From their website: “A father and son duo act from Fleetwood, UK.

“Dion has always followed his dad’s singing career very closely and loves joining in when Wal is on stage, but they have never sung as a duo until April 2020. The coronavirus lockdown in the UK impacted a lot of people very hard and Wal and Dion both agreed that their love of music should be shared across the world, so felt it was time to combine their talents.

“We created the Father and Son Karaoke Kings channel in April 2020, and have posted a new song every day since, for over 350 songs. You can check out our channels on either YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram.

“Despite Dion having disabilities, it has never stopped him from doing the things he wants to do in life and his ambition and passion has been an inspiration for children and adults alike. He is extremely grateful to all those he can inspire around the world.

“Sharing our musical love with the world has helped overcome the daily struggles through the past year and we are so thankful our music has helped others overcome their own struggles.

“From all of us supporting Wal and Dion, welcome to our online family. We cannot thank you enough!”

(00:08):
Well, good morning everybody.
This is a special edition of the Bobcast MOV with Rick T and Bob.
I'm your host Bob Mercer with me as always Rick Sawyer.

(00:30):
This is very cool for us because we're coming.
We have some very special guests live today from the United Kingdom.
Now before we introduce them, I'm going to tell you I ran across these two guys scrolling
through Facebook videos, stuff like that.
Two of the most amazing singers.
I mean, the first singer was like the first song I heard I was like, are you kidding me?

(00:53):
And now it's just like something you can't not listen to.
And I've sent them out to you guys before to let you listen to them to know what's happening
right now.
So I just had to have them on because I think I listened to one this morning.
Actually it was Elvis.
Where am I?
Ring around your deck.
And I thought my wife's like, is that them?

(01:15):
I'm like, well, that's well, she goes, that's amazing.
So without any further ado, I introduced to you father and son karaoke Kings while and
Dion welcome to the Bobcast and thank you for being here.
Thank you so much.
Thanks Bob.
Thanks Rick.
And thanks for inviting us.
It's a pleasure to be talking to you in Virginia.

(01:35):
Thank you very much.
Well, we're actually in West Virginia, but that's okay.
Okay.
Well, I'm English.
So yeah, West Virginia then I get it.
I get it.
I get it.
Yeah, everywhere I go, I get introduced as this is Bob from the Western part of Virginia.
Yeah, I see.
I see.
So it's a totally different thing.
Exactly.
So I'm learning.

(01:56):
I'm learning.
Well, that's politics out here in the colonies.
I see.
Oh yeah.
We're the same in the UK.
We say we're from up North.
Is that right?
So yeah, you're you're from where exactly there I saw what's the name of the place you're
from in the UK?
We're from Fleetwood in Lancashire.

(02:16):
It's a county which is up North.
Okay.
Okay.
Yeah, it was it towards it's like a different world.
It's different from down south.
The London area were totally different.
We think it's the same sort of thing.
It's not it's not political.
It's just the way it is.
It's kind of like us.
We're the southern most northern state in the northern most southern state.

(02:38):
Yeah, yeah.
We're kind of confused a little bit.
So anyway, but anyway, it's an honor to have you on and I was so glad you reached out to
me and said that you would do it.
So you know, I just have a few questions here.
I got to get started on this.
You guys, when did you start singing?
And I mean, I guess I started singing before lockdown.

(03:02):
Yeah.
Well, it's a question we get asked a lot.
I started singing at the age of 15 publicly in bars and clubs around the UK, which is
like 60 years ago.
And my son's always followed my career, if you will, since he was born.
Dion's now 32 years old.

(03:25):
And we started singing in during COVID 2020, or Dion did online for family members, etc.
Because we couldn't get out to see people and stuff, and then somebody said, well, why
don't you sing one as well?
So I did one myself.
And then we sang one together, which we'd never done before.
And it just took off from there.
And as you can see, we've got three 214,000 followers in a minute.

(03:51):
We're doing really well.
Yeah, we are.
Yeah, you are doing very well.
I mean, you guys, like I said, I sit and listen to you both.
And it's just amazing how your voices interact with each other.
Yeah, yeah.
And also the uniqueness by yourself.
I mean, Dion, some of the songs he sings, you said, like a teenager in love.

(04:13):
Yeah.
I'm sitting here thinking, how did they do that?
You know, because they're amazing.
Their voices are like unbelievable.
So I started thinking, well, I've got to have these guys on.
I mean, do you just pick a song and practice it, or you just do it?

(04:35):
No, we generally do it.
Yeah, we just do it.
We do it.
Luckily, I mean, when I started singing at 15, I was brought up on the American rock
and roll, vintage rock and roll music.
My father and my mom were very into that sort of music.
So I was brought up on that.
And the band that I sang in started in 72.

(04:56):
They played rock and roll all around the country.
So I know every song off by heart, if you will.
And my sons always followed us and followed old tapes that we had and things like that.
So Dion knows them all as well.
So it's very natural for us to sing what we call golden oldies rather than the newer stuff.

(05:17):
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's my favorite genre anyway.
Yeah.
You sent me a thing yesterday about your CDs, which I'm going to grab some totally.
Get some CDs because I'm absolutely just amazed with you guys.
And so you guys travel around the UK.
I know you were in Australia.

(05:38):
I know you have what family there or something?
We have my wife, Debbie.
She's got a brother there in Tasmania.
It's one of the states of Australia.
So we spent three months out there.
We've only been back three weeks.
Still probably a bit jet lagged.
But we try not to, as strange as it sounds, we try not to travel around the UK.

(05:59):
Dion doesn't travel very well because of his disabilities, et cetera.
And plus you've been in your bands for years and probably have got a little bit tired of
traveling to the UK.
Yeah, that's true.
I'm really tired at 60.
And I decided that I've had enough of carting speakers around and amplifiers around.
And so we started doing it in the singing in the bedroom.
That doesn't sound right, does it?
We started singing in the bedroom as a box bedroom, so to speak, a little spare bedroom

(06:23):
in Dion's house.
And we can do what we would do in the clubs and the pubs just next door, just here.
And so it's a lot easier for us instead of traveling around the UK.
We can just broadcast live from our Facebook page.
It's just like you say, it's just so much easier doing it that way to audiences around
the world as opposed to going into a live club and doing it.
So yeah.

(06:44):
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
And that's a good idea.
Rick and I started, Rick and I've been friends for 16 years when we started the Bobcast last
year, just for the mere fact of people not knowing what was going on in our city, in
our area.
And we've had so many people on, you know, we're starting to reach out.
This is actually our very first international interview, which I'm proud of.

(07:08):
We're now international.
That's right.
It's good for us as well.
Thanks for inviting us and to be the first ones.
That's really, really good.
Thank you.
Well, you know what was funny, Rick, and I'll tell you this because Wal knows about it.
I said, you know, I really want to introduce you to America.
And he goes, well, we have what you tell me, how many thousands of, you know, 111,000.

(07:34):
Yeah, I felt stupid.
I was like, I know this.
I was like, so.
Yeah.
So I wasn't breaking, by the way, Bob.
It was just, you know, I appreciate it because it is what it is.
Yeah, of course.
Yeah, because I mean, we've reached out to you to a few.

(07:58):
I would like to give I don't know if you guys are familiar with Leave Those Kids Alone from
Yeah.
Yeah.
Amazing group of kids.
I try to get them on and the cows hills and stuff like that.
And I love the old.
I love I'm 60.
I'll be 63 in July.
And I'm getting ready to retire at the end of the year.

(08:21):
I've been a dispatcher for 911 for 18 years.
All right.
So, well done, man.
Respect.
I'm looking forward to it.
Just coming up to the come.
My wife wants to go to London.
That's that's that's on our bucket list.
All she has to do is step outside today.
And that's that's London.

(08:41):
Oh, it's crazy weather here today.
We're getting high winds, high winds and rain and cold and drizzle.
It's like it's like here.
They're not in Ligwood, isn't it?
Yeah, it's like that.
Yeah.
At the moment.
Yeah.
Now, did you guys did you guys record your albums at home or in a studio there or your
CD?
We we have a local and we got local contact to where we know about.

(09:06):
He's only down the road and he has his own studio, which is also part of other shops
as well.
So, yeah, we recorded in a place.
It's only about two or three miles from from where we live.
It's got more recording studio.
It's just a one man operation, if you will.
And we went down and did one which went.

(09:27):
Yes.
Sorry.
CD, which went down quite well.
And now we've got five, but we're planning two more this year.
So it'd be great to get back in the in the studio and do a couple more.
It's always a great experience to be in the studios as well as to be on stage as well.
But it's just so nice to.
I'm in my comfort zone in the studio.
So you love it.
Really good.

(09:47):
It like my dad does.
Yeah.
I mean, I mean, how does it make you feel knowing that hundreds of thousands of people
are coming in?
It's strange.
Listen.
Yeah.
It's very strange.
It's very strange.
I know Fleetwood, Fleetwood is a small town where we live.
Everybody knows us.
It's about 30,000 population.

(10:08):
And I've lived here all my life.
So I know everybody anyway, if you will.
It's strange when you go to other places or you go to Manchester or Liverpool or wherever
and people are stopping you in the street and saying, oh, you're so and so.
And they know you.
And it happened in Australia.
People were stopping us outside the supermarket.
So in shopping malls and things and saying, are you father and son?

(10:29):
And it's yeah.
And it's a real strange feeling because we don't see ourselves as sort of being famous.
Yeah.
And we don't want to be.
It's something that we're not bothered about.
It's just a case of we're trying to make people smile a little bit.
We know we're not the best singers in the world.
We know we're not the best entertainers in the world, but we just love doing what we

(10:50):
do.
I think.
Yeah.
People love it too.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You can keep up with the best of my guarantee.
Rick Rick did a binge watch.
How many hours?
Three hours?
Most of the night I was up all night and I just turned these guys on because I was rocking
out all night.
I know I got a text message this morning from Rick and I thought, what's he doing about

(11:14):
this time of the night?
Three o'clock in the morning or whatever.
I thought research.
That's research.
He's very, very keen.
We research everybody we have on.
We're right in the middle of the election cycle here in the States.
We've had on a lot of people running for Congress and governor and senators and local council

(11:38):
people and stuff like that.
Rick and I thought it's time to take a break from the political realm and get into it.
Like I said, you guys are the first.
We have a young lady that she's actually local here.
Her name's Evie Schaefer.
She's going to be on and she sings.
She's all over the place now.
She started out here in Parkersburg where we're from.

(12:01):
She starts singing.
She writes her own material.
We're going to have her on.
I really think you guys can keep up with the very best of them.
Your voices, I don't know how you do it.
I don't either.
The quality of your voices is such that sometimes you can't tell who's singing.

(12:25):
Yeah, that's Dion.
I thought it was law, but it's Dion singing.
That's true.
A lot of people have said the same thing.
Strangely, Dion will sing a verse and I sing a verse.
Obviously, you'll know, Rick, because you've been up on that one.
Dion will sing a verse and I'll sing a verse, et cetera, et cetera.
Sometimes we just sing together.

(12:46):
So on a chorus, the voices blend so well because we both sound the same.
And it's like me singing two parts or it's like Dion singing two parts.
A lot of people say to us, sing together instead of singing a verse each, just try and sing
the whole song.
The only difficulty with that is the phrasing.
If we don't get the phrasing absolutely perfect, he's singing little bits that I'm not singing,

(13:10):
et cetera, et cetera.
So it's not as easy as it sounds, but it does make a massive difference when we do sing
together.
Yeah.
But the thing is, you guys sound so much, especially you, Wal, when you do Elvis.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
I've always been a massive Elvis fan.
If you close your eyes and listen to you guys sing, Dion, you sound, I mean, you're sitting

(13:33):
with your eyes closed going, how do they sound like these people?
It's amazing and it's absolutely captivating.
And I'm going to use that word, it's captivating.
And I go through and I go clear back, I scroll clear back to where I'll start getting some
of the other ones that I like.
And it's just absolutely great.

(13:57):
So what are you guys planning?
What's on your agenda?
Just have fun with it and do what you do.
We'll be back in the studio at some point.
Yeah.
I think it's just having fun.
Obviously, we've been away for three months.
It's a long time to be away.
We've managed to get enough posts saved in a folder, if you will, to keep us going for
that three months.

(14:17):
But now the plan would be to get back in the studio.
We want to do a Christmas album.
That would be great.
Yeah, I think so.
We've picked a lot of the old 50s and 60s style songs rocking around the Christmas tree,
that sort of, the old stuff from Perry Combe or Andy Williams, whatever.
And we think that'd be a great one for Christmas and people can bring them out every year.

(14:41):
Or they can play them whenever it snows, which is like every day rounding.
So you know what I mean?
Every day is like Christmas when it's all the weather.
But we'd like to do that.
And we'd also like to do Golden Oldies, Volume 4, which we're working on.
Well, can you be informed on that Christmas?
Because I'll definitely get to Christmas.

(15:02):
And all of them.
That's good stuff.
But you know, I mean, you got to be proud of your son there.
You know, just a mere fact that, you know, he's coming up and you guys, like Rick said,
you guys blend so well together and you sing like nobody's business.
It's just absolutely amazing.
I'm really proud of Dion because we know about his problems.

(15:26):
We've had to live with them from the day he was born.
And he's had some quite serious problems with his disabilities, etc.
But you wouldn't think you wouldn't think that he will try anything.
It might take him five or six times longer than everybody else to do something, but he
does it.
And the more if you look back on some of the songs we've got on YouTube from 2020 or 2021,

(15:51):
you'll see the difference in him.
The difference in his confidence.
It's unbelievable.
The confidence.
Yeah.
And it's like now he doesn't mind when he can get a word in with me.
He doesn't mind chatting to people, whoever they are and wherever they are.
You know what I mean?
It's good to be part of yourselves.
And it's obviously good to be part of the father and son team.

(16:13):
And it's good that we can speak to people all across the world as well.
It's really good because our Facebook sort of become it's not just our they're not just
becoming our Facebook friends, a part of like a Facebook family.
So to speak.
Yeah, that's true.
Yeah.
So we're starting getting to know people.
We're glad to be a part of that now.
We're part of the Facebook family because what one of our listeners said, these guys

(16:34):
are very good.
Pamela Turner, she said.
So she wanted me to pass that on.
These guys are very good.
Catch on.
And people are starting to listen because I put it out there.
And I want you to keep in touch with us.

(16:55):
And if you want to, when your albums come out, we'd like to know about it.
Of course, I'm sure we'll see it.
Yeah, we have it.
We have a saying we have a saying at the end of every we do shout out for people's birthdays
and christening and weddings.
We do that every day.
And we've done it every day for the last four years.

(17:15):
And so we wish people happy birthday.
And at the end, we always say to take care of each other and love each other.
And we always say a smile will travel around the world.
And we always say a stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet.
So you're not strangers anymore.
Rick and Bob, you're not friends.
And we will definitely keep in touch.
And we would definitely love to come on your on your podcast podcast again.

(17:40):
Absolutely, absolutely.
And we will we will reach out to you and we would love that.
Can you do us a favor?
I mean, I know you kind of put you on the spot.
Can you kind of leave us with something, a song or something?
You have food.
We've prepared for it now we haven't got any backing tracks or anything.
That's my money.
That's what I will do.
I will send you on.
We'll sing a song especially for you to for your cast and we'll send it to our messenger

(18:04):
and you can play it.
Wonderful.
We'll put it on our website.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I just I was just thinking acapella karaoke just doesn't work.
No, not really.
Not really.
I mean, if we had a bit of a speaker, we could have we could have done something, but we've
got nothing set up.
So we will send you just be yourselves.

(18:25):
I've got a special request Elvis or Golden Oldies or whatever.
I like Golden Oldies.
Yeah, Golden Oldies work for us.
That's true, John.
Anyways, that's good.
Right.
Well, any Golden Oldies, we'll send you one because it must be like Almost Heaven, West
Virginia.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's our theme song.
You must get it every time.
You must get it every time.
That's all we have a picture when someone says they're from West Virginia.

(18:48):
It's like we must be Almost Heaven.
Yes, exactly right.
Well, listen, guys, it's been an honor to have you on.
Honestly, it's been a pleasure to have you here to talk to us.
And you know, we're going to keep your we're going to keep your music going around here.
I know you don't need our help, but I'm going to just because you guys are two of the most

(19:08):
amazing people.
Thank you.
I have met and you know, if there's anything else you'd like to say before we go.
So you know, I'm posting all your all your Internet contact stuff down the comments.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Yeah, we always need help.
It's not a case of we think we've got enough followers.

(19:29):
You always need more.
And it's great to put something out there to say it's not just about the music.
That's why we do the shout outs every day.
It's about the community that we're trying to create if you build.
And it's about people talking to each other, people in France, talking to people in Florida,
talking to people in Germany, and they're all friends together.

(19:50):
And I think it's a great, great thing that they're doing that.
It's almost like we built that for them to.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, just your music.
Just your music alone makes people smile.
Thank you.
And like I said, my wife sits on the couch and she'll she'll be reading a book and she'll
look at me.
She goes, is that them?
I'm like, oh, my gosh, she goes, oh, that's good.

(20:14):
So you've made quite an influence on a lot of people, gentlemen.
And thank you very much.
We appreciate you being the very first ones internationally on the Bobcast.
And I want to say we'll reach out to you sometime soon and maybe you could do a live you can
do a live song for us.
Love to.
Awesome.
The next time we next time we know Bob, we'll we'll bring our little speaker in.
We can we can set something up for you.

(20:36):
You're a good man, sir.
I appreciate you.
I appreciate everything.
Just looking looking forward to your recording so we so we can air it for you.
Yep.
That's one.
That's one.
Thank you very much.
Thanks for inviting us.
It's been an absolute pleasure.
It's been our pleasure and we thank you guys very much and enjoy the rest of your day.
And thank you.
Take care of you, too.
Thanks very much.
Bye bye, guys.

(20:57):
All right.
That's amazing.
It is.
Those those two guys, if you know, if you haven't.
Listen to them, you got to do it.
I'm putting all their contact information down below here in the comments section.
I'm also posting it on on our website, Bobcast.net slash episodes and look at the orange episode

(21:25):
and this stuff is all there.
So you know, I got to say something real quick, Rick.
Tonight from four to nine at Texas Roadhouse, Parkburg South High School class of 2024 is
having a fundraiser.
Ten percent of all.

(21:46):
Ten percent of the tabs, I guess, go to Parkburg South High School seniors, which my Aubrey
Cheyenne Powell is a part of.
So God love her.
And in case you didn't know, she's been accepted into Marshall University.
She's going to be a big scientist.
And we're proud of her.
We're proud of Riley, who's going to be a teacher and Sheridan, who graduates this year

(22:07):
communications major.
And while I'm over it.
Yeah.
And I'm ahead of you, buddy.
I know.
Just by about five minutes.
No.
So that was fun.
What?
Great.
But, you know, I mean, we kind of got a late start.
They were, you know, we they're in the United Kingdom.

(22:28):
We're in.
We're not in Virginia, you know, and that Dell and Dion, two great guys from United
Kingdom with two great voices that mesh well together.
And if you don't get a chance to go on YouTube or Facebook, look up Father and Son Karaoke.

(22:51):
And let me tell you that you guys will be simply amazed.
So anything else, Mr. Rick, or you want to say before we go there?
I think we're out of here.
This has been a special.
Bobcast episode at the Bobcast.
We had to do this because of their schedule, you know, constraints and time differences.

(23:18):
They kid, they couldn't do it on a Saturday night when we have our normal at Bobcast because
they're five hours ahead of us, that would be what, 1130?
Yeah, I'm flagging this so that if you're watching this Sunday night or Saturday night,
you'll know it is recorded now.
And please reach out to them and let them know you saw them on the Bobcast and listen

(23:43):
to their music.
And we will absolutely keep keep their music going on here.
And they're going to they're going to honor us with a song.
They're going to make a sing, especially for Rick and I.
And we're going to post it on the Bobcast and on Facebook.
And it's just been fun.
I've enjoyed I enjoyed that.
They're just too.

(24:03):
They're two great guys.
Yeah.
I mean, I just you know, down home folk.
Yeah.
Nothing up any about them.
Just wanting to have a good time and make people smile and, you know, bring the community
back together.
Yeah, that's what we do, Rick.
That that two years almost killed almost killed our country.

(24:24):
Now don't forget Saturday night is our regular Bobcast.
We have Patrick McCormick.
McCormick or yeah.
Running for district for Parkingbird City Council.
Now that's that's not the second.
That's the ninth.
Right.
Um, as we're running, we're running this episode on the second.

(24:47):
No, we're going to run it on the night.
I think what to figure it out.
Oh, because we had Patrick on for Saturday night.
Oh, I thought he was next.
Wait, wait a minute.
Wait a minute.
Wait a minute.
No, no, no.
We'll post it on our episode.
Yeah, you know, we'll post it on Facebook.

(25:09):
We'll figure that out.
We'll figure it out.
If we don't, we always wish we had.
Thank you all very much for being on the special edition of the Bobcast.
We're going to get out of here before we get ourselves in deep trouble.
Thanks Pamela for your for your comment there.
And I know it was kind of a short notice for everybody about a half hour before we went

(25:31):
on.
I posted it that we were going to and the reason we did that case they had family there
that you know would want to see them live on Facebook.
And we wanted to make sure that they could see them.
Again, we were on with the Kings of karaoke wall and beyond from the United Kingdom, our
very first international interview.

(25:52):
Yes.
Stay tuned for more because trust me, there's going to be more.
You know, Rick's Rick's from Murphy town that right there is international enough.
Oh, yeah.
