay, bythe third book. There's a few
more details you got in there, but not enough for me to feel
good about it.
The world around was fairlyoriginal, but the battle itself
(01:23:10):
was just like Jesus. BattleRoyale with none of the
violence. Right?
It's like you just talk aboutthe areas in? I don't know.
Yeah, the world like you saidsome more. splish
splash out. Alright, good choicefor NASA. Hell of a movie.
Yeah, so Kelly, I'm stoked tohear what you picked out.
I picked out the winner.
(01:23:31):
I don't know how you definewinner.
I might have cheated a littlebit but I can defend that. All
right. I picked from 1978 theStar Wars Holiday Special. Hey,
CBSwhat's coming on Friday blast
off to a galaxy far far away.
It's the Star Wars HolidaySpecial story. Oh, and your Star
Wars favorites. Will Chewbaccaget home to his planet in time

When on flying high. The girlsput it on and take it off. I
don't think you can get muchsleep tonight. Join us for a far

(01:24:15):
Okay. budget of $1 million.
You know that's played on TV,right?
Yes.
Just not really that much budgetalumnae. Wow. None because
Rotten Tomatoes. The criticshave it at 27%. The audience has
it at 19% solid audiences. Itwas directed by Steve binder,

(01:25:45):
Jefferson Starship. Wow. Oh mygod. Oh, this is a this is a
variety shows special wrapped upin Star Wars. Bullshit.
I have never seen this so I'mvery excited to hear you.
Well, it is a very tough movieto find. There's a reason you've
(01:26:09):
never seen it. So it starts withChewbacca and Han Solo in the in
the Millennium Falcon. In Ishould say in footage from Star
escaping from to Imperial StarDestroyers. And they are running
late on the way to choose homeand family on Kashi. Han lets
(01:26:32):
him know that he won't let himdown and they'll make it in time
for the life Day celebration, which is basically Thanksgiving.
Then we go to Kashi where wemeet chewies family, his wife
mala who looks just like him,but with softer eyes. His son
lumpy, who is an annoying littlefucker who can't even be
(01:26:52):
bothered to do the dishes. Andhis father or father in law,
itchy, if you can believe it.
Who is apparently the grandpaSimpson on bookies. And mala
calls up the screen on theirlittle counter there and she
gets Luke Skywalker on thescreen. Who doesn't even look
like himself from all the makeuphe has to hide the plastic
(01:27:14):
surgery because this was rightafter he had that near fatal car
crash. They they write that offin the beginning of Empire
Strikes Back by having an attackby the Wookie. And he gets his
face clawed off and then we seeand that's why he looks so
different between A New Hope andEmpire Strikes Back. Let me just
also say this, the opening sceneof this is the wookies talking
(01:27:36):
to each other in Wookie. Speakokay for 1009 minutes, and no
subtitles. Wait. So it's justwrong. and shit like this. You
have no idea what the fuck isgoing on. Except that you can
tell that mala asked lumpy to dothe dishes and he was playing
(01:28:00):
with his wooden x wing fighterinstead. And so she yelled at
me.
Oh my god.
It's almost unbearable.
Sounds really bad.
So, mala has called up Luke tosee if he served from chewy and
(01:28:22):
he kind of blows her off becausehe's working on an engine with r
two. And you are getting varietylevel humor in these scenes.
Like he's trying to talk to herbut our two keeps doing
something on the engine andsteam keeps shooting up into his
face. Stuff like this. It's ait's a mere laugh track. No, but
(01:28:47):
that might help.
I don't know. I don't know. CUTTO footage from Star Wars, Darth
Vader. And he's ordering asystem wide search for the
rebels. And this is James EarlJones giving new dialogue but
(01:29:09):
using footage from the film,Darth is on the hunt for the
rebels still remember, there'sbeen nothing but the first Star
Wars movie when this comes out.
So he's on the hunt for therebels. We're not we're not
exactly told where he is. Butit's footage of him walking on
the Death Star. So I guess we'rejust supposed to believe that
(01:29:30):
all of their stuff looks likethat. Because they blow up the
desktop at the end. But it comesback to choose family mala
contacts, a trader on theplanet, Sean Dan, who is dealing
with an imperial trooper and hegives her kind of code through
the screen to let her know thathe knows Julie is on his way but
(01:29:55):
he's been detained but he'ssaying this in kind of action.
cryptic way so that the Imperialofficer he's talking to doesn't
understand is it's so heavyhanded that anybody there would
be like, is this code forsomething?
I'm just assuming this is allcanon, right? Yeah.
(01:30:15):
So so he tells her, you know, relax, get the food ready for
life day and all this stuff. Soremember, this is a variety
show. So mama pulls up on thescreen basically a Julia Child's
Android played by Harvey Kormanwho teaches her how to make a a
(01:30:38):
new plate it is called Let mesee I got it here bantha
surprise Oh my god.
Oh my god in a bit that has beenthe banjo was surprised here. Oh
laughs then Sean Dan, the traderwho is played by art Carney he
arrives at the Wookie householdnow we have seen this household
(01:30:59):
as a painting by the great who'sthe artist that did all the
concept art for I know who youmean, but I don't know man. what
his name is escaping me. I'msure that I can see the front of
his book. Yeah, everybody isyelling at me right now. They're
listening. But we've seen theirhome and their home is this.
These gigantic elaborate treehouses and the trees on Kashi
(01:31:21):
are hundreds of feet tall, sothey're way up in the air. So he
shows up. Yes. Ralph McQuarrie.
Thank you. He shows up and he'sgot what when I did my research,
it's called a mind evaporator.
Which gives to itchy andVanessa, you you have to watch
(01:31:42):
this for this soft porn thatgets put on that he is no that's
what makes it grow. Sir. It's ahuman woman. It's Diane Carroll.
And I'm not so I'm not sure whyhe's so attracted to her but it
is clearly in the species beastreality. Oh my god. Then the
(01:32:08):
while he's while he's jerkingoff to that, that view screen
pops up and mala turns it on.
And it is a clearly coked upPrincess Leia. And see threepio
asking if she she's there towish them a happy life. David
asking, you know, can you putHana chewy on? Because mala
(01:32:29):
starts talking to her?
Nah,I'm not sure I understand. Can
you put a Hana Chilean? Well, shouldn't it just be Han? Well,
you'd understand if chewy wastranslating it for you? It makes
no fucking sense. And by theway, Princess Leia? She in her
bikini? No, no, she's in herwhite with the ball and all that
(01:32:50):
stuff. She is admitted that shewas super coked up while this
was going on.
I mean, Carrie Fisher has beenvery upfront about
Yeah. So Leah instead speaks toSean, Sean Dan, our attorney who
comforts her by revealing thathe is in the Alliance. But what
(01:33:10):
else would you say if you hadthe leader of the Alliance on a
screen even if you were animperial soldier but oh, no, no,
I'm cool. I'm with the Alliance.
Still. She is smoking hot. Soof course, kept a real fun
Yeah. So these the Imperialofficers show up and they
inspect the home and questionthe whereabouts of the absent
(01:33:31):
Wilkie because they've got theconsensus there and they're
like, all right, they'resupposed to be a male Wookie
here. Where is he? To distractthem? Sean plays a hologram of
Jefferson Starship.
Yeah.
Performing a song I don't knowwhen you're gonna lose me but I
feel like I don't know if it wasalready happening. I
(01:33:52):
feel so bad about my pickanymore. Yeah. What song does
Jefferson Starshipit's a side song No, I'm I'm
guessing that they I actuallylike the song. But I'm guessing
the only reason they weregrabbed for this is because they
have starship in their name ofcourse. So. Meanwhile, the
imperious or the Imperialstormtroopers are looking for
(01:34:16):
like any sign of rebel influencein this big tree house and
everything. Oh, it's making theson very uncomfortable. So to
calm her son down, mala puts onthe screen and animated story.
Now this is the gem of thisshow. And it is the only reason
to whatever search this out.
(01:34:38):
There is a 10 minute animatedsequence in it. It shows a
recent adventure of Chewie andHan in pursuit of some kind of
mythical talisman doesn't reallymatter. It is the first
appearance of Boba Fett and Ijust fucking love it. It's very
weird. And it is done by thesame animation studio that did
that droids series I was tellingyou guys about so it's really,
(01:35:04):
it's really a lot of fun. Afterthat, for some reason we cut to
a broadcast of life on tattooween where the cantina bartender
who was played by Bea Arthur hastrouble getting the patrons to
go home because the Imperialshave announced a curfew and so
she basically sings get out nowsong
(01:35:25):
Oh my god. This is why I want towatch this
to the tune of the cantina songslowed way.
But you guys have heard thetheme song for mod right? Oh,
yes. Okay, I just want to makeclear. And then there's my
(01:35:51):
back on cache stormtroopersleave, but they leave one
trooper there to wait for themissing male Wookie that's
supposed to be in the house, which is when Han and Chewie
show up and toss him over therailing to the ground several
100 people Oh, sure. And we getthe Wilhelm scream when it goes
over which is then we get onefinal scene of all the bookies
raising candles and they're inred robes. They're all in one
(01:36:14):
big room and Princess Leia issinging the life day song to the
main theme of Star Wars.
Oh my god.
So you're saying like mash. TheStar Wars theme has lyrics to
that. Oh my god. So this, thisis an absolute shit show. And I
(01:36:39):
will now make my case for whythis count was a bad film. Yeah.
So well, outlining the originalStar Wars and planning its
potential sequels, George Lucasimagined a film just about the
wookies and nothing else. Afterthe original film success its
cast had made a few appearanceson TV variety shows. According
(01:37:00):
to Charles Lippincott, who wasthe head of marketing of the
Star Wars Corporation. CBSbrought the idea of doing a TV
special to him and Lucas. Lucaswas busy moving his production
company to a new location whichwas not heavily involved in the
special. The Lucas isuncredited, his name shows up
nowhere on this. It was his ideato build the narrative around
(01:37:22):
Chewbacca his family. Accordingto Mark Hamill, George Lucas
devise this one off televisionspecial to keep the unexpected
success of the original 1937release fresh and fans minds and
keep the merchandise selling inshops. concerned that the Star
Wars brand would quickly beforgotten. When Lucas watched
(01:37:45):
the final production, he washorrified and felt it could
easily be seen as an attempt ata cheap Cashin. While he was too
late to stop the broadcast inthe US and Canada he was able to
prevent the show from beingaired in most of their
territories were Star Wars hadbeen a massive success. So he
couldn't stop it from beingshown in the US and Canada but
(01:38:07):
everywhere else he was able toget lucky. So the special was
broadcast in its entirety in theUnited States only once. On
Friday, November 17 1978, theweek before Thanksgiving, and
broadcast on the Canadiantelevision networks CTV
I am I'm really surprisedbecause for some reason I always
(01:38:29):
thought it was a Christmasspecial.
I think people think that but itactually aired the week before
Thanksgiving. Yeah. And thethemes when you're watching it
are about family and stuff likethat. It's nothing about gifts.
So Wilkie Jesus is kind ofinteresting. The holiday special
is the first time that JamesEarl Jones was credited with
(01:38:50):
performing the voice of DarthVader, if you saw Star Wars.
They never mentioned him in thatin those original credits.
Why do you think that like theguy who plays Darth Vader didn't
realize? Look, I'm so credit,I don't know. But it was David
Prowse as Darth Vader and that'sall he knew. So whenever you got
to hear an interview with himand his Welsh accent, we're just
like, What? Why quite an actingjob.
(01:39:16):
He must be amazing.
So the next time would be duringthe end credits of the Empire
Strikes Back the James L. Joneswas credited. The Cantina
sequence took an entire day toshoot because it is basically
the cantina with all of thealiens and everything. They used
all the same. masks and stuff.
The actors and alien costumesbegan to pass out due to lack of
(01:39:37):
oxygen so oxygen tanks wereprovided for them to use between
takes beautiful oscillation. Doyou guys know who Bruce Vilanch
is? Have you seen him? He knowshe looks like he looks like a
real life Muppet. He's giganticand his just frizzy hair. Oh.
Actors been in dozens of Nothundreds of things. Well, he's
(01:40:01):
not an actor. He has shown up ashimself in things but he has
admitted that he was usingcocaine heavily while he
was involved either everybodywas doing Coke,
everyone a George Lucas famouslytried and failed to buy up all
of the master copies to makesure that it was never broadcast
again, filed the special andnever been released on video,
(01:40:25):
but bootleg videos circulatedfor years and the show can be
seen now on like YouTube, whichis how I watched it. George
Lucas remarked at an Australianconvention. If I had the time
and a sledgehammer, I wouldtrack down every bootleg copy of
that program, smash it.
Oh my god, he has no sense ofhumor about his work.
(01:40:46):
According to Carrie Fisher,George Lucas gave her a copy of
the special as a gift forrecording the DVD commentary for
Star Wars, New Hope. She claimsthat she played it at parties
when she wanted her guests toleave.
That's so good.
And finally, it is listed in thebook. What were they thinking?
(01:41:07):
The 100 dumbest events intelevision history are in the
number one spot Oh, titled, Theworst two hours of television
ever. Wow. And here's the kickerthe coda, I am hearing that a
restored completely restoredversion of the cartoon segment
will begin airing on Disneyplus. That's cool. So the only
(01:41:32):
reason to watch it is going tobe available to everybody in a
very nice looking versionshortly.
I mean, little pieces of it. Ithink I would find really fun to
look at but I don't think I'dwant to watch that whole thing.
It's it's something to you know, either get stoned and watch or
something like that. Because ifyou're just watching it, it's
the most mind numbing, stupid.
Boring, right? I mean, thefucking nine minutes of just
(01:41:57):
wookies it sounds roaring ateach other's is like,
I can't even handle watchingdinosaurs and at least there's
like dinosaur puppets here. Ican't do it. It's not funny,
dude.
This is a this is a thing towatch as Oh, what the fuck were
(01:42:17):
they thinking? And can youbelieve that? You know, they'd
had no idea how to kind ofhandle Star Wars and because
variety shows where you know, the staple of of 70s television
they decided well a Star Warsvariety special with Bill. Well,
right. I mean, I remember seeingthe Donny Marie show when it was
(01:42:38):
the Star Wars special and youknow shit like that
they have playing Han Solo andthat wasn't somebody big i was i
thought was country singerturned actor big in the 70s 80s
I don't remember but I think yousent me the link for that. Not
too long ago, didn't you?
Yeah, cuz I'd never seen it. Inever heard about it going. Oh,
what is this? But yeah, it'sgonna drive me nuts. I piggies
(01:43:02):
in convoy.
Only country singer Ican think of Jerry Reed. No, no,
that was athat was Jerry Reed was smoking
the bandit.
Okay. All I remember having an Ididn't watch the link is that
Marie with her hair and the bunsand everything look just like
Princess Leia. Yeah, that's socool. I
(01:43:22):
think it's Kris Kristofferson.
Oh, wow, when Han Solo in that, but I'm not
positive. Kris Kristofferson wasa country singer. Oh, yeah. I
530 536 that's his wholelisting, not just his acting 55
acting credits, though.
Wow. Yeah. So go forth andconsume it is on YouTube.
(01:43:48):
I think you're gonna need a lotof cocaine first.
No problem. I got you.
Excellent. Okay, that brings usto the segment that I like to
call. It's your turn, Vanessa.
Yeah, I'msuper excited. Actually, um, I
have this kind of ongoing listof different things to put
forward. And this was a hiddengem that I hadn't managed to use
(01:44:12):
yet. So I am going to suggestthat for next week, we watch
Brave New World, something wheresomeone discovers a new planet
dimension or reality.
Okay, I like this. I feel likewe're gonna get into more sci fi
territory with this, Ithink. Yeah, I think that that's
(01:44:33):
definitely an area that it canhead to although, you know,
event horizon. Sure. Sure. Yeah.
So I think the thing that kindof explains that one Well, I
meant as an example. I think theinspiration slightly came from
things like sliders and shadowso yeah, go forth like I'm the
