Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to the 4PM podcast, where ideas take shape
and strategies find purpose.
I am Munir Ajam, founder andCEO of Uruk Project Management,
and I have a deep-seated passionfor project management and
community development, drawingon decades of global experience

(00:22):
across diverse industries androles.
I'm here to guide you throughthe transformative power of the
4PMs project program, productand portfolio management, and
our focus on business-integratedproject management.
Let's explore how integrationunlocks unparalleled value for
you and your organization.

(00:43):
Good day and welcome back tothe 4PM podcast.
I am Munir Ajam and today Iwant to talk about something I
think is long overdue, goingbeyond the project management
office.
The PMO is often seen as theultimate structure and goal of
project management.
However, what if I told youit's not the destination?

(01:04):
Is there something bigger, broader and far more
institutionalized?
Let's take a step back andrethink this.
A PMO is not the end game.
It's a choice, the real win, making project management a core
function in the organization, just like HR, finance or IT.

(01:24):
I mean, think about it.
You don't say let's build afinance office and then assume
finance is covered.
Finance is embedded in everypart of the business.
Shouldn't project management bethe same?
You know this next part of theepisode.

(01:47):
I want to call it from officeto organization, because this is
where things get real.
I know the PMO has been apopular concept for years.
It gives structure, oversight, guidance, sure, but many
organizations stop there.
They set up a PMO, assign a fewpeople, put a few templates in
place and call it a day.
But what if the goal isn't tobuild a PMO but to embed project

(02:09):
management into the very DNA ofthe organization?
Let's take it further.
When project management isinstitutionalized, it's not just
the project manager'sresponsibility.
Everyone, from department headsto operations to procurement,
sees projects as part of theirstrategic contribution.

(02:29):
It's not a side job, it's partof the core function.
We're not managing projects forthe sake of managing.
We're delivering value.
When project management isembedded this way, projects stop
being isolated effort.
They become tools oforganizational transformation.

(02:51):
Let's talk now about somethingjust as important building a
culture, not just a structure.
Now, if you're wondering, howdo we even start doing that?
It's not just about structure.
Even start doing that?
It's not just about structure,it's about culture.
So how do we get there?
How do we shift from PMOthinking to institutional
thinking?
It starts with culture, and Idon't mean motivational posters

(03:14):
on the wall or a few projectmanagement workshops once a year
.
I mean developing a sharedunderstanding across the
organization of what it means todeliver value through projects.
One of the key shifts weadvocate at Uruk is seeing
projects, programs, portfoliosand PMOs as parts of a bigger
system we call organizationalproject management and the

(03:35):
project management function.
And for that to succeed, theentire organization must be
aligned.
Strategy must inform projects, project must deliver products
leading to value, and value mustbe measured not just by
completing tasks but byachieving meaningful results.
We need consistent language, governance and yes, consistent

(03:58):
leadership support.
You can't expect projectmanagers to carry the load alone
.
You can't expect projectmanagers to carry the load alone
.
Part four of the episode is theroad to institutionalization.
Institutionalizing projectmanagement doesn't happen
overnight.
It takes time and it requires aroadmap.

(04:19):
Here's the thing.
We can start small.
Maybe your organization isstill in the early stages.

(04:40):
Maybe your PMO is focused ontemplates and compliance.
That's fine, but meansinvesting in developing people,
not just tools.
It means recognizing that changereal strategic change happens
through projects.
We need to move beyond the howof project management into the
why.
Why are we doing this?
What value are we delivering?

(05:01):
How is this contributing to ourbusiness goals.
To wrap up, I leave you withthis the PMO is not the final
destination, it's a stop on thejourney.
The real goal is toinstitutionalize project
management, make it core, makeit cultural.
It's not about report anddashboards.

(05:22):
It's about transformingorganizations by delivering
value consistently andstrategically.
At Uruk, we believe in thistransformation.
We've seen how powerful it canbe when project management is no
longer a side function but acore capability, and I hope
today's episode gave yousomething to reflect on.
As always, thank you for tuningin.
I wish you success today, tomorrow and always, until next

(05:47):
time.
