Unknown (00:03):
Oh, sorry, did I break
your concentration?
Somewhere between science andsuperstition?
To show youStrange Aeons. We're gonna
(00:28):
Strange Aeons radio. That's Ericover there. Hey, Lou. That's
Vanessa over there. Hello. Heyguys, I read a very interesting
article and I want your takes onthis. Oh, Netflix has paid $469
millionfor two exclusive knives out
sequels only be shown on Netflixwill not go to the theaters. So
(00:53):
this is just I saw the headline,I didn't read the article, this
is just a distribution purchase.
Yes. And a 100 million of thatgoes directly to Ryan Johnson.
100 million goes directly toDaniel Craig. Oh.
(01:14):
So this sounds insane.
You start thinking, Wait asecond, these guys are saying,
No, it's not going to thetheater. If you want to watch
this movie, you got to sign upfor Netflix. And it's kind of
like they are they are basicallyplaying on a different level.
Now. I wonder if that's part ofwhy they're also planning on
(01:35):
starting to crack down on thestealing data. Sharing of
password. Yeah, yeah. So arethey gonna care about that now?
Yeah, yeah, apparently they'reWow, they're working on figuring
out how to do that.
I got I got shuffled to get that$11 a month out of you now.
damage. Finally canceled my DVDNetflix. Oh, good, too.
(02:03):
Is that Do you think that's aresponse to HBO? Or? I think
exclusivity? I don't think it'sa response to anything. I think
it's a it's a big fuck you totheaters. I think they're saying
so, you know, certainly knivesout. What do you think the
budget of that was? Under 100million? I would think
(02:24):
even with the star power in it.
And then it It made a fairamount of money? Well, yes,
these guys are going in andsaying, you know, what's it
going to cost? So that you don'tget to look at any of that
money? Whatever. Yeah, get outof this we get out of it, which
I assume they think is going tobe subscriptions.
(02:45):
It's weird, because I feel likefor the longest time, I was
reading these articles about howNetflix is on the verge of going
under. And their model doesn'tactually allow them to profit
and all kinds of stuff. But thenstuff like this happened. And
it's like, well, I guess justhaving every person on the
planet giving them $11 everymonth probably does end up being
(03:07):
able to a lot of money. Well, Imean, yeah, I've always suspect
on those because I mean, theaterwas gonna die when TV was
started, or when radio gonna goaway because of movies or tv or
whatever. Yeah. And everybody isalways citing the Doom of
something. The only people whokind of got it right, were
people that say video rentalstores are in trouble. Right?
That one actually did come true.
I think that they are so tighton how they release how they
(03:31):
make money. Yeah, all of themajor streamers are not just HBO
or Netflix, it's all of them. Sorealistically, who's ever
writing those articles is makinga lot of shit up based on
assumptions. And well, I heardfrom this one sort of reliable
source. Did you get anyconfirmation from any what will
(03:53):
know? Oh, okay. Your articlesprobably not based on my it's
fascinating. I just wish wecould understand what because
we've never really understoodhow VHS made a lot of made their
money to the there are placesthat no, but publicly just
released that stuff streamingthe same way. Exactly. like
they've kept all that so closeto the chest where like, even
(04:15):
their demographics, even thenumber of subscriptions, they
don't release that stuff. Also,a lot of these things, you know,
so HBO Max is Warner Brothers, right? That that money can be
hidden and it can be it can betaken from other places and a
place that is making a ton ofmoney can just be used as Okay,
well, we're just going to take aloss on HBO Max, because we know
(04:39):
eventually we won't be and wecan afford to Yeah, you know,
with Netflix, it's weird becauseI remember, you know, on good
authority we added last yearthat Apple was going to be
buying right flicks. That neverhappened. And we were hearing
out Netflix was you know, running out of money and
everything. WellSpending $500 million on two
(05:00):
films doesn't sound like they'rerunning out of money. No, it
doesn't. And just knowing again, like just thinking about the
fact that I don't know anybodywho does not have a Netflix
subscription. And that includeseveryone I know, in Europe. So
it's it just it doesn't makesense to think that that company
is going to go under, even ifthey're doing Stranger Things.
(05:20):
And even if they're buying upproperties and putting out new
things, it the money's justconstantly coming into them. So
trying to think what's a Netflixsubscription now? 14? Yeah, it
just went up Actually, yeah, Ithink it's like 14 or 15, what
they need to do is they need togo look, or we're canceling
multiple accounts on thesethings about we're dropping our
(05:42):
price to 899. And I think that a$9 thing is a lot easier for
people to swallow than a $15thing. So you might, you might
get back all those people whonow can't borrow somebody's
password. Oh, right. Right, thenmake you know, make it up. That
is that is very, very true.
(06:02):
Because I was gonna say, I thinkthat the way they up their cost
is really smart. Becauseeverybody's been paying, you
know, 899 or, you know, Levinbucks or whatever for the past
four years. And then all of asudden, one day you log in and
it says we're upping the cost.
Press OK to continue to watchthe thing you are already have
it as a huge part of your homeand your, you know, routine and
(06:25):
everything. And it's like, well, why wouldn't I press? Ok. Yeah,
especially. It's only $1 more amonth, you know, but we've been
doing it long enough that Iremember when it was 899. And I
was 15. I cut cable and I haveno regrets. Yeah, yeah, no one.
Speaking of all that stuff, also. This we are not. We're not
sponsored by shutter but rightnow is a great time to get on
(06:50):
shutter because they don'tmatter knocked it down to half
price for six months. Like $3female that to me sounds like a
company that are they okay. Idon't know. But we were just
talking about, you know, off.
Off Mike's about like the ValLewton collection is now on
shutter shutters owned by AMC.
Correct. I believe shutter ison.
(07:14):
AMC is one of the biggesttheater. I think it's AMC.
That's probably a problem, thentheater chains aren't doing real
well. Right. But they are thebiggest one struggling out
there. I only said I thought itwas Amazon because I see now
that season one of creep showwhich was a shutter exclusive is
available on prime. They've hada long term relationship with
(07:36):
prime because used to be able toor you still can subscribe to a
shutter version on Amazon. Andthat's been in existence since
that'show I subscribed. I've been a
little curious if if it's thefull shutter on it's not. It's
not. So I've had a couple oftimes where I've tried to find
content and it's not and it'snot nearly as good because the
layouts isn't that cheap orsomething. And it is cheaper. I
(07:58):
think it's five bucks on Yeah.
Or it was I guess now it's notbecause if it's three bucks a
month to subscribe, you might aswell just get the full thing.
Yeah, I like the actual letter alot more because you also get
the streaming TV it's like threeTV channels or whatever. But you
just come across moreinteresting content that way.
(08:19):
Yeah, yeah.
Well, speaking of all thatstuff, hey, Vanessa, remember?
Are you kind of on a falconremember when you were saying
how much you like john Walkerand he's just a good guy
deserves tofollow the comic books is what
I'm behind. Don't worry aboutDon't worry about it. I won't
get into any spoilers but I didwatch that and go while but is
(08:40):
is watching. I am and I waspretty into it. I was pretty
excited. Actually, I think therewas a good built building and a
good path for the character. Itwas it felt very natural. And I
like togo ahead and when I find certain
kinds of things spoilers bug me.
(09:01):
Marvel is not one of them was anintense episode. Eric, can you
you know the arc of thischaracter back ready? He is
falling. Yeah, exactly. Sowithin that arc, just the fact
that they don't just jump intoit, but they justify it. You're
showing you the conversationsthat he's having the feelings,
he's having the moments, thethings he's literally seeing
(09:24):
that cause him to decide to dothe things he does. I was like,
Oh my god, they justified it forWow, they actually did that.
That's interesting. It thatentire show is
a great practice on everythingis is good from a certain point
(09:44):
of Yeah. You it's really hard toeven fall ximo Sema, like,
yeah, there was there was apoint where I knew exactly what
zema was going to do. And theperson that was watching the
show with was like, Oh my gosh,is he going
To x and I was like nope. And Iknow
not going to no way in hell ishe going to you? Also, I don't
(10:07):
know if you guys caught thisthere is a two hour long dancing
ximo like I actually did seethat popped up on my YouTube
thing or something yeah, put outby Marvel it's all of the extra
is not just Oh, so it's not arepetition just a rupee it's not
it's it's not it is a repeat butit's a lot more content that
(10:27):
show me minutes all the likeouttake versions of him doing
the thing like dancing. So it'sjust him dancing from different
angles and it feels really fluidbecause it's like, it's probably
about three to four uniqueminutes worth of content of him
dancing. Oh, that's great.
That's hilarious. Good. I waslike, Damn Marvel. I was like,
What genius did this oh my god,it's Marvel. Marvel did this.
Okay, there you go. That's sortof like not a studio doing the
(10:49):
thing. But john cena kind ofrepresenting himself well, where
he's talking about his characterand the new Suicide Squad. He
was eating something I don'tremember for that donut or
burrito or something. But hedecided his character should eat
the whole thing like in a biter.
So he ended up having to do 30days of eating things. Like I've
(11:11):
never been so sick in my life.
Have you know that dude ain'tout there eating? No. A lot, but
not the way we eat. Oh my god.
Um, yes. So I actually caughtsomething on Netflix. Speaking
of which, which was, had a lotof heart.
I was surprised becauseI got my second vaccine. And I
(11:33):
wasn't going to tell talk toanybody about it, or you know,
make a big deal out of it. But Iwas so sick, or so unbelievably
sick. I've never been so sick inmy life. And I was like, I just
need to watch something. So Ithrew on Julian, the phantoms.
Which is, it's like a youngadult,
(11:58):
like teen show about a girl whoher mom has died and she doesn't
want to sing anymore. Becausethat was like the thing that
like her mom was a musician andshe's just doesn't feel like
getting into it. And she's inher mom's studio puts on an old
CD. And all of a sudden, thisghost band appears. Oh, called
from the 90s called sunsetcurve. They had all died by
(12:21):
eating a bad hot dog.
And they are equally surprisedto find themselves there. And
the rest of the world can seethem but only when they play as
her kind of like band. Wow.
Yeah. So she slowly starts todip more and more into playing
music again and doingperformances for her high school
(12:42):
and whatever, whatever. And likethey just like pop in out of
nowhere, every time she'splaying. And this music is
really good. It's stupidly good.
Um, the show is actually basedoff of a Brazilian show of
Brazilian property. It's got oneseason out right now it's just
really fun. It's got like someghost like drama going on in it
(13:06):
too. And the characters kind ofgo in unexpected ways. There's a
really neat like gay characterin it that I just absolutely
adore it just I don't know it'sit's very representative in a
lot of ways. Julie and thePhantom Julian the phantoms. Oh
my god, it made me so happy. Ijust had so much heart let's put
a little love in your heart alittle hard you love all of it.
(13:28):
Got to get there got to getthrough that. I on the other
hand, had a less fun experiencewatching something that I think
you call doing my homework orsome Oh, I watched about an
hour. We'll see if I everactually finish it have Josh
Sweden's Justice League. Yeah,no wonder people are so excited
about Zack. I told you Good God,right from the opening song.
(13:50):
Yeah, like wow, this is crap.
And you know, for a guy who puttogether some pretty cool music
and Buffy to start off likethat. Wow. Just has lasted in so
many ways. And we talked about Ithink we talked about but the
Galco refusing to do the partwhere flash lands on her. Yes.
So I'm watching that. And yeah,it's very obviously Yes. Her
(14:13):
face completely turned away fromcamera. Like there it is so bad.
Now you can understand myenthusiasm, right after watching
something like that to thenwatch a film that makes sense on
any level. I was very excited.
It is.
(14:35):
Tell is never gonna like respectto be a good look. No, I've lost
it. Yes. Saying that. The ZackSnyder version is better is like
saying, you know, oh,my partner only pissed on me
while we were sleeping lastnight instead of shitting on me.
That's pretty good.
You can watch that real quick.
You don't have to get a sponge.
(14:56):
Neither of them are what youwould call good as my
It's hard. Like I said, I haveno perspective. I can't tell you
I have no idea if it's good ornot. I just know I enjoyed it
significantly more well on quickpace, then I'll just toss out
one that was worth watching thatyou'd recommend that floored me
was come true. So good. I was soglad you texted me like, right
(15:17):
after. Like, this is so good.
It's like okay, now. I got it. Igotta check it out. Yeah, you
should. I suggested that to MikeDavis of the Lovecraft easing,
and I thought he liked it. Butthen publicly, he told me I owed
him eight bucks for rent.
Oh, shit. I thought it wasgreat. So you know what your
mileage may vary? Yeah, it'sit's esoteric enough, I guess
(15:39):
that you don't buy into thebiker talking about this
episode, if you don't buy intothe magic? I sure did. Well, and
also, as a Vanessa, you wouldn'tunderstand this. But as I get
into the September of my years,I was fine.
Alright, as I get into theNovember of,
(15:59):
I find that my taste has movedfrom a lot of the stuff that I
used to like, as a youngerperson to just weird.
Or it's kind of like I I want myhorror to be weirder than this.
Otherwise, I'm getting what Ipredictable. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I
(16:20):
understand that makes so Iwouldn't even call that a horror
film, which is just really, Imean, it's got some query
elements in it, but I justthought it was really weird and
kind of original. Yeah,definitely.
Well, something that wasoriginal in its first
incarnation, and now as ananimated series, invincible is
(16:41):
disappointing me more. Wow, Ifound myself watching the last
two episodes through my phonealmost. Well, I like
Oh, I see. Okay. Yeah, what, they really missed the whole
point of the series, which waskind of showing you how, but all
the superhero life is you've gotyour wife at home, who's a real
(17:04):
estate agent, your son isstarting to come up with powers
and all this stuff. And theyreally made a big deal of the
fact that, you know, in thecomics, Nolan would be gone for
weeks. And the family wasn't tooworried about it, because he was
always gone for a week savingthe universe or out in space or
doing something. And they wouldtouch on these moments that that
(17:25):
felt really real like Cecil, whowould use the transporter, when
he really shouldn't have beenbecause the taxpayers paid $2
billion. Every time you use thetransporter, oh, he would just
you know, zap into people'shouses to talk to them. And then
zap. And it was, you know, nowit's just a cool piece of tech
they have in this series, andI'm like, you guys are kind of
(17:46):
missing what made this comicbook feel so unique. Well,
that's kind of like could make acomparison to another show that
had patients and this onedidn't. The Exorcist that was
revealed in Episode Five of theexorcise that turns it from kind
of a neat show, to a fuckingamazing show must watch TV. And
(18:06):
if this had done that, like thewriter, the original story is
strong enough and the voiceactor certainly are talented
enough that they could have justtold this as a family drama,
which it is for a long time, youknow, family drama of
superheroes, and then had thatreveal 567 maybe even as season
(18:28):
n is the center Yeah. And itwould have been unbelievable,
because it we by the time thathe kills everybody. You don't
give a shit about anybody yet.
Yeah. But in the comic, you gavea shit about everybody by the
time he goes rogue. And all thepeople he killed had great
stories that were it says like,God dammit, it's now I will mess
I will say there's one thing Ilike that they're doing this
(18:49):
that is not in the comic, andthat is his wife is starting to
suspect and she's doing her owninvestigation and you're you're
starting to get worried she'llget caught. Yeah. And that's
new. Yeah, Sandro's character isdefinitely the best one of the
best. Because I know RobertKirkman is got this whole thing
like with the walking dead, hedoesn't want to just retell the
story. It's like, that's fine.
(19:11):
You can alter your story and dosomething. But when you've got
that, yeah, let's alter it and,you know, maybe make it more
funny or something like just butyeah, it's a really big problem
with that altering things. I getit, you're an artist. And you
don't want to just do the samething over and over. But you're
taking your comic book, whichmight be a big hit in the comic
(19:33):
book. But when you put that infront of TV screens, and it
becomes a hit show those peopleyou're reaching such a wider
audience. And if you're changingsomething, you got to be careful
that you're not changing it forthe worse, not making it a
weaker moment, just because youwant to make it a different
moment, right? Yeah. Yeah. As Icertainly that's certainly what
happened, which is so happenedin Walking Dead twos, you should
(19:57):
know better.
WellI have nothing to contribute to
that. It makes me so sad. But Idid finally watch on shutter
horror Newmar that documentarywas really good. And I didn't
realize it sounds like they'recoming out with another one,
which will be really cool likefollow up but just really
(20:17):
enjoyed it really enjoyedlistening to people talk about
their experiences with cinema, and what it feels like to lack
having representation ofyourself experiencing things
until they got to horror films, and they're like, yeah, at least
my charactersnot gonna get tortured and this
one or whatever, swift death orno representation at all. Yeah,
(20:39):
I just said yeah, I reallyreally liked it. It was very,
very cool perspectives andobviously just on the heels of
get out because they talk aboutget out so much. Yeah, pretty
sure the movie got made becausethe producers went and go, Hey,
look how well this movie isdoing. Can we do this? Dr.
Ritter, please, please. Yeah.
(21:01):
And it made me really want towatch both black yellow which I
already wanted to watch but alsoganja and has because I didn't
realize that was like what canfilm Tommy was guesting on the
show and I talked about thatone. Yeah, that's a good film.
Yeah, yeah. And the firstblacula is good. And the second
one not.
Will not watch the second onewill avoid avoid that one for
us. So a few weeks back, I did acolors of the dark. All the
(21:26):
colors of the dark is kind offor Satan or cults and made fun
of a title because it's funny.
Your vice has a locked room andonly I have the key.
Well, that popped up on Arrow, arrow streaming. So I was like,
oh, let's watch it. Holy shit.
It's good. Really directed bythe same guy. And stars the same
woman. She best third star Iguess in this one, as opposed to
(21:50):
the main one in the colors inthe dark. And, wow, we were
talking about a friend of oursone time but just doesn't like
mean movies.
Don't watch this one. Yeah, thismovie is fucking me. He's got an
abusive husband, who is horribleto his wife and his niece shows
(22:12):
up later, which is the lady fromcolours of the dark. So of
course that has been into thegospel Hello. And he's just an
asshole.
What I like a lot about thegiallo films.
We're talking about weirdearlier. They are unpredictable.
They go weird, weird freakingplaces sometimes. And sometimes
it doesn't work. But when itdoes work, holy shit. And this
(22:36):
film is really dark, relativelyviolent. But it's the film The
next film he did after cause thedarks are just follows in tone
and stuff. And hope is wellworth watching.
It is brutal. And it is mean.
Definitely. Yeah. And now you'llknow if you want to stick with
it about 10 minutes in probably.
(23:01):
That's why it's good to knowbecause sometimes like I get 10
minutes in and I'm like I'm justgonna keep watching in case it
changes something.
So it's good. That's a goodthing to know about it.
Before we take a break, justthrow out there that season two
a creep show is started onshutter and it's much better
than season. Oh, cool. Have youwatched both of the first? Yeah,
(23:23):
and the second episode is not asgood as the first episode but
it's still built better thanalmost every episode. The first
episode of both episodes arereally good psycho and I kind of
liked one the other one wasokay, but still good. Still very
watchable. They're starting tofeel like creepy. Oh, yes. Yeah,
no. Okay, how about we take alittle break and when we come
back, we're talking about mixingmagic.
(23:53):
Do you believe in magic andbelieve in magic.
(24:15):
But you do. You'll always have afriend.
Anything can happen right beforeyour eyes. Whatever you're
expecting. Expect to surpriseguys and bunny fries all over
the place. A talking with afriend puts a smile on your
face.
(24:50):
When you believe in magicwe have returned
Guys, this is my sub genre and Ichose mixing magics which is to
say, films that eitherpositively or negatively take
two different kinds of thingslike say sorcery and aliens. And
(25:15):
mix them together. Alright, Ithink I know where you're going
with.
With that in mind, I chose from1991 Highlander to
(25:55):
there's centuries on Earth.
Nothing could have prepared themfor.
Christopher Lambert, SeanConnery, Highlander.
quickening, quickening drama. Oh, I have not
seen this one. Good for you.
(26:18):
I'm sorry. Too much. budget of$30 million.
Wow box office of $15 million.
Oh, ouch. I will give $5 to thefirst one who can guess what the
rotten tomatoes critics is onthis? Oh man, I present 13 00 no
good review ever written forthis film? Oh my God by a
(26:45):
professional reviewer. Right.
Well, the the you know theaudience has it a 24%.
This was directed by RussellMulcahy. He did the shadow, the
original Highlander Razorback, and probably every MTV Video
from 1982 to 1992. If you lookon his IMDb, it is just a list
(27:07):
of every single hit video fromMTV in that period. He worked
with everybody, elton johnDuran, Duran, Madonna, all of
those videos that you rememberliking were directed by him.
Wow. It was written by BrianClemens who has 109 writing
credits including golden Voyageof Sinbad, Captain Kronos
(27:29):
vampire hunter and the watcherin the woods. He is a good
writer, but you would not knowit from this film.
It stars Christopher lamb bearand you might want to say
Lambert, but his productioncompany is called lamb bear
productions. So that is how youknow he actually pronounces it
(27:49):
lambda. Wow, he was from ofcourse original Highlander
fortress, Mortal Kombat.
To be done.
It also says Sure, serve SeanConnery, who you might remember
from being okay with hittingwomen.
(28:13):
So the movies czar Dawes mediaand the League of Extraordinary
Gentlemen, I'm just gonna tossout real quick if you've never
seen sardars you don'tnecessarily need to watch it but
you do need to look up SeanConnery playing his character
and sorry. It's an interestingbold choice for costuming.
beachwearalso, stars Virginia Madsen from
(28:34):
Candyman prophecy and of course, she was in
the wine movie that was hercomeback sideways, sideways and
she was just fantastic. AndMichael are inside 272 credits,
including scanners, TotalRecall, and Free Willy and a
(28:56):
whole lot of other movies youlove and I can't believe he's
okay. Haven't seen the originalHighlander? Yes, I okay, what a
lovely film. This is right. Imean, you've got these Immortals
who are somehow driven tocutting each other's heads off.
And each time they do that theyexperienced the quickening,
which gives them a little morepower until there are only two
(29:16):
fighting, and they have to fightto the end. Because there can be
only one. Yeah. And once they dothat the person who can who gets
the gift of being able to be thelast one standing, he has the
power to do all sorts of thingsaccording to that first movie,
and one of those is to grow oldand die if he so wishes.
(29:41):
Okay, so it's Sean Connery'slike quickening multiple accents
that do not match his country oforigin.
We're gonna get into some stuffthat's going to blow your
fucking mind.
If you think that you have aproblem with his Scottish accent
because he came from Egypt, waiting Tell us
(30:02):
I'm excited. The film beginswith some text on the screen
much like the first film did, explaining that the year is the
distant future. 2020 400industrial pollution has
destroyed the Earth's ozonelayer, leaving the earth at the
mercy of the sun's rays. And anelectromagnetic shield has been
(30:22):
set up since 1999. To protectthe world from the sun. However,
there was a small group of ecoterrorists who believed that the
ozone layer has repaired itselfand that the shield is now moved
to them very specific pipeline.
We are then introduced to anaged and pretty much dying
Connor MacLeod as he sits inopera theater watching a
(30:44):
performance of Wagner hasgathered them and while he is
watching this, he is reminded ofhis time on the planet Zeist.
What,follow on this way, there's
another planet, it's the planetsize. It's the Planet of the
immortals.
I thought they are an earth Hmm,and there could only be only one
(31:07):
oh was well, maybe the othersare on their other planet and
they are quickening each other.
How about I just explained somemore maybe then you'll
understand probably my role atthis red carpet for me on this
planet Zeist millions of yearsago, a rebellion was set up by
Ramirez and McLeod against thecruel slavers led by the
(31:27):
psychotic and irrational generalKatana. There's like slave
general Katana.
Yeah.
General sword 0% Yeah. Oh shit.
However, their revolt is stampeddown, and Ramirez and Connor
(31:51):
named Ramirez and Connor on thisplanet. So speaking their

their heads are cut off for somereason. Okay. Oh, you know, cut

Meanwhile, at the shieldCorporation, is this all in the
text at the front of a? No, no,no, you are discovering it's
a flashback to the planet Zeist.
Oh my god. Wow. Yeah, right. Oh,yeah. He's watching the play.
And it will remember the firstfilm relies on these very cool

know, make sense as we goforward. Well, now we're doing
the same thing. Vanessa, What'sher problem? This thing flashes
back to his time on Zeiss.
spaceships that you see somewrecked spaceships on the
planet, but but they live kindof like nomadic desert people.
(32:59):
It sounds really thoughtthrough. I'm on board. All
right, well, then you're gonnalove rowing this rowboat. So at
the shield Corporation, which iskind of funny since shield is
such a big part of everybody'slife now. Yeah, this this
corporation that put the shieldaround the world is called
shield shield.

the fact that Katana has somekind of view television screen
where he can see McCloud onearth, and see that he is like a

He decides to send twobirds like Immortals to attack
him and kill him.
Awesome impatience on like anepic scale. Try to keep up with
the amount of magics that arebeing mixed in this film.

I forgot about that partbriefly.

a good response. Then I get mylaser pointer out and I pointed
right at the boobies girl I'msorry.
Oh my gosh.
So Oh, I even wrote here's how Iwrote it. Then he pushes her

in there. It was a differenttime Vanessa.
It was a different time whenpeople had sex and alleys. I

Connor? It doesn't really mattermuch like Aliens vs predator no
(38:47):
matter who wins we lose.
What a shit show this movie.
I'd forgotten how awful it was.
That's the whole fucking movie.
But I actually watched what wascalled the quickening
fairytale ending which isavailable on YouTube.
(39:10):
Hasn't this isn't this sort oflike Blade Runner? There's a
bunch of different Yeah, wow. Inthis one. Katana are after they
have kissed and escaped and theshield has come down and we see
that it's beautiful sky upabove. Connor then says I have
to go back to Zeist and hedisappears and reappears in the
stars and then reaches his handout towards Louise Come with me
(39:33):
and she says, you know I can'tHow can I? And he says it's a
kind of magic.
And she then comes into thestars with him and they
disappear on their way to Zeiss.
They bring back Queen for forthat one. No.
Good, good job on Queen so youcannot use our song for that.
(39:58):
Just a little bit of triviaThat is not in my trivia notes
here. This movie came out thesame month that Freddy announced
he was dying of AIDS. And if youremember that time, he announced
it and like three days later, hewas dead. So the trivia I do
have on this is fuckingfantastic, as you might expect
from Michael Ironside recalledhis experiences on this movie.
(40:20):
Yeah, listen, I hated thatscript. We all did me, Shawn.
Chris, we were all in it for themoney on this one. I mean, it
read as if it had been writtenby a 13 year old boy. But I'd
never played a barbarianswordsman. Before. This was my
first big evil mastermind type.
I figured if I was going to dothis to the movie, I might as
well have fun and go as far overthe top as I possibly could. All
(40:44):
that eye rolling and foaming atthe mouth was me deciding that
if I was going to be in onepiece of shit like this movie, I
was gonna be the most memorablefucking thing. And I think I
succeeded.
Wow, Christopher lamb bear wasso disgusted with the rewritten
script that he wanted to dropout of the movie, but
contractual obligations forcedhim to finish it. Clancy Brown
(41:06):
was asked to reprise his role asthe Kurgan and a cameo, but
declined. Clancy Brown turneddown a roll. I mean, come on
right there your uniqueterritory. Roger Ebert named
this the worst movie of 1991 Oh,Director wrestling okay. he
disliked the theatrical cuts somuch that he left the premiere
after only 15 minutes. Wow.
(41:31):
Initial budget was estimated at$30 million.
Connery received $3.5 millionfor nine days of work, which he
donated to charitable causes.
shelters I hope.
After this film bombed at thebox office, it was decided that
the following movies would betrue and faithful to the
(41:54):
original movie story andmythology by pretending this
movie never happened. A longrunning joke amongst Highlander
fans states that the officialname of the third movie should
have been Highlander three theapology
Christopher lamb bear has verybad eyesight, eyesight. During
one sword fight lamb bear whowas not wearing his glasses
nearly severed my gland sidesright thumb. Oh, that's why he
(42:17):
always looks so classy. Itreally has horrible eyesight,
but get contact right. initialplans for third movie titled
Highlander three the reckoningwould have detached the story
even further. It would havetaken place entirely on Zeist
and would have involved Connortraining a rebel army to
overthrow the rulers of theplanet.
(42:38):
Here's one I always like seeingon a really shitty movie. A
technician died during filmingafter falling from a crane.
Somebody gave their life duringthis move. Oh, Virginia. Madsen
admitted she did this film fortwo reasons only. She wanted to
go to Argentina and she wantedto work with Sean Connery.
For reasons,Director Russell Mulcahy, he was
(43:00):
so frustrated at being lockedout of production that he tried
to have his credit changed toAlan Smithee. However, a section
of his contract forbade him frompublicly attacking this movie
before it was released. Theproducers said that if he had
his credit changed, that wouldbe considered an attack and he
would be sued.
The alternate ending thefairytale ending is when I
(43:20):
watchedin the renegade version the
documentary following the moviehas the filmmakers explained why
the original theatrical releasecontradicted the first movie.
According to them. Inflation inArgentina had gotten so bad
during filming that the moviesinsurance companies started to
take creative control. I made amovie that they would make they
thought would make the mostmoney. So Wow, that's the
theatrical insurance company.
(43:44):
Yes, making the creative we needaliens in the exciting in the
director's cut, which is called the renegade
version, which I think is theonly one you can get. Officially
right now. Connor Ramirez hisbackstory is changed instead of
aliens from the planet ZeistConnor and Ramirez are from
Earth in the distant past whowere sent to the future as
(44:06):
punishment for their rebellion,in which they were reborn in the
time periods to which they wereexiled hence, Connor forgetting
his past which he begins toremember at the opera. Wow.
Let's see. During nine days offilming, Christopher lamb bear
was a client of the BuenosAires, discotheques and
nightclubs. This made him unableto film any scenes during the
day due to being hung over.
(44:30):
Although the movie wasultimately taken out of Ross
Russell McKay's hands theBritish distributor allowed him
and producers a chance to reedit it. The British version
runs 10 minutes longer than thestudio's cut and is much closer
to the original script, including reinserted flashback
sequences, an alternate endingto theirs. Just so much here I'm
(44:50):
just gonna pass throughoriginally budgeted at 14
million economic problems inArgentina at the time because
the budget to balloon to 30million wow and
Then I thought this is kind ofinteresting. interests are
releasing the movies Americandistributors spent 4.4 million
on an advertising campaignmostly spent on radio spots.
local theaters were encouragedby inter star to create their
(45:12):
own advertising, with theincentive being a free trip to
Scotland for the theater ownerwith the most successful
campaign. Wow, I hope they didit. Nope, some manager out there
got a free trip to Scotland.
Finally, this is the one that'sthe most damning for Russell in
the LaserDisc VHS and DVDeditions of the renegade
version. There is a documentarywhere Russell Mulcahy and
(45:35):
multiple producers blamed thefailure of the film on bad
Argentinian labor ethics. Theythen discuss how they remove the
concept of the planet Zeist, inthe new cut. But this concept
appears in the first draft ofthe screenplay. So this was not
something that the studio madehim
(45:55):
trying to get out of it. He muchlike Zack Snyder, his Renegade
cut allowed him to go in afterhe had heard everybody bitching
about the things and go andchange the things that even the
bad things that he had done, right. Yeah, so it's kind of
weird to get these you know, these Mulligan's on films.
That's my movie. 0% Oh, man.
Back weeks. Have you eatensomething? Yeah, I'm pretty
(46:17):
surprised. Oh, sure. MarlonHighlander.
That is an amazing double Billand I would recommend nobody
ever.
No one sit down and watch themback to back unless there's a
lot of alcoholso you can fall asleep easier.
Plus, you're informers which youdidn't enjoy man plus Kong. I
(46:39):
like to Transformers better thaneither of these.
Yeah.
Okay, well, this was definitelyan interesting challenge it It
took me a little bit to wrap myhead around but um, I went to I
went ahead and found a littlegem called next.
(47:09):
Tell me what did you see?
Chris Johnson has the ability tosee things before they happen.
(47:34):
And if you can see the future, change the present.
With that kind of poweras a price, you can see things
before they happen only myfuture except
(47:54):
I saw far beyond anything I'veever seen before
to get away fromI believe that the urgency of
the situation compels the use ofany and all resources to obtain
chris johnsonI've seen every possible ending
(48:18):
none of them are good for you.
millions of lives are at riskand you could prevent a major
catastrophe.
It just hasn't happened yet.
27 February I tries to stillends up
(48:38):
we all are trying to keep youmay think you know what the
future holds people for fear youalready have it's happening now.
(49:16):
Pulled out in 2007the tagline is if you can see
the future you can save it. Isthis a Nick Cage movie? It is
indeed I have not seen this.
Have you know I always hearRotten Tomatoes critics give it
(49:38):
28% audience 53% that's so baddude that as you will. The
budget was 78 point 1 million.
The box office was 76 point1,000,070 $8 million for
Nicholas Cage film. There is alot of very early CGI for me
(49:59):
very early.
In the director of this piece, actually pretty cool guy will be
Tama Horry. He's a New Zealanddirector. And it seems like he
does a film every seven ishyears. It's like really long
amounts of time between each onebut he did the edge, Die Another
Day and triple x State of theUnion.
(50:21):
The writer for this was GaryGoldman, who you might remember
as being the writer for BigTrouble in Little China, Total
Recall. And others, JonathanHensley also wrote on this, he
wrote Armageddon Die Hard with aVengeance, the saint The
Punisher, and lots of adventuresof young Indiana Jones. The
(50:43):
story itself the the movie, nextis based off of Philip K Dix.
The Golden man is short story.
It's starring Nick Cage 106credits soon to be playing Joe
exotic and an upcoming projects.
(51:04):
Which I was really wild.
I will say I think they were oneof my favorite recent roles of
him is Spider Man noir in intothis. Oh, yes. So good. And
that. And I didn't realize thathis first role was the What was
that? ridgemont. High. fast timeFast Times at ridgemont. High.
(51:26):
Yeah, it's very, very early. Andthen his third movie was valley
girl, which I also did not quiterealize that movie. Yeah. Also
starring Julianne Moore 104credits, so only two less
currently than Mr. cage. And shewas in 80 episodes of As the
World Turns, which I had no ideaabout.
(51:49):
She also one of her her actualfirst feature film was Tales
from the dark side where she wasin LA to for nine. Oh, okay.
Yeah, that was like her firstmovie role. Oh, interesting.
Yeah, he reached out later andsteepish. Yep, absolutely. Last
but not least, Jessica Bielwho's been in 47 things,
(52:10):
including many different voicesand Pete the cat. She's been
recently in the center. I knewher from 134 episodes of seventh
heaven as Mary Camden, which, asyou go to Catholic school, I
swear they actually played itquick in class. I never liked
it, but I saw a lot of it. Andyou also might know her as
(52:33):
Justin Timberlake, his wife. Ithink they're still together,
but I can't say for sure.
Alright, the plots. All right.
Hold on to your butts.
Okay, so a small time Las Vegasmagician played by Nick Cage has
a secret ability to see twominutes into the future. He was
actually experimented on a fairbit as a child because this is
(52:56):
an ability he was born with. Andpeople have always tried to
figure out how to use it, takeadvantage of it, or test him on
it. So he's learned to keep alow profile and avoid using his
powers to gain lots of money ormake himself really seen or
famous, which is why he's areally, really shitty magician.
(53:18):
He has these visions where hecan see into the future. And he
can also see multiple timelinesin the future. So he can I think
pretty much like every second,he can choose to imagine a
different way he would act inthe future and see what the
outcome of that version won'tbe. So sometimes he has like
(53:38):
little splits off of like, different ways. If I go this
way, it takes me on format. Oh,shit, I'm dead. Yeah, 100%. So
yeah, there's a lot of himseeing himself die in various
ways.
But he's also having thesevisions of a mystery girl at a
diner that he has not yet met.
And he knows that if he is withher, he can see much, much
(53:59):
further into the future. So hestarts to go and frequent this
diner every day in the hopesthat he will come across this
mystery girl so he can see twominutes in the future. But he
can also get flashes likefurther. Oh, only if this girl
is somehow involved. Okay, yeah,so he can see through her
further down the road. Okay, butyeah, it's very confusing how
(54:23):
much time he gets by being righthere. It seems like days or
maybe even years.
In the meantime, he accidentallydraws attention to himself when
he stops a robber from killingtwo people at a local casino.
The FBI has been watching himand decides to kind of close in
(54:43):
on him because they want to usehis abilities to stop a terror
plot that is underway. They needto know what he knows. This is a
giant plot hole cut No shit.
Okay, and here is the suspect.
If there's some kind of nuclearcrisis that's coming, and they
want him badly. Meanwhile, theterrorists also want him to stop
(55:10):
that FBI to stop him fromstopping the FBI from stopping
them from doing their terroristattack.
I don't know. I'mfinally, Chris character's name,
meets Liz, who is this mysterywoman he goes back to the diner.
Kind of avoiding the FBI isavoiding everybody, but he still
(55:31):
needs to meet this girl. Hisdream girl goes to the diner
sees her tries to figure out theright scenario he can play in
which she'll meet him but she'svery sassy, intelligent, and
will not take shit from anybody, including creepy guys who are 25
years older than her. Becauseyes, Liz is played by Jessica
Biel. It's so weird anyway. Andso he figures out the exact
(55:55):
right thing to do when herabusive ex boyfriend shows up
having stalked her and threatensher. He comes up and confronts
the gentleman and instead ofwinning the fight, he chooses to
get punched in the face, thusgaining her sympathy. And her
then deciding to give him a rideto a school. She teaches that
for Native Americans in thedesert. So we're on our way to
(56:17):
the school nurse.
Yes. So he's immediately smittenwith her. He absolutely adores
her. They go over to the school.
There's a weird scene in whichhe manages to earn her
affections by turning a rock oneof these little kids is holding
(56:38):
into a gecko. So that's veryexciting to her, I guess. And
then they share a hotel room.
But he says, I'm going to sleepin the car because he's a true
gentleman. He goes to sleep inthe car and next day he comes
out, finds her walking out ofthe shower and tells her She's
beautiful. He then takes a paperrose lights it on fire. It's
(56:59):
like a lot of fire, and it turnsinto a normal rose. And then
they do it. And it isdisgusting.
Is it up against the wall andalley? No, no, never mind that
not interested.
In fairness, they don't evenshow it they show them making
out and there's so littlechemistry that you're like, just
stop just stop. They shot themmaking love. It's gone. It's
(57:23):
just them naked and like she'sasleep on him staring. He's just
staring off into the ceiling.
Looking to head look. Twominutes ahead, to instance the
future. I'm gonna come in twominutes. I've seen it.
UnlessI get a post bonus mode moment.
(57:45):
Talk to me about Ricky, you'resorry.
She then gets up goes and getsome breakfast and some clothing
I guess because he doesn't havea good close. And she gets
pulled over by the FBI who saysthis guy is a sociopath. He's
(58:05):
lied to you. He's delusional.
He's crazy. You're in danger, but you need to go back in and
give him this pill drug him butonly after five minutes of being
in and then it or no, after twominutes of being in and the
pills gonna take five minutes.
So anyway, he won't be able tosee in the future. I
know, but she doesn't know is itexactly two minutes? Exactly.
(58:27):
Two minutes seems like somethingthat shouldn't be an exact
amount. Yeah, the first they'rekind of fudging around with it.
But but it becomes kind of arule very quickly on what time
to draw the lottery numbers. Allright.
She comes back in she she drugs, the orange juice, but he's being
so sweet and so loving and sowonderful. She can't help
(58:49):
herself. And she says, Don'tdrink it. Don't drink the orange
juice. And so he does not. Andshe tells him the FBI are here
and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. He turns on the TV, he
starts changing channels. Andbefore he changes it says the
next big line of each thing thatthey're about to change to. And
(59:09):
thus he shows proof definitiveto her that he can see two
minutes in the future.
This is a this is when the moviebecomes a movie shouldn't be
like you're gonna go out andmeet the FBI. So rather, I mean,
yeah, okay. Anyways, anyway,he's running from the sea longer
(59:31):
to the future when he he doesn'twant to become a lab rat. So
anyway, yeah. So anyways, hetells her I'm gonna write a
thing on a piece of paper, you're gonna do exactly what it
says at a certain time he runsout. The FBI starts to chase him
as does the I thought they wereRussians. I guess they were
French. I don't know. Theterrorists. Everybody's chasing
(59:53):
him. A bunch of CGI logs rolldown a big hill. It's a very
exciting scene. It's actuallyAmazing because this film
balances CGI and like practicalin such a weird way that the
practical is fucking phenomenal.
Like it looks so good. The glassbreaking the cars being thrown.
It looks so solid and then theCGI is so bad. The physics are
(01:00:16):
so bad everything. The logs aresuper smooth. They look like
just cartoon animated logs likejumping down at him. But of
course, he gets caught becauseJulianne Moore is about to get
smashed by a log and she says,Are you going to just let me
die? And of course he can't. Sohe grabs her and the car falls
on top of them, but in just theright way they don't die. So FBI
(01:00:39):
now has him. Meanwhile, theterrorists grab list. Oh my god,
everything's getting crazy now.
So he agrees to work with theFBI to help get Liz. And thus a
giant action scene begins toensue where he is seeing
constantly a few minutes intothe future and trying to avoid
getting people killed. And Lizkeeps blowing up again and again
(01:01:00):
and again. And his futurebecause the terrorist blower up
strapped to a chair full ofexplosives. I don't know why
they want to do this at all. Idon't know why the terrorists
are hanging out with him at allto be honest at all. It doesn't
make any sense. That's okay.
It's fine. At least they're notmaking out anymore. And that's
what's important because I justI was like, Yes, put them in two
(01:01:20):
completely different parts ofthe planet, please. I don't want
to see it again. I just don't.
Sothere is a an ending that does
infuriate a lot of people. SoI'm going to just go ahead and
say what it is. Oh, becauseplease,
by all these I feel I just feelbad. I just I personally it's my
(01:01:43):
biggest pet peeve because evenif it's a movie I don't I'm not
interested in I usually don'twant it because it just upsets
me. Anyways. Um so we we see theworld
he saves lives. That day hasbeen one he agrees to help the
FBI and then he says it's toolate. I made a mistake and a new
(01:02:06):
goes off and the entire world.
Then Weaver winds and he islaying in bed staring at the
ceiling Liz in his arms. He hasseen into this far into the
future by holding on to her inthe night. None of this has
happened from the moment Liz gotup to get him way clothing. Wait
(01:02:29):
a second then he sawso you can just see events he
doesn't have to see it likethrough her eyes or no he just
saw the whole thing play outlike a movie where he was in it
but because she was there hecould see further I guess so he
you know kisses already saysit's really nice meeting you. I
am please wait for me. I will beback in either days or months or
(01:02:53):
years. But I will come find youif you can wait for me. And then
he goes off to help the FBI.
But always flashes me back tolast the Mohicans, right? It's
like, I will find you no matterwhere you are. It feels just
like it. The intensity of thisman. Alright, so you might be
asking. There's clairvoyance,right? I'm sure we're asking
(01:03:15):
nothing. He's a magician.
Where's the too many magics andI will argue okay. Being Nick
Cage is a form of magic all itsown. As soon as you put anything
extra on that is to any goddamnmagic. Nick Cage is one thing,
but if you're going to add himbeing able to see into the
(01:03:36):
future, that's too much.
Arguing argue with me. I don'thave to argue with you. You're
wrong? No.
ghostwriter. Is that too many?
magics? I haven't seen ghosts.
Well, yeah. in context of thatfilm. It is. Yeah. Good. Nick
Cage. No. And the other one Isaw where he's got some kind of
(01:03:58):
special the knowing that was toomany magics for sure. And that
was like their boy because Ilike you
know if I have to argue it. He'salso a small time magician. So
very well. There you go. Yeah, Ican see that. You can make rocks
turn into geckos. You're gonnaget to your trivia and yeah,
(01:04:19):
alright, so what did I just likeabout this movie? He says the
word orient covered that quitewell.
But let me get to the racistparts. Come on. He calls them
some people from I believe itwas from Hong Kong. People from
the Orient is very uncool.
Julianne Moore's character isshitty and horrible and she's
(01:04:40):
way too heavy of a hitter toplay that role. She's just way
too good. Um, it's extremelygross watching him and Jessica
Biel make out there is also nochemistry. In fact, there is
more chemistry between JulianneMoore and her ponytail in this
film, which she rocks very well.
(01:05:01):
The writing is extraordinarilybad. Beals characters sometimes
incredibly smart and witty andsometimes incredibly dumb.
Logic makes no sense at all. Whydo they care about a two minute
advance on any of this stuff?
Quick bombs gonna go off where?
45 miles from here. Good. Good.
Hope it's all good. Also Nickcages hair is extremely
(01:05:22):
distracting and bad. And this isnot unusual his hairline is I
mean, it's just really long andscraggly, but it's like, not
long enough to be Con Air likegross, kind of cool, and not
short enough to like, hide it.
So it's just too bad length.
What I like it's hilarious. Itis hilariously that if you want
(01:05:43):
to just laugh. It'll take youthere. I'm just getting further
and further into the so bad.
It's good world. It's nice towatch.
It was actually this that wasthis is something I thought
about when I was watching thefilm. I was like, I think this
is so bad. It's good.
The action moments are actuallypretty fun. There's some good
(01:06:05):
action considering how bad theCGI is. And if they had killed
the romance I think this moviemight have been almost okay. The
future moments gimmick isactually kind of neat. The way
they do it. A lot of times it'slike kind of works. trivia.
There is a girl in the openingwhen he's doing a very bad magic
show where he says your necklaceis gonna drop off your neck in
(01:06:28):
three to one and it drops. Thatwas played by his ex wife, Alice
Kim cage. He wears a gold jacketthroughout the entire thing,
which is a nod to the Philip KDick story. Golden man which is
based Nick Cage actually botchedthis really bad joke in the
movie. There's a lot of reallybad jokes in lines about a monk
(01:06:50):
with a hot dog. Who in the moviehe says I'll have one with
everything. Have you heard thatjoke about the monk with the hot
dog? I'll have one ofeverything, which it should have
been make me one witheverything.
Yes, very much, much funnier.
Nickgage came up with the idea that
(01:07:10):
he should be a Las Vegasmagician. He also came up with
the idea that Jessica Bielshould have the job as a Native
American reservation teacher. Healso came up with the idea that
he should make out with Jess, Ican only imagine then this seen.
The movie in Russia is calledthe Prophet Columbia dropped
this film from distribution. Itwas that far down the line. And
(01:07:34):
then Paramount picked it up andput it out. across the web from
Russia to Colombia says like whythe country?
Chris Johnson does haveabilities of pre cognition and
clairvoyance. So if I had toreally argue I just think the
Nic Cage thing is enough. Yeah,I am actually I'm gonna make a
(01:07:57):
judgment call here and say no.
So all this out What? What'syour other movie?
Did you watch another movie?
Hey, I bet there's a mixingmagic Star Trek episode. Yeah,
let me see. Let me see if I canthink
I'll have no facts. The Killersin this movie, the terrorists
communicate in French with aFrench accent, but also curse in
(01:08:19):
Serbian, that might have beenpart of why I was confused. They
also all look Russian. Theoriginal draft of the script is
beautiful. He isn't he doesn'thave pre cognition. He is a
mutant with pre cognition.
Chris was originally kind oflike a feral animal. And then
(01:08:40):
they kind of changed it intothis sort of social outcast
role. The reason why he has aromantic subplot at all is it's
because the only other mutant ofhis species left and they had to
mate together. It was originallyabout racism. And the whole
story was going to be theDepartment of Homeland Security
trying to kill the mutans aspart of a war on terror. And it
had a lot of tones about freedomand anti authoritarian,
(01:09:04):
authoritarian and then theypassed it on to the Columbia
lawyers and they said, No way.
Yeah. Yep, no joke that it wassupposed to end up having a
scene where Homeland Securitywas going to put him in a chair
potentially, for the rest of hislife with him looking into the
future, then they would cut offhis arms and legs so he could
(01:09:24):
act as a time scope machine, andonly have experiences that were
useful to them.
Very exciting. So yeah, oh, yes.
And other fun fact. In 2006stars did a 14 episode reality
TV miniseries called looking forstars and 200 contestants had
the opportunity to earn speakingroles in the film. Next, it was
(01:09:48):
earned by an actor named MarcusWalsh. So it's really straddles
the line between shitty andsuper shitty
Critics would agree. They, oncethis critic locally, who gave it
a 1.1 and a half star from theSeattle Times, said that late in
(01:10:11):
the movie Chris shouts at thebad guy. I've seen every
possible ending. None of themare good for you.
It's as if he's talking to theaudience. He's right.
Okay, that was pretty good.
That was pretty good. It was agood one. Yeah, you know, I
(01:10:31):
don't. I don't wish I hadn'tseen the film. I just, I enjoyed
it for every wrong possiblereason. And I just I wish
Jessica Biel I wish JulianneMoore had been his little love
interest. I wish anybody who hadbeen near his age had been his
love interest because it was sofucking gross watching him make
(01:10:52):
out with people like his weirdoddly smooth face. And then they
would randomly make him sweatysometimes for no reason. So like
his shirt would be sweat throughin like weird places. I don't
know what's happening. There waslactating. What are you judging?
Anyways? Well, I again, likedthe movie I
(01:11:16):
this one I had seen before andKelly I noticed it before we saw
it at the same place. 2000sevens nobody? Do you believe
what you're doing this life willbe done to you in the next
morning. We'll be here foranother health rescue. What a
university and aftera few hours ago.
(01:11:40):
For the Masters to the mirror.
What is it that stares back in?
The image of himself.
The resources pointpronounces the same words.
The other models are theirmasters.
Link.
Reflection closer ties when youdo when you turn away.
(01:12:14):
told you this is not happening.
This isn't thisis not possible. So it cannot
possibly be happening. Maybe I'mdreaming. Maybe the part of
someone else's dream. It doesn'tmatter that I don't know what it
is. It is enough to know what itis.
(01:12:37):
is not to see.
Nobody.
Nobody does this to me. Nobodyis doing this to you.
And there's nothing you can doto stop it.
(01:13:02):
Oh, yeah, the Lovecraft filmfestival? I'm not the brand new
nobody that's out in theatersright now. And let me tell you
that made it a real pain in theass to search for this.
It's on prime. And the rottentomatoes is no critics have a
rating for it. And it's 35 bythe crowd. Oh, but most of the
reasons that Read Across werejust like, didn't get it. Yeah,
(01:13:25):
it's too convoluted andwhatever. Anyway, so it's
directed by Sean Linden, who hadjust had a film out of Hunter
Hunter. Oh, that was? Yeah, Iremember hanging with him at the
festival and telling him howmuch we enjoyed his movie. Yeah,
it was great to hear that Iliked Hunter Hunter. That's
pretty good. Hunter Hunter isthe one with the horrifying
final scenes. Yes. Yeah. So it'sfairly straightforward. Did you
(01:13:48):
get the heads like Oh, Jesus. Healso wrote it, he wrote is
written some other stuff inplain sight and the fixer TV
show. I'm sure that one I knowof it. Starring cost us
customers. Mandalore wasprobably not as pronounced but I
like that. That's his Mendlerhe's got 146 credits. And this
(01:14:11):
is kind of the impressive part.
It's been in several softphones, but he's got
seven movies in post three movieshooting and 10 movies in pre
production. This is a workingactor.
Oh, he's also on picket fences.
And Deron wall who was inchannel zero and cult of Chucky
and personal Chucky. Yay. At aRoss who's in red heat and
(01:14:34):
lethal weapons. tons of videogame voices and Full Metal
Jacket.
Most of the cast there's not alot of people in this.
So this is a weird film. So noirwith the look that's for sure.
starts off with a man has gothis gun to his head. And boy did
I get an unfortunate autocorrecthere. I would say he's being
(01:14:58):
threatened by nobody at autocorrected to his being throated
by nobody.
And then moves to these strangeimaging shots of fire and a
witch throwing bones as she'swearing a blindfold what's going
on. So there's one magic, literal magic. And then cut to a
(01:15:22):
guy answering a phone in a phonebooth and
talking about killing thisperson and stuff like that.
A lot of these early shots arein close ups and medium shots.
So you really can't see quitewhat's going on yet. And nothing
to establish what is going onor where they are located.
(01:15:44):
But they're incredibly well shotand they look really friggin
cool. Is it the planet sized?
There.
I think I'd call it blackfacebecause he's not playing any
representation. He just is totalShadow Man and His face is
painted like black black, likematching his coat. And he
(01:16:04):
frequently disappears intoshadows without look. Part of
what I love this being shot innoir is it's also snowy. So
there's this really greatjuxtaposition of the no matter
what you shoot in snow, you'regetting reflected light from all
over the place. But it still hasreally dark shadows. So it's
actually really well shot, gettries to go home after he thinks
(01:16:27):
he's done his job and forgot hiskeys in the door. But the guy
who runs the place found andform again, or did he forget his
keys in the car or door This iswhen he gets back to the thing.
It's obvious he's been shot bysomebody which you start to see
a scene about that happening.
And then you get the nice movietime tested. ability to solve
(01:16:50):
gun wound problems of puttinggunpowder and biting it on fire.
Then you don't go the hospitalthrough and through right above
the heart.
So they did a nice job with theeffects. It's very painful
looking, digging out the bulletand
that intercuts again with thewitch in the previous scenes.
(01:17:12):
And the film moves to anothermain character is a mob boss
trying tohiding for sight don't really go
in a lot of detail yet otherwisehiding. This is not going to be
a movie I'm going to lay out aplot to for you. So just so you
know, if it sounds like weirdconnected scenes, that's because
that's exactly what it is. Buthe's trying to set up a final
deal that sounds like he's goingto get out of town after that's
(01:17:33):
done and get away after this guygets killed. And he starts
talking to somebody in theshadow. And it's a man he tired
to kill someone when he findsout he relaxes and all is good.
And then the scene continues onand becomes the beginning of the
movie. Where we saw before withthe guy with a gun to the back
of his head is that mob guy.
(01:17:56):
And he's paid for his payment isa box that is wrapped in you
don't see what's inside the box.
So he takes that back to hisplace where again, he has
problems with the keys does hehave them as the door unlocked
right the door and he hides thethat box away.
Every time he shows up at thehotel, things are slightly
(01:18:18):
different who he'll either behe's forgotten his keys, he's
never checked into the hotel.
All kinds of weird, great stuffis going on.
And again, there's another scenethat starts off where the mob
guy is talking to one of hisbodyguards about karma. And then
moulds into a scene we've seenbefore.
(01:18:40):
It's incredibly difficultediting going on as well. And
then you get now this mainstoryline, the main shots
switches perspective. So westart to see these scenes we've
already seen, but from adifferent angle, from what
appears to be a differentperson. And then you see it's
the guy who's the killer fromearlier who had the his face all
(01:19:01):
shadowed out. And so now you'rekind of like, okay, what's he
doing here? So this is sort ofnow we've got two people
existing in the same timeline.
So you can see like, he's whenhe got shot, it was this guy
shooting him. So he shothimself. He starts following
himself after shooting himselfand the witches there and she's
trying to kind of talk to him,but he sort of ignores her.
(01:19:24):
Maybe you should talk to thislady. She seems to know what's
going on here. Then the he goesback and the bullet repair scene
is done again. But now he'soutside the bathroom watching
himself do that. And the moviecontinues in this weird,
disjointed manner until the end.
And one thing that the film doesreally well is is done well
(01:19:47):
enough and it's told convolutedenough. And the director
mentioned this in some of hisinterviews that
he was pleasantly surprised howmany people watched it twice if
it showed twice at a festival, which I think we did. Yeah.
Hey, guys, it's that's the maincriticism of the film is it's
too convoluted and I didn'tunderstand it's like, well,
(01:20:08):
that's okay. As long as it's notstupidly annoying and you go
back and watch it and go, Oh,this all falls apart. It becomes
clearer as the more you watchit, it does actually get better.
There are there's so littleabout this movie. I was a little
surprised to find out it'sstreaming on Amazon. And amazon
(01:20:28):
prime, no rental. Watch it. Sothis must have been some package
deal of which they bought like50 movies because they wanted to
get that we want that one. Isthat great. You're taking these
to the right.
It deserves more than that. But,boy, I found one interview with
him. And very little else. Someof that could be just a whole
(01:20:49):
lot of stuff getting pushed outby the movie. Nobody which is
like coming out What now? I didfind that Sean London's favorite
film is the dark crystal. Funfact. Yes, what but one thing
that is kind of interesting thatlike, Oh my God said the most
difficult aspect of shooting wasthe weather. He'd lived in
Winnipeg for 30 years stillcan't deal with how cold it
(01:21:11):
gets. The film was shot entirelyat night, almost all outside
during the coldest part ofwinter. So temperatures got down
to negative 40.
Is that a lot of people said,Wow, I used a lot of smoke and
fog like No, we didn't. That'sjust what happens. It was cold
enough that any condensation inthe air was missing. You see
these guys and they are bundledup the hats and the gloves and
(01:21:34):
big coats the scene with amobster he's in a boat. And that
room he was in was so cold thatthey could go outside to get a
little bit warmer. Oh my god,cuz it was all metal and it was
just ridiculous. But it doeskind of make it look cool.
Because every car that starts upor drives by as tons of fog
(01:21:56):
coming out of it. Everybody thattalks is just missed all over.
It's really a neat lookingmovie. Those prizes only
screened at nine festivals. Oh,hold on man festivals in October
when I read this interview wasplaced.
But Sao Paulo, New York,California, Arizona, Oregon, won
a couple Best Picture Awards,Best Cinematography Awards, Best
(01:22:17):
Actor awards, I did really wellin the festival. And like I said
before, it's very low budget, Iwasn't able to find a budget.
But it's incredibly well shot.
It was one of those things sortof like the one I talked about
last week where it's a lot offriend people he was able to
call favors in and get as muchbudget as he could hired the
(01:22:37):
actors shot it. Then gotfinishing funds afterwards. I
definitely say this is a damngood one. So what are the magics
being mixed? Or you've gotmagic? And then you've got time
jumping? I was like, yeah, wasthis a time loop movie or just a
time travel movie? It's hard.
(01:22:57):
It's not real clear. It's alittle bit of Groundhog's Day,
but it's also but it's not inthat he sees himself. So it's
like he's looping but he's notlooping back to his own reality.
Back to near reality. Sothere's, there's a lot of weird
stuff going on. That isconvoluted. And if you if you
did what, like I think this is agreat theater watch where you're
(01:23:20):
stuck and you just have to watchit. There's nothing that's gonna
distract you. Because if youkind of look away from this
movie after a few minutes, youcould be really, really
yeah, Vanessa, see how when Iasked him what the magics were,
he could clearly tell me whatI just might not stand by my
choice. I think it's I thinkI've found a revelation about
(01:23:40):
something in our world cages, akind of magic.
as Eric pointed out, Eric, Ibelieve it's your choice. genre.
So let's see how are we going todo this one we're gonna do at
that one.
There. Kind of a convoluted ideabut so let me lay it out for you
(01:24:04):
have no idea how you readchapter this episode. It doesn't
matter. Vanessa, just dowhatever she wants you right?
Oh, yeah. I learned a coma.
Mr. Cobra is for Star Warsholidays.
Anyways, soa great horror film. I'll go
back to dive back in horror herethat we've shied away from a
(01:24:26):
little bit, but this film canhave no direct sequels. no
obvious knockoffs or remakes.
There needs to be a whollyoriginal and encompassed film,
for example, obviously, youcan't do frame 30. But you also
can't do Invasion of the BodySnatchers because even though it
doesn't have sequels, it doeshave remakes. Right? So one and
(01:24:47):
done. Yep, that's a challenge inthis modern era. It's gonna be
hard to go back a few decades.
Looking on IMDB. It's amazinghow many times I'll look up a
film and discover that likethere's another there's
remake in progress or Oh, yeah,we've even talked about a few
movies and in trivia you guysare mentioned and it was remade
like, like the fog, completelyforgotten that that had been
(01:25:09):
remade. Yeah. Good on you forthe Mr. Smallville. Oh, was that
okay? All right, guys. Well, that's the show then. As usual,
thanks so much for everybody thewonderful response we've got for
the value for value. I'm talkingto you Jason this week. Thanks
so much. Thank you so much. Andand thanks, everybody for
(01:25:31):
liking, sharing the posts andall that stuff. All of that
stuff matters to us and itmatters to getting the name out
there and we really reallyappreciate it Yeah, there's the
fun things to do you know, thewe're still working out how
we're gonna what we're gonna dowith this things but along that
is helping us grow stuff whenyou see a post from Strange
Aeons commented on, and this youknow, if you got a friend of
yours is on Strange Aeons, butthey're not listening. Tell them
(01:25:53):
to not just like our page, listen to the podcast here. Come
on, and check us out or evenjust subscribe and don't listen.
That's fine.
That's my new motto. Make sureyou subscribe and not listen.
Apparently, over the next fewmonths subscription is going to
be changed to follow. Because ifyou upset I don't know if it's
(01:26:16):
Spotify, or Apple or whoever haspodcasting is feels correctly or
wrongly that a lot of peopledon't subscribe to podcasts
because they think thatsubscription means a fee.
You're going to alter it tofollow or something along those
lines in 20 years when we listenback to this episode, we're
gonna be like Oh, my God.
Remember it didn't used to becalled subscribe, or follow or
(01:26:36):
Vanessa's already okay with thisbecause she's got a bunch of
weird guys have followed heralready. So there you go. Yeah.
Do I?
Those improv classes are reallypaying off.
Okay, that's the show. We'll beback in a week and we are
(01:26:57):
