Speaker 1 (00:01):
5.
Positive ways to manage yourstress.
Many people revert to unhealthymessages of stress busting,
which may offer temporary reliefbut do very little to reduce
stress in the long term.
Some can even be harmful.
I'm talking about substanceabuse, smoking, venting to
others, playing video games orzoning out in front of the TV.
The good news is that there aremany simple but healthy,

(00:25):
effective ways of dealing withstress, but they may require you
to change the way you think andbehave.
While some stressors areunavoidable, you can limit their
ability to affect younegatively.
1.
Stop over-committing.
Except that you are not aSuperman or Superwoman.
You can't do everything and youcan't always be perfect.

(00:47):
What you might find surprisingis that most people won't expect
you to try to be more assertiveand learn to say no.
2.
Control your environment.
The people we spend time withinfluence our thoughts and
feelings.
If you are finding that you aresurrounded by naysayers or
people who are quick to findfault in everything you are

(01:08):
doing or trying to change, it'stime to re-evaluate your support
network.
You need an environment that ispositive and encouraging.
You need a tribe of people thatsay you can do it.
Stay away from negative people, especially if they drive you
crazy.
3.
Think positively.
Thinking positively isparticularly difficult if you

(01:32):
have a habit of being tough onyourself or if you've fallen
into the habit of beingpessimistic.
The key is to look for the goodin everything that happens,
rather than feeling as thoughthe universe is conspiring
against you at every turn.
This takes effort, likeanything.
The more you practice, the morefamiliar and easier it becomes.
If you find that old unresolvedissues are bubbling to the

(01:53):
surface, it will undoubtedlyhelp to talk them out.
So confide in a trusted lovedone or seek the help of a
professional therapist.
4.
Do what makes you happy.
One of the best ways to buststress is to live in the moment
and to do the things you enjoymost Play with your kids, go for
a long walk, read a book orlisten to uplifting music.

(02:16):
By making these life-enhancingactivities a priority, you are
telling yourself that yourfeelings matter.
It's kind of like givingyourself a big hug.
5.
Adopt a healthy lifestyle.
Unhealthy lifestyles are hardon the body and mind and will
inevitably exasperate yourstress levels.
Strive instead to maximize yourenergy levels in every way.

(02:39):
Ditch the junk food, caffeineand sugar and go for fresh,
home-cooked meals and snacks.
Avoid alcohol and drugs, whichcan numb you and drain your
energy, even on low doses.
Finally, be sure to get plentyof sleep.
Tiredness makes us lessresilient and more susceptible
to feeling overwhelmed bynegative emotions.

(02:59):
So there you go.
Use these five strategies tomanage your stress.
Stop over-committing, controlyour emotions, think positively,
do what makes you happy andadopt a healthy lifestyle.
Start to implement these todayand you'll notice big changes
tomorrow.
