Damon Runyon is said to have based Sky Masterson (Guys & Dolls) on Thompson in his short story “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown.” Killed 5 Men, married 5 women, and sunk many opposing gambler’s bankrolls giving him the shared notoriety with the infamous Titanic. Cook’s career has spanned the spectrum as editor-in-chief of Golf Magazine to senior editor at Sports Illustrated to writing over 10 books on a myriad of topics.
