Unknown (00:01):
A super Kelli, super,
whatever the internal thing is.
Chris (00:06):
This is the
Supercalifragilistic, awesome
Disney podcast, where, each weekwe discuss, you guessed it,
Disney
Kelli (00:13):
things you know, things
you don't know, and things you
didn't know you needed to know.
Well,
Chris (00:17):
as Walt would say, the
way to get started is to quit
talking and begin doing. Oh,wait, wait,
Kelli (00:21):
wait, I can do this.
Okay, please stand clear of thedoors. Por favor. Man tenga,
say. Alejaro de las puertas, welcome aboard Disney. Fam.
Chris (00:33):
Hello out there, Disney
fam, this is Chris and I'm
Kelli. Welcome to this week'sepisode of I don't know maybe
it's your favorite Disneypodcast, I hope it is. What ears
are we going with today?
Kelli (00:44):
Oh, today I am wearing
the the Minnie Mouse ears with
the little hat. The little hatthat I thought were Mary Poppins
ears when you showed them to mein the store, and I would call
them, topic adjacent, okay,yeah. Topic
Chris (01:01):
adjacent, well, just like
the old days, I don't think I
know what your
Kelli (01:04):
topic you don't know my
topic and not yours. Your topic
adjacent, this is a roadthrowback. You didn't ask. You
just came home and we're like, let's record. You didn't even
ask. I'm
Chris (01:15):
glad you were ready when
I said to
Kelli (01:17):
Hey, hon, did anybody
listen to us this week? They did
Chris (01:21):
shocking. I know, Rocky
Mountain, Virginia, okay, the
Roanoke metro area famous forbeing the gateway to the crooked
road colon Virginia's heritagemusic trail. Wow. I saw the
crooked road, and it made methink of that Agatha, which is
Road, yeah, not the same. Thisis fiddles and banjos can be
(01:45):
heard throughout the town, okay, all the live music venues.
That's fun. Yep, Fruitland,Idaho.
Kelli (01:52):
Oh, now how cute is that?
What kind of fruit did theygrow? This Pierce
Chris (01:56):
apple orchards, oh, named
for the apple orchards that
surround the community. The cityslogan is The Big Apple of
Idaho.
Kelli (02:03):
You don't think about
that. You know, Idaho is known
for the potatoes. Yes, you don'treally think about about
orchards.
Chris (02:12):
Yeah, I think of
Washington, the state for
potatoes, apples.
Unknown (02:17):
Oh,
Chris (02:20):
so a conversation we had
Lawrence Kansas, home to the
University of Kansas. Yeah, no,I know Lawrence once called the
cradle of basketball, becauseJames Naismith, who invented
basketball while in Springfield,Massachusetts, brought the game
to Kansas and served as theirfirst basketball coach. Wow,
obviously the Jayhawks have astoried basketball Of course. I
(02:43):
mean, yes,
Kelli (02:44):
I did know that. I mean,
not like the gamecock women's
basketball team. Yeah, that'sright, but by the way, but if
you're a guy, I'm sure you likeKansas, Jayhawks are also great,
Chris (02:58):
sure. And then lastly,
I'm gonna go ahead and apologize
to the fine folks in this town, okay for mispronouncing, I'm
sure, the name of their town,Chateau Gwei, Quebec, Canada.
Canada. We love the Canadian.
Kelli (03:15):
We love Canada. I want to
say thank you Canada, not for
nothing, but we love beingawesome and having the ketchup
potato chips and, you know, justthink,
Chris (03:25):
among other things, among
other things, that makes Canada
great maple syrup. It's, youknow, it is. They are more than
just their ketchup flavor.
Kelli (03:35):
Yes, our calls for syrup
is about to go up, and
Chris (03:40):
things don't go well.
Their health care is gonna go upthis nestled between the Chateau
way and St Lawrence rivers.
Okay, it's a it's cuz it'scalled an off Island suburb of
Montreal, and so I looked intoit, I'll be honest. I didn't
know Montreal was an island, butit is. I
Kelli (03:55):
did not know it's on an
island. Okay, we don't know
enough about Canada. We'retypical Americans. Just stupid
all the time. One way street, one way street. Us Americans.
Oh, you
Chris (04:08):
want to talk about what's
going on on Main Street? Let's
hear it, hon. Okay, so we knowthat Mandalorian and grogu are
getting a movie, full featurelength movie, okay, yes, look on
your face. You
Kelli (04:26):
were fully aware. Yes, we
know that. Yes. So glad to know
that. Currently
Chris (04:30):
scheduled, I think, for
May 22 next year, 2026 Okay, and
don't grow goo on their wildadventures, okay. Well,
Smugglers Run the ride atGalaxy's edge is going to get
mando and grogu storyline. Oh,
Kelli (04:48):
so people might actually
want to ride
Chris (04:51):
it. I think lots of
people love to ride it. It's
just not overrated.
Kelli (04:57):
It's overrated unless
you're in the pot. Pilot seat.
It's overrated. And I've testedit. If you don't push your
buttons, things still happen. Soit's, it's overrated. Okay, oh
Chris (05:11):
boy. So, so lots of news,
by the way, coming out of South
by Southwest, which is going onright now. There's a, there's a
Disney stage and everythingthat's going on there. Yeah. So
lots of announcements. So let'ssee John Favreau and a couple of
Imagineers, Leslie Evans and ASAKalama, talked about what
(05:33):
they're doing here withSmugglers Run and John Favreau
says one of the cool thingsabout Disney is how we can tell
our stories in so many differentformats. We're already taking
mando and grogu from the TVscreen to the movie screen, and
at the same time, Dave and I.
Dave Filoni is the other guythat works on mando and I are
working with ASA to bring thisstory to Disney Parks too,
(05:56):
working alongside theMandalorian team, the Imagineers
captured scenes from the for theattraction from the movie set
while the movie was beingfilmed. Oh, that's fun, yeah,
and you excuse me so you'll seesome beloved Star Wars locations
aboard the Millennium Falcon, such as a trip to Cloud City.
(06:18):
Now, that should excite you, because I know how much you are
a Star Wars nut,
Kelli (06:25):
yeah. I mean, the Cloud
City does sound fun. Is this
like where the Care Bears live?
Chris (06:33):
We're stopping right
there. We're not gonna go over
any further along.
Kelli (06:35):
I've never heard of
another Cloud City. Well,
Chris (06:39):
the bears you're thinking
of, live on the forest moon of
Endor,
Kelli (06:44):
Care Bears. No, I'm
thinking of actual Care
Chris (06:47):
Bears. Care Bears, I'm
thinking of, actually, it's a
different city in the clouds. Do
Kelli (06:51):
the teddy bear? I call
them teddy bears. Do the teddy
bears from Star Wars live inthis cloud city? They live on
the forest moon. Well, obviouslyin the forest moon of indoor is
a very different place thanCloud City. Duh, duh, duh. Cloud
Chris (07:06):
City is when we first met
Lando Calrissian, right?
Kelli (07:11):
The big green blob guy,
Oh, dear God, stop
Chris (07:17):
the this is not going to
be a retelling of what happens
in the movie. It's more likeparticipating in something
that's happening just off camerafrom what you see in the film.
Okay, that's fun. And the coolthing is, they launch it at the
attraction on the exact same daythat the movie launches in
theaters. That's
Kelli (07:34):
cute. Okay, that's a cool
thing. I'm for that. That all
sounds really cute. I want tohear more about this Cloud City
one day, not today, not tonight, not today. I'm not there
tonight. I'm not there tonight, but one day I would like to hear
about Cloud City.
Chris (07:47):
We just watch Empire
Strikes Back. That sounds like a
good idea.
Kelli (07:51):
I have plans whenever you
wanted to do this.
Chris (08:00):
So this is the most
Disney thing ever. The Flower
and Garden Festival has releasedthemed trash cans for Epcot.
Okay, you know, I actually lovethe description that blog
Mickey, where we get a lot ofour news put out for this, an
Epcot festival and a trash can.
Is there a more iconic pairingin all of Walt Disney World, not
(08:23):
just used for holding trash, theversatile Epcot trash can is
also a table, a way findingtool, a solar powered trash
compactor, and a friend to thearound the world participants
who started Mexico
Kelli (08:42):
trash cans at Disney are
a big deal. They are a big deal.
But, you know, they sell littlesalt and pepper shaker trash
cans they do at every festival.
Yeah, there's somebody somewherethat has collected all of all
salt and pepper shaker trashcans, and when they die, 1000
their kids are going to be like,we got to get rid of all these
trash cans, and they're going tomake millions of dollars off of
them on eBay, but so you mightas well theme them if you're
(09:06):
going to sell the trash cans.
Chris (09:08):
I mean, the whole idea of
Disney trash cans have taken on
the life of their own is, ohyeah, awesome. I mean, so Disney
was always very intentionalabout their trash cans, yes.
Well, then the trash cans takeon sort of a life of their own,
and now they're like, Okay, well, we've got to release
themed trash cans for theseevents. I
Kelli (09:25):
mean, it's a thing in
dream light valley as well.
Like, I try to have my trashcans at every, you know, 50 feet
or so, just like they do in theparks. And so I've got a lot of
trash cans around my island, just and because they come in
pairs, right? Like, you don'tjust put one trash can. You get
like, two trash cans, becausethey always they're next to each
other. So, yeah, no, trash cansare a big deal. Well,
Chris (09:48):
one of these is orange
bird themed, Oh, and one is
spike the bee theme, which areboth obviously mascots for the
people gonna
Kelli (09:54):
be taking their pictures
of trash cans, for sure. I mean,
because we are the complete.
Lee, sane and normal.
Chris (10:04):
Um, BDX droids are coming
to Walt, Disney World. Okay, I'm
expecting you to be like overthe moon now a BDX droid, BDX
droids. So
Kelli (10:17):
these are different from
BB eight droids or r2, d2,
droids, or c3, po droids.
Listen,
Chris (10:25):
look at me. You're gonna
get some kind of a surprise
later. That was amazing. Sogood. These are the I was first
introduced to, these BD typedroids playing the Star Wars
video game, the one that CalCastus is the lead character in,
right? Yeah, fallen order, Jedisurvivor those because a little
BD droid is sort of his helperalong the way. Okay, well, they
(10:48):
created these actual BD droids, like three or four of them. I
think they named three of them,Huey Dewey and Louie. Or at
least that's fresh, or at leastin testing, they named them that
right for the park inDisneyland. And they would sort
of air quotes, free roam, okay, okay. And you can interact with
(11:08):
them, and they're just as cuteas can be. They're, they're sort
of kind of got, like, duckbodies, sort of, and they're
super cute. But they so theyreleased them, like, two years
ago, and it sort of tested them, and then they were part of the
Star Wars festival days, or, youknow, whatever they call them.
May the Force Be With You daysor whatever, last year. But they
(11:29):
weren't in, you know, Orlando, and they and nowhere else. Well,
they're gonna, like, kind of goon a tour. They're gonna be at
Orlando coming soon, and thenyou're going to be able to see
them in Tokyo and in Paris, when
Unknown (11:43):
you say that they have
duck bodies. Do they have little
feet? Little duck feet? Well, sohow they walk? You know, yeah,
exactly. Do they have a littleduck head? Their head doesn't
really look like a duck, okay. Imean, they have duck feet. I
guess someone could say
Chris (11:59):
a chicken too. It's sort
of a sort of a bird esque body
type with
Kelli (12:04):
webbed feet. Don't really
have webbed feet either. Even
resemble a dozen.
Chris (12:10):
I think if you looked at
them and watched them walk, you
would say, okay, I get it. I getit.
Kelli (12:15):
It's duck esque. Yeah.
Jason, duck adjacent, it's Dougadjacent,
Chris (12:23):
all right, so fun times.
They're coming to to Walt DisneyWorld in Orlando, okay? Ride
vehicle concept art has beenreleased for the car's
attraction coming to the MagicKingdom.
Kelli (12:36):
Okay? And this is
supposed to be behind, like Big
Thunder Mountain, yeah, I
Chris (12:40):
think that area there,
part of what they're taking out
the river for right again, alsorevealed that South by Southwest
Pixar chief Pete doctor andImagineer, Michael hungen
suggested a completely new typeof ride vehicle would be needed
for the car's attraction. Thereit's versus like the one in
(13:00):
Radiator Springs out inCalifornia, okay, okay, because
that's a race track, you know, here they are going to be
leaving Radiator Springsaltogether, and it's kind of
going off road. Okay, okay. Sofrom from Disney, they said our
primary goal is creating anemotional experience for the
guests, for the for this car'sattraction, we needed a new type
(13:23):
of ride vehicle. No one buildsthese, these in a factory,
because it has to do so muchmore than just carry you from
one place to another. We need acar that conveys feeling when
you ride into it, when you ridein it interesting. The team took
a trip out into the Arizonadesert and jumped in a real off
road vehicle to see what what itfelt like driving over rocky
(13:43):
terrain. And from there, theImagineers worked with a
motocross company to build areal dirt track to race around
on, and then took that data backto been creating to begin
creating the ride vehicle.
Kelli (13:57):
I mean, I'll just say I
hope that this off road
situation does not remind us ofthe dino land.
Chris (14:05):
I know cars, I know but
see now some people love that
ride. Yes, those people do nothave boobs.
Kelli (14:10):
Okay, so I would just
say, because if you're if you're
carrying any kind of weight inthat zone, those rides are not
that much less fun. Much lessfun. Yes, I don't like having to
hold my chest in place while ona ride. Okay,
Chris (14:30):
just in case there are
people that listen, that have
never seen you in a picture oranything
Kelli (14:37):
saying, just saying,
Okay,
Chris (14:39):
well, I'm glad so that's
that's the news. Okay,
Kelli (14:41):
great. Thanks son, well
done.
Chris (14:45):
Okay, moving on to
Tomorrowland. We've mentioned
that we're headed back to WaltDisney World this summer, okay?
And a lot of ways it's gonna bevery similar to any other trip
we take, it maybe a day or twolonger than our typical trip. I.
We're gonna do some but we'regonna do some different things
this year, specifically to tryto celebrate the fact that I
(15:06):
turned 50 this year. Right oneday, allegedly, yeah, so the
Disney World website has a pagecalled enchanting extras, so
that's where I pulled all theinformation from this segment.
Okay, took a spin through theretoday see if there's anything
(15:27):
specific we might want to try tomake this trip extra special,
other than taking the down daysthat I've always wanted to take
that nobody ever right? Uh huh, yeah, look. And so if you go to
this page, there is a ton of whyyou're looking at me like that.
I'm not
Kelli (15:43):
looking at you in any
way. Looking at you in any way.
Chris (15:49):
There's a ton of stuff to
take advantage of, more than I
actually thought would be onthis page, honestly, with
varying price points. Andthere's no way to go through all
of these in one segment. So hereare the ones that stuck out to
me in no particular order. Now,there are a few that we've
actually done segment full onsegments on before, okay, I
believe one was dive quest. Oh,well, you Yes, you've actually
(16:12):
done, I've done dive quest, andI think we did a full segment on
that's about $250 you get toactually go diving in the living
seats aquarium. 1,000% 10 out of10 recommend, yeah, the arrow
file. That's 25 bucks. Yes, youdid a segment on that. Segment
on that. I think I want to
Kelli (16:31):
try it. Oh, mister, I
don't like heights with I don't
try the arrow spot. I
Chris (16:35):
ride roller coasters at
Disney. Oh, yeah. Okay, wild
Africa trek, which I thinkyou've talked about before,
that's $230 okay, and so there'sa segment out there on that,
savor the Savannah, which Ithink you've also talked about
before, which is $200 yes, got afull segment on that. And I'm,
you know, considering some ofthose, right? Okay, so here's
(16:58):
some additional ones. Now thisvery first one which come right
out. We're doing this one. Okay,we're doing the both of these.
Okay, these are the fireworkscruises. Okay, these are 449
four and $50 okay, and so perper per cruise, per cruise, but
you can have, we, we won't havethis movie, but you can have up
(17:20):
to 10 people on your pontoonboats. So these are pontoon
boats, and there's one for theMagic Kingdom, and there's one
for Epcot. Okay, I think I sawthe one I first got turned on to
this when we were standing onthe bridge at Epcot, between the
UK and France, and looked down.
You can see the people. Therewere boats. And I'm like, I want
Unknown (17:41):
to be down there eating
snacks on a boat. What eat
snacks on a boat in
Chris (17:44):
the water, watching the
fireworks? So the idea here is,
you, you don't need park ticketsfor the day, and you board one
of these pontoon boats at anynumber of embark destinations.
So like maybe Polynesian or theWilderness Lodge, or some one of
(18:04):
those places for the MagicKingdom, and say, the Yacht Club
for the Epcot version, okay, you're going to go on a nice
little, you know, tour on thewater. I think the Magic
Kingdom, when you kind of go outtowards the Wilderness Lodge.
They show you a couple thingsout there, and just a nice, sort
(18:25):
of evening cruise on the water, which just pumps that right into
my veins. And then you park, andthen you're not the only boat
out there. So there's a numberof boats out there. And for the
Magic Kingdom, when you sort ofjust park out on the water where
you can see but you know, youcould see the train station and
everything, but above that, youcan see the castle, because of
(18:47):
the way they've built the park.
You can still see the castle.
They play the music right on theboat with you for the show. And
so you're you're on the water, you're having snacks, and you're
watching this amazing show.
We're gonna watch those MagicKingdom fireworks so many
different ways on this trip. Ican't even wait for it. I'm
excited about it, the Epcotversion. You hop on, like I
(19:07):
said, the Yacht Club, andthey'll actually take you
towards Hollywood Studios again, just to give you a little
evening cruise. And then backinto Crescent Lake, and you make
your way over to the waterunderneath the bridge at Epcot,
and you're basically right onthe water watching these
fireworks. And I gotta say, thenew show, the luminous show, is
(19:28):
actually lends itself to thatvantage point a lot better than
harmonious. Yeah. So really, really excited about that. Doing
both of those, those we'vealready decided on we're gonna
do both of those on this trip. Icannot wait. I'm so excited now
a couple of these others Ididn't know existed at all, and
I'm we're gonna have to givesome real thought too. Okay, La
(19:50):
Cava experience. I've heard ofthis one. It's 180 bucks a
person, so it ain't cheap. No,no. These that I've selected are
cheap. Frankly, I'm just a jerk.
Embark on a magical journey.
This is Disney's description.
Embark on a magical journey tothe region of Mexico where
tequila was born. Thisexperience, rich in culture and
(20:13):
tradition, is a showcase forsome of the world's finest
tequila a certified tequilaAmbassador guides you through a
selection of rare and uniqueAgave spirits. Each spirit is
paired with a flavor meant toenhance its essence. I saw like
chocolate or coffee bean orother things, right? Some
tequilas are exclusive to LaCava experience and are not
(20:34):
available anywhere else in theworld. Wow. Okay, so 180 bucks
La Cava experience. And it'sactually doesn't happen in the
La Cava venue. Oh, really, itactually happens at La Hacienda.
Oh,
Kelli (20:48):
de San Ha, okay, that's
interesting. Yeah. I mean, I'm
not gonna do that one because Ihaven't had tequila since
Chris (20:55):
May of 2021 we don't need
to go into that, but, but for
sure, yes, I get it.
Kelli (21:00):
But that does sound
lovely for people who enjoy
tequila.
Chris (21:05):
You gotta think about
this next one though. Okay,
learn how to taste wine withMaster sommelier George
miliotes, oh,
Kelli (21:14):
yes, no, I do love
George. I do love George.
Chris (21:18):
Learn to taste wine like
a professional with a blind
taste, quote, blind tasting ofsix different wines that master
sommelier one of only 281 in theworld, by the way. Gosh, I
didn't realize that. I didn'teither you can be a sommelier
thing, or you can be a MasterSommeliers, only 281 of those in
the world. Wow. Okay, George.
Amelia taste, who owns wine bar,George has hand selected these
six wines. Okay, explore thecharacter of each fine wine as
(21:41):
he uncovers its provenance, grape variety, vintage and more.
Snack on delicious horsd'oeuvres of cheese and
charcuterie, and hear Georgetalk about his journey through
the wine world and what it takesto be a master sommelier. It
does sound lovely 90 minutes.
You wanna know what the cost ofthat one is? Yeah, prices vary.
(22:02):
So that tells you somethingright there
Kelli (22:03):
depends on what George
picks, right? We tell, we can
tell George to pick, pick somebottles, maybe slightly better
than what you get at the high V.
Keep it low, George. But, Imean, I don't want to, you know,
I'm not looking for KendallJackson, but if you could, or
something in a box, right? Yeah,but, but I also don't need $100
bottle,
Chris (22:25):
exactly. How about this?
Okay, surfing programs atTyphoon Lagoon. Oh, that's
fascinating about this an openor we're not doing these, but an
open or private surfing show offyour surfing skills on dozens of
waves at Disney's Typhoon Lagoonwater park. Experienced riders
can shoot the curl in NorthAmerica's largest outdoor wave
pool before the before the parkopens or after it closes. This
(22:49):
is your time to spend some timeshredding it
Kelli (22:54):
up. That's cool. So they
turn on the wave pool for
surfing. Mm, hmm, yep.
Chris (22:58):
So each three hour
session comes packed with 100
ways broken into sets of 25
Kelli (23:06):
three hours, yeah, three
hours before the park opens,
Chris (23:10):
so 645 in the morning to
945 in the morning, oh, yeah, or
30 minutes after the parkcloses. That's the one for three
hours. That's the one. That'sthe one for sure. That's the
black time surfing anyway,
Kelli (23:22):
that's the one. Yes,
Chris (23:26):
during your private
surfing sessions, you can even
choose the direction of thewaves. Oh, wow. So the open
sessions are $245 to $310depending on when you go,
whether you go morning or orevening, and then the prices
change if you have evening onthe weekends versus driving
during
Kelli (23:44):
right? Okay, the week
Chris (23:46):
the private surfing 1300
to $1,600
Kelli (23:52):
really? Yep, feels like a
lot.
Chris (23:56):
You host your own private
event for you, and up to 25
friends. Again, three hours, 100ways broken into 25 wave
segments provide, and you canprovide your own playlist that
they will play over theloudspeaker at Thai family
Kelli (24:12):
game. It's a lot of
money. That's a lot of money for
waves.
Chris (24:16):
You can add 50 waves for
750 more
Kelli (24:20):
dollars. That's a lot of
money for waves.
Chris (24:25):
A lot of money to do some
waves.
Kelli (24:28):
It's a lot and it doesn't
come with food, just, I see
water,
Chris (24:34):
just get out there, squat
it up
Kelli (24:37):
in a fake ocean. That's a
lot of money. That's a lot.
Chris (24:43):
I also had Emirates
patisserie cake decorating
experience on here, 200 bucks, but that's for two people. Okay,
you can go in there and theygive you a dome cake. And
depending on which day you go,you can make the Mickey that
everybody's familiar with, orEmirates choice dome. Cake the
Mickey is a chocolate chiffoncake with with chocolate mousse.
(25:05):
And the amorex choice dome cakeis a lemon chiffon cake with
white chocolate mousse.
Kelli (25:09):
Chiffon. I think that's
the way to go. I mean, I
probably would have thoughtGenoese, but I think chiffon is
definitely the way not a conwould not have gone with a would
not have gone with the chicane.
So this is
Chris (25:23):
somewhere in here, how
long this is, but it's a fairly
linked experience. And for anextra, I think, $50 you can add
a second cake. So if you bringtwo of you, right, $200 get your
cake. I get my cake exactly, andyou can take them home. Or if
you're going to continue toexplore Disney Springs, they'll
hold it for you. That's nice andall that. I just want them to
show me how to make a mirrorglaze. Because, you know,
because, you know, they got touse a mirror
Kelli (25:44):
glaze for the I'm sure
they do a mirror glaze. Yeah. I
mean, you got to first make surethat the mousse is completely
set before you don't want themirror glaze to be gummy. No,
no. Not too much gelatin. Nottoo much. Be careful with the
gelatin. Okay.
Unknown (26:00):
Are you ready? I'm
ready.
Kelli (26:03):
So yesterday was
International Women's Day. Sure
was. And so I thought it wouldbe fun to look at some of the
women who have changed theDisney landscape. So basically,
without these women, Disneywould not be what it is today.
Unknown (26:17):
Okay, right? I like
this. So I thought Mary
Kelli (26:21):
Blair is on the list, but
she's not first. I mean, they're
not really in any particularorder, but the first one that I
thought of that's near and dearto my heart is PL travers, of
course. So without her, obviously, Mary Poppins is not
part of the Disney canon, andthat's my movie. So that's a
huge deal. I almost did PLTravers plus Julie Andrews,
(26:44):
because I also really love JulieAndrews, but I went with just
straight PL Travers. Okay, sonow the movie Saving Mr. Banks
tells a lot of this story, andit is a mostly accurate movie.
Okay, it's mostly accurate thatit does show how difficult it
was for Walt to get the rightsto marry. It did take Walt 20
(27:05):
years to persuade PL Travers toget the rights. Just she really
hated Disney. Really hatedDisney. I mean, in a very
strong, visceral way, she didn'tlike Disney. Wow. And she even
wrote like movie reviews, scathing movie reviews of Disney
(27:30):
movies that had come out. Solike when Walt decided this is
the movie I want to make, healready knew this is an uphill
battle. This lady does not likeDisney. I need to
Chris (27:40):
get started now, because
it's gonna take me 20 years,
Kelli (27:43):
and it took him 20 years.
So Walt and Travers argued alot, a lot, a lot about his
portrayal of Mary, specificallythe dancing penguin scene. She
was very much against that. Imean, Bob and Dick Sherman did
an amazing job, but Travers wasvery much against the dancing
penguins, the drawn animation, the Mr. Banks and Mary Poppins
(28:07):
stories were a lot darker in herbooks. So in any case, though,
without PL Travers saying yes,Disney canon would be completely
different without Mary Poppins, sure. Like and it that is my
heart movie, like it's myfavorite movie in the whole wide
world. And so she's, she's mynumber one. PL, traverse, watch
(28:29):
it tonight. Again, not in anyparticular order. Okay. Number
two is Mary Blair. Okay, so MaryBlair was noted for her
prominent role as an artist, animator and designer. Her work
is from Alice in Wonderland,Peter Pan, Song of the South and
Cinderella. So she has a verydistinctive style of drawing,
(28:51):
and she actually ended upresigning from Disney because
the animators struggled with her2d drawings because they were so
colorful. They really struggledwith her use of color and her 2d
type drawing she was criticizedfor being overly abstract and
(29:11):
too colorful. So she said, forget that. I'll take my
talents elsewhere. And she tookthem to the advertising
industry, where she wrote anddid commercials and ads for some
of the largest brands you'veever heard of. Kidding. She only
returned to Disney when Waltpersonally requested her for
(29:31):
it's a small world, right? Soshe came back specifically for
it's a small world, and it issignature Mary Blair. Signature
Mary Blair. I've got some thatare older, like Mary Blair, and
then some that are more recent.
(29:52):
This next one is more recent.
Jennifer Lee. Jennifer Lee wasthe first female director of a
Disney Animation Studio. Featurefilm. Do you want to guess which
one?
Unknown (30:02):
Oh, frozen. Okay, I
didn't guess at all. No,
Kelli (30:06):
you didn't. I could tell
you were taking too long. So she
was the first female director, but she also wrote part of
frozen. Oh
Chris (30:13):
yes, we saw a lot about
her in those in the
documentaries about Yes. And
Kelli (30:17):
so she also wrote frozen,
too. She became the first female
director of a feature film thatearned more than $1 billion in
gross box office revenue. Okay,so she was the first female
director of a Disney AnimationStudios feature film, but then
first female director of anyfeature film that earned more
than 1 billion gross box officerevenue. She eventually became
(30:39):
the first woman, Chief CreativeOfficer at Disney, until last
year, 2024 when she stepped downto do any guesses,
Chris (30:50):
well, the rest of the
frozen movies? Yes, she wanted
Kelli (30:53):
to return back to full
time filmmaking cool, so she
stepped down to write and directfrozen three and four.
Chris (31:00):
I think they're gonna do
four and five. Well, this was
just three
Kelli (31:04):
and four. Okay, before
Disney. Fun fact, she worked as
a graphic artist in publishing, designing audiobooks for Random
House. Isn't that fun? That'sfun. Okay, next one, Leota
tombs. Oh
Chris (31:18):
yes, you know Leota?
Well, she's, she's a model for,
Kelli (31:22):
she's the face of madam
so Leota Toomes is most widely
known as the face of Madame.
Leota, again, which is why shemade my list, obviously, from
Disney's haunted mansion. Shealso worked as an imagineer on
several Disneyland attractions.
Fun Facts. Here and it goes herdaughter Catherine Irvine has
(31:43):
gone on to become the artdirector at Disneyland. Her most
recent success was leading theteam in the creation of Star
Wars Galaxy's edge. So Leotadaughter designed Star Wars
Galaxies edge at Disneyland.
Yes, Leota daughter, Catherinehad a daughter who she named,
who is Leota, his granddaughter.
(32:03):
This person is Ali IrvineWheeler. She is also an
imagineer at Disney, and hasrecently given birth to her own
daughter, who she named Leo. Ilove these women. This whole
little Leota
Unknown (32:19):
family died in the
wool. Love it. I love it so
Kelli (32:23):
much. This is a whole
little Disney Family, and I love
it. Love it. Love it, love it.
Okay, so we've got so far then.
Pl travers, Mary Blair, JenniferLee and Leota Toombs. The next
one is probably, I'm gonna say,the biggest. You'll find her on
a lot of lists. Me, Mary Blairwas on a lot of lists, but
you'll find this on a lot oflists too. Harriet burns. He's
(32:43):
familiar with Harriet
Chris (32:45):
the name, yes, but I
can't remember
Kelli (32:47):
what she was. The first
woman hired as an Imagineer.
Okay, she constructed sets andprops for Mickey Mouse Club, and
she also created the model forSleeping Beauty Castle at
Disneyland. So essentially, that's the way Imagineers would
work for things like the castlesor the rides, is they create a
tiny model of it. That's theirdesign, and then it gets turned
(33:10):
into the real thing. Shedesigned models for the
Matterhorn, bobsleds fired. Youwould love her for that. And of
course, that is, she designed asa replica of the famous
Matterhorn in Switzerland, right? So her, her model was a
replica of the Matterhorn, andher model became the model for
(33:32):
the Matterhorn.
Chris (33:33):
Yeah, I don't know the
Matterhorn is beautiful. Yes,
I'm not gonna give her. Shedidn't assemble the bobsled.
Bobsled was probably some man.
Of course
Kelli (33:43):
it was. She did build an
exact model of the Pirates of
the Caribbean ride. So she builtthe model for the pirate ride,
which opened in 1967 and shealso served as a figure finisher
on pirates mannequins. I'm gonnatell you more about what a
finisher does in just a second.
Okay? She also designed theHaunted Mansion. So she made the
model for the Haunted Mansion, which opened in 1969 right? I
(34:05):
mean, this lady had some stuff, right? Okay, so a finisher, what
a finisher does is they go in,literally with tiny paint
brushes and clothing, and takethe models from basic painting
to perfected mannequin. Okay, soshe was a finisher. As a
(34:26):
finisher, she applied individualfeathers to all of the
animatronic birds in WaltDisney's Enchanted Tiki Room,
which opened in 1963 and shesays that was her most
challenging job, because whenthe birds would breathe out,
they looked great, but when theybreathed in, their feathers
(34:48):
crumpled and looked like theyhad mites. She said that was the
most challenging finishing jobshe had.
Chris (34:56):
I don't want my birds to
look they've got mites. I love
Kelli (34:58):
her for it. She was. Also
the first woman to receive a
main street window with acommemorative plaque to honor
her work, and in 2000 she wasdonned a Disney legend by The
Walt Disney Company as anemployee quote whose
imagination, talents and dreamshave created the Disney magic
(35:19):
that is awesome. So I'm a bigfan of Harriet burns, for sure.
There were a lot of other womenthat could have made this list
that I didn't put on becausethey weren't like the first
woman to do this, or first womanto do that. Lillian Disney, for
example, is responsible fornaming the Mouse Mickey instead
of Mortimer instead of Mortimer, right? Right? So there's a lot
(35:42):
of other women that did thingslike that, but I was like, I
want to pick ones a that sayDisney to me, right? So that's
gonna be Leota and PL trust, still, but still groundbreaking,
but still groundbreaking women, right? But then also ones who
did maybe more than one thing, right? The first woman to do
this, and the first woman to dothis, and she was cool because
(36:04):
she did this, yeah,
Chris (36:05):
right, yeah. Well, I
think you nailed it. I think
your list is, is perfection. So
Kelli (36:09):
I thought that was fun.
So we've got Harriet burns Leotatombs and all of
Chris (36:14):
her progeny. Yes,
Kelli (36:15):
Lee, the whole Leota
dynasty, Jennifer, Lee, Mary,
Blair and PL Travers. It's agreat women who have completely
changed the Disney landscape.
Chris (36:28):
All Praise be to all you
wonderful women out there. And
what was International Women'sDay. International
Kelli (36:35):
Women's Day, literally
just the world would not exist
without women. We have givenbirth to everybody,
Unknown (36:43):
so you're
Chris (36:44):
all welcome. You deserve
all your flowers. I've
Kelli (36:46):
given birth to zero
people, but you're all welcome.
Chris (36:49):
Yes, you you deserve all
your flowers. Hope you all get
up, get all the praise youdeserve. Thank you all so much
for your contributions, including the wonderful women of
Disney that you
Kelli (37:02):
Yeah. And so my ears were
adjacent, because it was many
Yes. But also I thought theywere Mary Poppins ears,
Unknown (37:13):
right? They were
adjacent two ways,
Kelli (37:14):
adjacent in multiple
directions. Yes, you know,
there's,
Chris (37:18):
I saw the video that
there is actually a a small,
hard to find plaque like inBoston, in the ground at
Hollywood Studios celebratingMortimer. Oh, but Lillian.
