Unknown (00:03):
Oh, I'm sorry, did I break your concentration?
Somewhere between science andsuperstition?
To show youStrange Aeons. Welcome Strange

(00:28):
Aeons radio shivering over thereis there. Yeah.
icicles hanging from our airover there is Vanessa. Hi,
Kelly, chilly day in my houseyou guys.
almost Christmas everybody awarelast time we recorded it was

(00:48):
like mid summer now it'sJanuary. Yeah. Merry Christmas,
everybody.
Merry Christmas. I hopeeverybody is somehow figuring
out a way to make this work.
Yeah, I hope you guys are havinga good time. In some way. Let me
just throw out this isn't a filmthat I wanted to talk about at
all. But since it is ChristmasEve, I'll just put this out
there as a public serviceannouncement. Remember how much

(01:11):
we love the Santa Chronicles?
Yeah, Santa Chronicles two is apiece of shit.
I heard that it wasn't verygood. I'm so bomb rushed out,
you know, one of those rushedout things well, and also, you
know, the joy of that first onewas a really was a family movie.

(01:32):
And it was all about family.
This one they've stuck a villaininto the story. And it sort of
shows up pretty much. And it'sjust one of those things where
you're like, I don't think thisis what this needed. Is the
villain. A kid? Yeah, it's thekid from for the

(01:52):
Deadpool two. I think I caughtlike five minutes of it. And I
was looking at it going. No.
I really like that kid. Butyeah, he's fun. And he's, he's
chewing up the scenery in this, but it's just such a stupid idea
that it's like no, no, this isbetter. Yeah. So anyhow, that's
not what I wanted to talk about.
What do you talk about? Yeah, give us what I do want to talk

(02:14):
about is, you know, my love forYouTube just grows and grows and
grows. And I was able to findthe entire animated series of
droids from 1985 on there. Oh,yeah. Which is the adventures of
RTD to nc threepio. After our Iguess it's before A New Hope. So

(02:35):
it's in between? Yeah. And it's,it's made for kids. So
go into it with that knowledge.
I thought the animation wasabsolutely divine. It's
made by a company called Nelvanawho did one of my very favorite

(02:56):
animated movies rock and rollposter right behind me.
And it's very It looks very, very much like hand animated
cells, you know, so it's justreally fun and cool. It doesn't
look like the the filmationstuff, which was what was
happening at that time.
cartoons. And a one of the otherthings I thought was interesting

(03:17):
is so this was 85.
And this has a speeder scene init a like a racer scene that's
kind of similar to the episodeone racers Audrey squad racing.
Yeah. And it also has acharacter named Kai Bo Ren.

(03:43):
Which convinces me more and morethat Lucas just made a book of
names man that has passedthrough all all manner of people
and they are just, you know, picking names from this book
because Derek cook then. He sentme a Star Wars role playing game
when they had from from the 80sor 90s, I guess. And one of the

(04:05):
characters was named Mace Windu.
Wasn't the Mace Windu from theprequels and Samuel Jackson, it
was not even a Jedi. Like Mr.
February I understand. You'vebeen hired to do this here. I
bestow upon you my book. You mayonly use names from here
to page and it's like grovedale.
Yeah. All right.

(04:28):
Yeah, that looks really is it?
canon still did that one stay inwhen they did the reworking of I
don't think so. I don't see howit could be. It's very, very
silly. No, yeah. But it was justa ton of fun. I watched all 11
episodes and and loved it. Theyare using all the sound effects
from Star Wars. The music waswritten and performed by Stewart

(04:49):
Copeland at the police. Nice.
Excellent, so I just, I don'tknow. I loved it. I was of
course, too old for it when itcame out.
To watch it What's you knowwhat's super funny, Vanessa?
Yeah, there was an age where Igot too old for toys you
wouldn't know by looking at myhouse.

(05:11):
Clearly, I then fell back intoan age where I was fine with
toys. I don't think I everstopped so you've at least got
that up on me. All right. Well, you know guys go through that
high school macho phase where Iwas like, man, no.
childish thing. I definitelywent through the phase like
girls all I think all do whereyou start to hate Barbies or

(05:32):
dislike Barbies, but I neverliked them in the first place.
So they really thrust upon meand I was like, where the? Why
can't we play Ninja Turtles?
But done it's always waiting tobe played with he's got a staff.
Can you hang out in Barbie'sDreamhouse?
Oh, that's just gonna leavethat.

(05:53):
What did you watch? Yes, soactually speaking of Christmas
films, but um, may notnecessarily live up to the hype.
And I checked out happiestChristmas on Hulu. I don't know
this one. So this one is KristenStewart, Kristen. And Mackenzie
Davis. The guy from shits Creek?
Yes. And and the guy from shitsCreek whose name I can't think

(06:17):
of right now. I think it wascharacter's name but he's uh,
his dad is the son of thatEugene Levy, his son. Oh, okay.
Just Eugene Levy. Um, and it'salso got Aubrey Plaza in it as a
secondary character. But the theconcept is it's a lesbian couple
and Mackenzie Davis is takingKristen Stewart home for the

(06:40):
holidays to introduce her to theparents, but it actually isn't
out so has to hide herrelationship as soon as they get
there. Um, it's it's kind ofbuilt like this really cute See,
Christmassy but sort ofprogressive film. And part of
the reason why I wanted to watchit is I had been helping a
little bit on this really coolproject called jinxin deal is a

(07:03):
holiday special, which is aholiday special by these two
amazing drag queens that's goingout on their personal channel on
Vimeo and they are starring inthis film to Oh, they're like
some side characters that theyrun across.
There's a problem with thismovie. Here's a glaring problem

(07:25):
with this movie.
In most ROM coms you want acouple of guys together and like
fix everything and in this oneyou really don't. Mackenzie
Davis is the fucking worstgirlfriend she's just the
fucking worst and then AubreyPlaza is like her other ex who
got fucked over and is treatingChristian sir really nicely and

(07:46):
like hey, I totally understand Iwent through some of this stuff
before and you're like these twopeople should be together
with Mackenzie Davis is a veryattractive lady I think she's
incredibly hot but no it's notworth it not worth it is madness
don't you can do better personso anyway, I'm happy his

(08:07):
Christmas a lot of people reallylike it I just have that problem
that particular problem is thisa pass or a
it depends on who you are. Iguess it's from the look of what
I've seen in the trailers yeahDean and I might like it more
because shits Creek you willyou'll like his character
because he is so yeah maybepeople in this goofy and weird

(08:31):
and fun to watch. I don't knowwhoever else is in it I that's
the reason we're gonna watch itI think if you like holiday
movies and you like somethinglike love actually then yeah,
like definitely check it out butjust be aware it's not a perfect
film. There's it's okay to bemad at it. It's it's fun
throughout but there aredefinitely moments where it's
likethat was my I wonder if we're

(08:52):
going to see you know, thesekind of movies were really the
territory of the HallmarkChannel and now I don't even
know if the Hallmark Channelstill exists. You Yeah, Hallmark
Channel has a streaming they'vedone their first I think the as
of this year, their first gayMark special to which they have

(09:15):
had a huge backlash from thereligious community that mostly
watches Hallmark Hallmark. Idon't know what they're just
community safe space hallmarkmovies. Yeah, people will be
able to take comfort in knowingthere is a Colonel Sanders there
romantic drama going on manyfilmer.

(09:42):
Have you seen theMaya Lopez, Colonel Sanders.
Lopez looking likeit's in a very, very different
movie. You know? I've seenbetter gray hair effects
on a porn movie.
where a guy was supposed to bean old man? Oh no, man. He

(10:03):
shouldn't be sitting on a top ofa silver stallion with wind
blowing his crappy looking grayhair as he's holding the woman
off the side. That's sort ofwhat this looks like it wants to
be as far as the image the I seebut
but they get a lot of press outof it. I mean, it's a mini film

(10:25):
I I'm curious. I'd like to seeit. Yeah. That sounds insane.
And how long is it? It's it'snot full movie length, or they
call it a mini film. Soit's amazing says short film out
loud or even just the money andwalk out the room.
Yeah, no, I would. I would watchthat. Sure. Sure. Why not?

(10:49):
recipe for desire. That's whatit's called. Yes, that's right.
Yes.
bucket of love. At one point, the bad guy grabs Harland
Sanders and said something likeI'm coming for you chicken man.
But you know, our extra crispy.

(11:10):
Anyone want to watch him andnever
got to be watched? So you gowatch the Spanish ghost movie?
Oh, a Spanish goes. Yeah,another 2021 called don't
listen. really seen this one?
I've not even heard of thiscamera. It's It's my problem is
I've got shutter integrated intomy Amazon. So it's either prime
or shutter? I'm not sure. Butit's close to being good. No,

(11:34):
I'm the Spanish createincredible horror films that the
de Lucia have great short filmsI shot from Spain is insane. And
orphanage was there. And it'sit's not quite that good. But
it's pretty good. It is a storyof a

(11:57):
guy who who his son is drawingthe future. And they don't
realize that for a while andthings go wrong, they move into
a big giant house and things gowrong. So it's very
it's cookie cutter in itsapproach to being a story where
they have the problems, and thenthey bring in the experts. But

(12:18):
instead of being EMF, they'redoing audio, or forgot what
that's called, but they'relistening for audio noises. And
it's fun. But it's not.
It's not, you know, I'm glad Iwatched it. But it's also
another one that's definitelynot going to sit on the top of
the list by the end of thething. But if somebody came up

(12:40):
to me and said, I thought it wasfantastic. I could see that. You
know, it's interesting, becauseI'm wondering, you know, we're
always looking for a new angle, and something like a ghost film
or a zombie film, she's actuallyvideo game that just came out,
maybe even a month ago, whereeach person plays, you go into a
haunted house, and you play withyour friends. And there's maybe

(13:02):
like four people. And each onehas like a different device. And
when you have the audio thingand you're walking around, and
it is a view, there's a VRversion available as well like,
your stuff. And you can onlytalk to the other people by
pressing a button. So you caneasily get murdered and attached

(13:25):
by things which happened to me,and then be walking around in
your ghost forum, trying tolearn your friends and being
able to tell them that but it isvery creepy. And it does do that
auditory thing where instead ofrelying on a visual scare,
having an audio scare, I thinkthat's it's interesting that
these things are happening atthe same time. Yeah, well,
that's like Silent Hill, allthose years ago, you get they,

(13:48):
in order to find the ghosts, youget that little radio, right?
Whenever you get near them, itmakes this terrifying.
And then you're looking becauseand they don't appear
immediately. So you hear thenoise and you go, where are they
someone's gone, or the hell isit?
But this kind of combines that.
But then it also uses likeheat detection cameras. So it's

(14:09):
not just the audio, which isbetter. I mean, it's good. I
would I would say watch it.
Interesting question. Do youguys believe in ghosts? Yes.
Yeah. I want toI've had enough weird shit going
there. Maybe. Buthear? Yeah. I want to

(14:35):
feel like I've seen things. So Ifeel pretty. Camp ghost. Okay,
what am I you killing? I'm notsure. Okay. I'm in the middle of
the night when I hear a weirdnoise in the house. I absolutely
believe it.
In general, genuinely don'tthink I'd be back.
Because it's Christmas. Idecided to go with a rewatch of

(14:58):
the classic holiday.
Angel Heart wasand I hadn't seen it since.
Let's see, it came out when Iwas 17. And I saw it in the
theaters. And I remember likingit. And I watched it again. I
still like it. I think even eventhen in 87 I was, I felt like it

(15:19):
was a very obvious movie. Imean, there's a twist at the end
that I feel like you see comingabout 15 minutes into the film.
But everybody runs around as ifthey don't know it, and they
sell you on not knowing it andeven even dinero as Lewis cipher

(15:43):
pretends he doesn't know what'sgoing on well enough that you're
like, Okay, I'll I'll go alongwith everybody. And I thought it
was really really strong. No, Imean, if if a bit obvious. I
remember liking it, but I havenot seen that since probably the
mid 90s. Man, it is a sweatymovie. Yeah. New Orleans, right.
Yeah.

(16:04):
That seems to be the I'd imagineit's sort of like rain in
Seattle. If you see rain andmovies, it really doesn't rain
like this like that very oftenaround there. I'm guessing New
Orleans make it the same thingwhere it's hot and sweaty, but
it's maybe not that hot andsweaty mostly. Yeah, this looks
pretty grimy.
But also also very sexy. Youknow, this was the Lisa bone a

(16:27):
scene that got her fired fromThe Cosby Show.
Yes, ironically, Bill Cosby hada moral problem with her doing
that seem like oh my god. Wow,that didn't age. Well. You a
little shit. Yeah. Yeah. I likedit, though.
And I believe that that was onprime. So I think it's out there

(16:48):
if you want to give it a tryagain. Nice. Cool. Well, also
available? Well, actually, Ithink it's on shutter right now.
I think it was on prime. Ichecked out a Christmas or film
I've been meaning to get aroundto and the poster. It's been
very intriguing. And I finallychecked out, which was better
watch out.

(17:09):
Oh, I recognize that title.
That's the one with thebabysitter. The psycho.
Right? Oh, yeah. Boy, man abouta tonal change in the film. He I
was not a fan. Oh,unfortunately, I think the
acting overall was pretty good.
But there was just somethingabout it that just felt like

(17:29):
unconvincing at every turn. Andmaybe it was because everything
shifted so quickly. But even thehouse I was like, this doesn't
feel like a real house likenothing about this feels real to
me. And I don't know, I justwasn't, I wasn't super into it.
I wasn't really thrilled withwhere it went. I was stressed as
hell the whole way through, especially once I kid sort of

(17:50):
takes off the mask. And I waslike, and the best friend
is an incredibly good actor. AndI know I've seen him in a bunch
of stuff since he's just sellsit and he has so little to work
with. He's just the douchebagbest friend. And he really is
such a good character in it. Butum, yeah, it was fun. I remember

(18:14):
liking this quite a bit, although it did also set off all
my anxiety. Yeah, I do rememberthat. That very end scene being
very satisfying. Yeah, yeah, that that did have a good moment
for sure. Um,yes. And the boyfriends were
were a lot of fun. Yes, it was.

(18:35):
Those were some really goodmoments. I think it was just
little things like there's athere's little things that get
introduced, like there's apencil underneath the carpet
that gets introduced and theshines on it for frickin ever at
the beginning. I'm like, I getit, we're gonna come back to it
again. But I thought, Oh, it'sgonna be used to like, fight off
something not to hurt somebody.
And that's just I don't know, itwas a little things like that.

(18:58):
That bug me was my experiencewith it was very different
because I started to watch itand had to stop for some reason,
like 1015 minutes and gone. Oh,well, this looks like a fun
little home alone kind ofChristmas thing. Yeah. Go back
to watch. Holy shit.
It's very mean spirited. Youknow, and maybe that's something
I don't like about certainfilms. I think I'm starting to
figure this out. There you go. Ithink that I became more of a

(19:21):
fan of it because the directoror maybe the writer, director, I
mean, that was shot in Australiain the middle of summer. Really?
Yeah. Oh my god. They did great.
Yeah. That girl looks kind ofsweaty at the end. Actually. I
was like, man, she's she reallywent through something. And it
was just super low budget. Ithink it was his first feature

(19:42):
and it got him it's a very goodfirst feature. Yeah, like
serenely good in that sense. Um,ya know, it has a lot of good
going for in definitely out of Idon't. I feel like Christmas
horror films have a rough timegetting it right. So out of all
the Christmas horror films I'veseen It's up there.

(20:05):
Well, switching subjects alittle bit unlike Kelly, and you
having your Christmas movies youjust presented, I watched.
There's a company called humblebundle. Oh, yeah, I know. What
they do is they do promotionalthings where they package you a
lot of times games, but thenthey also do graphic novels and

(20:28):
comics and stuff, which I use. Ibought a lot of like, I bought
the whole run of spawn throughthat, and the whole run of which
blade and turns out, I didn'teven realize I purchased the
whole run of The Walking Dead.
Oh, hey, so I'm on Oh, I'm gonnafinish this. See how it
finishes. It finishesbeautifully. Really? Okay, on
the last couple, the last issuehad me like,

(20:54):
it's so good. It was a emotionallevel well done. And it makes me
even more annoyed with thewriters of the TV show. Where
Rick Grimes is the heart andsoul of the comic, almost from
from issue one to issue what Ithink is like 170, for some

(21:14):
weird, random last issue. And heis the heart and soul of that
ending. And it is so well done.
And then the series just kind oflike cast a guy who I think he's
got the charisma to pull it off.
But then they write all thisside characters as being far
more interesting. Like, no, thisguy should. And if they had done
that, I think they would havehad a longer run have a much

(21:36):
better show. Interesting. Andthe whole thing is wrapped up at
the end by Carl. Oh.
Tell them what, three, threeyears ago whatever project?
Didn't these hard copies thenthe Humble Bundle sells PDFs?

(21:58):
Oh, yes. Get or whatever?
different formats. So yeah, I'drecommend hop on their site,
just subscribe to theiremail. And every few months are
something that because they sendsomething new maybe once a week,
and most of the time, it's likegames and coding books, all this
kind of Yeah, coding books, sojust ignore all those. But then

(22:20):
every few months one shows up.
And the most I've ever spent wasprobably $25. And that would
have gotten me the whole WalkingDead. Plus probably 15 other
Wow. novela really bundle ashitload of stuff. Doesn't it

(22:41):
often go to charity, the comicbooks go to the comic book
Defense Fund. Yeah, I don't knowthe games do as well like,
because I met the Humble Bundlepeople on through my game life.
Oh, sure. At one of like thePaxos or no, no GDC and they
were very cool people. Verycool. Yeah. So I think a lot of

(23:01):
it's for charity. If not, if notall of it. Yeah, I basically
loaded all of them onto my iPadand and kind of forgot.
What did good surprise, man. Ineed to know how that ends. But
you know what shouldn't be asurprise that it ended strongly
though, because Kirkman is youknow, solid writer. So I just

(23:23):
got tired of the show. And Ithink I i think i clocked out
when they kill the draw aboutthe show or the comic, the comic
issue. 100. I think they callGreg. The Asian kid. Yes. Yeah.
I'm totally forgetting him.

(23:44):
Yeah, but I was just like,Glen Glen. Yeah, like, this was
unnecessary. I know. But it wasa rough moment. And I was
laughing when the TV seriescaught up to that moment. And
like, my best friend and herfriend were like, Oh, my God, I
heard rumor that this is whatmight happen, but they wouldn't.
I was like, why you guys arestupid. They're totally gonna

(24:06):
kill him.
And then they did it. And theywere screaming and crying. And I
was like, yeah, wait, why wereyou you can't be surprised like
you every indication This isgonna happen.
Yeah, there's an interestingessay at the end that Kirkman
wrote about finishing up theseries and Oh, he wanted to make

(24:27):
sure he didn't do what I hedidn't say this, of course. But
what I thought reading it dowhat the TV show has definitely
done and gone way beyond itssell date. You know, I mean,
yeah, like I really wanted to doa comic book that reached 300
issues. Then I wrote out myoutline for beginning to end and
realize there's no way in hellI'm ever reaching 300 issues

(24:48):
without padding a bunch ofstuff. So I'm just gonna end it
where it should end. That'sreally nice. Yeah, and he's
pretty good about that. Like,I've I've read a number of his
series and you know, theyThey usually do feel pretty like
satisfied like invincible. Yeah, that's what it should and has
done well and I also think thatimage I mean, if this was a
Marvel comic you just get a newwriter and new artists and you

(25:11):
would keep going you know imageallows their creators to just
say that was the story I wantedto tell. Yeah, image is so
brilliant about that and that'ssomething i mean it's it's just
like blumhouse it's like such arisk when you pick up an image
comic it's either gonna be greator terrible but
but yeah, like they I love therisks that they're allowed to

(25:33):
take yeahwell cool Shall we take a little
break you guys come back and weare talking TV holiday specials

(25:55):
fix up your house when you cometo calm strange wholesale has
got it strange as the carpet andflooring to bless low prices
just for you.
Go visit selection come seemines in West Monroe.

(26:29):
Back access was kind of yourchoice.
In order it was my choicesuggested by other Mr. Lovely.
Yeah, so we're doing Christmasepisodes Christmas TV episodes.
So I guess this might be ashorter episode. It'll probably

(26:52):
be a little shorter just becausethe nature of this is not going
to give us a lot to talk about.
That can't be the one I pickedthere's a ton of trivia This is
way too much to talk aboutbecause I my episode is Doctor
whose last Christmasseems to be the problem.

(27:42):
Of course doctor is is I saw I'mnot a doctor who watch is his
last name, whohe's just called Doctor Who.
Yeah, I don't think he has anyother kind of name shouldn't be
doctor home.
Doctor Who sounds better thedoctor. I'm just kidding. That's

(28:02):
my guess.
It's real bad. Yeah. Anyway, this came out in 2014. The end
of the 2014 season, which iskind of a tradition for doctor
who they do Christmas episodes.
Sometimes they tie very stronglyinto the series. And sometimes
they're very much a one off kindof episode. I forget the name of
the one I was going to talkabout, but I started watching it
and it was very definitely partof the series because it was a

(28:24):
tenant's last season. So theydid these big the big time or
something that was called tau islike it's really it's a very
Christmassy a lot of snowaround. But that's about it.
Yeah. So I went to lastChristmas, directed by Paul
wilmshurst who did the wonderfultitled which means something

(28:46):
completely different in the UKpiste on the job.
For those who don't know pistemeans drunk in the UK as opposed
to not angry at nobody's gonnapost law and order UK and just a
ton of uk tv riffin rip Griffinis written by Steven Moffat.

(29:09):
Who's wrote Sherlock was his theshirt recent Sherlock and he did
coupling and a lot of Dr.
Haley's Well, the main reasonthe new series reboot did so
well. Yeah, he's also kind of acontroversial guy. He ran into
some trouble withfemale characters and female
casting, but seems to haveworked that out because he's

(29:30):
still working on the show.
Stars This was Peter couple daysseason as the doctor and boy
he's done a lot was does thatmake it as a new season? or?
Yeah, it's probably 2014 the newseason rebooted. And I think
it's 2000. Early 2000. Yeah,somewhere right around there.

(29:52):
Which is when I watched Ihaven't watched very many of the
original but Yeah, wow, thisthis should have got
the rotten tomatoes. So youknow, here we are.
Real quick for this is 92 fromthe critics and 80 from the
crowd. And that's like anoverall series, this particular
episode overall and that seriesis 100. And like 95 or something

(30:12):
like that very, very highlyrated
capacity is going to be in the2021 Suicide Squad is the finger
Hosie. Really. Wow. The adorablePaddington to. Yes. And the also
very good Torchwood.
I know him for my very rudeshower. Oh, yes. He was like in

(30:35):
it, I think. Yeah. That was oneof the main ones. Yeah, a lot of
cursing. And Jenna Coleman playsthe companion. You might know
her from Captain America. TheFirst Avenger is Connie, and
British show called Victoria andplaying Santa Claus. Nick Frost.

(30:55):
So good man, he is great asSanta Claus.
The doctrine clarifies theirlast Christmas. They're trapped
in the Arctic base under attackfrom terrifying creatures who
are sort of elleni this is funbecause it one thing Doctor Who
does really well is there scaryepisodes. They have some scary
ass episodes, especially theWeeping Angels.

(31:18):
And this is a nice little creepyone.
It starts off withthe companion Jenna running into
Santa Claus on the roof. So it'sa nice exchange between her and
there is elves that are they'retrying to explain what they're
doing. And it moves to aoutposts in the Arctic. There's
a strange thing where there'speople, their faces are covered

(31:38):
with things and you see themstart to figure out
trying to figure out what'sgoing on. The idea is these
creatures get into your heads.
And if you think about them, they start to eat you. Mm hmm.
So it's this great scene wherethe woman who goes in there
starts playing this weird song.

(31:59):
So she starts dancing, and it'sfun and goofy looking and silly.
So that is, and they useillusions to trap their victims
in this way. So once you startthinking about them, you get
yourself into a loop start todestroy you. And Nick Frost kits
as a sim to say that again, because he has really fun.

(32:19):
There's a lot of wonderful dreamlogic in this episode. And
things that you Oh, that's astrange choice. And then you
watch the rest of the episode.
Oh, I see what they're doingthere. That's is that because is
most of this the actionhappening inside somebody's head
then? Sort of? Okay. Yeah, kindof phased out with Kapolei.
During that his season mightbecause I didn't like him. But

(32:41):
because we did a cable cut andDoctor Who was no longer not
currently available in anystreaming. Yeah, so I haven't
watched it since but watchingthis episode, I'm going I've got
to start watching again. It isso good.
It's funny, but it's also kindof creepy. That see Pope some
weird facts. So this is doctor.
So if I wanted to go intotrivia, I could talk for several

(33:05):
episodes. Yeah, this has beenaround since what 58 or ever is
when the first season started.
Disappeared almost entirely inthe 90s and then rebooted very
successfully in the 2000s. Let'ssee. Here's a weird one. Michael
truck sign of Patrick Troughton, and brother of David Tryon makes

(33:27):
his first appearance in DoctorWho. Patrick played the second
doctor in the classic series ofDoctor Who's and has appeared
throughout the series eversince. They do make strong
references to alien they evenactually like say this is like
that movie alien. And this iswhere things get weird. As far
as you know people finding weirdtrick This is where shows like

(33:49):
Doctor Who and Star Trek andthat are kind of go Okay, you're
stretching.
Let's see the film was directedby aliens directed by Ridley
Scott. Scott was a trainee setdesigner who was assigned to
design the Daleks. However,Scott had to back down because
of a schedule comment wasreplaced by somebody else.
Like reaching Yeah, that is sometrivial trivia Exactly.

(34:15):
Or like, one of the women on theshow went on to be on Game of
Thrones. And at the end, whenyou see her after everything
happens, she's looking at a listof things to do go watch all of
Game of Thrones.
This however, was the lowestChristmas Day rating for the

(34:37):
show in 11 years. Wow. However, once it came out, it exploded.
It became incredibly popularafter it came out but for some
reason, it just was not watched.
And going on. Yeah, weird.
But because like having lived inthe UK, this is like a cultural

(34:59):
event.
This is like the thing you do.
Everyone on Christmas days sitsdown and watches the new doctor
who's special. Wow. So is itthere's a lot of rumors about it
being considered. So thisdoesn't sound like maybe it's as
true as I thought that it's verymuch considered a children's
show.
No, it's wonderful. No,everybody watches. It's like a
family show. It's like whateverybody sits down to watch

(35:21):
each week. Wow, that's cool.
This was before it was written.
I wasn't sure if Jenna Colemanwas gonna be returning as the
companion. So Moffat wrote acompletely different ending. For
this. And daring. They actuallycast the lady I was talking
about it does all the dancingwas cast with the concept. She

(35:43):
might be the new companion.
And then Jenna came back saidno, I'm coming back for another
year.
He had a different ending readyto go though, because he in case
she did decide to come backbecause he wanted her to return.
And so that was some of thetrivia and stuff I said, you can
get really a minute, even moreand more and more. So I will

(36:06):
just say, this is an awesomeepisode. If you don't watch
Doctor Who and you like sci fi,go give it a shot. I don't know
if I'd recommend starting withthe older stuff. Because you got
to be really forgiving. Yes.
Yeah, that is anything beforethe 2001 Yeah, I haven't seen
any of that. Because it's justit's a different beast. Yeah.
It's kind of like Star Trek. Theoriginal series is a lot

(36:28):
different feeling than somethinglike DS nine. If you started off
with your Star Trek worldwatching discovery. I'm not
going to recommend you watch theoriginal Star Trek for until you
really dive into love. And it'sexactly exactly until you're
ready to do the whole likecompletionist Yeah, yes. And
well, much like you. I alsochose a well known well loved

(36:53):
series, and I went with aChristmas TV special from X
Files.
This one is called how theghosts ghosts Stole Christmas
was the night before Christmasin a house full of ghosts,
Mulder and Scully and theirspecial guest hosts, Ed Asner

(37:16):
and Lily Tomlin would show theway. The doors are all locked
and they're here to stay.
X Files and all new Christmasepisode Sunday at nine eight
central on Foxfrom December 13 1998. And it's
from season six, Episode Six.

(37:38):
If you guys don't know what theX Files is, I don't know.
It was recently rebooted a wayearly actually. It's funny
because on IMDB, if you look upanything Xbox related, it's
really tough because it's notlisted in 1993. It's up at the
top of everyone's like, resumesbecause it's 2018. Now so yeah.

(38:04):
So yeah, to two special agents, one of which, who believes in
mysterious crazy things, and onewho believes in science and yes,
they go into work. Anyway, so asa director, this episode is
actually written and directed bythe series creator, Chris
Carter. His first film was cameoby night, a TV movie. And then

(38:27):
he did a couple of episodes oflike Magic World of Disney, and
something called brand new life.
He did like four episodes. Andthen I and then like, blown? No,
then he I think it was this. Andonly after this has he done
stuff like Millennium which had67 episodes and lone gunman mode
pretty recently, but recently asshe doesn't want

(38:52):
I don't know, I don't know.
These people have sporadiccareers because it's really
tough because I spent so manyyears doing The X Files that
even when I looked up feelingAnderson gillean or Gillian
Anderson. I always said Jillian.
Yeah, but I don't know if that'scorrect. It's hard to know.
And David Duchovny, like theyboth have really interesting

(39:14):
careers where basically shewasn't in much of anything until
X Files. And now as obviously, since when in some great things,
which by the way, if you havenot seen sex education or her
stint in the crown, holy cow,you always go back and watch
retro diaries. You want to senda lot more of Boulder. And yeah,

(39:36):
I didn't realize so I never sawred shoe diaries, but I didn't
realize it was going on. Therewere 66 episodes of it. And it
went on from 92 to 96. So thesame time he was doing X Files,
he was also doing the show.
Jeez, yeah, I didn't know. Thisis crazy to me. I don't know
rich. I know what Richarddiaries is, but I've ever
watched it. I thought I know Ialways thought he just narrated

(39:57):
it. He does.
It even as a narrator and he'sin a few episodes, still that's
like a lot of extra side sideJake giggling
but he's so David company he'sbeen in 191 episodes of X Files.
Before this he did Twin Peaksand he was agent Dennis slash

(40:21):
Denise Bryson, one of myfavorite Twin Peaks character so
lovely so fucking awesome. Andalso was in don't tell mom the
babysitter's dead and Beethovenas Brad. After he went on to be
in California keishon andquirinius. That is a hell of a
show. Californication is a hellof a show. I never watched it

(40:42):
because I think I was so mad. Hewasn't
like held a grudge. It's gotproblems. he's a he's a boy on
the show would not be as popularnow. If it was made an hour at
all. He is a sex is a very largeportion of the early season.
Oh my god. Um, yeah, it's reallyinteresting, because Gillian is

(41:06):
and Gillian Anderson. Someonewill correct me a person
Anderson was in 217 episodes. Soobviously, they're just like,
last was it just the last seasonhe wasn't in? Or was it the I
think the last season neitherone of them are in. She was she
stayed on for a season or twoafter he did but I. We watched
and I watched a little bit afterhe left, and we stopped

(41:29):
watching.
Her attorneys really felt Yeah,he was just it just it. bikers
talking about earlier with thewalking dead. Somebody should
have just said, You know what, let's just just add this. If you
want to do this with some newpeople, maybe let's invent a new
version. Exactly. This is one ofthose shows that like I grew up
watching pretty religiously, religiously with my friends

(41:50):
because it was spooky anddifferent. And other. And I'm so
there's so much I could talkabout with this series. So I
didn't I purposely didn't lookup too much. Because I was like,
I don't want to talk about exfelons at large. I'm just going
to talk about this episode.
Because there's just so much totalk about. This episode
weirdly, only has four actors init. So it's a very stripped down

(42:11):
episode. It's got kind of justtwo locations, mostly just one
location, the other locationsinside of moulders apartment.
But it takes place in this bigmentioning house. So the other
two actors who are in it are ofcourse by the titles name the
ghosts. And that's played byLily Tomlin. Which is awesome.

(42:36):
If you guys don't know or maybeyou've seen her in grace and
Frankie or nine to five, or oneof my favorite roles by swing as
Deborah Federer. She replacesother secretary.
Oh, and I did not know this. Shewas the she's Miss frizzle and
magic school bus and has alwaysbeen I did not know. I mean,

(42:58):
she's been in all of themanyway, and Asner has been in
408 things is the male ghost inthis um, it was originally
written for Bob Newhart andactually kind of written as a
piece to show off Lily Tomlin alittle bit but it was they were
hoping that get Bob Newhart whoturned it down.

(43:19):
But as nurse been around, MaryTyler Moore Sharon's down
nothing. Yeah, literally when Ilooked him up. Oh my God. He's
been in everything and usingturn down anything. Like Yeah,
he does video games he does. Andhe was in Boondocks. He was an
American Dad. He was in the StarWars video game. I was just
like, What haven't you done?
Sir? My favorite part is when hewas on a an interview. I think

(43:42):
it was on Adam Carolla show orsomething like that. But he just
just went off and startedtalking about how there were no
Jews in the two towers when theywere hit by the
data was like, Come again.
It was like oh, and as nerds andnutjob like

(44:06):
old crazy, man, I'm surprising.
unsurprising to be honest. Um,so the plot of this episode is
super fun. It's a monster of theweek episode, so it doesn't
really pertain to much of theoutside plot. Mulder asks Scully
to meet him on Christmas Eve atthis kind of large abandoned
Manor. He explains that duringChristmas during Christmas Eve,

(44:31):
online on nine in 1917, a youngcouple living in the house had a
kind of lover's pact. So onekilled the other and then the
other killed themselves veryRomeo and Juliet. Because they
couldn't stand the idea of notbeing together if one of them
died. They didn't want to bealone in the afterlife. They
want to spend eternity together.
So every Christmas Eve theyappear and often try to invoke

(44:53):
slash disturbother couples, potentially into
maybe possibly murderingthemselves. It's hard to know.
It's hard to say. It's possibleto predict these things. And
Moeller wants to go and stick itout school. He's like, Yo, I
gotta like wrap some presents, could you like, not right now.

(45:15):
And then her car keys likemagically disappear and he's
like, I'm on I'm off in thehouse. And she's like, I guess I
I'm going in the house now too, because I have nothing else I
can't do anything else. Um, oncethey get into the house, and
it's very much like a big spookymansion, he kind of thing

(45:36):
cobwebs and big clocks andbeautiful ornate rugs, and the
door slams shut behind them.
They don't seem to care. I don'tthink they even checked to see
this locks. They just are likethat, no big deal. They hear
some sounds and they follow itup to the top floor the whole
way up. School you doing thewhole? Well, these scary

(45:56):
stories. These stories areactually just figments of our
imagination and blah, blah, blah. And if you date it back to
blah, blah, blah, blah. I waslike, Oh my god, I forgot I
forgot that this was a big partof the show. Holy cow. So they
make it upstairs and they end upin this kind of library area.
And things start to get a littlecrazy. The ladder that they use
to kind of climb down into thissunken library disappears,

(46:20):
things are shifting around, andthey start to hear a thumping
sound underneath their feet.
They pull up the floorboards anddiscovered two corpses that are
dressed in their clothing. Oneof them has bright red hair.
Very strange. Um, they getpretty freaked out and decide
that they're going to split upto try and find out more of

(46:42):
what's going on. That's sosmart. It's very clever and
really the way to do it. So onegoes out one door, the library
and one goes out the other. Andthis is weird thing where I
think Muller had tried to gothrough the door first and ended
up coming into the oppositeside. So there was like, okay,
maybe we both leave at the sametime we'll somehow break this
spell.
Anyway, but that doesn't happen.
They get separated. So they'reboth in the same room, just not

(47:06):
in the same room with eachother. Moeller is then
confronted with Maurice who askshim Why on earth he's there race
and a fishing cap kind of aspunky old guy is like, Are you
here to film one of those ghosthunter shows? Are you one of
those guys? And well, there'slike, no, it's like, oh, well,
let me tell you, like it's it'spretty neat. And this old guy's

(47:28):
super funny. Super just liketoxin mile a minute. basically
says it's his house. And youknow, it's like, I don't know
why strange people keep comingin here, but whatever. And we
all know he's a ghost, butmother's not 100% Sure. In the
meantime, Scalia encountersLydia, who is they have a kind
of more confrontationalencounter because Scully is much

(47:51):
more questioning and thereforeLydia is sort of like revealing
her ghostliness a little bitsooner. But both ghosts start to
play these head games withMulder and Scully. They are
doing their best to try and turnthem on each other so that
Scully will shoot Mulder andthen molder will, I don't know
what they want him to do. Butanyway, they want them dead.

(48:16):
Mother, basically they do startto do one of those psychology
things but they break theirpersonalities and their worst
fears down. And soMoeller is told, you know,
you're just afraid to be alone.
you're filling the void withthese endless searches into the
unknown to give your lifemeaning. They tell scoli that
she's forming intimacy throughcodependence and her only joy in

(48:38):
life is really proving motherwrong. So they go for some deep
cuts. Um, so then all of asudden, we see Mulder appears
and he shoots Scully, but thenwe also see Scully shooting
mother, and then we watch themcovered in blood dragging
themselves down these stairs andthen out the hallway. Like there

(49:01):
is a lot of bloodsqueaking on along and like, I
think Scully is closer to thedoor than molder. Anyway, like
they're both like both kind ofstopping holding their guns at
each other and they're like, Youshot me know You shot me? loose
like, wait a minute. And hestands up. He's like, We're

(49:21):
fine.
Oh, I guess we are by and thenthey leave. And then we'll there
sits alone in his apartment andschool. He shows up and they
exchange gifts, even though theysaid they would vary speed. This
sounds like the sounds like thisis one of those episodes that
was kind of played for laughs Itwas I think it was to a certain
extent there was there wasdefinitely a lot of really fun

(49:43):
moments. Both Lily Tomlin andAbner just, they were really on
top of their game. They wereextremely funny. They were just
like a lot of jokes about like,Scully saying things about how
you guys, you know, you're notreal. There's not even a
Christmas tree andAt least homely going were
Jewish.

(50:03):
Little things like that. Theyreally This episode was super,
super fun. I think they did agreat job with it. The acting
from Lily Tomlin and Ed Asnerare just great they will bring
it they are not half Harding itthey come fully loaded. They
they both reveal like theirdeath holes. So I think Lily

(50:24):
Tomlin is missing like a hugepart of her stomach and as her
lips up a hat that he's wearingand has a hole in his head and
it's like light just poppingthrough it these perfect holes.
It looks super good. The houseis nice and creepy, the things
disappearing and reappearing.
And you know, those head gamesare pretty fun. The things that
didn't work that well thought itwas there was a lot of logic

(50:47):
rules, going down robot thingsthat just didn't make any sense.
Like I'm not sure why the ghostwanted them to kill each other.
That was never really explained.
I know that's the thing thatthey consistently do. And
there's like a history ofcouples having kill each other,
but not that we don't know whywe don't know what they get out

(51:08):
of it other than getting to belike the most haunted house,
they do make a joke about. Wewere written out of the Gazette
this year.
Like, we're not even the top 100anymore. Um, and like kind of
the whole reason why Mulder andScully tries for doesn't it's
not super clear either. So thatthat's not great. Also, I had
dialogue from Scully justdebunking things as they're

(51:31):
literally just walking around.
The house is so annoying. Itreminds me a lot of Dawson's
Creek and maybe Dawson's Creeksteals this from x miles. But
we're Joey is just constantlydoing these like, really smarty
pants narration straight upwhoever happens to be in
earshot. It feels a bit was abit irritating, but the
nostalgia kind of won me over alittle bit of fun trivia,

(51:53):
watched by 17 point 3 millionpeople on the initial broadcast.
This feature the smallest castand set for X Files up until
season 11. And it was thecheapest episode of the entire
sixth season to shoot. BothTomlin and Asner were fans the
show and Tom Lynn kind of nudgenudge hint hint wink wink at the

(52:14):
production team that should betotally up for doing an episode.
Last but not least, GillianAnderson was very critical of
the fake blood used for theepisode because of the sheer
quantity and how it quickly cancoagulated and form this sort of
gummy bear. Yeah, she was notshe was not fan on it run into

(52:35):
that before age. But yeah, nojoke. I always has a really fun
smell something for me sleep.
Interesting smells. You know ifyou get that Ben nice stuff. It
tastes like mint. Yes. Theyflavored it because otherwise it
tastes like shit. Yeah, itreally does taste bad. What
about Oh, my turn. Well, youguys.

(52:58):
I kind of cheated on this one. Iwould have I would have
absolutely one this episodebecause I chose Episode Two of
Tales from the Crypt and allthrough the house.

(53:21):
to the client.
Now he is shocked up from theman who gave you 48 hours.
Need a little holiday fee? ShallI scan up the man Framed Roger
Rabbit?

(53:41):
You asked for it. You guysscreaming
I have this little number fromSuperman Superman. He sought to
kill you.
But you can count on my directthree deals from the June 10 on

(54:03):
HBO.
Warning strong content Parentaldiscretion advised
that's a good one. I've wantedto see this for so long. I
thought it was a movie until yourevealed it. I was like oh,
that's why I haven't found ityet. Yeah, so from 1989 no

(54:24):
budget or box office. Obviouslyno box office but I could find
nothing for the budget either.
The critics on Rotten Tomatogive this an 82% this particular
story was supposed to be thevery first episode and they
switched it to be the secondepisode. I'm not sure why
because both of those episodeshappened in June of 89. So it
seems a little weird anyway, except that this is kind of a

(54:46):
evergreen story. It is based onthe segment from the 1972 film
Tales from the Crypt. Then it'scalled and all through the
house, which in turn is based onthe original
vault of horror comic booknumber 35 that had this as its
story. Holy cow. Yeah, that wasfrom 1959 I believe. And the

(55:10):
reason I cheated is because thisis basically a 25 minute movie.
It's amazing. It is directed byRobert Zemeckis co director Back
to the Future death becomes herForrest Gump and Castaway, among
many others. It is written byFred Decker, who wrote Night of
the creeps Monster Squad and thefirst two house movies scores

(55:33):
and it is starring Mary EllenTraynor, who has 47 credits
including The Goonies LethalWeapon and die hard. And Larry
Drake, who was the bad guy anddark man and he played Dr.
giggles and Dr. giggleslet me just throw out a couple
other names.
It was produced by RichardDonner and Walter Hill and Joel

(55:53):
Silver. And the music wascomposed by Alan Silvestri. So
it's just this super high budgetshort film. Yeah.
I love this episode, and I kindof wanted to do this kind of
topic because of this episode.
It opens with a woman killingher husband right off the bat
with a fireplace poker and herhusband is Marshall bell. You'd

(56:15):
know him as soon as you saw him,but I always remember him as
quato in Total Recall.
Yes. And it's Christmas Eve. Andshe's, she grabs the fireplace
poker and he's like, here Giveme that poker, and she
collaborates him over the headwith it. The sharpen goes blank

(56:37):
right into his skull. And hecollapses on the table. And she
immediately calls her loverwhile she's looking at the last
will and testament says I didit. You know, she has to leave
message and everything and thenof course they're very young
daughter comes down the stairs.
Hey, Mommy, mommy's Santa'shere. I heard a thump.

(56:58):
If you're not aware, Tales fromthe Crypt, was very much as gory
as it was, was very much atongue in cheek.
sarcastic humor horror. Soall of this stuff is played
very, very broadly. So mombrings it back up to bed and
says, you know, he's not hereyet. And he won't come if you're

(57:18):
awakened. And the little girlslike, Well, what do you want for
Christmas, Mommy, and she'slike, I already got what I want.
So she as she goes downstairs, she wraps him up in a tarp and
drags him outside where it'sfreezing, cold and snowing and
all that. And of course, whileshe's outside, she misses on the
radio, a public serviceannouncement, talking about a

(57:40):
escaped mental patient who isdressed like Sarah was, and
everybody should lock theirdoors because he loves to kill
women. Sure, so she misses allthat.
She drinks the body out, anddrags it to an old well, where
she intends to throw her deadhusband in. But in typical Tales

(58:03):
from the Crypt fashion, hesuddenly lurches alive again,
grabs her by the ankle, and shewhacks him this day, making sure
he is very dead.
But just then, the derangedSanta, he's gotten the axe from
the wood pile. she avoids it andescapes him running inside, and
she calls the police and it'sthis great moment where she's

(58:26):
talking to the 911 operator andsaying she's got all this going
on and and they're like, what'syour address and she's about
Sarah Addison. She looks outsideand sees her dead husband, you
know?
She just says like, Fuck, Ican't have the police here. So
she just hangs up.
Right after that the the Santabashes his arm through the

(58:48):
window she's standing next toand tries to grab her and she
wax and she gets the axe awayfrom him. She wax him really
hard. And he falls over dead.
So the phone then rings twiceand she's like, what's going on?
What's going on? So she answersit and it's the police. Now I

(59:09):
don't know if even in 1989 thepolice were just making calls
saying Hey, lady, lock yourdoors escaped mental. This but
that is what is going on here.
And as he's telling her this, you can see the wheels in her
head. And she's like, Oh, whatis he doing? Oh, he's carrying
an axe and everything and becareful. He could kill someone
she's looking out at her deadhusband. She's like, ah, got an

(59:31):
idea. And so she goes out therewith the axe and very comical
scene and tries to make it looklike the axe killer killed her
husband. But she can't look athim while she's swinging so she
keeps missing him finally sheshe does look straight at him
and buries the axe in his head.
Gets a bunch of blood all over.

(59:53):
Wood. She looks back then to thedead Santa. He's not that
Oh no wait, it actually is shegoes running inside to call the
police and tell them that thishas happened. She's She's acting
very scared. Oh my God, thisguy's out there. It's killed my
husband and everything. And I'mlike, Where is he now? And she
goes, he's said, she looks outthe window where he's supposed

(01:00:15):
to be laying dead and he's notthere. And she's like, Oh, shit.
Soit's all just very, very, very
black humor. She ends upbasically, you know, locking all
the doors, but her daughter hascome down because she heard a
thump and kind of ends with thedaughter holding the hands of
the deranged Santa's saying, look, Mom, Santa is here. And we
get this just amazing bloodcurdling scream from the mom.

(01:00:39):
And then it goes, of course tothe cryptkeeper Don't worry,
kidneys, you know.
Oh my god, it's so good. It'sjust fucking gorgeous looking at
very little trivia on anythinglike this, except that it was
actually William Gaines, who wasthe publisher of Tales from the

(01:01:01):
Crypt. His son was the newpublisher and the main producer
of the series and he was thereon set and really cajoled
Zemeckis to get that scream out.
At the end. He was just like, wegot to get a bigger screen than
this. And so Zemeckis finallygot her toe. What do you watch
it? You're like, that is afucking great scream. If you
heard that in the middle of thenight, you'd be like, holy shit,

(01:01:24):
somebody's getting killed. Theone little piece of trivia I
found was in 1994. Tales fromthe Crypt released a Christmas
album, called have yourself ascary little Christmas. Nice,
nice.
Horror Christmas songs. Okay.
And I'm like, I have to findthis now. This sounds like a
blast. sleigh bells. And yes, they the house.

(01:01:51):
That is whenever somebody saysthe Tales from the Crypt HBO
original series that is theepisode that pops in my head
first. Yeah. Without a doubt.
It's so good. I mean, you couldcompletely understand why they
wanted to launch with thisbecause it's just so strong. And
you know, it's got a realhistory, you know, with the
actual I haven't seen that Talesfrom the Crypt movie and so long

(01:02:12):
that it made me want to findthat and watch this segment. See
how well they did it? Yeah.
So very good. Yeah. So there'sthree things on your your
Christmas Day, you guys canbring the family together and
watch I think, or maybe it's soChristmas Eve, and you just want
to warm up some hot cocoa andget on your Christmas letter and

(01:02:36):
