(00:21):
today.
There's more names, of course, because that's what there are.
There's more names, but I loveso much a connection that
happens today.
There's more names, of course, because that's what there are.
There's more names, but I loveso much a connection that
happens and it just reminds methat sometimes there's just
experiences that you have thatyou're never the same after that
, and we're going to get intothat in just a moment.

just making it happen overthere.
Also, you can go tothebiblebreakdowncom where we
are archiving these episodes, one after the other, and one day

(01:04):
we're going to have every oneof those episodes on there, and
I have this plan.
I want to go back one day andadd commentary to every one of
those.
So you want to make sure you goover there and you can read
some of the stuff we're alreadydoing.
We have the different versesfor every single book of the
Bible that's over there.
And, man, the more we dig, themore we find, and I love this
just community of people thatare reading the Bible every

(01:24):
single day, one chapter at atime.
And, speaking of that, if youhave your Bible, I want to open
up with me to 1 Chronicles,chapter 26.
I want to remind you ofsomething that's happened in
this particular book and overthe course of Israel's history.
First of all, remember theoverall theme is that when God
is with you, there's always hope.
God is with you, there's alwayshope, and it's that idea of the

(01:46):
more we experience God'spresence, the more of God's
presence we want to experience, because once you experience the
Lord, nothing else will satisfy.
And it reminds me of thisopportunity that I have, and it
was one time when I was younger, when we first, my wife and I,
we first got married.
You know, we really I grew upwe didn't really have a lot of

(02:09):
opportunities to do a lot ofdifferent things, but one of the
things we love to do is love togo out to eat, right, and we
would go to this Chineserestaurant and we would go and
experience just Chinese buffet, and it was just fun, whatever.
But then one day I went to thisplace where they had like high
quality sushi, and if you don'tlike sushi, then this is wasted

(02:33):
on you, whatever your favoritefood is.
But I had always experiencedjust buffet style sushi, which
was fine, but it was what it was.
Well, I went to this nicerestaurant and had like this
quality sushi.
Well, after I had this qualitysushi, the buffet just didn't do
it anymore.
You know what I'm saying?

(02:54):
Like I just needed the goodquality food, right.
And so now, luckily, there is alocal person.
His name is Tommy.
If you know Tommy, you knowwhat's going on.
He is like the best sushi chefever, right, he is so good and
because of that, like I'm ableto enjoy it.
Because I was ruined once upona time when I got like this
quality food and so now, justwhatever won't satisfy, it's

(03:16):
gotta be quality.
Well, that's the same thing thathappened in this text.
In this text, just much more sobecause the Bible said that
when David saw that the peoplethat had taken the Ark from the
Philistines they had brought itback.
They wanted to bring the Arkback to the city of David,

(03:38):
jerusalem, but because theydidn't know what to do with it
and all this bad stuff happened, they weren't able to bring the
Ark of the Covenant back to thecity of Jerusalem.
Remember, the Ark of theCovenant was a representation of
the presence of God.
So they had to drop the Ark ofthe Covenant off at a guy's
house named Obed-Edom and he hadto take care of the Ark.

(03:58):
And the Bible says God blessedObed-Edom and all that he had
because the ark was there.
Well, later David figured outhow to properly transport the
ark back to the city of David, jerusalem, and so they did that.
But you imagine, after beingthat close to the presence of
God, what did it do to Obed-Edomand his family?

(04:21):
Did they just go back to theirlife, or after they experienced
the greatest thing ever?
The Bible says in Psalm 16 thatin your presence is fullness of
joy, at your right hand arepleasures forevermore.
So once Obed-Edom and hisfamily experienced what it was
like to be close to God'spresence.
What happened?
Well, we're going to find outwhat happened to Obed-Edom and

(04:43):
his family after having thisencounter with the presence of
God.
We to find out what happened toObed-Edom and his family after
having this encounter with thepresence of God.
We don't know what happened tohim beforehand, but he
completely changed his lifeafter, and we're going to figure
out what happened to them inthe text today.
So if you're ready, here we go.
The Bible says this in 1Chronicles 26, verse 1.
It's a bunch of names, but it'sgoing to be the one family's
name that's going to stand out, family's name that was going to

(05:04):
stand out, and that is this.
These are the divisions of thegatekeepers, verse one from the
Korahites, there was Maheshela, son of Korah, and the family of
Abisheth, the sons of Meleshemaand Zechariah, who was the
oldest, jededale the second, jedediah the third, jethanel the
fourth, eliam the fifth, jehoanan the sixth and Eleoni

(05:25):
the seventh.
But look at this, the sons ofObed-Edom, also gatekeepers,
were Shemaiah the oldest, jehoshabab the second, joach the
third, sakaar the fourth, jethaniel the fifth, ammoniel
the sixth, issachar the seventhand Pulatia the eighth.
And God richly blessedObed-Edom.

(05:46):
Obed-edom's son, sheshemiah, had sons with great ability who
earned positions of greatauthority in the clan, and their
names were Othani, raphael, obed and Elizabeth.
Their relatives, eliyahu andShemakiah, were also very
capable men.

(06:07):
All these descendants ofObed-Edom, including their sons
and grandsons, 62 of them in all, were capable men, well
qualified for their work.
So what happened to the peopleof Obed-Edom?
God so empowered and changedthis wonderful encounter that
Obed-Edom and his family hadthat they went from whatever

(06:29):
they did to they becamegatekeepers.
Had that they went fromwhatever they did to they became
gatekeepers.
They became those who thenbecame protectors of the people
of God and of the presence ofGod.
So, once again, it's like thePsalm said better to have one
day in your courts than athousand anywhere else.
That's such an encounter withGod that they said I just want
to be around him, I just want,if I have to be a gatekeeper in

(06:51):
the presence of God, I wouldrather do that than do anything
else because of their encounterwith God.
And so Obed-Edom and his sonsbecame gatekeepers for the
presence of God, and I wonder ifit had to do with their
encounter with God by hostinghis presence for a season in his
house.
I don't know.
Something very interesting tothink about.
Let's keep reading Verse 8, allof these descendants of

(07:15):
Obed-Edom, including all theirsons and grandsons, 62 of them
in all, were very capable menand were qualified for their
work.
Verse 9, shemaliah had 18 sonsand relatives who were also very
capable men.
Hoshiah of the Merishiah clanappointed Shemri as their leader
.
Among his sons, though he wasnot the oldest, his other sons
included Helkiah II, tobiah III,zechariah IV and Hoshiah's sons

(07:39):
and relatives.
They also served as gatekeepers, numbering 13 in all.
These divisions of thegatekeepers were named for their
family leaders and, like theother Levites, they served at
the house of the Lord and theywere assigned by families for
guard duty at their variousgates, without regard to age or
training, for it had all beendecided by means of sacred lots.

(08:01):
Their responsibility for theeast gate went to Melchizedek
and his group.
The north gate was assigned tothe son, zechariah, a man of
unusual wisdom.
The south gate went toObed-Edom and his sons, who were
put in charge of the storehouse.
Shephuim and Mosiah and thesons were assigned to the west
gate, the gateway leading up tothe temple.

(08:22):
The guards' duties were dividedevenly Six Levites were
assigned each day to the eastgate, four to the north gate,
four to the south gate and twopairs at the storehouse.
Six were assigned each day tothe west gate, four to the
gateway leading up to the templeand two to the courtyard.
They were also the divisions ofthe gatekeepers for the clans

(08:44):
of Korah and Mererai.
Other Levites, led by Asherah, were in charge of the treasuries
for the house of God and thetreasuries of the gifts
dedicated to the Lord From thefamily of Libni and the clan of
Gershon.
Gehel was their leader.
The sons of Jehel and Zethemwere the brother of Joel, who

(09:06):
was in charge of the treasuriesof the house of the Lord.
These were the leaders of thedescendants of Amram, izhar,
hebron and Uziel From the clanof.
Here's a whole bunch more nameshere we go From the clan of
Amram.
Shubael was the descendants ofGershom, son of Moses.
He was the chief officer of thetreasuries.
His relatives, through Eleazar, were Rabanai, jeshahai, joram,

(09:35):
zichri and Shalemoth.
Shalemoth and his relativeswere in charge of the treasuries
containing the gifts that KingDavid, the family leaders and
the generals and captains andthe other officers of the army
had dedicated to the Lord.
These men dedicated some of theplunder they had gained in
battle to maintain the house ofthe Lord.
Shalemoth and his relativesalso cared for the gifts

(09:55):
dedicated to the Lord by Samuelthe seer, saul the son of Kish,
abner the son of Nir and Joabthe son of Zariah.
All of the other dedicatedgifts were in their care too.
From the clan of Ishar cameKeniah.
He and his son were givenadministrative responsibilities
over Israel as officers andjudges.

(10:17):
I had a story about Kenahiah, but I'm going to save it for
later.
If you wonder why, I kind ofwhatever, I kind of just got
distracted, I'm back.
Here we go.
Verse 30.
From the clans of Hebron cameHashabiah.
He and his relatives, 1,700capable men, were put in charge
of the Israelite lands west ofthe Jordan River.
They were responsible for allmatters related to the things of

(10:40):
the Lord and the service of theking in that area.
Also from the clan of Hebroncame Jeriah, who was the leader
of the Hebanites.
According to the genealogicalrecords, in the 14th year of
David's reign, a search was madeof the records of capable men
from the clan of Hebron and werefound at Jazir in the land of

(11:00):
Gilead, and there were 2,700capable men among the relatives
of Jariah.
King David sent them to theeast side of the Jordan River
and put them in charge of thetribes of Reuben and Gad and the
half-tribe of Manasseh.
So remember what I was tellingyou before and, as we get ready

(11:22):
to finish up our time, I want tofigure out what this means to
us today.
I was telling you that when Iwas younger, my family, we loved
to eat Chinese food and wewould go and we would have a
good time and all this stuff.
But then one day I went to arestaurant and I tried some good
, high quality sushi and fromthen on I was ruined.
It just didn't taste the same.
After that, when I went back toother places, I tried other

(11:43):
things, but I just got ruined.
I really loved this certainkind of thing.
Maybe you've had the sameexperience.
Maybe, if you like coffee, youwent to a gourmet coffee shop or
a certain kind of food.
I know some people that wouldsay that once they cooked their
own steak on their own grill, they just don't like going to
restaurants anymore.
They just like it how they likeit, right.
But you get the point.

(12:04):
Sometimes you have a certainencounter that after that, other
things just don't seem tosatisfy.
Well, it looks like whathappened to Obed-Edom's life,
whatever it was he was doing.
Beforehand.
He had this encounter with Godand for just a little while he
was able to host the presence ofGod in his house by having the
Ark of the Covenant there, andafter that he and his family

(12:25):
became gatekeepers in thepresence of God.
Because I wonder if he said I'drather be a gatekeeper
gatekeepers in the presence ofGod?
Because I wonder if he said I'drather be a gatekeeper.
This is as close as I can getto God's presence.
Fine, because at this pointnothing else satisfies.
And so from then on, he becamepart of this group.
I want to tell you something Ifyou make time for God's presence
in your life, if you make aplan on how you're going to host

(12:47):
the presence of God in yourlife, can I tell you get to the
place to where nothing else willsatisfy.
I've talked to people who havemade a point to say every
morning, I'm going to get up 30minutes earlier than I have
before and I'm going to spend 30minutes.
I'm going to read God's word,I'm going to take time to pray.
I'm going to take time, I'mtrying to worship service, a

(13:07):
worship song, and I'm going to.
It's going time.
I'm going to turn on a worshipservice, a worship song, and I'm
just going to have time whereI'm going to host God's presence
.
I'm going to say, god, I'mgoing to draw close to you.
Your word says, if I will drawclose to you, you will draw
close to me.
So for 30 minutes I'm going todo that.
And they get to the place towhere that becomes their
favorite part of the day, wherenothing else will satisfy If

(13:28):
they miss that time with God, itjust changes the scope of their
day because they are hostingthe presence of God.
I want to make you a promise Ifyou will find the time during
the day and I know differenttimes, we go through different
seasons and it can be very hardto find any kind of extra time,
and so there's grace for thisright.
So, whatever time you havemaybe you have 15 minutes a day,

(13:48):
maybe it's 30 minutes a day,maybe, man, maybe it's an hour a
day, maybe it's not but if youfind time and you say, god, I'm
going to dedicate this time toyou, I'm going to host you, I'm
going to spend time, I'm goingto turn off my phone, I'm going
to turn off whatever, and I'mgoing to read, read my Bible,
like what we're doing right nowtogether.
I'm going to take time, I'mgoing to pray, I'm going to talk
to you and I tell you, if youdo that, you're going to find

(14:11):
that's going to become yourfavorite time of the day.
You're going to find time whenyou're going to start to
reorganize stuff.
Like Obadita, I'm going toreorganize my entire life.
So I have time to spend withGod, because once you experience
the Lord, nothing else willsatisfy you.
Give it a try and see.
Take a seven-day challenge withme For seven days, find a

(14:33):
certain time of the day, if youcan, and every day at that time,
host the presence of God.
Now what that's going to looklike is maybe we do this
devotion together and then afterthat, instead of going to
whatever, if you have the time Iknow some people you know they
listen to this while on theirway to work.
So if you have time after that, you take a few moments and you
just spend a little time in thepresence of God and, instead of

(14:54):
asking God for anything, you arehosting him, you are worshiping
him.
You are spending time with God,with nothing else on the agenda
, and watch what God will do,just remembering how big God is,
how sufficient God is, how holyGod is, and watch how it begins
to just shape the rest of yourday, and maybe you will say,

(15:16):
like I did when I discoveredsushi.
I would say you know what?
Nothing else quite satisfiesquite like that good quality
sushi.
Well, in a much, much biggerway, nothing else quite
satisfies like time in God'spresence.
Watch what will happen.
I think you'll find that onceyou experience the Lord, nothing

(15:37):
else will do.
Let's pray together.
God, thank you so much for today.
Thank you, god, that one momentin your presence is better than
a thousand anywhere else.
God, I know that some of us, wego through seasons when we
don't have a lot of time.
We have so many things.
We have family responsibilities, work responsibilities and all
of that.
So, god, I pray that you willknow us and I know that you

(15:58):
always meet us where we are.
So whatever time we can give toyou, I pray that you will honor
it, we will help us to hold itsacred, and that whatever time
we give to you, you will blessand that we will have encounters
with you that will change ourlives forever.
We're thankful for you today.
In Jesus' name we pray Amen, amen.
Well, god's word says in 1Chronicles 29, I know, my God,

(16:21):
that you examine our hearts andyou rejoice when you find
integrity there.
I want you to know God sees you, god knows you and he's for you
more than you can imagine.
I love you.
I'll see you tomorrow for 1Chronicles, chapter 27.
