Could the very furnishings of Solomon's temple offer us profound insights into enhancing our worship today? Join me, Pastor Brandon, as we traverse the hallowed details of 2 Chronicles 4, where we uncover the depths of meaning behind the temple's sacred artifacts. From the grand bronze altar to the vast "sea" basin, each carefully crafted piece served a purpose beyond its physical function. They were instruments designed to elevate worship, not to be worshipped themselves. As we reflect on the gold and bronze masterpieces like lampstands and tables, we'll unravel how these elements can still resonate within our modern spiritual practices, enhancing the way we connect with the divine.

But our spiritual exploration doesn't end at the temple doors; it's a relentless quest for God's presence in our everyday lives. Imagine the transformative power of engaging with the divine daily, not just in the quiet of Sunday service. Together, we'll delve into the promise of 2 Chronicles 16:9, which beckons a heart fully devoted to God—a heart like yours, seeking to be filled with his constant presence. This episode is an invitation to step up as active participants in our faith, eager to share the hope and joy that a life intertwined with God's presence brings. Let's journey together to embrace a worship that transcends time, space, and even the most ornate temple furnishings.

Speaker 1 (00:01):
Well, everybody, welcome to the Bible Breakdown
podcast with your host, pastorBrandon, today.
2 Chronicles, chapter 4, andtoday's title is A Place to
Worship.
A Place to Worship.
We're not worshiping the place, but this is the place where we
worship.
That sounds confusing when Isay it out loud.
Hopefully it'll make sense injust a moment, but as we get
ready to get started, before wedo that, if you like what we're

(00:22):
doing here, make sure you like, share and subscribe to the
podcast and the YouTube channel.
We don't tell you this everyday, but please share this with
someone.
If you're in life group withsomebody or you're connected to
somebody, and especially if youhear them say I really want to
read my Bible, but I don't getit, I don't understand, I don't
like it.
That's wonderful.
We all Ask them to come and tolisten to this with you, or just

(00:42):
to listen to it, because, man,the more we dig, the more we
find, and that's what we're allhere to do is we're all growing
in God together as we read histimeless, changeless, inerrant,
infallible word of God, and it'sawesome to do this together.
Also, make sure that you aregoing to the Bible Breakdown
discussion on Facebook, wherethey break down these chapters
every single day better than Iam, and it is an honor to read

(01:05):
God's Word together every day.
Okay, all right, if you haveyour Bibles, want to open up
with me to 2 Chronicles 4.
Remember that the overall themeof this passage is God is with
those who are faithful.
God is with those who arefaithful.
And Solomon.
In chapter 1, he says God, Iwant to be faithful, I want to
be faithful with what you'vegiven me to do, and so God
blesses him.

(01:25):
And then, chapter 2, he goesand he asks another king hey, I
need you to hook me up, I needpeople who can carve stuff, I
need all this wood.
We're about to build a housefor God, and they do.
That's what chapter 3 is allabout, is he's building stuff
and everything gets gold.
Everything, it's gold, everything is plated with gold.

(01:50):
If you stand still too long,he's going to cover you in gold.
I mean it's amazing.
And now, chapter four he's nowputting the furniture in the
temple, and all of this is aplace to worship.
When you think of this, theseare all tools that they're going
to use to worship God, and Ilove that idea, because all of
these are not the worship.
They are tools to help usworship, and we're going to talk
about how that impacts ourlives today.
So, if you're ready, 2Chronicles 4, verse 1 says this

(02:12):
Solomon also made a bronze altar30 feet long, 30 feet wide and
15 feet high.
So that thing's super tall.
So they had to have steps towalk up to sacrifice on the
altar.
That means these priests, bythe way, were muscled up.
Okay, these guys had to havesome muscles because they're
carrying these sacrifices upthese steps right.

(02:33):
So this is amazing.
So here we go.
Then he cast a great round basin, 15 feet across from rim to rim
, and he called it the sea, because that's probably how big
it looked, because it was sevenand a half feet deep, about 45
feet in circumference.
This had water.
This is where they washed theirhands.
That's huge.

(02:54):
No wonder they called it thesea, verse three it was
encircled just below its rim bytwo rows of figures that
resembled oxen.
There were about six oxen perfoot all the way around and they
were cast as part of the basin.
The sea was placed on a base of12 bronze oxen, all facing
outward three facing the north, three facing the west, three

(03:17):
face the south and three facethe east and the sea rested on
them.
So what you've got is you'vegot this base of these carved
oxen and you've got this big oldthese carved oxen and you've
got this big old bowl seven anda half foot deep.
That was on top of it wherethey washed their hands and they
washed out the different potsand pans and different things
that they would use for thesacrifices.
But they use this to.

(03:38):
This was a sink, a really bigsink that they call the sea.
All right, verse five the wallsof the sea were about three
inches thick and its rims flaredout like a cup and resembled a
water lily blossom, and it couldhold about 16,500 gallons of
water.
Bet you it could.
All right, verse six he alsomade 10 smaller basins for

(04:01):
washing the utensils, for theburnt offerings, see.
So they used it for all thosedifferent kinds of things, and
the smaller ones for that kindof stuff.
He set five on the south sideand five on the north.
But the priests washedthemselves in the sea.
Of course, my mental picture isthey just dove in.
I don't think it worked likethat, but still they could have,
because that's how I mean somepeople's swimming pools are not

(04:22):
that deep.
Anyway, let's move on.
He then cast ten gold lampstandsaccording to the specifications
that he had been given, and heput them in the temple.
Five were placed on the southwall and five were placed on the
north wall.
He also built ten tables andplaced them in the temple five
along the south wall and fivealong the north wall and he

(04:43):
molded 100 gold basins.
He then put a courtyard for thepriests and also the large
outer courtyard.
He made doors for the courtyardentrances and overlaid them
with bronze not gold, but bronze.
The great bronze basin calledthe sea was placed near the
southeastern corner of thetemple.

(05:04):
Haram Abi, that's the craftsmanguy from a couple chapters ago.
He also made the necessarywater basins, shovels and bowls.
So at last, haram Abi completedeverything King Solomon had
assigned him to take to thetemple of God Two pillars, two
bowl-shaped capitals on top ofthe pillars, two networks of
interwoven chains that decoratedthe capitals.

(05:26):
400 pomegranates that hung fromthe chains on the capitals.
Two rows of pomegranates foreach of the chain networks that
decorated the capitals.
400 pomegranates that hung fromthe chains on the capitals.
Two rows of pomegranates foreach of the chain networks that
decorated the capital on the topof the pillars, water carts
holding the basins, the sea andthe 12 oxen under it, ash
buckets, shovels, meat hooks andall the related articles.

(05:46):
In other words, that joker, hewas busy.
Hammurabi made all these thingsof burnished bronze for the
temple of the Lord, just as KingSolomon had directed.
The king had them cast in claymolds in the Jordan Valley
between Succoth and Zeratham.
Solomon used such greatquantities of bronze that its
weight could not be determined.
Solomon also made all thefurnishings for the temple of

(06:08):
God Gold altar tables for thetemple of God, gold altar tables
for the bread of presents, lampstands and their lamps of
solid gold to burn in front ofthe most holy place as
prescribed, the flowerdecorations, lamps, tongs and
all of purest gold, because, ofcourse, lamp snuffers, bowls,
ladles and incense burners allof solid gold.

(06:29):
The doors of the entrance ofthe most holy place and the main
rooms of the temple wereoverlaid with gold, because of
course they were right.
And here's the amazing thingAll of this was beautiful.
I mean, I can't even imagine.
My imagination fails me tothink about all of this and all
of it was overlaid with gold.
Like it is amazing to thinkabout.

(06:51):
But all of these things weretools tools for them to worship,
just vehicles for them toworship.
The goal was not the things, thegoal was worship, and that's
one of the things we have tothink about, and I think about
this when we come to church.
You know, I don't know who allis listening to this, and I know

(07:11):
we have some people listeningfrom all over the world, and
actually I talked to someone theother day who listens to this
podcast, and they live in aplace where they actually can't
go to church every weekendbecause there are no churches
close by, and so they're onlyable to go to church
occasionally, and so it's awonderful blessing for them to

(07:36):
be able to listen to thispodcast, among others, and so I
I'm aware of that.
I'm going to be very carefulthat I don't in any way talk
negatively about you, so this isnot for you but sometimes when
we go to church, I think it'svery important that we be
excellent in everything we cando, not perfect.
Perfect perfection's impossible, you know, as far as in like
what we can do, but excellent Dothe very best we can with what
we have.
So we want to make sure thatyou know the floor is clean and
the screens are clean and allthis stuff and all this kind of

(07:56):
just all this good.
But we never can miss thereason why we gather.
We don't gather to have aconcert every Sunday.
Now, at our church.
I'm so proud of our worshipteam that gets up every Sunday.
They practice, they prepare andthen they lead us in worship.
But if you're not careful, westart to think that all of that

(08:17):
is there for us.
Like, we start to think well, Iwonder what songs are going to
sing today for me.
I wonder if they're going tosing my favorite song.
Well, it doesn't really matterand I mean that respectfully,
but it doesn't really matter.
It's not for you, it is toengage with you as we worship
God.
You know, get up there and wego hey, I wonder if that
preacher is going to preach amessage.

(08:37):
I like I wonder if he's goingto be funny or if he's going to
be engaging, wonder if he'sgoing to be passionate, whatever
.
But here's the thing it's notfor you, but it's to instruct
you to God.
Can I tell you, I have thisweird dichotomy every single
Sunday when I get up to preach, because on one end, it is for
you, but it's for you to take astep to get closer to God.
The ultimate audience is Jesus.

(08:59):
I'm in my mind, I'm thinkingGod, this is for you today.
It's for your people to connectwith you.
So the message is merely avehicle for us to worship.
The songs we sing on Sunday arevehicles for us to worship.
The lights, the screens, thechairs we sit in, the coffee,

(09:23):
the food that we serve, all thethings that we use in our kids'
area all of those things arevehicles that are not for us.
They are to help us as weworship God.
And I wonder if we could get inour minds that when we go to
church, we're not the focus Godis.
I wonder if that would changehow we see all this.
Because when I first read thischapter, I was like, wow, this

(09:44):
stuff is beautiful and this isamazing.
I wonder how it must have feltwhen they went in there and they
saw all this stuff and I waskind of thinking and I started
thinking wait a minute, it's notreally about that.
These were all tools to assistthem in worshiping God.
It wasn't really for them, itwas for God, and I know we live
in such an interesting time inour life where there are a lot
of churches who their goal forSunday morning is to focus on

(10:08):
lost people.
There's nothing wrong with that.
They focus on people who don'tknow God, and so they prepare
everything they possibly can sothat they can focus on the lost
person, to share the gospel withthem and make sure everything's
okay, and they'll even playsecular music on Sunday morning
because they want to engage withthat lost person.
And if that's the goal of yourchurch, well, praise the Lord
and I hope that you're reachinga lot of people.

(10:28):
However, I think we have toalways be careful that we never
forget that, primarily, churchis not for any person, it's for
God, and so if you were tryingto reach people so that they can
know God, then praise the Lord.
But we never can forget that, ultimately, when we come
together, it's not for the lostperson, it's not for the found

(10:50):
person, it's for Jesus, and ourgoal is Him.
And when we do that, I thinkGod will meet with us there.
And so I want to challenge you,I want to encourage you Next
time you go to church.
When you go to church, don'tfocus on what songs are going to
sing.
Focus on using those songs astools for worship.

(11:11):
When the preacher gets up topreach, that message don't focus
on.
If it's on your favoritescripture if he has all the
right jokes, it's.
Is this going to be a toolthat's going to help me get
closer to the Lord and watch howit starts to change how you
view church.
Then it doesn't matter whatsong they sing, it doesn't
matter how good or how bad thatpreacher is.

(11:32):
All you need is a vehiclebecause, no matter what happens,
I'm going to take a step closerto God today.
And so if you sing my favoritesong, great.
If you sing a song, I don'tknow, as long as it's about
Jesus and that preacher he canbe funny or he can be as dry as
cracker juice, I don't care Ishe going to help me get closer
to Jesus.
When you start to do that, you're never going to have a bad
Sunday again.
And what's even better is ifyou start to serve and you start

(11:54):
helping other people take stepscloser to Jesus, it just gets
better and better and better, and I love it.
So think about that today.
Let's pray God.
Thank you so much for giving usthe opportunity to worship you,
god.
Your word says that it's inyour presence that we find
fullness of joy.
Close to you is where we findpleasures forevermore.

(12:15):
For some of us, god, it's beenso long since we've been in your
presence Because many times wedon't get into your presence
during the day, during the week, and then we go to church on
Sunday.
We unintentionally have maybesome different kinds of
perspectives.
I pray today you'll help us tocourse correct in some areas and
we'll say I'm not going to waituntil Sunday, I'm going to get

(12:36):
into his presence every day sothat then when I get with my
brothers and sisters in Christon Sunday, man, we're going to
go even further together.
We're going to take stepscloser to you, and that's going
to then compel us to go out andtell other people because, man,
we are not salesmen, we aresatisfied customers and we can't
wait to share the hope that wehave found with others.

(12:56):
We celebrate you today InJesus' name.
We pray Amen and don't forget.
2 Chronicles 16,.
9 says the eyes of the Lordsearch the whole earth in order
to strengthen those whose heartsare fully committed to him.
I love you.
I'll see you tomorrow.
First Chronicles, excuse me.
