We are continuing our series of Psalm 119:57-64. What does the word "portion" mean in Psalm 119:57? A friend of mine told me they thought it meant a piece of something, like a piece of cake. If we look at the context it is so much more! The word refers to spoils of war. David would have seen this in his years of fighting battles. Many would have called out “my portion” in victory. When we talk about “portion” we are talking about sustaining provision. Often we don’t think of land as provision because I don’t remember the last time I grew something edible in my apartment. Home - That is where they would have built their homes or put their tent up. Refuge - This is where David would have felt safe. Inheritance - This is what their children’s children would live off of. So the psalmist is saying God is my portion — my everything. Not just a piece of cake.
