Chris (00:01):
Stupid kinda stupid, or
whatever the infernal thing is.
This is the Supercalifragilisticawesome Disney Podcast where
each week we discuss, youguessed it, Disney things you
Kelli (00:13):
know, things you don't
know and things you didn't know
you needed to know. Well,
Chris (00:17):
as Walt would say, the
way to get started is to quit
talking and begin doing oh
Kelli (00:21):
wait, wait, I can do
this. Please stand clear of the
doors poor football mantengac'est la Hado de las puertas
Chris (00:28):
welcome aboard Disney fam
Hello out there Disney fam. My
name is Chris. I'm Kelly.
Welcome to this week's podcast.
We're so excited to be hererecording a little later than
normal. So we're gonna try tokeep the energy level up anyway
level up you're wearing yourspace mountaineers that I bought
you on a on a single solo triptoo.
Kelli (00:49):
I know you did. So good.
Those these years are some of myfavorites and they're actually
very comfortable. I am there noteven remotely topic adjacent not
even close to it not even fromthe same park as to what I'm
talking about. But I would liketo get into that spaceship and
go into space right now. In adifferent world. And so I was
looking at my ear selection andI was like, which is which is
(01:12):
fairly fast calling to metonight. And it was like oh my
gosh, another planet would benice. Want to be on another
planet a planet? Maybe were likecollege students and plagiarism
don't exist.
Chris (01:26):
Oh, it would be if you
got about a week. You got about
a week and that'll be thisplanet for at least for a couple
of weeks. Hey, so we havedownloads this week. From
Maitland Florida. MaitlandMaitland, Florida. Yes, this is
20,000 lucky folks who live justoutside of Orlando. Not lucky
because they live in Florida, aswe'll see later, but lucky due
(01:50):
to proximity to Disney World andother amazing theme parks.
Kelli (01:52):
So good for mate lenders.
Unknown (01:54):
Yep. Maybe that's what
they call them.
Kelli (01:56):
I think they should.
Okay,
Chris (01:58):
Klamath Falls Oregon.
Kelli (02:00):
Did you just pick all
hard names to say
Chris (02:02):
this week May I will
things like I did. Klamath Falls
Oregon. Yes. Gorgeous, gorgeous, stereotypical Oregon. Looking at
community community on theKlamath River South. Southwest
Oregon, near the Californiaborder. Okay. McCool junction,
Nebraska. Now this is reallyclose to us. Store 500 Fine,
(02:27):
Nebraska. Nice folks. Just westof us, right over in New York
County. And, again, totallyunintentionally, celebrating
Asian and Pacific Islander.
Right. Okay. Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia. Now that sounds
lovely. Yes, Kuala Lumpur thecapital of Malaysia. Like this
(02:49):
is one of those like ultramodern Skylines that we often
see over there. Dominated ofcourse by the 451 meter tall
Petronas Twin Towers. You'veseen these? Yeah, in movies and
whatnot. Wow. Yeah. Sounds andthey're but they're listening to
us. I should have somebody wassomebody in that huge tower? I
(03:13):
know some it's probably justsome one person. Lots of people
Kelli (03:18):
a lot of like, it's a
listening party of really cool
people in Malaysia.
Chris (03:22):
Yes, we're huge in Kuala
Lumpur.
Kelli (03:27):
Give it to us.
Chris (03:29):
All right. Look, I hate
talking about all the political
stuff too. But that's it's, it'sout there. It's real the Disney
life right now it is. So lastweek, we talked about the
Florida Legislature passing abill for the state to take over
monorail inspections this week.
This past week. DeSantis signedthat bill into law. So now the
monorails are under stateinspection guidance. Not Disney.
(03:53):
At least until a court rulesalways otherwise
Kelli (04:00):
loss. Yes. Yes. Because
they're gonna hear our segment
about how well Disney has beendoing with the monorail fair.
Good. And did you hear
Chris (04:08):
that? Do you guys even
have people that know how to
inspect monorails at the state
Kelli (04:14):
what colors to use on
Christmas?
Chris (04:20):
So this week, Disney also
held its shareholder meeting and
and, you know, up and downnumbers. They've had some drop
in their stock price on the onthe concerns around the
streaming services, that sort ofthing. But the parks brought in
like over $7 billion in revenue.
But people were wanting to knowwhat Iger was going to say about
(04:43):
the Florida political landscape.
For the first time, Disneyissued a formal warning to
Disney investors that includedFlorida among other
international politicalsituation As debt could
negatively impact Disney, so forexample, Russian aggression in
(05:04):
Ukraine, Hong Kong sketchyrelationship with China
instability and France and now ahostile Florida government Wow.
Yes. Yes. Specifically or theystated in their in their warning
in Florida steps directed at thecompany, including the passage
of legislation have taken, havebeen taken and future actions
(05:27):
had been threatened, whichcollectively could negatively
impact and may have alreadyimpacted our ability to execute
on our business strategy, ourcosts and the profitability of
our operations in Florida.
Kelli (05:38):
Oh, my gosh, what so if
they win the court case that
right so they're listing thatright, and if they win the court
case against DeSantis, then theycould sue for damages?
Chris (05:47):
Oh, maybe. That's fair.
That's a fair point there.
Kelli (05:51):
I could sue for damages
and say it impacted our
shareholders and shareholderscould sue for damages,
Chris (05:57):
like a class attached to
him personally. Ultimately, Iger
issued a not so veiled threat,Florida, is attacking Disney
over a difference of opinionrelated to a marginalized
community in violation ofDisney's first amendment rights.
And it boils down to I'mparaphrasing Iger here, whether
(06:19):
the governor wants Disney tomove forward with its plan to
invest $17 billion over the next10 years into its Florida
operations, including the 1000sof jobs that come with that
investment. Right. I mean, comeon,
Kelli (06:33):
you're making dumb
decisions. DeSantis like you're
literally hurting the economy ofthe state by going after the
biggest employer. This isridiculous.
Chris (06:40):
And what's interesting is
that Florida legislative session
finally ended. Okay. Right. Andit ended without the Florida
Legislature legislatorlegislation. Sure. Passing any
laws about ride or attractioninspections, other than the
monorails. And so that I thinkthat proves that what they
(07:03):
didn't do, it proves the pointthat do you think that Disney is
not doing a good job andinspecting it drives or not? Or
is this something else just ifyou really if you really
believed that they needed stateoversight, then you'd pass all
these things to get that done.
Iger also made the point Ididn't realize this that there
are like 2000 special districtsin Florida that have special tax
(07:25):
laws related to them. Like theDaytona Motor Speedway has a
specific oh my god tax districtwe're gonna break those down.
Right. And they didn't that'shis point. They didn't the the
laws that they passed, in factone of almost 2000 districts,
the villages that hugeretirement community in Florida,
special tax district. So anycase,
Kelli (07:48):
yeah. Nicholas it's
targeted and everybody sees it.
Chris (07:52):
at a federal level us
rep. Tony Neal's of Texas, of
course, along with Lauren Bogutof Colorado and Marjorie Taylor
Greene of Georgia proud membersof the chock a block full of
nuts caucus has filed a federalbill calling for the end to Walt
Disney World and Disney lands,no fly zone laws. It's not much
(08:14):
of a no fly zone. But there's abubble over Magic Kingdom and
part of Epcot that you can't flybelow 3000 feet. These clowns
are calling for an end to thatbecause you know go well go
broke according to them.
Kelli (08:30):
I mean, that's got that
you've got massive massive
amounts of people in thoseparks. Would you like to
potentially open that up to Idon't know. I
Chris (08:38):
don't I mean,
Kelli (08:39):
I mean it's that's violin
Chris (08:41):
it's it's not you know, I
don't know if there's a lot of
is 3000 feet we've seen like Skywriters at Hollywood Studios
before you know, which is notincluded in that bubble by the
way Animal Kingdom and Hollywoodsee as is not included in that.
It's this is just pure politicalattack. It's it's also stupid.
(09:04):
He also effective on May the10th. He named Glenn Gilson Jr,
the district administrator forthis new what replaced the Reedy
Creek district. Gilson is thechair of the state of Florida's
commission on ethics and hasbeen appointed to the position
twice by Governor DeSantis.
These folks are supposed toinvestigate the complaints of
(09:26):
misuse of public trust bygovernment officials. For
example, if Ron DeSantis wasbreaking the law by having a a
shadow gubernatorial campaign, and using state plains and state
funds to do that, that would beunethical. No worries though,
because this guy has alreadycleared him of any wrongdoing
(09:47):
there.
Kelli (09:50):
Oh, wow.
Chris (09:51):
He's gonna make $400,000
a year as the administrator for
projects
Kelli (09:57):
is that 100% in bribes or
is did they actually take out
taxes? It feels
Chris (10:02):
like I'm gonna pay you
$400,000 Just to do what I say.
Kelli (10:06):
Yes, it was like a bribe
salary.
Chris (10:12):
So it happier news. Okay,
Disney is going to relaunch the
Disney dining plan next year, which is very, very exciting.
We've got we've got first one ithas
Kelli (10:23):
the festival menus still
have still have all eligibility
Chris (10:27):
which told us it was
always coming back. We've got
close friends that literallywon't go unless they can get the
dining plan because they don'tknow how babies are made or
something. Starting they've gotbig families. That's what that
means. Starting May 31. Thisyear, you can add dining plans
to vacation packages as ofJanuary nights next year. So if
(10:48):
you're going to be going afterJanuary 9, wait till May 31. To
book your plans, and you caninclude a dining plan.
Kelli (10:54):
So no news then on
pricing or what it includes or
what. There's
Chris (10:58):
only two plans. One is a
counter service only plan and
the other is a more fulsomedining counter service and the
dining plan a lot like one timeyou and I almost died on it.
First year, the first year theyhad it. They gave us everything.
They had way too many snacks.
Yes. But yeah, so they had theyused to have four plans now
they'll have to in the new one.
(11:18):
Also lots of changes coming in2024 for the reservation system.
Annual Pass holders will nothave to use reservation systems
except for select days all thatand if you buy a specific day
tickets, you won't have to get areservation for that. That seems
like a system issue a whole timeanyway. If you bought it for a
specific day, why would you geta reservation, right? So it
(11:39):
seems like they got that bugfixed. Also, this is a big deal.
Starting next year, Jeannie pluswill allow you to select
lightning Lane purchases beforeyou go. Instead of waking at
like 7am to try to get on alightning lane. You can buy
lightning Lane access like
Kelli (11:57):
90 days in advance.
Chris (11:58):
You got a vacation plan.
That's nice. Yeah. Yeah. So allthat's very, very good.
Kelli (12:03):
You'll still be waking up
at 7am. Like what if it's 90
days out? You
Chris (12:07):
Oh, they'll have other
guys out? Maybe? Yeah, probably.
And also they'll still havevirtual cues for new attractions
that you'll have to get up at7am to do. at Magic Kingdom. The
planet looks like they're aboutto start installing Tiana's,
Tiana's foods water tower, whichwill be like the sort of the
weenie for that attraction forthe bayou adventure and also you
(12:31):
can now get a Disney 100Cinderella pumpkin coach that
Warren Buffett amazing I do lovethem I
Kelli (12:40):
saw them and I was like
that is a cool popcorn buckets
very much fantastic. Yes 100%For that oh
Chris (12:48):
goodness to eat to the
beat concert series lineup has
been announced. Tiffany thinkI'm alone.
Kelli (12:56):
Does it seem to be it
wanna read? Gosh, that just took
me straight.
Chris (13:02):
I mean, there are so many
bigger bands that are gonna be
there but I called out Tiffanybut you know I was in love with
her 10 year old me was in lovewith her Edna Mode experience
probably a GA s jacket probablyat legions the mode experience
reopens Hollywood studios andyou can meet Mr. or Mrs.
(13:25):
Incredible there. Okay. TheDisney Vacation Club tower at
Polynesian is just shooting upit has topped out at 10 floors
wait to stay there wait there wegot a first look at the frozen
thing rollercoaster at the HongKong Disneyland there'd been a
whole Disney Frozen themed arealike the Imagineers got to ride
(13:47):
it even though wow so it's closeit well the the aesthetics are
not all that close but theriders ride is pretty close.
That's awesome. Yep. Eithermaybe next year Disney plus and
who heard your
Kelli (14:00):
music stuff here? Yeah,
we all did to Disney
Chris (14:04):
Plus is a big deal. Okay.
Disney did not come right outand say that they were going to
purchase Comcast who they whohave own a share of Hulu. Right.
Right. But they are definitelylooking. I think that the future
is that Hulu and Disney plus areall one app. Yeah. I
Kelli (14:21):
mean essentially they're
essentially they're now like
with Verizon, you have a Verizonaccount you get ESPN Who
Chris (14:28):
is this class? I think
it's gonna sort of buried there.
They're all going to be they'regonna start offering a lot of
the stuff you see on Hulu, Ithink on Disney plus, so it's
gonna feel like one stopshopping.
Kelli (14:38):
Yeah. Okay, that's cool.
Chris (14:39):
You ready for
Tomorrowland? You seem like
you're ready for Tomorrowland.
Kelli (14:43):
I'm very ready. I mean,
you will over okay, well, let's
go. In case you haven't heardthere is a new sushi restaurant
coming to Japan.
Chris (14:53):
Might have strategically
left that out of my news.
Kelli (14:56):
It was announced like
five days ago and this is really
cool. So you You've done asection on to me time Yes. And
we'd love to have Benito Yes. Sothis this restaurant is going to
be on the second floor of theJapan pavilion taking the place
of what was called Tokyo dining.
Yes. Which has been closed forrefurb since November of 22. And
now we know why. So now we knowwhy right so this restaurant is
(15:18):
called Shiki sai sushi is a kya
Chris (15:24):
say that you had to say
that it is
Kelli (15:27):
a table service
restaurant that they say is
opening in the summer of 2023but there's no official days but
that's not long that's you knowwithin the next few months they
call it a festive diningexperience. Okay now is a chi a
style right so is a chi a diningin Japanese means that it's
shareable. Okay. Also is a kyais like an informal Japanese
(15:53):
pub. So it translates to be likeSookie stay like our Saki stay
like getting Saki to stay. Sosort of you're, you're in you're
just chilling. You know? It'sit's not formal. Okay,
Chris (16:08):
it's sit down. It's but
it's, it's easy. It's easy,
breezy. Yes.
Kelli (16:14):
So we had a restaurant in
Charlotte called musanze, where
when you went in, there was likea sushi bar there. And people
would come in and just sort ofchill at the bar. It's that type
of an experience. Sushi Barwhere somebody's making it right
in front of you. But you canalso eat at tables, you know,
nearby. So this is they serveessentially alcoholic drinks and
snacks. But this is going to bemore than that. It's a casual
(16:37):
place. They say they call it forlike after work drinking. Like a
Spanish tapas bar, or a pub oran American tavern, something
along those lines, but theJapanese version, the Japanese
version, okay, because thatsounds fun. Yes. So it is a
compound word is a kya meaningto stay and Saki shop. And so it
(16:59):
originated from the idea thatSaki shops would allow customers
to sit on the premises and drinkinstead of getting it to go,
okay. And they also typicallyhave the traditional paper
lanterns outside. Okay, so yousee a lot of those pictures, but
that's a traditional izakayasstyle. Okay. Yep. So normally
(17:21):
like in Japan, and is a kyarestaurant would be like all you
can eat or all you can drink fora set price per person. There's
no word on whether that's howthis setup like that. I cannot
confirm that. But that'stypically how it is in Japan.
But what that means is you wouldgo in and pay like $50 I'm
(17:42):
making this up. And it's all youcan eat in like two hours. So
there's, there's a time limit,or all you can drink in a
certain number of hours. Again,no confirmation that that's what
this is. But that's how it mightbe. It's a kya style in Japan.
Yes. Food is typically orderedat a slow pace in several
courses. Right. So again, you'renot in a rush. You're chilling.
(18:06):
You're drinking I'm reallyliking you're just kind of
enjoying it. Yeah, yeah. Hopethis is what it is. Yes. So they
say this is how they describeit. Experience the essence of
Japan's seasonal festivals, where each month brings a new
celebration to your table. Sothis is going to be an ever
changing menu from hangingTanzaku to celebrate Tabata in
(18:30):
July with savoring Moon viewingdumplings in September, a
cultural representative fromJapan will guide you through
each unique festival experienceone bite at a time. Oh, so this
very excited about updatingmenu, that's going to be a cool
thing.
Chris (18:50):
Also, I like this idea of
a cultural representative guide
yes through. So it'seducational, as much as anything
yes
Kelli (18:58):
and ever changing and
something like that. So there's
also an open Sushi Bar andGrill. So I'm going to give you
some of the menu highlights.
Again, there's no set menu, because this is an ever changing
situation. Okay, but I'm goingto give you some of the
highlights. So at the sushi bar,we've got three particular
highlights. One of them isCobourg a sushi, which
(19:19):
translates to mean overflowingsushi. And this item is
overflowing with flavors. Okay?
It features Negi Toro and NACAOh chi tuna elegantly paired
with salmon roe and green onion.
Can we just stop for a minuteand talk about how great my
(19:39):
Japanese is? And
Chris (19:41):
thrilled that this is
what we're doing tonight.
Kelli (19:45):
I'm killing this. You
Chris (19:47):
have done a great job
thus far.
Kelli (19:48):
I'm killing it. Yes. So
that's overflowing sushi, right.
So the idea is overflowing withflavors, a lot of different
options there. Then you have theTokyo Negi roll. This combined
green on median tempura rolledwith tuna tataki and topped with
jalapeno aoli shredded carrotand sliced jalapeno. Right. So
(20:09):
this is some cool, interesting
Chris (20:11):
different stuff that's
almost fusion. Yeah.
Kelli (20:14):
And they say that it's
really cool because again,
you're sitting at the bar andwatching them make it and that
is sort of a cool thing in youknow, sushi restaurant, so I'm
sure they're gonna have like afamous, you know, sushi bar
person, because that's one ofthe yells at you and that's what
brings it right. It's somebodyyou want to watch make sushi
because they're so amazing. Thelast one is is cool. It's called
(20:35):
the Fujimori, which translatesto a boatload of different
sushi. And it is literallyserved on a boat, of
Chris (20:42):
course, of course,
because you see those boats that
go around the little river.
Yeah, love it.
Kelli (20:50):
So it features sashimi
and sushi arranged on a boat
shaped platter, this iterationof finna Mori is even served
with the festive pomp at theboat procession of the famous 10
Jean Matsuri. So it's like awhole experience and it did like
there's a lot of stuff going onon this boat like there's a lot
(21:10):
happening. So those are again, just some sushi bar menu
highlights those could change Ilove I love it too. Okay, so
then you've got the Izakayamenu. So the is a chi a menu is
going to be shareables but alsosort of in the bar chilled laid
back or type of a vein. Okay.
So, the first the firsthighlight there we have is a
(21:31):
Karachi J chicken. This isessentially fried chicken
marinated in soy sauce, Sakiginger and Marin to give it a
touch of sweetness. Yeah, itlooks amazing of looks
absolutely amazing. But so youcan get the idea, right? It's
like a pub, right? Fried chickenlike marinated in some really
cool stuff. Then you've gotsalmon. miza yaki, Miss missa.
(21:54):
Yaki translates to miso grilled, okay, so the miso adds like a
flavor of a deep umami. I can'tsay that without thinking of
that episode and friends thatwill sue Nagi Bobby,
Chris (22:14):
you see Ross saying, Oh
Nike.
Kelli (22:18):
The miso adds like a it
says a deep umami paired with
sugar mirin and Saki. So again, like you've got Saki infused
into some of the dishes honey, Ireally hope you don't toss them
into the shroud will
Chris (22:32):
not throw the grilled
salmon into the shrub. Okay.
Kelli (22:36):
Okay, so anyway, it looks
the salmon miso yaki looks
amazing. They also have in theIzakaya menu, just a tomato
salad with avocado. There'sclearly some soy sauce and stuff
in there. But again, these areshareable platters so you think
we get a big salad? You get acouple of some fried chicken
wings. I mean, that'sessentially what it looks like
(22:58):
some of this some of thatblooded a blonde with
Chris (23:01):
a little Japanese
culture. Yeah, sprinkled on top.
Yes. And you're just chillin andrelaxing. I love the sound of
Kelli (23:07):
this. Smoking bball
outside
Chris (23:13):
into the Fresh Prince.
Kelli (23:16):
Okay, there's one grilled
item menu, highlight. And then
the other things are just thingsI saw in the in the pictures
posted because again, they'rebeing a bit they're really vague
booking this because the menu issupposed to change. So one
grilled menu item isOkonomiyaki. This is a Japanese
savory pancake, and it is madewith flour, eggs, water and then
(23:40):
filled with shredded cabbage andbacon, topped with tangy
okonomiyaki sauce, mayonnaise, anori bonito flakes and pickled
ginger. Wow. So this issomething that we don't see a
lot here in the States. But alot of Asian cuisine includes
the savory pancakes. Yeah, myfriend that's from Korea, makes
(24:03):
a kimchi pancake. That isamazing. So I think this type of
thing is going to be phenomenal.
I think it's going to be sogreat. Other things that I saw
in the photos, which, you know, again, we're vague booking these
be with our eyes. Definitelyplenty of Tim pure options,
which I think Tim pura is justlike better heaven. Yes,
(24:25):
definitely some oysters. I sawplenty of steak. Also calamari
ahi tuna saw a lot of that and Isaw something that looks like
some type of a sesame grilledeggplant. So I think they're
gonna have some cool veggieplant based options.
Chris (24:49):
So this is upstairs above
the like, sort of where Tepito
is but to the right, yes.
Kelli (24:54):
And so you have views of
the big arch and of the lagoon.
Unknown (24:57):
Oh, nice. Yes. Um, is
Japan the is Japan the best food
destination in me that showcase?
I
Kelli (25:08):
feel like it's a bit
sacrilegious that you even
suggest that given that Franceexists, but
Chris (25:14):
that's the thing is that
is it?
Kelli (25:16):
I don't know, I think
that's worthy of a debate. I do
think they have probably thebest trio of restaurants. It's
right or wrong, right, really, the best trio of sit down or
counter service. We've
Chris (25:31):
eaten more than one
French restaurant in the France
pavilion. We've only really hadsome stuff from the little
outdoor counter service place.
Yes,
Kelli (25:41):
I have. That's something
I mean, France kills it at the
festivals. They've got that artdesign day glasses place which
is really good. They've got thecheese and the bread on the
inside, which is great pastries.
Chris (25:53):
patisserie in the St.
Paul's, they've got to France.
Kelli (25:57):
So I think they've got
good food in France. But I think
Japan may have the best trio ofrestaurants. I don't think it
has a whole Paris has a strongtrio. I think they have a lot of
good individual foods. So it'sgot a very strong trio there.
Yeah,
Chris (26:12):
they do. It's like it's
good. I cannot wait to go back
and also kind of want to go toJapan.
Unknown (26:18):
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah,
for sure.
Chris (26:21):
All right. Here we go.
Taking a turn. So a couple ofweeks ago, Disney celebrated
dapper days, the Dapper Dayspring outing. I love that they
call it that right if you don'tknow dapper days are Google that
they had an Epcot on April the30th. And Magic Kingdom will may
1. Dapper days deserves its ownsegment. Yeah, honestly. 100%
(26:41):
But that reminded me of thedapper Dan's the talented and
funny barbershop quartet thathave provided so many magical
moments on Main Street USA.
Luckily, on April the 11th thisyear, in honor of National
barbershop quartet day, theDisney Parks blog provided a
(27:04):
history of the dapper Dan's Oh,written by the dapper Dan's
themselves. So that's where mythe information most of the
information from I love
Kelli (27:13):
the Dapper Dan.
Chris (27:14):
They're great. They're
great. So what are the dapper
Dan's? If you don't know, theyare a barbershop quartet which
generally had been in existencebarbershop quartets that is, had
been in existence since the late1800s. Now I went down a real
rabbit hole here today because Ilearned something
Unknown (27:33):
you love this is this
is these types of rabbit holes.
Well, this
Chris (27:36):
is absolutely not going
to surprise you. Okay, Lynn
Abbott, a jazz activist atTulane University was an expert
on early African Americanpopular music and gospel
quartets. He discoveredoverwhelming evidence that
barbershop quartet thing waspervasive in African American
culture in the late 1800s andearly 1900s, including among
(27:57):
many men, who went on to becomepioneers of jazz. Of
Kelli (28:01):
course, of course, I love
that they use it as a verb
quartet thing I know.
Chris (28:07):
Starting in the late
1880s, and 1890s, the black
community harmonizedrecreationally, the popular
songs of the day as well asspirituals and folk songs,
improvising harmonies, accordingto long standing African
American musical practice, fromthese sessions arose certain
idiosyncratic musical qualitiesthat are the hallmarks of what
now we now consider thebarbershop style. That's
(28:27):
fantastic. Of course, it wasappropriated by white folks,
they even had white folks doingbarbershop quartet and blackface
minstrel shows in the in theearly 90s. Oh my gosh,
Kelli (28:39):
well on the dapper dance
was a fairly white group for
quite some time they havediversified they had very well
versed diversified but ofcourse, they were primarily
white for a while
Chris (28:48):
whether whether these
included bad puns, like the
dapper Dan's use today is amystery. But on April the
11th 1938 26 men from around thecountry met in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
That's the moment recognized asthe birth of the true barbershop
quartet, Tulsa,
Kelli (29:05):
Oklahoma, Tulsa,
Oklahoma, yes, saw that come in.
They formed
Chris (29:09):
the barbershop harmony
society, which is where I got
the information about thehistory with the African
American culture. The US thoughApril 11, is recognized as their
day. Now, the first barbershopharmony group, Disney Disney,
performed in Disney Land in1957. And it was made of three
(29:30):
guys in a girl. Oh, interestinglike that. But the dance
officially started entertainingfolks on Main Street at
Disneyland in 1959. When MagicKingdom opened up in 1971, it
was just natural that the dancewould pack up and head east for
opening day. So they'd been atthey'd been on Main Street USA
at the Magic Kingdom ever sinceknotch. Since day one. The group
(29:53):
was created by Park talentsupervisor, Chuck Corson, who
previously worked in Casting atWalt Disney Studios. His first
batch of Dapper Dan performerswho eventually became the the
dapper Dan's were pulled from afairly popular singing group at
the time called Fred Waring andthe Pennsylvanians. There's
(30:15):
never been a more 1950s namegroup than that. So he snapped
for folks out of that group andthey became the dapper Dan's.
Not long after that, in 1964,college kids came to Disneyland,
just to see the barbershopquartet there. They were, they
were such huge barbershopquartet lovers, that they they
(30:37):
went to Disneyland just to seethe Quartet. And they started
singing themselves right thereon Main Street. And Chuck Corson
solved them and was blown away
Kelli (30:51):
like they were singing to
the dance. Yes, answer singing,
right.
Chris (30:54):
So there's their singing
too. And of course it happened
to stumble across them and wasblown away said they were
sensational hire them on thespot and they became they became
the dapper Dan's and adopted thestyle and the in the brand of
nostalgia and small town charmthat these who always for
(31:15):
likable guys are right, that'sthat's the group that sort of
created what we know today.
Today, the Dan's bringing intalent from all over the world,
including multiple groups atboth us parks, and they've
started quartets in Paris andHong Kong parks.
Kelli (31:33):
So what you're saying is
like, it's not the same dance, I
think a lot of
Chris (31:38):
different had gotten
multiple dang groups, even like,
say at Walt Disney World. Yep. Icould be wrong about that. They
usually stay like for sure. Theyusually stay within a couple
blocks on Main Street or townsquare. And they they
historically done theirtraditional candy colored
pinstripes for decades, they'vebeen performing for like 60
(32:00):
years. At this point, the DapperDay ends as a group. But over
the years, they have worked afew seasonal looks and
performance in obviously, duringthe holidays, you'll catch them
and singing holiday tuneswearing green and red stripes. I
think the most clever version isthat when they transform into
their undead alter egos, thecadaver dance. Yeah, I've got I
(32:23):
mean really great. Dead facemakeup.
Kelli (32:29):
They have women now,
right?
Chris (32:31):
I don't know. I don't
know that I've ever seen a woman
Dan.
Kelli (32:36):
I thought I thought the
last time we were there. And we
were watching them from like theupper balcony. So
Chris (32:42):
we saw the citizens of
Main Street. Sure, like the
mayor and the fire chief andthey see and they
Kelli (32:50):
dance okay, but maybe the
woman there was a citizen? I
think so. Yeah. Okay,interesting.
Chris (32:58):
Despite how things have
changed over the years, which
really isn't all that much thedance have held on to
traditional barbershopharmonies. While they usually
perform acapella sometimes hedidn't get some playing a very
particular and interestinginstrument. The hope I'm saying
this right there Deegan, Oregonchimes, these are these are like
(33:18):
they look like organ pipes. Butthey work sort of like bells.
Right? So you'll see themholding these things. See,
you've definitely seen them.
Yes. And so sometimes they willsing and play those bells at the
same time. Nobody has reallymade these bells since the late
1920s. But the dance startedworking them into their act in
(33:39):
the 1970s. As for Chuck Corson, after the opening of Walt Disney
World, he was honored with awindow on Main Street USA in the
Magic Kingdom. It's above theemporium and we've talked about
how hard it is to get one ofthose. It's hard to get one of
those windows and I think he'sbeen there since the start.
Yeah, he was the if you look onthe windows, look for the new
(34:01):
era band and choir director heserves. He is cast as the he's
the casting director. So he's onone window that that that fake
company takes up to Windows, there's he and another person,
and he's the casting directorfor that fake company on the
window. There's a fun storyfloating around the internet of
Chuck and Walt getting stuck ina snowdrift in Chuck's car when
(34:24):
they were working together ondeveloping the entertainment
that would be used around thesquall Valley Winter Olympics in
1960. They got snowed in theirhotel, Walt was like no, I want
to get to the to theentertainment site. And he told
Chuck to drive him and they gotstuck in their car for a couple
in his car for a couple of hoursuntil somebody could come and
rescue them. Wow. My personalfavorite moment with dapper
(34:47):
Dan's. It's, I mean, over andover again. I tell stories about
me and my grandmother going toDisney because So one year in
particular, I wanted to get gotmy hair cut at the barber shop
on Main Street. Today it is intown square where the fire
department or whatever, backthen it was sort of off one of
(35:09):
the side alleys. Yeah. And I wasI'm gonna get my hair cut. I let
it like grow longer and avoidErica so that I could get my
hair cut at the Main Streetbarber shop on Main Street USA
Disney. And when we get there,it had to be the first trip
because they were tired of myhair and tired of hearing about
(35:30):
us. I was gonna get a haircut.
I'm sure we stop in there. And Igot sitting in the barbershop
chair. There was the barbers.
That was me. There was mygrandmother, and there were the
dapper Dan's, and they serenadedme personally, while I got a
haircut, they say Mr. Sandmanpersonally, all I gotta do
Kelli (35:54):
not just burst Luke,
Chris, how did he not just burst
into tears? Well,
Chris (35:58):
I mean, I might be a
little more robotic back then
I'm much more likely to burstinto tears today than I was back
then. But I thought it wasreally really cool. I didn't
appreciate it for what it waslike I do now. But there I sat,
getting my hair cut. It was theentry and exit way for them onto
Main Street. So they would theywould enter from backstage
(36:21):
through the barber shop. And soit looks like though the deputy
hands are coming out of thebarbershop and so on their way
back into Backstage, I'massuming they stopped and they
serenaded me with Mr. Sammon
Unknown (36:33):
is how old do you think
you were? I was probably say
eight
Chris (36:37):
ish. Something like that.
Maybe. Now, I'll bet my grandmacried.
Kelli (36:45):
She was suddenly very
excited about the hair. Yeah.
Chris (36:48):
So that was really,
really cool. I can still see for
some reason I can see I stillsee the guy in green and his
little his little green armbandthat's around his arm. I don't
know why he stuck out to me inparticular. But what it was an
amazing moment. And I havealways, that always had a
special place in my heart forthe dapper Dan's. And they're
one of the things that if yousee them, you got to stop. You
(37:09):
got to stop and see. Yeah,
Kelli (37:10):
absolutely. They're like
the original cavalcade. Right?
They
Chris (37:13):
are they are like the
original cavalcade. So. Yeah,
the dapper Dan's always great.
Try to try to catch on Sure.
There's a million videos onYouTube.
