ABOUT
Technically, you could call what I do ‘work’, but ‘exploration’, would be a more accurate term. Each photoshoot feels like an adventure because everyone, whether renowned or unknown to the greater public, has a story to tell. Listening closely, taking the time to learn what motivates, inspires and galvanizes the people with whom I work, is the first crucial step in helping to amplify their stories. For me, visual storytelling starts with a collaborative mindset. It’s imperative to put the focus on the subject and create images that get to the authentic heart of what makes that person, and their story, unique.
15+ years spent on the road as a television Director and Producer, creating programming for a diverse roster of clients including Martha Stewart, PBS, ESPN, Food Network, ABC / NBC / CBS, Animal Planet and MTV, undoubtedly made me a better still photographer.
I’ve traveled to five continents and every state in the USA to tell the stories of some of the world’s greatest award-winning athletes, artists, performers, and change makers, as well as lesser known small town heroes, and the self-imposed rules I followed in television still apply in my photography work:
Be nimble…so that glitches don’t become crises.
Preparation and research are as important as the shoot itself…which allow one to be responsive.
It’s not about you…which is a reminder to create a safe, sound, environment in which those in front of the lens may unfold and reveal themselves.
