Unknown (00:00):
I'm not gonna say what it wants, like, I don't know.

(00:06):
Oh, I'm sorry. Did I break yourconcentration?
Somewhere between science andsuperstition,
such sights to show you.

(00:31):
Strange eons. Welcome to strangeeons. Radio that is Eric over
there. Hello, that is Vanessaover there. Hello, and I am
Kelly. Boy, what a interestingconversation we've had leading
up to this episode. But I've gotsomething even more interesting
you guys. Have you guys gone onto Netflix and checked your
Zodiac watch list?
No, apparently not what?

(00:53):
What's the problem? Oh,no, there's they figured out our
birthday andwhat we should be watching.
You've giventhem your birthday. Sure sign
up. Yeah, yeah. I'm sure. 15years ago, I definitely did
Netflix on August 21 launched anew astrology hub, your Zodiac
watch list that you browse thestreamers catalog through the

(01:15):
lens of the zodiac. Oh, my God,for example, they each each sign
has its own theme now stockedwith titles that reflect those
traits. So, uh, Virgos arealways hustling. You would see
animal kingdom, the Queen'sgambit. Now You See Me under
that list, okay, um, Pisces, uh,they manifest the dream, so A

(01:38):
star is born and it's on theirlist. EXO kitty and Groundhog
Day. Oh my god. And for myself, cancers will cry if they want
to. The Gilmore Girls is on mylist, Ginny and Georgia and
Grey's Anatomy, three series andmovies I have zero interest in.
I think I've seen a fair amountof all those, and I can't

(02:01):
imagine you enjoying any of themonce you're signed. I am a
Virgo.
Oh, you're okay. And Eric, here,December, what is that?
Sagittarius?
Let's see, like serial killermovies and stuff like that. Oh
my God, I didn't,I didn't write down. Oh no,
there it is. Sagittarius. Bringadventure. So lost the Witcher
and Jurassic Park. Holy shit.

(02:23):
They nailed you. I haven'tseen the Witcher. The others are
definitely now, I should, Iguess you
probably should. You might enjoyit.
They they also have like a rowlabeled, beware. Mercury is in
retrograde, featuring suchtitles as Black Mirror, extant
subservience maniac, theelectric state leave the world

(02:44):
behind and the Lost WorldJurassic Park. So I just wanted
everybody to know that,Oh, my God, this is insane.
Also, theother thing I want everybody to
know is, none of that matters.
You can't. You can't boil 8billion people on this planet
into 12 personality types, especially like that definitely
hit at least some of the filmsin the top 10.

(03:09):
Like you like Jurassic Park.
That's how all of thesehoroscopes work, right? So
generalized that you're likeJesus Christ.
None of this makes sense. I justwent to my watch list. These are
ridiculous. These. It's it makesthey want me to watch a guide to
meditation.
That's probably a good idea. Uh,there's a giant picture of

(03:32):
somebody's colon. So I don'tknow what that one's about.
Advertisement, probably it says, hack your health, a documentary,
cone heads and transformers,Rise of the beasts.
Oh, um, I kind of liked thatone. I didn't.
I fell asleep during it.
I don't know if that's actuallythe right one, because
everything you're listing off ison mine as well.
Oh, okay, so I think this, do Ihave to go to it? It says your

(03:55):
Zodiacwatch, yeah. But it's, yeah,
I've got the zodiac.
Oh, man, oh, you signed Virgo. Iam, oh, okay, oh, you know what?
Though, I bet I know why it'smessed up. Because this is my
I'm on my husband's account.
This is his birthday, and he's aDecember or January. He's
January. So I wonder if he hasthe exact same thing. So I don't

(04:18):
get to know what I'm supposed towatch, and Dean is a cancer. So
Wowser, I'll definitely have todive into the silliness of that
dropping knowledge bombs on you.
That's the kind of quality youget here, value here, right?
Bring some value this way. Oh mygod. Your your Zodiac watch
list, you guys, I have seen somestuff, and I am shocked to find

(04:40):
out that you guys have not seenthe same stuff that I have seen.
Yeah, sometimes it's been acouple, not this time. I can't
believe you. You're not allcaught up on peacemaker,
no, I know that it's out. Justhave not yet watched it.
I've seen the first episode, yeah, so I don't know, which was
quite an experience. Experience.

(05:01):
Oh dear. The second episode evenmore of quite an experience.
It's almost like they said, seewhat the boys did. We're not
gonna get violent, but we'regonna up some shit.
Oh no. Hope you're okay with alot of nudity in the second
episode.
Oh, in the second episode ofJesus Christ.

(05:25):
Yeah, it's a it's a show,wacky, and I gotta say, James
Gunn taken some pretty bigswings here, risky swings with
this character that I waswatching and kind of chuckling
uncomfortably along with butthinking this is a big ask to
have people see him do this andthen still be sympathetic

(05:46):
towardshis character. Okay, is that the
main character or a newcharacter? The main character in
thesecond episode? The beginning of
the second episode starts offwith a sequence that I was like,
okay, James, Oh,no. I mean, I feel like we saw
some turning points for him inseason one, so that's kind of a

(06:08):
bummer to me. No.
I mean, they fit. I mean, atleast what I've seen, it's not,
they're not veering off stories.
Okay, complicated.
Here's a very complicatedcharacter, and I think that
we're going to, I mean, he makessome decisions that you're at
least in these first coupleepisodes, that you're going to
be like, Fuck, I get why you didthis, but I can definitely see

(06:30):
this is going to come back andbite you in the ass, very badly,
so. But it's a, it's still agreat show. Very funny. They
switched the opening musicsegment to foxy Shazam, which is
a band that I loved for years, and I like this song, but it
does not have the same oomph asthe the do you
want to taste it? That's what Ithought to cycle. This is fun

(06:52):
and this is good, but it it'smore mellow, yeah? I mean, it's
not mellow, but it's more danceyinstead of entertaining.
And they are their new dancenumbers in the open.
Oh yeah, yeah. It's stillentertaining. All the new
characters and everything.
It the first one, first season.
It's like, you know, when you'rebinging a lot of times, you skip
credits and stuff like that. Butthat one always, always watch.

(07:15):
Always watch this one. I'llwatch a couple times, but I I
can see myself skipping it if Ibinge two or three episodes.
Yeah, I'll just say, as an asideon this, Rick and Morty had
their full season come out, andI really feel like they jumped
the shark. One of the episodeshad James Gunn as himself

(07:38):
character. And I was like, well, the Simpsons even stopped doing
this 15 years ago. This is notexactly new, but it was a
sequence with him against Zach, the Justice League guy. Snyder.
Snyder, thank you, Snyder, himagainst Zack Snyder, with their

(07:58):
stuff. And of course, ZackSnyder is just constantly
working out the entire time. AndI was like, this is funny, but
it's not Rick and Morty funny.
So it does not sound that soundsmore like Family Guy or
something.
Yes, exactly, right. Anyway, peacemaker is on. Was it called
now just max,max or HBO? No, it's HBO again.
It's, I was gonna say, did werebrand it again. It's just Max.

(08:19):
It was, it was just, it was justHBO.
Max, yeah, I think so, okay, sothat's freaking it's
getting awful. I'm like, whatwas wrong with HBO?
That's a great property. Wasknown for the last 45 years.
Let's change it.
I also don't understand what thedifference between them is. Is,
is it that you can just streamfake

(08:39):
combined HBO and the DiscoveryStreaming right show. So they
added a bunch of stuff. So Iguess they wanted to change. So
now it's max.
Did they get like clues?
But then all of that hasseparated again. So yeah, that
must be why the name changeagain.
So weird, these freakingstreamers.

(09:01):
Anyway, Vanessa, what about you?
Well, as you mentioned, Iactually have not been watching
all that much, just have not hadthe time. But I was able to read
a comic that I came acrossreally randomly. It was in like
a best of the year list, and Iwas just like, it has an

(09:21):
interesting cover I'm gonna getfrom the library and not waste
money, in case it sucks. Andthat's called What's the
farthest place from here? I'vejust started now volume four,
because it's so freaking good.
Yeah, I'm just really, reallyenjoying it. I love the setup.
The story follows a our worldthat looks very different

(09:41):
because something happened manyyears ago, and now it is just
populated by children, and whenthey become adults, they have to
leave their respective homes.
Their homes are essentiallyleftover pieces of society. So
the group we're following livein a record. Store. There's
others that live in a bank. It'sbasically the Warriors, right?

(10:04):
Like, they, yeah, they like, gointo massive battles if they get
into each other's turf. Like, there's all kinds of stuff.
There's the Royals. There'speople living the old folks
home, and they have to pretendand, like, dress up like old
people. It's very weird, and itto make it even weirder, they're
supplied food and all kinds ofother things through these

(10:25):
people called the strangers, which may or may not be people.
They're very tall things thatare like wearing black Victorian
dresses and have their entireface covered by a bag. It's very
creepy. It's very strange. AndI'm just really, really digging
it. So, Man, that soundsawesome, amazing. Four volumes,

(10:46):
already? Four volumes, yeah, atleast through the end of three.
It's very good. I don't know iffour is gonna maintain it or
not. It kind of feels like threehas a good, natural end if they
want it to end. But it's greatbecause you start off
immediately with this girl whosays she's sick and she's not
sure what's wrong with her.
She's clearly very pregnant. Shejust has no one knows. No one

(11:07):
knows what pregnancy is in thisuniverse.
Because how are all the kidsbeing born? Then if it's all
just kids, the strangers show up with
babies and hand them to the newhouses. So these kids have to
raise these babies that justappear occasionally, and they
give them names. And each eachsection has like a god as well,
like they all have their ownversion of a god they worship.

(11:28):
So the record store, when youcome of age, you pick out a
record.
It's very crazy, butwhat constitutes becoming an
adult the age of 18.
They don't make it super clear,I think is hitting the age of
18, okay? And we don't know whathappens, and we, we do
eventually, okay, yeah, but youdon't for that's the mysterious,

(11:51):
yeah.
You also turned me on to thatone
nice house on the lake, which Ithought was just fucking crazy,
too. So crazy. Yeah, I'm lookingforward to this real quick. Did
you know that Event Horizon hasa comic book out now? Prequel
comic? No, just just came out. Iwonder. I wonder if I did read
it yet. Yeah, I picked it up.
It's, it's, it's weird, yeah,that's good,

(12:17):
yeah, okay, well, I will, yeah,I will definitely pick it up
next time I'm at the comic bookstore, I'd love to dig into it.
And also, Peacemaker has a comicseries that is basically
following the show at thispoint. So they definitely wrote
Peacemaker to be a lot more likeJames good
maker. Oh, this sold. Well, okay, well, I've got one I'm not
going to recommend, not becauseit's not good, not well done.

(12:42):
Never take candy from a strangeror the original British name.
Never take sweets from astranger. This is a very early
hammer film from 1960 so youknow, of course, you see that.
Y'all let's check it out. I'vebeen reading Christopher
Alexander, yeah, ChrisAlexander's book art, I think
it's art, trash and treasure, something like that, where he's

(13:03):
just this mall, massive volumeof weird movies. And there is,
saw this one's like, Okay, checkit out. Maybe physically
uncomfortable. Oh, wow. Theynever take candy from a
stranger. Is exactly what youthink is leading to. The movie
starts with these two littlegirls playing in a field, and
one of them's a dropped aquarter or something like, oh my

(13:26):
god, we can't get candy. Now.
It's like, I know where we canget candy. And that cuts and
goes back to one of the girlscoming home, and in perfect
child innocence, it doesn't gettoo doesn't go too far, but she
describes this horrifying sceneto her parents, and she's just
like, oh yeah. And we did this, and that's like, and my stomach

(13:49):
just went, it's like, oh my god.
And then the whole movie isthese parents going, we are
going after this guy. Well, thetown is he's the father of the
guy who runs the town in thatclassic small town kind of story
idea. And everybody going, don'tsay anything. I'll just make it
worse. Kids are okay. Theybounce back. They can handle

(14:10):
things. And it's just like, ohman. Is honestly an incredibly
well done movie. It's veryreminiscent of, oh shit, the
very famous movie about racism, where the little girl is killed
and it goes to court and shit.

(14:31):
It's like one of the most famousfilms, period. But to kill a
mock, yeah, it's very similar infeel that in ways, it's not a
courtroom drama in any way. Butjust the idea of this is kind of
okay, because we're just goingto sweep it under the rug. You
don't have to worry about this.
It's just like, oh my god, that's

(14:52):
so messed up. Because especiallywith British culture, that's so
into like, don't make waves thatyou can see like that being a.
Really interesting statementpiece. At least it
got reviled. It got attackedheavily when it came out for
saying the quiet part out loudand calling people to task for
sweeping this kind of shit underthe rug. And it is just, I mean,

(15:16):
it is incredibly well done film,or else it wouldn't be so
horrifying, but yeah, one of ourI did this for my 101 of our
listeners posted on, sorry toblank them in your name, but how
he watched it when he was reallyyoung, but then watched again
later when he had kids.

(15:37):
Like, yeah, that's James, yes.
Is this a movie? So this wasmade in the 60s. Is it set in
present day, 60s then? Or it is,Oh, wow. I mean, it's
British, so it always kind ofhas that a little bit older
feel, 1960 us. But it is 196019, so it's still, you know,

(15:59):
basically, the 50s. What did youwatch that on Amazon? But you
can also watch it on Fossum.
Oh, god, yeah. What is Fossum?
No idea.
Okay, that pops up on minewhenever I'm looking for
something too. I don't think Ican. I don't think I can. Have
to be Pluto and something calledFossum, yes. So that was called,

(16:21):
never take candy from astranger. Yeah? The other thing
that I watched, another TVseries that's been going on for
a couple of weeks now is aliencolon Earth.
Yeah, oh, yes. I think I've onlymade it to episode three, maybe
almostall of them. There's four out.
As we record this, only four.
Yeah,I'm seeing a lot of hate for

(16:42):
this. I gotta say that so far,I'm enjoying it a lot.
I'll even go further than that.
For me, there's alien aliens, and at this point you never know
where it's gonna go this becauseI think it just captures that,
whatever it was that made thefirst Alien especially work,

(17:02):
because it's prequel to that.
So, wow, yeah, it's, it'sstrange to me. I'm watching a
lot of people. This is, it's nostranger than me bitching about
strange new worlds. You know, weall want what we want. Sure, the
difference, I think, is, can youimagine being a fan of this

(17:23):
franchise and all its shittyfilms, but bitching about this
particular series very weird, actually, in the upper echelon
of alien stuff, so I'm not surewhat they're not getting out of
it. I like the acting. I likethe story. I see a lot of people
complaining about the Peter Pananalogy. And it's not an

(17:44):
analogy. It's a very strong partof the story.
So it's how this strange, ultrawealthy guy relates to the
world.
The boy genius. Yeah, he's he'sclearly infatuated with Peter
Pan. So it's not any kind ofmetaphor. I Pinocchio
might have, might would haveprobably been too on the nose.

(18:08):
So, you know, you get a littlelittle movement
here. And then the introductionof the new alien classes. I
thought was interesting. Theeyeball alien I know, is going
to play a very interesting partcoming forward. And if that
little fucker, boy genius, doesn't get taken over by that
thing, I'm going to be veryupset.

(18:28):
And the different,I want to call them replicants,
but synthetic beings that theyhave and everything I think is
really cool. And I would like tohave seen some kind of tie to
Blade Runner in that especiallywith the one guy looking so much
like Rutger Howard's characterfrom Blade Runner. But I'm I'm
really loving it. I think theeffects look really nice, and

(18:49):
the story is very, verycompelling to me. The the
complaints on the the child kidsacting even though they look
like adults is weird. It's like, yeah, they're not adults.
They've been in this body forwhat, few weeks, or something.

(19:09):
So, yeah, there's still going tobe little kids are going to
react like little kids and it,and I think that's done
actually, really, really well,add
so much to it, because we're soused to seeing Alien films where
it's adults losing their mind, like it's really interesting to
have that perspective, to have akid who's, like, physically able

(19:31):
to handle the situation, butmentally and emotionally, like
it's moving Exactly, yes, yeah.
So that is on, I guess I'mwatching it on Hulu, but I
imagine it probably on Disney,if you have that package or
whatever, right?
However they're combining thoseknows, yeah,

(19:51):
who freaking knows? Man,is it? Yeah. Sorry. Took me a
minute there. So. Yeah, theother thing I was going to talk
about is that I've been kind ofunwinding in the evenings,
playing a video game,essentially. And I've been
playing a lot of this videogame. Every time I'm given the
option of doing something otherthan playing this video game,

(20:14):
I'm like, I'm just going to playmore of this video game, which
is, it's a couple years old now.
It's called Horizon Zero, Dawn,uh, forbidden West, which is the
second in the series I hadalready played through the first
you're, you're playing as thisgirl named Aloy, who is in this
almost, it's like it's notcaveman. It's like post is

(20:36):
tribalistic future world wheresomething happened again to all
of people on Earth, and societybasically got reset. And instead
of having giant like tigers andbears and dinosaurs, you have
robots, so robots that are fromthe previous days that seem to

(20:59):
attack people, and you're notquite sure, like what they're
doing there, why they're there.
So it's this big mystery thatunravels in the first one, and
the second one is sort of acontinuation of that storyline,
where now you're you know whathappened to people, and now
there's more, you know, somepeople maybe left Earth and are
coming back, and it's a bigdeal, so it's been a lot of fun

(21:21):
and good way to waste time.
So it's been a post apocalypticthing.
Yeah, it's post apocalyptic, butyou're playing in these, like,
lush forests and stuff, becausethe world has taken itself back,
essentially. So you I actuallyjust entered Las Vegas, and it's
just a giant desert with, youknow, some cement pieces here

(21:44):
and there, and somebody managesto get a holographic outline of
the city that like place. Sowhen you're running around at
night, you can see the sort ofholographic outlines of
different buildings that you'reentering and what it used to
look like. So there's, there'sreally fun plays on that kind of
stuff. Yeah? But it's very easyto go from like, you know, Las

(22:07):
Vegas to California to Montana, because you're just sort of
running around and all of asudden you're in forest and
you're, yeah, so they condensedit Sure, pretty, pretty
hardcore.
What's their Grand Theft Auto?
Yeah, yeah, exactly, yeah. Comefrom LA to San Diego.
Not a big deal. Does not takethe hours that it should. Can

(22:27):
you repeat that title again?
It's called Horizon Zero, Dawn, forbidden, West, okay,
yeah, relaxing to video gamesprobably wouldn't work for me. I
tend to get pretty amped up.
Amped up,yeah, that's, that's definitely
what happens to to my husband.
He gets very worked upsometimes. And I'm like, You

(22:49):
need to chill the F out, sir. Itis we hold in our hands a
controller. Nothing before us isreal. Okay?
I don't think. I don't feel Iget that horrible. That sounds
interesting. I think the term isnerd
rage, yes, nerd rage, yes. Hehas a special little bit of nerd

(23:11):
rage, which I yeah, I was raisedto understand that if you threw
a tantrum at the video game, then you were very uncool. So I
was raised to not do that. Wewere playing pong and Mario. I
was, yeah, of the era of Mario.

(23:32):
So, like so another one I'vewatched in the 100 Days is a
movie called bound to vengeance, which stars Tina Eve love, I
believe, is how you say it'skind of like low budget Jennifer
Lawrence. She really looks, hasa very similar look to her, but
the idea is she gets kidnappedand wakes up after being

(23:57):
kidnapped in a room, chained upwith a body, and there's no this
is, I wouldn't call us a raperevenge movie, because it
doesn't have any that kind ofcontext to it, although it's
implied. Then she finds aftershe escapes, this is the
beginning of the film. Shefigures out that this, whoever

(24:20):
this guy is. There's a networkof girls and women around the
city that have been kidnappedand are being held prisoner. So
she forces him to take her tothese different places, and he
uses his knowledge of who thesewomen are to his advantage a
little bit. And some shit goeson, and it's, it's actually

(24:41):
pretty good, pretty solid film, not comfortable. I wouldn't rec
if you're if you don't likeliking the rape revenge theory
sounds like a really bad idea, right? But if you haven't
watched the, if you don't watchthose films ever, you might want
to avoid this one, even though.
It's it's just more implicit.

(25:02):
It's not explicit. But if youenjoy women kicking the shit out
of guys who have done wrong, that's pretty good scenes in
this one.
Fantastic. What's the the year2015, okay, so fairly recent,
and this is on prime and AMCplus found to vengeance.

(25:28):
All right, guys, how about wetake a little break and then
when we come back, we aretalking about Reality Bites,
yeah, but not the movie. Allright. How about we take a break
and when we come back, we aretalking about teachers or
schools? Do?

(25:53):
At the Fisher Price, schoollearning is just part of the
fun. It's 11 to12 times. 12 time for lunch.
Where's the teacher playground?
Look, she's jumping rope. Whowants the seesaw?

(26:16):
The Little People school withpull out playground from Fisher
Price. You?
And we are back, Eric, I thinkthis was your sub genre pick.
Yes, yeah, it is schoolteachers, and it was entirely

(26:38):
for a reason, because I gotsomething going. Oh, this what I
want to talk about, this movie.
What does it have? It takesplace in a school, you
know what? Let me just jump inright here and say, You keep
saying, also, I did this for the100 and everything. If you're
not a long time listener, you'retalking about the 100 Days of
Halloween, which is a thing thatyou and a lot of people do,
which is a movie a day for 100days before Halloween, and it

(27:03):
has to be a movie you have notseen exactly, which is great
getting harder and harder, Iimagine.
Yeah, I was like we werescraping the sides of the
barrels, not yet the bottom.
Facebook talk page. Eric thenlists all of those movies. He
only talks about two or three ofthem here,
yeah. So they take a lot ofepisodes. I know some of you
would appreciate that manyepisodes, but

(27:26):
okay, Eric, I'm gonna give youfive minutes for you to talk
about your school or teachermovie.
Sounds good? Okay? This isschool of fear, or, as I found
out, very hard to look up titleon anyway. Il il gyoko, me,

(28:00):
Smile.

(28:22):
You. Oh, Thank you. Oh, you'rewhich is part of the new Severan

(29:18):
high tension Roberto Bava boxset. Oh, cool. This is from 1989
so a little bit you've gotRoberto Bava Demons, demons two,
Devil fish blade in the dark, all kinds of stuff written by
Roberto gondes, who wrote no wayout, not that one snatch, not

(29:39):
that one macabre, that oneRoberto gondes as well. I I
don't know why I was namedtwice. Interesting. Moving on.
Giorgio stignati, who wroteCannibal Holocaust and log live,
long live. Robin. Hood andsummer affair, happy, happy

(30:01):
films, all acting. Alessandraasaya. These are mostly people
you've never heard of, becausethis was a made for TV movie. My
shadow is your shadow in the bigdream. Gina Hebert is in it, but
one name that is known as NaraDaria Nicoletti, who's in opera

(30:23):
tenebre phenomena, Inferno, yousee a pattern deep red shock,
mother of tears, and a whole lotof other Italian horror films,
but obviously an Argentofavorite. So movie starts with a
nice, solid, Dark and Stormychase scene with the don't know
if it's a teacher or a student,at this point, running from

(30:48):
something. You don't know whatthey're running from, and end
up, you hear voices yelling forher and stuff and the strong
winds and rain and but she'srunning underground, so it's
like the greats light. It'sreally, really well done. She
eventually gets to what lookslike a great she thinks she gets

(31:09):
out of and she does not. It isobviously not on the level of
Suspiria, but this is a reallystrong opening that's just image
and lights and music. That'svery cool. Cuts to a shot of
some girl giggling in bed, and Idon't know why she's giggling
yet. Eventually we'll figure itout, but not in any direct

(31:33):
manner. There's weird, creepysinging of this group of
students in an Italian schoolsinging a lullaby, man. And if
this is what they had for theirschool uniforms, they were mean
to these kids, because it lookslike they must just had a giant
rack of them, and they all gotto put on a jacket, because

(31:55):
maybe half of them fit. The restare insanely large. None of them
look too small, but a bunch ofthem look too large, and it's
the same the girls and the boyswear the exact same outfit,
jacket, tie, shirt. A newItalian teacher shows up, she
gets some shit for dressing tooprovocatively, while the video

(32:18):
vice principal is being creepyabout it. So you get the idea of
casting of this lady.
She's very Italian.
It seems like kids are startingto disappear. But are they?
You're not entirely certain. Ifit's a planned thing. Is that a
group thing? Is there someteacher doing weird shit. The

(32:44):
there's references to playing agame, and all the kids are
always kind of they'll neverfigure out what our game is and
giggling about it. Okay, so mythought this point is, what is
going on? Will we get answers, and will they be any good man.
There's some real bad, practical, specific effects in

(33:05):
this at times, and it's gotaspects that do not age well,
but nothing too outrageous, justthe the teacher
when she was a kid, it soundslike was attacked and raped by

(33:25):
people wearing what looked likemascot costumes for whatever
reason. What, what you thinkwould tie in, but it really
doesn't. But she is made to feelvery ashamed about this and
doesn't want anybody to knowwhat happened to her. And that's
kind of the stuff that's like,Oh, that's not good. So it's a
good film. It's well done. Thebhava, of course, it looks cool.

(33:50):
The stuff is interesting, theacting strong. It's not a new My
God, it's a great, lost, whatever. But it is of the bhava
ones I've seen, one of hisbetter ones, demons, is far more
entertaining, but this isactually a better made movie.
Couple of short notes. I do wantto throw out real quick the

(34:12):
composer, because the music isamazing. This guy named Simon
Boswell, with 119 credits, including shadow, grave, stage,
night, dust, devil, Lord ofillusions, the dark, fantastic
from this year.
Let's see what else again.
Yeah, if you're curious aboutthis one and look it up, it's

(34:34):
easier to find under Robertobava's name than it is to find
under this title, because it'sjust not listed. It might be
now, after it's been out on discfor a little while, but School
of fear and you'll have to watchthe movie on the discs, as far
as I can find you.
Said that was from 89 Yeah, that's interesting.

(34:55):
Okay, I was wondering if like, because it's set in 89 is. Just
a style thing that the jacketsare oversized because,
I don't know, they do have theshoulder shoulder pads going on.
They're trying to indicate maybea style. I don't know well, it
was shot in 89 so I wouldimagine that that is what, at

(35:17):
least some private school in thearea had those uniforms. Maybe
because it it's, yeah, it lookslike, whenever you watch a
British film, they've always gotthe school uniform. So that's
just what it was. At some pointthey went, these are really
dumb. We're gonna do schooluniforms. Let's get something
nicer. We're Italian,fashion forward.

(35:39):
Vanessa, you want to go next?
Yeah, absolutely giving you fiveminutes. So I went with a film I
hadn't seen yet, but was, likealways on my list to get around
to, which is 2019, littlemonsters.
Lieutenant, sir. Why are wehere? It's zombies again,

(36:01):
fast ones are slow ones, sir, slow.
Thank god they're slow.
Next stop, Pleasant Valley.
Oh Teddy, we having a super funtime on our trip. I want you all
in the line in front of me, andaway we go. Why are we stopping?

(36:25):
Must be something in the way.
What is it? Miss Caroline, areyou okay?
Yes, but we scared. Whoremembers how to play tag? Well,
those funny looking people outthere are it,

(36:50):
oh my God, I don't give a shit.
What'shappening? We're all gonna die.
Are we gonna die? Miss Caroline,No.
As part of the game. The zombiesare not real. It
is a bit scary. Whatare we doing? We're scared.
What's the song we can sing? Ifyou're happy,

(37:16):
we can't stay here indefinitely.
I'm not going anywhere. You'rebigger idiots than I thought,
and I thought you were both thestupidest people I've ever met.
My job is to keep you safe. Stayhere until I get back.

(37:41):
That kind of behavior isunacceptable. This is five years
old, and if you can't useappropriate language with a five
year old, I'm going to have toask you to attract it to him and
wait forus. How do you like it? Oh, God,

(38:02):
what have I done?
What's that? Oh, I got caught inthe middle of a jam fight. Don't
taste it, okay, not to be confused with the 80s
little monsters with the kidfrom Wonder Years. So this is

(38:22):
starring Lupita Nyong'o, who has36 credits. We would have seen
her in us. Black Panther. Shewas a voice in the wild robot
and quiet place. Day one.
Alexander, England, 28 credits,Alien Covenant and Gods of
Egypt. Josh Gad 98 credits, Olafand frozen and diesel. La

(38:46):
toraka, who's 13 credits, I knewhim as a little boy in Ginny, in
Georgia. So and this is, this isset in Australia. Well, if
you're Zodiac on Netflix, maybeyou would damn wild. This is set
in Australia. Dave is a washedup street musician who is

(39:08):
constantly fighting with hisgirlfriend Sarah. In an opening
montage, they scream at eachother everywhere, including
grocery store on the street, athome and at two of her birthdays
in a row. They finally break up,and he ends up crashing on the
couch of his sister, Tess, alongwith she has a young kid, so
he's there with his nephew,Felix. He is very selfish and

(39:31):
inconsiderate, constantlycursing and being a bit of an
ass in front of his nephew. Tesswarns him to pull himself
together, but late one night, hedecides to get Sarah back,
dressing Felix up as Darth Vaderand basically tripping him out
to his ex's apartment with aproposal scrawled on a pizza
box. They bust into Sarah'sapartment to catch her having

(39:53):
sex with her coworker and have along, lengthy conversation with
them basically Nate. And stillkind of technically having sex
in front of the kid when theyarrive home, tus is ready to
kick him out, but Felix begs forto let his uncle stay. Tus
reluctantly agrees, and he istold to take Felix to school the

(40:14):
next day and help out around thehouse. There he meets Miss
Caroline, his teacher. Felix'steacher, David is instantly
smitten and offers to chaperonea field trip the next day at the
field trip, things take a turnfor the worse when Miss Caroline
is given special treatment bythe children's TV star Teddy MC
giggle, who is filming a live TVshow at the petting zoo they

(40:35):
have gone to. She seemsdisinterested in David, and it
turns out she also has a fiance.
Meanwhile, next door at a USmilitary facility, the zombie
test subjects have gotten looseand have taken over. They are
now heading to the zoo whentheir tractor, with all the kids
on it that's doing a little tourof the petting zoo, runs into a
zombie Miss Caroline decides totell the kids, it's a big game

(40:56):
of tag, and convinces them toplay along with her as she leads
them to safety into the giftshop, the film plays out with
David and Miss Caroline keepingthe little troop of kids safe,
despite Teddy McGill also beingin there with him and losing his
freaking mind, they create aplan to escape right as the
military intends to blow up thewhole facility. This film is so

(41:16):
freaking cute. Holy smokes. Itis great. This is such a good,
feel good movie. It's definitelygot the zombie rom com vibes
that you might have seen inShauna, the dead. But of course,
we're in Australia. My onecriticism is, there's too much
wanking off. I don't care forit. I don't need to see it. Does

(41:37):
not add anything to the film forme by the end, but you really do
love the main character by theend, despite him being absolute
trash at the start, it's a verycool change. There's a nice
touch getting Olaf to be thedecrepit children's presenter. I
think they do a really good jobwith that. And lots of Taylor
Swift, pretty good stuff withthe kids singing cute songs in

(42:00):
terrible situations, little bitof trivia. Tagline, playtime is
over. Originally, the producerscouldn't get their rights to use
Taylor Swift's shake it off inthe film, as they were denied by
the record label. Lupita Nyong'ois a huge fan of the song and
saw as a pivotal part of thescreenplay, which led her to
personally get in touch withSwift and explain why the song

(42:22):
was important to her and thenarrative to which switch swift
granted her the rights. Wow.
It's impressive. Be able toreach a person like,
I mean, like she was far enoughalong, probably in her career,
that she was able to reach outto her, but that's very cool.
The film is dedicated to afourth size son, Spike, whose
first day of kindergarteninspired parts of the story, I

(42:45):
don't know. Oh God, Spike playsa school kid zombie in the film,
and it premiered at Sundance in2019 it was acquired by neon and
Hulu. You can stream it on Hulu.
I really like this film. Ienjoyed this one a lot, too.
Yeah, although I don't remembera lot of wanking, but maybe
that'sjust, it's pretty front loaded
in the beginning.

(43:09):
As soon as you said this, I Iwas thinking of a completely
different movie. Which one hadElijah Wood as a teacher, when
the zombie kids? Oh, I don'tknow. I thought that's the
movie. Now, I do remember thismovie. Once you started talking
about the Darth Vader scene, Iwas like, Oh, yeah. This is a
very cute movie. It's very cute.
What did you watch this on?

(43:31):
I watched it on Hulu. Okay, soit's still free streaming out
there. If you want to check itout and you have a Hulu or
Disney subscription, please dowhatever it is. Now sounds like,
yeah, yeah, it's a lot of fun.
It's a nice it's a nice changeof pace for the other content
you could be grabbing from ourreal world or

(43:51):
show, or even from our show.
Usually, yeah, that's true. Wealways talked about the update.
No wait, hold on.
Okay. Well, you guys, I have gota treat. Oh, no, five minutes.
And I'm talking about from 2008the happening. I

(44:25):
were we supposed to stop here?
What's going on? Youcan't just leave us here, sir,
we lost contact with whom, everyone, what.
There appears to be an eventhappening.

(44:52):
It's some kind of attack.
The first. Stage just lost somespeech. Claire. Claire, the
second stageis physical disorientation.
The third stage is fatal. I'mscared. Elliot,

(45:23):
okay, the attacks are spreadingBoston, Philadelphia, Maryland.
It's all over the country.
Authorities are now feeling thata terrorist group Being
responsible is becoming less andless likely.
She says, everyone's deadoutside. You

(46:00):
run. Through the doors.
This really be happening. INo, no. What

(46:26):
Written and directed by M NightShyamalan, who wrote and
directed the sixth sense, unbreakable signs, old trap. He
also wrote Stuart Littlestarring Mark Wahlberg from The
Basketball Diaries, BoogieNights, The Perfect Storm,
flight risk. And also was MarkyMark of Marky Mark in the Funky

(46:48):
Bunch. Also stars ZooeyDeschanel, who's on 146 episodes
of the new girl. She was analmost famous Your Highness and
dreaming wild. And JohnLeguizamo, who's in Super Mario
Brothers, which I've talkedabout, whispers in the dark,
Carlitos way and spawn also inthis is Ashlyn Sanchez, Betty,

(47:08):
Buckley, Jeremy strong and AlanRuck. You guys, I'm always
looking to give M NightShyamalan a second chance. He
knocked it so far out of thepark with a sixth sense and
unbreakable that I was able tolook past all the really stupid
stuff and signs the village wasa little harder to get past. And
although I like Lady in theWater for how broadly it winks

(47:28):
at the hero's journey, Iunderstand that it is a deeply,
deeply flawed film. But thehappening, like all of his film
films, it's got a really hookyopening scene with people acting
weird in Central Park, and thislady just takes her long hairpin
out of her hair and stabsherself in the neck with it. And
then we cut to a constructionscene where some guys are

(47:51):
talking at the base of abuilding under construction, and
someone falls from the top andlands in front of them. And
they're horrified, of course, but it seems to be, you know, a
horrible worksite accident. Andthen another person falls, and
the camera follows the guys onthe ground as they look up the
building, and workers areliterally throwing themselves
off the top floor to theirdeaths. Also, we know Mark

(48:11):
Wahlberg is in this movie, and aconstruction site seems like the
place we should meet thisfucking MOOC, but no, we then go
to a high school in Philadelphiawhere we meet Elliot Mark
Wahlberg in the form of afucking science teacher. He's
talking about the mystery of1000s of bees disappearing when
he is pulled away and warned ofan apparent terrorist attack in

(48:32):
New York and school is canceled.
So I will say so far, this movieisn't horrible, as long as you
can get past Marky Mark as afucking science teacher. Or he's
like, What do you think? What doyou guys think about the piece
Where's all the peace and and heand his wife, Alma, who is

(48:53):
having problems with flee on atrain, along with a friend,
Julian and his daughter. Also, when we meet Alma, she is a
fucking cunt. I'm not sure ifwe're supposed to feel any kind
of sympathy for her, but she'sintroduced as a very high
maintenance problem right offthe bat, and then we're supposed
to go with her on this voyage ofloosening up. But it is
impossible, mostly impossiblebecause she's always a Chanel so

(49:16):
you just fucking hate her rightoff the bat. They end up being
forced off the train, and Julianends up dead, and we're still
not sure exactly what's goingon, but it is actually pretty
fucking creepy. There's a scenewith a dozen people hanging from
a tree and dead peopleeverywhere, but nobody is
hurting anybody. They are alljust committing suicide, and it
seems to be catching. Well, turns out that the plants are

(49:39):
emitting some kind of suicidepoison and the wind is carrying
it on its breeze, and you're notsure what to do with this
information. First of all, theonly way to show this in a
fucking movie is to showbranches or long grass flowing
in the wind. But it's not ahurricane or anything
interesting, so it's just a softbreeze blowing through leaves
and no. Matter how hard hetries, Shyamalan cannot make

(50:00):
that look creepy. But thatdoesn't stop Wahlberg and
Deschanel from overacting everytime a light breeze comes up. I
guess this is a natural disasterkind of movie, except without
the disaster porn footage, andit just fucking drags. Also, if
there was like an earthquake ora tornado or something, we know
there'd be a climactic scene andthen things would kind of go

(50:21):
back to normal, but that doesn'thappen here. The poison just
stops being made, I guess. Howwould we ever know it can't be
shown? So the movie ends withsome similar stuff happening in
France, I guess, setting up aThe Happening franchise.
Happening. Mark Wahlbergadmitted that he regrets working
on this movie, but said, Youcan't blame me for not wanting

(50:42):
to play a science teacher, atleast I wasn't playing a cop or
crook. On June 8, 2008 daysbefore the first few reviews
came in, Shyamalan told The NewYork Daily News, we're making an
excellent B movie. That's ourgoal, which is always bad sign
when you say this right beforeyour movie comes out,

(51:03):
unlike a large part of the castof actors, Zoe bischnelle,
Zoe declared that it has beenone of her favorite productions,
and that people did not know howto appreciate the concept of
natural terror the productionthat the Production used because
it was strongly inspired bymovies like the birds, which is

(51:25):
a good movie. Yeah, I wish thatthey were inspired by that part
of the birds. This is thehighest grossing film to receive
a D. I should note that the filmhas a 17% on Rotten Tomatoes,
nice. I've got a couple ofreviews here. Kyle Smith of the
New York Post said no one willwatch any of shyamalans recent
films twice, but a movie thatfeatures Wahlberg suggesting

(51:47):
everyone tried to outrun thewind can barely be watched once.
That's a good quote,so I'll leave the other review
off. That was my movie, Thehappening,
man, you did exactly what I did.
I gave this movie a second.
Wait. Was this your second timeviewing or your first time?
Yeah? Yeah. I tried to watch itagain because I was like, Wait a

(52:08):
minute. I must have been tooharsh.
It's about comeon the wind and people killing
themselves. It's gonna be good.
Holy smokes. Is this a terriblefilm based on a book or
anything? Because it seems likeit'd be a cool book. I don't
knowwhy he keeps saying it's a B
movie either. And it doesn'thave any B movie aspects to it.
The acting. It's like, was therea director there at all? They

(52:32):
these two people are worseactors due to his directing.
It's horrible. It's like, atleast Zooey Deschanel did the
new girl, you know, she has somekind of range, but not in this
movie,no. And Wahlberg, I think can be
fine. I liked him in rock star, and I liked him in the other

(52:52):
guys, you know, he's got a senseof comedic timing and but this
one, in one of the notes I didnot put down here, Shyamalan
says that he wrote the film forMark Wahlberg. He was who He
wanted in this role.
Insane, absolutely insane. Yeah,I saw a clue. I haven't seen the

(53:13):
movie because don't hate myselfthat much. I'll go watch another
al Adamson film. Thank you. Butthe scene was just some line
delivery by Mark, and it was anexample of this is bad acting,
and it's so unbelievably bad.
He's like, I am being sincere.
Is what he should be saying, because that's what it looks

(53:36):
like he's saying. You're notactually saying lines, he does,
I'm sincere,yeah? It feels, yeah.
It definitely feels like, ifthere was any emotion, any
character gave that. Shyamalanwas like, no, no, no. Pull it
back. Pull it back. Pull it No.
Pull it back.
Like there's like the lobsterand stuff, where everybody's got

(53:59):
that really strange linedelivery, but it's obviously
deliberate.
Yep, so Yeah, canyou imagine Mark Wahlberg and
the lobster?
Yes, yes. Please do it withoutbreathing so much Mark.
Just make him silent. Just havehim walk around looking like a
platypus, and then turn him intoa platypus, it'd be fine. Hey,

(54:22):
I'm a platypus.
Vanessa, you've got a choice forthe next sub genre.
Oh, well, there was a movie thatI wanted to watch a couple weeks
ago didn't quite get to. So I'mgoing to shoehorn a topic, haha,
Reality Bites. I would like todo films where reality might not
be what it seems.

(54:44):
Okay, excellent. I can, I candig this.
All right. Well, that brings usto the point where we say thanks
to everybody who's out thereliking and sharing posts, who's
on the strange ends radio talkpage, who's commenting under the
YouTube who's on. Donating moneylike Kevin Bird did. Thanks so
much, Kevin. We reallyappreciate that. We call it

(55:07):
value for value. And the ideais, if you get any kind of value
out of this show, give somevalue back. We can't tell you
how much that is, or even whatit is if, if what you can afford
is telling a friend about thepodcast. We really, really
appreciate that.
Spread the word. Make sureeverybody who's like on the talk
page is also subscribed to ourYouTube page or something like

(55:28):
that.
Yeah. Also, I've got some bignews coming up on my books. I
have got a artist who is doingall new covers for all the
books, and they all kind of tieinto each other, and they will
be having the originalscreenplays attached at the end.
And if you don't want any ofthat stuff, that's totally fine.

(55:50):
But if what you're looking foris like a first edition, these
ones will not be available afterthose ones come out, and they
should all be out by the end ofthe year.
So well, so be like, do you readKL young, you put the whole
thing together?
Well, yeah, Vic Tillman has gotme going. It'd be great if you
could do something on thebinding that you know kind of
all matches up when they'restacked next to each other. And

(56:11):
I was like, motherfucker, so Iguess that's what I'm doing. I
love it. So anyway, all right, guys, that is it for this
episode. We will be back in 14short days, and we will be
talking about reality biting, yes, okay, see you next time.
