(00:01):
Athlete of the week interview, take two, sir.
I will live with perseverancein the spirit of Taekwondo, courtesy
for fellow students, integritywithin myself, and to become a black
belt leader.
Welcome to the ATA Nation podcast.

(00:24):
Ladies and gentlemen, sirs,ma' am, instructors, students, parents,
grandparents of SongamTaekwondo, welcome back back to the
ATA Nation podcast.
It is a pleasure to be backwith you.
Today we are featuring anotherawesome athlete of the week.
And I must say, I did thisinterview already, but I lost it.

(00:45):
I mentioned that in the recording.
So I reached back out to Mr.
Camel and we were able toreschedule, which I was very pleased
with.
Great young man.
I'm going to mention this real quick.
And I talked to him about this.
I don't know about you guys.
I am a fan of the TV show Survivor.
And recently on this season ofSurvivor, there was a young.

(01:07):
There's a contestant onSurvivor who had a speech, a stuttering
issue.
And on the show, Jeff Probst, the host, went to him and asked him
as they were doing aninterview and, and.
And the gentleman wasstruggling a little with coming up
with his word.
He asked him, hey, what wouldyou prefer?
Would you prefer that I try tostep in and, you know, ask, you know,

(01:31):
cover for you or.
Or try to help you with the words?
Or would you prefer that Ijust go ahead and let you try to
find the word?
And it was a really greatscene in which they were acknowledging
something that, you know, alot of us don't like to talk about.
Well, I had this sameconversation with Mr.
Camel because he's got alittle bit of a stuttering thing,

(01:52):
especially when he getsnervous and stuff like that.
And I was just so impressedwith this young man.
What a great leader, someonewho is working super hard.
And I, you know what, I just.
I just really enjoyed our time together.
So let's get right to the interview.
Stay tuned till afterwardsbecause we're going to talk some

(02:12):
stuff about standings, district champ, all that kind of
stuff.
Special guest interview.
ATA Nation.
We are back with an athlete ofthe week.
This athlete of the week, Ialready did this interview with.

(02:33):
We did it in person in FortWorth, and then, I don't know, my
recording went bad.
I don't know what happened.
Hey, sir.
Introduce yourself to Atnation.
Yes, sir.
So.
Oh, okay.
So my name is Adam Camel.
I.

(02:55):
I'm a second degree black beltfrom Charlotte, North Carolina.
My taekwondo school is Winnersfor Life Valentine.
My instructor is Mr.
Narimadriaga, and our schoolowner here in Winners for Life is
so senior master Gonzalo Cabrera.
That's fantastic.
I.

(03:15):
I got to see you at nationals.
I don't think I got to see you afterwards.
How did your competition go at nationals?
Yes, sir, it went pretty great.
First informs and first in weapons.
Oh, yeah, that is pretty great.
I wouldn't complain about that.

(03:37):
Yeah, that's awesome.
Hey, so as an athlete of theweek, these junior ambassadors have
been picking.
First of all, congrats on that.
That's super awesome.
Thank you.
Second, what.
You know, we.
I like to.
I like to prod and ask alittle bit.
What is your, like, yourfavorite event for tournaments?

(03:59):
My favorite event isdefinitely traditional weapons.
I love competing with my sword form.
Ah, yes, I do remember sword form.
And if I'm not mistaken, youmight be part of the ATA gumdo program.
Is that right?
Yes, sir.
Sir, I am.
How's that going?
Or have you started yet?

(04:23):
You've started, like, oh, solearning for it, but I haven't done
any, like, any of the classesyet or any of the testing.
Gotcha.
So you've watched some of thevideos they show you and get to do
some of that, but not got todo, like, the live classes on.
On zoom or whatnot, so.
Oh, super cool.

(04:43):
Oh, man.
I.
I'm a little jealous.
That sounds awesome.
And so you, sword is yourweapon to compete with.
Do you do extreme and creativeweapons as well?
Sir, I do.
Yes, sir.
I do it with.
With the nunchucks, though, not with the sword.
Ah, interesting.

(05:04):
So what made you.
What made you go, hey, I'mgonna do extremely creative with.
With Chucks instead of swords?
Yes.
So you just.
We also love the chalks.

(05:25):
It's just kind of so cool forme to be able to spin them around.
And there's not another weaponthat you can kind of spin it around
like that?
Just.
Yeah, I just loved it.
Like, with the nunchucks.
I totally can get that.
I can totally see.
Like, for traditional, thesword is such a cool, clean weapon.

(05:48):
But sometimes when you want toshow things off, you know, do some
of that creative work andwhatnot, I can see how the Chucks
would be the way to, like, hey, you know, get to show off a
little bit more.
So if there was an event thatwas like, hey, maybe not the top
of your list.
I mean, we all love all the events.
We all, you know, thinkcompetition is great.
But what would you say ismaybe not the very top?

(06:12):
That.
That would, for me, probablybe sparring, since I don't really
like the discomfort of getting kicked.
But in this past year, BecauseI've been working on that to try
to get over that fear and.
Okay.
To be able to go into the matwith confidence instead of fear.

(06:33):
I love that.
That's really good because Ithink there's a lot of people out
there that have that same thought.
They're like, hey, justgetting kick thing is not really
that great.
I don't love.
I don't mind kicking otherpeople, but getting kicked is just
not as much fun.
And it does take some work tojust like, you know, get through
that.
It's something you got to work on.
So it's a.

(06:53):
It's a natural response, though.
I mean, I think it would beweird if you were like, you got kicked
and you're like, yeah, that's.
That's cool.
Hey, I think I remember wetalked before that you are part of
some team sparring or team combat.
Is that correct?
Yes, sir, I am.
Do you do both or just combat?

(07:15):
You do both, sir.
Team sparring and team combat.
Excellent.
And did you guys compete outthere at nationals?
Are you guys ranked?
Getting ready for districts?
Yes, sir.
We are.
Are in for the districts, but.

(07:36):
Okay.
But for nationals, unfortunately, we did not compete.
No problem.
You know, it happens sometimes.
You got to get all the peoplethere, and it's a little harder.
You know, it's a little easier.
When you Pittsburgh, you guysare a little closer there.
You might be able to get, youknow, more people that way.
So we've got districts rightaround the corner.
What are your goals for districts?
And then world champion, yougot this sweet red shirt on, so it

(08:00):
looks like you.
You've accomplished a goalonce before, but what are you looking
for?
Districts and then worlds thiscoming year.
So for districts, of course, because I was.
Want to be able to getdistrict titles in all of my events.

(08:23):
But so really for my mainfocus this year is forms and weapons,
because I feel like I'm sopretty good in those this year, and
I have a lot of confidencewith those that.
You know, that makes a bigdifference, that confidence.
And is that what you'relooking for for world championships
as well?
Yes, sir.

(08:43):
Forms and weapons are the mainfocus there.
I like it.
I like it.
I was just talking to mycompetition guys yesterday about
making sure, you know, as wego into that new year, we're.
We're picking a focus.
Sometimes it's, you know, everybody wants to be an expert at
everything.
And yes.
What do they say?
You can be a jack of alltrades, but a master of none.
So you got to work, work.

(09:04):
No, there are.
There Are those freaks outthere that just can do it all and
get like titles and everything?
Which that's just.
So what.
Before we go on to my finalquestion, what other kind of goals
do you have for yourself inmartial arts?
Just maybe not competitionwise, but just all around as part
of your training.

(09:29):
Okay.
So for me, that would probablybe to become an ATA brand ambassador,
because I would love to beable to represent ATA and kind of
to show my gratitude to ATAfor everything that it has done for
me, like, over the years.
That's awesome.

(09:49):
That's a big goal.
That's pretty cool.
There's been a lot of greatambassador out there.
So, um, you know, I know youput your hat in the ring, hopefully,
you know, they'll.
They'll pick you.
That'd be awesome.
Hopefully, yes.
If not this year, you know, you can always reapply be able to,
you know, just like, you know, just like world champion.
You know, sometimes it takesmore than one.
So, hey, most important question.

(10:11):
What does it mean to you to bean athlete that goes beyond the belt?
Yes, sir.
So for me to go beyond thebelt, it means to not only be able
to gain all these, like, allthese, okay, so life skills and stuff
like that, but also to be ableto help others gain all of those

(10:36):
life skills.
I'm a first level instructorat my school and it's very important
for me to be able to helpother students instant game things
like self esteem, confidence,discipline, and.
And sometimes if they needthat little push beyond their comfort
zone, I'm always happy to help.

(10:59):
A great example of thisactually is with my mom.
She's doing Taekwondo with me.
And so in the beginning, because I remember that me and my
instructor were trying so hardto push her to get into it, and she
was skin and she was so scared.
She was like, no way, zero percent.

(11:19):
Because of two reasons.
One, because at that time shehad some back problems and she was
scared that if she got intoall this kicking and jumping and
punching, that that would makethem even worse.
And then.
Okay, the second reason wasthat she had a fear of going up in
front of people and performing.

(11:40):
Even if it was just a I getfront of her class, okay, so doing
her form or something, thenshe got scared, okay?
But finally, because she wasable to get over that fear.
And so now she's able to get into.
And not only has it actuallyhelped her back problems, but now

(12:00):
she's able to get over thatfear, like of going up in front of
people and competing.
And now she's a Two time statechamp and a two time district champ.
I'm so proud of her for that.
Oh my goodness.
Two time stage champ, two timedistrict champ.
Go from completely afraid ofbeing in front of people.
That is fantastic.
What a great example of, youknow, you getting to share the benefits

(12:26):
that you've learned throughmartial arts and then getting to
see that in your own family.
That's super cool.
I love that.
Well, sir, it has been apleasure to get to talk to you a
second time.
I think you might be theathlete of the week that I've got
to know the best because I'vegot to talk to you twice as much
as everybody else.
But congratulations on beingathlete of the week and thank you

(12:50):
for.
You're welcome.
Thank you for being aninspiration for all of those out
there and good luck atdistricts and world championships.
Yes, sir.
Thank you.
Here's what's going on in ATA nation.
In nation, it is that time of year.

(13:12):
We are furiously running intothe end of the season, the postseason
events and then getting readyfor a new season.
So as I record this, I havejust recently received an email from
Chief Master Stevens that the final.
The state.
How.
How.
The preliminary finalstandings are live on atamartialarts.com

(13:37):
you need to go and confirmthat your points are correct.
If you see any discrepancieswith any tournaments that were held
within the last 30 days, youneed to send those to ATA.
The the all of it is on socialmedia, but you send that to tournaments@ataonline.com

(13:59):
you need to make sure youinclude your full name, ATA number,
tournament date and location,a brief description of the issue,
the missing points details, whatever.
This has to be done by Sunday,May 11th.
The end of the day.
Sunday, May 11th, 11:59pm okay.

(14:20):
On Sunday, May 11th.
If it is not done by then, itwill not now just because the preliminary
finals are out there.
You are not a district champor a state champion yet.
You have to wait until thosefinals are finalized.
So they get this a couple ofdays to make sure all the points

(14:43):
are correct.
And then from there to the ATAhas to take all those that they get
between now on Sunday to checkif they're all okay.
And then they will post thefinal finals that then will trigger
that one.
If you you got the title, youknow, for state.
Congrats.
You know, you can startcelebrating then.

(15:04):
Not until then.
But then that will also showwho is going to be qualified for
districts.
District registration has notopened yet.
We will learn when districtregistration opens by talking to
your instructor and by stayingtuned to ATA's social media channels,
they will help you know thatdistrict's registration is open and

(15:28):
that district's registrationwill be then a very short window.
It always is.
But I, I'm guessing, I have noinside knowledge on this, but I'm
guessing that it's going to beextra short because districts and
the end of the season was closer.
My, my district has one of thefirst districts in the country.
It's the end of May and wejust had, you know, these preliminary

(15:50):
finals come out and it'salmost the 10th already.
So there's going to be a shortwindow to register.
All the registrations must bedone online.
You cannot register anywhere else.
You cannot register in person.
It must be done atataeasysignup.com when district registration

(16:11):
opens.
Be very aware of how you'reregistering and what you're registering
for.
I have been in the position tohave to turn people away at districts
because they signed up for thewrong thing.
District championshipregistration will be on ata easy
signup.com when it opens now.
Or world championships, theSuper 20, which is the new season.

(16:38):
That registration is already open.
You can go now and registerfor the Super 20.
All right, go do that.
Get started.
Do it now.
Get registered for all of theseminars and all that kind of stuff
on atamartialarts.com youcan't register for world championship
tournament the, the Super 20 until.

(16:59):
Or excuse me, onatamartialarts.com that's on ata
easy sign up now.
The TOC registration, they'llannounce that as well.
They have to finalize all thestuff before TOC registration.
They have to get theirdistrict people all that stuff.
So don't worry about it.
But remember, the TOC is separate.

(17:20):
That's the Tournament ofChampions in Arizona is separate
from the Super 20, which isthe new season tournament where you
get, you know, 20 points forfirst place.
That Super 20 is open now.
You can register, get startedthere for that.
All registrations for all ofthose things and basically every
tournament you go to from nowon, it's going to be on an ATA easy

(17:40):
sign up.
So head over there, create anaccount, talk to your instructor
about it.
Because sometimes they mighthave created an account for you.
So make sure you talk.
I think that gets us most ofthe information for districts and
state title stuff.
I just wanted, as that wascoming in, I wanted to get that to
you.
Make sure you help those inyour school who this may be a new

(18:00):
process for.
Understand the process.
Some of you guys, a lot of youguys out there are pros.
You understand how this works.
But even those people who'vebeen around for a while, I watch
them ask questions and like,is this a.
So just make sure you'restaying up to date.
I would definitely hit, youknow, Atas social media pages and
do that thing where you get tosee all their posts.
You know, make sure you'rereally checking those because you

(18:22):
might miss something.
That's going to take care ofit for us today.
Thank you for tuning in.
And until next time, get outthere and go beyond the belt.
Thanks for listening toanother episode of the ATA Nation
podcast.
Be sure to subscribe and sharewith your ATA family.

(18:47):
Hey, guys, that's gonna takecare of it.
