127 – What does the Bible have to say about spring cleaning?
My wife came across this verse in Psalms and it’s what really prompted our efforts to de-clutter.
I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. Psalms 101:2 KJV
It's really what inspired us to want to do some serious spring cleaning a few weeks ago.
I got to wondering if there was anything in the Bible about spring cleaning, accumulating and getting rid of clutter or things that were no longer needed.
As it turns out the Bible has some very helpful insights about getting rid of things that are no longer needed or useful.
Here are some of the things I discuss:
- Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. God prunes away the parts of the vine that aren't productive (Okay, I know it's a gardening metaphor, but the ideas apply)
- Jesus's parable of the woman who lost a silver coin and swept her house until she found it
- My wife found a treasured oatmeal raisin cookie recipe. You can see it on her website
- Jesus's warning about what happens after you clean your house, or your heart
- If something causes you to sin, get rid of it
- Clean your own house, get your own life put together first before you try to fix someone else (Jesus says not to fuss over a speck in someone else's eye, but to get the log out of your own eye first
- Don't hoard material things, don't store up your treasures on earth
- Paul realized he shouldn't keep the childish way of thinking and acting
- Seek first the kingdom of God
The spring cleaning of your house is only a metaphor for the mental and spiritual spring cleaning that takes place in your heart when you put God first in your life.
